By Invitation Only (Live In Dalton GA 31 Dec 1972)
Recorded live in Dalton, Georgia on December 31, 1978. Includes liner notes by Jeffrey Kruger. TheLion--er, the Killer--in Winter? At this live show from a club in Georgia, Lewis is his usual larger than life, if inconsistent, self. On these previously unreleased performances he's clearly, er, lubricated early on, and becomes more so by the second disc. This makes for entertaining listening, of course, and the program is a nice mix of first generation rock & roll classics and older country tunes like "Mexicali Rose" that Lewis cut his musical teeth on. This is not Lewis's best live album--that honor still goes to either "Live at the Star Club" or the "Greatest Live Shows on Earth," both from the early '60s--but it's no slouch either. SKU: 1033568

Tribe
Queensryche: Geoff Tate, Chris DeGarmo, Michael Wilton, Eddie Jackson, Scott Rockenfield. On TRIBE, Queensryche's first proper album since 1999's Q2K, the band combines all of the disparate sonic elements it had explored over the course of a half-dozen groundbreaking recordsinto a consistently satisfying whole. All of the trademarks the group's longtime fans have come to expect are here: the stop-start prog-rock rhythms and high-pitched '80s-metal vocalizing ("Desert Dance," "Open"), the heady, polysyllabic Neil Peart-like lyrics ("The Great Divide"), and the crushingly heavy super-chops (the title track). This time around, however, Queensryche seems surprisingly content to stay largely within the confines of pop song structures, sometimes even employing melodies so catchy and rhythms so bouncy that they wouldn't be out of place on a Journey record. Make no mistake, though; TRIBE is no pop sell-out, but rather eminently listenable evidence of a gracefully aging group further refining its constantly evolving and steadfastly uncompromising sound. Deeper Still
Personnel includes: Beth Nielsen Chapman (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar); Bonnie Raitt, Andy Bey, Vince Gill, John Prine, John Hiatt, Emmylou Harris. Producers: Beth Nielsen Chapman, Annie Roboff, Tommy Simms, Carmen Rizzo. Engineers include: Danny Duncan, Mark Chevalier, Gary Paczosa. Beth Nielsen Chapman has rather a bit in common with Mary Chapin Carpenter. Besides having three names, she successfully blends an introspective, almost cerebral singer-songwriter sensibility with a broad-strokes contemporary country flavoring, adding touches of folk, rock, and pop to varying degrees along the way. That's the template for DEEPER STILL, an album that comes after the longest layoff to date in Chapman's recording career and finds here none the worse for the wear. Her engaging, pliable voice is the perfect instrument to relay these songs about reconciling one's soul and spirit (as on "Shake My Soul" and the opening tune "World of Hurt") with the sometimes-unpleasant realities of modern life. No matter how nitty-grittythe lyrical scenarios get though, Chapman always has some soothing sonic balm at the ready, in the form of a gorgeous chorus or an especially appealing turn of melodic phrase, making everything seem okay again in the end. Only Way To Know For Sure, The (Live) [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Henry Rollins (vocals); Jim Wilson (guitar); Marcus Blake (bass); Jason Mackenroth (drums). Recorded live at The Metro, Chicago, Illinois. Ever since his days with Black Flag, Henry Rollins has been known for delivering tremendously intense shows with the fury befitting someone who turns his performance into a grueling physicalworkout that leaves both performers and fans feeling wiped out by the end of the night. For the two-CD THE ONLY WAY TO KNOW FOR SURE, (Rollins's live recorded debut with back-up band Mother Superior), the tattooed Renaissance man chose Chicago's Metro to unleash his might. Aided by the aforementioned power trio Mother Superior (who first hooked up with Hank back on 2000's GET SOME GO AGAIN), Rollins barely stops to breathe, as in-between song breaks are practically non-existent. THE ONLY WAY is a hard-hitting tour through the Rollins Band canon dating back to 1988's LIFE TIME (the self-empowering punk rant "Do It") and HARD VOLUME ("You Didn't Need," a howling screed of betrayal). The bulk of Rollins's set list draws from the aforementioned GET SOME (including the grooving "Illumination") and 2001's NICE (a wah-wah guitar drenched "Up For It"). With this muscle-bound intellectual and his thunderous power trio pouring their all into these 28 songs, fans are sure to get their money's worth. SKU: 1073905

Survivor [SACD]
This is an Enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Destiny's Child: Beyonce, Kelly, Michelle. Producers: Beyonce Knowles, Walter Afanasieff. Engineers include: Brian Springer, James Hoover, Dan Workman. "Survivor" won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. The '70s had Helen Reddy declaring "I am Woman" and Gloria Gaynor vowing "I WillSurvive." Two-and-a-half decades down the road, female empowerment is finding its pop music voice in the self-empowerment anthems of Destiny's Child. On SURVIVOR, the pop-R&B trio uses such songs as "Independent Women Part I" (previously heard on the CHARLIE'S ANGELS soundtrack) and the title tune as vehicles for their own statements of gender independence. Seldom has the women's-lib aesthetic been applied to grooves this sultry. Despite all the social statements, DC isn't above diving into more salacious waters, like "Bootylicious," where the ladies assess their own desirability over a sample from Stevie Nicks's '80s hit "Edge of Seventeen." On "Nasty Girls," trashy women receive a verbal dressing-down, but more spiritual matters are addressed in the closing "Gospel Medley," which finds Destiny's Child offering harmonious thanks to the Lord. Artist Of The Century, The
Personnel includes: Elvis Presley (vocals, guitar); The Jordanaires, The Sweet Inspirations (vocals); Scotty Moore, James Burton (guitar); Boots Randolph (saxophone); Floyd Cramer, Shorty Long (piano); Bill Black (bass); D.J. Fontana (drums); The Memphis Horns. Producers include: Sam Phillips, Felton Jarvis, Chips Moman. Compilation producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Sermon. Engineers include: Sam Phillips, Bob Ferris, Ernie Oehlrich. Recorded between 1954 and 1976. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Whatever one thinks of the title--Elvis Presley was indeed one of the artists who had an undeniable impact on the popular music of the 20th century--this 3-CD collection offers enough proof to support the claim. It's all here: his groundbreaking rockabilly sessions that influenced the Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and hundreds of others; all the hits from the '50s ("Jailhouse Rock," where the swagger and insolence in Elvis' voice still packs a wallop), to those from the '60s ("Stuck on You") and the '70s (a burning version of Chuck Berry's "Promised Land"). Pop ballads, blues, country, soul/R&B, rockers--virtually every song here is a gem. "I'll Hold You in My Heart," Bob Dylan's "Tomorrow Is a Long Time," and the wailing Holiday-blues "Santa Claus Is Back in Town" feature Elvis bearing his heart and soul, singing magnificently with barely restrained passion, in a style descended from the finest blues and R&B singers. This package also features well-written, detailed linernotes, along with quotes from fellow icons that serve as testimonials to Elvis' impact (the quoted include Richard Nixon, James Brown, John Lennon and Janis Joplin). If you must own only one Elvis Presley album, ARTIST OF THE CENTURY is the one. SKU: 1017899

Little Deuce Coupe/All Summer Long [Remastered]
2LPs on 1 CD: LITTLE DEUCE COUPE (1963)/ALL SUMMER LONG (1964). The Beach Boys: Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Mike Love, Dennis Wilson, Al Jardine. Additional personnel includes: The Honeys (background vocals). Producer: Brian Wilson. Reissue producer: Mark Linett. Recorded at Western Studios, Hollywood, California between January 31, 1963 & September 16, 1964. Originally released on Capitol (1998/2110). Includes liner notes by David Leaf & Mark Linett. LITTLE DEUCE COUPE is arguably the first rock & roll concept album. Combining car songs from the Beach Boys' previous three albums with several new car-related numbers, it celebrates the simple joys of being a teenage automobile owner. Hit singles "Little Deuce Coupe" and "Be True To Your School" showed that Brian Wilson was becoming a remarkably sophisticated producer, songwriter, and arranger. He had mastered the art of vocal arrangements, as shown by the spectacular five-part harmonies on "Spirit of America" and "A Young Man Is Gone," their touching tribute to James Dean. This is a fun, unpretentious evocation of a California summer. On this disc, DEUCE COUPE is coupled with ALL SUMMER LONG. The sustained Number One success of the latter's "I Get Around" established the group as America's best hope against the Beatles' continued dominance of the airwaves. The already-elaborate vocal harmonies grow more lush, the melodies more far-ranging, as Brian's rich falsetto dominates the vocal mix on beauties like "Girls On The Beach" and a hymn-like cover of the doo-wop classic "Hushabye." Wilson also masterfully streamlined his Phil Spector/Wall Of Sound influence so that a large multi-track L.A. studio production still sounds as if it's being produced by a small combo. SKU: 1055877

Complete Folkways Recordings
Solo performer: Lonnie Johnson (vocals, guitar). Includes liner notes by Sam Charters. Fans who think the blues has little more to offer than screaming guitars and over-amplified harmonicas have obviously never heard Lonnie Johnson (1889-1970). A New Orleans native who spent much of his youth in Europe and St. Louis, Johnson saw the blues through a jazz player's eyes, incorporating jazz's complex chording and hip attitude into a genre otherwise noted for its raw, unadorned passion. As a result of his masterful playing and distinctive approach, no lesser (and diverse) greats than B.B. King, Robert Johnson, Charlie Christian, and T-Bone Walker readily and enthusiastically acknowledged Johnson's influence on their playing. THE COMPLETE FOLKWAYS RECORDINGS, a 1967 collection of Johnson solo performances, offers a unique opportunity to hear this master outside his usual ensemble setting. On this generous 24-track offering, Johnson works his way through numerous original blues as well as a few well-chosen jazz standards ("Prisoner of Love" and Hoagy Carmichael's "Old Rocking Chair," among several others). Although recorded late in Johnson's life, the blues great's playing and singing show no signs of deterioration. On thecontrary, this is the work of a man at the top of his game. A classic. Best Of Django Reinhardt, The
Personnel: Django Reinhardt (guitar); Jim Hays (alto saxophone, clarinet); Joe Moser, Max Blanc, Robert Merchez, Robert Mavounzy (alto saxophone); Andre Louis, Charles Hary, Bernie Cavaliere, Bill Zickefoose (tenor saxophone); Ken Lowther (baritone saxophone); Alex Renard, Alex Caturegli, Maurice Moufflard, Herb Bass, Jerry Stephan, Lonnie Wilfong (trumpet); Rex Stewart (cornet); Maurice Gladieu, Pierre Remy, Bill Decke, Don Gardner, Shelton Heath, John Kirkpatrick (trombone); Barney Bigard, Alix Combelle, Hubert Rostaign (clarinet); Larry Mann (piano); Stephane Grappelli (violin); Joseph Reinhardt, Louis Gaste, Eugene Vees, Pierre Ferret, Jack Llewelin, Allan Hodgkiss, Challin Ferret (guitar); Emmanuel Sodieux, Louis Vola, Lucien Simoens, Eugene D'Hellemmes, Billy Taylor, Tony Rovira, Jean Storne, Bob Decker, Coleridge Goode, Fred Ermelin (bass); Pierre Fouad, Gaston Leonard, Bill Bethel (drums). Recorded between May 4, 1936 and March 10, 1948. Includes liner notes by Dan Morgenstern. This collection serves as a good introduction to the famous Gypsy guitarist, including as it does examples of the original Hot Club of France quintet with Stephane Grappelli, solo pieces, duets, trios, groups including reed or brass players, and two encounters between Django and ensembles of American musicians. The emphasis tends to be on Django's early Hot Club work, represented by five tunes on this CD, but several others here retain a Hot Club era feeling, particularly the duet with Quintet bassist Louis Vola and the Grappelli-less trio of "I'll See You In My Dreams." The debate continues to rage over whether the postwar reunion of Reinhardt with Grappelli ever came close to their triumphs of the '30s; the last five cuts will allow you to judge for yourself. And if you're looking for the roots of the "New Acoustic Music" as perpetrated by David Grisman, Mark O'Connor et al, check out "Minor Swing."Like so many tunes that became jazz standards, it was played at a much more relaxed tempo in its original 1937 incarnation than it is usually performed today. Rock Steady [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files including a music video for "Hey Baby," a short documentary and a screensaver. No Doubt: Gwen Stefani (vocals, programming); Tom Dumont (guitar, keyboards, programming); Tony Kanal (saxophone, keyboards, bass, programming); Adrian Young (drums). Additional personnel includes: Lady Saw, Bounty Killer (vocals); Django Stewart, Andy Potts (saxophone); Gabrial McNair (trombone, Clavinet, keyboards); Prince (keyboards, background vocals); Ric Ocasek (keyboards); Robbie Shakespeare (bass); Sly Dunbar, Phillip Steir, Sean Spuehler, Eric White, Ned Douglas (programming). Producers include: William Orbit, Steely & Clevie, Ric Ocasek, Nellee Hooper, Sly & Robbie. Engineers include: Clif Norell, Dan Chase, Greg Collins. "Hey Baby" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. ROCK STEADY was nominated for the 2003Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. "Hella Good" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. No Doubt continues its platinum success with ROCK STEADY, led by the undeniably adorable Gwen Stefani. Besides being a wonderfully charismatic front woman, Gwen's cute quotient is so high you can't help but like this band. While the group's last release, RETURN OF SATURN was more introspective and had a slightly more pop-oriented approach, STEADY returns the group to their roots sound of reggae and ska, while still mixing in a pop/rock feel. "Hey Baby", the first single, has an irresistible sing-along charm (including a rap by Bounty Killer) that makes it a natural for radio play. "Hella Good", possibly the album's standout track, is a funky, danceable tune reminiscent of peak-era Blondie. Gwen's sweet vocals shine through on the pretty "Running," and "Underneath It All" is a fantastic slow-tempo number that builds with a tight horn section. An all-star cast of producers helped to make this the fun, polished album it is. Co-producer Ric Ocasek boosts "Don't Let Me Down" with a Cars-like synth hook, and injects "Platinum Blonde Life" with a crunchy guitar riff that also sparks memories of his former band. Other star producers include Prince, Sly & Robbie, and William Orbit. ROCK STEADY's musical mix has a wide appeal, custom-made for bringing in many new fans to the No Doubt fold. SKU: 1069087

Dots And Loops
Stereolab includes: Laetitia Sadier (vocals); Tim Gane (guitar); Mary Hansen, Richard Harrison, Morgane Lhote, Andrew Ramsay. Additional personnel: Rebecca McFaul, Shelley Weiss, Poppy Branders, Maureen Loughnane (strings); Paul Mertens, Dave Max Crawford, Jeb Bishop, Ross Reed (brass); Sean O'Hagan (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Farfisa organ);Xavier "Fischfinger" Fischer (piano); John McEntire (synthesizer, percussion, vibraphone, marimba); Douglas McCombs (acoustic bass); Andi Toma (electronic percussion, sound effects); Jan St. Werner (sound effects, insect horns). Producers: John McEntire, Andi Toma, Stereolab. Recorded at Idful Music Corp., Chicago, Illinois and Academy of St. Martin In The Street, Dusseldorf, Germany. Is the sound of Stereolab's Moogs, electric keyboards, and strummed guitars starting to infiltrate mainstream pop? Or is the band itself getting continually better at its electronic bubblegum grooves? Whatever the reason, each Stereolab album is that much catchier than the one before. The music arrives sounding like it's been in your head for years. And some of it may well have been: the occasional trumpet blasts might as well have come from an old Beach Boys album. While the Beach Boys made their mark by topping their lush pop with words of sadness and disillusionment, Stereolab graces a warm analog pulse with soft-but-icy female vocals (in French and English) that comment on stagnation, aimlessness and the pointlessness of capitalist life. "Brakhage" finds that voice repeating "We need so damn/Many things/To keep our stupid/Lives going" over what may be the happiest pop groove in history. On "The Flower Called Nowhere" Stereolab sings of "the stagnant mass" in between chipper interjections of la la las over a 6/8 pulse, while the 17-minute "Refractions in the Plastic Pulse" sounds like PET SOUNDS as remixed by Tortoise.
