A Go Go
Personnel: John Scofield (electric & acoustic guitars, whistle); John Medeski (organ, Wurlitzer, clavinet, piano); Chris Wood (acoustic & electric basses); Billy Martin (drums, tambourine). Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York. On A GO GO, Scofield teams with Generation X funksters Medeski, Martin and Wood for an album of greasy grooves and hip downtown sonorities. The leader's guitar and John Medeski's keyboards weave and sway in a laid back slink over the lazy, ringing back beats of Billy Martin. And just when you think the groove has bent and twisted to the verge of falling to pieces, bassist Chris Wood is the glue that holds it all together. All ten tracks are Scofield originalsbut it was surely a group effort to develop such a deep pocket of funk. From the hip-hop of the opening title cut we get a sense that this is not your average jazz quartet. The James Brown-ish "Chank" captures an all new Scofield sound that's even more harsh and gritty than normal, as he scratches and twangs out a slinky intro to kick off the groove. Solos are kept at a conservative length throughout but that's not to say they're less intense. Check out Sco's tasty improv in the easy-groovin' "Southern Pacific" for a demonstration. His young cohorts provide some fiery moments as well, with Medeski and Martin both cranking out exciting solos on the bouncy "Hottentot." SKU: 1006481

Belly
Producers include: R. Kelly, Irv Gotti, Sean "Puffy" Combs, Dame Grease, Knobody. Engineers include: Stephen George, Pat Viala, Ed Raso. Given that Belly a) is the debut feature film of Hype Williams (the only bona fide auteur to emerge from the music video side of the rap industry), b) was underwritten by Def Jam and c) casts three rappers (Method Man, Nas & DMX) in the lead roles--it shouldn't take rocket science to determine that someone had a lot of chips stacked on the soundtrack. It shows: the track listing reads like a who's who of East Coast rap. Although the disc does shine a light on unknowns like Hot Totti, Lady and Ja Rule, most of the gems here are from established stars. Gang Starr's "Militia" remix (featuring Rakim)& D'Angelo's "Devil's Pie," are both enhanced by the tighter-than-tight production skills of DJ Premier and there are also nice tracks backing Raekwon and young gun Noreaga. But the standout cut is the reggae beat "Top Shotter," ridden by DMX alongside Mr. Vegas and Sean Paul. Not only does it feature the two hottest dancehall vocalists of 1998, but even critics of DMX will find that his gravelly "Here comes the boom" flows perfectly over the raw kick of a dancehall riddim. Encore
Compilation producer: Andrew Lloyd Webber. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24 bit technology. Let the critics tussle about the relative merits of Andrew Lloyd Webber versus Great American Songbook types like the Gershwins and Richard Rodgers; when they all get the gossamer-wings vocal treatment that can only come from Sarah Brightman, they're equallytouched by grace. The origin of most of the songs on this collection is Broadway, and the lion's share of the recordings hail from Brightman's THE SONGS THAT GOT AWAY album, tapping lesser-known show tunes. But whether or not you're familiar with the songs, the way Brightman's otherworldly, angelic voice inhabits them will send shivers up your spine. And when she turns operatic, as on the Puccini composition "Chi Il Bel Sogno Di Doretta," the reason why this silver-toned singer was placed upon this planet becomes immediately apparent. Principally recorded at: The Hit Factory, New York, New York. "Butterfly" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. "Honey" was nominated for 1998 Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song. A mature and contemplative Mariah Carey emerges as if from a chrysalis on her seventh album, displaying her now-familiar otherworldly vocal abilities tempered by a new restraint, as well as an infallible ear for irresistible rhythm-based, hook-laden music. BUTTERFLY's uptempo songs, including "Honey" and "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)," are flawlessly produced and catchy, and the title track soars with thespirit of independence and freedom. BUTTERFLY is full of such hopeful, uplifting moments, but it is equally infused with a deep sense of sadness and loss, as displalyed on the album's numerous ballads, most notably "Breakdown," a simple, honest song with a "Tears Of A Clown" motif, on which Carey sings of hiding her sadness from the world. Both joy and grief are explored on this album with equal tenacity. SKU: 1000585

Soul Deep (The Best Of The Box Tops)
The Box Tops: Alex Chilton (vocals, guitar, bass); Gary Talley (guitar, banjo, sitar, bass); Rick Allen (harmonica, trumpet, bass); Bill Cunningham (organ, bass); Tom Boggs (drums). Additional personnel: Reggie Young (guitar); Bobby Wood (piano); Bobby Emmons (organ); Tommy Cogbill (bass); Gene Chrisman (drums). Producers: Dan Penn, Tommy Cogbill, Chips Moman. Compilation producer: Bob Irwin. Includes liner notes by Mitchell Cohen. Before settling for enduring cult fame with Big Star, Alex Chilton enjoyed ephemeral pop stardom as a singer with Memphis group the Box Tops. Their first hit, "The Letter," was a tantalizingly short and perfect pop song-from its drum-tappedintro to its sound effects-drenched fadeout. In an effort to sustain momentum after this 1967 chart topper, the rest of the band was kept out of the studio while the American Sound studio mafia backed the gravel-voiced teenage Chilton under the supervision of producer Dan Penn. The group had a total of ten Top 100 hits, all included here. The finest of these, "Cry Like a Baby," is an impeccable slice of blue-eyed soul penned by Penn and Spooner Oldham. The pair was less successful with its other compositions, leaving it to Wayne Carson Thompson to conjure up "The Letter," "Neon Rainbow," and the stirring "Soul Deep." Alongside the hits, SOUL DEEP includes seven B-sides-all but one of which also appeared on the group's quartet of original albums-and an album-only cover of the Clifford Curry hit "She Shot a Hole in My Soul." Wildest Dreams
Personnel includes: Tina Turner, Barry White, Sting (vocals); Gavin Wright (orchestra leader); C-n-A (guitar, keyboards);Terry Britten (guitar, bass, background vocals); Trevor Rabin (guitar, background vocals); Tim Pierce, J.J. Belle, Dominic Miller, David Rainger (guitar); Chris "Snake" Davis, John Thirkell, Andy Hamilton, Steve Hamilton, Peter Thoms, Andy Bush (horns); Charles Olins (piano); Lol Creme, Toby Chapman, Garry Hughes, Jamie Muhoberac, Richard Cottle (keyboards); Reggie Hamilton, Andy Hess (bass); Keith Le Blanc, Graham Broad, Eric Ansten, Richie Stevens, Mike Higham (drums); Trevor Horn, Tessa Niles, Lisa Fisher, Miriam Stockley, Conner Reeves, The Durham Choir (background vocals); Mase. The Pet Shop Boys: Neil Tennant (keyboards, background vocals); Chris Lowe (keyboards). Producers: Trevor Horn, Terry Britten, Pet Shop Boys, Chris Porter, Garry Hughes, Andres Levin, Camus Mare Celli, Nellee Hooper. Engineers include: Tim Weidner, Brian Tench, Chris Porter. On her first studio album in seven years, Tina Turner flashes the same indomitable spirit, moxie and raw sexuality that have carried her through nearly four decades in the music business, which is to say, she sounds as young as ever. Turner has a penchant for taking good songs and transforming them into her own; here she tackles John Waite ("Missing You"), Massive Attack ("Unfinished Sympathy"), Sheryl Crow ("All Kinds Of People," a song from Crow's abandoned 1992 album) and the Pet Shop Boys ("Confidential"). Trevor Horn gives her a sweeping, modern production, surrounding the Acid Queen with atmospheric beats, subtle electro-funk and cascading orchestration. She emotes all over it. Throw in a duet with Barry White that sounds as if it was recorded between the sheets ("In Your Wildest Dreams"), and WILDEST DREAMS shows a frisky knack for musical risk-taking that remains intact. Scary Monsters [Remastered]
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, keyboards); Tony Visconti (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Pete Townshend, Robert Fripp, Carlos Alomar, Chuck Hammer (guitar); Roy Bittan (piano); Andy Clark (synthesizer); George Murray (bass); Dennis Davis (percussion); Lynn Maitland, Chris Porter, Michi Hirota (background vocals). Recorded at The Power Station, New York, New York. Digitally remastered by Peter Mew and Nigel Reeve (1999, Abbey Road Studios, London, England). Fresh off his Berlin trilogy (LOW, HEROES, LODGER), David Bowie released SCARY MONSTERS, an album that continued the cool, detached, electronic-flavored sound he'd been experimenting with on the aforementioned records. Robert Fripp's distinctively angular guitar style contributes greatly to the resulting Kraftwerk-flavored funk of "Fashion" and the jittery paranoia of the title track. Elsewhere, Bowie updates the saga of Major Tom with "Ashes to Ashes" and turns to Tom Verlaine for the new wave nihilism of "Kingdom Come" which also features Fripp on guitar. Robert Fripp was far from the only great guest invited to play on SCARY MONSTERS. Pete Townshend's swirling guitar on "Because You're Young" made it an underrated classic in Bowie's canon. SCARY MONSTERS proved to be David Bowie's last musical effort for a while as he spent the next three years pursuing a career in acting before returning to the studio in 1983 to record LET'S DANCE. Musical Chairs
Hootie &The Blowfish: Darius Rucker (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Dean Felber (acoustic guitar, bass, background vocals); Mark Bryan (guitar, banjo, background vocals); Jim Sonefeld (bass, drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Susan Cowsill, Gena Rankin (vocals); Peter Holsapple (guitar, mandolin, dobro, accordion, piano); David Immergluk (slide & pedal steel guitars); Boyd Tinsley, Joel Derouin, Bruce Dukov, Armen Gahabedian, Rachel Purkin (violin); Robert Becker (viola); Suzie Katayama, Larry Corbett (cello); John Nau (harmonica, piano, Wurlitzer, Hammond B-3 organ); Leroi Moore (soprano & alto saxophones); Patrick Warren (chamberlin); Gary Greene (percussion). All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. MUSICAL CHAIRS finds Hootie and the Blowfish ready to take some musical risks. On their first two albums, Hootie and company latched onto what turned out to be a wildly popular formula, testing out various styles of music by sticking just their little toes in, but always gravitating back to the comfortable soup of easy-on-the-ears perky pop. MUSICAL CHAIRS is unmistakably Hootie, with Darius Rucker's warm baritone leading the way, accompanied by rich vocal harmonies and jangly guitars, but it takes chances on songs like the undeniably bluegrassy "Desert Mountain Showdown," with Peter Holsapple guesting on dobro and Rucker strumming a mandolin with aplomb. With its abundance of guest musicians and the band's joint efforts at songwriting, this album comes across as eminently collaborative, and it is all the better for it--the richest, most honest Hootie and the Blowfish offering thus far. C'mon C'mon
Personnel includes: Sheryl Crow (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, accordion, piano, Wurlitzer piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards, Moog synthesizer, bass, maracas, tambourine, sound effects); Benmont Tench (vocals, piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Lenny Kravitz, Don Henley, Stevie Nicks, Emmylou Harris, Gwyneth Paltrow, Liz Phair (vocals); Jeff Trout (acoustic & electric guitars, bass, programming, loops); John Shanks (electric guitar. bass, sampling, loops); Wendy Melvoin (electric guitar); Joel Derouin (violin); Matt Funes (viola); Suzie Katayama (cello); Brad Jones (bass); Steve Jordan (drums, maracas, tambourine); Lenny Castro (congas, shaker, percussion). Producers include: Sheryl Crow, Jeff Trout, John Shanks. Engineers include: Trina Shomaker, Eric Tew, Dean Basskerville. "Steve McQueen" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. C'MON C'MON was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album and Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical)."Soak Up The Sun" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. "It's So Easy" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. So you think you know Sheryl Crow, eh? Well, the closest thing to what one might consider a "trademark" Crow tune on C'MON, C'MON is probably "Soak up the Sunshine," whose ironic good-timey feel and slide guitar recall TUESDAY NIGHT MUSIC CLUB. "You're An Original" is a ' 70s-style bluesy hard-rocker whose stylistic bent is further underlined by the guest vocal appearance of Lenny Kravitz. The low-key "Safe and Sound" combines Beatlesque chord progressions with contemporary R&B loops for an interesting meld of sounds. The plangent guitars of the title track are the most obvious example of Crow's debt to early-'70s rock, with passages that seem to have EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY stamped all over them. The cheesecake inner-booklet photos and incongruous presence of Gwyneth Paltrow on "It's Only Love" may suggest that Crow has been spending too much time with her press agent, but her obvious commitment to solid songcraft is the reigning element on C'MON, C'MON. J.Lo [PA]
Personnel includes: Jennifer Lopez (vocals); Ja Rule (rap vocals); Troy Oliver (various instruments, programming); Mario Winans (various instruments, background vocals); Rodney Jerkins (various instruments); Rene Toledo (electric & 12-string guitars); Frankie Romano (guitar); Ed Calle, Dana Teboe, Tony Concepcion, Angel Fernandez, Raul Agraz, Ozzie Melendez (horns); Nelson Jaime (piano); Jimmy Greco (keyboards, programming); Archie Pena, Mark Quinones, Bobby Allende (percussion); Cory Rooney, Jose Sanchez (programming); Jeannie Cruz, Lena Perez, Manny Benito, Ramiro Yehran, LaShawn "Big Shiz"Daniels, Karen Anderson, Nora Payne, Shalene Thomas (background vocals). Producers include: Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, Sean "Puffy" Combs, Ric Wake, Soulshock, Karlin. Engineers include: J.C. Ulboa, David Swope, Robert Williams. Jennifer Lopez' sophomore effort is anything but sophomoric. With J-LO the actress/singer conquers the jinx to create a catchy array of R&B, salsa, and dance music. With her hand deep in the cookie jar this time around, Lopez, along with Cory Rooney, co-writes and co-produces every track. The first single, "Love Don't Cost a Thing," burned up the urban radio stations with its smooth and catchy hooks. Steering clear of the obvious loops and samples, most tracks are original, save the Sean "Puffy" Combs produced "Walking on Sunshine," which employs the '80s tune made famous by Katrina & The Waves. Lopez runs the spectrum of lyrical subjects, covering love, in the aforementioned "Love Don't Cost a Thing," dance, with "Play," and trying to make the best out of confusing romantic situations, in "We Gotta Talk." Music For Pleasure [Remastered]
The Damned: Dave Vanian (vocals); Brian James (guitar, background vocals); Lu (guitar); Captain Sensible (bass, background vocals); Rat Scabies (drums). Additional personnel: Lol Coxhill (saxophone). Recorded at Britannia Row Studios, London, England. Includes liner notes by Kieran Tyler. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Produced, for numerous arcane reasons, by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, the second Damned album, MUSIC FOR PLEASURE, was considered a disaster at the time and led to their being dropped from Stiff and their first break-up. In retrospect, however, it's quite a respectable punk artefact, though the Damned themselves rejected it and never performed any of its songs again. More a historical document than a great CD, MUSIC FOR PLEASURE's highlights include "Politics," "Alone," "Your Eyes," and "Creep (You Can't Fool Me)." There's some great Lol Coxhill sax wailing on "You Know," and Beatles completists will be interested in the boys'cover of "Help." Not essential, but a good solid album for collectors of '70s punk. Down Home
Personnel: Joey Baron (drums); Arthur Blythe (alto saxophone); Bill Frisell (guitar); Ron Carter (acoustic bass). Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York. Joey Baron has made an R&B record with vast postmodern references.Baron sounds like no one but himself, with a stylized, purposely trashy drum sound, the cymbals small and splashy, the snare cracking and ringing with overtones and the floppy bass drum seemingly just hauled in out of the garage. Guitarist Bill Frisell scratches out R&B rhythms and blows linear jazz lines with the best of them on this album, while bassist Ron Carter shows his experience and facility in this contemporary setting, reminding us that we first loved him playing the revolutionary music of Miles. No saxophonist has a more original sound than Arthur Blythe, who brings his liquid fire to these simple tunes. He and Carter have a great time in their respective solos on "Wide Load," messing with the tonality of the bluesy melodies, as Blythe does on many of these tracks, setting the traditional R&B language on it's ear. It all comes together on tunes like "What," on which the singular style of the James Brown rhythm section is paid fresh tribute, the groove looping itself with interjected jazzy flourishes from the band and a polytonal Blythe melody.
