Use Your Illusion Vol.2
Guns N' Roses: Izzy Stradlin (vocals, acoustic, electric & coral guitars); Axl Rose (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards, drums, sound effects); Slash (acoustic & electric guitars, banjo); Duff McKagan (bass, percussion, background vocals); Dizzy Reed (piano, organ); Matt Sorum (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Howard Teman (piano); Johann Langlie (keyboards, drums, sound effects); Steven Adler (drums); Shannon Hoon, The Waters (background vocals). Recorded at A & M Studios, Record Plant, Studio 56 and Image Recording, Hollywood, California; Conway Studios, Los Angeles, California; Metalworks Recording Studios, Toronto, Ontario. Four years after becoming an uninvited guest at the party that is the music industry with its seminal debut, APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION, Guns N' Roses detonated a creative blast by releasing USE YOUR ILLUSION I & II. Thanks to a reckless approach toward life and music, G'N'R was constantly at the center of controversy and the result was that much of it was chronicled on this two-volume project. By this time, original drummer Steven Adler had been dismissed dueto alleged drug dependency problems and was replaced by the Cult's Matt Sorum. Keyboardist Dizzy Reed was also added as a member. ILLUSION II lacks the hits of the first volume and also doesn't overflow with as much bile, aside from a couple of exceptions. Axl Rose howls at the editors of Spin, Kerrang, and Hit Parader magazines on the rollicking "Get in the Ring," and addresses the inherent pitfalls of fame on Izzy Stradlin's scathing "Pretty Tied Up (The Perils of Rock N' Roll Decadence)". Elsewhere, G'N'R tackles an old Dylan nugget ("Knockin' nn Heaven's Door'), includes tracks cut for charity and soundtracks ("Civil War," "You Could Be Mine"), and an underrated masterpiece about heartbreak that manages to emote both indignation and sorrow without sounding pathetic ("Estranged"). If You Want Blood You've Got It [Remastered]
This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. AC/DC: Bon Scott (vocals);Angus Young, Malcolm Young (guitar); Cliff Williams (bass); Phil Rudd (drums). Recorded live in 1978. Originally released on Atlantic (19212). Includes liner notes by Rich Bienstock. The hard rock world got a close-up view of the power of AC/DC with the band's first live offering, IF YOU WANT BLOOD, YOU'VE GOT IT. Although the Australian rockers had three prior studio releases of undeniable crunch under their belt, it was this live document that captured the band in all its' chomping power chord glory. Distilling the blues and rock 'n' roll down to its barest structures of guitar/bass/drums leaves little room for error. Without heavy production techniques, keyboards, tape loops (or even an effect pedal, for that matter), the band takes to the stage with only bare-knuckle riffs and a floor shaking 4/4 beat. And shake the floor they did. Many of the tunes included here are became early live classics for the band. Certainly, "The Jack," a gleeful tale of sexually transmitted disease and "Whole Lotta Rosie," another heartwarming romp about a...uh...large female fan were concert staples during the band's formative years for good reason. Led by Angus Young's gargantuan guitar, these songs are trademark boogie stoppers full of adolescent lust and a hedonistic sweat that is entirely guilt free. SKU: 1084955

Blue Yusef Lateef, The [Digipak]
Personnel includes: Yusef Lateef (vocals, tenor saxophone, flute, shannie, tamboura, koto, scratcher); William Fischer (conductor); Sonny Red (alto saxophone); Blue Mitchell (trumpet); Buddy Lucas (harmonica); HughLawson (piano); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Cecil McBee (acousctic bass); Bob Cranshaw (electric bass); Roy Brooks (drums); The Sweet Inspirations (background vocals). Recorded at Atlantic Studios, New York, New York on April 23 & 24, 1968. Originally released on Atlantic (1508). Includes liner notes by Joel Dorn, John Kruth, and Yusef Lateef. Digitally remastered by Gene Paul (DB Plus Digital Services, New York, New York). Yusef Lateef came out of the bebop tradition (having played in 1949 with the great trumpeter, Dizzy Gillespie). However, by the late 1960's, Lateef had become one of the most eclectic jazz experimenters. Employing odd instruments such as the oboe and the argol (an obscure double reed instrument) into his sound, he gradually moved away from the staid traditions of bebop and its more groovy stepchild, hard bop. This said, on THE BLUE YUSEF LATEEF, we hear the tenor man alighting in a variety of musical styles. His concept with this album was to pay homage to America's great ethnic diversity. The opening track, "Juba, Juba" was inspired by a Mississippi prison song. "Moon Cup" reflects medieval plainchant and other selections such as "Othelia," "Six Miles Next Door," and "Sun Dog" are constructed around twelve-bar blues forms. Joined by such notables as Blue Mitchell on trumpet and Kenny Burrell on guitar, Lateef and crew bring to life the many unique and disparate sounds that make up America's rich musical legacy. Crimes
The Blood Brothers (Punk): Jordan Blilie (vocals, guitar, percussion); Johnny Whitney (vocals, piano, Wurlitzer piano, Farfisa, percussion); Cody Votolato (guitar, baritone guitar, E-bow, whistle, trumpet, percussion, background vocals); Morgan Hendersen (guitar, accordion, piano, synthesizer, double bass, bass guitar, background vocals); MarkGajadhar (drums, percussion). Producers: John Goodmanson; The Blood Brothers. The Blood Brothers, thankfully, cannot be categorized. Too angular and arty for conventional headbangers, and too thrash-oriented for shoegazing indie kids, the ruckus the band creates simultaneously flays the nerves and engages the brain. CRIMES, the Brothers' fourth album, develops the sound pioneered on their previous releases, particularly the dual screaming-vocal duties of Jordan Blilie and Johnny Whitney. The relentless banshee screeches of both singers are hair-raising, and this, combined with the jagged, punk- and metal-influenced arrangements, proves to be the music's most distinguishing feature. But the Blood Brothers are deeper and more complex than your average thrash outfit. Avant-garde atmospheric passages, unexpected moments of melodicism, and associative lyrics that read like a surrealist's word game add unique dimensions to CRIMES, as does the creative instrumentation (how many hardcore bands feature laptop, Farfisa, Wurlitzer, and trumpet). Whether trafficking in the moody experimentation of post-punk and New Wave ("Love Rhymes with Hideous Car Wreck") or the ferocious intensity of speed metal ("Trash Flavored Trash"), CRIMES is full of frantic, pummeling, inventive energy, and presents the Blood Brothers as one of the more distinctive rock bands on the scene. Wild Mood Swings
The Cure: Robert Smith (vocals, guitar, 6-string bass); Perry Bamonte (guitar, 6-string bass); Roger O'Donnell (keyboards); Simon Gallup (bass); Jason Cooper (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Leo Payne, Chris Tombling, Mr. Chandrashekhar (violin); Sue Dench (viola); Audrey Riley (cello); Will Gregory (saxophone); John Barclay, Steve Sidwell, Sid Gauld, Jesus Alemany, Steve Dawson (trumpet); Richard Edwards (trombone); Mark Price, Ronald Austin, Louis Pavlou (drums). Recorded at St. Catherine's Court, Avon, England and Haremere Hall, Sussex, England. Robert Smith pulled another surprise from his trick bag on WILD MOOD SWINGS, an amazingly fresh album for a band that at this point had been at it for over two decades. Here Smith's penchant for catchy melodies laid against song structures that build in intensity continues. WILD MOOD SWINGS includes some of the most cheerful tunes Smith has ever penned, including the festive "Strange Attraction," punctuated with bells and ukuleles, and the jaunty joyride of "Mint Car." "The 13th" is perhaps the most original song on the album, its melody relying on a Spanish fanfare (the first extensive use of a horn section on a Cure song since 1987's "Hey You!"). WILD MOOD SWINGS is a solid collection. SKU: 1005691

Essential Ozzy Osbourne, The
Personnel includes: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Randy Rhoads (guitar). Producers include: Ozzy Osbourne, Bob Daisley, Lee Kerslake, Randy Rhoads, Max Norman. Compilation producers: Sharon Osbourne, Michael Guarracino, Bruce Dickinson. Includes liner notes by Eddie Williamson. While the parting of ways between a charismatic lead singer and a popular band is always a dicey proposition (David Lee Roth anyone?), many observers undoubtedly thought that when a depressed, drug-addled, Ozzy Osbourne was fired from Black Sabbath in 1979, a particularly dark day was at hand. Incredibly, however, Sabbathsoldiered on, and Ozzy became a bigger superstar than even he himself could have imagined. Beginning with 1980's classic BLIZZARD OF OZZ and its equally classic single "Crazy Train," the Godfather Of Metal released a string of uniformly excellent albums the equal of anything in heavy music. Needless to say, along the way he consistently made the papers with his outrageous antics, headlined the biggest-grossing concert tour of all time, became a television star, and depending on who's telling the story, either sold his soul to Satan or became an average family man. The two-disc THE ESSENTIAL OZZY OSBOURNE is essentially as advertised: a comprehensive 29-track collection of Ozzy's best-known solo material. Whereas Black Sabbath was all about the biggest monster riffs humanly possible, hammered into the listener's brain until he or she had either a spiritual awakening or a seizure, these discs display a much greater pop sensibility. The Oz-man easily straddles both furious Iron Maiden-style Brit metal and gorgeously melancholy ballads. All of Osbourne's best solo albums are represented (with the notable exception of 1982's essential SPEAK OF THE DEVIL, an album of live Black Sabbath covers), so one might be tempted to consider this the last word on Ozzy's career. Considering his tendency to surprise, however, it might be wiser to consider this set as simply Volume One. SKU: 1080524

African Beat, The
Personnel: Art Blakey (drums, tympani, telegraph drum, gong); Solomon Ilori (vocals, penny whistle, talking drum); Yusef Lateef (tenor saxophone, flute, oboe, cow horn, thumb piano); Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass); Curtis Fuller (tympani); Chief Bey (congas, telegraph drum, double gong); Robert Crowder (congas, bata drum); Garvin Masseaux (congas, chekere, African maracas); James Ola Folami (congas); Montego Joe (bambara drum, corboro drum, log drum, double gong). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on January 24, 1962. Originally released on Blue Note (84097). Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Nat Hentoff. If there is one thing that drove Art Blakey's spirit,it was his passion for the drums. His desire for the drums to speak to the world was his lifelong mission. THE AFRICAN BEAT, like his other drum-centric ensemble recordings, is a testament to the power and beauty of the common language of the drum and, specifically, its African roots. Included here is a massive group of African percussionists led by Blakey, Chief Bey, and Montego Joe along with world musician Solomon G. Ilori, woodwind master Yusef Lateef, and bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik. The amalgam of percussion instruments is too numerous to fathom as a constant, primal groove, punctuated by otherworldly chants, soaring winds, and animal-like shrieks creates a hypnotizing atmosphere. The vast textures and cultures that the music summons into a listener's environment transports one to the distant land that Blakey knew so well. Indeed, with this recording, we can touch the passion of the man who brought such power to the modern drum in American jazz from its African origins. SKU: 1028764

Do You Know
Personnel includes: Michelle Williams (vocals); Eric Dawkins(vocals, various instruments); Anson Dawkins, Kelly Rowland, Beyonce Knowles (vocals); Tommy Sims (acoustic & electric guitar, Clavinet, acoustic bass, drums, background vocals); Mike Ripol (acoustic guitar); Raymond "Shawn" Hinton (guitar); Mike Haynes, Steve Patrick, Barry Green (horns); Andy Selby (keyboards, drums); Derrik "Swoll" Ray (bass); Curtis Zakery, Michael Weatherspoon (drums); Ken Lewis (percussion); Jesse Campbell, Felicia East (background vocals). Producers include: Tommy Sims, Dawkins & Dawkins, Beyonce Knowles, Erron Williams, Eric Pullins. Personnel: Michelle Williams (vocals, drums); Percy Bady (various instruments); Tommy Sims (guitar, Clavinet, keyboards); Al Willis, Mike Ripol (guitar); Rodney East (Hammond b-3 organ); Lil' Tony Russell (bass guitar). Producer: Tommy Sims. Like her 2002 gospel-informed album, HEART TO YOURS, Michelle Williams's 2004 follow-up, DO YOU KNOW, found the Destiny's Child member continuing to use her faith as a guide into the waters of solo artistry. Working with a wide array of producers including Tommy Sims (CeCe Winans)and Anson and Eric Dawkins (Tyrese), Williams is subtly more up-tempo than on her debut. The Brazilian-flavored "Purpose in Your Storm," the snappy urban bounce of "The Incident," and the mid-tempo strut of "My Only Love Is You" all point to an artist with a considerable amount of self-assurance. Not surprisingly, Williams is never far from the roots that extend back to her day job in Destiny's Child, thanks to the harmony-soaked ballad "I Know," (featuring cameos by group members Beyonce Knowles and Kelly Rowland) and "The Movement," a sultry number penned and produced by Beyonce's little sister Solange. As a nascent Broadway star with her turn in Aida, Williams also reveals her knack for ballads, with the breathy "15 Minutes" and the uplifting testimonial "Rescue My Heart." SKU: 6576067

Wheels Of Fire (In The Studio - Live At The Fillmore) [Remastered]
Cream: Jack Bruce (vocals, guitar, cello, recorder, harmonica, calliope, bass); Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Ginger Baker (vocals, marimba, drums, tympani, glockenspiel, tubular bells). Additional personnel: Felix Pappalardi (viola, trumpet, organ pedals, tonette, tambourine, Swiss hand bells). Engineers: Adrian Barber, Bill Halverson, Tom Dowd. Recorded at IBC Studios, London, England in July & August of 1967; Atlantic Studios, New York, New York from September 1967 to June 1968; The Fillmore West, San Francisco, California on March 7, 1968; Winterland, San Francisco, California on March 8-10, 1968. Digitally remastered by Steve Hoffman. When Cream released WHEELS OF FIRE, they had established themselves as the premier blues-rock band due to the success of their first two albums and the extraordinary chemistry between the band's members. As a result of this synergy, Cream also enjoyed a fiery live reputation. The double-album represented both sides of their musical persona. The first record was a studio job, where the band mixed in originals with covers of Howlin' Wolf ("Sitting On Top Of The World") and Albert King ("Born Under A Bad Sign"). The songs written by the band all contained unique touches. "As You Said" found Jack Bruce putting his bass down and picking up a cello, "Pressed Rat And Warthog" sounded like an English folk tale due to Ginger Baker's clipped recitation and the inclusion of baroque horns, and "White Room"overflowed with waves of Eric Clapton's wah-wah-drenched guitar. The second record was recorded over a four-day span at San Francisco's Winterland and Fillmore West. Extended versions of "Toad" and Willie Dixon's "Spoonful" demonstrate the band's intricate interplay, but most impressive is a blistering reading of Robert Johnson's "Crossroads," in which all three members seem to be soloing simultaneously in a jaw-dropping display of fury and bravado. Replicas [Remastered]
REPLICAS contains six bonus tracks, which include outtakes and UK single B- sides. Personnel: Gary Numan (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Paul Gardiner (bass); Jess Lidyard (drums). Recorded at Gooseberry Studios, London, England from December 1978-January 1979. Includes liner notes by Steve Malins. As early as 1977, English pop savant Gary Numan was crafting forward-looking new wave rock that was light years ahead of the punk being offered by his contemporaries. Bravely going against all current musical fashion, Numan blended science fictionthemes and tales of urban paranoia into concise pop songs that combined Kraftwerk-like electronics with glam-era Bowie. REPLICAS, his second album, was his first recording to fully incorporate a synthesizer into the pop/punk guitar framework that he explored on his debut, TUBEWAY ARMY. REPLICAS is the album on which Numan's reputation and retrospective acclaim is built. While it does not include "Cars" (that song was the highlight of his next album), REPLICAS is Numan's true masterpiece. In its reissued form, the album offers plentiful bonus tracks and extensive liner notes. Highlighted by the frosty pop and deliciously vintage analogue electronics of "Down in the Park" and "Are Friends Electric," REPLICAS is a nostalgic look at a rock future that never happened. It is also one of the few artifacts of the new wave era that sounds as fresh today as it did when it was first issued in the 1978. SKU: 1058237

Duets
WHEN ACTORS SING could be the title of a surreal reality-based TV show; instead it often turns out to be an all too real phenomenon. Luckily, the soundtrack for the Bruce Paltrow-directed movie comedy about the world of karaoke turns out to be a highly listenable collection of real-life musicians and actors picking up microphones and letting it all hang out vocally. Among the non-singers of the batch who deserve special mention is Paltrow's daughter Gwyneth. Playing the role of daughter to con artist Huey Lewis, her soulful delivery not only meshes well with her fictional pappy on a sweet sounding version of Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'," but also with Babyface on a duet of the Temptations' "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)." Other thespianswho come through with flying colors are former ER starlet Maria Bello and Paul Giamatti (aka Howard Stern nemesis Pig Vomit). Bello goes the techno route with the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" while taking a considerably mellower tone on the Bonnie Raitt ballad "I Can't Make You Love Me." Juxtaposing Giamatti's straightforward reading of Todd Rundgren's "Hello, It's Me," is a roof raising cover of "Try a Little Tenderness" alongside jazz singer Arnold McCuller. SKU: 1075207

Man With The Horn
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Randy Hall (vocals, celeste, Moog synthesizer, guitar); Bill Evans (soprano & tenor saxophones); Robert Irving III(piano, keyboards); Mike Stern, Barry Finnerty (guitar); Marcus Miller, Felton Crews (electric bass); Al Foster, Vincent Wilburn (drums); Sammy Figueroa (percussion). Recorded at CBS Studios, New York, New York. For Miles Davis, the six year layoff between the release of PANGAEA and THE MAN WITH THE HORN was marked by isolation, physical pain and dependency...a sense of inertia. At points on THE MAN WITH THE HORN you can hear him straining to get his chops back up, although ultimately, his musicianly instincts served him well during odd passages of rope-a-doping, and for every broken note there is a blast of vintage Miles. THE MAN WITH THE HORN introduces yet another striking band, featuring future leaders such as reedman Bill Evans, guitarist Mike Stern, bassist Marcus Miller and drum innovator Al Foster. The opening "Fat Time" combines Miles' love for the flamenco airs and melodic gravity of Spain with a contemporary hard funk style. Evans and Stern act as virtuoso foils, a la Coltrane and Hendrix, the latter's influence apparent in Barry Finnerty's boiling clouds of distortion on "Back Seat Betty" (which settles into a coy, laid back blues vehicle for Miles' muted horn), and a rivetting "Aida," in which Miles reprises the rhythmic tumult of his mid-'70s band with dramatic give and take between his horn and a fiery guitar-driven vamp, as Al Foster thunders away underneath. Miles, the avant garde experimentalist of the '70s, never revealed his affection for pop music and song forms we hear in the sentimental R&B devotionals of the title tune or the straight up funk of "Shout." But in closing, as if to reasure us, the swinging, medium-tempo walking blues "Ursula" suggests that no matter the setting or historical milieu, Miles Davis always remains...Miles Davis. SKU: 5068304

Best Of Led Zeppelin Vol.2, The (Latter Days) [ECD]
Full title: Latter Days: The Best Of Led Zeppelin Volume 2. This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals); Jimmy Page (guitar); John Paul Jones (keyboards, bass); John Bonham (drums). LATTER DAYS is the sequel to EARLY DAYS and documents a time when Led Zeppelin's kingdom began to crumble amid rumours of drug-fuelled ego trips and witchcraft. However, far from sounding embarrassing and overwrought, this compilation actually contains some of the band's most convincing moments. "Kashmir" quite simply remains a timeless masterpiece with its eastern-tinged riffs. "Houses Of The Holy" swaggers along majestically, and 1976's "Achilles Last Stand" is the ultimate showcase for drummer Jon Bonham's peerless percussiveassault. Jimmy Page's unique treatment of the guitar and his natural understanding of rock as sculptured noise is in evidence throughout, as is Robert Plant's persistent wailing over the top. Add Bonham's thunderous sledgehammer beats to the cocktail, and it becomes clear why very few acts can match Led Zeppelin's enduring appeal. LATTER DAYS provides further evidence that Led Zeppelin was one of rock's finest and most influential acts. SKU: 1029941

Very Best Of Prince, The
Personnel: Prince (vocals, various instruments); Wendy, Dez Dickerson (vocals, guitar); Bonnie Boyer (vocals, Hammond organ); Rosie Gaines (vocals, organ); Lisa Coleman (vocals, keyboards); Sheila E. (bass, background vocals); Bobby Z., Michael B. (drums, percussion); Kirk Johnson, Damon Dickson (percussion, background vocals); Mayte, Mazarati (background vocals). Engineers include: Gary Brandt, Peggy McCreary, David Leonard. Producer: Prince. Compilation producer: Gregg Geller. Digitally remastered by Keith Blake. Considerably more streamlined than previous compilations THE HITS 1 and THE HITS 2, the 17 songs that make up THE VERY BEST OF PRINCE offer a nice tour through the Purple One's chart successes for Warner Brothers from 1978 to 1993. Mixed in among chart toppers like the quirky "When Doves Cry," Hendrix-fueled mania of "Let's Go Crazy" and stripped-down funk of "Kiss" are enough brilliant moments to make you wish the guy hadfocused more on music and less on the identity shifts that characterized most of the '90s. Starting with the 1979 #1 "I Wanna Be Your Lover," Prince's pop sensibilities and inquisitive nature have found him cleverly bouncing back and forth between the twin poles of sex and spirituality. Whether it's the runaway pledge of faith found in "I Would Die 4 U," sly lasciviousness of "Gett Off" or battle-of-the-sexes throw-down with Sheena Easton on "U Got The Look," this Minneapolis native's way with a hook makes more of an impression in retrospect than his ability to shock. Other highlights include the millennial jam "1999," chilling view of the world "Sign O' The Times," gorgeous "Diamonds And Pearls" and irresistible "Alphabet Street." SKU: 1063445
