Who better than Frank Zappa to ask the question DOES HUMOR BELONG IN MUSIC? Recorded on his 1984 world tour, this disc is a wonderful documentation of one of Zappa's best (and smallest)'80s bands. Long-time Zappa guitarist/vocalists Ike Willis and Ray White, keyboardists Alan Zavod and Bobby Martin, bassist Scott Thunes and drummer Chad Wackerman form an incredibly agile ensemble under the strict baton of their leader. Zappa himself turns in many stunning guitar solos in the midst of continuous shenanigans.
Despite the album's title, the proceedings get off to a serious start with "Zoot Allures," one of Zappa's best rock instrumentals. Segueing directly into the classic "Tinsel-Town Rebellion," the humor factor is in full force as the octet masterfully executes Zappa's middle-finger tribute to the recording industry. The group grooves hard on a wonderful rearrangement of "Trouble Every Day" before cracking themselves up on "Penguin In Bondage." After racing through a very comical "Hot Plate Heaven" and other assorted novelties, the grand finale commences with the epic instrumental "Let's Move To Cleveland" followed by Zappa's rendition of the Allman Brothers' "Whippin' Post," powerfully sung by Martin and featuring a young Dweezil Zappa on guitar.

For rescue equipment, Jeru The Damaja has the art of the rhyme and the genius beat tactics of DJ Premier. Jeru has an obvious admiration for true hip-hop and the principles upon which it was created, and this follow-up to 1994's auspicious THE SUN RISES IN THE EAST goes a long way toward reinstalling positivity into hip-hop and putting the music back into the hands in which it belongs.
Without compromising his own street credibility, Jeru on WRATH OF THE MATHchastises other rappers who glorify gang life or portray playa images with their lyrics. Some of Limp Bizkit's critics were quick to dismiss the band as a passing fad, and few lead singers seem to be as hated as Fred Durst, but the undeniable facts remain: since rap-metal came into its own, Limp Bizkit have been among the genre's top players. Their much-anticipated follow-up to SIGNIFICANT OTHER treads similar ground, with a few hidden aces to spare. Lyrically, Durst continues to focus on both the frustrations that accompany success (especially in "My Way"), and his mainstay of demanding validation ("Full Nelson.")
CHOCOLATE STARFISH has some truly heavyweight production credits, including Terry Date (Pantera, Soundgarden), Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Jeff Buckley), and even the Stone Temple Pilots' Scott Weiland, who co-writes and contributes guest vocals on "Hold On." The House Of Pain groove in "Rollin' (Air Raid Vehicle)" will certainly inspire the "rockers and hip-hoppers" that it calls to arms. Ironically the tracks that seem the most out of place on CHOCOLATE STARFISH are those with guest rapping by Xzibit, DMX, Redman and Method Man. The beats arehot (thanks in part to Swizz Beatz), but conflict somewhat with those tracks featuring aggressive and dynamic live instrumentation.

By the fall of 1956, Riversidewas finally primed to unleash Thelonious Monk upon the jazz world--straight, no chaser. Two superb piano trio albums of covers had set the stage for Monk the composer to re-emerge with horns, and the pianist responded with BRILLIANT CORNERS, one of his greatest recordings, featuring three classic new tunes and two formidable studio bands.
The Sonny Rollins featured on BRILLIANT CORNERS is a far more imposing presence than the young acolyte of previous Monk sessions--just witness the title tune. With its multiple themes, quirky intervallic leaps, idiomatic rhythmic changes and tricky transitions in tempo, it is one of Monk's masterpieces--a miniature symphony. So daunting were its technical challenges, that the final ending was edited on from another take. Rollins begins his solo with swaggering composure, boldly paraphrasing Monk's vinegary intervals and trademark trills, before navigating the swift rapids of the double-time chorus with deft syncopations. Monk plies dissonance upon dissonance in his first chorus, playing rhythmic tag with Max Roach on the out chorus. Ernie Henry's slip-sliding bluesiness is followed by a brilliant rhythmic edifice from Roach, who maintains melodic coherence at a drowsy tempo, then explodes into the final chorus.
Elsewhere, "Ba-Lue Bolivar Ba-Lues-Are" is a soulful, easygoing blues, and Monk's solo is a compendium of pithy rhythmic devices, bent notes and calculated melodic abstractions, played with enormous relaxation and swing. He concludes with heckling big-band figures that form the basis for Rollins' expressive rhythmic testimonies. Monk employs the bell-like timbre of a celeste to stunning effect on "Pannonica," one of his loveliest melodies and improvisations. And in closing, "Bemsha Swing" is a hard-swinging, conversational performance, with fine contributions from trumpeter Clark Terry, bassist Paul Chambers and Roach on drums and timpani.

There's nothing on IT MATTERS TO ME as brash as her country take on the rock classic "Piece Of My Heart." Otherwise, Faith Hill's second album sounds like her first--twangy country with working-class heart, a sassy voice reminiscent of Loretta Lynn, and a sense of social relevance learned from Reba McEntire. Best of all, Hill still cuts across a range of styles, refusing to be tied down to any one of the sub-genres her influences might suggest.
"Bed Of Roses" and "You Will Be Mine" are assertive and rocking numbers about, respectively, keeping a lothario at bay and chasing a guy who's too shy to make the first move. On them, Hill's big southern voice is matched by jangling electric guitars that wouldn't be out of place on a Bruce Springsteen album. When it opens, "A Man's Home Is His Castle" could, in fact, be a piano ballad about one of Springsteen's heroic blue-collar losers, but as it swells into a studio pop arrangement, it turns out this particular loser is an abused wife who's about to buy a gun; this is the kind of reality that doesn't impose itself on mainstream country albums too often. "A Room In My Heart," on the other hand, shows an affinity for classic country-pop balladry with its beautifully slow chorus.
"Let's Go To Vegas" is a quickie wedding proposal, which--depending on who's making it--could be the kind of mistake that'll get you into a mid-life crisis before you're 25, or the kind of crazy hunch that could snap you right out of one. So far in her bright career, Faith Hill has shown the kind of clearheadedness and surefootedness that if she asked you, you'd be a fool not to take the chance.

The title says it all. In 1988, when this album was released, Public Enemy's musiccut with a wholly revolutionary edge. Rarely has fear, anger, paranoia and anxiety been so masterfully compressed onto a record's grooves. The Bomb Squad's artistry is the keynote to the hard, lean delivery, while Chuck D's supremely pointed lyrics leave no stone of the black experience unturned. It is not comfortable listening, but on tracks such as 'Don't Believe The Hype', 'Night Of The Living Baseheads' and 'Rebel Without A Pause' the listener is left in no doubt that they are facing a fantastically potent force.

CONVERSATIONS WITH MYSELF is an ambitious and appealing experiment. Featuring three separate, overdubbed piano tracks, Evans has aimed to create a trio consisting only of himself-- a single-player ensemble producing work with a dense, interactive texture. The general format includes two pianos trading the lead and accompaniment lines, with the third responding to and commenting upon the other two parts.There is a range of material represented, from jazz standards (including three Monk numbers), 50's show tunes ("Hey, There," "A Sleepin' Bee") and the love theme from "Spartacus."
Evans's own dark, moving composition, "N.Y.C.'s No Lark," is quite beautiful, with intersecting lines which glide and swell around one another, at times with rhythmic antagonism, at others with gentleness and grace. This is countered by the uptempo brightness of tracks like "Just You, Just Me" and the rollicking, percussive banter of "How About You?" Evans's playing is sharply focused throughout, the complex effect of multiple lines giving many tracks an almost classical feel, even when the chord structures and phrasing are distinctly jazz. The overall product, however, is intriguing and immanently listenable. In CONVERSATIONS WITH MYSELF Evans has achieved that rare creation: music that is at once challenging and accessible.

After making the world safe for hooky, unpretentious rock & roll with their 1976 debut, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers followed up with an album that further established their claim to the roots-rock throne while sharpening their songcraft to impeccability. The Byrdsinfluence still loomed large on Petty's sonic landscape but no one before or since ever wore it so well. The desperation and urgency of the protagonist in "I Need to Know" are mirrored by the song's surging rhythm and frantic vocal. Petty is in full McGuinn mode for "Listen to Her Heart," an ultimately warm-hearted pop gem where he supports the subject's independence from an unsuitable beau (so what if he probably had a hidden agenda?). A perfect successor to the band's immaculate first album.

This 1971 release was the first "real" Gong album (1970's MAGICK BROTHER was really Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth with friends, recorded before the band's official debut). It's a psychedelic/space-rock classic, hinting at the conceptual/musical heights reached by the forthcoming "Radio Gnome Trilogy" but characterized by harder-edged riffing and fewer ethereal moments (Steve Hillage and Tim Blake had not yet come aboard).
Allen's underground-oriented psycho-sexual, beatnik lyrics are a winning combination of wisdom and whimsy, but it's the music that makes CAMEMBERT. Allen's patented "glissando guitar" style (a spacy, flowing sound achieved with delay effects and a slide) puts the band inearly Pink Floyd territory, as do the long, atmospheric jams. There's also a distinct jazz influence in both Pip Pyle's bop-inspired drumming and Didier Malherbe's freaky sax. These elements combined with Gilli Smyth's ambient/erotic "space whisper" backing vocals and Allen's winning tunesmithery to create some of the least pretentious art-rock ever heard.

After spending the '80s going through stylistic changes, Neil Young released FREEDOM, a more straight-forward rock album that was no less lyrically complex despite its appeal to a broader piece of the mainstream. Playing with an assortment of musicians versus a set back-up band like the Stray Gators or the Shocking Pinks, this 1989 release is pure Neil Young. Like any great songwriter, Young populates these songs with memorable characters. "Crime In The City (Sixty To Zero Part 1)" is like a mini-Robert Altman movie with criminals and crooked cops rubbing shoulders with producers and artists whereas Rommel, oil riggers and televangelists populate "Someday."
Although Frank Sampedro is the only participating member of Crazy Horse, Young still manages to get a big guitar crunch on the predominantly stripped-down "Don't Cry" and a ferocious cover of "On Broadway." The subtler moments are also capitivating whether it's a duetwith Linda Ronstadt on the folkie "Hangin' On A Limb" or the slow-burn, Spanish twang of "Eldorado" that occasionally burps up a bit of heavy distortion. Young's indictment of the Reagan '80s comes on bookended versions (one live acoustic, one electric) of the anthemic "Rockin' In The Free World" that howl with righteous indignation.

It is one of the beautiful ironies of MTV's UNPLUGGED series that the artists who perform on the program often sound fuller, clearer, and more distinctive in an acoustic context than they do "plugged in." This is certainly the case for Argentinean superstar Diego Torres, whoselive set for the video network was released in 2004 on an album titled, simply, MTV UNPLUGGED. While Torres's studio albums are slick affairs that highlight his Latin-based world fusion with production flourishes, UNPLUGGED showcases his songcraft, sultry singing, and performing flair with clarity and precision.
The success of the UNPLUGGED series is often the result of stripped-down instrumentation. This is not the case with Torres, however--he is backed by keyboards, guitars, background singers, an accordion, a bandoneon, horns, and a full string section. The band teases out hints of rhumba, flamenco, and contemporary pop throughout, but wraps the whole in a cohesive sophistication perfectly suited to Torres's seductive voice. The result is a fully fleshed-out studio sound without any processed sheen, so that the romantic, lilting feel of Torres's music can shine through unhindered.

Original score composed by Burt Bacharach.
Bacharach's score for this Paul Newman/Robert Redford classic is probably his best-known film work, as it contains the instant standard "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head." "Raindrops," like the similarly infectious "On A Bicycle Built For Joy" is sung in the film by B.J. Thomas. The rest of Bacharach's score is equally impressive, slyly echoing the great scores of the John Ford westerns of the '40s in much the same way the film itself plays with the conventions of the genre.
"Not Goin' Home Anymore," in particular, has the elegiac feel so integral to westerns, while "South American Getaway" has a bossa-nova groove more in keeping with the era inwhich the film was shot. Though Bacharach is justifiably best known as a songsmith, his film scores are equally impressive, with BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDACE KID standing as one of his finest.
