Voices
Personnel includes: Mike Stern (guitar); Richard Bona (vocals, bass, kalimba); Arto Tuncboyaciyan (vocals, percussion); Elisabeth Kontomanou, Philip Hamilton (vocals); Michael Brecker, Bob Franceschini (saxophone); Jim Beard (keyboards); Jon Herington (12-string guitar); Chris Minh Doky (acoustic bass); Lincoln Goines (bass); Dennis Chambers, Vinnie Coliauta (drums). Engineers include: James Farber, Bart Migal, Jim Beard. Principally recorded at Sound On Sound Studios, New York, New York. VOICES was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album. Guitarist-composer Mike Stern presents a mixed bag of musical ideas on this on VOICES, blending the ethnically diverse singing styles of Richard Bona, Elizabeth Kontomanou, and Philip Hamilton with rock grooves, bop guitar licks, and layers of keyboards. Even though Stern dips his pen into many musical colors, VOICES comes across as a solid, unified effort. In fact, Stern convincingly pulls together seemingly disparate musical styles with ease. In particular, songs such as the lyrical "Wishing Well" and the lush ballad "What Might Have Been" are surprisingly compelling works. At times, VOICES verges onpop; other times it seems to recall South African and Caribbean music before settling into a jazz fusion groove. Clearly, Stern is on to something here as he connects the human voice to jazz in a unique, highly inventive manner. SKU: 1065332

Talk On Corners
This special edition of TALK ON CORNERS features several remixes and tracks previously not included on the album. The Corrs: Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Jim Corr (guitar, accordion, keyboards, programming); Sharon Corr (violin, background vocals); Caroline Corr (drums, bodhran, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: The Chieftans, Paddy Moloney, David Foster. Producers: David Foster, Oliver Leiber, Jim Corr, Glen Ballard, John Hughes. Recorded at The Bunker, Wrexham, Wales. The Corr family's music hit big in Europe before making it's way to America, so the U.S. label folks had a little time to prepare something special for the American release of TALK ON CORNERS. Consequently, the U.S. edition of the album contains songs not included on the original European album, as well as additional remixes of some of the tunes. The Corrs' mixture of contemporary pop with traditional Irish influences is certain to appeal to audiences in both camps. Any album that features guest appearances from both David Foster and theChieftains is bound to have some serious cross-market appeal. The Corr siblings are no instrumental slouches either, and their tasty contributions on traditional pop/rock instruments (as well as tin whistle, bodhran, etc.) are the foundation of the genre-defying construct that is TALK ON CORNERS. Sharp Dressed Men (A Tribute To ZZ Top)
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. With the lines between rock and country getting blurred all the more by the generation of Nashville artists who came to the fore in the '90s, it's no surprise that the Little Ol' Band From Texas would get their due on SHARP DRESSED MEN: A TRIBUTE TO ZZ TOP. Trotting out material from this trio's '80s MTV heyday are Tennessee natives Lonestar ("Gimme All Your Lovin'), former oil-rigger Trace Adkins ("Legs"), neo-traditionalist Brad Paisley ("Sharp Dressed Man"), and boot-scootin' duo Brooks & Dunn ("Rough Boyd"). While these cuts from the canon of the latter day ZZ Top doshine, it's the covers of '70s vintage material that come away with a fine coating of Texas grit. Hank Williams Jr. digs into "Jesus Just Left Chicago/Waitin' For The Bus Medley," son Hank Williams III tears through "Fearless Boogie," and Dwight Yoakam gets bad-ass with "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide." Other stellar cuts include Willie Nelson's interpretation of "She Loves My Automobile" by way of Bob Wills, and Phil Vassar doing both Sam & Dave and ZZ Top proud with his reading of "I Thank You." Charm Of The Highway Strip, The
The Magnetic Fields: Stephin Merritt (vocals, various instruments). Additional personnel: Sam Davol (cello). Stephin Merritt claims that the first four full albums by his band, the Magnetic Fields, each have a specific and unique musical style. As such, THE CHARM OF THE HIGHWAYS STRIP may be the first synth-country album. Marrying the Fields' usual electronic arsenal to original songs written in the traditional Hank, Faron, Lefty, and Patsy C&W fashion works better than one might initially imagine. Merritt's wounded-romantic lyrical persona is not really that dissimilar from that of, say, George Jonesor Porter Waggoner. In particular, fans of such country radicals as Lee Hazelwood, Kinky Friedman, and Terry Allen should be immediately attracted to narratives like "Born On A Train" or "Two Characters In Search Of A Country Song." Merritt fans averse to twang have nothing to fear. Despite the overt country tone of the album, CHARM is still prime Magnetic Fields. SKU: 1047658

Burnin' [Remastered]
Bob Marley& The Wailers includes: Bob Marley (vocals, guitar); Peter Tosh (vocals, guitar, piano, organ); Earl "Wya" Lindo (keyboards); Aston "Family Man" Barrett (bass); Carlton Barrett (drums); Bunny Wailer (bongos, congas, background vocals); Alvin "Seeco" Patterson (percussion). Reissue producers: Bill Levenson, Maxine Stowe. Engineers include: Sylvan Morris, Tony Platt, Phil Brown. Recorded at Harry J. Studios, Kingston, Jamaica. All tracks have been digitally remastered. CATCH A FIRE launched Jamaica's Wailers into international prominence with a brilliant cross of reggae and rock. Purists did fault its emphasis on the latter, a criticism answered with the earthier BURNIN'. Stripped of session musicians, the group's frontline harmonies were supported by the sinewy Barrett brothers rhythm section which provided a dry counterpoint. Although Bob Marley was fully in control, the support of Bunny Livingston and Peter Tosh was crucial to the overall sound. Their vocal interplay mirrored that of the Impressions, but lyrically the Wailers proclaimed a vibrant militancy instantly heard on "Get Up Stand Up." Eric Clapton helped to popularize "I Shot The Sherrif," but this album is noteworthy for its uncompromising blend of polemics and tough melodies. SKU: 1060972

Survival [Remastered]
Bob Marley & The Wailers: Bob Marley (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, percussion); Aston "Familyman" Barrett (guitar, bass, keyboards, percussion); Junior Marvin (guitar, background vocals); Al Anderson (guitar); Tyrone Downie, Earl "Wya" Lindo (keyboards, percussion, background vocals); Carlton Barrett (drums, percussion); Alvin Patterson (percussion). The I Threes: Rita Marley, Judy Mowatt, Marcia Griffiths (background vocals). Producers: Bob Marley & The Wailers, Alex Sadkin. Reissue producers: Bill Levenson, Maxine Stowe. Recorded at Tuff GongRecording Studio, Kingston, Jamaica. Originally released on Island (9542). Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (2001, Sterling Sound, New York, New York) Bob Marley And The Wailers' seventh studio album finds the masterful Jamaican singer turning his attentions away from purely domestic Caribbean matters to the African continent. His songs had previously often cited Africa as both an influence and a final spiritual destination for Rastafarians; RASTAMAN VIBRATION's "War" had even named a laundry list of aggrieved nations struggling for freedom. But with SURVIVAL's "Africa Unite," and "Zimbabwe" in particular, Marley focuses for the first time both on solutions to the struggle, and on a specific nation and its fight against oppression--all to the Wailers' characteristically irrepressible skank. "So Much Trouble in the World" is an apt scene setter for an overtly political album worldwide in its aspirations, while "Babylon System" ("is the vampire...") expertly skewers the West and its centuries-old involvement in Africa. Marley's strength as a songwriter, and the Wailers' strength as a band, is that they can perform an operation like this and still leave the victim smiling and happily tapping his feet as they stick the knife in. The album's highlight is unquestionably the inimitable "One Drop," an irresistibly danceable paean to the Rastafarian religion and the glory of the almighty beat. SKU: 1063778

Dig It
Full performer name: Red Garland Quintet With John Coltrane. Red Garland Quintet: Red Garland (piano); John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Donald Byrd (trumpet); George Joyner, PaulChambers (bass); Arthur Taylor (drums). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on December 13, 1957 and February 2, 1958. Originally released on Prestige (7229). Includes liner notes by Joe Goldberg. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Pianist Red Garland is best known for his work in the 1950s with The Miles Davis Quintet, where he provided a rootsy foil for the trumpeter. But he was already established as a leader of trios and small groups. On this 1957 album for Prestige, the young John Coltrane and Donald Byrd, bassist George Joyner and drummer Arthur Taylor join Garland for a relaxed, fine set. Charlie Parker's "Billie's Bounce" starts things off, and Coltrane impatiently burns through a few choruses, pushing bop's limits. On the uptempo, "Crazy Rhythm" (with Paul Chambers on bass), Garland's clear bop lines are both woody and ringing. "Lazy Mae" is an extended, late night, blues meditation; Garland explores melodic block chords, and Coltrane delightfully stretches the boundaries. SKU: 4120409

Garlands [Remastered]
Cocteau Twins: Elizabeth Fraser (vocals); Robin Guthrie (guitar); Will Heggie (bass). Additional personnel: Gordon Sharp (vocals). Though it's least like their later material and far more clearly grounded in rock music tropes, the debut Cocteau Twins album, GARLANDS (1982), contains most of the essentials that would eventually make them the darlingsof the ethereal and Goth crowd. The album features four main elements--Will Heggie's understated and sinister bass lines, a pulsing drum machine which often provides the only real structure for the songs, Robin Guthrie's massively treated guitars which often sound like some sort of Doppler effect, slow-motion siren, and Elizabeth Fraser's eerie vocals and lyrics. Fraser assembles what appear to be nonsense syllables (though occasionally the odd word or two in English or Gaelic is decipherable) selected for their sound rather than their meaning, and sings them in a combination otherworldly warble and yodel. All of this is infinitely prettier to listen to than this description would suggest. Highlights include the menacing, claustrophobic "But I'm Not," and the cavernous vocal and sustained guitar distortion of "Grail Overfloweth." Collectors should note that early versions of the CD contained six bonus tracks recorded for British radio. SKU: 1079773

Best Of Southside Johnny And The Astbury Dukes, The
Personnel includes: Southside Johnny Lyon, Ronnie Spector, Miami Steven Van Zandt. Although Bruce Springsteen may be the best known and mostsuccessful New Jersey working class rocker, Southside Johnny has been responsible for some fine moments as well (although admittedly, Springsteen and his guitarist Little Steven wrote many a song for Johnny). Southside Johnny and his backing band, the Asbury Jukes, are more R&B influenced than the Boss, but still know how to get a party going with sing-along rockers and tender ballads. The 19-track 1992 compilation, BEST OF SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY, is fine place to start for the newcomer, as it focuses mainly on the Jukes' stronger '70s albums. Standouts include the soulful rockers "The Fever," "Love on the Wrong Side of Town," and "Without Love." SKU: 1005117

100 Degrees And Rising
Personnel includes: Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick (vocals, guitar, handclaps, programming); Maxton Gig Beesley, Jr. (vocals, Fender Rhodes electric piano, vibraphone, drums, percussion); Joy Malcolm, Pamela Anderson, Barry Stewart (vocals); Bud Beadle (flute, alto & baritone saxophones); Adrian Ravell (flute, tenor saxophone); Ed Jones (soprano & tenor saxophones); Gerard Presencer, Kevin Robinson (trumpet, flugelhorn); Fayyaz Virji, Mark Nightingale (trombone); Graham Harvey (piano, Fender Rhodes electric piano, synthesizer, Moog bass); Peter Hinds (piano, Fender Rhodes electric piano, synthesizer). Producers: Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick, Richard Bull. Principally recorded at Trident 2 Studio, London, England. Singer Maysa Leak has left the fold, but Incognito's big, brassy British soul remains the same on 100 DEGREES AND RISING. Electric pianos lay down jazzy R&B vamps, strings sweep in with graceful accents, and horns play with and respond to the vocals, all over a variety of percolating funk beats. Put these parts together and you might call it acid jazz. It's a modern name for music that sounds like they used to make it--group-driven, roots-conscious and, above all, sophisticatedly soulful. And the superb new trio of vocalists that contributes to this, the band's fifth album, slides right in as part of the collective. As the title implies, sweat drips and tension bubbles beneath the smooth surface of 100 DEGREES AND RISING in the tradition of all great urban soul. From the foreboding stabs of strings that kick off the opener, "Where Did We Go Wrong," like something out of the old sound of Philadelphia, Incognito honors that tradition. "Roots (Back To A Way Of Life)" announces itself with a blast of brass straight out of Earth, Wind & Fire's "Shining Star." "Too Far Gone," an electric piano ballad featuring a marvelously melancholic vocal turn by Barry Stewart, has the feel of early Stevie Wonder. And Incognito can simply lay back and groove too: "Barumba" is Spanish soul, and "After The Fall," one of the album's three instrumentals, has a breezy flugelhorn feel, like Chuck Mangione overhauled and reimagined by the Brand New Heavies. Live
Personnel: James Taylor (vocals, guitar); Michael Landau (guitar); Don Grolnick (piano); Clifford Carter (keyboards); Jimmy Johnson (bass); Carlos Vega (drums); Valerie Carter, David Lasley, Kate Markowitz, Arnold McCuller (background vocals). Engineers: Nathaniel Kunkel, John Godenzi, Randy Hutson. Recorded live in the fall of 1992. Although he is a seasoned and well-loved live performer, James Taylor had never made a live record before 1993, when he released this two-CD set. Culled from a series of 14 concerts, these 30 songs capture the genial Taylor digging into an impressively rich bag of songs, with crowd-pleasing results. It's an extremely faithful recording--no overdubs--and the band is top-notch, with a standout backup vocal section. Taylor proves he doesn't mind serving up old chestnuts even after performing them for decades, and delivers the goods with such staples as "You've Got a Friend" and "Fire and Rain." The first CD concentrates a bit more on classic-era James Taylor--CD 2 leans a bit toward his later career--but most of these songs will be familiar to anyone who was around when Taylor was a fixture on American radio. Beginning with a luminescent "Sweet Baby James," he remains faithful to the spirit of hits like "Shower the People" "Your Smiling Face", and "HowSweet it Is," although he sometimes plays around with his vocal delivery, as on the driving "Steamroller Blues." All in all, this is a satisfying retrospective of a distinguished body of work. SKU: 1006504

MTV2 - Headbanger's Ball Vol.1 (2CD Set)
In ye olde days of the 1980s, true metalheads hoping to catch videos of their favorite bands had to stay up late for the original HEADBANGERS BALL, MTV's bastion of all things long-haired, leather-clad, and too heavy for the network's regular rotation. In the new millennium, when extreme metal of every sort reached the mainstream on a weekly basis, the faithful ironically still turned to HEADBANGERS BALL, this time on MTV's music-intensive--and, oddly enough, less popular--sister network MTV2. As the title suggests, MTV2 HEADBANGERS BALL collects the program's best moments, which range from the chart topping alt-rock metalof Staind (here represented by "Price to Play," the first single from 12 SHADES OF GREY) to lesser known, far more demanding fare such as Unearth's pile-driving "Endless." The two-disc set even gives a nod to a few of metal's most influential pioneers, Anthrax and Slayer (the latter contributes an absolutely ferocious live version of the classic speed metal anthem "Raining Blood"), acknowledging both the roots of the genre and the artists that made the original HEADBANGERS BALL so compelling. Greatest Hits
Personnel includes: Mariah Carey (vocals); Trey Lorenz, Jermaine Dupri, Joe, Luther Vandross, 98 Degrees, Boyz II Men, Whitney Houston, Jay-Z, Lil' Bow Wow. Producers include: Dave Hall, Walter Afanasieff, Mariah Carey, P. Diddy, Jimmy Jam. Despite various tabloid-worthy tribulations and a rather flat cinematic debut in the musical bio-flick GLITTER, Britney and her fellow singing Mousketeers would do well to take notes on the galactic-sized success of '90s diva Mariah Carey. The two-disc GREATEST HITS bears witness to Carey's mind-boggling chart dominance and her remarkable five-octave range. Encompassing all the chart-toppers of 1998's #1'S compilation including "I Don't Wanna Cry," "Hero," and "One Sweet Day," this anthology traces the Long Islander's path from heartfelt balladeer ("Vision Of Love," "Love Takes Time") to hip-hop flavored dance-pop queen ("Fantasy," "Make It Happen"). Among Mariah's most impressive traits is her ability to seamlessly match up with a wide range of duet partners. When she's not digging into a Jackson 5 hit with Trey Lorenz ("I'll Be There") or playing Diana Ross to Lionel Richie's Luther Vandross (the '80s smash "Endless Love"), Carey is throwing down with Jay-Z ("Heartbreaker") and going toe-to-toe with fellow diva Whitney Houston ("When You Believe"). Other notable collaborations include a harmony-soaked meeting with Boyz II Men ("One Sweet Day"), a sweet-flowing Jermaine Dupri outing ("Sweetheart") and a Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis-produced summit with Joe and 98Degrees ("Thank God I Found You"). 200 Km/h In The Wrong Lane (+DVD)
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Producers include: Trevor Horn, Martin Kierszenbaum, Robert Orton. There's been a lot of hubbub about the marketing tactics of this album by a teenage lesbian female duo, who are pictured in the booklet as frolicking schoolgirls locking all available limbs around each other in their underwear. Still, that doesn't mean that said duo's debut album 200 KM/H IN THE WRONG LANE is lacking in pop hooks or spot-on production. With ace producers like the estimable Trevor Horn on hand, one would scarcely expect otherwise. With most of the album split between straight-ahead dance-pop and a kind of post-Alanis aggro rock tempered by the pair'swispy, Bjork-like voices. It's something of a surprise to be confronted mid-album with a quite faithful cover of the Smiths' beloved paean to misery "How Soon is Now," and no less of a surprise to find how seamlessly it's brought across. Adding an exotic, one-big-world touch to the whole affair, the ladies in question (Lena Katina and Juia Volkova) hail from Russia, where their teen lipstick-lesbian image first brought them fame.
