E Luxo So
On their fifth album, Labradford--a band already known for its sparse, dreamy soundscapes--tones things down even further. In approaching a more minimalist aesthetic, Virginia's favorite post-rockers drop the film-noir Ennio Morricone vibe that garnered unnecessary comparisonsto Tortoise. Instead, there's a hushed, subtly electronic (it sometimes sounds like Pole's Stefan Betke is sitting in) feel to these six lengthy, untitled tracks that makes its predecessor, MI MEDIA NARANJA, sound like NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS. The increased use of space serves the band well, drawing the listener's attention to the sonic minutiae so vital to the band's compositions. Rather than a reduction, this process can be seen as a successful redefinition, especially on the third track, where the gentle pairing of piano with string section evokes a classical feel. Song Remains The Same, The (Live/Original Soundtrack)
Full title: The Song Remains The Same: The Soundtrack From The Motion Picture. Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals); Jimmy Page (guitar); John Paul Jones (bass, piano); John Bonham (drums). Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Cameron Crowe. Back in the seventies, it seemed that every rock band needed to have a live concert film to commemorate their triumphant treks across America. Led Zeppelin were no exception and THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME is a chronicle of Led Zeppelin on tour. Although the uninspired visual aspects of the film fail to capture the power of Led Zeppelin at their mid-seventies peak, the album manages to convey their live prowess. The twenty-six minute, hypnotic version of "Dazed and Confused" works much better here than in the film, where movie patrons would head to the concession stand ten minutes into the song. "Whole Lotta Love" gets a similar extended treatment and the results are equally impressive. THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME also lets you hear that songs like "Stairway To Heaven" sound wonderful even without the benefit of studio overdubs. Though not perfect, this is an honest documentation of the Led Zeppelin live experience, serving as a reminder that beneath the larger-than-life myths that surrounded the group, Led Zeppelin were simply a powerful blues-influencedrock band who lived for their music. Blowin' The Blues Away [Remastered]
The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of BLOWIN' THE BLUES AWAY includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal. Personnel: Horace Silver (piano); Junior Cook (tenor saxophone); Blue Mitchell (trumpet); Eugene Taylor (bass); Louis Hayes (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on August 29 & 30 and September 13, 1959. Originally released on Blue Note (84017). Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler and Michael Cuscuna. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Rudy Van Gelder (Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey). This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series. Besides the wildly popular SONG FOR MY FATHER, the second most acclaimed Horace Silver disc is the endlessly enjoyable BLOWIN' THE BLUES AWAY. This 1959 Blue Note date features the pianist in full stride with a quintet that includes trumpeter Blue Mitchell and saxophonist Junior Cook, two fellow proponents of funky hard bop. The gospel and R&B influence in Silver's approach is evident as finger-snapping grooves support bouncing melodies that bubble and pop with every chorus. As the title suggests, this music is a celebratory fanfare that washes away the hardships of everyday life. The explosive title track opens the session with a bang as the group burns through the changes with tight precision and plenty of spirit. The jazzier "The St. Vitus Dance" is a swinging triocut with hints of an Ellington influence among the bopping lines of Silver's solo. The most well known tunes here are the lush ballad "Peace," featuring outstanding work by Mitchell, and the classic "Sister Sadie," one of the most recorded Silver compositions in the jazz repertoire. Other highlights of this exemplary session are the bebop-flavored "Break City" and the aptly titled ballad "Melancholy Mood." SKU: 5072251

Complete Plantation Recordings, The
Full title: The Complete Plantation Recordings: The Historic 1941-1942 Library Of Congress Field Recordings. THE COMPLETE PLANTATION RECORDINGS contains previously unreleased material, including 13 original songs, 5 alternate versions, and 4 interviews with Muddy Waters. This compilation also includes an interview with original co-producer Alan Lomax, and several rare, very early photos from The McKinley Morganfield (Muddy Waters) Estate who licenced this collection. Personnel includes: Muddy Waters (guitar, vocals); Percy Thomas (guitar); Henry "Son" Simms (violin); Louis Ford (mandolin). Reissue producer: Andy McKaie. Recorded on Stovall's Plantation in Clarksdale, Mississippi between 1941 and 1942. Includes liner notes by Mary Katherine Aldin. Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios). The COMPLETE PLANTATION RECORDINGS offers a fascinating glimpse at one of the great figures in blues history-long before he could possibly have imagined his future fame. Folklorist Alan Lomax made these field recordings of Waters in 1941, when the budding artist was still a sharecropper in Mississippi. Unlike the later electrified recordings Waters made in Chicago, these sides primarily feature Waters soloing on acoustic guitar (although mandolin and fiddle accompany him, in the hokum style of Cannon's Jug Stompers, on five tracks). This disc would be invaluable if only for its historic significance, but the recordings here stand on their own as classics of the country blues style. Interspersed among the 18 songs are four equally fascinating interview segments, during which Waters repeatedly reveals his artistic debt to Delta blues legendSon House. Selections include early versions of "I Can't Be Satisfied" (here called "I Be's Troubled") and "Walkin' Blues" (here entitled "Country Blues"), as well as several religious numbers that demonstrate the influence of Blind Willie Johnson on Waters' early music. Luck Of The Draw
Personnel: Bonnie Raitt (vocals, slide guitar, acoustic & electric guitars, electric piano); Stephen Bruton (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Mark Goldenberg (acoustic guitar); Randy Jacobs, Robben Ford (electric guitar); Scott Thurston (acoustic & electric guitars, keyboards); Billy Vera (electric guitar); Ivan Neville, Ian McLagan (Hammond B-3 organ); Benmont Tench (Hammond C-3, piano); Steve Conn (accordion); James "Hutch" Hutchinson (bass); Don Was (jug bass); Ricky Fataar, Curt Bisquera, Tony Braunagel, Jeff Porcaro (drums); Debra Dobkin, Paulinho DaCosta (percussion); Sweet Pea Atkinson, Sir Harry Bowens, David Lasley, Arnold McCuller, Kris Kristofferson, Paul Brady, Danny Timms, Glen Clark (background vocals). Recorded at Ocean Way Recording and Capitol Studios, Los Angeles. An extremely strong follow-up to the superb NICK OF TIME, LUCK OF THE DRAWcontinues where that Grammy winner left off--and in a way, surpasses it. Co-produced by Raitt and Don Was, LUCK OF THE DRAW again plays on the singer's rich blues roots and potent slide guitar, with a fair share of the softer, lovelorn ballads that distinguished NICK OF TIME. A gutsy woman who revels in her sexuality, Raitt shapes "Something to Talk About" and the reggae-tinged "Come To Me" into brilliant come-ons, then counters the seduction hauntingly with songs like the heartbreaking "I Can't Make You Love Me," featuring Bruce Hornsby on piano. The complicated emotional reverie of "One Part Be My Lover" emerged from a poem that Raitt's husband Michael O'Keefe left on her pillow after the couple had argued one night. "Not the Only One" is a beautiful, buoyant love song with Raitt's sand-and-smoke vocals riding Paul Brady's lyrics with reverent, hopeful abandon. Further establishing the fiery redhead as the grand blues mama (not to mention one of the most formidable slide guitarists) of the contemporary rock scene, LUCK OF THE DRAW is Raitt at her raunchy and romantic best. Papa

Kameni-Kanga, Natalie Jackson, Bemshi Shearer Jones, Johnny Kemp Jr., M, Djene Doumbouya, Djenka Diabate, Isabel Gonzalez (background vocals); Grace Jones, Vernon Reid. Engineers include: Scott Harding, Philippe Brun, Timour Cardenas. Recorded at WANDA Studios, Bamako, Mali in June 1997; TMF Studios, New York, New York in December 1997; LATITUDE 101, Paris, France in September 1998. PAPA was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. Salif Keita is known in world music circles as "the voice of Mali," as he's a star in that African country and its most well-known musical export. Mali is a cultural melting pot, where North African folk sounds meld with Arabic, French, Spanish/Cuban, and Anglo-American folk and pop sounds. Keita takes these influences and molds them into his own emotion-laden style, his smooth voice attaining gospel-tinged levels of passion. PAPA, co-produced by ex-Living Color guitarist Vernon Reid, is his most accessible album, yet compellingly maintains the African elements at the music's core. Reid (along with special guest Grace Jones) provides a full-sounding, vibrant, pop-flavored context in which Keita can shine. "Ananamin (It's Been So Long)" is an evocative, sultry, R&B-tinged love ballad (think Sade) that shimmers like a swimming pool on a hot summer day. The loping, pensive "Sada" continues the groove, but with the haunting refrain of a country-tinged guitar motif. "Abede" is lush with the dancing, sparkling guitars of Central and West African pop (think King Sunny Ade), bubbling percussion, and rich choral singing, with Keita's mighty voice testifying over it all. Themusic here is a virtually perfect fusion of different styles of traditional African and cosmopolitan pop music. SKU: 4123547
