On Returning (Wire 1977-1979)
Wire: Colin Newman, B.C. Gilbert (vocals, guitars); Graham Lewis (vocals, bass); Robert Gotobed (drums). ON RETURNING gathers most of the jewels from the richest period in the career of Wire, one of the most influential bands to emerge from the punk era. Groups as diverse as R.E.M and the Minutemen have cited Wire as a key influence. Wire's 1977 debut was densely packed with skewed, raw songs full of vitriol and quintessentially English insolence, while the two subsequent releases showcased the group's art-school leanings as the sound grew darker and more dissonant. This generous 31-song collection effectively charts the group's rapid evolution. It begins with a slew of songs from the debut, PINK FLAG, including "Three Girl Rhumba," a song that '90s Brit-popsters Elastica quoted so liberally that they were forced to pay royalties. The early songs have a messy charm built upon dirty guitar chords and the distinctly cheeky vocalsof Colin Newman. Later works, incorporating synthesizers and keyboards played by producer Mike Thorne, are far more caustic, but the group never fully drops the pop, especially on the furiously catchy "Dot Dash" and "I Am the Fly," one of their signature songs. "Strange" may be familiar to listeners from R.E.M.'s cover version. SKU: 1028744

Just Enough Education To Perform
Stereophonics: Kelly Jones (vocals, guitar); Richard Jones (harmonica, bass); Stuart Cable (drums). Additional personnel includes: Marshall Bird (harmonica, piano, Wurlitzer piano, background vocals); Glenn Hyde (harmonica); Hazel Fernandes, Aileen McLaughlin, Anna Ross (background vocals). Principally recorded at Real World Studios, Bath, England. On JUST ENOUGH EDUCATION TO PERFORM, Brit-poppers Stereophonics offer another refreshingly unpretentious album in which frontman Kelly Jones sings about everyday topics and emotions in his inimitable winsome voice, the whole thing set to outrageously catchy melodies and driven by a strong guitar-based sound. Think a slightly grungier version of the La's and you're not far off the mark, although the album's far too stylistically varied to really be pigeonholed. "Have a Nice Day" could be Cheap Trick without the irony. Jonessays the magnificent "Mr. Writer" was inspired by ELO and Stevie Wonder, although it could also pass for early-'70s John Lennon remade a la the Rutles. The exquisitely countryish "Step on My Old Size Nines" comes off as a modern alternative-rock take on early Brinsley Schwarz. Gorgeous stuff, and often rather uplifting. SKU: 1068221

Fire And Water [Remastered]
Free emerged from the British blues boom with a tight, muscular style that framed Paul Rodgers' throaty voice. Guitarist PaulKossoff provides the perfect foil with incisive, measured solos exemplified by his contribution to "All Right Now." This successful single transformed the group from club to festival status. Free's unhurried, careful intensity is captured perfectly on the album's title track and "Oh I Wept," two songs charged with emotion. Where many contemporaries tended towards excess, Free implied a resonant power, particularly through Andy Fraser's liquid bass work, which weaves between the melody lines, rather than asserting them. FIRE AND WATER is a high spot in heavy rock; rather than merely asserting masculine qualities, this album also shows a rare vulnerability. SKU: 1066336

Past Lives
Black Sabbath: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Geezer Butler (bass); Bill Ward (drums). Principally recorded live in Manchester and London, England in 1973. Includes liner notes by Bruce Pilato. Hot on the heels of Ozzy Osbourne's rebirth as a pop culture icon comes PAST LIVES, Black Sabbath's first official Ozzy-era live recording. Initially released as an unauthorized 1980 recording called LIVE AT LAST, disc one takes the same material and considerablycleans up its fidelity. The album was recorded at a pair of 1973 UK shows in Manchester and London. Among the thunderous standards trotted out are "Sweet Leaf," "War Pigs," "Snowblind," and of course "Paranoid." Still decades away from the neurological damage caused by long-time drug and alcohol abuse, Ozzy is in fine fettle, incessantly declaring his love for the crowd when he's not exhorting them to clap. Tony Iommi's tasty riffing is equally impressive while his range offers up some surprises, be it the jazz-inflected playing that finds him briefly transforming the Sabs into a swinging trio on "Wicked World" or the medieval-flavored chords sprinkled into the intro of the classic "Children Of The Grave." Disc 2 is a bit spottier as it draws from various locations and dates during the '70s for Sab nuggets like "N.I.B.," "Fairies Wear Boots," and "Iron Man." Die-hards will bask in the greatness of the oft-bootlegged "Megalomania" and a chilling reading of "Black Sabbath." SKU: 1075349

Raw Deluxe
Jungle Brothers: Mike G., Afrika Baby Bam, Sammy B. Additional personnel: De La Soul, Q-Tip. Producers: Jungle Brothers, Djinji Brown, The Roots, Roc Raider, Knobody. Recorded at Greene Point Studios, Brooklyn, New York and AXIS Studios, New York, New York. While not their most commercially successful record, RAW DELUXE is nevertheless a solid Jungle Brothers effort and a favorite among fans. Opening with "True Blue," a JBs theme song of sorts, the album does not disappoint. Clever rhymes and subtle rhythms provide backbone to the political message behind cuts such as "Black Man on Track" and "Moving Along." Highlights include "How Ya Want it We Got It," featuring Q-Tip among others, and the Stereo MCs' treatment of "Jungle Brother." "Bring it On" is the star of the album, however. A call to arms anda warning against complacency, this track recalls the finest moments of the JBs earlier albums. RAW DELUXE may not blaze new trails in rap, but its treatment of old school methods is superb in the Jungle Brothers' deluxe fashion. SKU: 1006734

Monster [ECD] [PA]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Contains fifteen untitled hidden tracks following "Re-Akshon Remix". Personnel: Killer Mike, Big Boi, Bizarre, J-Sweet, Slimm Calhoun, Rock D, Fass Black, T.I., Bun B, Bone Crusher (rap vocals); Dan "Thunda Dan" Marshal (guitar); HornsUnlimited (horns); The Beat Bullies (keyboards); Debra Killings (bass); Chris Saleh (drums). Producers include: Antwan Patton, Andre Benjamin, Killer Mike, Swiffman, Mr. DJ. As his debut kicks off, Killer Mike boasts "I'm a new breed of species/accursed to lips that speak my name/I'm different, twisted/my mind is not the same," a claim backed up by the subsequent tracks on MONSTER, which make it clear how Mike caught the eye of Outkast. Killer Mike made a high-profile debut with his blistering turn on Outkast's 2002 crossover hit "The Whole World," easily the most memorable guest spot of the year. It was hard not to be enraptured by his forceful, distinctive flow and insistent, slightly off-the-beat rapping style as he not only held his own, but almost stole the show from rap's most prominent innovators at the time. On MONSTER, Killer Mike's distinctively twisted mind goes off in millions of directions. Yes, there's the usual brash, arrogant assertions of the title track and the sweaty ode to the lust on "A.D.I.D.A.S.," but they boast unusually self-aware and thoughtful lyrics that could hold their own with the likes of Nas. MONSTER's high point may be "Scared Straight," an inmate's story as unflinching as the legendary documentary with which it shares its name. While Mike's from the Dirty South, he's not a typical representative of that sound. In fact, he's not typical in anything, which is what makes MONSTER so appealing. SKU: 1082880

It Had To Be You (The Great American Songbook Vol.1)
Personnel: Rod Stewart (vocals); Jimmy Rip, Jim Fox, Bob Mann, Jeff Mironov, Dennis Budimir (guitar); Dan Higgins (clarinet, alto saxophone); Mike Brecker, Dave Koz (tenor saxophone); Arturo Sandoval (trumpet, flugelhorn); Chris Botti (trumpet); Rob Mounsey (piano, keyboards); Renato Neto, Will Hollis, Randy Kerber (piano, synthesizer); Lee Musker, Don Sebesky, Russ Kassoff, Randy Waldman (piano); Philippe Saisse (keyboards); Andy Chukerman (synthesizer); Chuck Demonico, David Finck, Bob Magnusson, Reggie McBride, Dave Carpenter (bass); Tal Bergman (drums, programming); John Ferraro, Alan Schwartzberg, Shawn Pelton, Harvey Mason (drums). Producers: Phil Ramone, Richard Perry, Clive Davis. Includes liner notes by Bill Zehme. IT HAD TO BE YOU was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. Given former rock god Rod Stewart's transformation over the course of the '90s into the world's favorite pop balladeer, it's perhaps no great surprise that he should take on the Great American Songbook in the classic style. Certainly lesser talents than his have gone down that road tono small amount of commercial success. And with the help of Clive Davis--who's helped other old-school rock icons reinvent themselves--how could IT HAD TO BE YOU not spell success? Turns out Rod's raspy tenor fits nicely into old familiar tunes like "These Foolish Things" and "The Very Thought of You," but then, he was always a romantic at heart, he just hadn't figured out how to tap into his inner Bryan Ferry. One might question the presence of thin-sounding string synthesizer on some cuts in place of a real orchestra (surely the Stewart-financed budget wasn't that small), and the arrangements for the tracks that do feature orchestra won't exactly make anyone forget Gordon Jenkins, but for the pop/rock audience that's perhaps only passingly familiar with this musical world, Stewart should provide an affable guide and effective entry point into the realm of Porter, Gershwin, et al. Brigade
Sensing that they had perhaps gone overboard in sweetening their sound with too many synthesizers on their past two hit albums, 1985's HEART and 1987's BAD ANIMALS, Heart attempted a return to basics for their first '90s release, BRIGADE. While not as raw and straight-ahead as early classics such as DREAMBOAT ANNIE, it was another releaseworthy of chart success and fit perfectly into the rock radio climate of the time. Like all of Heart's past records, BRIGADE's track list is a blend of both ballads ("Secret," "I Don't Want to Need You") and rockers ("Wild Child," "The Night"). SKU: 1005227

I'm Still In Love With You
Personnel: Al Green (vocals); Tennie Hodges (guitar); Andrew Love, Ed Logan (tenor saxophone); James Mitchell (baritone saxophone); Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Jack Hale (trombone); Charles Hodges (piano, organ); Leroy Hodges (bass); Howard Grimes, Al Jackson (drums); Rhodes, Chalmers & Rhodes (background vocals). Recorded at Royal Recording Studios, Memphis, Tennessee. Originally released on Hi (32074). Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. I'M STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU, from late 1972, finds Green downplaying the gritty, funky side of his style in favor of a smoother, more luxurious sound; consequently, it sets the standard for the next 20-plus years of R&B music. Still backed by producer Willie Mitchell's phenomenal stable of musicians, including drummer Al Jackson andthe three Hodges brothers, Green reached deep into his soul to pull out one of the finest albums of his (and, arguably, anyone else's) career. The opener, "I'm Still In Love With You," is classic Al Green, with staccato punctuation from the Memphis Horns and Jackson's relaxed, but irresistibly syncopated, drum pattern setting the stage for Green's trademark declarations of devotion. "Love And Happiness" marks the subtle introduction of a darker mood and boasts a characteristically inventive chord progression. Continuing his tradition of turning unlikely outside material into gorgeous R&B, Green works his soulful magic on Kris Kristofferson's ballad "For The Good Times" and Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman." The high point comes with "Simply Beautiful," an aptly-titled tune that finds Green weaving his ethereal falsetto in and around a hypnotic groove with a grace that justifies his reputation as the king of R&B crooners. In short, a perfect album. SKU: 1007434

Alive
Personnel: Grant Green (guitar); Claude Bartee (tenor saxophone); William Bivens (vibraphone); Ronnie Foster, Neal Creque (organ); Idris Muhammad (drums); Joseph Armstrong (congas). Producer: Francis Wolff. Reissue producer: Bob Belden. Recorded live at the Cliche Lounge, Newark, New Jersey on August 15, 1970. Originally released on Blue Note (84360). Includes liner notes by Stanley Dance and Bob Belden. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Kurt Lundvall. Recorded live in 1970 at the Cliche Lounge in Newark, New Jersey, ALIVE! is Grant Green at his funkiest. Often spurned by critics in his late period for selling out, Green churns out burning riffs and fiery solos on this date, regardless of style. Also making significant contributions to the date are the exceptional organists Neal Creque and Ronnie Foster, saxophonist Claude Bartee, vibraphonist William Bivens, and the irrepressible Idris Muhammad on drums. Whether its raging funk, dreamy Latin, or down-home soul, Green and his men perform with style and flare that is unsurpassed. Many tracks will be familiar to listeners as the band covers a good many pop songs like Kool & The Gang's "Let The Music Take Your Mind" and the Isley Brothers' "It's Your Thing." While this may seem unforgivable to some, Green's stunningly expressive renditions of Creque's "Time To Remember" and Herbie Hancock's classic "Maiden Voyage" should dissuade all doubts as to where the music wascoming from. Sadly, most tracks are faded out before the club's patrons applauded, but plenty of cheers were captured as individual band introductions were made. Indeed, applause was warranted as Green was still in command of his highly regarded style. SKU: 1047789

Apollo (Atmospheres & Soundtracks)
Full title: Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundtracks. Personnel: Brian Eno; Daniel Lanois, Roger Eno. An invitation to score Al Reinert's film of the Apollo Mission's lunar landing provided Eno with the "opportunity to explore the feelings of space travel." APOLLO is "one small step " for Eno, here working both within and beyond the conceptual confines of his Ambient series. The disc's dozen gorgeous, evocative miniatures see Eno's first collaborative work with producer/guitarist Daniel Lanois--a collaborator who would prove central to many of Eno's subsequent projects--and with his own brother, pianist Roger Eno. APOLLO contains some of Eno's most carefully crafted melodies, wrought impressionistically in limpid, quicksilver synth and gilded with Lanois's liquid guitar lines. "Matta" and "Under Stars II" imagine the wonders of weightlessness and zero-gravity drift. Lanois's "Silver Morning" views the dawn's smoldering glow from above, while the golden rays of "Deep Blue Day" strain to break at the planet's horizon. "An Ending (Ascent)" watches tearfully from the heavens as a tiny blue Earth falls away into the cradling arms of space; "Always Returning" welcomes the sight of terra firma's green expanses; and the twinkling "Stars"casts its eyes heavenward with a new sense of respect and homesick longing. An ambient masterpiece. SKU: 6586095

Invisible Touch
Genesis: Phil Collins (vocals, drums, percussion); Mike Rutherford (guitar, bass); Tony Banks (keyboards, synthesizer, bass). Recorded at the Farm, Surrey, England in 1985 & 1986. When Genesis reconvened to record 1986's INVISIBLE TOUCH, Phil Collins had a thriving solo career in both music and film, Tony Banks was recording movie scores, and Mike Rutherford was doing well in Mike & the Mechanics. Though it may have seemed impossible for the band to do better as a unit, this record spun off five Top 5 hits including the chart-topping title track. By tapping into a baby-boomer market that had lots of disposable income, Genesis became an adult contemporary god. INVISIBLE TOUCH represented the perfect hybrid that Genesis had been striving for: a pop sound mated with prog-rock flair. "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" demonstrated this perfectly. Despite being over eight minutes long, the topic of dysfunctional relationships had enough universal appeal in it to be used in a beer commercial. "Land of Confusion," a straightforward number commenting on the pervasive greed of the '80s was one of the album's hit singles along with the soft-rock ballad "Throwing It All Away." The Domino Suite ("In the Glow of the Night," "The Last Domino") may have been a nod to the band's more progressive past, but the sweeping instrumental, "The Brazilian," truly harkened back to Genesis' art-rock glory days. Mingus
Personnel: Joni Mitchell (guitar, vocals); Wayne Shorter (soprano saxophone); Herbie Hancock (electric piano); Jaco Pastorius (bass, horn arrangement); Peter Erskine (drums); Don Alias (congas); Emil Richards (percussion). Engineers: Henry Lewy, Steve Katz, Jerry Solomon. Recorded at A&M Studios, Hollywood, California and Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Joni Mitchell's most controversial album is the infamous MINGUS. A tribute to the legendary jazz bassist of the same name, this is an intriguing meeting of Joni's sultry, burnished vocals and some of the best modern jazz musicians, at the intersection of pop and jazz. Critics in both the rock and jazz worlds unjustly dismissed the record as an attempt by Mitchell to exploit Mingus or to needlessly elevate pop to a more sophisticated level. Mitchell's voice is well suited to the moody jazz melody of Mingus' "A Chair In The Sky." The melodic comments of the masterful Jaco Pastorius' fretless bass weave their way seductively through Joni's melancholy interpretation of "Sweet Sucker Dance." The high point of the album, however, is the funky "The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines" which benefits from Pastorius' gurgling bass groove and dynamic horn arrangement. The album finale is the beautiful ballad "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," on which Mitchell delivers one of the most heartfelt and stunning vocal performances ofher career. To complete the picture, snippets of conversations with Mingus are inserted between tracks to draw the album into a cohesive whole. SKU: 5047260

Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To
TAKING DRUGS TO MAKE MUSIC TO TAKE DRUGS TO is a compilation that includes early demos and B-sides. For the majority of its six-year career, Britain's Spacemen 3 pursued its sound-for-sound's-sake obsessions innear-total oblivion. It turns out, however, that the band was merely a decade or so ahead of its time. Spacemen 3 featured guitarist/keyboardists Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember and Jason "Spaceman" Pierce. They later formed Spectrum and Spiritualized, respectively, and the much more commercially and critically successful '90s work of those two sonic iconoclasts has fueled much more interest in Spacemen 3 than the band ever received during its 1985-91 lifespan. The aptly titled TAKING DRUGS TO MAKE MUSIC TO TAKE DRUGS TO, first released as a sanctioned bootleg in 1990 but made more widely available in 1994, shows the Spacemen at the beginning. The disc features very early recordings of songs, including the band's signature track, "Walkin' With Jesus," that function as first drafts of ideas more fully explored later. This is not a good starting point for non-initiates, but fans will find TAKING DRUGS fascinating. SKU: 1030305

Big Picture, The [PA]
Personnel includes: Big L, Tupac Shakur, Sadat X, Guru, Kool G. Rap, Fat Joe, Stan Spit, A.G., Miss Jones, Big Daddy Kane, O.C., Remy Martin. Producers include: DJ Premier, Ron Browz, Ron G, Lord Finesse, Pete Rock. Engineers include: Dejuann "DK" Richardson, Max Vargas, Erik Lynch. Considering the mortality rate of rappers, which often seems slightly higher than that of kamikaze pilots, Big L's tragically early passing isn't such a shock. What brings the listener up short on the posthumous BIG PICTURE (released over a year after Big L's death) is the way L's descriptions of violenceseem like a self-fulfilling prophecy. The great acclaim he's earned isn't based on the graphic quality of his gangsta tales, though. As THE BIG PICTURE makes clear, L's worldview extends beyond street crime to a broader sociological scope. He even displays a fair amount of humor, as on "Ebonics," a virtual glossary of street slang terms. Even his proclamations of sexual prowess on "Size 'em Up" have an air of fun about them, as though he knows how far over the top he's going in his statements of machismo. Though he may allow himself a degree of ironic detachment, it's clear that Big L firmly believed everything that came out of his mouth, and it's that combination of commitment and sarcasm that makes THE BIG PICTURE work. Invisible Band, The
Travis: Francis Healy, Douglas Payne, Andy Dunlop, Neil Primrose. Additional personnel: Millennia Strings (strings); Jason Falkner (keyboards). Recorded at Ocean Way Studios, Los Angeles, California and Air Studios, London, England. Travis's second album THE MAN WHO made them one of the biggest bands in the UK. With all eyes upon the group for a follow-up, the foursome opts not for the deconstructed expectation-confounded tactics of Radiohead's KID A, but instead continues on the same path they'd already been heading down. THE INVISIBLE BAND is considerably softer than the band's previous albums, pursuing the ballad as transcendent mode of expression, but the popcraft is just as winningly melodic, the guitars just as jangly and inviting, and Fran Healy's songs as subtly accessible as ever. There are a few unusual touches (the banjo on "Sing," the electronic squiggles ending "Afterglow"), but for the most part, THE INVISIBLE BAND is full of simple, infectious melodies, intelligently expressed emotions, and a warmth that finds Travis aligned with the likes of Coldplay in open-hearted opposition to the Oasis/Blur "it's all about me" school of Britpop. Closing with one of the album's most powerful songs, the affecting, broken-hearted ballad "The Humpty Dumpty Love Song," THE INVISIBLE BAND is an admirable displayof Travis's continued strength and staying power. No One Cares
Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Gordon Jenkins, Nelson Riddle (arranger, conductor). Recorded between 1953 and 1959. Includes liner notes by Pete Welding. This is part of Capitol Records "Entertainer Of The Century" series. This 1959 recording stands with ONLY THE LONELY and IN THE WEE SMALL HOURS as one of Sinatra's premier albums of "saloon songs"--those songs in which he takes the role of the jilted lover drowning his sorrows in drink and telling his sad story to anyone who'll listen (most likely the bartender, as in ONLY THE LONELY's "One For My Baby"). When it comes to elegant displays of heartsick despair, latter-day crooners like Chris Isaak can't hold a candle to the old master. Sinatra inhabits these songs so convincingly it's hard to believe his real life was the lurid, Hefneresque tale that it actually was. On chestnuts like "Stormy Weather" and "I'll Never SmileAgain," his is the voice of a man bereft of love and unable to vanquish his obsessions. On the gorgeous ballad "I Don't Stand A Ghost Of A Chance With You," he doesn't even get that far; his character can't even escape the wall of self-doubt that renders his romantic aspirations futile. Gordon Jenkins's orchestrations complement Sinatra's |
