Kleenex Girl Wonder: Graham Smith (vocals, various instruments). This is a mind-boggling collection of great songs. Graham Smith is a one-man songwriting steamroller and he has not put one piece of filler on this 25-song disc. With a lo-fi recording technique and a Beatle-esque vibe, KGW draws inevitable comparisonsto Guided By Voices. But Graham Smith lacks the "cheese-filled-monkeys-lick-my-eyeballs" type of lyrics that Robert Pollard seems so fond of. There's also no strident dissonance to be found on this collection. The lyrics are all concerned with romantic matters and the melodies are all singable and infectious. A couple of songs have some neat-o electronic glitches, which put a great, quirky spin on the lo-fi sound. A wonderful and accessible bag of pop surprises. SKU: 1023161

Sublime Illusion
Full performer name: Eliades Ochoa & Cuarteto Patria. Eliades Ochoa & Cuarteto Patria: Eliades Ochoa (vocals, guitar); Humberto Ochoa (guitar, background vocals); William Calderon (double bass, background vocals); Roberto Torres (bongos, congas, percussion, background vocals); Eglis Ochoa (clave, maracas, background vocals). Additional personnel: Ry Cooder, David Hidalgo (guitar); Charlie Musselwhite (harmonica); Luis Gonzalez (horns); Joachim Cooder (drums, percussion). Recorded at Ocean Way Studios, Los Angeles, California. SUBLIME ILUSION was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Tropical Latin Performance. SUBLIME ILUSION was nominated for the 2000 Billboard Latin Music Award for Album Of The Year by a new artist. If it is true Cuban roots music that the people seek, they need look no further than Eliades Ochoa. This star of the BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB delivers 15 cuts worth of simmering, piquant son on his second solo opus. His robust voice leads the spare, acoustic band through an array ofhearty passion-tales, with a full compliment of rousing backup singers to answer him in each call-and-response. His 12-string guitar work is tasty as well, offering responsive chords and evocative, bucolic solos that echo far and wide. "Carino Falso" is a feverish tale of feigned love, with a clave that transcends idiom and should get any listener moving. "Pintate Los Labios Maria" offers one of the richer arrangements, with a haunting picture of beauty faded and renewed set in bright trumpet melodies and a rousing chorus. The bittersweet title cut follows a similar thread; Ochoa's singing is full of strategic vibratos and swells that betray youthful yearning. SKU: 1084480

Yield
YIELD contains a hidden track. Pearl Jam: Eddie Vedder (vocals, guitar); Stone Gossard, Mike McCready (guitar); Jeff Ament (bass); Jack Irons (drums). Recorded at Studio Litho and Bad Animals, Seattle, Washington; Southern Tracks Recording and Doppler, Atlanta, Georgia. "Do The Evolution" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance and Best Short Form Music Video. YIELD was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package. Nay-sayers and trends be damned. Pearl Jam's follow-up to 1996's NO CODE continues down the path of aggressive rock and roll, existential musings and musical experimentation. This isn't your older brother's grunge. Opening with the hard-driving "Brain Of J," YIELD goes from a punky swagger representing man's arrogance in asserting his lofty place on the food chain ("Do The Evolution") to a free jazz approach and a disembodied Vedder vocal questioning the meaning of life ("Push Me, Pull Me"). Most of YIELD continues to ply the standard Pearl Jam sound: Vedder's pained emoting, the interesting use of dynamics between McCready and Gossard's guitars and solid rhythm-work from the Ament/Irons rhythm section. Rather than falling into the creative rut many huge bands succumb to, Pearl Jam's music has instead developed its own identity while still walking the fringes of the unorthodox. Hence the inclusion of aweird, untitled percussive instrumental cut in Jack Irons' home studio and an Eastern-flavored hidden track pointing towards the influence of the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Tomb Raider - The Cradle Of Life
Original score composed by Alan Silvestri. Not quite as eclectic as its predecessor, LARA CROFT TOMBRAIDER: THE CRADLE OF LIFE is nonetheless as hard hitting as this film series' namesake. Christian aggro-rockers P.O.D. offer an ethereal Paul Oakenfold remix of the churning "Satellite," Saliva keeps the intensity level up with the grinding "Time," and Filter rocks out with the soaring "The Only Way (Is the Wrong Way)." Keeping the mix interesting is the inclusion of electronica stalwarts like the Crystal Method (a thumping "Starting Over") and Moby, whose already funky "Jam For the Ladies" gets taken to another level by way of a killer Jason Nevins remix. Other standouts include "Tears From the Moon" (Sinead O'Connor's collaboration with Front Line Assembly offshoot Conjure One) and the Dandy Warhols' "The Last High," which comes off sounding likean outtake from a mid-'70s David Bowie album. THE CRADLE OF LIFE is packed with the kind of hard-hitting fare that makes it easy to visualize Angelina Jolie swinging through temples and other assorted daring feats. SKU: 1086283

Chemical Wedding, The
Personnel: Bruce Dickinson (vocals); Arthur Brown (spoken vocals); RoyZ, Adrian Smith (guitar, keyboards); Greg Schultz (keyboards); Eddie Casillas (bass); Dave Ingraham (drums); Frazeeke MC, The Guru, Willy 666, Craig Lichtenstein (background vocals). Engineers: Joe Floyd, Stan Katayama, Roy Z. Recorded at Sound City, Van Nuys, California and Silver Cloud, Burbank, California. While his ex-counterparts in Iron Maiden continue to pump out '80s-style metal with vocalist Blaze Bayley, screamer Bruce Dickinson takes that same metal style and adds another layer. THE CHEMICAL WEDDING contains all the elements that made Maiden unique, while adding a heaviness and power that take it to the next level. This album is truly thunderous, while also maintaining a melodic quality throughout. The opening track, "King In Crimson" sets the pace for a fast and furious record. The title tune is classic metal with a mid-tempo groove. "Killing Floor," complete with references to Satan, conveys a dark, angry mood. "Book of Thel" makes it clear that the pairing of former Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith and Dickinson is as potent as ever. The musicianship and production are rock solid, and Dickinson is showing a newfound vocal control. Fans of this amazing singer and lyricist will find this disc quite satisfying, as it holds up to all previous efforts. SKU: 1069897

Days Of Future Passed
The Moody Blues: Justin Hayward (vocals, guitar); Ray Thomas (flute, harmonica); Mike Pinder (keyboards); John Lodge (bass); Graeme Edge (drums). Additional personnel: Peter Knight (conductor); The London Festival Orchestra. Includes liner notes by Hugh Mendl. All tracks have been digitally remastered DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED is the Moody Blues' true contribution to rock history: the most cohesive integration of rock songs with orchestral music ever produced. Asked by Deram Records to create a rock reworking of Dvorak's "New World" Symphony, the Moodies instead wrote their own symphony, a song cycle that describes the emotions that accompany each part of the day, from dawn ("Dawn Is A Feeling") to night (the classic "Nights In White Satin"). The songs are connectedby lush orchestral passages in which the basic musical themes are reworked. Meanwhile, the band had already begun to sound like its own orchestra, using signature Mellotron string sounds, flutes, tympani and multiple vocalists. SKU: 4111879

Trafalgar
The Bee Gees: Barry Gibb (vocals, guitar); Maurice Gibbs (vocals, piano, organ, mellotron, bass); Robin Gibb (vocals). Additional personnel: Alan Kendall (guitar); Joeff Bridgford (drums). Recorded at I.B.C. Studios, London, England. 1971's TRAFALGAR can be seen as a distillation of the ideas explored on 1969's bountiful double album ODESSA. Though other material was released in between these two, there is still a discernible aural link. While ODESSA consolidated the Bee Gee's songwriting abilities, it was sort of their WHITE ALBUM, going off in a million different (though wonderful) stylistic directions. TRAFALGAR builds on the compositional growth of ODESSA, but is more stylistically focused, concentrated on the pop-rock vein that is the band's greatest strength. Though it's best known for the classic, heart-rending ballad "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" (later done the honor of an Al Green cover version), TRAFALGAR is full of top-notch Gibb compositions, like the Orbisonesque Robin Gibb feature "Remembering" and the moving ballad "I Don't Wanna Live Inside Myself." Good Times [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Producers: Afroman, The Salavas Brothers, Dolowite, Loopy Octopus. "Because I Got High" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. Straight out of Hattiesburg, Mississippi comes Afroman, (AKA Joseph Foreman), a guitar-playing hip-hop fiend whose sing-songy anti-drug anthem "Because I Got High" quickly became the summer anthem of 2001. The fusion of doo-wop harmonies and a good-time, laid-back delivery (featuring his buddies laughing it up in the background) found Afroman's breakout hit championed by Howard Stern, filmmaker Kevin Smith (who featured it on the soundtrack to JAY & SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK), and eventually MTV. The rest of GOOD TIMES is in the same vein--good-time rap dealing with hijinks that bring to mind Ice Cube's escapades in his "Friday" flicks. When Afroman isn't boasting of randy conquests ("Crazy Rap") or giving itup to those who'd rather booze it up ("Let's All Get Drunk"), he's recycling the "Because I Got High" groove for a tongue-in-cheek autobiographical message of hope ("The American Dream"). Other notable cuts include the chicken-scratch guitar-driven ode to sexual frustration "She Won't Let Mea" and a slice of childhood nostalgia that merges beat-box rhythms with an old-school spiritual ("Hush"). GOOD TIMES is all smoke and no mirrors. SKU: 1066653

Consumed [Digipak]
Plastikman: Richie Hawtin. Recorded at The Building, Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Floating in an ocean of dubby ambience, CONSUMED, Richie Hawtin's third album under his Plastikman alias, is a sprawling electronic epic more concerned with evoking a personalized soundspace than flooding the dancefloor with beats. Having risen to fame among the second generation of Detroit-area minimalist techno artists, the Windsor, Ontario-born Hawtin has always applied a "less is more" philosophy to his pieces. Yet four years removed from his last Plastikman release, the dancefloor paean MUSIK, this philosophy has manifested itself in a murky sonic swamp (the low-end rules here.), full of ominous echoes. Hawtin has created an ambient perversion, treating wide-open soundscapes by dubbing and filtering them until they're nearly claustrophobic. And yet the grooves his strangled-pulses-as-beats create are a stoner head-nod of the highest order, stretching forever until they seem to collapse into themselves. It's like a soundtrack to a bliss-out in a black hole. SKU: 1049868

Dad Loves His Work [Remastered]
Also available in a 3-pack with JT and FLAG. Personnel: James Taylor (vocals, acoustic guitar, bass harmonica); Waddy Wachtel (acoustic & electric guitars, slide guitar); Dan Dugmore (electric guitar, pedal steel guitar); Fingers Taylor (harmonica); Don Grolnick (piano, Fender Rhodes, organ, keyboards); Bill Cuomo (synthesizer); Leland Sklar (bass); Rick Marotta (drums, congas, timbales, percussion); Peter Asher (percussion, background vocals); John David Souther, David Lasley, Arnold McCuller, Jim Gilstrap, Benard Ighner, Jennifer Warnes (background vocals). All tracks have been digitally remastered. James Taylor helped pioneer the singer-songwriter movement of the late 1960s with songs of surprising musical sophistication and lyrics that were both introspective and gently poetic. For decades to follow, Taylor continued to produce music that was personal, accessible and enjoyable. Here, he has matured into a pop craftsman of the first order. On DAD LOVES HIS WORK the arc of his talent continues to rise. The radio-friendly "Hard Times" would make Smokey Robinson proud. "Summer's Here" is jazzy, breezy and as warm as the season it celebrates. "Her Town Too," co-written with John David Souther, marked another notch high up on the pop charts for J.T. SKU: 1034864

Comin' At Ya
Recorded at Electric Lady Studio, New York City. Most Persuasions albums tend to strike a balance between older doo-wop and soul tunes and newer material; this one, however, harkens primarily to the group's genre roots, with the notable exception of an authoritativetake on Paul Simon's "Love Me Like a Rock." Highlights include a version of the Oriole's classic "Crying in the Chapel" that occasions some particularly seraphic high harmonies, a breezy up-tempo run through of the Drifters "Drip Drop," a hilariously hammy "Besame Mucho," and a version of the Clovers' "One Mint Julep" rendered with the just the right on-the-nod insouciance. Highly recommended, and not just to oldies fans. SKU: 1008644

Standard Time Vol.1
Personnel: Wynton Marsalis (trumpet); Marcus Roberts (piano); Robert Leslie Hurst III (bass); Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums). Recorded at RCA Studio A, New York, New York on May 29 & 30 and September 24 & 25, 1986. Includesliner notes by Stanley Crouch. The first in a series, in which Marsalis re-investigates the jazz standards that many of his generation have, for one reason or another, rejected. The classic tunes that were part of the "songbooks" of all the great improvisers of the tradition--Charlie Parker, Art Blakey, Clark Terry, Max Roach--are here, and Marsalis and Co. carry on the tradition of making these tunes their own. He wails "Cherokee" while paying tribute to the style and influence of Dizzy Gillespie with a rapid-fire muted sound. "Goodbye" and "New Orleans" look to the sound of early-'60s Miles Davis. Marcus Roberts is a joy to hear. His piano playing draws influence from Monk and Bill Evans, and he executes his carefully-chosen notes and phrases with perfect, no-excess flair. None of this comes off as imitation, but rather shows contemporary players continuing a great tradition. Marsalis uses this album to focus on, and pay tribute to, the standards and styles that formed the foundations for this superior American art form. SKU: 1015530

Hot Fuss
Although they are Las Vegas, Nevada natives, the Killers have more in common with the retro-New Wave sounds of New York City than with the casino crooners most often associated with Sin City. On HOT FUSS, the shaggy-haired quartet matches 1960s garage attitude and Strokes-like vocal swagger with a danceable, bass guitar-driven sound that pays lavish tribute to '80s pop heroes Duran Duran and Simple Minds. With "On Top," the combo adds the soaring, delay-laden guitars of U2 and the Fixx, while "Somebody Told Me" features a bouncy disco beat that recalls the Pet Shop Boys. Not content to be pegged as a retro-revival act, however, the Killers imbue each song on this fierce debut with a healthy dose ofnew-millennium rock snarl. SKU: 6559031

County Fair 2000
Personnel: Phil Alvin (vocals, guitar, banjo, harmonica, marksophone, piano); Fayard Nicholas, Eddie Baytos (vocals, percussion); Mary Franklin, Top Jimmy (vocals); Dave Myers (guitar, bass); Jerome Bowman (guitar, background vocals); Robert Lily, Gary Masi (guitar); John Bambridge (reeds); Elliot Caine, Ike "Diz" Williams (trumpet); Jim Maihack (trombone, tuba); Bob Ringwald (piano); Travis Dickerson (organ); Phil Thomas, Ken Sara (drums); The Blasters, Billy Boy Arnold, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Cesar Rosas. Engineers include: Bruce Witkin, Ed Cody, Cesar Rosas. Brothers Phil and Dave Alvin were the heart of California roots-rockers the Blasters. After songwriter/guitarist Dave's departure for a solo career, Phil kept the group alive, but mostly on a local performance level, not as a recording unit. He released his first solo album in 1986, but it took him eight years to make another. Like its predecessor, COUNTY FAIR finds Phil Alvin backed by a shifting cast of characters, exploring an eclectic batch of American roots styles, from blues to country toR&B and rockabilly. On several songs, he's backed by the '90s version of the Blasters, but Alvin goes further afield in collaborations with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and singer Mary Franklin. The solo efforts of each brother underline what the other brought to the Blasters; Dave's singing has never been described as mellifluous and songwriting is not really Phil's forte. The strongest cuts on COUNTY FAIR are those where Phil draws on his encyclopedic knowledge of American musical history by covering obscure blues and R&B gems; the most effective moments are those where he accompanies himself on guitar and breathes new life into such Americana relics as "That Thing" and "Callin' Corrine." Leftism
Leftfield: Neil Barnes, Paul Daley. Additional personnel: Earl Sixteen, Papa Dee, Djum Djum, Toni Halliday, Danny Red, John Lydon, Lemn Sissay (vocals); Kevin Haynes (berimbau). Engineers: Joe Gibb, Adam Wren, Ollie J., Simon Duffy. Recorded at Rollover Studios, London, England. With Leftism, Leftfield made the crossover of techno into the pop mainstream two years before the likes of the Chemical Brothers. Embarking on a series of high-profile collaborations, they introduced to the charts a musical manifesto that had been popular in the clubs for years - including ambient ('Song Of Life'), pure techno, ragga, African tribal chants ('Afro-Left') and the all-important remix. The pumping, snarling 'Open Up', featuring JohnLydon, predated the Prodigy in its blend of punk and dance, and 'Original', with Curve's Toni Halliday, ironically inspired a multitude of imitators. Most of these tracks have become ubiquitous through mainstream television and film, and it is easy to forget that, before Leftfield, techno music had only rarely stepped outside clubland.
