Desire [SACD]
Personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano); Vincent Bell (bouzouki); Scarlet Rivera (violin); Dom Cortese (accordion); Rob Stoner (bass, background vocals); Howard Wyeth (drums); Luther (congas); Emmylou Harris, Ronee Blakley, Steve Soles (background vocals). DESIRE was the studio realization of the Rolling Thunder revue's sound. The musicians involved in this mid-'70s Dylan project were more than a backup band; they forged a distinctive musical vision, loose and swirling, the perfect aural equivalent of the traveling gypsy/carnival image they affected onstage. Drummer Howie Wyeth, who possessed an uncannily sympathetic ear for accompanying singer-songwriters, and violinist Scarlet Rivera, built their careers on the foundation of the Rolling Thunder band. Many critics balked at Dylan's lyrical collaborations with Jacques Levy on this album, but their reservations were just glorified xenophobia. Levy's flowing, colloquial style suited Dylan's music and delivery perfectly, and the two produced several gems. "Isis" is an exotic tale of intrigue that turnsout to be a unique love story. "Hurricane" breathlessly tells the true story of Ruben Carter, a boxer framed for murder and acquitted years after DESIRE's release. It still stands as one of Dylan's most exciting, emotional tunes. Waka/Jawaka
Personnel: Frank Zappa (acoustic & electric guitars, percussion); Tony Duran (vocals, slide guitar); Jeff Simmons (vocals, Hawaiian guitar); Sal Marquez (vocals, trumpet, flugelhorn, chimes); Erroneous (vocals, electric bass); Chris Peterson, Janet Ferguson (vocals); "Sneaky Pete" Kleinow (pedal steel guitar); Joel Peskin (tenor saxophone); Mike Altschul (tenor & baritone saxophones, piccolo, bass flute, bass clarinet); Bill Byers, Ken Shroyer (trombone, baritone horn); Aynsley Dunbar (drums). Recorded at Paramount Studios, Los Angeles, California. Frank Zappa sustained a serious injury on December 10, 1971 while performing at the Rainbow Theater in England, when an overzealous fan pushed him off the stage. Zappa was forced to keep a low profile while recovering from this traumatic event, but he was in the middle of a very fertile recording period--his classic albums HOT RATS, BURNT WEENY SANDWICH, and CHUNGA'S REVENGE had all recently been released. Instead of moping around, Zappa immersed himself in writing new music, and 1972's WAKA/JAWAKA was his first album to appear since his great fall from the concert stage. Although not as instantly rewarding as the aforementioned HOT RATS, WAKA/JAWAKA is still a solid Zappa album. Like its predecessors listed above, it contains elements of Frank's instantly recognizable jazz-rock fusion. But due to its gritty rock production, the four-song album (two tracks are very lengthy, the others shorter) is not your normal fusion effort. The opener "Big Swifty" leans more towards rock (thanks to Zappa's distorted guitar riffs), while the closing titletrack is jazzier, as a horn section plays the tune's multiple melodies. SKU: 1008251

Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
Personnel: Sarah McLachlan (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, piano); Bill Dillon (guitar, Guitorgan, piano, bass); Jane Scarpantoni (cello); Michel Dubeau (saxophone); Pierre Marchand (piano, keyboards, bass, percussion, programming); David Kershaw (Hammond B-3 organ); Brian Minato (bass); Jerry Marotta (drums, percussion); Guy Nadon, Ashwin Sood, Lou Shefano (drums). FUMBLING TOWARDS ECSTASY was nominated for a 1995 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. Heavily atmospheric, building around intertwined harmonies and lush arrangements, FUMBLING TOWARDS ECSTASY might remind some of early Sinead O'Connor. McLachlan's ethereal vocal style pulls from the same sources as O'Connor, but add a calm that's more akin to contemporary jazz or new age than the pop charts McLachlan has climbed. The lifeblood of her songs are her physical and emotional relationships with people. With lyrics centered around satisfaction and the ways to maintain it, much of FUMBLING TOWARDS ECSTASY doesn't fumble but caresses. Her lyrics compare love to ice cream, and promise kisses to make her lover breathless. Listening to the album, it's not hard to imagine what McLachlan has on her mind, nor why she's on the charts. FUMBLING TOWARDS ECSTASY shows an artist busily experimenting with the different songwriting textures available. The big drum sound in "Possession" and the chiming U2-like guitar of "Plenty" give McLachlan plenty of room to breathe, but do not suffocate her in one dismissablecategory. SKU: 1003249

When Somebody Loves You
Personnel: Alan Jackson (vocals, guitar); Bruce Watkins (acoustic guitar); Brent Mason (electric guitar); Paul Franklin (steel guitar, dobro); Stuart Duncan (mandolin, fiddle); Terry McMillan (Jew's harp, harmonica); Larry Franklin (fiddle); Gary Prim (piano, keyboards); Keith Stegall (piano); Glenn Worf (bass); Eddie Bayers (drums); John Wesley Ryles, Rhonda Vincent (background vocals). Recorded at The Castle, Franklin, Tennessee and The Sound Station, Nashville, Tennessee. It might seem ironic that traditionalist Alan Jackson would write a song about the Internet, but he's smart enough to realize that fans have always counted on country music to reflect their lives. With "www.memory," the first single from WHEN SOMEBODY LOVES YOU, Jackson sets computer-age lyrics against the most traditional of arrangements, and comes up with a heartbreaking love song that techno-geeks and technophobes alike can enjoy. Jackson's packed the rest of WHEN SOMEBODY LOVES YOU with a mixture of down-home ditties ("It's Alright To Be A Redneck," "Meat & Potato Man"), and tender, romantic ballads. Listening to him croon "I'm liking how my Jack & water/mixes with your Estee Lauder" (on "Maybe I Should Stay Here") is worth the priceof admission alone. But Jackson bites the hand that feeds him on the final track, "Three Minute Positive Not Too Country Uptempo Love Song." This putdown of radio programmers who'd like to see all country songs reduced to feel-good romantic mush is hilarious and, sadly, all too true. WHEN SOMEBODY LOVES YOU is proof that real country still matters in the age of cyberspace and focus groups--and Jackson's the one you can count on to deliver it. SKU: 1049148

Very Best Of Marvin Gaye, The (+DVD)
Personnel includes: Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, Kim Weston (vocals); The Vandellas (background vocals). Producers include: Smokey Robinson, Ashford & Simpson, Ivy Jo Hunter, Norman Whitfield, Harvey Fuqua. Compilation producer: Harry Weinger. Includes liner notes by David Ritz. This generous two-disc compilation does an excellent job of tracing soul legend Marvin Gaye's career. It moves from his earliest, most pop-oriented recordings ("How Sweet It Is," "I'll Be Doggone") to his famed duets with Tammi Terrell("Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing") and his later, more socially conscious work from the WHAT'S GOING ON era. Things kick off marvelously with the vibrant "Stubborn Kind of Fellow," where Marvin works his magic around sassy vocal assists from the Vandellas and a slightly Latin-tinged arrangement sporting flute and cowbell. Other stops along the way include songs from the ultimate make-out album LET'S GET IT ON, the latter-day glory of the subtly sensual "Sexual Healing," and of course the immortal "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," the scorned-love anthem whose ominous intro alone is enough to secure Mr. Gaye a place in pop heaven. If you're interested in this R&B giant's music but just want one bases-covering collection, this is the definitive release for you. SKU: 6554418

Dream Harder
Personnel: Mike Scott (vocals, guitars, keyboards, percussion, effects); Billy Connolly (spoken vocals); Chris Bruce (guitar); Ljubisa "Lubi" Ristic (sitar); Caroline Lavelle (cello); George Stathos (Greek clarinet); James Campagnola (saxophone); Scott Thunes, Kenny Aaronson, Brian Stanley (bass); Jim Keltner, Carla Azar, Thommy Price, Steve Holly (drums); Bashiri Johnson (congas, talking drum, shaker, tambourine); Jere Peters (rattle); Jules Shear, Pal Shazar, Laura Lee Ash, Darwin Buschman M.D., Roger Greenawalt, Fiona Prendergast, Terry Wetmore, Tawatha Agee, Cindy Mizelle, Fonzi Thornton (backgroundvocals). Engineers include: Bill Price, Niko Bolas, Joe Blaney. DREAM HARDER was the Waterboys' sixth and last album, barring a number of posthumous releases. Opening with the crunching power chords of "The New Life," it finds Mike Scott with a largely new backing band, a rekindled love of guitar, and a notion to move away from the Irish-influenced folk music of the past several Waterboys records. The combination of these factors makes for one of the loosest, most relaxed Waterboys outings since the band's early days. Standouts include the insistent, rolling pace of "Glastonbury Song," the oddly appropriate pairing of guitar heroics and dub rhythms of "Suffer," and the majestic "Love And Death," which is carried along, like all the best Waterboys songs, on Scott's earnest vocals. Also of note is "Spiritual City," which includes a looping, trance-like sitar and scat vocals. Overall, DREAM HARDER provides both a solid entry into, and fitting end to, the Waterboys saga; it's also an important signpost to Scott's subsequent solo career. SKU: 1019875

Greatest Hits
Personnel includes: Bob Seger (vocals, guitar, piano); Glen Frey (vocals); Joe Miquelon (electric guitar); Steve Lukather, Waddy Wachtel, Drew Abbott (guitar); Rick Vito (slide guitar); Alto Reed (saxophone); Roy Bittan (piano); Bill Payne (piano, organ, synthesizer); Doug Riley (piano, organ); Robyn Robbins (Mellotron, organ); Craig Frost (organ); Michael Boddicker (synthesizer); Chris Campbell, Bob Glaub (bass); Russ Kunkel, Charlie Allen Martin, David Teegarden (drums, percussion). Producers include: Jimmy Iovine, Jack Richardson, Bob Seger, Punch, Bill Szymczyk. Engineers include: Shelly Yakus, Brian Christian, Jim Bruzzese. Includes liner notes by Bob Seger. Detroit has produced more than its share of great music: from jazz stars like Hank, Thad & Elvin Jones; to the Motown stable of vocal artists, and legendary rhythm players Benny Benjamin and James Jamerson. Not to mention a whole lot of hard funk and primal metal, everyone from Funkadelic and Ted Nugent, to Iggy & The Stooges and the MC5--hard driving, rugged rock and roll. Put it all together with a touch of pop, and a lot of soul, and you've got Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band. It's easy to divine Seger's influence on the music of Bruce Springsteen, and draw parallels with the vocal style of Van Morrison. The epic themes of Seger's characters on "Night Moves" certainly parallel those of the folk heroes who populate Springsteen songs (though he began developing his menagerie a good decade before the Boss). The chant-like, testifying cadences of Seger's blowtorch voice, and his predilection for gospelish motifs, puts one in mind of the mighty Celt's visionary flights. And as the fine GREATESTHITS makes clear, Bob Seger's influence on contemporary roots music is enormous. A song such as "Like A Rock" practically defines a roots approach to power pop, while "Old Time Rock & Roll" finds Seger in an upbeat, Little Richard mode. Celebrations notwithstanding, "Still The Same" and "Turn The Page" are dark, unstinting unsentimental looks at the underbelly of the showbiz animal and the road. SKU: 1005408

Heroes [Remastered]
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, guitar, saxophone, keyboards, koto); Brian Eno (guitar, keyboards, synthesizer); Carlos Alomar, Robert Fripp (guitar); George Murray (bass); Dennis Davis (percussion); Tony Visconti, Antonia Maass (background vocals). Recorded at Hansa By The Wall, Berlin, Germany. Originally released on RCA (2522). Digitally remastered by Peter Mew and Nigel Reeve (1999, Abbey Road Studios, London, England). The Germanic feel of this album is not surprising, as David Bowie recorded it in Berlin during his period of infatuation with the city. HEROES is a much more lively affair than LOW and has the benefit of a title track that remains one of Bowie's finest songs, in addition to excellent contributions from Robert Fripp and Brian Eno. The thick, mysterious textures of "Beauty and the Beast" set the tone for the rest of the album. The Eno-influenced "Sense of Doubt" is the flip side to the majestic "Heroes"--dark and moody, as is "Neukoln". But,despite (or perhaps because of) the charged atmosphere of doom and gloom, this is a seminal Bowie album. SKU: 1025356

Fighting
Throughout Thin Lizzy's fitful and never-ending series of lineup changes (mainly in guitar players), the band did manage to stay true to leader Phil Lynott's desire that it remain a great guitar band. FIGHTING marks the beginning of the band's most commercially successful lineup (with Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson on guitar). Not coincidentally, the band's most consistent albums surfaced during this period as well. Lynott's grand artistic ambitions, which often resulted in half-baked concept ideas, began to reign themselves in to a more streamlined approach that better suited his basic hard rock approach. FIGHTING put forth the formula that earmarks nearly all of the band's best work: hard pumping rock & roll offset with tightly melodic dual guitar lines and Lynott's soulful vocals. Opening with Bob Seger's "Rosalie," a classic '70s power chord rocker, the band struts with confidence and more than a little swagger. The pounding "Fighting My Way Back," is propelled by a pulsing rhythm section, huge guitars, and sheer bravado on Lynott's part. And just when things seem to be on the verge of slipping into macho posturing, a yearning tear in Lynott's voice reveals the vulnerabilitythat lies beneath all barre chords. SKU: 4134762

Spend The Night [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The Donnas: Brett Anderson (vocals); Allison Robertson (guitar, background vocals); Maya Ford(bass, vibraslap, background vocals); Torry Castellano (drums, percussion, background vocals). At the risk of offending classicists, the Donnas are the great girl-punk group the Runaways were meant to be some 25 years earlier. Smartly, they avoid the codified copycat punk moves of the post-Green Day set and instead focus on the mid-'70s sound typified by the likes of the Ramones, the Dictators, and yes, the aforementioned rebel chicks. Accordingly, they manage the neat trick of beating the Strokes, Vines, etc. at their own game without even trying. As on their previous four (!) albums, the still-young Donnas provide a non-stop barrage of heavy guitar riffs, catchy-but-raw hooks, and plenty of pure punk energy. The fact that their pure punk/hard-rock sound never sounds contrived is a testament to the spirit and vitality that's lasted the group in such good stead throughout its existence. SKU: 1081316

Here For The Party
Debut album from the St. Louis based singer-songwriter. Released after the success of the (included) single 'Redneck Woman' the album combines deep south 'outlaw' country with the modern Nashville sound. Along with fellow 'Muzik Mafia' members such as Big & Rich, Wilson is seen as part of a 21st century roots country revival. The tracks on the album are comparable to such artists as Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn and Tanya Tucker with a morerock infused twist. SKU: 6565942

Everything Falls Apart
Contains the 1982 album EVERYTHING FALLSAPART plus bonus tracks. Husker Du: Bob Mould (vocals, guitar); Grant Hart (vocals, drums); Greg Norton (bass); Producers: Husker Du, Spot, Colin Mansfield. Reissue producers: Husker Du, Doug Myren. Engineers include: Spot, Steve Fjelstad, Matt Zimmerman. This 1993 reissue contains the Huskers' first full-length studio recording EVERYTHING FALLS APART along with various odds and ends from the same era. These include the anthemic "In a Free Land" single, an unreleased demo of "Do You Remember" (the title is the English translation of the Swedish term "husker du"), and an extended version of the choppy, Gang-of-Four-ish "Statues" single. On sonic blasts like "Wheels," "Afraid of Being Wrong" (featuring a chorus of "You're a freak/you're a freak") and the martial-sounding opener "From the Gut," the band is still in a hardcore punk mode. These tracks, which feature vocals that are more often shouted then sung, barrel forward on pure energy and end abruptly after two minutes or less. But while mostly a caustic batch of musical mayhem, EVERYTHING FALLS APART shows clear indications that the group was veering, albeit slowly, in the direction of accessible pop music. On the title track and other songs, Mould's ringing chords add a melodic element missing in much of the band's early work. In the record's lightest moment--relatively speaking of course--the band turns in a furious version of Donovan's "Sunshine Superman," the first of their many interesting covers. SKU: 1009498

Human
Sixth album from world fusion maestro follows 2001's 'Prophesy'. How Long Has This Been Going On
Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals, saxophone); Georgie Fame (vocals, Hammond B-3 organ); Annie Ross (vocals); Alan Skidmore, Leo Green, Pee Wee Ellis (saxophone); Guy Barker (trumpet); Robin Aspland (piano); Alec Dankworth (bass); Ralph Salmins(drums). Recorded live at Ronnie Scott's Club, London, England on May 3, 1995. Although touted as Morrison's first "jazz" release, this album is not radically different from his other '90s fare. Recorded live at Ronnie Scott's, a legendary London jazz club, HOW LONG HAS THIS BEEN GOING ON? finds the singer in top form covering jazz, blues and R&B standards. Morrison's extended re-working of his classic "Moondance" brings a be-bop inflected dimension to the song, and both the singer and band exude a joyful exuberance throughout the recording. In fact, Morrison seems unusually loose and downright happy whether belting out versions of classic genre pieces or revamping his own work. A recording that effectively captures an artist celebrating the joys of his own musical roots. SKU: 1005370

Press The Eject And Give Me The Tape
PRESS THE EJECT AND GIVE ME THE TAPE was originally released as a limited-edition bonus disc given away with copies of THE SKY'S GONE OUT. Bauhaus: Daniel Ash (vocals, guitar); David J. (vocals, bass); Peter Murphy (vocals); Peter Haskins (drums). Recorded live in London, England; Liverpool, England; Manchester, England; Paris, France. Recorded live at various venues between 1981 and 1982, PRESS THE EJECT AND GIVE ME THE TAPEis a muscular set of some of Bauhaus' best tracks. Incidentally, these tracks were recorded on the same tour that was filmed for the band's on-screen performance of "Bela Lugosi's Dead" in the 1983 film, THE HUNGER. PRESS THE EJECT features a striking version of John Cale's "Rosegarden Funeral Of Sores," a particularly spooky run-through of "Hollow Hills" that out-creeps the studio version on MASK, and the punk rock fuzz-out of "Dark Entries." Of course, "Belaa" appears here as well, in a luxurious nine-and-a-half-minute version. Washed in feedback and ever-so-subtly accelerating and decelerating, this song is the true center of "Goth" mythology. The disc is filled out with live tracks from the band's singles-the best of which is a blistering performance of "Double Dare"-and an unreleased live version of MASK's "Of Lillies And Remains." The last track, a cover of the Velvet Underground classic "Waiting For The Man," features sometime V.U. member Nico on vocals. Some live albums are not worth the energy required to listen to them. PRESS THE EJECT is not one of those albums. SKU: 1008520

Songs For Drella
Lou Reed and John Cale originally performed this tribute to Andy Warhol at The Brooklyn Academy Of Music. Personnel: Lou Reed (vocals, guitar); John Cale (vocals, viola, keyboards). Engineers include: Jeremy Darby, Michael Rathe, Lou Reed, John Cale, Mike Scalcione. Recorded at Sigma Sound, New York, New York between December 1989 and January 1990. Andy Warhol may not have created the Velvet Underground as both he and some history books like to claim, but he certainly used his cache to put them on the map back in the days of peace and love, when the band's dark vision was a cultural anomaly. After his passing, the erstwhile Velvet think tank of Reed and Cale reconvened for the first time since WHITE LIGHT WHITEHEAT to write, perform and record SONGS FOR DRELLA, a conceptual suite of songs that paid tribute to the life and work of Warhol, the man for whom the term "pop art" was created. No other musicians were included here, as the focus was squarely on the pair's lyrics. Skeletal guitar and keyboard accompaniment proved to be enough for these tunes, which merged artsong with Reed and Cale's distinctive avant-rock style. While occasionally clunky, the songs are effectively moving, providing a fitting tribute to Warhol, a unique, unconventional artist (a tag also easily applied to SONGS FOR DRELLA's principals). Live On Maxwell Street 1964
The last track is an extended version of the interview that appeared on the original LP. Robert Nighthawk andhis Flames of Rhythm: Robert Nighthawk (vocals, slide guitar); Johnny Young (vocals, guitar); Carey Bell (vocals, harmonica); Robert Whiteshead (drums). Recorded live on the corner of 14th & Peoria, Chicago, Illinois in September 1964. Originally released on Rounder (2022). Includes liner notes by Peter Guralnick. Digitally remastered by Don Ososke & Norman Dayron. Blues archivist Norman Dayron recorded this set by Robert Nighthawk and his small ensemble in 1964. Three years later, Nighthawk died from heart failure, leaving these recordings to sit unreleased until 1980. This album was recorded live on a street corner in Chicago, and Nighthawk's playing and singing are still in peak form. This is made all the more riveting because of the energy of the crowd, which becomes more and more excited as the set moves along. Nighthawk is joined by rhythm guitarist Johnny Young and drummer Robert Whitehead throughout, and harmonica player Carey Bell on a few selections. LIVE ON MAXWELL STREET is a no-frills, no-nonsense, honest, and committed performance. This and BRICKS ON MY PILLOW, which captures some of Nighthawk's late-'40s and early-'50s studio recordings, are stunning introductions to this vital bluesman. SKU: 1046059

Clouds
Personnel includes: Joni Mitchell (vocals, acoustic guitar). Recorded at A&M Studios, Hollywood, California. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Mitchell's second album, like her first, focuses almost exclusively on her acoustic guitar and voice. Though the sound is similar to her debut recording, there's a lot of progression evident in the songwriting here. Mitchell comes across as the quintessential folk poet, highly literate, guardedly emotional, somewhat collegiate, but full of enough talent and idiosyncrasy to pull listeners into her web. "Both Sides Now," a beautiful low-key anthem of disillusionment from which the album's title is derived, became something of an anthem for the Woodstock set. Other, less well-known tunes like "That Song About the Midway" and the mysterious-sounding "Roses Blue" make just as much of an impression. The joyous"Chelsea Morning" would eventually provide President Clinton with a name for his daughter (even if he did think Judy Collins wrote the song). SKU: 1006136

Harsh Light Of Day, The
Fastball: Tony Scalzo (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass); Miles Zuniga (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Joey Shuffield (drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: Brian Setzer (electric guitar); Michael Ward (slide guitar); Marty Rifkin (lap steel & pedal steel guitar); Charlie Bisharat, Phillip Levy (violin); Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick (cello); Phil Ayling (English horn); Kim Bullard (electric piano, organ, synthesized bass, keyboards); Billy Preston (organ); Reggie Burrell, Angelica Garcia (background vocals). Recorded at A&M Studios, Hollywood, California. The modern-day powertrio known as Fastball has progressed leaps and bounds from their succinct fuzz guitar power pop days. The Austin natives certainly haven't lost their knack for crafting great compositions, but so many more textures and elements enter the picture on THE HARSH LIGHT OF DAY. From the honky-tonk piano sound of "You're An Ocean" to the bittersweet contrasting vocal harmonies and vintage electric piano voice used on "Goodbye," it's clear that Fastball has matured and gathered the courage to release the album that they've always wanted to make. "Wind Me Up" sounds like an interpretive tribute to Elvis Costello, with a soundscape outro that might have you digging out your vinyl copy of SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND. Julian Raymond has stayed in the fold to produce THE HARSH LIGHT OF DAY while Miles Zuniga and Tony Scalzo continue their tradition of sharing lead vocal duties to great effect. SKU: 1075095

Rules Of Travel
Personnel: Rosanne Cash (vocals, guitar); Sheryl Crow, Johnny Cash, Steve Earle, Teddy Thompson (vocals); John Leventhal (guitar, Wurlitzer piano, keyboards, bass, percussion); Rick Depofi (tenor saxophone); Tony Kadler (flugelhorn); Larry Farrell (trombone); Doug Petty (organ); Zev Katz (bass, upright bass); Michael Rhodes (bass); Dennis McDermott, Shawn Pelton (drums, percussion); Matt Keeler (drums); Catherine Russell (background vocals). Recorded at 12th Street Studio, Sear Sound, and New York Noise, New York, New York; Cash Cabin Studio, Hendersonville, Tennessee; Nashville, Tennessee. Rosanne Cash started out at thevanguard of progressive country in the late '70s, but although you can't have deeper roots in country music than Johnny Cash's eldest child, she always had a broader vision in mind. Her definitive farewell to country came with 1993's THE WHEEL and she hasn't looked back since. Only one more album popped out in the 10 years between that career milestone and RULES OF TRAVEL, but it sounds like it was time well spent. With country ever further behind her, Cash goes down a deep, dark, introspective singer/songwriter path via dusky songs simmering with hurt, regret, and hard lessons learned. Cash's artful-but-not-pretentious lyrics are expertly framed by husband/producer/multi-instrumentalist John Leventhal, who plays the lion's share of the instruments and leads his wife toward a sonic state not dissimilar to that of his cohort Shawn Colvin (a crisp folk/rock/pop amalgam). Guest appearances by the likes of Steve Earle and Big Daddy Cash himself make for some variety, but it's Ms. Cash's trenchant, concise songwriting that's the star of this show. SKU: 1082286

Little Earthquakes
Personnel: Tori Amos (vocals, acoustic & electric pianos, keyboards); Jef Scott, Steve Caton (guitar, bass); John Chamberlin (mandolin); Eric Williams (ukulele, dulcimer); Will McGregor, Matthew Seligman (bass); Eric Rosse (drums, programming); Ed Green, Carlo Nuccio, Chris Hughes (drums); Paulinho DaCosta (percussion). Producers: Davitt Sigerson, Tori Amos, Eric Rosse, Ian Stanley. Engineers include: John Beverly Jones, Ian Stanley, Eric Rosse. With this debut, Tori Amos rose above the inevitable Kate Bush/Joni Mitchell comparisons, producing a stunning set of brutally honest and emotionally wrought songs. A skilled and imaginative pianist, Amos also proved a versatile vocalist, moving from whisper to scream in an instant. She concentrates on intimate stories of her religious upbringing, childhood traumas, and predominantly, sex, self-discovery and unhappy relationships. "Silent All These Years" was the first to hit a nerve with the public on single release, but all the tracks--memories of her father in "Winter," the bittersweet "Happy Phantom," the harrowing account of her own rape, "Me And A Gun"--combine to make this inspiring, if rarely comfortable, listening. Celebrity Skin
Hole: Courtney Love (vocals, guitar); Eric Erlandson (guitar); Melissa Auf Der Maur (bass); Patty Schemel (drums). Additional personnel: David Campbell, Craig Armstrong (strings); Michael Beinhorn, Paul DeCarli, Max Risenhoover, Chris Vrenna, Nick Franglen (programming). Principally recorded at Conway Studios, Los Angeles, California. CELEBRITY SKIN was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "Celebrity Skin" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or A Group With Vocal and Best Rock Song. "Malibu" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. After getting more press than O.J. Simpson, Courtney Love and Hole went underground to put together this quality, guitar-driven rock/pop release. CELEBRITY SKIN is packed from beginning to end with up-tempo, hard rock gems that show Love's strength and direction as a songwriter. Co-writing several tracks on CELEBRITY SKIN is Smashing Pumpkins front man Billy Corgan ("Malibu","Petals"). The title track is co-penned by Corgan with Love scripting the lyrics. Kicking into overdrive from the first chord, the song talks about the often-comical pursuit of fortune and fame. The lyrics on "Hit So Hard" make you wonder whether Love is talking about domestic abuse or the drop-dead feeling that results from spotting the most beautiful boy in the world across the room? The lyrics are smart enough to support both theories. Other tracks to check out are "Awful," "Reasons To Be Beautiful" and "Boys On The Radio." SKU: 1004673

Artist Of The Century, The
Personnel includes: Elvis Presley (vocals, guitar); The Jordanaires, The Sweet Inspirations (vocals); Scotty Moore, James Burton (guitar); Boots Randolph (saxophone); Floyd Cramer, Shorty Long (piano); Bill Black (bass); D.J. Fontana (drums); The Memphis Horns. Producers include: Sam Phillips, Felton Jarvis, Chips Moman. Compilation producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Sermon. Engineers include: Sam Phillips, Bob Ferris, Ernie Oehlrich. Recorded between 1954 and 1976. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Whatever one thinks of the title--Elvis Presley was indeed one of the artists who had an undeniable impact on the popular music of the 20th century--this 3-CD collection offers enough proof to support the claim. It's all here: his groundbreaking rockabilly sessions that influenced the Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and hundreds of others; all thehits from the '50s ("Jailhouse Rock," where the swagger and insolence in Elvis' voice still packs a wallop), to those from the '60s ("Stuck on You") and the '70s (a burning version of Chuck Berry's "Promised Land"). Pop ballads, blues, country, soul/R&B, rockers--virtually every song here is a gem. "I'll Hold You in My Heart," Bob Dylan's "Tomorrow Is a Long Time," and the wailing Holiday-blues "Santa Claus Is Back in Town" feature Elvis bearing his heart and soul, singing magnificently with barely restrained passion, in a style descended from the finest blues and R&B singers. This package also features well-written, detailed liner notes, along with quotes from fellow icons that serve as testimonials to Elvis' impact (the quoted include Richard Nixon, James Brown, John Lennon and Janis Joplin). If you must own only one Elvis Presley album, ARTIST OF THE CENTURY is the one. SKU: 5067564
