He spit high-powered rhymes that showcased his above-average skills on each song he recorded, including the ones where he held his own next to heavyweights like Jay-Z. On SAIL AWAY Newman returned to the lush orchestration of his debut album, but here the strings framed a more substantial collection of songs. SAIL AWAY opens with the now infamous title track, where Newman voices the pitch of a slave trader to his cargo of slaves over one of his most beautiful melodies. Elsewhere on the album, the targets of "Political Science," "Burn On" and "God's Song" may have been easy pickings for a satirist of Newman's stature, but the winning character sketches of "Simon Smith And His Dancing Bear" and "Dayton, Ohio - 1903" showcased a songwriter close tohis peak.

This wraps up FrankZappa's series of two-disc sets chronicling all manner of previously unreleased live recordings from throughout the entirety of his performing career (coming to a total of over twelve hours!). This time out there's actual thematic unity linking the entire proceedings. The theme? Sex, of course. From locker-room jokes to anti-censorship rants, it runs the entire spectrum. "Make A Sex Noise" and "Tracy Is A Snob" even feature some of the female citizens of, respectively, Binghamton, New York and Salt Lake City, Utah, voluntarily coming up on stage and making--you guessed it--sex noises to the accompaniment of the band. If there's a subtext here, it's the joyful coming together of these bands and their audiences. These are performances full of grit and edgy breathlessness as only live-on-stage can be.

Among Zappa's grittier works, ZOOT ALLURES is a strong piece of mid-'70s work that focuses more on the interaction of Zappa and a small group that includes Terry Bozzio, Ruth Underwood and Roy Estrada, temporarily abandoning the jazzy, large-scale efforts of previous albums like ONE SIZE FITS ALL. It's a bit of a mixed bag, but all the disparate ingredients for a satisfying whole. There are simple, catchy rock tunes like "Wind Up Workin' in a Gas Station," "Ms. Pinky," a synth-led ode to a sexual toy, and "Disco Boy," which foreshadowed Zappa's hit "Dancing Fool." The lovely instrumental "Black Napkins" is among the prettiest compositions in Zappa's canon, highlighting his guitar work in an uncharacteristically restrained mode. The arguable centerpiece of the album is the epic-length "The Torture Never Stops." Sung by Zappa in his deepest, dirtiest, most ominous voice, the song recounts the tale of an evil monarch who does unspeakable things in the depths of his castle. Full of Zappa's bluesy guitar interjections, its one of the most deliciously unsavory things FZ ever committed to tape.

Shortly after his 41st birthday, Elton John (a.k.a. Reg Dwight), released REG STRIKES BACK. At this particular juncture in life, the decision was made to auction off all costumes and props collected and worn at shows over the years. Using the layout of these items as an album cover, the contents within proved to be EJ's most successful album of the late '80s. Driven by the elegantly wrought "A Word In Spanish" and the pounding piano of "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That," REG found Elton John sounding no worse for wear, surrounded by an assortment of guests.

The percussion nicely anchors things, and McLachlan's voice soars over the proceedings. The track list includes fan favorites like the crossover hit "Building a Mystery," the Grammy-nominated "Aida," an insistent "Sweet Surrender" that exploits McLachlan's range to good effect, and the last track, a heartfelt version of the piano-driven "Angel," originally from the SURFACING album. MIRRORBALL, while unlikely towin her new fans, is a great document for McLachlan's legions of admirers.

Billy Joel recorded this live set at New York's Madison Square Garden, in front of 20,000 of his closest personal friends, on December 31, 1999. The recording has an obvious party atmosphere, but it differs from earlier Joel live efforts in that, apparently stung by criticism that he had at last become the MOR balladeer his detractors had claimed he'd always been anyway, he puts the guitars into overdrive. Even ballads like "New York State of Mind" get what is essentially a garage band treatment. As if to prove the point further, Joel also includes surprisingly idiomatic covers of the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Women" and Sly Stone's "Dance to theMusic," both of which hark back to the music he was making in Long Island bars in the late '60s with his first band the Hassles.

Predominantly featuring artists that you might find in the CD collection of a typical American teen, the SMALLVILLE soundtrack uses the series' premise as its guide--that of a young Clark Kent growing up in this fictional town and learning to live with his powers prior to making the life-changing decision to don tights and fight for truth, justice and the American way. So it's no surprise that Five For Fighting's hit "Superman" is thecenterpiece of this collection. Or that the genteel Sixpence None the Richer delivers an airy reading of "Don't Dream It's Over" that doesn't stray too far from the Crowded House original and serves as a perfect bookend to the late Eva Cassidy's delicate cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time."
Otherwise, hook-filled alt-rock is the soundtrack's template, including everything from the Flaming Lips' psychedelic jangle-fest "Fight Test" to Phantom Planet's joyous hook-repository "Lonely Day," and Weezer's equally infectious "Island in The Sun." Also joining in the fun are Remy Zero with the urgent "Save Me" and Ryan Adams with the lush "Nuclear." While not an antidote to kryptonite, SMALLVILLE does serve as a remedy to shoddy, thrown-together soundtracks.

Former Magazine bassist Adamson has reinvented himself as a hip new type of celluloid hero. Any resemblance between the progressive, post-punk jingoism of his previous band is, at best, coincidental. The truth is that you'd hardly recognize him. Yet Adamson's reincarnation as a rock-imbibed Morricone has already produced an impressive, full-bodied catalog of sounds and ideas.
THE NEGRO INSIDE ME, the latest "soundtrack" from the urban jungle ofAdamson's mind, bristles with urgent dance rhythms, bleating aural sirens, and Raymond Chandler-esque tech-noir melodies. "Busted" is a seething combination of the best elements of "Peter Gunn," "Secret Agent Man," and the James Bond themes, disassembled and re-energized into an irresistibly magnetic opulence. While there are certainly many musicians out there involved in creating soundtracks to films from the id, Adamson prefers to blend random fragments from the vast oeuvre of movie music--snippets of traditional piano licks, skittering stabs of jazzy percussion--with the more brazen sensibilities of his new-wave roots. Taking a cue from other art-rock groups like Yes and Genesis, Rush expressed a penchant for fantasy and science fiction themes on A FAREWELL TO KINGS. Coupling the increasingly intricate arrangements of Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson with the creative lyrics of Neil Peart, the power trio format is stretched beyondrecognition on epic tracks like the sensational "Xanadu," a masterful re-telling of Kubla Kahn's "Pleasure Dome" along the river Alph.
KINGS also introduced a more lyrical side of the group with "Closer To The Heart," a work of sheer beauty that would become a concert mainstay. The lesser-known rocker "Cinderella Man" and the graceful "Madrigal" offer creative tangents that explore the mysteries of the human psyche and emotions. The grand finale is a work of magnificent complexity and fantasy known as "Cygnus X-1." This multi-part suite introduces an unnamed space traveler who descends into a mysterious black hole in his rocket ship, the "Rocinante," to an uncertain end. The character would later emerge to star in the group's follow-up album, HEMISPHERES.

In the UK, where both electronica and brash guitar rock are bigger chart-toppers than in the US, artists are a lot freer about mixing the two styles. Hence UNKLE, the project of James Lavelle and illbient hero DJ Shadow.The duo puts their sampling/looping expertise to work in the service of a project that blends the best of Britrock and electronica, without sacrificing the integrity of either style. Before Cure founder Robert Smith drew up his archetype for eccentric pop and a fresh sense of lament that turned his band into an arena act in the USA, the Cure's leanings were more darkly felt. PORNOGRAPHY, a beautifully still and deep record, is a room full of shadows. Ambient in part, and occasionally challenging, its vision, even down to the oddly distorted photo on the cover, was one darkly wrapped. Smith's yelp of a vocal rose and fell in and out of the light, while "The Hanging Garden" hinted at his as yet untapped, but clearly commercial, bent.

Nick Drake's debut album encapsulates a marriage between folk music and the singer-songwriter genre. Part Donovan, part Jim Webb, he articulated an aching romanticism at a time when progressive rock ran rampant. Beautiful melodies and fragrant accompaniment, in particular Robert Kirby's stunning string arrangements, enhance the artist's sense oflonging in which warm, but understated, vocals accentuate the album's passive mystery. An aura of existential cool envelops the proceedings, accentuated by Danny Thompson's sonorous bass lines and Drake's poetic imagery. The result is a shimmering, autumnal collection, reflective but never morbid. It's a tragedy that Drake never lived to see how his stature has grown.
