Kiss Tha Game Goodbye
Personnel includes: Jadakiss, Snoop Dogg, Eve, DMX, Nas, Nate Dogg, Carl Thomas, Styles, Sheek, Drag-On, Cross, Infra-Red, Fiend, Ann Nesby, Eightball, Yung Wun, Parle, E. McCaine, O.D., Rita, Mashonda. Chep, Gap. Producers include: Mahog, Jay "Icepick" Jackson, The Neptunes, Swizz Beatz, Alchemist. Engineers include: Chris Theis, Michael "Wolf" Reaves, Scott Kieklak. As the most clever lyricist in Ruff Ryders infamous trio The Lox, Jadakiss quickly became the group's star. He spit high-powered rhymes that showcased his above-average skills on each song he recorded, including the ones where he held his own next to heavyweights like Jay-Z. Jada debuts his solo career with the highly anticipated KISS THE GAME GOODBYE. Featuring production by the Neptunes, Timbaland, Swizz Beatz, DJ Premier, and others, Kiss Tha Game Goodbye is as good as hip-hop is going to get. As usual, 'Kiss boasts impressively throughout. But his choice of words makes for some veryinteresting showboating. He proves his diversity with crossover cuts like "Knock Yourself Out," and pleases his original fanbase with sure winners like "We Gon' Make It." Some may have doubted that Jadakiss could do it without the Lox, but after one listen, those naysayers will believe. SKU: 1064335

Ill Communication
The Beastie Boys: Mike "Ad-Rock" Horovitz (vocals, guitar); Adam "MCA" Yauch (vocals, acoustic bass, electric bass); Mike "Mike D" Diamond (vocals, drums). Additional personnel: Q-Tip, Biz Markie (rap vocals); Eugene Gore (violin); "Money" Mark Nishita (keyboards, organ); Amery Smith (drums); Eric Bobo (percussion). Producer: Beastie Boys, Mario Caldato, Jr. Recorded at G-Son Studios, Atwater Village, California and Tin Pan Alley, New York. "Sabotage" was nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards. First time around they were written off as more of Presley's snot-nosed ancestors, shamelessly appropriating breaking black musical styles. Then, after creating an undisputable hip-hop masterpiece (1989's PAUL'S BOUTIQUE), they were tossed aside because they'd seemingly lost their commercial value. But now, having successfully made their "new style" over and debut it at Number 1, the only thing the Beastie Boys can be dissed about is their media over-exposure. The phattening pleasures of ILL COMMUNICATION's 20 tracks come when they visit the old school--whether with DJ Hurricane on the wheels of steel in "Sure Shot," or freestyling classic Beastie rhymes with Q-Tip on "Get It Together." Or when they turn that classroom on its ear byreplacing the samples and machine-beats with live jams. And it's not just their musical skills which have progressed over the years. On ILL COMMUNICATION, the lyrical jokesters who've previously added figures as diverse as Japanese baseball legend Sadahura Oh and prominent science dude Galileo Galilei to hip-hop's lyrical canon, finally allow their individualism to shine brightly through the usual veil of Beastie-speak. By casually expounding on an undercurrent of values ranging from Buddhism, to corporate slackdom, to (of all things) marriage, ILL COMMUNICATION goes further to define the parameters of a twentysomething community than any other commercially successful record in recent memory. Sail Away (Remastered & Expanded)
Personnel: Randy Newman (vocals, piano); Ry Cooder, Russ Titleman (guitar); Abe Most (alto saxophone); Chris Ethridge, Wilton Felder, Jimmy Bond (bass); Jim Keltner, Gene Parsons, Earl Palmer (drums); Milt Holland (percussion). Producers: Lenny Waronker, Russ Titelman. Reissue producers: Steve Woolard, David McLees. Engineers include: Lee Herschberg, Bruce Botnick, Bob Kovach. Recorded at Amigo Studios, Western Studios and Poppi Studios, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by David Wild. All tracks have been digitally remastered. On SAIL AWAY Newman returned to the lush orchestration of his debut album, but here the strings framed a more substantial collection of songs. SAIL AWAY opens with the now infamous title track, where Newman voices the pitch of a slave trader to his cargo of slaves over one of his most beautiful melodies. Elsewhere on the album, the targets of "Political Science," "Burn On" and "God's Song" may have been easy pickings for a satirist of Newman's stature, but the winning character sketches of "Simon Smith And His Dancing Bear" and "Dayton, Ohio - 1903" showcased a songwriter close tohis peak. You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol.6
Full title: You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore, Vol. 6. Personnel includes: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Mark Volman, Howard Kaylan (vocals); Steve Vai, Adrian Belew (guitar); Ike Willis, Jean Luc-Ponty (violin); Arthur Barrow, Patrick O'Hearn (bass); Terry Bozzio (drums). Disc 1 was recorded from 1970-1988 and is dedicated to songs dealing with the topic of sex. It contains nine new tracks. Disc 2 documents several of Zappa's notorious Halloween concerts and contains five previously unreleased tracks. This wraps up FrankZappa's series of two-disc sets chronicling all manner of previously unreleased live recordings from throughout the entirety of his performing career (coming to a total of over twelve hours!). This time out there's actual thematic unity linking the entire proceedings. The theme? Sex, of course. From locker-room jokes to anti-censorship rants, it runs the entire spectrum. "Make A Sex Noise" and "Tracy Is A Snob" even feature some of the female citizens of, respectively, Binghamton, New York and Salt Lake City, Utah, voluntarily coming up on stage and making--you guessed it--sex noises to the accompaniment of the band. If there's a subtext here, it's the joyful coming together of these bands and their audiences. These are performances full of grit and edgy breathlessness as only live-on-stage can be. SKU: 1008417

Zoot Allures
Personnel: Frank Zappa (guitar, bass, keyboards, synthesizers, vocals); Davey Moire (vocals); Napoleon Murphy Brown (vocals, saxophone); Lu Ann Neil (harp); Don "Captain Beefheart" Van Vliet (harmonica); Andre Lewis (organ, vocals); Roy Estrada (bass, vocals); Dave Parlato (bass); Ruth Underwood (marimba, synthesizers); Terry Bozzio (drums, vocals); Sharkie Barker, Ruben Ladron de Guevera (background vocals). Digitally remastered byBob Stone (1989). Among Zappa's grittier works, ZOOT ALLURES is a strong piece of mid-'70s work that focuses more on the interaction of Zappa and a small group that includes Terry Bozzio, Ruth Underwood and Roy Estrada, temporarily abandoning the jazzy, large-scale efforts of previous albums like ONE SIZE FITS ALL. It's a bit of a mixed bag, but all the disparate ingredients for a satisfying whole. There are simple, catchy rock tunes like "Wind Up Workin' in a Gas Station," "Ms. Pinky," a synth-led ode to a sexual toy, and "Disco Boy," which foreshadowed Zappa's hit "Dancing Fool." The lovely instrumental "Black Napkins" is among the prettiest compositions in Zappa's canon, highlighting his guitar work in an uncharacteristically restrained mode. The arguable centerpiece of the album is the epic-length "The Torture Never Stops." Sung by Zappa in his deepest, dirtiest, most ominous voice, the song recounts the tale of an evil monarch who does unspeakable things in the depths of his castle. Full of Zappa's bluesy guitar interjections, its one of the most deliciously unsavory things FZ ever committed to tape. SKU: 1008225

Reg Strikes Back [Remastered]
Personnel: Elton John (vocals, keyboards); Pete Townshend, Davey Johnstone (guitar); Freddie Hubbard (trumpet, flugelhorn); Fred Mandel (synthesizer); David Paton (bass); Charlie Morgan (drums); Ray Cooper (percussion); Adrian Baker, Bruce Johnston, Carl Wilson (background vocals). Recorded at Air Studios, London, England. Digitally remastered by Gus Dudgeon. Shortly after his 41st birthday, Elton John (a.k.a. Reg Dwight), released REG STRIKES BACK. At this particular juncture in life, the decision was made to auction off all costumes and props collected and worn at shows over the years. Using the layout of these items as an album cover, the contents within proved to be EJ's most successful album of the late '80s. Driven by the elegantly wrought "A Word In Spanish" and the pounding piano of "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That," REG found Elton John sounding no worse for wear, surrounded by an assortment of guests. Along with old stalwarts Davey Johnstone, Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson, guests included Pete Townshend on "Town Of Plenty," jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard on "Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters (Part Two)" and Beach Boys Bruce Johnston and Carl Wilson, providing harmonies for "Since God Invented Girls." Aftera brief health scare resulting in surgery to remove nodules from his vocal chords, REG STRIKES BACK marked Elton John's robust return to good health and great music-making. SKU: 1014807

Mirrorball (Greatest Hits Live) [ECD]
This is an enhanced audio CD which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: Sarah McLachlan (vocals, guitar, piano); Sean Ashby, David Sinclair (vocals, guitar); Vince Jones (vocals, keyboards); Ashwin Sood (vocals, drums, percussion); Brian Minato (bass). MIRRORBALL was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album. "I Will Remember You" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. "Possession" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Though not marketed overtly as a live album, MIRRORBALL sports periodic crowd noises along with an astonishingly clean sound. It also explores aspects of the Sarah McLachlan phenomenon--the frank, confessional singer/songwriter style of music that has made her so popular and the excess of commercialism that irritates her detractors to no end. Regarding the latter, the disc contains a CD-ROM catalogue that contains order forms for everything from CDs and videos to temporary tattoos and gift certificates for Sarah merchandise, in addition to the usual web links. The performances on MIRRORBALL are dynamic and inspired, especially in the guitar work of David Sinclair and Sean Ashby. The percussion nicely anchors things, and McLachlan's voice soars over the proceedings. The track list includes fan favorites like the crossover hit "Building a Mystery," the Grammy-nominated "Aida," an insistent "Sweet Surrender" that exploits McLachlan's range to good effect, and the last track, a heartfelt version of the piano-driven "Angel," originally from the SURFACING album. MIRRORBALL, while unlikely towin her new fans, is a great document for McLachlan's legions of admirers. SKU: 1015619

Wave Of Mutilation (Best Of Pixies)
Pixies: Black Francis (vocals, guitar); KimDeal (vocals, bass); Joey Santiago (guitar); David Lovering (drums). Additional personnel includes: Eric Drew Feldman (keyboards, synthesizer). Producers: Gary Smith, Steve Albini, Gil Norton, Pixies. Recorded between 1987 & 1991. One of the most revered college-radio bands of the late 1980s and early '90s, Pixies combined smart yet surreal pop with jagged, punk-influenced rock and, oddly enough, broke up just as the alternative music scene went mainstream. Fueled by Black Francis's oft-maniacal vocals and bizarrely catchy songs, the Boston-based quartet--rounded out by bassist/vocalist Kim Deal, guitarist Joey Santiago, and drummer David Lovering--consistently crafted fascinating albums during their brief but headstrong run. This 23-track collection, released in tandem with their highly anticipated 2004 reunion tour, captures many of their finest moments. Proceeding semi-chronologically, WAVE OF MUTILATION begins with the rambunctious ditty "Bone Machine." Other early gems include the strange anthem "Holiday Song," the anthropomorphic ode "Caribou," and Deal's signature song, "Gigantic." The band's beloved 1989 album, DOOLITTLE, is amply represented by seven songs, including the pleading "Hey," the mischievous "Monkey Gone to Heaven," the fierce "Debaser," and the pop-perfect "Here Comes Your Man." Latter-day tunes include rockers such as "Dig for Fire," "Alec Eiffel," and "Planet of Sound," along with two B-sides, "Into the White" and an excellent cover of Neil Young's "Winterlong." If you're looking for the Pixies motherlode, this is it. SKU: 6554594

2000 Years - The Millennium Concert
Full title: 2000 Years: The Millennium Concert. Personnel: Billy Joel (vocals, keyboards); Mark Rivera (vocals, guitar, flute, saxophone, keyboards); Crystal Taliefero (vocals, guitar, saxophone, percussion); Tommy Byrnes (vocals, guitar); David Rosenthal (vocals, keyboards); Ritchie Cannata (saxophone); Barry Danielan (trumpet); Ozzie Melendez (trombone); David Santos (bass); Liberty Devito (drums); Michael Mellett, Melodie Crittenden, Kim Keyes, Marlon Saunders, Curtis King Jr., Biti Strauchn, Arif St. Michael (background vocals). Recorded live at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York, December 31, 1999. Billy Joel recorded this live set at New York's Madison Square Garden, in front of 20,000 of his closest personal friends, on December 31, 1999. The recording has an obvious party atmosphere, but it differs from earlier Joel live efforts in that, apparently stung by criticism that he had at last become the MOR balladeer his detractors had claimed he'd always been anyway, he puts the guitars into overdrive. Even ballads like "New York State of Mind" get what is essentially a garage band treatment. As if to prove the point further, Joel also includes surprisingly idiomatic covers of the Rolling Stones' "Honky Tonk Women" and Sly Stone's "Dance to theMusic," both of which hark back to the music he was making in Long Island bars in the late '60s with his first band the Hassles. Smallville (Music From The Talon) [ECD]
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Predominantly featuring artists that you might find in the CD collection of a typical American teen, the SMALLVILLE soundtrack uses the series' premise as its guide--that of a young Clark Kent growing up in this fictional town and learning to live with his powers prior to making the life-changing decision to don tights and fight for truth, justice and the American way. So it's no surprise that Five For Fighting's hit "Superman" is thecenterpiece of this collection. Or that the genteel Sixpence None the Richer delivers an airy reading of "Don't Dream It's Over" that doesn't stray too far from the Crowded House original and serves as a perfect bookend to the late Eva Cassidy's delicate cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." Otherwise, hook-filled alt-rock is the soundtrack's template, including everything from the Flaming Lips' psychedelic jangle-fest "Fight Test" to Phantom Planet's joyous hook-repository "Lonely Day," and Weezer's equally infectious "Island in The Sun." Also joining in the fun are Remy Zero with the urgent "Save Me" and Ryan Adams with the lush "Nuclear." While not an antidote to kryptonite, SMALLVILLE does serve as a remedy to shoddy, thrown-together soundtracks. SKU: 1080764

Negro Inside Me, The
Personnel includes: Barry Adamson (various instruments); Louise Ness (vocals); Kenlow (guitar); Joe Sax (saxophone); Seamus Beaghen (guitar, piano, Hammond organ); Ivor Guest, Atticus Ross (programming). Engineers: Kevin Petrie, John Hudson. Recorded at E-zoo Studios and Mayfair Studios, London, England. Former Magazine bassist Adamson has reinvented himself as a hip new type of celluloid hero. Any resemblance between the progressive, post-punk jingoism of his previous band is, at best, coincidental. The truth is that you'd hardly recognize him. Yet Adamson's reincarnation as a rock-imbibed Morricone has already produced an impressive, full-bodied catalog of sounds and ideas. THE NEGRO INSIDE ME, the latest "soundtrack" from the urban jungle ofAdamson's mind, bristles with urgent dance rhythms, bleating aural sirens, and Raymond Chandler-esque tech-noir melodies. "Busted" is a seething combination of the best elements of "Peter Gunn," "Secret Agent Man," and the James Bond themes, disassembled and re-energized into an irresistibly magnetic opulence. While there are certainly many musicians out there involved in creating soundtracks to films from the id, Adamson prefers to blend random fragments from the vast oeuvre of movie music--snippets of traditional piano licks, skittering stabs of jazzy percussion--with the more brazen sensibilities of his new-wave roots. Can you say "fusion noir?" SKU: 1011758

Farewell To Kings, A
Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, keyboards, bass); Alex Lifeson (guitar); Neil Peart (drums, percussion). Recorded at Rockfield Studios, Wales in June 1977. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Taking a cue from other art-rock groups like Yes and Genesis, Rush expressed a penchant for fantasy and science fiction themes on A FAREWELL TO KINGS. Coupling the increasingly intricate arrangements of Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson with the creative lyrics of Neil Peart, the power trio format is stretched beyondrecognition on epic tracks like the sensational "Xanadu," a masterful re-telling of Kubla Kahn's "Pleasure Dome" along the river Alph. KINGS also introduced a more lyrical side of the group with "Closer To The Heart," a work of sheer beauty that would become a concert mainstay. The lesser-known rocker "Cinderella Man" and the graceful "Madrigal" offer creative tangents that explore the mysteries of the human psyche and emotions. The grand finale is a work of magnificent complexity and fantasy known as "Cygnus X-1." This multi-part suite introduces an unnamed space traveler who descends into a mysterious black hole in his rocket ship, the "Rocinante," to an uncertain end. The character would later emerge to star in the group's follow-up album, HEMISPHERES. SKU: 1008447

Psyence Fiction
Unkle: DJ Shadow, James Lavelle. Additional personnel: Thom Yorke, Mike D., Jason Newsted, Richard Ashcroft. In the UK, where both electronica and brash guitar rock are bigger chart-toppers than in the US, artists are a lot freer about mixing the two styles. Hence UNKLE, the project of James Lavelle and illbient hero DJ Shadow. The duo puts their sampling/looping expertise to work in the service of a project that blends the best of Britrock and electronica, without sacrificing the integrity of either style. Towards this end, they're assisted by some talented friends. Radiohead singer Thom Yorke cowrote and sings "Rabbit In Your Headlights," which takes his band's sound and runs a little further afield. The Verve's Richard Ashcroft is on hand for "Lonely Soul," which links syncopated drum loops, midtempo rock and extended orchestral sections. PSYENCE FICTION is a fresh-sounding effort that pushes the boundaries of both rock and electronica in a way that will appeal to fans of both genres. SKU: 5072216

Pornography
The Cure: Robert Smith (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Simon Gallup (keyboards, bass); Laurence Tolhurst (keyboards, drums). Engineers: Phil Thornally, Mike Nocito, Robert Smith. Recorded at Rak Studio One, London,England. Before Cure founder Robert Smith drew up his archetype for eccentric pop and a fresh sense of lament that turned his band into an arena act in the USA, the Cure's leanings were more darkly felt. PORNOGRAPHY, a beautifully still and deep record, is a room full of shadows. Ambient in part, and occasionally challenging, its vision, even down to the oddly distorted photo on the cover, was one darkly wrapped. Smith's yelp of a vocal rose and fell in and out of the light, while "The Hanging Garden" hinted at his as yet untapped, but clearly commercial, bent. SKU: 1019740

Five Leaves Left
Personnel: Nick Drake (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano); Richard Thompson (electric guitar); Clare Lowther (cello); Paul Harris (piano); Tristan Fry (vibraphone, drums); Danny Thompson (bass); Rocki Dzidzornu (congas). Nick Drake's debut album encapsulates a marriage between folk music and the singer-songwriter genre. Part Donovan, part Jim Webb, he articulated an aching romanticism at a time when progressive rock ran rampant. Beautiful melodies and fragrant accompaniment, in particular Robert Kirby's stunning string arrangements, enhance the artist's sense oflonging in which warm, but understated, vocals accentuate the album's passive mystery. An aura of existential cool envelops the proceedings, accentuated by Danny Thompson's sonorous bass lines and Drake's poetic imagery. The result is a shimmering, autumnal collection, reflective but never morbid. It's a tragedy that Drake never lived to see how his stature has grown. SKU: 1077798
