Mutter
Rammstein: Christoph Schneider, Christian Lorenz, Richard Z. Kruspe-Bernstein, Till Lindemann, Paul Lander, Oliver Riedel. Additional personnel includes: Khira Li (spoken vocals); Gunter Joseck (condutor); Film Orchestra Babelsberg (strings); Florian Ammon (programming); Bobo (background vocals). Engineers include: Ulf Kruckenberg, Michael Schubert. Recorded at Miraval, France; Galaxy, Belgium; Nukleus, Saal 1 Studios,Berlin, Germany. Where Germany's Rammstein explored a sinister, electronic-oriented sound in their previous work, MUTTER finds the doyens of doom turning more "organic," if no less ominous. In place of techno beats and synthesizers, this album offers crunching electric guitars and pounding drums, offset by operatic backing vocals and orchestral washes. The whole affair is awash with an almost Wagnerian sense of grandeur and an undeniable darkness. The unsettling aspects of MUTTER are underscored by Rammstein's vocals, which highlight the most guttural aspects of the German language, and the gloomy industrial-rock feel that pervades the album. It's clearly the band's intention to disturb, an agenda achieved with flying colors on this album, which looms large with barely suppressed rage and other ugly emotions rising to the sonic surface. Diamond Life [Remastered]
Minidisc available on Epic (39581). NOTES: Also available as a 3-pack with PROMISE and LOVE DELUXE. Sade: Sade Adu (vocals); Stuart Matthewman (guitar, saxophone); Andrew Hale (keyboards); Paul S. Denman (bass). Additional personnel: Terry Bailey, Gordon Matthewman (trumpet); Dave Early (drums, percussion); Paul Cooke (drums); Martin Ditcham (percussion). Digitally remastered by Tom Coyne (Sterling Sound, New York, New York). Sade crept up on the music market when they were least expecting it. The surprise hit 'Your Love Is King' was a very mature record for the singles market and one that opened the door to smooth soul-based pop. This album proved that she was no fluke and it became one of the most acclaimed debuts of all time. Sade rode out the publicity and coped with everything; for once the music did the talking. 'Smooth Operator' put her back in the pop charts but it was the overall class and confidence of the whole album that makes it so darn good. Her reading ofTimmy Thomas's 'Why Can't We Live Together' is a highlight. SKU: 1046715

Sparkle In The Rain [Remastered]
Simple Minds: Derek Forbes (vocals, bass); Mel Gaynor (vocals, drums); Jim Kerr (vocals); Charles Burchill (acoustic & electric guitars); Michael MacNeil (keyboards). Additional personnel: Kirsty MacColl (spoken vocals). All tracks have been digitally remastered. 1984's SPARKLE INTHE RAIN is both Simple Minds' US breakthrough album and the pinnacle of their career. Less than a year after this album was released, the group scored their first major hit with the Breakfast Club movie theme "Don't You (Forget About Me)." The singles from this album, the dizzying "Up on the Catwalk" and the gospel-infused "Waterfront," were major college radio hits. These two songs, along with the manic, slashing "The Kick Inside of Me," are the most emotional and heartfelt, and least distant and affected music Jim Kerr and company ever created. The album isn't perfect--no one should ever attempt to cover Lou Reed's "Street Hassle"--but then, none of their earlier albums are, either. SKU: 1078931

Wave [Remastered]
The Patti Smith Group: Patti Smith, LennyKaye, Ivan Kral, Jay Dee Daugherty, Richard Sohl. Additional personnel: R.E.F.M. (piano); Todd Rundgren (bass); Andi Ostrowe (timpani); DNV (sound effects). Producers: Todd Rundgren, Thom Panunzio, Patti Smith Group. Principally recorded at Bearsville, Saugerties, New York. Originally released on Arista (8546). With the success of the hit 1978 album EASTER and its single, "Because the Night," most fans assumed that The Patti Smith Group would continue their successful streak for years to come. Before sessions began for the follow-up to EASTER, Patti Smith met ex-MC5 guitarist Fred 'Sonic' Smith--the pair quickly fell in love and eventually married. Soon after, Smith decided that she wanted to retire from the music biz altogether to start a family, but agreed to record one last album, 79's WAVE. Produced by pop master Todd Rundgren, the album was more abstract than its predecessor, but another strong set of tunes were featured. The album-opening pop rocker, "Frederick," is a tribute to Patti's new love, while a pair of songs would receive greater exposure when covered by other bands--"Dancing Barefoot" (later performed by U2) and the bonus track "Fire of Unknown Origin" (covered by Blue Oyster Cult). Also featured was an uptempo rendition of The Byrd's "So You Want To Be (A Rock N' Roll Star)," "Citizen Ship," and the title track. Although Patti Smith would later come out of retirement, WAVE was the last album to include the complete, original Patti Smith Group. SKU: 1006266

Turning Point, The [Remastered]
Personnel: John Mayall (vocals, electric & slide guitars, harmonica, tambourine, percussion); Jon Mark (acoustic guitar); Johnny Almond (flute, alto & tenor saxophones); Steve Thompson (bass). Producer: John Mayall. Reissue producer: Bill Levenson. Recorded at the Bill Graham's Fillmore East in New York, New York on July 12, 1969. Includes liner notes by Chris Welch, John Mayall, John McDermott. Digitally remastered by Suha Gur (Universal Mastering Studios East). Singer/harmonica player/guitarist John Mayall was best known as a key figure in the '60s British blues boom, fronting a band containing future members of Cream, Fleetwood Mac, and Colosseum among others. However, after releasing a number of rock-edged electric blues albums, Mayall changed direction in 1969. Recorded live a New York's Fillmore East, THE TURNING POINT finds Mayall fronting an all-acoustic four-piece including guitarist Jon Mark and sax playerJohnny Almond, who would later gain renown as the progressive rock outfit Mark-Almond. With the new format allowing for a greater degree of subtlety, Mayall offers a blend of blues, folk, and jazz, seamlessly mixed into a new paradigm. Lest you forget that this was 1969, things open up with the pro-pot anthem "The Laws Must Change." The centerpiece of the album, and a Mayall concert staple thereafter, is "Room to Move," a breathless, frenetic number where Mayall shows off his harp chops and gets the audience worked up as only a real blues man can. Suite For Susan Moore And Damion - We Are One.one, All In One/Bird on a wire
2 LPs on 1 CD: SUITE FOR SUSAN MOORE (1969)/BIRD ON A WIRE (1970). In terms of commercial success, Tim Hardin's career trajectory was a steep downward slope. Following the classic songwriting and gentle folk-pop of his first two albums, his late-'60s output took an experimental direction with little regard for widespread appeal. The 1969 concept album SUITE FOR SUSAN MOORE AND DAMIAN is a rambling yet compelling paean to Hardin's wife and son. Haunting, sparsely decorated songs share space with spoken word interludes in this exploration into the darker side of love. Hardin's fragile vocals border on free-form jazz, echoing Tim Buckley or even Van Morrison during "Last Sweet Moment." After the fractured introspection of itspredecessor, Hardin's next album returned to more traditional song structures. The inclusion of several cover versions makes this a more rounded work, infused with a mood of redemption. Hardin's voice teeters on the brink of heartbreak throughout. There's a startling array of styles, including gospel, jazz, country, and folk. Ultimately, Hardin's decision to follow his artistic muse meant that these albums slid quietly into obscurity, but aficionados continue to rate them highly. SKU: 6424082

Polyglot
Volapuk: Guigou Chenevier (vocals, sanza, keyboards, marimba, drums); Takumi Fukushima (vocals, violin); Guillaume Saurel (cello, flute); Michel Mandel (clarinet, taragot). This is the third album by the hard-to-classify European instrumental ensemble Volapuk. The trio of drummer Guigou Chenevier, clarinetist Michel Mandel, and cellist Guillaume Saurelis here joined by violinist Takumi Fukushima. In addition, each of the three core members play other instruments (flute, marimba, sanza, and taragot) as well as singing here and there. The trio collaboratively wrote most of the 13 selections. The music mixes Eastern European melodic traditions, cabaret and chamber music sensibilities, small combo jazz, and even a bit of progressive rock. The tunes are rich with character and never much more than three minutes in length. While iconoclastic in its refusal to adhere to any particular existing boundaries, this is very friendly music. Volapuk make excellent ambassadors for the avant-garde. SKU: 1050948

Brian Blade Fellowship: Brian Blade (vocals, acoustic guitar, drums); Melvin Butler (soprano & tenor saxophones); Myron Walden (alto saxophone, bass clarinet); John Cowherd (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, pump organ); Kurt Rosenwinkel (acoustic & electric guitars); Dave Easley (pedal steel guitar); Chris Thomas (acoustic bass). Additional personnel: Joni Mitchell (vocals); Daniel Lanois (electric & pedal steel guitars). Principally recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York in September 1999. Includes liner notes by Brian Blade. Drummer Brian Blade takes the path less traveled with his sophomore release PERCEPTUAL. Rather than following the more traditional routeswith which he has made his mark, Blade opts for a more ethereal, almost folk-like jazz style that incorporates everything from pop and country to avant-garde styles. It is evident that this is very personal music for Blade and his Fellowship; for the listener, it is a glimpse into the creative mind of one of the most mesmerizing percussionists in jazz. The guitar of Kurt Rosenwinkel and the pedal steel glissandos of Dave Easley blend uniquely with Myron Walden's gentle sax and clarinet tones throughout the set, and it is obvious that Blade is continuously striving to produce a particular mood for each piece. Feeding the ebb and flow of tracks like the moving "Reconciliation" or "Patron Saint of Girls," Blade steers the group like a ship's captain with his dynamic swells. Making special appearances are pop legend Joni Mitchell, who lends dusky vocals to "Steadfast," and Daniel Lanois, usually better-known for his production skills, who contributes some creative guitar work. Autumn Stone, The [Remastered]
Personnel: Steve Marriott (vocals, guitar); Ronnie Lane (guitar); Kenney Jones (drums); Ian McLagan (bass). The Small Faces' albums have been repackaged many times, and in greater number than their few original titles should allow. THE AUTUMN STONE, however, is a bracing collection of odds and ends, hits, and live tracks that was released in 1969, following the departure of founder and frontman Steve Marriott. The title track alone is worth the price of admission, of a piece with the Small Faces'previous album, OGDEN'S NUT GONE FLAKE. A few pieces are clearly unfinished ("Collibosher" is little more than an instrumental backing track), but even these show Marriott and Lane's songwriting prowess reaching new peaks. The five live numbers on THE AUTUMN STONE prove what England knew but America didn't discover until the band reemerged as The Faces--the Small Faces were a blistering performance outfit. They are a '60s band worth not only remembering but also celebrating. SKU: 1008202

Anthology
ANTHOLOGY contains tracks from all five of the Babys' albums, originally released between 1976 and 1980. The Babys: John Waite (vocals, bass); Jonathan Cain (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Michael Corby (guitar, keyboards); Wally Stocker (guitar); Ricky Phillips (bass); Tony Brock (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Kevin Kelly (piano); Jack Conrad (bass); Marti McCall, Diana Lee, Lisa Freeman Roberts, Pat Henderson, Myrna Mathews, Anne Marie Leclerc (background vocals). Producers: Ron Nevison, Brian Christian, Bob Ezrin, Keith Olson. Compilationproducer: Kevin Flaherty. Includes liner notes by Brad Elliot. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Evren Goknar (Capitol Mastering). This is an expanded version of the then-disintegrating group's 1981 greatest hits compilation. It should probably be listened to as an early clue to lead singer John Waite's new direction in his far more successful solo career; a few of the songs featured here could pass for embryonic versions of the likes of "Missing You." Not that The Babys music is without its own charms. The band seems to have aimed for a synthesis of the Raspberries and Cheap Trick, and while the resultant mix of power pop and arena rock doesn't always work, sometimes, notably on hits like "Isn't It Time" and "Every Time I Think of You," (both of which added touches of '60s pop soul to the mix) it works very well indeed. This new compilation includes cuts from all of the band's studio albums, plus two amusing covers--a thunderous version of Barrett Strong's "Money," and (surprisingly) the '50s teen chestnut "I Love How You Love Me." Renaissance
Personnel includes: Lionel Ritchie (vocals, Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards); Robyn Smith (conductor); Fred Jerkins III, Rodney Jerkins (various instruments); Paul Barry (acoustic guitar); Adam Phillips, Michael Landau (electric guitar); Paul Jackson Jr., Dean Parks, Jon Clark (guitar); L.M.O. Studio Orchestra (strings); "Snake" Davis (saxophne); John Thirkell (trumpet); Raymond Brown, Gary Bias, Michael Stewart, Kelly Wendall, Reginald Young (horns); Jerry Peters (piano); Walter Afanasieff (keyboards, synthesizer, programming); Lloyd Tolbert, Mark Taylor, Joe Wolfe (keyboards, programming); Daryl Simmons (keyboards); Michael Boddicker (synthesizer); Alex Al, Rickey Minor, Dorian Daniels, Ronnie Garrett (bass); Ricky Lawson (drums). Producers: Lionel Richie, Joe Wolfe, Brian Rawling, Mark Taylor, Rodney Jerkins. Engineers: Mark Taylor, Dirk Vanoucek, Dave Greene. "Angel" was nominatedfor the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. He's updated both his trademark big hair and his sound, which now includes hip hop beats and samples, but Lionel Ritchie's first album of the 21st century still sounds as melodic, and as harmonically complex, as anything he's done before, and the lyrics are just as heartfelt. "Angel," the album's single, for example, sounds right at home (particularly rhythmically) with anything else on the radio in 2001, but if you really listen you'll hear a classic Ritchie ballad that would have worked equally well during his '80s heyday. Elsewhere, there's a pronounced Latin influence on several of the songs such as "Cinderella," "Dance the Night Away," and "Don't You Ever Go Away." The album ends rousingly with the anthemic "Don't Stop the Music." SKU: 1061833

Anodyne (Expanded And Remastered)
Uncle Tupelo: Jay Farrar (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Jeff Tweedy (vocals, guitar, bass); Ken Coomer (drums). Additional personnel: Doug Sahm (vocals, guitar); Max Johnston (lap steel guitar, banjo, dobro, fiddle); John Stirratt (guitar, bass); Lloyd Maines (pedal steel guitar). Recorded at Cedar Creek Recording, Austin, Texas in between May and June 1993. Recorded live in the studio amid mounting tension between singer/songwriters Jay Farrar and Jeff Tweedy, ANODYNE proved to be Uncle Tupelo's last and finest album. These final sessions find Farrar and Tweedy crafting a seamless mesh of country, folk and rock that both encompasses and exceeds the range of previous albums. With the straight-up country of "Acuff-Rose" (a tribute to the famed songwriting duo), and the folky "New Madrid," Tupelo displays the traditional leanings found on MARCH 16-20, 1992, while both the bass-heavy "The Long Cut" and the barnstorming "Chickamauga" broaden the punk-tinged sound of NO DEPRESSION and STILL FEEL GONE. While ANODYNE alsofeatures a raucous collaboration with the late Doug Sahm on "Give Back the Key to My Heart," its most transcendent moments are the world-weary "Slate" and the sublime title track, one of the most beautifully bittersweet songs penned since Neil Young's "Helpless." Although ANODYNE proved to be the end of the line for Uncle Tupelo, it opened up more expansive roads for Farrar and Tweedy, who would go on separately to make such superb albums as Son Volt's TRACE and Wilco's SUMMER TEETH respectively. I Eye Aye (Live At The Montreux Jazz Festival 1972)
Personnel: Rahsaan Roland Kirk (tenor saxophone, manzello, stritch, clarinet, flute, nose flute, siren); Ron Burton (piano); Henry "Pete" Pearson (bass); Robert Shy (drums); Joe "Habao" Texidor (percussion). Recorded live at the Montreux Jazz Festival,Montreux, Switzerland on June 24, 1972. Includes liner notes by Joel Dorn, Steve Stein, Eric Frier, Michael Schwartz and Anthony Udell. Recorded during his legendary appearance at the 1972 Montreux Jazz Festival, I EYE AYE is one of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's finest releases. The multi-instrumentalist is backed by a sympathetic quartet of longtime associates: pianist Ron Burton, bassist Henry Pearson, drummer Robert Shy, and invaluable percussionist Joe Habao Texidor, who powers this set's centerpiece, a 10-minute take on Kirk's classic "Volunteered Slavery," like a man possessed. Spurred on by Texidor's fervor, Kirk turns in some of his most impassioned playing, blowing fiery solos on one to three instruments at a time and essaying one of his best "duets for one," interweaving Ellington's standard "Satin Doll" with an improvisation of his own in an intoxicating blend. A lengthy, impassioned reading of the hymn "Balm in Gilead" is the set's emotional high point, and a relaxed, swinging take on Kirk's 1964 composition "Serenade to a Cuckoo" is an absolute joy. Sinister Urge, The
Personnel: Rob Zombie (vocals); Ozzy Osbourne, Emm Gryner, Evelyn Rennu (vocals); Kerry King, Frank Gryner, Phil X, Scott Humphrey, Danny Lohner, Riggs (guitar); Jerry Hey, Gary Grant, Daniel Wiggins, Bill Renichenbach (horns); Blasko, Chris Chaney (bass); John Tempesta, Tommy Lee, Josh Freese, Gary Novak (drums); DJ Lethal (turntables). Recorded at The Chop Shop, Hollywood, California. "Never Gonna Stop (The Red, Red Kroovy)" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Metal Performance. For those who doubted that demonic vocalist Rob Zombie wouldn't be able to replicate his former band's success (White Zombie) when he left to pursue a solo career in the late-90's, the curiosities were silenced with Rob's 1998 hit solo debut, HELLBILLY DELUXE. Now, after a 3 year break (during which time he wrote and directed a horror movie that has yet to be released due to its distributor getting cold feet), good old Rob returns with his long awaited sophomore effort, THE SINISTER URGE. Similar in style to its predecessor, URGE packs more wallop than a gang of grave robbing ghouls on Halloween night - featuring cameos by such heavy metal heavyweights as Slayer guitarist Kerry King and shock metal pioneer Ozzy Osbourne. Standouts include the over-the-top intensity of the opening track, "Feel So Numb," "House of 1000 Corpses" (whichalso serves as the title of his aforementioned horror movie), and "Iron Head," the latter of which includes Ozzy supplying back-up vocals.
