1999
Personnel: Prince (vocals, various instruments); Dez (vocals, guitar); Lisa Coleman, Wendy Melvoin, J.J. (vocals). Recorded at Sunset Sound & Uptown, Los Angeles, California. With the release of this seminal double-album, Prince evolves from the minimalist synth-pop that powered such discs as DIRTY MIND and CONTROVERSY into the pop genius that defined such quirky masterpieces as PURPLE RAIN and SIGN OF THE TIMES. Were it only for the hits--the loopy bounce of "Delirious," the moody slide of "LittleRed Corvette," and the irresistible title track (only Prince could have written the ultimate dance song for the turn of the millennium 18 years before the fact)--1999 would be essential. These tracks are as perfect as they are familiar from incessant radio play. The rest of 1999 holds up to the radio hits. Loose, nasty grooves like "D.M.S.R." and "Automatic" are interspersed with the propulsive shuffle of "Let's Pretend We're Married" and the soulful, psychedelic pulse of "Something In The Water." This is not average dance music. Prince's hybrid of rich, trippy atmospherics, '80s synth-y keyboard sounds, lush, asymmetrical harmonies, elements of rock guitar, soulful singing, and strong songwriting--all rolled together with beats--weaves dark, sexual energy into ebullient boogie anthems. 1999 is one of the definitive pop music documents of the '80s. Apostrophe
Also available on cassette on Rykodisc (40025). NOTES: Personnel: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar, bass); Tony Duran (guitar); Sugar Cane Harris, Jean-Luc Ponty (violin); Napoleon Murphy Brock (saxophone, background vocals); Ian Underwood (saxophone); George Duke (keyboards); Jack Bruce, Erroneous, Tom Fowler (bass); Jim Gordon, Johnny Guerin, Ralph Humphrey, Aynsley Dunbar (drums); Ruth Underwood (percussion); Ray Collins, Kerry McNabb, Susie Glover, Debbie, Lynn, Ruben Ladron De Guevara, Robert "Frog" Camarena (background vocals). Engineers include: Steve Desper, Terry Dunavan,Barry Keene. Digitally remastered by Bob Stone. One of Zappa's most commercially successful albums, APOSTROPHE is also among his goofiest. The album found its way to the semi-mainstream chiefly on the strength of "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow"'s scatological humor, and the cheap jokes that were part of Zappa's stock in trade abound here, on tracks like the self-explanatory "Stink-Foot." Part of Zappa's genius though, much like that of Gong's Daevid Allen, was to deflate his sophisticated instrumental excursions and conceptual work with lowbrow humor and downright silliness. Nowhere is that process more apparent than on APOSTROPHE. The typically large band (including violin and horns) that accompanies Zappa here follows him through daunting twists and turns as tempos get turned around and counterpoint riffs bounce off each other at breakneck speed. In the midst of all this instrumental facility, Zappa's satirical side is well-represented, as on the bluesy "Cosmik Debris," where he casts aspersions on the guru concept. APOSTROPHE finds Zappa at a peak, where he was still successfully mingling humor with harmonic exploration and yet succumbed to the excesses of neither. SKU: 1002927

Human Touch
Personnel: Bruce Springsteen (vocals, guitar, bass); Sam Moore, Bobby King, Bobby Hatfield (vocals); Tim Pierce (guitar); Mark Isham (trumpet); Ian McLagen (piano); David Sancious (organ); Roy Bittan (keyboards); Randy Jackson (bass); Jeff Porcaro (drums, percussion); Kurt Wortman (drums); Michael Fisher (percussion); Patti Scialfa (background vocals). Producers: Bruce Springsteen, Jon Landau, Chuck Plotkin, Roy Bittan. Recorded at A&M Studios, Los Angeles, California. After a five year recording hiatus following the emotionally eloquent TUNNEL OF LOVE (and a subsequent world tour), Springsteen returned in 1992 with the tandem release of HUMAN TOUCH and LUCKY TOWN. Though released separately, both albums signalled the singer's more mature preoccupation with introspective, complicated themes of desire, despair and regret. The albums were also Springsteen's first without the full E Street Band. HUMAN TOUCH and LUCKY TOWN marry Springsteen's popular persona of fist-waving, stadium rocker with the more reflective, rootsier sound the singer favored on NEBRASKA. Of the two albums, HUMAN TOUCH is the more successful in this endeavor; songs like "Roll of the Dice" and "Real Man"are vintage, hell-raising Springsteen whereas the haunting "With Every Wish" and the roiling undercurrent of "57 Channels (And Nothin' On)" travel more uncertain avenues. "Human Touch" is pretty melodic pop and "Cross My Heart" generates pure sexual heat, gyrating with a bluesy guitar groove. HUMAN TOUCH and LUCKY TOWN may never be revered in same way as some of his other releases, but both albums are immensely satisfying as a double shot farewell to the raucous rebelliousness of Springsteen's youthful rock and roll years. Time Will Tell
Full performer name: Paul Bley/Evan Parker/Barre Phillips. Personnel: Paul Bley (piano); Evan Parker (soprano & tenor saxophones); Barre Phillips (acoustic bass). Recorded at Rainbow Studios, Oslo, Norway in January 1994. Includes liner notes by Steve Lake. This is a trio of pianist Paul Bley, saxophonist Evan Parker and bass player Barre Phillips. Bley's experience with drummerless trios dates back over thirty years to his work with Jimmy Giuffre. The interplay on these largely improvised pieces is empathetic throughout, and at times downright magical. On "Above The Tree Line" Bley's left hand is playing fragmentary low note melodic figures that entwinewith Phillips' string bass like the roots of a tree. Meanwhile, his right hand dances birdlike with Parker's soprano saxophone (and someone gets bonus points for titling this jointly credited composition in such an accurately poetic manner). Bley in particular has made a career of playing in duos and trios, listening intently, and playing off the other musicians with sensitivity and precision. This is quietly forceful improvised music of regal bearing. SKU: 1002468

Badmotorfinger
BADMOTORFINGER was reissued briefly with a limited-edition bonus disc titled S.O.M.M.S, featuring B-sides and one live track. Soundgarden: Chris Cornell (vocals, guitar); Kim Thayil (guitar); Matt Ben Shepherd (bass); Matt Cameron (drums). Additional personnel: Damon Stewart (spoken vocals); Scott Granlund (saxophone); Ernst Long (trumpet). Recorded at Studio D, Sausalito, California and Bear Creek Studios, Woodinville, Washington in 1991. Soundgarden couldn't have picked a better time to issue its best album yet, BADMOTORFINGER, in the fall of 1991. The Seattle explosion (which also included Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Alice In Chains) was just about to take off, and along with such other classic albums as NEVERMIND, TEN, and FACELIFT, BADMOTORFINGER benefitedgreatly from all of the newfound media attention and critical praise. New bassist Ben Shepherd fit in perfectly with the band, evidenced by this incredibly consistent album. Although Soundgarden's breakthrough hit, "Outshined," remains the best-known track, the whole album is a must-hear from beginning to end. While BADMOTORFINGER is certainly best experienced listening all the way through, single standouts include the barnstorming album opener, "Rusty Cage," the all-out assault "Jesus Christ Pose," as well as the crawling "Slaves & Bulldozers," and the tranquil "Mind Riot." Add to it the back-to-back epics "Searching With My Good Eye Closed" and "Room a Thousand Years Wide," plus the short punk blasts "Face Pollution" and "Drawing Flies," and you have one of the greatest rock albums to ever come out of the Emerald City. MTV Unplugged V2.0 (+DVD)
Dashboard Confessional: Christopher Ender Carrabba (vocals, guitar); Johnny Lefler (guitar); Dan Bonebrake (bass); Mike Marsh (drums). Recorded live at MTV Studios, New York, New York. Chris Carraba, the tortured soul who hides behind the stage name Dashboard Confessional, intros "The Best Deceptions" on his turn at the MTV UNPLUGGED mic with "here's a song about feeling bad and feeling better." That's practically him summing up his songwriting with zen-like simplicity, although like most who get tarred with the emo brush his compositions tend more towards the former. Many can relate and have related to the burning frustration and repeated indignities suffered during futile attempts at finding love and attaching meaning to an often-baffling existence; Carraba's songs tap into the confusion synonymous with growing up with startling clarity. While one could question the necessity of an unplugged record from an acoustic artist with one legitimate full-length album and a couple EPs, there's something eclectic going on in Carraba's world captured on his volume of MTV UNPLUGGED. While he surely hasn't plugged in as long as he's recorded under current sobriquet, hiselectricity comes from his winding lyrics. In a live setting, the spark comes from his adoring fans who join him in taut lines like "...sit alone and wonder how you're making out but as for me I wish that I was anywhere with anyone making out." Journey In Satchidananda
Personnel: Alice Coltrane (piano, harp); Pharaoh Sanders (soprano saxophone, percussion); Vishnu Wood (oud); Tulsi (tamboura); Cecil McBee, Charlie Haden (bass); Rashied Ali (drums); Majid Shabazz (tambourine, bells). Producers: Alice Coltrane, Ed Michel. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at The Coltrane Studio, Dix Hills, New York on November 8, 1970 and live at the Village Gate, New York, New York on July 4, 1970. Originally released on Impulse (9203). Includes liner notes by Alice Coltrane. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios). The death of John Coltrane left not only a musical, but a spiritual void among his many followers and admirers. By aligning himself with the searchers among the new generation, John Coltrane legitimized their quest and set a daunting standard of excellence for those who experiment outside the mainstream of modern jazz. Among those searchers was young Alice McLeod of Detroit, a virtuoso on the vibraphone, piano, organ and harp. John Coltrane had always expressed a fondness for the harp, and while young McLeod never did bring that instrument into the context of Trane's working groups, she did bring her rolling, ecstatic style of piano to bear in the saxophonist's last quartets and quintets as Mrs. Alice Coltrane. JOURNEY IN SATCHIDANANDA, recorded in the fall of 1970, is a serene, composed meditation on the lessons of the 1960's, a mystical work of enduring sweetness and spiritual longing. The concluding cut "Isis And Osiris" (recorded earlier that summer at the Village Gate), is a global village of texture and song, animated by Pharaoh Sanders' gently wafting soprano and Rashied Ali's quicksilver brushwork, as Vishnu Wood's feathery oud, Charlie Haden's woody bass and Coltrane's sweeping harp combine to create a dreamy vortex of sound. The title cut and "Shiva-Loka"--centered around Cecil McBee's sonorous, lyric bass vamps and Tulsi's droning tamboura--are gorgeous evocations of modal jazz and Indian ragas, again exploiting the contrast between Sanders' reedy chants and Coltrane's blissful arpeggios. And then there's"Stopover Bombay" and "Something About John Coltrane," which reveal the melodious symmetry of Alice Coltrane's piano playing, a singular style deeply imbued in the old time testimonies of the spirituals and the blues. Whatever And Ever Amen [Remastered] [PA]
Ben Folds Five: Ben Folds (vocals, piano); Robert Sledge (vocals, bass); Darren Jessee (vocals, drums). Additional personnel: Alicia Svigals (violin); John Catchings (cello); Matt Darriau (clarinet); Frand London (trumpet); Caleb Southern (Hammond organ). Includes seven bonus tracks. Ben Folds Five: Darren Jessee, Robert Sledge, Ben Folds. Recording information: 1997. Boldly hacking his way through the muck-infested swamplands of post-Nirvana alternative rock, Ben Folds comes to save the day with an album of pure pop delights that provide a welcome alternative to "alternative." Despite the name, the Ben Folds Five is a trio consisting of Folds on piano and vocals, a bassist and a drummer. There are echoes of everything from vintage Todd Rundgren and Joe Jackson to Hoboken-based popsters like the dB's and Freedy Johnston in the band's frothy compositions. And there are no guitars. Bassist Robert Sledge is on a one-man mission to bring back the fuzz-bass, utilizing the '60s bass technique to fill out the sound of the trio, and sometimes sounding more like a guitarist or keyboardist. Foldsis an accomplished pianist, and has no qualms about giving the instrument the rock and roll spotlight that it's often denied. Ignore the knee-jerk Elton John comparisons. Folds may be equally influenced by show tunes and the Beatles, but WHATEVER rocks more convincingly than a gaggle of guitar-worshipping grunge puppies. SKU: 6586202

Slowhand
Personnel: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); George Terry (guitar); Mel Collins (saxophone); Dick Sims (keyboards); Carl Radle (bass); James Oldaker (drums, percussion); Marcy Levy, Yvonne Elliman (background vocals). Recorded at Olympic Studios, London, England in May 1977. All tracks have been digitally remastered. SLOWHAND was the album which defined the new cool of Eric Clapton, a sultry, laid-back mix of rock and blues, with a heavy dose of country and southwestern regional sounds to leaven the blend. After LAYLA, SLOWHAND was probably Clapton's most popular, fully realized solo disc. The opening number was by J.J. Cale, whose "After Midnight" had been one of the real joys of the guitarist's first solo excursion, ERIC CLAPTON. "Cocaine," with its slow grinding beat, menacing melodic vamp and one-step from perdition lyrics, was the toughest, most rocking number on SLOWHAND, and a major radio hit from the outset. A couple of vocal duets with countryish harmonies set the tone for the rest of SLOWHAND. "Lay Down Sally" was a funky, chicken-fried bit of boogie with a taut, melodic aside from Clapton's twangy Stratocaster, while Don Williams' sweet, soulful "We're All The Way" provided a low-key vehicle for Clapton's tender vocal exchanges with Marcy Levy,as his understated arpeggios toll away in the background. One Night Of Sin
Personnel: Joe Cocker (vocals); Bryan Adams, Phil Grande, Jeff Pevar (guitar); Lenny Pickett, Frank Elmo, Mario Cruz, Crispin Cioe, Deric Dyer, Arno Hecht (saxophone); Paul Litteral, Mark Pender (trumpet); Richie Labamba, Robert Funk (trombone); Jeff Levine (piano, organ, synthesizer, percussion); Chris Stainton (organ, synthesizer); T.M. Stevens (bass); David Beal (drums, percussion); Bashiri Johnson (percussion); Curtis King, Vaneese Thomas, Tawatha Agee (background vocals). Recorded at Atlantic Recording Studio, New York, New York. This followup to Cocker's comebackalbum (1987's UNCHAIN MY HEART) boasts the same band, the same production team, and the same esthetic approach, i.e. it's a savvy mix of slick late '80s power ballads and cannily chosen cover songs. The latter, not surprisingly, provide the meat of the album. Cocker apparently relates to the sexual paranoia in Leonard Cohen's "I'm Your Man," and he gives it an appropriately volcanic rendering. Even better, he seems to locate a similar feeling of dread in the old Little Willie John/Peggy Lee chestnut "Fever," and he positively out- Elvis's Elvis with his take on the similarly-themed title song. Guilt never sounded so good. SKU: 5059796

Transient Random Noise Bursts With Announcements
Stereolab: Laetitia Sadier (vocals, guitar, Vox organ, Moog synthesizer, tambourine); Mary Hansen (vocals, guitar, tambourine); Tim Gane (guitar, Vox organ, Moog synthesizer, percussion); Sean O'Hagan (guitar, Vox & Farfisa organs); Duncan Brown (guitar, bass, background vocals); Andy Ramsay (bazouki, Vox organ, percussion). Recorded at Blackwing Studios, London, England in May, 1993. Stereolab's brilliantly-titled third album is the first fully-realized example of the band's unique vision that combined the mechanical rhythms of early-'70s krautrock and the lush romantic flourishes of '60s soft pop inthe Astrud Gilberto/Dionne Warwick tradition. To this mix the band added the relentless drones and political fixations of late-'80s British indie guitar bands such as McCarthy (Stereolab leaders Tim Gane and Laetitia Sadier's first band) and the gorgeous textures of vintage analogue synthesizers. Packaged in a perfect reproduction of the sleeve of an early-'60s hi-fi test disc, complete with technical liner notes, TRANSIENT RANDOM-NOISE BURSTS WITH ANNOUNCEMENTS follows one wonderful track with another, culminating in the astonishing 18-minute "Jenny Ondioline," an obsessive explorations of all the sonic and melodic possibilities of one chord, overlaid with creamy Beach Boys-style harmonies and Sadier's melodic trill. The song, like the rest of the album, is a definitive moment in '90s indiepop. SKU: 1007016

Lubbock (On Everything)
Personnel includes: Terry Allen (vocals, piano); Lloyd Maines (acoustic &electric & pedal steel guitars, dobro, mandolin, tenor banjo, bell tree, background vocals); Luis Martinez, Jessie Taylor (guitar); Richard Bowden (fiddle); Joe Ely (harmonica); Ponte Bone (accordion); Don Caldwell (saxophone); Tommie Anderson (trumpet); Mark Anthony (trombone); Russ Standefer (tuba); Kenny Maines (bass, background vocals); Curtis McBride (drums); Allan Shinn (percussion, marimba, jawbone, castanets); Sylvester "Band Aid" Rice, Gwen Hewitt, Suzanne Paulk, Jo Harvey Allen, Freddy Pride, Mike Austin, Vincent Thomas, Jimmy Sampson (background vocals); Monterey High School Marching Band. Recorded at Caldwell Studios, Lubbock, Texas. Terry Allen's 1979 double album, LUBBOCK (ON EVERYTHING), is a 20-song folk-country-pop-jazz-art-weirdness masterpiece. Written and recorded in the somewhat isolated west Texas college town where Allen grew up, it is an ambivalently affectionate record. Allen's west Texas character studies, like the high school football star turned Pinkie's Mini-Mart robber in "The Great Joe Bob (A Regional Tragedy)," are both empathetic and savage, skewering local mores and pretensions with a wit that never becomes mean-spirited. Other tracks, such as "The Collector and the Art Mob" and the surreal "Truckload of Art," give the same treatment to the world of visual art where Allen, an accomplished painter and sculptor, has spent most of his adult life. The album ends with the touching "Thirty Years War Waltz," a valentine to Allen's writer/actress wife Jo Harvey Allen. Despite the often sarcastic lyrics, sweetness and affection shine throughout this album. SKU: 1009883

Documentary, The (Parental Advisory) [PA]
Personnel: The Game (rap vocals); Faith Evans, Mary J. Blige (vocals); Eminem, 50 Cent, Marsha, Nate Dogg, Tony Yayo, Busta Rhymes (rap vocals). On his official debut, THE DOCUMENTARY, Los Angeles rapper the Game (born Jayceon Taylor) observes he "was an ol' G in the hood" before he was 22. The Game has truly packed a lifetime of fury, chaos, and crime into his first years of adulthood, living life with a reckless passion. After a gunshot wound sent him into a temporary coma, he decided to put his agile mind to better use in hip-hop, and his complex, ferocious raps swiftly became mixtape staples. After many twists and turns, the Game finally dropped the highly anticipated THE DOCUMENTARY as the first major hip-hop release of 2005, and it's quite an opening salvo. On the Kanye West-produced "Dreams," hedisplays a dizzying intellect, subtly working an apt quote from Nas into an imagined bi-coastal conference between Jam Master Jay and Eazy-E. (The track also invokes political figures ranging from Ronald Reagan to Huey Newton.) The Game's clearly been immersed in the rap world from an early age, and he tips his hat to both past masters and his contemporaries, many of whom appear on the record (Eminem, 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, and others). THE DOCUMENTARY heralds a stunning new voice in rap by living up to its overwhelming hype. SKU: 6581664

Last Sessions
On these final 17 recordings of Mississippi John Hurt's remarkable career, the septuagenarian songster evinces all the warmth, humor, and mastery that mark the entirety of his recorded work. A gifted fingerpicker, singer, and songwriter, Hurt spent most of his life in obscurity. The folk boom of the '60s revived the music career he had abandoned during the Depression. Before his death in 1966, Hurt completed four wonderful albums for Vanguard Records. LAST SESSIONS includes Hurt's takes on others' blues classics ("Poor Boy, Long Ways From Home," "Goodnight, Irene") as well as a number of great originals ("Let the Mermaids Flirt with Me," "Trouble, I've Had it All My Days"). Throughout, Hurt deftly mixes the serious ("You Got to Die") with the bawdy ("Funky Butt") and whimsical ("Spider, Spider"). Like all available Hurt recordings, LAST is a great album from one of the '60s' greatest artists. SKU: 1002518

DEUCES WILD was nominated for a 1999 Grammy forBest Contemporary Blues Album. You can't move an inch without tripping over a superstar on this album of celebrity duets. On DEUCES WILD, B. B. looks beyond the blues world to collaborate with such unlikely folks as Willie Nelson, Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour, and even rapper Heavy D. On newly recorded versions of classic B.B. numbers such as "The Thrill Is Gone" (with Tracy Chapman) and "Paying The Cost To Be The Boss" (with the Rolling Stones), the legendary blues guitarslinger reinvents his own material to accommodate his famous pals, whose respect for King and enthusiasm for this project are apparent on each track. Most effective are the tunes that find B.B. paired up with veteran blues belters like Joe Cocker ("Dangerous Mood") and Van Morrison ("If You Love Me"). SKU: 1000706

Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets
Original score composed by John Williams. Performed by London SymphonyOrchestra and London Voices, conducted by William Ross. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, England. The soundtrack to Warner Brothers Pictures' HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS is a fairly run-of-the-mill offering from the great John Williams. In other words, it's better than most other soundtrack composers' best work. Like the classic scores from CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND or JAWS, the music here is rich and elegant, with heady doses of Williams's trademark charging string sections and thundering tympani. While it often recalls the composer's work on RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and ET: THE EXTRATERRESTRIAL, the HARRY POTTER score also occasionally sports a certain cartoonish stop-and-start quality seemingly influenced by Danny Elfman. This style may seem slightly out of character for Williams (who's known more for his grand, sweeping statements and heart-stopping climaxes), but the effect is totally appropriate for what is, after all, a movie about a teenage wizard who rides around on a broom in a coat and tie. HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS provides a perfect reminder of the excitement, intrigue and light-hearted spirit of both the film and J.K. Rowling's novels. SKU: 1077406

Live On St. Patrick's Day
Dropkick Murphys: Al Barr (vocals); Marc Orrell (guitar, accordion); James Lynch (guitar); Ryan Foltz (mandolin, whistle); Spicy McHaggis (bag pipes); Ken Casey (bass, background vocals); Matt Kelly (drums). Additional personnel: Boston Police Gaelic Column Pipes & Drums, Harney School Of Dance Step Dancers. Recorded live at the Avalon Ballroom, Boston, Massachusetts in March 2002. Includes liner notes by Nancy Hammerle Teacher and Dennis Lshane Author. This Boston-based Irish punk band's proletarian, all-for-one attitude, as espoused consistently in its lyrics, is perhaps best exemplified by a live album like this one, where their energy and communal relationship with their audience can be clearly heard. You can hear the crowd chanting along to the lyrics of Dropkick Murphys' working-class anthems with faithful vigor, and the band responds in kind by kicking the already-high energy level up even further. Though their blend of punk and Celtic flavors is unique (they surely don't have much company in blending punk guitars and bagpipes), the sound (and the sociopolitics) also bear strong echoes of early Oi outfits like Sham69, all rousing shout-along choruses and martial rhythms. Interestingly, its when they tackle the more Irish-sounding tunes (as on "The Rocky Road to Dublin") that the boys seem to be at their punkiest. SKU: 1074645

Live In Paris
Personnel: Diana Krall (vocals, piano, Fender Rhodes piano); Alan Broadbent (conductor); Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone); Ron Mounsey (keyboards); John Pisano (acoustic guitar); Anthony Wilson (guitar); John Clayton, Christian McBride (bass); Jeff Hamilton, Lewis Nash (drums); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); The Orchestra Symphonique European. Recorded live at the Paris Olympia, Paris, France on November 29-30 & December 1-2, 2001 and Avatar Studios, New York, New York. LIVE IN PARIS won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Diana Krall is best known as a purveyor of gently drifting ballads, with a trademark laconic delivery. Such preconceptions may be slightly nudged, ifnot altered, when her LIVE IN PARIS concert document kicks off with a swinging, up-tempo "I Love Being Here With You" that finds her making like Annie Ross, while also giving her top-shelf band a chance to blow. Aficionados of those aforementioned narcotized standards will soon be set to their ease however, as Krall moves slowly and deliberately through the likes of "Let's Fall in Love" and a bossa nova-tinged "I've Got You Under My Skin," her voice sailing atop a velvet sea of strings provided by Alan Broadbent and the Orchestra Symphonies European. Towards the end of the program, she turns to more modern contributors to the Great American (or in one case, Canadian) Songbook, offering a solo piano-and-vocal rendition of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" and a decidedly pop-oriented studio take on Billy Joel's ubiquitous "Just the Way You Are." Joshua Tree, The
U2: Bono (vocals, harmonica); The Edge (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Adam Clayton (bass); Larry Mullen, Jr. (drums). Additional personnel includes: Daniel Lanois (guitar, keyboards, tambourine, background vocals); Brian Eno (keyboards, programming, background vocals). Engineers include: Flood. Recorded at Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland. THE JOSHUA TREE won the 1987 Grammy award for album of the year. After their arresting appearance at Live Aid, U2 album sales went berserk across the globe, and the world waited impatiently for their next release. The Joshua Tree arrived, and fans were not disappointed. There are few weaknesses, musical or lyrical, in this album. Thepure power of the music and patent honesty of the lyrics steer the band clear of whimsy and self-indulgence. The anguish and questioning is shot through with faith as they chant and stomp and batter their way through instant classics such as 'Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For', 'Where The Streets Have No Name' and 'With Or Without You', leaving the listener bruised but elated.
