Odelay
Personnel: Beck Hansen (vocals, acoustic, slide & electric guitars, harmonica, electric piano, celeste, Clavinet, organ, keyboards, bass, drums, percussion); Greg Leisz (pedal steel guitar); David Brown (saxophone); Mike Boito (trumpet, organ); Charlie Haden (acoustic bass); Joey Waronker (drums, percussion); Ross Harris. Producers: Beck Hansen, The Dust Brothers, Mario Caldato Jr., Brian Paulson, Tom Rothrock. Like its creator's freewheeling songwriting process, ODELAY is a monument to wondrously precise pastiche. It's a glowing junkyard of musical styles, absurdist images, distorted samples, postmodern anti-emotions, you name it. Over the course of his three previous albums, Beck tinkered with more traditions and aesthetic approaches than an average cultural-studies professor sees in a career: hip-hop beats, acoustic folk-blues, indie-punk guitar squalls, DIY production, commercial smash! ODELAY accounts for all those things, too, but it also furthers the seamless, rump-shaking sheen of its collage nature, turning process into possible meaning. On one hand, the thematic darkness that hangs over most of these songs exposes Beck for the creative doomsayer he is--just another sullen young man with a gift of the native tongues. On the other, the life-affirming irreverence with which he drops harebrained couplets, monologues and call-and-response chants based on designer-jeans brands betrays the glowing confidence of someone in love with all the places the creative process can take you. Grooving all the while, Beck seems like the loving creator of a '90s version of the electric Dylan frenzy. And ODELAY seems sorta like his BRINGING IT ALL BACKHOME. SKU: 1005483

On Fire
ON FIRE is available along with Galaxie 500's two other full-length albums on the 4-CD box set GALAXIE 500 (Rykodisc 10355). Galaxie 500: Dean Wareham (vocals, guitar); Naomi Yang (vocals, bass); Damon Krukowski (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Ralph Carney (tenor saxophone); Kramer (organ, background vocals). Recorded at Noise New York, New York, New York in 1989. Includes liner notes by Kramer and Byron Coley. Originally released on Rough Trade. Arguably the band's best effort, ON FIRE typifies Galaxie 500's slow, dreamy, three-chord song craft. In tone, style, song structure and their attempt at achieving an almost drone-like meditative quality, the band clearly worship at the altar of the Velvet Underground. Drummer Damon Krukowski, bassist Naomi Yang and particularly guitarist/vocalist Dean Wareham, who probably dreamsof Lou Reed floating to him in the night singing chorus after chorus of "Pale Blue Eyes," follow impressively in the footsteps of their mentors. The tone may vary slightly, from delicate, haunting melodies such as "Tell Me," to the open, floating spaces of "Snowstorm," and the desperate cries of alienation of "Strange," but the predominant mood is one of quiet, murky introspection. Though detractors may accuse the band of sounding somewhat monochromatic, there's a definite charm to Galaxie 500's simple, atmospheric pop songs and Wareham's surreal lyrics and unadorned, unaffected voice; his poignant treatment here of George Harrison's "Isn't It A Pity" is particularly notable. Divas Gold Collection, The
Yeah, Rita Hayworth sang too. Everybody's favorite red-headed temptress actually doesn't have much of a voice, but she acquits herself nicely on the 19 songs on the second disc of this collection, which range from cutesy novelties like "What Does An English Girl Think of Ya, Yank?" to standards like a perfectly credible rendition of "MyFunny Valentine." She certainly comes off much better than most of the movie and television stars who have recorded albums over the years. However, in comparison to the 20 Marlene Dietrich classics on disc one, Hayworth sounds strictly amateur. This is through no fault of her own; Dietrich is simply a far superior song stylist. A well-chosen collection of Dietrich standards including fine renditions of her signature songs "Lili Marlene" and "Falling In Love Again," disc one of DIVAS is an excellent introduction to the work of one of the great artists of her era. Don't Give Up On Me
DON'T GIVE UP ON ME features song contributions from Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Nick Lowe, Dan Penn, Joe Henry, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Personnel: Solomon Burke, Blind Boys Of Alabama (vocals); Daniel Lanois, Chris Bruce (guitar); Bennie Wallace (tenor saxophone); David Palmer (piano, organ); Rudy Copeland (organ); David Pitch (bass); Jay Bellerose (drums, percussion); Niki Harris, Jean McClain (background vocals). Recorded at Sunset Sound Factory, Hollywood, California on February 25-28, 2002. Includes liner notes by Johnny Whiteside. DON'T GIVE UP ON ME won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Van Morrison--the stellar list of songwriting contributors on this comeback effort by '60s soul legend Solomon Burke goeson and on. Did we mention Brian Wilson, Nick Lowe, and even his highness Bob Dylan also donating tunes? Burke came to prominence when soul music was a staple on AM radio as performed by himself and peers Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, and Aretha Franklin. Contemporary R&B singers from the endlessly melismatic school could learn a thing or two from Burke's passionate restraint. As producer, the singer-songwriter Joe Henry takes a page from the Daniel Lanois (Dylan, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris) school favoring natural sounds, deep resonance, and subtly spectral reverb. There is much reverence to the past in this relatively stripped down approach, but it is also perfectly evident upon close inspection that this is a contemporary album. Burke had recently been active singing in church, and on this effort he shows that he hasn't forgotten where he came from, bringing along his parish's tasty organist, Brother Rudy Copeland. The tone throughout is primarily serious, occasionally solemn, and then along comes the straight-ahead blues by Dylan to inject the proceedings with playful self-pity and -mockery on "Stepchild" (as in "You treat me like a"). Honorable mention goes to Fat Possum Records for having the foresight and inspiration to re-introduce an overlooked American gem to a mainstream audience. SKU: 1074371

More Songs About Buildings And Food
Also available with TALKING HEADS '77 on 1 cassette. Talking Heads: David Byrne (vocals, guitar, percussion); Jerry Harrison (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Tina Weymouth (bass, background vocals); Chris Frantz (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Brian Eno (various instruments, background vocals). Recorded at Compass Point Studio,New Providence, The Bahamas in March and April 1978. The Heads' second album found them building on the twitchy "new wave" sound they established with their debut while using that approach as a springboard for new lyrical and musical innovations. The band's sonic pallette is a bit wider here; the interplay between the guitars of David Byrne and Jerry Harrison is more fully developed here, are Harrison's keyboard contributions (he was, after all, strictly a keys man in the Modern Lovers, one of the Heads' primary influences). The band displays diversity with their first recorded cover tune, Al Green's "Take Me To The River," which they redefine with an ominous, supple sensuality. While Byrne still sounds like his nerves are being stretched to the breaking point, the band is a little looser here, as on the jumpy, Velvet Underground-ish "Thank You For Sending Me an Angel." Byrne's hyper-intellectualism is in full flower on BUILDINGS, from the gender politics lesson "The Girls Want to Be With the Girls" to the New York bohemian slant of "Artists Only," whose key phrase is "you can't see it till it's finished!" Express [Remastered]
Love And Rockets: Daniel Ash (vocals, guitar, saxophone); David J. (vocals, bass); Kevin Haskins (drums). Additional personnel: Allan Baker (conductor); Alan Brookes, James Lowry, Robert Willey (vocals); John A. Rivers (keyboards). Digitally remastered by John A. Rivers (2001, Woodbine Studios). Every time Love And Rockets released a new record during the 1980's they were reminded they lived under not only under the shadow of their previous band, Bauhaus, but also with the presence of that band's ex-frontman Peter Murphy, with whose solo career they found themselves in direct competition. Fortunately, by EXPRESS, the band had finally come into their own. Sounding something like a Goth version of T. Rex (guitarist Daniel Ash somewhat resembled Marc Bolan), EXPRESS is a hook-fest from beginning to end. The album is probably best known for its kinetic cover of "Ball of Confusion," which charted in England and America, but contains any number of gems. However the real stunner here is "Kundalini Express," which builds and builds until the listener has reached, if not Nirvana, at least the Pixies. From the glam rock of "All in My Mind," to the, uh, glam rock of "ItCould Be Sunshine," Love and Rockets took and retooled the power riffs of the '70s, largely thanks to programming/drumming wiz Kevin Haskins. A consistently powerful record by one of the best bands of the '80s. SKU: 1066467

XO
Personnel: Elliott Smith; Rob Schnapf (guitar); Farhad Behroozi, Russel Cantor, Pamela Dealmeida, Waldemar Dealmeida, Henry Ferber, Jerrod Goodman, Peter Hatch, Raymond Tischer II (strings); Bruce Escovitz (flute, baritone saxophone, bass); Roy Poper (trumpet); R. James Atkinson (French horn); Jon Brion (chamberlain, vibraphone); Joey Waronker (drums); Tom Rothrock (drum loop). Producers: Tom Rothrock, Rob Schnapf, Elliot Smith. Engineers: Tom Rothrock, Rob Schnapf, Elliot Smith, Larry Crane. Recorded at Sunset Sound, Sound Factory, Ocean Way, Sonora, Los Angeles, California; Jackpot!, Portland, Oregon. The Cinderella-esque climb from lo-fi indie cult artist to Grammy nominee/major label darling must have been a perilous one for Smith, who makes the leap to the big time here after three well-regarded albums on small labels. He's lost none of his bite, though. The production values on XO may be slightly higher, but Smith's vision remains undiluted. The production, centered around acoustic guitar augmented by keyboards and lush vocal harmonies, recalls pop icons like the Beach Boys (especially on the closing acapella cut), Beatles and Big Star, but this is no sunny Cali-pop album. Leavening the instrumental brightness are Smith's Nick Drake-ishwhisper and his thoroughly downcast lyrics, which cast him squarely in the Mark Eitzel/Smog camp of unrelenting self-effacement and misery. The combination of Smith's internal angst and his melodic pop constructions makes for a compelling artistic tension. SKU: 1005341

Hymns To The Silence
Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals, guitar, harmonica, alto saxophone); Steve Gregory (flute, baritone saxophone); Kate St. John (English horn); Neil Drinkwater (accordion, piano, synthesizer); Candy Dulfer (alto saxophone); Haji Ahkba (flugelhorn); Eddie Friel (piano, organ, synthesizer); Georgie Fame (piano, organ, background vocals); Terry Disley (piano); Derek Bell (synthesizer); Nicky Scott, Steve Pearce (bass); Dave Early (drums, percussion); Paul Robinson (drums); Carol Kenyon, Katie Kissoon (background vocals); The Chieftains. Recorded at The Wool Hall Studios, Bath, England; The Townhouse, Westside Studios and Pavillion Studios, London, England. A double CD at this stage of his career came as a surprise, but a double CD this good, came as a shock. Morrison had a great deal to say in 1991 about his childhood and his faith; much of it came through on this record in a much less oblique way than we had been used to. The spoken dialogue on "OnHyndford Street" is intensely personal and revealing. For once, we were hearing Morrison's thoughts. Morrison clearly has religion but on this riveting record he refused to preach. Georgie Fame continued to add familiarity to the sound and this was the best Morrison album for many, many years. Hits Vol.1, The
Personnel: Prince (vocals, various instruments); Claire Fischer (conductor); Jimmy Johnson, Dez Dickerson, Miko (vocals, guitar); Atlanta Bliss, Eric Leeds (vocals, brass); Boni Boyer (vocals, Hammond organ); Cat (vocals); Sheila E. (vocals, percussion). The Revolution: Wendy Melvoin (vocals, guitar, violin); Lisa Coleman (vocals, violin, keyboards); Matt Fink (vocals, keyboards, synthesizer); Brown Mark (vocals, bass); Bobby Z. (percussion). The New Power Generation: Rosie Gaines (vocals, organ, programming); Mayte (vocals); Tony M. (rap vocals, background vocals); Levi Seacer Jr. (rhythm guitar, bass, background vocals); Tommy Barbarella (keyboards, programming); background vocals); Sonny T. (bass, background vocals); Michael B. (drums); Kirk Johnson, Damon Dickson (background vocals, percussion). Producers: The Revolution, The New Power Generation, Prince. Engineers include: Susan Rogers, Prince, David Leonard. Compilation producer: Gregg Geller. Includes liner notes by Alan Leeds. THE HITS 1 includes two previously unreleased tracks, extensive liner notes, track annotations, recording information and photographs by Herb Ritts. Upon their release in 1993, the shorthand descriptors were that THE HITS ONE contained the "clean" songs while THE HITS TWO had all the "dirty" stuff. It's not quite so simple. Even Prince's most chaste material, like the finger-wagging "Pop Life," has a certain limpid eroticism. "Soft and Wet" and the power-poppy "When You Were Mine," while nowhere near as blatant as some of The Purple One's other tracks, still raise an eyebrow. What's most interesting is the way the best songs from uneven albums like GRAFFITI BRIDGE and otherwise obscure tracks like the jazzy "Seven" assume a new luster in the company of classics like "When Doves Cry." THE HITS ONE contains the previously unreleased "Pink Cashmere" and a live version of "Nothing Compares 2 U." Thisdisc and its companion volume are also available as a box set with an essential bonus third disc of b-sides. SKU: 4122488

Additional personnel: Colin James (guitar, mandolin); Dominic Miller, Paul Brady, Arty McGlynn, Foggy Little (guitar); Kieran Hanrahan (banjo); Terry Tulley (Scottish pipes); Carlos Nunez (Galician pipes); Brendan Begley, James Keane, Martin O'Connor (accordion); Steve Cooney (didgeridoo); Wally Minko (piano); James Blennerhassett, Ned Mann (acoustic bass); Joe Csibi (bass); Darryl Jones, Nicky Scott (bass); Noel Eccles, Tommy Igoe, Liam Bradley (drums); Jean Butler (foot percussion); AnunaChoir, Brian Masterson (background vocals); The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Sting, Ry Cooder, Mark Knopfler, Sinead O'Connor, Phil Coulter, Marianne Faithfull, Tom Jones. Producers: Paddy Moloney, Chris Kimsey, Ry Cooder. Engineers include: Chris Kimsey, Jeffrey Lesser, Brian Masterson. Recorded at Lake House Studio, England; Windmill Lane and Westland Studios, Dublin, Ireland; Clinton Recording Studios, New York; Utility Muffin Research Kitchen, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Paddy Moloney. "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?," performed with Van Morrison, won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. THE LONG BLACK VEIL was nominated for a 1996 Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. With traditional instruments abounding, Celtic folk band The Chieftains are joined by some of the most distinctive vocalists in rock music for a tour of the Irish soul. Drenched in fiddles, Uileann pipes, harp, bodhran, and flute, THE LONG BLACK VEIL is a rousing triumph in this band's illustrious thirty-year career. Sting's vocals are showcased on "Mo Ghile Mear," a Scottish ayre and keening call to arms. "The Long Black Veil," a Lefty Frizzell song popularized by The Band, features Mick Jagger displaying an inherent American hills folk influence. "The Foggy Dew" and "He Moved Through The Fair," two Sinead O'Connor-led traditional tunes, glow with her vibrant, instrument-like voice. A powerful Tom Jones joins his Celtic brothers on the "Tennessee Waltz/Tennessee Mazurka" medley, posing comparisons between American and Irish folk music. Straight out of a smoky pub, the sensational, fog-and-gravel-voiced Marianne Faithfull contributes a sage "Love Is Teasin'." Rounding out the mostly traditional set is Ry Cooder, Mark Knopfler, and the soulful Van Morrison who reprises his "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?" The Chieftains are revered by many, and some of their more famous fans have paid them a splendid musical tribute with THE LONG BLACK VEIL. SKU: 5061922

Mix Tape Vol.3
Full title: The Mix Tape Volume 3: The Final Chapter. THE MIX TAPE VOLUME III: THE FINALCHAPTER is a continuous, in-the-mix recording by Funkmaster Flex featuring pre-recorded tracks and MCs freestyling over instrumental tracks. The king of New York hip-hop radio, Funk Master Flex serves up the latest edition of his well-known mix tape collections. With over 70 minutes of non-stop hip-hop tracks, Flex MC's with freestyles by some of hip-hop's hottest artists over instrumental tracks. For those unfamiliar with mix tape styles, it's cool to hear Cam'ron and Charlie Baltimore flowing over Raekwon's "Incarcerated Scarfaces" track. It's impossible to list all the guest stars, so suffice it to say that Flex brings out the talent for his latest release. Check out the Canibus freestyle over Raekwon's "Ice Cream," Keith Murray's verse over "Lump Lump" by Sadat X and DMX's killer flow over Mobb Deep's "Give Up the Goods." Flex mixes current MCs with some old school flavor by throwing in well-placed freestyle rhymes from Busy Bee and King Sun. Bits and pieces of tracks from Jr. Mafia ("Get Money"), Jay-Z ("Ain't No Nigga") and Foxy Brown ("10% Dis") round out the short freestyle selection of tracks. Other groups and MCs representing are EPMD, KRS-One, Gang Starr, Missy Elliot, Flip Mode Squad and many others. SKU: 1029656

Split The Difference
Additional personnel include: Naomi Radom (violin); Nick Wales (viola); Clare Brassil (cello); Dajon Everette (drums, percussion). While the UK band Gomez occasionally gets miscast among Britpop acts of the 1990s, its sound is distinctly separate from groups such as Blur, Oasis, and the Verve. Like the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin, Gomez trades in gin-soaked, fuzz-laden heavy rock that owes much to the sounds of worn-out discs by early-20th-century blues artists. With its fourth album, SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE, the quintet hits a new peak, creating a burning, blues-inspired record rife with ruminating, serpentine guitars--an album that would likely have been lauded in the late '60s or early '70s, but also stands out nicely in 2004. SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE fittingly opens with a classic-rock guitar riff that leads up to the growling, infectious chorus of "Do One" and then slips into the folksy, Band-style ballad "These 3 Sins." From there, the album ebbs and flows with varyingdegrees of unpredictable barroom rock. While Gomez is steeped in rich musical history, they've fashioned a sound distinctly their own, and SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE sees the ensemble comfortably hitting its stride. SKU: 6559546

After The Goldrush
Also available with HARVEST on 1 cassette. Personnel: Neil Young (vocals, guitar, harmonica, keyboards); Danny Whitten (vocals, guitar); Nils Lofgren (vocals, piano); Stephen Stills (vocals); Billy Talbot, Greg Reeves (bass); Ralph Molina (drums). Young's first solo release since joining Crosby, Stills And Nash, After The Goldrush confirmed the singer's talent in the full glare of the public eye. His most eclectic set to date encompassed the delicate wistfulness of 'I Believe In You' and 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart', as well as the electric anger of 'Southern Man', a raging tour de force thatcaptured the special tension generated between Young and backing group Crazy Horse. Stills and Nils Lofgren also provided support on an album consolidating a talent while extending its range. The transformation of Don Gibson's 'Oh Lonesome Me' from canter to ballad confirmed an original musical vision, but the album's continued strength is due to Young's own remarkable compositions.
