I'm Alright
Personnel: Jo Dee Messina (vocals); Larry Byrum (acoustic guitar); Brent Mason, MichaelLandau, Dann Huff, Pat Buchanan, Jeffrey C. King, Byron Gallimore (electric guitar); Paul Franklin, Sonny Garrish (steel guitar); Glen Duncan (fiddle, mandolin); Steven J. Nathan (piano); Mike Brignardello (bass); William (Lon) Wilson (drums); Terry McMillan (percussion); Curtis Young, Kim Parent, Chris Rodriguez, Ralph Friedrichsen (background vocals). Recorded at Loud Recording, Nashville, Tennessee. Jo Dee Messina's sophomore album might be called I'M ALRIGHT, but its real message is "I'm Alright...without you." In song after song on this mostly upbeat album, Jo Dee plays the Strong Woman role, whether she's telling unfaithful or non-committal lovers to beat it, or insisting on a relationship that's equal in every way. In the infectious "Bye Bye," she's driving away from her loser boyfriend, declaring that she's got "the rear view mirror torn off, I ain't never lookin' back." Elsewhere, she's talking herself into leaving a nowhere relationship ("No Time For Tears"), refusing to get involved with a guy who's bad news ("I Know A Heartache") or warning a straying lover that he'll get what's coming to him one day (a cover of the late Dottie West's hit "Lesson In Leaving"). These types of songs are Messina's strength. I'M ALRIGHT is a fine follow-up to Messina's hit debut, with well-chosen material that provides a showcase for her powerful voice. SKU: 1019720

Efil4zaggin/100 Miles And Runnin' [PA] [Remastered]
This contains as bonusmaterial the EP 100 MILES AND RUNNIN'. N.W.A.: Eazy-E, DJ Yella, Dr. Dre and M.C. Ren (rap vocals). Additional personnel: Mike "Crazy Neck" Sims (guitar). Recorded at Audio Achievements, Torrance, California. Includes liner notes by Phyllis Pollack. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Though original NWA member Ice Cube would be well on his way to a successful solo career, Easy E would later pass away from AIDS, and Dr. Dre would be a year or so away from rolling out THE CHRONIC, 1991's NIGGAZ4LIFE is still a terrific collection of street gems. There is no denying the ruggedness of tracks like "Real Niggaz Don't Die," "Alwayz Into Somethin'," and the title track. Having Dr. Dre behind the boards with DJ Yella makes for a slamming combination of energy and grit. Though this album would be NWA's last as a group, it helped NWA strengthen the role the group played in bringing West Coast-style hip-hop to the masses. Some of the other tracks to check out are "Appetite for Destruction," "Real Niggaz," and the comic-sexual "She Swallowed It." NIGGAZ4LIFE is a classic. SKU: 1076180

Wings Over America
Wings: Paul McCartney (vocals, guitar, piano, bass); Denny Laine (vocals, guitar, piano, bass); Jimmy McCullough (guitar, bass, background vocals); Linda McCartney (keyboards, background vocals); Joe English (vocals, drums). Additional personnel: Thadeus Richard (flute, clarinet, saxophone); Howie Casey (saxophone); Steve Howard (trumpet, flugelhorn); Tony Dorsey (trombone). Engineers include: Jack Maxson, Mark Vigars, Tom Walsh. When McCartney formed Wings back in 1971, it was intended to be a touring unit as much as a recording one. After spending the latter half of his time with the Beatles confined to the studio, McCartney was itching to get back onto the road. By the time September 1975 rolled around, Wings' tours had been on the modest side. This latest one would last over a year and take the band around the world. The triple-album WINGS OVER AMERICA was recorded during this time and despite its heft, the performances within contained no filler and were bristling with energy from start to finish. Wings' secret weapon was guitarist Jimmy McCulloch, an underrated musician whose playing lit up the opening medley of "Venus And Mars/Rock Show/Jet" and "Hi Hi Hi." Along with material from a mix of Wings albums, McCartney proudly revisited his past by dusting off latter-day Beatles songs which had previously been studio-only manifestations ("Lady Madonna," "Blackbird"). WINGS OVER AMERICA clearly showed that McCartney was the first Beatle to settle comfortably into touring regularly in addition to dealing well withhis musical past. SKU: 3103821

Best Of The Fabulous Eartha Kitt, The
This collection covers only Eartha Kitt's tenure at Kapp Records, in the late '50s and early '60s. While this may seem a narrow focus considering Kitt's five decades-plus career, most fans consider Kitt's Kapp years to be her artistic high point. Certainly THE BEST OF EARTHA KITT contains Miss Kitt's three most well-known songs, "C'Est Si Bon," "Santa Baby" and the career-defining "I Want To Be Evil." The other 13 songs include some nearly as definitive, like a slinky "My Heart Belongs To Daddy," the dramatic "Shango" and a quirky revision of "Mack the Knife." Kitt's interest in non-traditional music is represented by the proto-world music of "Uska Dara" and "Sholem." There are many Eartha Kitt anthologies, but this is one of the most completely satisfying. SKU: 4122879

Little Touch Of Schmilsson In The Night, A
Time will tell whether Harry Nilsson is remembered most fondly for his songwriting or his singing. Throughout his career, he covered outside material (two of his biggest hits were Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'" and Badfinger's "Without You"), and even devoted an entire album to songs by Randy Newman (NILSSON SINGS NEWMAN). After the rollicking party of NILSSON SCHMILSSON and SON OF SCHMILSSON, he delivered this album. It's a set of pre-rock-era, crooner-styled ballads, lushly arranged and conducted by Gordon Jenkins(who achieved his greatest fame with Frank Sinatra). Nilsson handles the songs with grace and aplomb. He's never cloying or maudlin, and demonstrates a deep understanding of material that clearly influenced much of his early development as an artist. He's a confident interpreter, making standards like "Makin' Whoopee!" and "As Time Goes By" his own. SKU: 1076700

Vintage Violence [Remastered]
Producers: John Cale, Lewis Merenstein. Reissue producer: Bruce Dickinson. Recorded in 1969. Includes liner notes by John Cale. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Considering the darker surface of his former band, the Velvet Underground, John Cale's first solo album at first seems downright sunny. But, as with all of Cale's work, there are contrasts and tensions throughout. Even the album's title seems incongruous when weighed against the pop music contained within. The lyrics offer memorable phrases, but also poke around into dark corners with surreal giddiness. Where the Velvet Underground had an urban grittiness to its music, VINTAGE VIOLENCE sounds positively rural. There's an easy front porch playfulness to the songs, but it's also clear that a significant amount of effort went intotheir composition. This is idiosyncratic but highly engaging folk-rock, and is unlike anything else John Cale has ever made. Though the songs are flavored by instrumentation unique to his catalog, each song bears the inimitable Cale stamp. VINTAGE VIOLENCE is replete with steel guitar and harmonica, as well as Cale's strident classically based piano playing his Welsh-inflected singing. SKU: 1060923

Who Made Who (Film Soundtrack For Maximum Overdrive) [Digipak] [Remastered]
WHO MADE WHO is the soundtrack to Stephen King's "Maximum Overdrive." This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. AC/DC: Brian Johnson (vocals); Angus Young, Malcolm Young (guitar); Cliff Williams (bass); Simon Wright (drums). Producers: Harry Vanda, George Young, Robert John "Mutt" Lange, Angus Young, Malcolm Young. Originally released as Atlantic (81650). Includesliner notes by Bryan Reesman. For those unfamiliar with the boiled-down boogie of this veteran Australian hard rock outfit, WHO MADE WHO will serve as a telling introduction. The album was shuffled out as a soundtrack to a minor mid-'80s movie called "Maximum Overdrive." Despite its pre-packaged feel, it contains some of the group's finer moments of power chord glory. Certainly, "You Shook Me All Night Long" is as catchy a hard rock song as you're likely to hear and perhaps the band's definitive moment. With an absolutely crunching double guitar riff, vocalist Brian Johnson screeches some the band's best adolescent lust fueled couplets. The new material is strong as well, notably the title track, a sturdy single in its own right that went on to become a live staple. Oddly, the album is not merely a greatest hits package as there are obscure and oft-forgotten numbers included as well. "Sink the Pink," from the minor FLY ON THE WALL album is present, as is the out of character "Ride On." The latter, recorded in 1976, is a restrained blues. It's undoubtedly the quietest selection here and quite possibly the most reflective moment in the band's entire catalogue. SKU: 1082944

Roll The Bones [Remastered]
Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, synthesizer, bass); Alex Lifeson (guitar, background vocals); Neil Peart (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Rupert Hine (keyboards, background vocals). Recorded at Le Studio, Morin Heights, Quebec, Canada. Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, synthesizer, bass guitar); Alex Lifeson (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, background vocals); Neil Peart (drums, cymbals). Recording information: 05/1991. Many Rush fans were pleased to see the band return to a more straightforward approach with 1989's PRESTO, and break out of their "synthesizer rut" of the mid-to-late-'80s (after all, Rush had made a name for themselves with technically proficient hard rock). Cut from the same musical cloth istheir follow-up, 1991's ROLL THE BONES, which was the second consecutive Rush release co-produced by the band and Rupert Hine. Easily their most rock-oriented album since 1984's GRACE UNDER PRESSURE, ROLL THE BONES contains several of Rush's best-known tunes from the '90s. The title track is a natural extension of their 1989 single "Show Don't Tell," which boasts more prominent funky rhythms and guitar work, and a surprising "rapped" section in the middle (a first for the band). Another funk-rocker is "Where's My Thing (Part IV, 'Gangster of Boats' Trilogy)," which was Rush's first instrumental since 1981's classic "YYZ." Other highlights include the melodic pop of the album-opener "Dreamline" and a coming-of-age love song, "Ghost of a Chance." Although ROLL THE BONES contains a fair amount of filler, it's one of the better progressive rock albums of the '90s. SKU: 6573297

Best Of Green On Red, The
Full title: The Best Of Green OnRed (Rock 'N' Roll Disease). Not everyone will agree with the title of this posthumous compilation. The album includes nothing from Green on Red's early, neo-psychedelic Paisley Underground days, and most of the songs from such classic albums as 1984's GRAVITY TALKS and 1985's GAS FOOD LODGING, like the mournful country death ballad "16 Ways," are represented by late-period live renditions. THE BEST OF GREEN ON RED focuses on the four records singer/guitarists Dan Stuart and Chuck Prophet recorded as a duo: 1988's HERE COME THE SNAKES, 1989's THIS TIME AROUND, 1991's SCAPEGOATS, and 1993's ironically titled TOO MUCH FUN. Featuring loose, sometimes sloppy playing in the tradition of Crazy Horse, EXILE-era Stones, and the mid-'80s roots rock of friends like the Long Ryders and the Dream Syndicate, these albums are fine slide-guitar-and-organ rock & roll. Lyrics are alternately weepy and defiant, and "Rock and Roll Disease" is a particular gem. SKU: 6415017

Reggae Greats [Remastered]
Black Uhuru: Derrick "Duckie" Simpson, Michael Rose, Puma Jones (vocals). Additional personnel: Robbie Shakespeare (bass); Sly Dunbar (drums). Producers: Black Uhuru, Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Steven Stanley. Includes liner notes by Edwin Pouncey. Duckie Simpson founded his first freedom group (Uhuru means freedom) in 1975, with littlesuccess. When the brilliant music doctors Sly And Robbie became involved, Uhuru's fortunes changed. Most of the cuts on this excellent collection are produced by the dynamic duo, and it shows. That they are such a crucial part of Black Uhuru is a testament to their ability to change the shape and sound of everything they touch. Overwhelmingly good are 'Happiness', 'Push Push' and 'World Is Africa', but the most powerful song in the catalogue is 'Youth Of Eglington'. They observed the troubled times of racial disharmony in Brixton better than most. SKU: 1085150

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome [ECD]
Personnel includes: Kid Koala (turntables). "Abstract hip doodlings" is probably the best way to describe this release on Coldcut's Ninja Tunes label. It's a kind of lo-fi scrapbook of sound, featuring everything from filtered sounds of real instruments to obscure samples of film dialogue. If you're a fan of Andrew Weatherall's work as Two Lone Swordsmen or DJ Shadow and you like the Mo Wax and Grand Royal labels, then this is your bag. With its roots in turntablism and hip-hop, this is the true avant-garde of dance music, but CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME defies anyone to dance to it. That's not to say that it isn't fun--beats, blips and weird samples make a refreshing change from all the dance-by-numbers stuff that is out there. Doubtless it would be great for a long car journey because it keeps you guessing all the way. You really don't know what Kid Koala is going to throw into the mix second by second--here a twisted sound, there a snippet of '50s television dialogue, there a rap sample. This album is a perfect demonstration of thetruly postmodern nature of hip-hop and gets more compelling with each listen. SKU: 1028901

Count Basie Orchestra: Count Basie (piano); Marshal Royal (alto saxophone); Frank Wess (tenor saxophone, flute); Frank Foster, Budd Johnson (tenor saxophone); Charlie Fowlkes (baritone saxophone); Sonny Cohn, Lonnie Johnson, Thad Jones, Snooky Young (trumpet); Henry Coker, Quentin Jackson, Benny Powell (trombone); Freddie Green (guitar); Eddie Jones (bass); Sonny Payne (drums). Producer: Teo Macero. Reissue producer: Phil Schaap. Recorded on July 6 & 7, 1961. Includes liner notes by George T. Simon, Stanley Dance, Aaron Bell and Phil Schaap. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Debra Parkinson (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). A battle of the bands? Not quite--more like a mutual admiration society, with the orchestras of both jazz titans playing together, with The Duke heard on the right of your stereo/headphones, The Count on the left. Ellington's elegance and unique voicings meet Basie's rollicking, blues-based Kansas City swing, and it works gloriously. There's no clutter, each band is focused and they sound great together. This is not the thoughtful, reflective composer side of Ellington (listeners should check out FAR EAST SUITE or BLACK, BROWN & BEIGE for that). The Duke and his band accentuate their swingin', dance-band side, and Basie and company have never sounded as suave and exotic as when playing Billy Strayhorn arrangements. Everyone has a good time, and that joy infuses this album from start to finish. SKU: 6522120

Green Is Blues
Personnel includes: Al Green (vocals); Teenie Hodges (guitar); James Mitchell (saxophone); Wayne Jackson (trumpet); Jack Hale (trombone); Archie Turner, Charles Hodges (keyboards); Leroy Hodges (bass); Al Jackson (drums); Charlie Chalmers, Sandy Rhodes (background vocals). Recorded in Memphis, Tennesee. Originally released on Hi (32055). Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. GREEN IS BLUES is Al Green's debut and was the opening shot of a career that included million-selling records, a run of hits and the unofficial passing of the soul mantle from Otis Redding to Green. Although almost half of BLUES consists of covers, all are tattooed by Al Green'sunique singing style. Smokey Robinson's "My Girl" and The Beatles' "Get Back" both benefit from Green's impassioned phrasing and producer Willie Mitchell's solid horn arrangements. The novice vocalist even manages to inject a degree of desperation into the Box Tops' "The Letter" not found in the original. Green Gospel's influence found its way onto this record in the shape of a testimonial reading of Jerry Butler's "I Stand Accused" and the fascinating introspection of "Gotta Find A New World." The two songs Green had a hand in composing, "Tomorrow's Dream" (co-written with Mitchell) and "Get Back Baby" point the way towards later songwriting successes such as "Tired Of Being Alone." The former is a tight pop number with a percolating bassline whereas the latter is funkier, a la James Brown. SKU: 1008831

Indviduality (Can I Be Me)
Personnel: Rachelle Ferrell (vocals, piano, synthesizer); Johnathan Butler (vocals, guitar); Russ Barnes (vocals); Jef Lee Johnson (acoustic & electric guitars, keyboards, bass); George Duke (acoustic guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, bass); Tony Maiden (guitar); Byron Miller (bass); "Lil" John Roberts, Ricardo Jordan (drums); Lenny Castro (percussion); Lori Perry, Kenny Lattimore (background vocals). Producers: Rachelle Ferrell, George Duke, Jef Lee Johnson. Principally recorded at The Blue Room Studios, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Rachelle Ferrell began as an R&B-tinged jazz singer, lending funk andsoul to highly original takes on jazz standards. On INDIVIDUALITY, the tables are turned, and Ferrell uses her jazz chops in the service of some highly individual-sounding R&B. Unlike R&B artists who try to expand the genre's boundaries from within, Ferrell arrives armed with a highly developed harmonic sense that allows her not just to deconstruct, but to virtually reinvent modern R&B as we know it. In this endeavor, she's aided by some fellow genre-benders, including '70s fusion hero George Duke and harmolodic jazz-funkateer Jef Lee Johnson. Over a soundscape that is unrelentingly percolating and funky but never predictable, Ferrell utilizes both her range and her strong sense of dynamics to invest every tune with unmistakable passion. Perfect Prescription, The
Spacemen 3: Jason (vocals, guitar, organ, Farfisa organ); Sonic Boom (vocals, guitar, organ); Bassman (bass). Additional personnel: Owen John (violin); Alex Green (saxophone); Mick Manning (trumpet); Rosco (percussion). Producers: Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember, Jason Pierce. Reissued several times in various forms since its initial 1987 release, Spacemen 3'ssecond album is a remarkable departure from the band's 1986 debut, SOUND OF CONFUSION. Reduced to a trio (guitarists/keyboardists Pete "Sonic Boom" Kember, Jason "Spaceman" Pierce, and bassist Pete Bassman) following the departure of the first album's drummer, Spacemen 3 makes an asset out of the newfound lack of percussion, giving THE PERFECT PRESCRIPTION a considerably less rock-oriented sound with much more open space in its varied, subtle arrangements. Highlights include one of Spacemen 3's finest cover versions, an extremely long, beautifully lush, violin-accented meditation on the Red Krayola's classic "Transparent Radiation," as well as the foreboding "Take Me to the Other Side." The album title introduces Pierce's pharmaceutical fixation, further developed in later Spacemen 3 album titles and Spiritualized cover art, but this album sounds suitably mind-warping on its own. Breakfast In New Orleans Dinner In Timbuktu
Full title: Breakfast In New Orleans, Dinner In Timbuktu. Personnel includes: Bruce Cockburn (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Lucinda Williams, Margo Timmins, Jonell Mosser (vocals); Daniel Janke (kora); Richard Bell, Janice Powers (keyboards); Ben Riley, Gary Craig (drums). Bruce Cockburn is asold as your mother and twice as much fun. And just like your mother, he will never lie to you. He's an old-school poet, writing from real events, rather than simply fabricating an appealing-sounding set of words. He tones down neither his left-leaning politics nor his steadfast Christianity, certainly alienating some would-be fans from the more extreme ends of both camps. BREAKFAST IN NEW ORLEANS, DINNER IN TIMBUKTU is clearly one of Cockburn's finest among the 20 or so discs he had recorded up to its release. It includes a great acoustic guitar rave-up that's similar to Ralph Towner's more rollicking moments, and there's also a wonderful cover of "Blueberry Hill." Cockburn is St. Valentine; in love with God and in love with love, and like Leonard Cohen says, "ain't no cure for that." SKU: 5060472

On The Corner [Remastered]
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Carlos Garnett (soprano & tenor saxophones); Dave Liebman (soprano saxophone); Bennie Maupin (bass clarinet); Herbie Hancock (Fender Rhodes piano, synthesizer); Chick Corea (Fender Rhodes piano); Harold I. Williams (organ, synthesizer); John McLaughlin, David Creamer (electric guitar); Collin Walcott (electric sitar); Michael Henderson (bass); Jack DeJohnette, Billy Hart, Al Foster (drums); Badal Roy (tablas). Producer: Teo Macero. Reissue producer: Bob Belden. Recorded in New York, New York on June 1 & 6 and July 7, 1972. Includes liner notes by Bob Belden and Dave Liebman. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Mark Wilder (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). ON THE CORNER enjoys a special cult status among musicians, anticipating as it does the punk funk/acid jazz movements. For Miles Davis, ON THE CORNER was another seismic shift. Miles was particularly fond of the lyric sweep of Hendrixian electric guitar, the James Brown-like rhythmic thump of Fender bass, and the bell-like timbre and chordal possibilities of the Fender/Rhodes electric piano. Now the trumpeter sought to incorporate the feel of street rhythms from around the world and to reflect the influence of modern electronic composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen. So while ON THE CORNER is generously populated with top-flight jazz players, Davis was zeroing in on a contemporary approach not beholden to jazz players of jazz rhythmic postures--although group improvisation is still very much the order of the day. In paving the way for his Afro-psychedelic working bands of the mid-70's, Davis was roundly dissed, but ON THE CORNER endures brilliantly--the dark lady of Miles' musical sonnets. The album is a furious carnival of rhythm. The first sectionis dominated by an Afro-Cuban groove, the eerie distortion of Miles' wah-wah trumpet, John McLaughlin's nasty electric leads and a swelter of rhythms--every instrument seemingly transformed into a drum. The second section beginning with "Black Satin" is driven along by a commanding Michael Henderson bass line, a celestial drone of Indian bells, sitars, tablas, congas and handclaps, some skanky Herbie Hancock keyboards, and a skittering Davis solo. Everything Happens To Me
Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Laurindo Almeida (guitar); Antonio Carlos Jobim. Recorded in London, England and Hollywood and Los Angeles, California between December 21, 1960 and April 8, 1981. Includes liner notes by Frank Sinatra, Tina Sinatra and Paul Clemens. In 1995, looking back on his recorded canon, Sinatra, who's always been smart enough to play to his strengths, identified the regretful, melancholy strain of his repertoire as one of the most consistent and rewarding artistic threads. He was, after all, the quintessential "saloon singer," the guy chewing the bartender's ear off ever so eloquently about his broken dreams. With the wisdom age brings, Sinatra beganto appreciate these songs even more in the later years of his life, and decided to grace his fans with this handpicked compilation, representing the darkest nights of the singer's musical soul. Appropriately, EVERYTHING HAPPENS TO ME includes its fair share of latter-day recordings, like "The Gal That Got Away" and the despairing title tune, where Sinatra's angst is informed by a lifetime of experience. His memory is too good to neglect his glorious 1960's gloomfests, though; "Once Upon A Time" and "Put Your Dreams Away" are prime mid-period examples of Sinatra's way with a weeper. Along the way, he employs the lyrics of everyone from Jimmy Webb to Paul McCartney in the interest of expressing the pain that lies hidden in the collective heart of the world as we know it. Teenager Of The Year
Personnel: Frank Black (vocals, guitar); Lyle Workman, Joey Santiago, Morris Tepper (guitar); Eric Drew Feldman (bass, keyboards, synthesizers); Nick Vincent (drums, bass). Producers: Eric Drew Feldman, Al Clay, Frank Black. Recorded at American, Calabasas, California. Frank Black, the anti-fashion rock chameleon, has done it again. Onetime leader of the Pixies, Black has taken his legion of alternative rock fans for another loop on his roller coaster. Thistime, as a self-confessed fan of "Freedom Rock," Black, yet again, is having another funny at the expense of the critics and fans who tried in vain during the 1980s to describe his sound. Black's is a sound that embodies science-fiction fetishism with a good taste of guitar Americana, one that emerged as "alternative rock" then rebirthed itself to find the Pixies disbanded. Black rose from the ashes of Black Francis, the nerd in flannel who whined about his girlfriend in a parking lot, as his own man. TEENAGER OF THE YEAR finds Black hashing out the staples of Freedom Rock with the focus on the right place. Obsessing over what exactly rock in the 1990s is, Black sees the "scheming bohemia," but wraps it in layers of accomplished rock arrangements. What makes Black excel past the confines of the "alternative rock" he crawled out from under is his confidence in pure rock songwriting. Now beyond the lure of being "cutting edge," Black is getting back to his roots of the rock he grew up with, and is not ashamed. Why TEENAGER OF THE YEAR? Possibly, Black realizes that by clipping rock down to its bonsai elements, maybe rock will get real again. There's no harm in tricky Beach Boy-esque harmonies, and none in numerous references to the kitschy devices we clutter our lives with. Black's all-star band makes for a strong album chock full of rock idiom, but devoid of cliche. SKU: 1003778
