Street's Disciple Vol.1 (Parental Advisory) [PA]
Sprawling, epic double set from the self-proclaimed saviour of hip-hop follows 2002's 'God's Son'. On this explicitly political album he launches a vicious tirade on an oppressive system and espouses aspiration and positivity.Critics are hailing this release as some of his best ever work and as a strong contender for hip-hop album of the year. Includes the single 'Bridging The Gap'. SKU: 6567400

Dionne
Personnel includes: Dionne Warwick (vocals); Burt Bacharach (conductor). Recorded between 1963 and 1971. If you have any interest at all in sophisticated pop music, you need to hear this remastered 22-track compilation of Dionne Warwick's original '60s singles written, arranged, and produced by Burt Bacharach with the invaluable lyrical contributions of Hal David. Bacharach and David received a long-overdue critical reappraisal in the mid-to late-'90s, and their work with Warwick's sublime, pure pop voice has regained the status it richly deserves. This 2000 release lacks a few vital pieces, notably Warwick's first Bacharach/David hit, the atypically funky "Don't Make Me Over." But overall, it's an exquisiteintroduction to both one of the finest songwriting teams in pop history and, more importantly, to one of their finest interpreters. SKU: 4124706

9 To 5 And Odd Jobs [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Dolly Parton (vocals); Larry Carlton, Reggie Young, Jeff Baxter, Martin K. Walsh (guitar); Joe McGuffee (steel guitar); Sonny Osborne (banjo, background vocals); Kim S. Hutchincroft (baritone saxophone); Tom Saviano (saxophone); Jerry Hey (trumpet); William Reichenbach (trombone); Larry Knechtel (piano); Gregg Perry (organ); Ron Oates (keyboards); Ian Underwood (synthesizer); Leland Sklar, Abraham Laborial (bass); Eddie Bayers, Richard Schlosser (drums); Lenny Castro (percussion); Bobby Osborne, Anita Ball, Denise Mayanelli (background vocals). Producers: Mike Post, Gregg Perry. Reissue producer: Mike Ragogna. Engineers include: Larry Carlton, Paul Dobbe, Marshall Morgan. Recorded at Audio Media, Nashville, Tennessee & Sound Labs,Hollywood, California. Digitally remastered by Elliott Federman (SAJE Sound, New York, New York). This is part of the Buddah Original Masters Series. Dolly Parton was a crossover superstar when she recorded this album--the infectious title song, which she wrote, was the theme from the movie of the same name, in which she made her acting debut. Not suprisingly, much of the album is chart oriented state-of-the-art early '80s pop fluff, but Parton still finds time to flash her country and folk roots. Standout tracks include a terrific cover of Mel Tillis' "Detroit City," a riveting version of Woody Guthrie's classic migrant worker anthem "Deportee (Plane Wreck at Los Gatos)," a surprisingly fresh take on "House of the Rising Sun," and an impassioned run through of Merle Travis' "Dark As a Dungeon." Get Rich Or Die Tryin' (Special Edition) [ECD] [PA]
Personnel includes: 50 Cent, Eminem, Young Buck, Tony Yayo, Nate Dogg, Lloyd Banks. Producers include: Dr. Dre, Eminem, John Freeman, Red Spyda, Terence Dudley. With its inclusion on the mega-successful 8 MILE soundtrack, 50 Cent's "Wanksta" blew up in late 2002, calling out the hypocrisies of wannabe gangstas who boastof criminal exploits that exist only in their imaginations. If anyone has the right to speak it's 50 Cent; he made his mark in the streets (not to mention newspapers) long before Eminem inked the Queens rapper to his Shady Records. In between the occasional single and album, 50 Cent has been involved in many notorious hip-hop confrontations. The too-aptly titled GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN' (which includes "Wanksta") introduces his brash, talk-it-like-he-walks-it rap style to the world at large. 50 Cent blithely cites the Bible in "Many Men (Wish Death)" while crowing about the rival who famously shot him in 2000 only to be shot himself ("cuz he got hit like I got hit and he ain't...breathin'"). From that slice of ultra-reality, he shifts to the dance-pop anthem "In Da Club." Throughout GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN', 50 Cent presents a strikingly original, raw worldview, even by the well-traveled genre's bleak and violent standards. SKU: 1079904

Sketchbook
Third album by Brighton's graffiti artist/DJ/producer Req and his first for Warp. Influenced byold school hip-hop, Detroit techno and ambient electronica, his minimal, chilled-out breakbeats have been favourably compared to UNKLE, DJ Krush and DJ Shadow. This album is more rounded than his first two and flows more smoothly as a whole. SKU: 1070688

Fear Factory: Burton C. Bell (vocals); Dino Cazares (guitar); Christian Olde Wolbers (bass); Raymond Herrera (drums, percussion). Additional Personnel: Gary Numan (spoken word); El Feroce, Susie Hodge, Walter Creery, Falstaff Fallen, Monty Washington, Coco Collingwood, Narcisso, Pepe Lamoco, Cleo Ledingham, Chelsea Devon (strings); Rhys Fulber (keyboards, programming); DJ Zodak (scratches). Recorded at Mushroom Studios & Armoury Studios, Vancouver, Canada from February to May, 1998. Canada's Fear Factory is part of the '90s industrial metal scene that, unlike its Luddite '70s/'80s forebears, has no qualms about embracing technology (in this case, synths, programming and even a DJ) in the service of their dark, almost gothic vision. On OBSOLETE, the band owes much of its sound to thrash metal, with churning, gut-punching guitar riffs, sore-throat-from-hell vocals and an unrelentingly ominous mood. What separates FearFactory from more traditionally inclined thrashers is their aforementioned incorporation of synths to help set the mood. Guest Rhys Fulber's keyboards function both as ambient pads to help establish atmosphere and as melodic elements, underscoring chord progressions. There's even a string section orchestrating the band's more melodic cuts. Look out for a spoken word appearance from electro-gloom godfather Gary Numan on the highly melodic title track. SKU: 1001148

Dizzy Up The Girl
Goo Goo Dolls: Johnny Rzeznik (vocals, guitar); Robbie Takac (vocals, bass); Mike Malinin (drums). Additional personnel: Tim Pierce (guitar, mandolin); Tommy Keene (guitar); Jamie Muhoberac, Benmont Tench (keyboards); Luis Conte (percussion); Nathan December, Rob Cavallo. "Iris" was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "Black Balloon" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or GroupWith Vocal. On first hearing, the Goo Goo Dolls sound like the Replacements' distant cousins, full of trashy rock bravado tempered by intelligent, often tender lyricism and a penchant for combining ringing acoustic guitars with dirtier sounds for a rich sonic stew. In fact, DIZZY UP THE GIRL finds the Dolls moving further away from the Replacements sound than ever before, with a definite '90s influence to the proceedings. The group's main link to the Replacements (and to Paul Westerberg's main influence, Alex Chilton) is the man-child dichotomy played out over the course of the album. The youthful, energetic spirit that makes DIZZY UP THE GIRL an exciting bit of rock & roll is matched at every step by a world-weariness that gives the jangly alt-rock tunes an air of maturity. Fillmore East - June 1971
Full performer name: Frank Zappa And The Mothers Of Invention. The Mothers Of Invention: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Jim Pons (vocals, bass); Mark Volman, Howard Kaylan (vocals); Ian Underwood (alto saxophone); Don Preston (keyboards, electronics); Aynsley Dunbar (drums). Recorded live at the Fillmore East, New York, New York in June 1971. Digitally remastered by Bob Stone. This live record was recorded with the Flo & Eddie incarnation of the ever-changing Mothers line-up. The vocal duo, who had considerable chart success as the Turtles, parodied their success as "rock stars" here, and Zappa utilized their soul and doo-wop-style vocals for maximum comedic effect. The set works as a comedy record as much as anything else. They perform their huge hit "Happy Together," but it's done as a goof. Mostly what Flo & Eddie do (along with Zappa) is talk over a backbeat like standup comics. Listeners' enjoyment of the record will be directly proportional to their appreciation of funny but gross humor featuring creamed corn, donkeys, hemorrhoids, enchiladas wrapped in pickle sauce, and endless genitalia references. While there are some pieces from previous records ("Peaches En Regalia," and "Willie the Pimp" from HOT RATS) the centerpiece of the record is a loose narrative beginning with "The Mud Shark," a tale of an actualmotel in Seattle where people would fish out the window. Though it could hardly be called a commercial record (even its cover is scrawled in pencil), for some bizarre reason, it made it to the Top 40. SKU: 1017765

Who Sell Out, The [Remastered]
This 1995 reissue of THE WHO SELL OUT includes songs and jingles not available on the original version. The Who: Pete Townshend (vocals, guitar, piano); John Entwistle (vocals, bass); Roger Daltrey (vocals); Keith Moon (drums). Additional personnel: Al Kooper (organ). Producer: Kit Lambert. Reissue producer: Jon Astley. Recorded in 1967& 1968. Originally released on Track (612002/613002). Released in the U.S. on Decca (4950/74950) in 1968. Includes liner notes by Dave Marsh. Only three albums into its recording career, the Who had already begun to distance itself from its proletarian R&B beginnings. Here, songwriter Pete Townshend follows up on the rock-opera idea he had introduced on A QUICK ONE with the extended, multi-part composition "Rael" and would later expand upon with TOMMY. The band had also begun exploring the form of the concept album. The songs are connected by bits of fake radio commercials and brass fanfares, and there's a little of everything thrown into the mix. All-out rockers like the vengeful "I Can See For Miles" vie for the listener's attention with the romantic declarations of "Our Love Was" and the soft, folky "Maryanne With The Shaky Hand" on this impressively eclectic album. Re-load
Metallica: James Hetfield (vocals, guitar); Kirk Hammett (guitar); Jason Newsted (bass); Lars Ulrich (drums). Additional personnel: Marianne Faithfull (vocals); Bernardo Begalli (violin); David Miles (hurdy-gurdy); Jim McGillveray (percussion). Producers: Bob Rock, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich. Recorded at The Plant Studios, Sausilto, California between May 1995 and February 1996 and from July to October 1997. "Fuel" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. "Better Than You" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. When Metallica recorded 1996's LOAD, the studio sessions were fruitful enough for the band to put out two records. A year and a half later, RELOAD is the inevitable follow-up. Stretchingbeyond Metallica's speed metal roots, RELOAD is a continuation of the experimentation that dismayed many old fans and welcomed in many new ones. As a result, many Metallica firsts are reached on their eighth album. Some anomalies include recruiting the legendary Marianne Faithfull to contribute backing vocals on "The Memory Remains" and the addition of hurdy-gurdy and violin to the mix of the wistful "Low Man's Lyric." Throughout all this experimentation, Metallica still plays hard and fast, particularly on the metal groove of "Fuel" and the relentless pounding of "Where The Wild Things Are," (a title borrowed from children's author Maurice Sendak). Metallica continues to reinvent itself in a genre where mediocrity is always just around the corner. SKU: 1002213

Supper
Eleventh album by Bill Callahan under his Smog nom-de-plume. 'Supper' doesn't mark any major shift in Callahan's approach to his music, it's still sparse and mournful but the subject material is less morbid and thefemale backing vocals, combined with faster paced 'rockers' like 'Butterflies Drowned In Wine' add a little more light to the shade. Elvis' Golden Records Vol.5 [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Elvis Presley, J.D. Sumner & The Stamps, Kathy Westmoreland, Myrna Smith, Sherrill Nielson. Producer: Joan Deary. Compilation producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. ELVIS' GOLD RECORDS VOL. 5 is a collection of hits recorded from 1968 to 1977. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Periodically throughout Presley's lifetime, RCA Records would compile Elvis' most recent best-selling records and release them on a GOLDEN RECORDS greatest hits package. VOLUME 5 is the final record in the series, covering Elvis' career from 1967 until his death. During this period, the focus of Elvis' music shifted from youthful, innocent love songs to the more adult themes of loss, betrayal, regret, and loneliness. VOLUME 5 includes numerous examples, including the classics "Suspicious Minds," "Kentucky Rain," and "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me," which was originally a hit for Dusty Springfield. In response to the trend in pop music during the late '60s, Elvis also recorded a number of topical and message songs during this stage of his career, among them "In the Ghetto," "Clean Up Your Own Back Yard," and "If I Can Dream." This package goes a long way toward dispelling the myth that Elvis had little to offer during his final years: the best material here is easily the match of his best earlier work. RCA expanded the original ten-song album to sixteen tracksfor its 1997 reissue. SKU: 1001446

Dru World Order
Dru Hill: Nokio, Sisqo, Scola, Jazz, Woody. Producers include: Nokio, Roundtable, Bryan Michael Cox, Kwame, Sean "Moccaa" Banks. DRU WORLD ORDER is another immaculate collection of smoothly-executed R&B of the type that topped the Billboard charts on Dru Hill's first couple of releases. This third album continues where the band left off--silky smooth vocals and arrangements that ooze out of the speakers like butter, massed harmonies that take no prisoners, and after-hours love ballads such as the provocative "Xstacey Jones" that positively melt the senses. And lest you take them for a mere bunch of love wimps, there's also the tough-minded, Noreaga-assisted "TK" that bangs like the scorching street anthem it undoubtedly is. Mostly though, DRU WORLD ORDER is unapologetically sensual in its exploration of contemporary soul stylings, proving the band ready and able to take ona gangsta rap-saturated R&B market. SKU: 1078325
