Wu-Tang Clan records have always reflected the kaleidoscopic nature of the group itself, which consists of nine members, each with at least three identities of their own. It's no surprise, then, that Wu-Tang albums vibrate with the energy of a raucous crowd, as unpredictable rhymes gust back and forth. The collective of NYC-area rappers banded together as a unit to most effectively launch solo records, with 1993's ENTER THE WU-TANG (36 CHAMBERS) acting as the springboard. While many classic albums have emerged from the pact (including Method Man's TICAL and Ghostface Killah's SUPREME CLIENTELE), when the group comes together, something wonderfully chaotic ensues.
Fittingly, Wu-Tang Clan's first hits record, LEGEND OF THE WU-TANG, has a wandering nature, with remixes thrown in haphazardly, adding to the anything-can-happen feel always surrounding the outfit. The album opens with the three tracks that began its reign, "C.R.E.A.M.," "Method Man," and "Protect Ya Neck," the latter two intriguingly reworked. Elsewhere, two of the unit's finest mid-career singles--"Triumph" and "Gravel Pit"--are placed back-to-back. As a whole, the collection is a reminder of theexcitement and genius that has made the group so enduring.

To the untrained eye, silken-voiced Will Downing may seem merely an R&B journeyman, making solid, soulful records year after year, just on the edge of stardom. However, there has to be more to an artist whose first hit single is an update of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme." And, indeed, EMOTIONS, the singer's tenth album, features a jazz undercurrent (no, not Kenny G "jazz"), sincerely channeling the spirit of Bill Withers and Al Green records past.
EMOTIONS opens with a tender jam (gutsily "for the fellas"), "A Million Ways," which asserts "making love ain't just in the bed." In this chronicle of the simple ways to please a woman, Downing creates such a smooth groove that the complexities of love seem rather basic. Later in the album, he manages to discover a new angle to the oft-covered "Hey There LonelyGirl," his baritone contrasting with the falsetto of the most famous version. Will Downing's been at it for decades, but he shows on EMOTIONS that after all this time, he can still summon up the most sensual recesses of the soul.

Jettisoning the studio bells-and-whistles used by the Mitchell Froom/Tchad Blake production team throughout the '90s, Los Lobos change gears by hooking up with Radiohead/XTC producer John Leckie on GOOD MORNING AZTLAN, the band's 10th full-length album. Named for the mythical birthplace of the Aztecs, this 12-pack of songs draws deeply from Los Lobos' unique mix of rock, R&B, blues, and Mexican folk music. The confusing, complex saga of LOVE IS HELL--initially rejected by the label, then begrudgingly issued as two EPs before it finally saw the light of day as a full album--would be justan interesting footnote if not for the shockingly high quality of the material itself. In between his incarnations as alt-country troubadour and Strokes-friendly garage-rocker, Ryan Adams turned out what just might be the best record of his career. A beautiful, bittersweet journey through heartbreak, it's a ballad-heavy album that bears echoes of Jeff Buckley and Britpop acts from the Smiths to Coldplay. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Smiths producer John Porter is on hand to assist the formerly earthy Americana artist in his transition to fragile, melodic, Anglo-adoring balladeer. While the original EPs were weighty documents in and of themselves, LOVE IS HELL's full-length version bears an even greater emotional impact, as the mood is allowed to establish itself gradually and dramatically, pulling the listener into a very personal world of gorgeously observed romantic tragedy.

By the early '90s, Elvis Costello had forgotten more about songcraft and record production than most musicians would ever learn, earning him titles like "modern-day Gershwin." MIGHTY LIKE A ROSE is where he starts showing off his smarts. It's far and away Elvis' most elaborate effort, both in terms of composition and arrangement, making his collaboration with the Brodsky Quartet sound like a Ramones album. Aided by Mitchell Froom and innovative guitarist Marc Ribot, Costello turns out arty, harmonically sophisticated tunes that never go where you expect them to, either musically or lyrically. Ironically, it's the simplest tunes on what could fairly be called Costello's SERGEANT PEPPER that make the most impact, like the very Leonard Cohen-ish "After the Fall" and the elegant melancholy of the McCartney collaboration "So Like Candy."

BODY AND SOUL expands on the cosmopolitan, Gershwinesque pop sound of its predecessor NIGHT AND DAY. The Latin element is removed in favor of a sound that's equal parts Brill Building and Tin Pan Alley, and the arrangements are more ambitious and orchestral. For the first time since JUMPIN' JIVE, Jackson works a horn section. The horns and Vinnie Zummo's jazzy guitar help take the sound to a new plateau.
For an album this far from rock & roll, BODY AND SOUL is the most unabashedly poppy effort of Jackson's career up to that point. With Ellen Foley chiming in on backing vocals, tuneslike "Happy Ending" could have come from a contemporary Broadway musical. At the same time, the ambitious, almost-instrumental "Heart of Ice" is a sophisticated composition that merges jazz and artsong seamlessly. And as the touching "Be My Number Two" proves, Jackson still had a way with a simple melody and a heartfelt lyric.

In the course of putting together the live Led Zeppelin DVD for 2003 release, Jimmy Page came across some great concert recordings from the band's 1972 stint in California. HOW THE WEST WAS WON is three discs' worth of vintage Zep, far superior to the band's only other live album THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME. Here is the fearsome foursome in all their glory and fury, coming off like crazed rock & roll Vikings on the opening "Immigrant Song," reinventing the blues form on "Heartbreaker," and just plain rocking the doors off the joint on "Rock and Roll" and "Black Dog."
This being 1972, the band had made its journey into the folk-rock realm as well, and come outwith the touching "Going to California" and "That's the Way," the earthy "Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp," and the minstrel-in-the-hills fancy of "Over the Hills and Far Away," all of which are given strong voice here. A 25-minute "Dazed and Confused" and epic-length drum solo on the John Bonham feature "Moby Dick" show that Zep was unafraid to venture into anything they damn well pleased, but the bluesy grit and primal hard-rock crunch of their feel throughout this collection reveals the pure visceral magic of which these '70s icons were capable.

None of Rod Stewart's many self re-inventions has been half-hearted, least of all the full-fledged adoption of the full-on electric rock of 1975's ATLANTIC CROSSING. This album saw Stewart moving past the folk and blues of some of his past work, trading it in for some brash saxophones and jumpy R&B-tinged rhythms. AC features a host of well-known Yank studio cats, including guitarist Steve Cropper (whose contribution was also compositional), producerTom Dowd, and the Memphis Horns, who all lend an able hand in helping Stewart leave his UK roots behind.
The transition at the heart of ATLANTIC CROSSING was a radical musical departure. "Three Time Loser" is a slick rock number, filled with ripping leads, saxophones, and explicit sexual subject matter. From the reggae groove of "Alright For An Hour" to the softer "Slow Half," which features Stewart's version of Crazy Horse's "I Don't Want To Talk About It," ATLANTIC CROSSING catches Rod Stewart as he jumps headlong into another style, one of many directional changes in his ever-continuing journey into legend.

EVERYTHING WENT BLACK was originally released as a stop-gap during a protracted legal skirmish with SST's former distributor, Unicorn Records, which temporarily barred Black Flag from using its own name. As a result, the original two-LP vinyl edition featured only the bandmembers' names for identification.
Featuring live tracks and studio outtakes recorded between 1978 and 1981 with singers KeithMorris (later of the Circle Jerks), Chavo and Dez Cadena, EVERYTHING WENT BLACK is something of a hodgepodge, with several songs repeated by different lineups. Despite its patchwork nature, it's a surprisingly solid and illuminating overview of the band's pre-Rollins years, as they slowly progressed from sloppy Dictators-like goofiness into more streamlined and serious proto-hardcore. The highlight, however, is "Crass Commercialism," a side-long suite of radio ads for Black Flag shows that's a fascinating and often hilarious audio souvenir of the halcyon days of early West Coast punk.

Approaching the new millennium, Marilyn Manson shows himself to be standing squarely at the crossroads of the past and future of popular music. MECHANICAL ANIMALS takes the crunch and shock of '70s glam rock and mates it with the automated pings and electronic sheen of artists such as the Dust Brothers and Danny Saber (who both appear on this album). Manson's knack for going light years beyond Alice Cooper's brand of shock rock starts with the packaging itself. On it, the freaky Floridian appears as an asexual being with flaming red eyes and hair (whose appearance is not unlike a cross between David Bowie's Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs characters).
The music itself not only assaults the senses but a variety of targets as well. Naturally enough, the Religious Right is a convenient whipping boy ("Rock Is Dead"), as are back-stabbers ("Speed Of Pain") and the beast that is the media ("New Model No. 15," "The Dope Show"). When Manson isn't smashing you in the mouth with a crashing wall of guitars and new wavey synths, his instincts lead him into late-Floydian nihilism ("The Speed Of Pain") and hi-NRG ditties tailor-made for an imaginary sci-fi disco ("Posthuman," "I Want To Disappear").

SO ADDICTIVE finds Missy Elliott proving herself a woman to be reckoned with, particularly plainspoken in carnal matters. "One Minute Man" finds the fiesty femme issuing a sexual challenge over a track whose visceral sensuality provides incentive enough to enter into the gambit.
Nevertheless, the rapper proves herself to be more than a sexual cartoon by varying her lyrical and thematic approach. On the percolating "Old School Joint," for example, Missy takes a conventional relationship stance worthy of the song's title, advising her suitor that it's best to "get to know each other" and be friends before becoming lovers. It's this juxtaposition of mindsets that keeps SO ADDICTIVE interesting. On the sonic side, the stop-time sample around which "Step Off" is built bears a distinct Latin flavor, and the infectious, propulsive rhythms of "Whatcha Gon' Do" bear witness to producer Timbaland's knack for nailing a distinctive, memorable sound with a minimum of fuss.
