Okie
Personnel: J.J. Cale (vocals, guitar); Mac Gayden, Reggie Young, Paul Davis, Grady Martin, Harold Bradley (guitar); Weldon Myrick (steel guitar); Billy Pruett (saxophone); George Tidwell (trumpet); Dennis Goode (trombone); Red Spivey, Jerry Smith, Pig Robbins (piano); Beegie Cruzer, Jerry Whitehurst (keyboards); Mike Leech, Tommy Cogbill, Tim Drummond, Joel Green (bass); Kenny Malone, Karl Himmel, Terry Perkins (drums); Farrell Morris (percussion). Engineers include: Joe Mills, Rick Horton, Audie Ashworth. Recorded in Tennessee in 1973. Along with J.J. Cale's debut NATURALLY and his sophomore release REALLY, OKIE completely laid the groundwork for everything Cale was to do inthe decades following its release. The songs are all sturdily built, lyrically succinct, utilize the barest minimum of chords, and are powered by infectious and slinky laid-back grooves. In lesser hands this approach could be indulgent or boring, but Cale is a master songsmith. The almost offhand ease of his music belies the high level of artistry involved. The rhythmic foundation, with drummer Karl Himmel and bassist Joel Green, is the heart and center of the whole album, and consequentially there's a wonderfully unified feel here. This is a collection of beautiful minimalism--there's not an extraneous note or beat anywhere. Among the many memorable songs are the debuts of two Cale classics, "Crying," and "I Got the Same Old Blues." SKU: 1004747

Us [SACD]
Personnel: Peter Gabriel (vocals, flute, harmonica, keyboards, bass, percussion, programming); Daniel Lanois (vocals, guitar, percussion); Ayub Ogada, Richard Maophall, Peter Hamill, Marilyn McFarlane, The Dimitri Pokrovsky Ensemble (vocals); David Rhodes, Leo Nocentelli, Bill Dillon, Gus Isidore (guitar); Richard Evans (mandolin); L. Shankar (violin); Caroline Lavelle (cello); Chris Ormston (bagpipes); Kudsi Erguner (ney flute); Tim Green (tenor saxophone); Reggie Houston (baritone saxophone); Renard Poche (trombone); John Paul Jones (keyboards, bass, surdu); Richard Blair (keyboards, programming); Malcolm Burn (synthesizer); Tony Levin (bass); Manu Katche, Assane Thiam, Babacar Faye, The Babacar Faye Drummers, Daryl Johnson (drums); Hossam Ramzy, Levon Minassian, Manny Elias (percussion); David Bottrill, William Orbit (programming); Doubou N'Diaye Rose (drum loop); The Adzido Drummers (percussion loop). Recorded at Real World Studios, England, Kingway Studios, New Orleans, Louisiana & Studio 2000, Dakar, Senegal. All tracks have been digitally remastered. "Steam" was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Best Rock Vocal Performance, Solo." "Steam" won the 1994 Grammy Award for "Music Video, Short Form." After the worldwide success of 1986's SO, Peter Gabriel produced collections of movie soundtrack music, busied himself with the Amnesty International tour and started his own label. Released in 1992, US was long-awaited to say the least. It was not the commercial smash that SO was; instead it was Gabriel's most personal and introspective work. In the years after SO, Gabriel's marriage broke up and he went into analysis, which he addresses on "Digging in the Dirt." In the past, Gabriel wrote songs in the guise of various characters and invoked epic themes, but here even with exotic rhythms and eclectic influences, Gabriel was grounded in the real world. While lyrically and thematically distinct from SO, parts of US recall its predecessor. "Steam" is strongly reminiscent of "Sledgehammer," while "Love to Be Loved" has a hypnotic pulse reminiscent of SO's seductive beds of rhythm. "Kiss That Frog," with its hip-wiggling beat, is the record's lightest moment. Elsewhere, Gabriel combines gorgeous melodies, poignant vocals and the lush, atmospheric production of Daniel Lanois, especially on the soaring "Come Talk to Me" (sung with Sinead O'Connor), "Blood of Eden" and "Secret World." Viva Roxy Music (Live) [Remastered]
Roxy Music: Bryan Ferry (vocals, keyboards); Phil Manzanera (guitar); Eddie Jobson (violin, keyboards, synthesizer); Andrew Mackay (oboe, saxophone); John Wetton (bass); Paul Thompson (drums). Additional personnel: John Gustafson, Rick Wills, Sal Maida (bass); The Sirens (background vocals). Engineers include: John Punter, Rhett Davies, Bill Pierce. Recorded at the Apollo, Glasgow, Scotland in November 1973; The City Hall, Newcastle, England in November 1974; The Empire Pool, Wembley, England in October 1975. All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. Assembled from three live shows three years apart, VIVA! ROXY MUSIC suffers a little from murky sound, but features uniformly inspired performances. Violinist Edwin Jobson gets his first real chances to shine on "Out of the Blue" (originally appearing on COUNTRY LIFE) and a ten and a half minute version of "If There is Something" (from ROXY MUSIC). "Pyjamarama," the band's second single, ups the funk groove of the original considerably, and to good effect. "Both Ends Burning" comes very close to outstripping the studio version, remaking the song in a faster and more furious mold. The last two tracks, however, are simply stunning. For the first, a version of "In Every Dream Home a Heartache" that doubles the length of the original, the live production is perfect forthe song's sparse desolation. Interestingly, Bryan Ferry's creepy, highly mannered vocal in this song was copied almost exactly a few years later by the vocalists of the Gothic rock movement. The last track, "Do the Strand," comes across as a frenzied locomotive accentuated by Andrew Mackay's saxophone. It also features the band performing brief excerpts of tango and waltz. Not many live albums are as essential as this. SKU: 1025446

Disraeli Gears [Remastered]
The remastered DISRAELI GEARSis also available in its entirety on the 4 disc set THOSE WERE THE DAYS. Cream: Eric Clapton (guitar, vocals); Jack Bruce (bass, vocals, harmonica); Ginger Baker (drums, vocals). Recorded at Atlantic Studios, New York, New York in May 1967. Recorded in the U.S. in a three-and-a-half day flurry of inspired activity before the band members' visas expired, DISRAELI GEARS continued to present the legendary, unprecedented rock power-trio acrobatics pioneered by Cream on their debut FRESH CREAM. The acronymic "SWLABR (She Walked Like a Bearded Rainbow)" for instance, featured some of the band's most fiery instrumental interplay. The album, with its eye-catching day-glo cover, was produced by Felix Pappalardi (who went on to co-found the Cream-inspired Mountain) and once again featured collaborations between singer/bassist Jack Bruce and lyric poet Pete Brown. The Top Five hit "Sunshine Of Your Love," however, was written by Brown and Eric Clapton. That iconic riff-rocker, along with the slinky, bluesy "Strange Brew," and the mythographic, wah-wah stomper "Tales of Brave Ulysses" was a staple of rock radio forever after, making DISRAELI GEARS one of the seminal '60s rock albums. Despite the good humor suggested by the jokey a capella reading of "Mother's Lament," however, all was far from peace and love in the Cream camp at the time, as internal and external pressures broke up the band by the end of 1968. Movements (30th Anniversary Anthology)
The Move includes: Roy Wood, Carl Wayne, Jeff Lynne, Chris "Ace" Kefford, Rick Price, Trevor Burton, Bev Bevan. MOVEMENTS is a 54-song, three-CD set comprising the entire 1967-1970 output of Roy Wood's classic art-pop band. The self-titled first album is nothing but magnificently weird popgems like the "1812 Overture"-quoting "Night of Fear," "Disturbance," and the brilliantly psychedelic "Cherry Blossom Clinic" and "I Can Hear the Grass Grow" interspersed with gentle tunes like "The Girl Outside" and a whacked-out cover of "Zing! Went the Strings of My Heart." A weird mixture of classical influences and proto-metal, the third album, LOOKING ON, is less immediately engaging than the Move's earlier material but repays close listening. The second half of the third CD is a great set of eight covers recorded live at the Marquee, including punky versions of Love's "Stephanie Knows Who" and the Byrds' "So You Want To Be a Rock and Roll Star." 40 Greatest Hits
Personnel includes: Hank Williams (vocals, acoustic guitar); Zeke Turner (guitar); Jerry Byrd (steel guitar). Recorded at Castle Recording Co. and Castle Studios, Nashville, Tennessee between April 21, 1947 and September 23, 1952; Herzog Studios, Cincinnati, Ohio on December 22, 1948 and August 30, 1949. Mastered from the original mono tapes and 78-rpm discs. Those seeking a definitive introduction to Hank Williams Sr.'s music need look no further than 40 GREATEST HITS, a beautifully produced set that includes all but three of Hank's Top 20 hits. All the essential tracks are here, revealing Williams' mastery of both heartbreak songs (for which he, the composer of "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," "Cold, Cold Heart" and numerous other classics, is justly famous) and joyful, upbeatnumbers (such as "Jambalaya," "Hey, Good Lookin'," and "Howling at the Moon"). Unlike many Williams retrospectives, 40 GREATEST HITS abstains from efforts to "improve" Hank's music with such abominations as "enhanced stereo" (a cheesy reprocessing trick that transforms monophonic recordings into poor, echo-laden approximations of stereo) and posthumously added string sections. Instead, the set presents Williams' music in its original monophonic setting. 40 GREATEST HITS is arranged chronologically, allowing listeners to better appreciate the rapid rise and development of country's greatest singer and songwriter. Action Packed (The Best Of The Capitol Years)
Full title: Action Packed: The Best Of The Capitol Years. Personnel includes: Richard Thompson (vocals, guitar, dulcimer, mandolin, hurdy gurdy, accordion, keyboards); Teddy Thompson (guitar, background vocals); Simon Nicol, Tchad Blake (guitar); Lovely Previn, Aly Bain, Tom McConville (fiddle); Alistar Anderson (pipes); Dave McMcKelsy (harmonica); Peter Adams (piano, organ); Mitchell Froom (harmonium, keyboards); Danny Thompson (acoustic bass); Jerry Scheff, Atom Ellis, Richard Gates (bass); Joey Waronker, Dave Mattacks (drums); Alex Acuna, John Bergamont (percussion); Christine Collister, Clive Gregson, Judith Owens (background vocals). Producers: Mitchell Froom, Tchad Blake, Tom Rothrock, Rob Schnapf, Tom Dube. Compilation producers: Cheryl Pawelski, Richard Thompson. Engineers: Tom Rothrock, Rob Schnapf, Tom Dube. Includes liner notes by Rob Bowman. Digitally remastered by Rob McMaster and Tom Rothrock (2001 Capitol Studios). This disc chronicles Richard Thompson's '90s recording career on Capitol Records. Much of the work Thompson did during this period was with producer Mitchell Froom, who adds a slight studio sheen to Thompson's folk-rock sound, but never in an excessive or unwelcome manner. Thompson hadhoned his songwriting and already virtuosic guitar playing to a razor's edge, venturing occasionally into the kind of traditional British folk style favored by his old band Fairport Convention, but also tossing off searing electric leads with disarming ease. The outlaw biker narrative "1952 Vincent Black Lightning" and the bittersweet lost-love lament "Beeswing" showcase Thompson's ability to pen timeless-sounding folk tunes. "I Feel So Good" and "I Misunderstood" find him exercising enough sophisticated pop melodicism and ironic lyricism to rival Elvis Costello. While Thompson's late-'70s/early-'80s work is generally his most celebrated, ACTION PACKED makes it clear that his creativity has never waned. SKU: 1057336

Plateaux Of Mirror (Ambient 2) [Digipak]
Full title: Ambient 2: The Plateaux Of Mirror. Personnel: Brian Eno (various instruments); Harold Budd (piano). After his genre-defining AMBIENT 1: MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS, Brian Eno collaborated with minimalist composer Harold Budd for AMBIENT 2: THE PLATEAUX OF MIRROR, which proved to be a natural pairing. By taking Budd's solo piano compositions and applying his unique sound treatments, Eno managed to enhance a startlingly spare work, yet keep its simplicity intact. On many tracks, Eno's additional sounds are so subtle that they easily mesh with any background noise that may surround the listener. A car driving by in the distance or an airplane flying overhead might fitseamlessly into one of the compositions. Budd's delicate piano work, though, is always at the fore, slowly creating a quiet, yet expansive, sonic landscape. Here both musicians are wholly in their element, making this an album of truly astounding beauty. SKU: 6573276

Box Set, The
KISS: THE BOX SET Standard Edition is packaged with 120-plus color booklet featuring track by track commentary by KISS band members, rare photos and essay. Kiss: Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley (vocals, guitar); Gene Simmons (vocals, bass); Peter Criss (vocals, drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered. The long-rumored and oft-delayed Kiss boxset finally saw the light of day in November of 2001, imaginatively dubbed THE BOX SET. But don't be misled by its run-of-the-mill title, like everything Kiss has ever done, it's completely over the top. Featuring five discs full of hits, overlooked album tracks, and rarities. The set comes in two configurations-- a standard issue box set, and a far more expensive deluxe edition, which comes in a replica guitar case and includes a gold record (both come with a 120 page book with track-by-track commentary and rare photos). Kiss detractors who've never been able to get past the greasepaint, costumes, and bombastic live show should note that the band has penned countless hard rock classics over the years, all of which are here; "Black Diamond," "Rock and Roll All Nite," "Do You Love Me," "Detroit Rock City," "I Love It Loud," and countless others. But the main attraction for longtime fans is the set's abundance of rarities, including demos of "Strutter," "Deuce," "Firehouse," "God of Thunder" (with Paul Stanley on vocals), and "Love Gun." There are also tracks that never saw the light of day on Kiss albums ("Acrobat," "Mad Dog," "Doncha Hesitate," "Bad Bad Lovin'," "Love is Blind"), and pre-Kiss tracks from the various band members. While Kiss's '70s work (discs one through three) far outpaces the other disc of latter-day material in terms of quality, THE BOX SET contains a fine balance of the well known and the obscure. Never A Dull Moment
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Tommy Lee (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Brandon Boyd (vocals); Mike Einziger (guitar); Mixmaster Mike, Z-Trip (turntables). It takes guts to walk away from a band like Motley Crue to go out on your own, especially if you're a drummer. With the exception of the Foo Fighter's Dave Grohl, few have succeeded insuch a scenario. For his second solo album Tommy Lee drops the Methods Of Mayhem tag in favor of his own name and relies less on hype and more on heart for inspiration. Tommy stays rooted in rap metal while adding a more sensitive side, which might be attributed to the turmoil in his personal life. NEVER A DULL MOMENT couldn't be a more appropriate name for this largely autobiographical collection of songs. From "Afterglow" speaking of life's lessons learned to the rap over synth-funk of "Body Architects" which advocates accepting responsibility, Lee seems to have matured. His wild side lingers in the vengeful "Face To Face" and "Higher," a mosh pit anthem, but its pain and loss that fuel most of the album. The tender "Why Is It" asks why we all don't stop to smell the roses, and "Blue" brings out a scream of anguish that speaks louder than any lyric. Lee's remake of David Bowie's "Fame" proves that the notorious rock rebel can still poke fun at himself. SKU: 1073302

Signals
Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, synthesizer, bass); Alex Lifeson (guitar); Neal Peart (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Ben Mink (violin). Recorded at Le Studio, Quebec, Canada between April & July 1982. Making the transition from the heavy-rocking '70s to the synthesizer-driven '80s, the power trio Rush embraced the new technology with open arms. After the 1981 smash album MOVING PICTURES, Rush decided to lead their cult of loyal fans down a slightly different musical route while continuing to maintain their high level of expertise. The result, SIGNALS, was a very unique album for the group and ushered in an era that focused their sound toward keyboard-centered orchestrations and tight, stylized arrangements. The driving opener "Subdivisions" is a powerful depiction of the sometimes bleak outlook of suburban life. The special effects of "Chemistry" andthe shuffling "Digital Man" take on a futuristic slant befitting the group's new synthesizer-based sound. The most creative use of the technology comes with the mysterious "The Weapon," one of the group's darkest compositions. A more typical song is the up-beat "New World Man" which showcases the trio's strengths on top of a sequenced computer track. The grand finally comes with a very realistic description of the launch of NASA's space shuttle on the programmatic "Countdown." SKU: 1003674

Where Were You
Full title: Where Were You? Hen's Teeth & Other Lost Fragments Of Un-Popular Culture Vol. 2. The Mekons include: Tom Greenhalgh (vocals, guitar, piano, synthesizer); Jon Langford (vocals, guitar); Rico Bell (vocals, accordion); Ken Lite, Sarah Corina (vocals, bass); Sally Timms (vocals); Susie Honeyman (fiddle); Steve Goulding (drums). Engineers include: Ian Caple, Brian Pugsley, Tony Bonner. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Along with its companion volume I HAVE BEEN TO HEAVEN AND BACK, 1999's WHERE WERE YOU?: HEN'S TEETHa functions as an even more wide-ranging follow up to 1982's magnificent THE MEKONS STORY. Like that double album, the two volumes of HEN'S TEETH create a secret history of the Mekons by collecting outtakes, rarities and live tracks into one scattershot yet curiously cohesive volume. Focusing more on covers than its companionvolume--Johnny Cash, the Kinks, and Dutch anarchists the Ex are all thus honored--WHERE WERE YOU? also collects early versions of Mekons delights like "Mekons Rock 'n' Roll," "Waltz," and an odd, fascinating dub version of the mordant "1967." Greatest Hits
Queensryche: Geoff Tate (vocals); Chris DeGarmo, Michael Wilton (guitar); Eddie Jackson (bass); Scott Rockenfield (drums). Producers: James Guthrie, Niel Kernon, Peter Collins, James Barton. Compilation producers: David Brown, Cheryl Pawelski. Includes liner notes by Paul Sutter. Digitally remastered by Evren Goknar (2000, Capitol Studios). While popular music trends cycle endlessly, Queensryche has remained a vital force in progressive hard rock music. The band's 20-year musical legacy is explored on GREATEST HITS. There were numerous comparisons to Iron Maiden when Queensryche released its debut EP, and "Queenof the Reich" is evidence that these weren't entirely baseless. "The Lady Wore Black" hints at what was to become the band's trademark sound--describing it as powerfully emotional is an understatement--while the guitar and vocal harmony-driven "Walk in the Shadows" showcases the impressive multi-octave vocal range of frontman Geoff Tate. Unquestionably the defining moment of the band's career, the concept album OPERATION: MINDCRIME featured landmark songwriting, including "I Don't Believe in Love" and "Eyes of a Stranger." Queensryche reached an even wider audience with "Jet City Woman" and "Empire," and got to Number 9 on Billboard with the orchestral, Pink Floyd-influenced "Silent Lucidity." Included from the HEAR IN THE NOW FRONTIER sessions is the mid-tempo "Chasing Blue Skies," while a majestic, full band version of "Someone Else?" rounds out this essential collection. SKU: 1037557

LA Woman
The Doors: Jim Morrison (vocals); Robby Krieger (guitar); Ray Manzarek (piano, keyboards); John Densmore (drums). Additional personnel: Marc Benno (guitar); Jerry Scheff (bass). Recorded at The Doors Workshop, Los Angeles, California. The final Doors album to feature vocalist Jim Morrison reaffirmed the quartet's grasp of blues/rock. Beset by personal and professional problems, they retreatedto a rehearsal room, cast such pressures aside and recorded several of their most memorable compositions. The musicianship is uniformly excellent, the interplay between guitarist Robbie Krieger and keyboard player Ray Manzarek exudes confidence and empathy, while the strength and nuances of Morrison's voice add an unmistakable resonance. His death within weeks of the album's completion inevitably casts a pall over its content, especially the eerie rain and the funereal electric piano of 'Riders On The Storm'. SKU: 1000207

From The Bottom Up
Brownstone: Nichole Gilbert (vocals, percussion); Maxee, Mimi (vocals). Additional personnel includes: Gordon Chambers (vocals, piano); Dewey Browder III, Shawn Lilly (various instruments); Marlon McClain, Torrel "Civil Right" Ruffin (guitar); John Myles O'Brien (guitar, keyboards, programming); Keith Lewis (keyboards, programming); Ida Bodin (acoustic bass); James Strong (electric bass); P. Dennis Mitchell, Eduardo Rickets (percussion); Jorge "G-Man" Corazo (programming). Producers: Jorge "G-Man" Corante, Nichole Gilbert (tracks 1, 8); Dave "Jam" Hall (tracks 2-3); Soulshock, Karlin (track 4); Troy Taylor, Charles Farrar (track 5); Darin Whittington (track 6); Ken Kessie (track 7); John Myles O'Brien, Nichole Gilbert, Jonah (track 9); Gerald Baillergeau (track 10); Dewey Browder III (track 11); Jerry Greenberg, Nichole Gilbert, Gordon Chambers (track 12). Engineers: Keston Wright (tracks 1, 8); Jay Lean (track 4); Ken Kessie (track 7); Charlie Watts (track 12). All songs written or co-written by Nichole Gilbert except "I Can't Tell You Why" (Timothy B./Don Henley/Glenn Frey). Samples include "Spellbound" (as performed by K-Solo), "Kamakazi" (as performed by Prince Jammy) and "The Paycheck" (as performed by James Brown). "If You Love Me" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. If vocals still count for something in today's R&B world, then Brownstone-- and their silky debut on Michael Jackson's MJJ label--are way ahead of the pack. Despite the fact that the shelves are cluttered with female-R&B-vocal-wannabes, Maxee, Mimi and Nicci prove themselves more able than the rest by infusing actual emotionand feeling on each number they perform. Faking it, they're not. The success of Brownstone's first single, "If You Love Me," established them as one of the hottest new groups on the scene. With its smooth R&B-cum-dance feel, the song had the potential to break both in the clubs and on the radio; and the heavy rotation of the video helped them gain quick exposure with a pop audience. Under the same musical supervision as "If You Love Me" (provided by Dave "Jam" Hall), "Grapevyne" unites harmony with a slower tune, while the rest of the cuts feature varying, smoother productions. The songs are all slightly related--mostly in theme--but there is enough variety to keep the listener's interest throughout. "Sometimes Dancin'" has an underlying reggae beat to accent its optimistic chorus ("Sometimes dancin' can make you fall in love"), but the surprise comes when Brownstone illustrate their ability to flip the vocal in a dancehall style, further complementing the song's musical intentions. The ladies rarely work themselves up in a lather, choosing a more subtle path to passionate exchanges. "Party Wit Me," for instance, implores the listener/love-interest to "relax your mind." And while Brownstone's come-ons may be calmer than those of their peers, FROM THE BOTTOM UP is never boring. SKU: 1002009

Dare [Remastered]
1 LP and 1 EP on 1 CD: DARE! (1982)/LOVE AND DANCING EP. It isn't overstating the case to call the Human League's third album synthpop's SGT. PEPPER; not only did DARE! establish synthesizers as a viable musical tool on the US charts, it redefined what people thought of electronic pop. No longer did synth bands have to sound like Kraftwerk or Throbbing Gristle. There are no guitars on DARE! but it's emphatically a pop record. Phil Oakey's gruff vocals blend surprisingly well with the untrained, girlish voices of new backing vocalists Susanne Sulley and Joanne Catherall, and the electronic melodies are expertly rendered by producer Martin Rushent into three-dimensional pop extravaganzas. Musically witty and unfailinglyexciting, tracks like "Love Action," "Open your Heart," "Sound of the Crowd" and of course "Don't You Want Me" are as catchy as pop got in 1981, and darker tracks like "Seconds" and "Do Or Die" add depth. DARE! is a brilliant album even today. SKU: 1079137

Art Of Drowning, The
A.F.I.: Davey Havok (vocals): Jade Puget (guitar): Hunter (bass): Adam Carson (drums). Recorded at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California. "My whole life is a dark room" is the sentiment expressed by AFI on the appropriately titled "The DespairFactor," and there's no denying the uniformly bleak outlook of this young band. If they made music to match, this would be a rather dull ride, but they work the contrast nicely by backing their worrisome lyrics with explosion after sonic explosion of blistering punk. AFI might be said to practice a variant of horrorcore, but not of the stylized, play-acting, Slipknot kind. Rather, the group comes off as a junior branch of the Misfits, mating the grim and the grisly with energetic, old-school punk bashing, and even a fairly conventional melodic sense. For those who think Halloween rock started with Marilyn Manson, THE ART OF DROWNING will provide a quick and infectious history lesson. SKU: 1044172

Asleep In The Back (New Version)
Elbow: Guy Garvey (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, synthesizer, percussion, sound effects); Mark Potter (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); Craig Potter (piano, organ, synthesizer, background vocals); Pete Turner (synthesizer, bass, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Ian Burdge (cello); Francoise Lemoignan (saxophone); Bob Sastri, Nick Coen (brass); Danny Evans (percussion, loops); Ben Hillier (percussion, background vocals). Producers: Danny Evans, Elbow, Ben Hillier, Steve Osborne. Engineers include: Danny Evans, Steve Lloyd, Danton Supple. England's Elbow has been labeled as nouveau prog-rock, but Pink Floyd rarely sounded this radio-friendly. With tracks built on soaring vocals, shimmering guitars, spooky strings, and trance-inducing beats, the group falls more accurately between morose modern balladeers such as Coldplay and Travis and experimental sonic soldiers like Radiohead and early Genesis. They've described their sound as "prog without the solos," which also doesn't do justice to their full-length debut, ASLEEP IN THE BACK, by half. The album is a subtly shifting series of dreamy pop songs with emotionally tortured lyrics. With a voice that veers between the keening falsettos of Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Dave Matthews' raspier end, Garvey mostly hovers over the album's skeletal, floating arrangements. He almost gets lost in the swell of "Newborn," while achieving a hypnotizing strength with the double- and triple-tracked vocals of "Any Day Now," and nearly whispering himself out of the picture on the Floydian "Bitten by the Tailfly." Most of the arrangements hover around the mid-tempo range and the group is not afraid to stretch well past the five-minute mark, allowing thesongs to slowly unfold at their leisure. SKU: 1070053

From Time To Time (The Singles Collection)
Paul Young was one of the '80s' best pop-soul singers, blessed with one of the finest blue-eyed-soul voices since Daryl Hall--whose "Everytime You Go Away" gave the English Young his American breakthrough single--and exquisite, surprising taste in covers. Though more than capableof commanding uptempo work, as on a version of the oft covered "I'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down" second only to Ann Peebles' slinky original, Young's forte is the dramatic ballad. FROM TIME TO TIME's 15 tracks include such gems as "Come Back And Stay," "Everything Must Change," "Broken Man," and a series of superlative covers ranging from Marvin Gaye's "Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)" and the Chi-Lites' "Oh Girl" to Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and Crowded House's "Don't Dream It's Over." While all four albums from which these tracks are drawn are excellent, this is the definitive collection of Young's best work. SKU: 1004675

La Bella Mafia [PA]
Personnel includes: Lil' Kim, Missy Elliot, Styles P, Governor, Twista, Mashonda, Havoc, Shelene Thomas, Full Force, Lil' Shanice, Swizz Beats, Mr. Cheeks, 50 Cent, Big Hill, Reeks, Bunky S.A., Vee, Saint. Producers include: Shaft, Havoc, J. Waxx Garfield, Timbaland, Kayne West. Lil' Kim launched from the Junior M.A.F.I.A. in 1996 with the aptly titled hit HARDCORE, using every bit of the sexuality she possessed in both her raw, tart rhymes and the provocative (and certainly unavoidable) marketing campaign surrounding her, becoming the first female hardcore rapper to go multi-platinum. With her notorious, larger-than-life image, it's easy to forget that the Queen Bee's still got the pipes to back up her undeniable swagger on her third offering LA BELLA MAFIA. Kim's outspoken style is just the thing for belting out boasts like "I'm the real thing,y'all karaoke stars" on "This Is Who I Am" or issuing a song-long threat ("someone's gonna get in your house and put the (click) right in your mouth), the embodiment of a '30s gangster moll, on "This Is a Warning." Her commandeering, overwhelming sexuality is still alive and potent on "The Jump Off" featuring a guest shot by Mr. Cheeks, and she kicks down doors with Missy Elliott on a brazen declaration of self with the catchy "Can You Hear Me Now?"
