Every Other Day At A Time
Liquor Giants: Ward Dotson, Mark McNally (vocals, guitar); Mark McGroarty (vocals, bass); Matt Simon (drums). Additional personnel: Max Ferguson, Brian Kassan (keyboards). Though Liquor Giants frontman Ward Dotson spent the '80s and early '90s first in thearch faux-blues Gun Club and then in the Stonesy Pontiac Brothers, the Liquor Giants are at heart a pop band with roots in mid-'60s England. The group's excellent fourth album, EVERY OTHER DAY AT A TIME, makes that connection plain with one of its two unlisted bonus tracks, a respectful yet wild cover of the Move's classic "Fire Brigade." However, it's Dotson's own songs that stand out. The Stones' influence is refocused toward their circa-1966 pop singles heyday, with the country-tinged "Medicine Ball" sounding like an AFTERMATH outtake. Other touchstones include the Kinks ("It's Raining Butterflies") and most obviously, pre-TOMMY Who, especially on the stunning "It Only Hurts When I Smile" and "Riverdale High." Not since the Flamin Groovies has a band updated the halcyon days of the British Invasion yet remained so contemporary. SKU: 1008459

These Songs For You (Live)
2 LPs on 1 CD: DONNY HATHAWAY (1972)/IN PERFORMANCE (1980) Personnel: Donny Hathaway (vocals, piano, electric keyboard); Cornell Dupree, Phil Upchurch, Mike Howard (guitar); Richard Tee (organ); Willie Weeks (bass instrument); Fred White (drums); Earl DeRouen (congas). Producers: Arif Mardin; Jerry Wexler Compilation Producers: David Nathan; Barry Benson. Recording information: Carnegie Hall, New York City, NY (1971 - 1973); The Bitter End, New York, New York (1971 - 1973); The Troubador, Hollywood, California (1971 - 1973); University Of California, LOs Angeles, California (1971 - 1973). This disc culls cuts from two long-out-of-print live albums by Donny Hathaway (LIVE and IN PERFORMANCE), spotlighting concerts from 1971 and '73, and spices up the pot with a wealth of previously unreleased live material of similar vintage. We get to hear this R&B giant in full flight as he reinvents other people's tunes and lays down smoking versions of his own compositions, backed by a highly sympathetic band that includes heavyweight jazz guitarist Phil Upchurch and Earth, Wind & Fire drummer Fred White. Hathaway's own soul-jazz instrumental "Valdez in the Country" displays the singer/songwriter's impressive keyboard skills, and "Someday We'll All Be Free" highlights his strong gospel influence. The level of soulful emotion and musical invention Hathaway brings to his intense readings of everything from the Beatles' "Yesterday" to Carole King's "You've Got a Friend" is as indicative of his one-of-a-kind gift as his considerable songwriting abilities are. The closer is another bonus interview segment where Hathaway talks about studying Stravinsky's orchestrations and taking composition lessons from jazz legend Yusef Lateef, showing the depth of hisown musical vision. Actual Miles (Greatest Hits)
Personnel: Don Henley (vocals); George Gruel, Danny Kortchmar, Roger Linn, Steve Lukather, Steve Porcaro, Jeff Porcaro, Timothy B. Schmit, Joe Walsh, Mike Campbell, Larry Klein, Martha Davis, David Paich, Patty Smyth, Tim Drummond, Ben Tench, Ian Wallace, Mike Boddicker, Pino Palladino, Michael Fisher, Bruce Hornsby, Wayne Shorter, Jai Winding, John Corey, Bob Glaub, Stan Lynch, Steve Madaio, Take 6, W. Axl Rose, Waddy Wachtel, Carmen Twillie, Julia Waters, Maxine Waters, Vinnie Colaiuta, Sheryl Crow, Neil Stubenhaus, Frank Simes. Producers include: Don Henley, Danny Kortchmar, Greg Ladanyi, Mike Campbell, Bruce Hornsby. Engineers include: Greg Ladanyi, Niko Bolas, Shelly Yakus. Recorded between 1982 and 1995. ACTUAL MILES: HENLEY'S GREATEST HITS features 10 of his solo hits, plus two newrecordings "The Garden Of Allah" and "You Don't Know Me". Every one of once-and-future Eagles vocalist Don Henley's solo hits, plus two new tunes and an overlooked cover version of an old Leonard Cohen songs are included on ACTUAL MILES. One could question the validity of a greatest hits collection that draws from only three solo albums, but with the rampant success of the Eagles' recent reunion, Henley saw fit to compile this retrospective personally. He could have done much worse. The songs still stand up over time, and the thematic sequencing of ACTUAL MILES serves the selection well. The collection also features a pair of previously unrecorded tracks with "The Garden Of Allah" being the more interesting of the two. ACTUAL MILES serves as a decent primer to anyone who wants to hear Henley's hits but wishes to eschew his actual albums. SKU: 1001086

Lie To Me
Personnel: Jonny Lang (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, electric sitar); Dennis Morgan (acoustic guitar); Ted Larsen, Billy Franzee, Kevin Bowe (guitar); Jack Holder (guitar, Hammond B-3 organ); Pat Hayes (harmonica); Art Edmaiston (saxophone, horns); Larry McCabe (trombone, horns); Dedrick Davis (horns); Bruce McCabe (piano, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer piano, Clavinet, keyboards, background vocals); Ricky Peterson, Tony Black (Hammond B-3 organ); TonyBlack (synthesizer); David Smith (bass); Rob Stupka (drums); Steve Potts (drums, percussion); Bekka Bramlett, Marcia Langseth, Heidi Jo, David Z (background vocals). Recorded at Oar Fin Studios, Minneapolis, Minnesota and House Of Blues, Memphis, Tennessee. Nipping at the heels of wiz-kid blues guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd, who debuted at age 18, comes 16-year-old Jonny Lang, the most soulful guitar slinger ever to make it out of junior high school. Lang's debut, much like Shepherd's LEDBETTER HEIGHTS, features a mix of choice covers and co-written originals. But whereas HEIGHTS leans in a Delta-blues direction, Lang's blues has more of an R&B flavor. The Clavinet and Hammond B-3 organ on the title track and "Hit The Ground Running" help give LIE TO ME a funky swagger. As for influences, Lang's choices of Ike Turner's "Matchbox" and Syl Johnson's "Back For A Taste Of Your Love" show a taste for rousing shuffles and Memphis soul. Lang shows his commercial instincts by wrapping up the album with "When I Come To You" and the acoustic "Missing Your Love," two songs that wouldn't sound out of place on a recent Eric Clapton album. "El Farol" won the 2000 Latin Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Fans old and new have much to celebrate about SUPERNATURAL, Carlos Santana's Arista Records debut. After several years of quiet in the studio, Santana is joined by his seasoned contemporary Eric Clapton and by such young luminaries as Lauryn Hill, Dave Matthews, Rob Thomas, and Fher (of famed Mexi-rockers Mana). As an album that caps a rock career spanning more than three decades, SUPERNATURAL is a testament to the stylistic breadth of Carlos' musical world, to his dynamic communicative abilities, and to the fact that rolling stones truly gather no moss. The man continues to make a guitar wail like no other. To the sound of punchy horns, Rodney Holmes' double-bass drum kick, and of course, Santana's searing string-bending, "Yaleo" tears it up with abandon. "Migra" is another signature Santana 'Latin rock' piece with a pulsing Bo Diddley beat and a strong message about the U.S. immigration officers' harassment of Latinos. "Love Of My Life" is a sultry number with Matthews pouring sweetness all over the microphone, while "Do You Like The Way" features Hill dropping the light of SKU: 1017032

Open Up And Bleed
OPEN UP AND BLEED! is a collection of the reformed Stooges' CBS rehearsal tapes from 1973 and live tracks from around the same time. Iggy & The Stooges: Iggy Pop (vocals); James Williamson (guitar); Scott Thurston (piano); Ron Asheton (bass); Scott Asheton (drums). Recorded in 1973. Includes liner notes by Frank Meyer. Digitally remastered by Patrick Beissel & Mike Wolf. Few bands have been re-packaged and re-issued as many times as the legendary and influential Iggy & the Stooges. From 1972-73, the band demoed songs for their next album (the punk classic RAW POWER). While eightof these tracks were perfected and appeared on the final album, many were left unfinished and unused. These leftovers have been issued under different names over the years (some available as imports, others domestically), and more or less contained the same material. Bomp Records' 1995 compilation OPEN UP AND BLEED contained most of these tracks, making it one of the more complete collections of the bunch. Comprised of demos, live material and rehearsals, OPEN UP AND BLEED proves that many of these leftovers were worthwhile. The sound is of varying quality (lo-fi throughout), with the best compositions being the title track, "Johanna," "She Creatures of the Hollywood Hills," "Head On," and "I Got Nothing." With better sonics, the material would easily be on par with the Stooges officially released albums, but by purchasing OPEN UP AND BLEED, you won't need to get another Stooges compilation--nearly all of their best outtakes are here. Between The Buttons (UK Version) [SACD] [Remastered]
This is a Hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both Super Audio and regular CD players. The Rolling Stones: Keith Richards (vocals, guitar); Mick Jagger (vocals); Brian Jones (guitar); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Recorded in 1966. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Once known as hard-core blues/R&B traditionalists, the Stones plunged deeper into the waters of original songwriting on BETWEEN THE BUTTONS, leading to a golden age of classic albums including LET IT BLEED, BEGGAR'S BANQUET and EXILE ON MAIN STREET. In addition to scoring a double-sided smash-hit single in "Let's Spend The Night Together" backed with the baroque-pop "Ruby Tuesday," BUTTONS was also the last album produced by then-manager/svengali Andrew Loog Oldham. More importantly, the obscure songs on this tight package show the Stones coming into theirown as composers. Between the ornate orchestrations of the aforementioned "Ruby Tuesday" and Mick Jagger's Dylanesque inflections on "She Smiled Sweetly," BUTTONS found the Stones in a strata far beyond covering Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly. Although none of these developments ranks with the Beatles' contemporaneous sonic experiments, the fabs' bad-boy counterparts showed differing degrees of whimsy and sass, i.e. Ian Stewart's barrelhouse piano and Brian Jones' kazoo playing on "Cool, Calm & Collected" or the Dixieland-flavored "Something Happened To Me Yesterday." Jaku
Personnel include: DJ Krush; Nobuichi Kinoshita (shamisen); Shuzan Morita (shakuhachi); Akira Sakata (saxophone); Ken Shima (piano); Tetsuro Naito (taiko); Aesop Rock, Mr. Lif. With each subsequent release, DJ Krush refines his turntable artistry in the service of his sophisticated, all-encompassing musical sensibility. Of Krush's many admirable skills, one of the most appealing is his ability to synthesize the contemporary sounds of hip-hop and club music with minimalism, jazz, native "world music" forms, and avant and experimental leanings, melding the whole into a smooth, moody package. JAKU kicks Krush's aesthetic up a notch by incorporating traditional Japanese motifs. From the silhouetted image on the album's cover (which evokes ancient Japanese rice paper drawings) to the presence of shamisen and shakuhachi (note the trip-hop, tea garden sounds of "Beyond Raging Waves," for example), Japanese tradition plays a heavy role on this release. But Krush manages to look forward as he looks back, in part via his postmodern form-splicing (the album ranges from near-balladry-- "Stormy Cloud"--to industrial dirge--"Distant Voices"), and in part by including guests like top-shelf rappers Mr. Lif and Aesop Rock. JAKU continues Krush's mission to bridge East and West, past and future, sonic adventure and accessible listening, creating a global community within the space of a single CD. SKU: 6567360

Sarah Vaughan With Clifford Brown
Personnel: Sarah Vaughan (vocals); Ernie Wilkins (arranger); Paul Quinichette (tenor saxophone); Clifford Brown (trumpet); Herbie Mann (flute); Jimmy Jomes (piano); Joe Benjamin (bass); Roy Haynes (drums). Producer: Bob Shad. Reissue producers: Richard Seidel, Paul Ramey. Recorded December 16 and 18, 1954, in New York. Originally released at Emarcy (36004). Includes liner notes by Michael Bourne. Digitally remastered by Kiyoshi Tokiwa. This album joined the talents of legendary jazz singer Sarah Vaughan with those of 24-year-old wonder-trumpeter Clifford Brown for a December, 1954 released on Mercury Records subsidiary EmArcy. A warm and welcoming hiss washes over this album, giving it a graceful, familiar patina. One feels like a privileged listener let in on an intimate closed session. Brown's playing is sharp and confident throughout, and at times even bears a bit of a racy, histrionic edge. But it is clearly Vaughan who steals the show in this set. The opening and closing strains of "Jim" demonstrate her peerless intonation, as hervoice blends with the rest of the instruments to create a mellifluous whole. On "Lullaby of Birdland," Vaughan wallows around her soupy lower register only seconds before breaking into some bebop maneuvering. It is interesting to listen to what kind of interpretive character her tight vibrato and winsome pitch-modulation bring to standards like "September Song," and the Gershwins' "Embraceable You." This is a thoroughly representative collection from one of jazz's all-time greats. SKU: 6430789
