Little South Of Sanity, A (Live)
Aerosmith: Steven Tyler (vocals, percussion, harmonica); Joe Perry (guitar, lap steel guitar, background vocals);Brad Whitford (guitar); Tom Hamilton (bass); Joey Kramer (drums). Additional personnel: Thom Gimbel, Russ Irwin (keyboards, background vocals). Recorded live between 1993 and 1998. When Aerosmith returned to its original label in the '90s, there were still contractual obligations to Geffen, where they pulled a Lazarus and resurrected their moribund career in the mid-'80s. A LITTLE SOUTH OF SANITY completes the Geffen cycle and unlike most groups who toss together something in order to move on, Aerosmith took great care in compiling this 2-CD live collection that covers more than 25 years. Recorded during tours for GET A GRIP (1993-94) and NINE LIVES (1997-98), this release also marked a reunion with Jack Douglas, the band's producer during their '70s salad days, who helped the boys from Beantown compile the performances on this collection. It becomes readily apparent here that Aerosmith still tore it up live regardless of how many power ballads they unleashed on radio since the late '80s. Of course, the Zippo-waving songs are here in abundance ("Crazy," "Angel") alongside ribald double-entendres ("Falling In Love [Is Hard On The Knees]") and vintage material ("Mama Kin"). If 1978's LIVE BOOTLEG gave us Aerosmith at their ripsnorting peak, then SANITY provides a reflection of a classic band that's aged gracefully without losing any of its spark. SKU: 1002713

Best Of Both Worlds, The
Personnel includes: Jay-Z, R. Kelly (vocals); Devin The Dude, Beanie Sigel, Lil' Kim (rap vocals); Donnie Lyle (guitar, keyboards); Precision (guitar); Rodney East, Kendall Nesbitt (keyboards); Louie "LP" Pimental (bass); Abel Garibaldi, Ian Mereness, Poke, Tone (programming); Shanay Reed (background vocals). Producers include: Megahertz, Poke, Tone, R. Kelly, Charlemagne. Engineers include: Abel Garibaldi, Gimel "Young Guru" Keaton, Poke. What do you get when you combine one of the biggest names in hip-hop with the premier R&B singer of his generation? In the case of R. Kelly and Jay-Z, besides the obvious marketing opportunity, you get an intersection between the two genres that illuminates the strengths of both while simultaneously working on a new paradigm from the middle ground occupied by both artists. "Break up to Make up" isn't the old Stylistics R&B hit, but a new concoction full of Jay-Z's attitude and R. Kelly's vocal power; no looking back for this pair. And with Kelly being one of the original R&B mack daddies, you can be sure that tales of carnal exploits are in no short supply on the appropriately titled THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS. The key here, though, is the way Jay-Z's well-documented lyrical acumen is supported by the melodic twists and turns of Kelly's singing, and how RK's sound isin turn made all the more visceral by his partner's in-your-face approach. Play
Personnel: Moby (vocals, various instruments, samples); Pilar Basso, Reggie Matthews, The Shining Light Gospel Choir (vocals). Includes liner notes by Moby. PLAY was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. "Bodyrock" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. "Natural Blues" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. A marked departure from the sound of his groundbreaking EVERYTHING IS WRONG and his subsequent hard-edged output, PLAY finds Moby charting new territory. Abandoning the breakneck drive of techno punk for looser, groovier structures entrenched in dance-oriented hip-hop brings a whole new feeling to Moby'svast and varied sonic canvas. Several songs, including the hit single "Honey," are distinguished by the appearance of early American field recordings, looped bits of African American spirituals and folk songs culled from the Alan Lomax catalogue. Moby's penchant for complex composition is in evidence here, as layer after layer of keyboard ornamentation, percussive effects, guitar, vocals (Moby sings and also plays all the instruments), and pulsing, echoing beats create a rich, deeply textured tapestry. PLAY shows that Moby's sophisticated sense of sound collage hasn't dulled, and the combination of these wide-ranging sonic experiments with unique historical samples and rootsier, more accessible beats indicates his ever-changing vision as an artist. Story Of The Clash Vol.1, The [Remastered]
Producers include: The Clash, Guy Stevens, Mikey Dread, Lee Perry, Sandy Perlman. Includes liner notes by Albert Transom. Digitally remastered by Ray Staff & Bob Whitney (Whitfield Street Studios, London, England). Though not the definitive anthology that the CLASH ON BROADWAY box is, THE STORY OF THE CLASH is an appealing, if confusing, two-disc compilation of the second World's Greatest Rock & Roll Band. Any collection that draws on the early-to-mid-period recordings of the Clash (as this one does) is bound to be worthwhile, and THE STORY OF THE CLASH sweetens the pot by throwing in somerelative obscurities, like "Armagideon Time" and "Spanish Bombs" along with classics like "London Calling" and "Career Opportunities." The mildly disconcerting aspect of this set is the lack of chronological or thematic order; songs from all phases of the band's career are thrown together in seemingly random fashion, so this doesn't really function as a history of the band. It does, however, put a whole lot of great Clash songs in one place, and you can't go wrong with that. SKU: 1070817

Good Son, The
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: Nick Cave (vocals, piano, organ, harmonica); Mick Harvey (vocals, guitar, bass, vibraphone, percussion); Blixa Bargeld (vocals, guitar); Kid Congo Powers (guitar); Thomas Wydler (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Alexandre Ramirez, Altamir Tea Bueno Salinas, Helena Akiku Imasato, Lea Kalil Sadi (violin); Akira Terazaki, Glauco Masahiru Imasato (viola); Braulio Marques Lima, Christina Manescu (cello); Rolan Wolf (piano); Clovis Trinadade, Rubinho (background vocals). Recorded at Cardan Studios, Sao Paulo, Brazil in October 1989. THE GOOD SON reflected a change in both Cave's art and his life. At the end of the '80s, he moved to Brazil, to distance himself from the drug-addled frenzy of his youth. His search for peace is plainly audible in these songs, which pick up where the most melodic tunes on TENDER PREY left off. Laced with piano, vibraphone and choral backing vocals, songs such as "Foi Na Cruz" and "Lucy" unveil Cave the unabashed romantic, willing to go as far over the top as necessary to prove his emotional commitment to the material. It is this quality that finally puts him on an even keel with the balladeers whose influence he bearsso strongly (Scott Walker, Leonard Cohen, etc.). Despite the lush arrangements, it's not all sweetness and light. Pretty melodies mask untold grief on "The Weeping Song" and "Sorrow's Child." A near-religious transcendence is approached on "The Witness Song." THE GOOD SON is a strange, lovely diversion in the varied career of this complex artist. SKU: 1004872

Live At Newport
LIVE AT NEWPORT contains 8 previously unreleased tracks and an introduction by Peter Yarrow. Recorded live at the Newport Folk Festival, Newport, Rhode Island in 1963, 1964 and 1966. Includes liner notes by Mary Katherine Aldin. Recorded at the 1963, 1964, and 1966 Newport Folk Festivals and released on the 20th anniversary of Ochs' 1976 suicide, LIVE AT NEWPORT is a vital snapshot of Phil Ochs in front of an appreciative audience. (Ironically, Ochs' 1966 album IN CONCERT was in fact recorded in a studio and overdubbed with crowd noise.) It's also a good overview of the first half of Ochs' career, when the singer/songwriter was living in New York and playing topical, often scathingly funny, folk songs. Like his contemporary Richard Farina, Ochs was more of a deadpan satirist thanan angry lecturer, and the absurdity of politics in the '60s shines clearer in tunes like "I Ain't Marchin' Anymore" and "Draft Dodger Rag" than it does in more traditional story songs like "Ballad of Medgar Evers." Eight of these 12 songs are previously unreleased. SKU: 1004150

Take Me As I Am
Personnel: Faith Hill, Larry Stewart (vocals); Don Potter, Bill Watson (acoustic guitar); Brent Mason, Dan Huff (electric guitar); Paul Franklin (steel guitar, dobro); Jerry Douglas (dobro); Stuart Duncan (mandolin, fiddle); Rob Hajacos (fiddle); John Catchings (cello); John Barlow Davis (piano); Bill Cuomo (synthesizer); Edgar Meyer (acoustic bass); Glenn Worf, Michael Rhodes (bass); Lonnie Wilson, Harry Stinson (drums); Terry McMillan (percussion); Karen Staley, Victoria Shaw, Ron Wallace, Cindy Richardson Walker, Mark Luna, Lari White, Mary Ann Kennedy, Pam Rose, Gary Burr (background vocals). Producers: Scott Hendricks, Michael Clute, Gary Burr. Recorded at Woodland Recording Studios, Midtown Tone And Volume, and The Soundshop, Nashville, Tennessee. Listen to this fairy tale. A beautiful homecoming queen who aspires to be a singer leaves her small Mississippi town, arrives in Nashville, releases a debut album, and immediately scores a stream of #1 hits. Well, the story is true. The singer is Faith Hill, direct from a town called Star. On TAKE ME AS I AM, the strawberry-maned, country-thrush exhibits a warm, satin voice, deceptively strong, with a slight, fragile quiver reminiscent of Dolly Parton. She has a liquid, vocal strength similar to that of her idol, Reba McEntire, but devoid of Reba's overwrought vocal gymnastics. From the defiant, teenage-rebel anthem "Wild One" to her brave, countrified remake of Janis Joplin's signature rocker "Piece Of My Heart," Hill stakes out the wide territory between traditional and contemporary country, most notably in the classic-sounding "But I Will." In this impeccably produced (by boyfriend ScottHendricks) album, Faith doesn't shy away from important topics. In "I Would Be Stronger Than That," she tackles domestic violence. Unlike the aggressive tact of Martina McBride's "Independence Day," Faith takes a more reflective stance. With her striking looks, full-bodied vocals, and strong material, TAKE ME AS I AM, poises Faith Hill as the next queen of country music. SKU: 1016975

Whitey Ford Sings The Blues [PA]

Acadhzhanyan, Jacqueline Suzuki (violin); John Wang (viola); Elizabeth Wright (cello); Dante Ross (strings, piano, bass, drums); Geoff Gallegos (tenor saxophone); Todd M. Producers: Dante Ross, John Gamble, Siba-Giba, E. Swift. Engineers include: John Gamble. Includes liner notes by Everlast. "What It's Like" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. The former frontman for House of Pain sheds the hip-hop-only mode and steps out into the world of rock with this release.Tapping into the social structure of rock, Everlast keeps his rap credibility but blesses the skateboard kids with r&r vibes, making a brilliant texture of hip-hop beats and six-string melodies. "What It's Like," the album's first single, enjoyed a much-deserved rise towards the top of the charts. Produced by John Gamble and the SD50, WHITEY FORD contains tracks that offer the lyrical depth and social relevance Everlast has always been known for. Tracks like "Ends," "Praise the Lord" and "Death Comes Callin'" show why Everlast remained on the scene for more than a decade. Guest appearances from Sadat X of Brand Nubian, Bronx Style Bob and Casual, along with interludes from Guru, Prince Paul, and Sen Dog from Cypress Hill keep plenty of flavor flowin' throughout the album. Blue Album
With charges of repetition and failure to keep pace with the standard set on initial releases, Orbital lost some critical standing with THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE and THE ALTOGETHER. 2004's BLUE ALBUM incorporates glitch-hop, big-beat techno, and many of the tricks the duo pioneered in the early 1990s and, as such, may invite some of the same criticism, but BLUE ALBUM is an engaging techno-flavored workthat's melodic as well as danceable. Orbital is at its best on tracks that are either wholly ambient (particularly the beautifully textural, abstract orchestrations of the opener, "Transient") or moody, rhythmic odysseys ("You Lot"). But for every familiar techno revisitation ("Pants"), there are bright moments of innovation (the expansive "One Perfect Sunrise," on which a phased synth- and-vocal interlude is overtaken by a driving backbeat). In truth, Orbital's marriage of soaring melodies, dark atmospherics, and machine-driven beats still packs a punch, and BLUE ALBUM is equally appropriate for big-sound-system rave parties and living-room chill-out sessions. Cheap Thrills [ECD]
CHEAP THRILLS is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar, Synclavier, synthesizers, drum programming); Bobby Martin (vocals, saxophone, keyboards); Ray Collins (vocals); Steve Vai (acoustic & electric guitars); Mike Keneally (guitar, synthesizer, vocals); Ray White, Ike Willis (guitar, vocals); Captain Beefheart (harmonica, vocals); Bunk Gardner (alto & tenor saxophones); Albert Wing (tenor saxophone); Kurt McGettrick (baritone & bass saxophones, contrabass clarinet); Walt Fowler (trumpet, flugelhorn, synthesizer); Bruce Fowler (trombone); Don Preston (piano); Tommy Mars (keyboards, vocals); George Duke, Alan Zavod (keyboards); Scott Thunes (bass, Mini-Moog synthesizer); Chad Wackerman (drums, electronic percussion); Terry Bozzio (drums). Compilation producer: David Greenberg. CHEAP THRILLS serves as a 40-minute introduction to the varied world of Frank Zappa's vast catalog. Drawn froma dozen different releases, most of the tracks are live. However, Zappa used the stage the way other artists use the studio (and the way he used the studio as well)--as a platform for experimentation. He recorded nearly all of his performances and indeed, many of them became cornerstones of assorted albums, when not constituting an album in its entirety. Long before many other acts were even aware of the process, Zappa was refining his approach to live multi-track recording. "Hot Plate Heaven At the Green Hotel" (from the album BROADWAY THE HARD WAY) is one of several fine guitar workouts included here. "Zombie Woof" is a fine testament to both his skills as a bandleader and his ear for hiring impressive players. The earliest song included in this set is "Cheap Thrills" from the 1968 release CRUISING WITH RUBEN & THE JETS. The latest song here is culled from his final tour in the late eighties. SKU: 1001314

Anokha (Talvin Singh Presents Soundz Of The Asian Underground)
Full title: Talvin Singh Presents Anokha: Soundz Of The Asian Underground. This album is a cross-section of some of the dance/drum-and-bass/electronica/beats/ambient sounds coming from young India and those in other countries of Indian decent. The artists featured here mixelectronically oriented sounds and samples of traditional Indian music to create a heady sonic stew that is mesmerizing (even if you're not a dance-dance-dancin' machine). The contribution by State of Bengal, "Chittagong Chill," conjures visions of early 1970s Miles Davis playing with some Indian flutists doing the soundtrack to a film noir spaghetti western movie, with the whole thing mixed by Moby or Goldie. Lelonek's "Kizmet" is a punchy, dizzying drum 'n' bass workout, with driving, precise, relentless beats and sitar and vocal samples. This is a fine sampler for adventurous dance music fans, as well as those who want to get a handle on what's on-the-edge in electronica. SKU: 3108238

In The Sun
Personnel: Jane Monheit (vocals); Ivan Lins (vocals, piano); Alan Broadbent, Vince Mendoza (arranger, conductor); Joel Frahm (tenor saxophone); Tom Harrell (trumpet); Michael Kanan, Kenny Ascher (piano); Rene Toledo (nylon string guitar); Joe Martin, Ron Carter (bass); Rick Montalbano, Kenny Washington (drums); Don Alias (percussion). Recorded between March 19 & June 14, 2002. "Since You've Asked" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards For Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocals. What is it about Jane Monheit that's sufficiently captured public attention to make her a star of the jazz world? Is it her photogenic mug and cheesecake album art, her close-enough-to-Krall style? Or is there just something about the way she tackles well-worn standards ("Some Other Time," "Cheek to Cheek"), more contemporary material ("Love Has No Pride," Judy Collins's "Since You've Asked"), and Brazilian tunes (by the likes of Ivan Lins, who makes a guest appearance on his own "Once I Walked in the Sun," and Vinicius De Moraes) with the same measured grace. Of course, having top-flight jazz musicians like saxman Joel Frahm, basslegend Ron Carter, and trumpet great Tom Harrell on board doesn't hurt matters, and Monheit's own ability to appeal to fans of pop and (presumably) Broadway with her cannily syncretic style seals the deal. Unaccompanied Voice, The (An Acapella Compilation)
Ironically, words cannot do justice to this recording of solo vocal performances. You'll just have to hear THE UNACCOMPANIED VOICE to fully appreciate it. Stripped of any other accompaniment, these exposed voices bring these diverse artistes distinctive personalities to the fore. Richard Buckner sits next to Elliot Sharp, while the Grifters nestle between Damien Jurado and the Danielson Famile. The performances are as diverse as the artists, ranging from the note-perfect Mia Doi Todd to the perfectly nuts Panoply Academy, and from the sincerity of Songs: Ohia to the sincerely disturbing Nikki McClure. Many of these performances are straight up traditional, while others, like Jarboe's wall of dissonance, must surely bring a smile to the spirits of avant-garde composers Gyorgy Lygeti and Krzysztof Penderecki. However, the real shocker here is an appearance by the baffling Houston-based outsider artist Jandek. In what must be his only non-Corwood Industries recording, Jandek turns in an "Om" as sincere as a Buddhistmonk. SKU: 1038724

Greatest Hits Vol.1
wNOTES: Personnel: Alan Jackson (vocals); Bruce Watkins, Jimmy Capps (acoustic guitar); Brent Mason (acoustic & electric guitars, 6-string electric bass); Keith Stegall (acoustic guitar, piano, background vocals); Robbie Flint (acoustic slide & steel guitars); Steve Gibson (electric guitar); Paul Franklin, Weldon Myrick (steel guitar); Stuart Duncan, Rob Hajacos, Larry Franklin, Mark McClurg (fiddle); Jo-El Sonnier (accordion); Hargus "Pig" Robbins (piano); Roy Huskey, Jr. (acoustic & electric basses); Glenn Worf, Larry Paxton, Dave Pomeroy, Michael Rhodes, Roger Wills (electric bass); Harold Bradley (6-string bass); Eddie Bayers (drums); Bruce Rutherford (drums, background vocals); John Kelton (programming); John Wesley Ryles, Denny Henson (background vocals). Producers: Keith Stegall (tracks 1-3, 5, 7, 9-10, 12, 15, 19); Scott Hendricks, Keith Stegall (tracks 4, 6, 8, 11, 13-14, 16-18, 20). Engineers: Bill Deaton, Chris Hammond, Scott Hendricks, John Kelton, Gary Laney. Recorded between June 26, 1989 and May 31, 1995. Includes liner notes by Alan Jackson. With twenty songs (two of them newly recorded) and more than an hour of playing time, THE GREATEST HITS COLLECTION is particularly generous by Nashville standards, and it shows off how easily this blonde-haired honky-tonk hero can wear a variety of country hats. Included are a few songs from each of Jackson's four hit albums, and they range from the waltzing regret of "(Who Says) You Can't Have It All" and the stately, vintage balladry of "I'd Love You All Over Again," to the jangly country-rock of "Gone Country" and flat-out barn-burners like "Chattahoochee." Jackson has a magnificent voice that registers halfway between George Jones' low drawl and Dwight Yoakam's nasally impudent twang, and he's comfortable in either of his predecessors' milieus. The proof is in the cover songs--Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues" is pure Yoakam country, and "Tall, Tall Trees" isa great, early Jones/Roger Miller collaboration. But Jackson wrote most of these tunes himself, and one of his amazing achievements is that he's been able to build a formidable catalog of honky-tonk-related stuff with hardly any references to moonshine or any other kind of wet stuff. "She's Got The Rhythm (And I Got The Blues)" is the token drinking song here, and its presence only makes the absence of them in the Jackson ouevre that much clearer. He may be a slave to the honky-tonk spirit, but he's not addicted to the music's vices. SKU: 1003888
