Paranoid
Black Sabbath: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Tony Iommi (guitar); Terry "Geezer" Butler (bass); Bill Ward (drums). The murderous riff on which the title track hinges set the tone for this bruising album. Doom, death and destruction are Black Sabbath's staple diet, which they devour with numbing intensity. Repetition is at the heart of the album, sustained chords and ponderous bass often slowing tempos to crawling pace until, on "War Pigs," they groan with suffocation. Guitarist Tony Iommi punctuates the sound with simple but lengthy solos, leaving vocalist Ozzy Osbourne to inject a sly cockiness. Pretenders have often grasped at their crown, butPARANOID shows that Black Sabbath remain the quintessential heavy metal band. SKU: 1043369

Definitive Lester Young, The (Ken Burns Jazz)
Personnel includes: Lester Young (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Billie Holiday (vocals); Marshal Royal (alto saxophone); Frank Foster, Frank Wess (tenor saxophone); Charlie Fowlkes (baritone saxophone); Buck Clayton, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Roy Eldridge, Thad Jones (trumpet); Eddie Durham (trombone, guitar); Benny Morton (trombone); Buster Bailey (clarinet); Count Basie, Teddy Wilson, Johnny Guarnieri, Nat "King" Cole, Dodo Marmarosa (piano); Freddie Green (guitar); Walter Page, Slam Stewart, Red Callender (bass); Jo Jones, Sid Catlett, Buddy Rich (drums). Compilation producers: Ben Young, Richard Seidel. Recorded between 1936 and 1957. Includes liner notes by Francis Davis. Digitally remastered by Kevin Reeves (Universal Mastering Studios-East). This is part of the Verve Records Ken Burns JAZZ series. Tenor sax icon Lester Young was dubbed "Pres," short for President, by singer Billie Holiday, as a term of not only affection, but also as a tribute to Young's unique influence in the jazz world. Young was the first saxophonist to deviate from Coleman Hawkins' bold, big-toned, breathy, hot approach, opting instead for a light, transparent, cool tone. He sacrificed nothing in terms of swing, and his inventiveness turned the jazz world upside down. This collection is one of the most comprehensive collections ever of Young's work, covering his big band years with Count Basie, as an accompanist for Billie Holiday, and his later solo career. There's the jaunty swing of "Honeysuckle Rose," the mad swing-dance abandon of "Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie," where Young anticipates the R&B/rock & roll school of saxophone playing, and the lush, tender romanticism of "Polka Dots andMoonbeams." The latter tune is from a 1950s reunion with the Basie big band, a beautiful example of ballad playing that gives lie to the notion that Lester Young's talent had somewhat declined towards the end of his life. This collection is an ideal overview of an American musical colossus. SKU: 1050219

Landed
Can: Michael Karoli (vocals, guitar, violin); Irmin Schmidt (vocals, keyboards); Holger Czukay (vocals, bass); Jaki Liebezeit (woodwinds, drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Olaf Kubler (tenor saxophone). Recorded at Inner Space Studio, Weilerswist, Germany in 1975. 1975's LANDED is among the most controversial titles in the hefty Can catalog. Opinion varies as to whether it is the last great Can album or a dismal failure that represents the beginning of the end for the legendary German band. The fact is that LANDED is both. And, no matter how you feel, LANDED is too complex an album to submit to such a simplistic good/bad dichotomy. LANDED can't be dismissed offhand, if only because the album directly follows Can's high-water mark, SOON OVER BABALUMA. Such tracks as "Half Past One" and "Red Hot Indians" repeat BABALUMA's electrifying recombination of pan-cultural rhythms and ethnic flavors but suffer from a lack of definition. A prog-rock mentality creeps into LANDED, manifested with such telltale symptoms as showy musicianship ("Vernal Equinox"), odd keyboard fills, and overly glossy production. But there's excellent material here. The closing "Unfinished" explores an impressivecomposite soundscape reminiscent of Teutonic contemporaries Faust. "Vernal Equinox" scales multiple peaks between its excesses. "Full Moon on the Highway" and "Hunters and Collectors" bristle with eccentric pop flourishes. The album as a whole may be uneven, but LANDED is still unmistakably Can. SKU: 1018231

Beneath This Gruff Exterior
Personnel: John Hiatt (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Sonny Landreth (electric & slide guitars, dobro, background vocals); Dave Ranson (bass); Kenneth Blevins (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Bobby Keys (baritone saxophone). Recorded at Blackbird Studios, Berry Hill, Tennessee. "Some people call it depression and I call it a song." That simple observation from "Uncommon Connection," the rollickingly catchy opening track of songwriter/singer John Hiatt's 2003 release BENEATH THIS GRUFF EXTERIOR, sums it up quite sweetly. Hiatt's been channeling glorious depression through the muse since the early '70s. This release marks his first release with the Goners, a four-man outfit specializing in bar-soaked Southern blues-rockin' highlighted by the virtuoso slide guitar work of occasional Hiatt collaborator Sonny Landreth. From the aforementioned opening track, GRUFF EXTERIOR is nothing if not exhilarating fun, a collection of songs seemingly shorter than the four minutes they generally run, as rife with hooks as with wry reflection. There's an endearing ease in mournfully sweet songs of unadorned rambler philosophy like "Window On The World" and "Missing Pieces" with its Dylanesque harmonica opening and lightly Zen opening lines "I spent all day staring at a leaf/I know that my time here is brief." By the final track, the country jilted-lover waltz "The Most Unoriginal Sin," it is clear Hiatt's found a nice groovein which to settle his deft, expertly crafted songwriting. SKU: 1083278

Quote Unquote Vol.2 (Sixties Interviews)
This is the second volume of interviews with The Beatles and Brian Epstein recorded while on tour in Australia and Japan from 1964 to 1965. Includes liner notes by Michael Heatley. The Beatles' impact on popular music is inestimable. They changed the face of rock & roll, introducing new concepts and techniques again and again throughout their career, influencing both their contemporaries and the next several generations of rock & roll. In the early '60s, when the golden age of Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis had given way to prefabricated teen idols and bland, diluted versions of real rock & roll and R&B, the Beatles' brash, effervescent blend of '50s vintage sounds and bold, electric pop saved the world. Not content with reviving rock & roll almost single-handedly, the Beatles continued to innovate. Borrowing a bit from John Lennon's hero Bob Dylan, they pioneered the progression from generic love songs to more personalized, introspective subject matter. Let loose in the studio, they were among the first in the pop world to use backwards tapes, feedback and exotic instrumentation (George Harrison's well-documented love affair with Indianmusic inspired a thousand sitar-infested pop tunes). Lennon & McCartney (and occasionally Harrison) were phenomenally gifted tunesmiths who merged a pre-rock harmonic vocabulary with R&B influences and a visionary streak to create a timeless body of work. Two Years On
The Bee Gees: Maurice Gibb, Robin Gibb, Barry Gibb (vocals). The uninitiated will recognize this album chiefly for its inclusion of the hit "Lonely Days." While that song, with it's dramatic shifts in mood and rhythm, is one of the Gibbs' most unique compositions, its only part of the story on 2 YEARS ON. This 1971 recording finds the Bee Gees in something of a transitional period. They were coming out of their early Beatles-influenced influenced period, and beginning to incorporate other influences and styles. "Tell Me Why" is a timeless-sounding ballad that any saloon singer could sink their teeth into. The grinding rock rhythms of "Every Second, Every Minute" and the percolating groove of "Lay ItOn Me" (featuring a rare lead vocal by Maurice) further demonstrate the range the band was exploring. On both the performance and composition fronts, 2 YEARS on is one of the strongest efforts of the Bee Gees' early career. SKU: 1002670

Power In Numbers [PA]
Jurassic 5: Chali 2NA, Cut Chemist, Marc 7, Zaakir (Soup), Akil, Nu-Mark. Additional personnel: Nelly Furtado, Big Daddy Kane, Percy P., JuJu, Kool Keith. Producers: Cut Chemist, DJ Nu-Mark, JuJu, SA-RA. The chorus of "What's Golden," the first single from rap collective Jurassic 5's second record POWER IN NUMBERS, talks of going "back to the days of yes y'allin" and "holding on to what's golden." "A Day at the Races" features shout-outs to Kool G Rap and Kool Moe Dee while Big Daddy Kane guest raps. This gives a hint of merely one side of a band that embraces and embodoes the old school while infusing it with bits of all that's come since. J5 contains four DJs and two MCs, and the many cooks, far from spoiling the Jurassic stew, allow for many different perspectives and the fullest of sounds. On their 2000 debut QUALITY CONTROL, J5 had to contend with over five years of expectations fueled by touring and heightened by a hailed 1997 EP, yet released a solid, if not earthshaking record. With POWERIN NUMBERS, the hip-hop sextet hits its stride, both lyrically and musically. The four starkly different voices layer richly textured stories, piling one on top of the other, dissolving into a mosaic, an MC battle revealing another piece of the ongoing story of life. Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence
Glassjaw: Daryl Palumbo (vocals); Beck, Todd N. Weinstock (guitar); Manuel Ragoonanan Carrero (bass); Sammy Siegler (drums). Recorded at Indigo Ranch, Malibu, California. Aside from their lack of long hair, large shorts or spandex, Glassjaw could never be your typical metal band thanks to the distinctive vocals of singer Daryl Palumbo. On their debut album he swoops from roar to falsetto in the blink of a verse. EVERYTHING YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT SILENCE is a startling debut release from such a young band. Despite being signed to Roadrunner, Glassjaw tread a path more hardcore than metal. They exhibit a gift for welding fantastic melodic passages with crushingly heavy bursts of musical angst such as on the intense "When One EightBecomes Two Zeros" or the almost poppy "Ry Ry's Song." The unique vocals are more akin to Jeff Buckley or Radiohead rather than Korn or Limp Bizkit. EYEWTKAS is a personal album dripping with anger and self-loathing. Difficult to categorise and impossible to provide comparisons, it is all the stronger for its individuality. This is a refreshing and challenging release that should mark the start of great things for Glassjaw. SKU: 1032698

She's So Unusual [Remastered]
Also available in a 3-pack with TRUE COLORS and HAT FULL OF STARS. Personnel: Cyndi Lauper (vocals); Eric Bazilian (guitar, saxophone, bass, background vocals); Neil Jason (guitar, bass); Rick De Fonzo, William Wittman (guitar); Rob Hyman (keyboards, background vocals); Peter Wood, Richard Termini (synthesizer); Anton Fig (drums); Maeretha Stewart, Dianne Wilson, Krystal Davis, Ellie Greenwich, Jules Shear (background vocals). Recorded at the Record Plant, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Amy Linden. Once the orange-haired Lauper dropped the contrived, dumb, cutesy, lispy broad persona, Cyndi Lauper was seen as a credible artist, and has subsequently become highly respected as a terrific songwriter. On this, her pen was sharpened with the magnificent song of unconditional love, "Time After Time," a track that has since been recorded by others, including beautiful cover versions by Miles Davis and the jazz husband-and-wife duo, Tuck And Patti. Less sophisticated, but of equal fun, is "She Bop," and then there are well-chosen covers such as Jules Shear's "All Through The Night" and Prince's "When You Were Mine." SKU: 1052355

New Day At Midnight, A
Personnel includes: David Gray (various instruments); McClune (various instruments); Tim Bradshaw (electric guitar, lap steel, piano, Wurlitzer piano, synthesizer); B.J. Cole (pedal steel); Rob Malone (bass); Tony Shanaghan (background vocals); Wrecking Crew Orchestra, Wrecking Crew Quartet, Wrecking Crew Brass Quintet. Welsh singer-songwriter David Gray's story is the classic one of the overnight success that took years to happen. He started out in the mid-'90s as an acoustic-oriented folk-rock performer whose approach was heavily influenced by Van Morrison and Bob Dylan. Several fine-but-ignored albums passed before he reinvented himself via electronica-flavored production techniques to unprecedented success with 1999's WHITE LADDER. Three years later, the highly anticipated follow-up A NEW DAY AT MIDNIGHT boasts production that pretty much picksup where its famed predecessor left off, but this time around the blend of electronic and organic textures is even more deft. Loops, synths, and electronic effects mix seamlessly with acoustic piano and guitar and of course, Gray's rough-hewn vocal style. But the understated elegance of Gray's tunes and the conviction of his performances is even more handily underscored here than on WHITE LADDER. SKU: 1076678

Cut Above, A
Personnel: June Tabor (vocals); Martin Simpson (guitar); Ric Saunders (violin); Dave Bristow (piano, synthesizer); Jon Davie (bass). Additional personnel: Louisa Livingstone, Dik Cadbury. Recorded at Millstream Studios, Cheltenham. June Tabor's collaborations tend to be a bit more lighthearted than her usually somber solo records--think of the aptly-named SILLY SISTERS records with Maddy Prior--and 1989's A CUT ABOVE is no exception. Guitarist Martin Simpson hadrecorded with Tabor before, appearing on her ABYSSINIANS and AQABA albums, but he takes a more active compositional and musical role here, co-writing many of the songs with Tabor. Simpson's guitar is the key musical element, with the delicate backing of Ric Saunders' violin, Dave Bristow's keyboards and Jon Davies's bass providing occasional and subtle support. As always, however, Tabor's brilliant, bell-toned voice is the immediate and eternal focal point of these 10 songs. Highlights include the sprightly opener "Admiral Benbow" and the chilling coal-mining ballad "Number Two Top Seam," which Tabor performs unaccompanied. Not one of Tabor's best-known albums, A CUT ABOVE does more than live up to its title. SKU: 1015879

Something For Everybody [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Elvis Presley, the Jordanaires. Compilation producers: Ernst Mikael Jorgensen,Roger Semon. Includes liner notes by Colin Escott. Digitally remastered by Dennis Ferrante. This is the third album Elvis recorded after he got out of the Army, and though he could still rock (though not with the wild abandon of the Sun-era recordings, his voice had changed. Elvis sang ballads with greater depth and maturity, and on the rockers he sounded less wild but even more confident and worldly. "Surrender" is an Italian pop-flavored ballad in which Elvis reaches near-operatic heights. "His Latest Flame" is a great snappy-but-sad mid-tempo rocker, but on "Little Sister" he pulls out the stops and gives a killer blues-tinged swaggering performance. There's Chuck Willis's blues hit (1954) "I Feel So Bad" and some early forays into country, such as the cry-in-your-beer (but with dignity) "Starting Today." Truly an aptly-title album. SKU: 1017273

I Fell In Love
Personnel: Carlene Carter (vocals, autoharp); Albert Lee (acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin, piano); Howie Epstein (acoustic guitar, banjo, background vocals); Bob Metzger, James Burton (acoustic guitar, dobro); Frank Reckard (acoustic guitar); Steve Fishell (slide guitar); Jay Dee Maness (pedal steel guitar); Doug Atwell (fiddle); Eddie Baytos, Phil Parlapiano (accordion); Phil Kensey (saxophone); Lee Thornburg (trumpet); Benmont Tench (piano, organ); Barry Goldberg (piano); John Ciambotti (bass); Ed Greene (drums, percussion); Jim Keltner (drums); Dave Edmunds, Jim Lauderdale, Levon Helm, Jim Photoglo, Kevin Welch, Keith Knudsen, Vince Melamed, June Carter Cash, Nicolette Larson, Robert Ellis Orrall, Kiki Dee (background vocals). The curse of Carlene Carter's career is that every review brings up herheritage--granddaughter of Mother Maybelle, daughter of June Carter and Carl Smith, stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, half-sister of Roseanne Cash, ex-wife of Nick Lowe--before discussing her own (innumerable) qualifications. In her on-again, off-again career--three albums in the late '70s, three in the early '90s--Carter has proven herself time and again as one of the most fiercely talented country-rockers around. I FELL IN LOVE, the first of those '90s albums, is a masterpiece of the style, mixing Sun-style rockabilly ("One Love"), British Invasion pop ("Come On Back"), accordion-led honky-tonk ("Goodnight Dallas") and, most affectingly, Carter Family-style bluegrass on the beautiful homage to her grandmother, "Me and the Wildwood Rose." Remarkably, the different styles blend as if they're one. I FELL IN LOVE is an absolute stunner. SKU: 1002121

From Dusk Till Dawn
The soundtrack to FROM DUSK TILL DAWN includes 11 songs, two pieces of score music, and dialogueperformed by George Clooney, Juliette Lewis, Quentin Tarantino, Cheech Marin and Tom Savini. Original score written by Graeme Revell. All dialogue written by Quentin Tarantino. Like his acclaimed PULP FICTION soundtrack, Quentin Tarantino's eclectic fingerprints are all over the appealing collection of tunes from his celluloid colaboration with Robert Rodriguez, the horrorsploitation epic, FROM DUSK TILL DAWN. With brief, witty movie dialogue interspersed throughout, the songs here are a combination of new and classic (though often lesser-known) efforts by Jimmy Vaughan, ZZ Top, The Blasters, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, and other purveyors of rollicking roots rock and heartfelt blues. Highlights include Jimmy Vaughan's inspired "Dengue Woman Blues," brother Stevie Ray's always pleasing "Willie The Wimp," The Blasters' "Dark Night" and ZZ Top's "She's Just Killing Me." A surprising solid and cohesive soundtrack, FROM DUSK TILL DAWN was made to be a good, old-fashioned party record. SKU: 1016920

Wow Gospel 2004 (30 Of The Year's Top Gospel Artists And Songs)
Compilation producers: Joseph Burney, Ken Pennell, Desmond Pringle. Due to its consistently best-selling status, the WOW series has become synonymous with cutting-edge hit gospel and Christian music. WOW GOSPEL 2004 is no different, and opens appropriately enough with "Brighter Day," a gloriously booty-shaking live track from Kirk Franklin, the man perhaps most responsible forbringing contemporary gospel to mainstream R&B audiences. Many other definitive modern acts are also here, including Hezekiah Walker, who turns in the stirring and anthemic ballad "I Need You to Survive," and the Reverend John P. Kee, who gets back to basics with the foot-stomping "I Won't Let Go." One of the best performances on the set, however, comes from relative newcomer Smokie Norful, who sounds at times like that other great flammably sobriqueted soul man, Smokey Robinson. Unlike some forms of religious music, the tracks here are marked by a level of energy and excitement equal to, or greater than, anything in the secular world. Those wishing to sample some of the most exciting and passionate gospel music of 2004 need look no further than the heavenly sounds of this WOW GOSPEL edition. SKU: 6567847

Mission Impossible (Music From & Inspired By Mission Impossible)
Full title: Music From And Inspired By The Motion Picture Mission: Impossible. Danny Elfman's "Impossible Mission," "Claire" and "Trouble" also appear on the original score album MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE (Point Music 454 525). Producers include: Larry Mullen, Nellee Hooper, Massive Attack, Chris Thomas, Howie B. Engineers include: David Beal, Dan Gellert, Shawn Murphy. Larry Mullen & Adam Clayton's performance of "Theme From Mission: Impossible" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Everything old is new again, and the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE soundtrack is no exception. Scattered amid Danny Elfman's trademark instrumental orchestrations are a smorgasbord of tracks featuring retreads and retro styles. Most notably, the album starts and ends with remakes of the theme song from the original TV series, by Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen, Jr. of U2. Theirs are big-band, fuzz-guitar, dubby techno takes on the famed song (in an altered meter, to boot). Other notables here include "I Spy," in which Pulp turns itself into a lounge act; "No Government" by Nicolette, who sounds like a modern ShirleyBassey; and the dub-reggae swirl of Massive Attack's "Spying Glass." To their credit, the people behind the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE film franchise decided to give each installment a distinct style, which is why the John Woo-directed second film is far more poetic and noir-ish than Brian DePalma's original. It's also why the songs on the two soundtrack albums are so different. The first film (1996) was dominated by quirky alt-rock from the likes of Bjork, Skunk Anansie, and Cast. The new one is mostly metal and rap metal (Limp Bizkit, Metallica) with weirdo chanteuse Tori Amos as the wild card (as before, however, most of the songs do not appear in the movie itself). Hans Zimmer's orchestral score for M:I-2 also has a significantly different feel than Danny Elfman's for the original. Unlike Elfman, who favors an ironic post-modern update of classic '30s film scoring, Zimmer opts for a more contemporary, quasi world-beat feel. SKU: 1001212

Something To Remember
SOMETHING TO REMEMBER is a collection of Madonna's ballads. It includes two new songs, "You'll See" and "One More Chance," and two versions of "I Want You," originally recorded for the Marvin Gaye tribute album INNER CITY BLUES, which was released three weeks earlier. Personnel includes: Madonna (vocals); Dean Parks (acoustic guitar); Michael Thompson (electric guitar); Suzie Katayama (cello); David Foster, Jan Mullaney (keyboards); Simon Franglen (programming); Massive Attack. Producers include: Nellee Hooper, Madonna, Patrick Leonard, Babyface, David Foster. Engineers include: David Reitzas. Recorded at Chartmaker Studios; Brooklyn Studios. Includes liner notes by Madonna. She can dance and she can jive, and most of the time that's why you buy Madonna records. She's our real-life dancing queen. So if buying an album advertised as her "Greatest Ballad Hits" strikes you as sort of like buying acoustic Abba, you're probably not alone. But ever since TRUE BLUE, Madonna has displayed a keen interest in pop orchestration and smoky, soulful singing. On the breakthrough "Live To Tell," she discovered the low end of her vocal range, while co-producer and co-writer Patrick Leonard built a psychedelic swell of keyboards, guitars and sound effects around her. It was like nothing she had done before, dealing directly with dark secrets, foreshadowing an adult pop sound that she'd stick by through all the twists, turns and trends that followed. SOMETHING TO REMEMBERcollects such slow and mid-tempo tracks from the various nooks in which Madonna's hidden them (though most were singles, many had showed up in album form only on soundtracks), and shows off the dark chanteuse qualities that she has only intermittently gotten credit for. Notice the almost Beatlesque harmonies and swooping strings of her 1994 hit "Take A Bow," the dream-like feel of the electric piano on the wistful "This Used To Be My Playground," or the epic feel of "Oh Father," which starts with a dance of classical strings before dipping to a soul-baring vocal about the causes and effects of child abuse. The three new songs on SOMETHING TO REMEMBER are formidable additions to this oeuvre. "You'll See," with its Spanish guitar flourishes and lyric about surviving a wrecked affair, is a direct sequel to "Take A Bow." "I Want You," a Marvin Gaye cover that also appears on the Gaye tribute album INNER CITY BLUES, is a stunning collaboration with UK's Massive Attack, taking Madonna into a trippy, spare realm that sounds like dub with strings. And "One More Chance" is, amazingly, almost acoustic Madonna--the dancing queen cast improbably as the strumming princess. SKU: 1009657

Hymns Of The 49th Parallel
Personnel: K.D. Lang (vocals); Ben Mink (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, fiddle); Ralph Morrison, Sara Parkins, David Stenske, Tiffany Yi Hu (violin); Brian Dembow, Cynthia Fogg (viola); Larry Corbett, Stephen Erdody, Armen Ksajikian, Cecilia Tsan (cello); Teddy Borowiecki (accordion, piano, keyboards);David Piltch (acoustic bass guitar, bass guitar); Clayton Cameron (drums). Recording information: Conway Recording Studios, Los Angeles, California (2004). After tackling almost every conceivable musical style from country to disco to standards, K.D. Lang goes back to her roots with HYMNS OF THE 49TH PARALLEL, covering songs by the greatest songwriters of her Canadian homeland. It should surprise no one to find Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Leonard Cohen among the composers whose work is honored here. Lang tackles two songs each by these titanic artists, lending her agile, velvety voice and deceptively easy grace to each, accompanied by a small, acoustic-based combo dominated by piano. Ron Sexsmith, Bruce Cockburn, and Jane Siberry might not be household names on the order of the aforementioned trio, but they're entirely worthy of the passion with which Lang approaches their tunes here, a particular point of transcendence being achieved on Cockburn's gentle, folkish "One Day I Walk." "But wait," you cry, "what about Gordon Lightfoot, Ian Tyson, and the McGarrigle Sisters" Don't worry; with a talent like Lang's, it's entirely reasonable to assume she'll be on the scene long enough to get around to 49TH PARALLEL PT. II. SKU: 6571975
