Mirage [Remastered]
The remastered edition of MIRAGE is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as multimedia computer files, including the 1987 video for "Get On Down." Contains five bonus tracks. Meat Puppets: Curt Kirkwood (vocals, guitar); Cris Kirkwood (bass); Derrick Bostrom (drums). Includes liner notes by Derrick Bostrom, Marc Weingartena and Joe Sasfy. In 1987, when the Meat Puppets released their first full-length LP after their 1985 gem UP ON THE SUN, the Arizona trio was a college-radio favorite whose raucous, high-energy gigs earned them a modest-sized yet passionate following. Stylistically, MIRAGE isn't a huge departure from UP ON THE SUN. The Meats continued to mix country and psychedelic influences in their rock-trio cauldron, but the Southern boogie flavor that would become increasingly prevalent on subsequent records began creeping in, notably on "Quit It" and "Get On Down," which also features the gruffer vocal style of later releases. Curt Kirkwood hadn't yet plunged headlong into Z.Z. Top-style guitar heroics; instead, the lambent arpeggios of "A Hundred Miles" and the hyper-speed plucking of "Beauty" are the guitar-lover's moments of choice here. The thoroughly countrified romp "Confusion Fog" boasts some nifty bluegrass-style picking, and an opening line ("I lost mymind/a couple of gals ago") worthy of Hank Williams. The mood shifts between upbeat rockers and more introspective, idiosyncratic numbers like "Leaves" and the title track. Finally, they tear it up on the closing track, "Liquefied," which is as frantic and pumped up as anything in the Puppets' catalog. SKU: 1015285

Seven And The Ragged Tiger (Limited Edition) [Remastered]
Duran Duran: Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes, Andy Taylor, John Taylor, Roger Taylor. Additional personnel: Andy Hamilton (saxophone); Raphael DeJesus, Mark Kennedy (percussion); Michelle Cobbs, B.J. Nelson (background vocals). Recorded at Air Studios, Montserrat, West Indies. By the release of 1983's SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER, Duran Duran were genuine MTV-anointed superstars, which makesthis set's somewhat more experimental vibe an impressive step. The band's original goal was to be a cross between Chic and the Sex Pistols, but most of SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER explores a sort of glitter-tinged art-rock that occasionally resembles the first couple of albums by Sparks. There were three enormous hits off this album: the jagged "Union of the Snake," the anthemic "New Moon On Monday," and "The Reflex," which was drastically remixed by Chic's Nile Rodgers for its single release. That version appears on DECADE and GREATEST, Duran Duran's two singles compilations. Critically drubbed upon release, SEVEN AND THE RAGGED TIGER holds up better than many of Duran Duran's other efforts. SKU: 1084964

New Age Magical Musical
If it accomplished anything, that much-vilified genre known as progressive rock ("prog" to its coterie) not only helped to broaden rock's inherently limited vocabulary, it also brought about a healthy surfeit of musicians who wanted to experiment, cross-breed, and hybridize. The music by Third Ear Band often begs for an extra audiometric appendage, but anyone with two ears and a wide palette can enjoy the group's pan-cultural sounds quite well, thank you. Although MAGIC MUSIC is not quite "prog" in the literal sense of the word (sometimes not even "rock"), percussionist Glen Sweeney and cohorts do succeed in bridging the formidable gap between rock and Indian raga. The 12-minute "Sun Ra Raga" finds Third Ear Band also nipping at the nectar of jazz, recast through Middle Eastern veils and set to pungent grooves. Imagine Terry Riley jamming with Zakir Hussain as they debate the meritsof time signatures and time-keeping--MAGIC MUSIC would be the dog-eared report from that summit meeting. SKU: 4125202

Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads, The
Personnel: Otis Redding (vocals); Johnny Jenkins (guitar); Charles "Packy" Axton (tenor saxophone); Floyd Newman (baritone saxophone); Wayne Jackson, Sammy Coleman (trumpet). Booker T. & The MG's: Booker T. Jones (organ, keyboards); Steve Cropper (guitar, piano, background vocals); Donald "Duck" Dunn (bass); Al Jackson Jr (drums). Recorded between February 1964 and January 1965. Originally released on Volt (411). Includes liner notes by Paul Ackerman. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Dan Hersch (DigiPrep). Otis Redding's second album SINGS SOUL BALLADS found him abandoning his usual upbeat material for songs of yearning and heartbreak. Over the course of 12 songs, Redding establishes himself as one of the greatest soul singers by tapping into these universal feelings with his smoldering delivery and his mastery of vocal nuance. His effective call-and-response with Packy Axton's tenor sax on "A Woman, A Lover, AFriend" is spine-chilling, while his pleading is accentuated by a full horn section on "Your One And Only Man." Redding's talents as a songwriter were blossoming on material such as "Chained And Bound," "Your One And Only Man" and "I Want To Thank You." His choice of covers is also inspiring as he gives loving readings of songs by Chuck Willis ("It's Too Late"), Jerry Butler ("For Your Precious Love") and hero Sam Cooke ("Nothing Can Change This Love.") Spooked
Personnel: Robyn Hitchcock (vocals, guitar, sitar, harmonica,Wurlitzer piano); David Rawlings (guitar, dobro, Wurlitzer piano, tambourine, background vocals); Gillian Welch (guitar, bass guitar, drums, percussion, background vocals); Joey Spampinato (bass guitar). Recording information: Woodland Studios, Nashville, Tennessee (2004). Robyn Hitchcock's SPOOKED is the artifact of a brilliant week of acoustic jamming and recording in Nashville, Tennessee with roots mavens Gillian Welch (who sings harmonies and plays guitar, bass, and drums) and David Rawlings (who produces and plays keyboards and guitar). There are few overdubs, and the musicians play directly off each other, eschewing even headphones in an effort to achieve true musical communion. The Nashville duo's natural gravity and grace temper British rocker Hitchcock's more eccentric tendencies, resulting in a balanced, subtle, and disarmingly earnest set of songs. Though Welch's vocal presence lends a novel feminine touch, and Rawlings's electric piano and slide guitar take Hitchcock's songs in new directions, loyalists will not feel lost. The spoken "Welcome to Earth" will gratify fans of Hitchcock's surreal and hilarious onstage banter, and the a cappella "Demons & Fiends" revisits the slightly dissonant vocal harmonies of earlier Hitchcock faves. Elsewhere, the quietly intense "Creeped Out" is Hitchcock at his vitriolic best, and "We're Gonna Live in the Trees" sounds like a gleeful BTO with a primate fixation. The standout track here is the wistful "Sometimes a Blonde," with its beautiful descending guitar pattern that grows more insistent as it weaves around an increasingly urgent vocal and tangy dobro. SPOOKED is proof that an artist can mature, and even quiet down, without losing an ounce of vibrancy. SKU: 6574410

Spawn
One of the first requirements of an action movie is a soundtrack with a quick tempo, a raw edge, and a concept which relates it to the film. On SPAWN: THE ALBUM, hard rock favorites such as Metallica, Korn, and Slayer team up with rising electronica musicians like DJ Spooky, The Dust Brothers, and Atari Teenage Riot, making for an unlikely, but powerful new cross-breed of today's heaviest sounds. Some tracks feature electronic beats intertwined with heavy metal guitar riffs, while othersalternate between techno segments and explosive power-chord bravado. By the end of this dual assault of rapid-fire beats and fist-pounding guitar, there can be no doubt that this soundtrack succeeds in SPAWNing a new music fusion which, like the film's namesake, is heavy, fearsome, and completely futuristic. Welcome To My Nightmare (Expanded Edition) [Remastered]
Personnel: Alice Cooper (vocals); Vincent Price (spoken vocals); Dick Wagner (guitar, background vocals); Steve Hunter (guitar); Jozef Chirowski (Clavinet, keyboards, background vocals); Bob Ezrin (keyboards, background vocals); Prakash John, Tony Levin (bass); Whitey Glan, Johnny Badanjek (drums); TheSummerhill Children's Choir, Michael Sherman, Gerry Lyons (background vocals). Producer: Bob Ezrin. Reissue producer: Brian Nelson, David McLees, Bill Inglot. Engineers include: Jim Frank, Ed Sprigg, Phil Ramone. Recorded at Soundstage, Toronto, Ontario; Record Plant East, A&R Studios, and Electric Lady Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Jeffrey Morgan. Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch (Digiprep). After the band knowns as Alice Cooper broke up, the band's singer/namesake took the moniker on for his first solo album. In 1975, Reuniting with longtime producer Bob Ezrin (who was absent for Cooper's prior record, MUSCLE OF LOVE), Cooper released an album whose title explains the subject matter--WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE. Now on his own and in total control, Cooper was able to explore rock theatrics in a way that was impossible in his band. The ensuing tour was one of the most over-the-top excursions of that era. "Cold Ethyl" is a disturbing little ditty about necrophilia. The soft, melodic "Only Women Bleed" became a surprise smash for Alice, and there's a low-key feel as well on the chilling "Steven."The somewhat funky title track works as a kind of theme song, while Cooper's expected heavy metal tendencies are explored on "The Black Widow." Most of Lou Reed's band joined Cooper for this record. Guitarists Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner, as well as bassist Prakash John do a superb job of replicating the excitement of the original band. Dust
Screaming Trees: Mark Lanegan (vocals, guitar); Gary Lee Conner (acoustic & electric guitars, sitar, background vocals); Van Conner (guitar, bass, background vocals); Barrett Martin (cello, harmonium, drums, percussion, congas, tablas, djembe). Additional personnel: Mike McReady, Jeff Nolan (guitar); Milori (cello); Benmont Tench (piano, electric piano, mellotron, organ); George Drakoulias (percussion); Chris Goss, Brian Jenkins, 21st Street Singers (background vocals). Engineers include: Brian Jenkins, Jim Scott, Brett Eliason. Recorded at Capitol Studios and Sunset Sound Factory, Hollywood, California and The Hit Factory, New York, New York. Finally released four years after 1992's SWEET OBLIVION and recorded during a chaotic period of intra-band turmoil--singer Mark Lanegan was paying more attention than before to his concurrent solo career, and a Don Fleming-produced album from 1994 was reportedly rejected by the band's label--1996's DUST is a post-grunge epic. Although the Seattle band's '80s albums on SST Records had obvious roots in folk-rock and psychedelia, those influences wereobscured in the metallic roar of the group's two previous major-label albums. DUST is the most stripped-down of Screaming Trees' albums, with Gary Lee Connors' electric guitars mixed lower than before, giving more room to Lanegan's whiskey-cured voice. Neo-psychedelic touches like Mellotrons, flutes, and even sitars color the songs, which have a reflective, introspective feel missing from most of their earlier records. DUST is a giant step forward. Louder Than Bombs
The Smiths: Stephen Patrick Morrissey (vocals); Johnny Marr (guitar, mandolin, harmonica, piano, harmonium); Andy Rourke (cello, bass); Mike Joyce (drums). Additional personnel: Craig Gannon (guitar); Kristy MacColl (background vocals). Producers: The Smiths, Stephen Street, John Porter, Roger Pusey. LOUDER THAN BOMBS contains 24 songs, including 12 from the UK compilation of B-sides and singles THE WORLD WON'T LISTEN. 2 LPs on 1 CD. Compiled mostly from tracks on the two UK releases HATFUL OF HOLLOW and THE WORLD WON'T LISTEN, LOUDER THAN BOMBS is one of the best examples of the recorded genius of the Smiths. While the band's album releases were always anxiously awaited and well received, their most enduring gems could often be found on their singles. The Smiths took full advantage of the then-popular 12" single format, usually including non-album tracks on their B-sides, and this 24 track CD includes the most interesting examples of these. Numerous standout moments include "Ask," "Half A Person," "Shoplifters of the World Unite," "Panic," "William It Was Really Nothing," "Sheila Take A Bow,"and "Stretch Out and Wait." An essential addition to any Smiths completist's collection. SKU: 1006664

Led Zeppelin Box Set Vol.2
Led Zeppelin: Robert Plant (vocals, harmonica), Jimmy Page (acoustic & electric 6 & 12-string guitars, mandolin, background vocals), John Paul Jones (Fender bass, Mellotron, keyboards, background vocals), John Bonham (drums, percussion). Engineers include: Glyn Johns, Vic Maille, Andy Johns. Includes liner notes by David Fricke. Digitally remastered by Jimmy Page and George Marino at Sterling Sound. Contains 31 tracks from Led Zeppelin's nine studio albums not included on the original Zeppelin box set. Includes one previously unreleased track and a 48-page booklet featuring photographs, and complete credits. This pivotal quartet was formed in October 1968 by Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, Robert Plant and John Bonham. On Led Zeppelin, Page's staggering dexterity was matched by Plant's expressive, beseeching voice, a combination that flourished on Led Zeppelin II. A greater subtlety was emphasized on Led Zeppelin III, and Led Zeppelin IV included the anthemic 'Stairway To Heaven', 'Black Dog' and 'Rock 'N' Roll'. However, the effusive praise was more muted for Houses Of The Holy. A concurrent US tour helped to finance an in-concert film, issued in 1976 asThe Song Remains The Same. Physical Graffiti, a double set, gave full rein to the quartet's diverse interests. Advance orders alone assured Presence platinum status. Although lacking the definition of earlier work, In Through The Out Door was a strong collection on which John Paul Jones emerged as the unifying factor. Rehearsals were then undertaken for another US tour, but in September 1980, Bonham was found dead. On 4 December, Swansong announced that the group had officially retired, although a collection of archive material, Coda, was subsequently issued. Led Zeppelin are now rightly recognized as one of the most influential bands of the rock era. SKU: 1000144
