Combustication
Medeski Martin & Wood: John Medeski, Billy Martin, Chris Wood. Additional personnel includes: DJ Logic, Steve Cannon. At their collective core, Medeski, Martin & Wood are simply the most popular keepers of the organ trio flame in modern jazz. But this trio of downtowners is willing to piece together straight-no-chasers of all forms to get the party moving. COMBUSTICATIONS, their fourth album, does all that with a jazzy heart, some funky intestines, a set of salsa hips and a DJ on the brain. As with previous MMW albums, funky jazz is COMBUSTICATIONS' focus--whether it's smoky, mid-tempo hipsway ("Just Like I Pictured it") or churchy balladry (a gospel-tinged rendition of Sly Stone's "Everyday People"). But the width of the trio's scope is best exemplified by the polar contributions of the album's guests. Turntablist DJ Logic appears on the three tracks that prophesy a hip-hop-jazz future, particularly on "Church of Logic," where he builds a soundscape and then solos over the band. Contrast that with "Whatever Happened To Gus," on which East Village art dealer Steve Cannon does a Beat-derived dream monologue about old school jazz drummer Gus Johnson, while the band does a free-form freak-out behind him. BBC Sessions, The
The Jimi Hendrix Experience: Jimi Hendrix (guitar, vocals); Noel Redding (bass, background vocals); Mitch Mitchell (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: AlexisKorner (slide guitar); Stevie Wonder (drums). Producers include: Bill Bebb, Jeff Griffin, Bernie Andrews. Compilation producer: Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer, John McDermott. Recorded between February 13 and December 15, 1967 and on January 4, 1969. Includes liner notes by David Sinclair. Right around the same time the Hendrix juggernaut started snowballing in England, the BBC was in the midst of setting up Radio 1, an entity dedicated to broadcasting pop music. Spearheaded by adventurous DJs such as John Peel and Alexis Korner, Radio 1 provided an outlet for the creative outpouring of the newly arrived Hendrix along with countless others. Since many BBC sessions fell halfway between being a studio recording and a live performance, BBC SESSIONS shows off some of Hendrix's most spontaneous and creative outbursts. Along with the core of his catalog being showcased ("Purple Haze," "Fire"), Hendrix's fun-loving side shines through. Some of these moments include his wreaking havoc on Lulu's show by changing gears from a drastically reworked "Hey Joe" and dedicating "Sunshine Of Your Love" to the recently split up Cream before getting the plug pulled on him. Among the other covers included in this two-disc set is a notable instrumental jam on "I Was Made To Love Her," featuring Stevie Wonder on drums. More than any other recording up to this point, BBC SESSIONS shows the Jimi Hendrix Experience at its most bright-eyed and vibrant. SKU: 1001858

Blue Is The Colour
The Beautiful South: Paul Heaton, Jacqueline Abbott, Dave Hemingway (vocals); David Rotherary (guitar); Sean Welch (bass); David Stead (drums). Additional personnel: Damon Butcher (keyboards, programming); Andy Duncan (percussion, programming); Martin Ditcham (percussion). Formed in 1988 from the ashes of the short-lived, socialist pop group The Housemartins by singer/songwriter Paul Heaton (a Scotsman from Hull), The Beautiful South has continued plumbing Heaton's fascination with underdogs, domestic breakdowns, drunkenness (both relative to the previous and for its own sake) and social inequities. In place of The Housemartins' ringing, British Invasion-inspired guitar backdrops, however, songwriter/guitarist David Rotheray and singers Dave Hemingway and Jacqueline Abbotthave crafted a distinctive, folk-laced variety of chamber pop to draw Heaton into a more adult milieu. Buoyed by great singing and stately melodies, the arrangements pointedly underscore each composition's lyrical content. As the group's fifth studio outing (a sixth, hits package CARRY ON UP THE CHARTS, was the fourth-fastest selling UK album of all time), BLUE IS THE COLOUR breaks no new ground for The Beautiful South, yet for consistent quality and stylistic variety, it ranks with their very best. Brian Setzer Orchestra: Brian Setzer (vocals, guitar); Ray Herrmann, Tim Miscia, Steve Marsh, Rick Rossi, Dan Roberts (saxophone); Dan Fornero, John Fumo, Kevin Norton, Dennis Farias (trumpet); George McMullen, Michael Vlatkovich, Mark Jones, Robbie Hioki (trombone); Ernie Nunez, Tony Garnier (bass); Bernie Dresel (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Gwen Stefani (vocals); Steve Fowler, George Shelby, Bob Sandman (saxophone); Stan Watkins, Charlie Biggs (trumpet); Roger Burn (piano); Bob Parr, Mark W. Winchester (bass); Eddie Nichols, Meghan Ivey (background vocals). Recorded at The Village Recorder, West Los Angeles, California. THE DIRTY BOOGIE was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Album "Jump Jive An' Wail" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "Sleepwalk" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. In his continuing evolution from pompadoured rockabilly revivalist to zoot-suited hipster, Brian Setzer keeps the faith with THE DIRTY BOOGIE, a collection that swings from stem to bow. Backed by hot horns and a bopping rhythm section, Setzer mixes well-arranged originals with well-known covers that show an aficionado's appreciation of jump blues, swing and doo-wop. Tunes by the Skyliners ("Since I Don't Have You"), Santo & Johnny ("Sleepwalk"), Bobby Darin ("As Long As I'm Singin'") and Bullmoose Jackson ("Nosey Joe") all enjoy the combination of Setzer's wide-ranging guitar playing and excellent charts played by his crack orchestra. Elsewhere, Gwen Stefani is LaVerne Baker to Setzer's Jimmy Ricks in a playful reading of "You're The Boss." Clint Stacey's "This Old House" gives Setzer a chance to show off some fancy country finger-picking. The two numbers that will make you want to grab a flat foot floogie and cut a rug in your living room are a Neil Hefti-flavored re-arrangement of "Rock This Town" and a killer coverof Louis Prima's "Jump Jive An' Wail." Greatest Hits (Remixed)
When one of the early 1970s' most glam rock outfits meets head-on with several notable '90s industrial remixers, the result is Sweet's 1999 13-track compilation, GREATEST HITS REMIXED. Although the renowned glam rock band had reached its peak many years before hard-edged industrial rock made its mark, the two styles merge together surprisingly well. GREATEST HITS REMIXED is similar to 2001's A PUNK TRIBUTE TO METALLICA and 1999's APPETITE FOR RECONSTRUCTION. Highlights include modernized takes on such Sweet classics as "Ballroom Blitz" (by Mission UK),two versions of "Action" (Pigface and Rosetta Stone), "Wig-Wam Bam" (Alien Sex Fiend), and the bonus track "Sweet Megamix" (Die Krupps). Bennett Sings The Blues (Playing With My Friends) [SACD]
Personnel includes: Tony Bennett (vocals); B.B. King, Bonnie Raitt (vocals, guitar); Stevie Wonder (vocals, harmonica); Diana Krall, Sheryl Crow, Ray Charles, k.d. lang, Kay Starr, Billy Joel, Natalie Cole (vocals). The Ralph Sharon Quartet: Ralph Sharon (piano); Gray Sargent (guitar); Paul Langosch (bass); Clayton Cameron (drums). Recorded in Los Angeles, California and New York, New York. PLAYIN' WITH MY FRIENDS won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. "New York State Of Mind" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. PLAYIN' WITH MY FRIENDS finds Tony Bennett mixing it up with a broad range of musical veterans and a sprinkling of young turks on this collection whose material primarily draws from the late '40s/early '50s era when the lines between jazz, blues, and pop were blurred. Backed by the stalwarts of the Ralph Sharon quartet, Bennett's easy-going style conjures up an earlier era's definition of cool. The Astoria native takes on the trappings of a saloon singer whether he's flirting with Diana Krall on "Alright, Okay, You Win," commiserating with Ray Charles on the heavy-hearted "Evenin'," or flying solo on Jimmy Rushing's "Undecided Blues". Other collaboratorswho fare well are Billy Joel (the consistently endearing "New York State Of Mind") and fellow vocal great Kay Starr (a simmering take on Basie's "Blue And Sentimental"). Even when Bennett cuts loose, it's in a cool and collected manner that goes down easy like sipping whiskey. Louis Jordan's "Let The Good Times Roll" comfortably bounces along as fellow septuagenarian B.B. King squeezes off bluesy guitar riffs, and even the normally raucous Robert Cray-penned title track politely chugs along as Bennett's duet guests take turns stepping up to the mike. SKU: 6512164

Live In Australia
Full performer name: Frank Sinatra/Red Norvo Quintet. Personnel: Frank Sinatra (vocals); Red Norvo (vibraphone); Jimmy Wyble (guitar); Jerry Dodgion (flute, alto saxophone); Bill Miller (piano); Red Wooten (bass); John Markham (drums). Reissue producer: Will Friedwald. Recorded live at the Melbourne Stadium, Melbourne, Australia on March 31 and April 1, 1959. Includes liner notes by Will Friedwald. This recording goes the fabulous Paris sextet live set one better; not only is Sinatra backed by an even smaller, more intimate jazz combo, but he's captured a couple of years earlier in his career, and he brims with that much more youthful energy. This album began life as a sought-after bootleg recording that attained legendary status among Sinatra collectors. This official release features clearer sound, and allows the general public a fresh glance into the jazzier side of Sinatra's work. Led by vibes player Norvo, and energized by pianist Bill Miller, the group pushes Sinatra out of his comfort zone on every tune, and it's obvious that the singer's enjoying the hell out of the challenge. Sinatra's phrasing here is at its most supple and acrobatic, giving new life to tunes you thought he'd already defined. SKU: 1005585

And Then There Was X
Personnel includes: DMX, Regina Bell, Dyme, Sisqo, TheLox, Drag-On. Producers include: Swizz Beatz, P. Killer Trackz, Grease, Shok, Nokio. Recorded at The Hit Factory, Miami, Florida and Power House, Yonkers, New York. AND THEN THERE WAS X was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album and "Party Up" was nominated for Best Rap Solo Performance. No other rapper exerts quite as much energy as Def Jam heavyweight DMX. With his adrenaline-pumped hip-hop anthems, Yonkers native DMX has taken the hip-hop industry by storm. His third album, AND THEN THERE WAS X came only one year after his highly-anticipated second album, FLESH OF MY FLESH..., which came only six months after his multi-platinum debut, IT'S DARK AND HELL IS HOT. With this series of rapid-fire releases, DMX was able to remain on the cutting edge of rap. "What's My Name?" perhaps most clearly demonstrates the power of the Ruff Ryder frontman. The other Swizz Beatz-produced tracks bring forth more of the same flavor. His rough-edged lyrics and spitfire delivery will leave his "dogs" foaming at the mouth for more. Though X is backed by one of hip-hop's most prominent crews (the Ruff Ryders), the platinum pit bull proves he can hold his own and then some. SKU: 1068854

Beausoleil: Michael Doucet (vocals, guitar, fiddle); Sterling Richard (vocals, guitar, tambourine); Kenneth Richard (vocals, mandolin, harmonica); BruceMcDonald (guitar); Bessyl Duon (drums). Recorded at Studios EMI, Paris, France on May 5 & 6, 1976. Though released in 1997, ARC DE TRIOMPHE TWO STEP is actually a reissue of an album first recorded by Beausoleil in Paris, in 1976. Like the band's other work at the time, the focus is primarily on traditional French folk music, with not much sign of the zydeco style that would become integral to later recordings. Only two tracks, the haunting, minor key "CIA" and the folky "Take It to Me" (with lyrics sung in English) sound slightly out of step with the consistent, roots-conscious vision of founder and fiddler Michael Doucet. Doucet is the only member of the 1976 Beausoleil that remains its present incarnation, though the instrumentalists who appear on ARC DE TRIOMPHE reaffirm the band's historical high standard of musicianship. The fine playing on the title cut and "Bosco Moscow Stomp" alone illustrate the longevity of "Cajun boogie"--these tunes would be equally appealing whether recorded in the '20s, '70s or '90s. As a whole, this record proves why Beausoleil has been the best-known and most revered Cajun band of the last 20 years. SKU: 3106033

Into The Music
Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Herbie Armstrong (guitar, background vocals); Ry Cooder (slide guitar); Toni Marcus (mandolin violin, viola); Robin Williamson (pennywhistle); Pee Wee Ellis (saxophone); Mark Isham (trumpet, piccolo trumpet); Mark Jordan (keyboards); David Hayes (bass); Peter Van Hooke, Kurt Wortman (drums); Zakir Hussain (tablas); Katie Kissoon (background vocals). Recorded at Record Plant, Sausalito, California. After his '70s excursions into funk, soul and R&B, Morrison closed out the decade by getting back in touch with his Celtic roots, an idea he would eventually explore further onCELTIC HEARBEAT, with the Chieftains. On INTO THE MUSIC, Morrison keys in on the upbeat, celebratory aspects of traditional Irish music, incorporating them into his own tunes. Consequently, this is one of the most joyous-sounding Morrison records since HIS BAND & THE STREET CHOIR. He had already begun his association with Mark Isham (a key player on Morrison's mellower '80s records) and former James Brown saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis, but Morrison is also assisted here by Ry Cooder (who contributes slide to the aptly named "Full Force Gale") and Robin Williamson of the Incredible String Band, who enhances the aura of Celtic mysticism with his pennywhistle work. This is not to say that INTO THE MUSIC is some Celtic trad workout, just that the folk element is mixed in along with Morrison's usual grab bag of rock, pop, blues and undeniable soul. SKU: 1003225

Beach Boys Concert/Live In London 1969 [Remastered]
2 LPs on 1 CD: BEACH BOYS CONCERT (1964)/LIVE IN LONDON (1968). Reissue producer: Mark Linett. Includes liner notes by David Leaf. Digitally remastered using HDCD technology. BEACH BOYS CONCERT: Producer: Brian Wilson. Engineer: Chuck Britz. Recorded live at The Civic Auditorium, Sacramento, California on August 1, 1964. Originally released on Capitol (TAO/STAO-2198). LIVE IN LONDON: Producer: Brian Wilson. Recorded at The Palladium, London, England on December 1, 1968. Originally released on Capitol (ST-11584). Cleaning up the odds and ends of the Beach Boys' '60s releases, this two-fer CD combines 2 very different recordings, 1964's THE BEACH BOYS CONCERT and 1968's LIVE IN LONDON. On BEACH BOYS CONCERT, what's remarkable is how truly fine the difficult harmonies of songs like "I Get Around" and "In My Room" sound in comparison to the boys' garage-rocking semi-mastery of their instruments; it's amazing how well they were able to recreate that vocal sound on stage. LIVE IN LONDON is a lower-voltage affair, recorded by the group's late-'60s live lineup (Bruce Johnston subbing for the increasingly reclusive Brian Wilson, who had quit touring by then) with occasional horns and strings on more complex tunes like "God Only Knows" and a stunning a cappella take on Bobby Troup's "Their Hearts Were Full of Spring." The reissue's bonus tracks are a 1964 version of "Don't Worry Baby" that makes plain the song's debt to "Be My Baby," and a good-natured, relaxed version of the crazed semi-operetta "Heroes and Villains" recorded in Hawaii in 1967 with some different sections from the eventual SMILEY SMILE issue. Off The Record Vol.1 (Live Recordings 1956-1969)
LIVE RECORDINGS (1956-1969)...VOL. 1 is a collection of 27 previously unreleased live tracks by Bill Monroe & The Blue Grass Boys. Personnel includes: Bill Monroe (vocals, mandolin); Mac Wiseman, Peter Rowan (vocals, guitar); Bill Keith (banjo); Richard Greene (fiddle); David Grisman (bass). Includes liner notes by Ralph Rinzler. The Smithsonian Folkways label is justly famous for the quality of its releases, and LIVE RECORDINGS is certainly among the most valuable of its '90s productions. The disc contains 27 previously unreleased recordings of Bill Monroe and his band during their peak period as both creative artists and performers. Drawn from various main stage performances, festival workshops, and jam sessions, LIVE RECORDINGS presents bluegrass' finest artist inthe most favorable light possible: that is, in live performance. Nearly half these tracks derive from two 1956 performances, both of which catch Monroe and his band in top form. Whether powering their way through "Blue Grass Stomp" or harmonizing sweetly on "I'm Working On a Building," Monroe and company play flawless, spirited music. Later performances are equally proficient, highlighted by both rarities ("True Life Blues," "I Live In the Past") and Monroe standards ("Wayfaring Stranger," "Get Up John," "White House Blues"). Peter Rowan, Del McCoury, and Don Reno, just a few of the notables who passed through Monroe's band during this period, all make their presence felt. Volume 2 of LIVE RECORDINGS features Monroe duets with Doc Watson and is even better than Volume 1! SKU: 1033988
