Down The Road
Personnel includes: Van Morrison (vocals; acoustic guitar, harmonica, alto saxophone); Ned Edwards (acoustic & electric guitars, background vocals); Mick Green (acoustic & electric guitars); Johnny Scott (electric guitar, background vocals); Rosie Wetters (violin); Jake Walker (viola); Lee Goodall (flute, alto saxophone, baritone saxophone, background vocals); Martin Winning (clarinet, tenor saxophone); Acker Bilk (clarinet); Matt Holland (trumpet, flugelhorn); Richard Dunn (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Fiachra Trench (piano); John Allair, Geraint Watkins (Hammond B-3 organ); Pete Hurley (bass); Colin Griffin, Bobby Irwin (drums); Aine Whelan, Crawford Bell, Karen Hamill, Olwin Bell, Siobhan Petit (background vocals). Recorded at The Wool Hall, Bath, England. Includes liner notes by Ben Sidran. Like Woody Allen (if you'll indulge the analogy), Van Morrison is an artiste seemingly bound to a heavy-duty work ethic, churning out one release after another at a startlingly regular, workmanlike pace and only occasionally hitting some majestic artistic heights. DOWN THE ROAD might seem like a slow starter, but hear it through and it will gradually but definitively distance itself from the crowded, often samey pack of VM releases immediately preceding it. While the first few tunes are forays into folk-rock, R&B, and balladry of a sort far from uncommon in the Morrison repertoire, things pick up considerably midway through. "Talk is Cheap" is an uncompromising blues tune that could be a BLONDE ON BLONDE-era Dylan outtake. "Choppin' Wood" bears an Ivory Joe Hunter-like backing, but the lyrics comparefavorably to Van's '80s fave "Cleaning Windows." The Cab Calloway-style minor-key blues of "Whatever Happened to PJ Proby?" support quirky lyrics lamenting the loss of British rock cult figures Proby and Screaming Lord Sutch. Perhaps most impressive is "Man Has to Struggle," which manages the considerable feat of mating humanist philosophy to a soul groove. You never can tell what a mercurial sort like Van has up his sleeve. SKU: 1072198

Live At Wembley 1986
The 2003 edition of LIVE AT WEMBLEY contains bonus tracks. Queen: Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon, Roger Taylor. Additional personnel: Spike Edney (guitar, keyboards, background vocals). Recorded live at Wembley Stadium, London, England and Nepstadion, Budapest, Hungary in 1986. Originally issued just a few months after Freddie Mercury's untimely death, LIVE AT WEMBLEY '86 is two discs full of Queen atthe height of its powers in concert. Perfectly blending popular hits with more obscure album tracks and several vintage 1950s rock & roll covers, WEMBLEY '86 is everything a Queen fan could possibly want from an in-concert release. Recorded at England's massive Wembley Stadium during a stop on their sold-out A KIND OF MAGIC summer tour, the band is heard giving it their all in front of over 150,000 fans during a two-night stand. LIVE AT WEMBLEY '86 proves to be a very consistent set, a worthy successor to Queen's previous double live album, 1979's LIVE KILLERS. All of the band's classic '70s material--"Tie Your Mother Down," "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions," "Bohemian Rhapsody"--is performed with just as much vigor as their newer cuts--"One Vision," "A Kind of Magic," "Under Pressure," "Another One Bites the Dust." And it's a gas to hear Queen have some fun with spirited renditions of '50s standards--"Tutti Frutti," "(You're So Square) Baby I Don't Care," and "Hello Mary Lou (Goodbye Heart)." SKU: 6528824

Talk On Corners (Special Edition)
This special edition of TALK ON CORNERS features several remixes and tracks previously not included on the album. The Corrs: Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Jim Corr (guitar, accordion, keyboards, programming); Sharon Corr (violin, background vocals);Caroline Corr (drums, bodhran, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: The Chieftans, Paddy Moloney, David Foster. Producers: David Foster, Oliver Leiber, Jim Corr, Glen Ballard, John Hughes. Recorded at The Bunker, Wrexham, Wales. The Corr family's music hit big in Europe before making it's way to America, so the U.S. label folks had a little time to prepare something special for the American release of TALK ON CORNERS. Consequently, the U.S. edition of the album contains songs not included on the original European album, as well as additional remixes of some of the tunes. The Corrs' mixture of contemporary pop with traditional Irish influences is certain to appeal to audiences in both camps. Any album that features guest appearances from both David Foster and the Chieftains is bound to have some serious cross-market appeal. The Corr siblings are no instrumental slouches either, and their tasty contributions on traditional pop/rock instruments (as well as tin whistle, bodhran, etc.) are the foundation of the genre-defying construct that is TALK ON CORNERS. Stoned Soul Picnic (The Best Of Laura Nyro)
Personnel includes:Laura Nyro (vocals, guitar, piano, electric piano, organ, synthesizer, keyboards); LaBelle (vocals); Jay Berliner, John Tropea, Jeff Mironov, Roland Chambers, Norman Harris, Elliot Randall, Hugh McCracken, Cornell Dupree, Tommy Tedesco (guitar); Alice Coltrane (harp); Joe Farrell, George Young (flute, saxophone); Buddy Lucas (harmonica); Bernie Glow, Pat Calello (trumpets); Wayne Andre, Jimmy Cleveland, Ray DeSio (trombone); Felix Cavaliere (organ, bells); Todd Rundgren (synthesizer); David Friedman, Mike Mainiere (vibraphone); Chuck Rainey, Freddie Washington, Richard Davis, Cyril Cianflone (bass); Dino Danelli, Andy Newmark, Hal Blaine, Bernard Purdie, Rick Marotta (drums); Carter "C.C." Collins (conga, percussion). Producers: Milt Okun, Charlie Calello, Laura Nyro, Roy Halee, Bones Howe, Arif Mardin, Felix Cavaliere, Gamble and Huff, Roscoe Harring, Gary Katz. Compilation producer: Dan Loggins. Engineers include: Dale Ashby, Wayne Yurgelun. Recorded between 1966 and 1994. Includes liner notes by Paul Zollo. Though she was an innovator in '60s pop-rock on a par with Paul Simon, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro's place in the history books is not as secure as those of her peers. Whether this is due to her markedly reduced output after her late-'60s/early-'70s heyday, the inconsistency of her later releases or some indefinable sociological phenomenon is hard to say. What this two-CD career retrospective does prove beyond a shadow of a doubt is that Nyro was a true original. She merged jazz, gospel, R&B and girl-group pop to create an unprecedented form that was both sonically rich and instantly accessible. STONED SOUL PICNIC features Nyro's broad, poetic vision on great early songs like "Gibsom Street" and "New York Tendaberry" as well as on cuts best known through other singers' versions ("And When I Die," "Stoney End," etc.). What emerges over the course of these two discs is the highly-developed aesthetic sensibility of an artist who not only understood the sources of her inspiration, but had enough of a vision to assimilate those sources and take them someplace new. Maestro
Personnel: Beenie Man, Lady Saw, Silver Cat (vocals); Lloyd "Gitsy" Willis (guitar); Dean Fraser (horns); Robbie Lyn, Donald Dennis, Paul "Wrong Move" Crosdale,Steve "Lenky" Marsden (keyboards, bass); Warren "Jug Head" Thompson (keyboards); Gary Jackson (bass, drums); Robbie Shakespeare, Delroy Nevin (bass); Andrew Thomas, Melbourne "George" Miller, Sly Dunbar (drums); Bongo Herman, Alvin (percussion); Brian Gold, Tony Gold, Red Rose, Collin "Bulby" York, Little Kirk (background vocals). Producers include: Sly & Robbie. Recorded at Penthouse Recording Studio and Mixing Lab, Kingston, Jamaica. Since the mid-'90s, Beenie Man has ruled the dancehall with a combination of wicked humor, strange melodies, rump-shaking beats, dirty talking, and high-minded roots and culture. To some, his music represents all that is wrong with reggae, with its salacious humor and ultramodern rhythms; while for others, these aspects make him the greatest thing since sliced bread. Beenie himself doesn't seem fazed by this contradiction--he just continues to make hit after hit and sounds like he is having fun doing it. MAESTRO is a high point, featuring big hits like the swinging "Nuff Gal," "Romie," and the wonderful "Girls Dem Sugar." But there is a whole lot more to Beenie Man than just girl lyrics. "Africans," "One Big Road," and "In the Ghetto" (recorded with hip-hop's Da Bush Babees) are all strong roots-oriented dance tracks that demonstrate Beenie's ability to change styles while still staying true to his own unique voice. Dirt Of Luck, The
Helium: Mary Timony (vocals, guitar, piano, organ, keyboards, xylophone, bass, drums); Ash Bowie (guitar, piano, keyboards, bass); Shawn King Devlin (drums, percussion). THE DIRT OF LUCK, Helium's follow-up to its acclaimed EP PIRATE PRUDE, is Mary Timony's descent into the dark recesses of human emotion. From the opening track, "Pat's Trick," on which she sleepily sings "this one is scrawny and looks like me cause it's dirty and I'm so dirty too" over fuzzed-out '70s-style punk riffs, it's clear that this is by no means a comfortable, or even psychologically stable listen. What makes the album compelling is Timony's marriage of the grimy and depraved tothe supple and beautiful, and her consistent ability to keep both music and lyrics off kilter. On "Superball" she compares her emotional state to the children's toy, over a swirling, sinister dirge of guitar and theremin-sounding keyboard. Helium's melodies are beautiful, even when pierced with dissonant wails and willfully off-key vocals, imbuing the work with a dark psychosexual charge. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the spellbindingly twisted pop of "Silver Angel" with its spiraling melody descending into chaos. THE DIRT OF LUCK is beautifully contradictory, the perfect forum for Mary Timony's trio. SKU: 1011239

Best Of Nina Simone, The (The Colpix Years)
Contains material Nina Simone recorded for the Coplix label in the early '60s. Includes three previously unreleased tracks. A collection of recordings that the inimitable Nina Simone made for the Colpix label early in her career, between 1959 and 1963. Simone excels onthe many live cuts included here, accompanying herself on the piano with her trio, which features the intricately beautiful guitar work of Al Shackman. Her treatment of Irving Berlin's "You Can Have Him" is transcendent and breathtaking. Even when she's gentle and tender, as in her classic version of "Wild Is the Wind," her passion always seethes under the surface. She is a master musician, and her tastes in material and arrangements are always eclectic, daring, and surprising. The 19 tracks here (two previously unreleased), run the gamut of jazz, folk, blues, and soul, providing a wonderful overview of her powerful artistry. SKU: 5068188

Natural Woman (The Ode Collection 1968-1976)
Personnel includes: Carole King (vocals, piano). This 2-CD box set contains 36 tracks including 2 previously unreleased songs and 2 previously unreleased live recordings. In addition, the package comes with a 36-page booklet with extensive liner notes and rare photos. The two-disc set A NATURAL WOMAN collects the highlights of Carole King's eight-year tenure at Lou Adler's Ode Records. Of course, of the several albums she released between 1968 and 1976, one stands out above all others; TAPESTRY is an all-time classic, the definitive '70s singer/songwriter album and the epitome of piano rock. A NATURAL WOMAN treats the album with the respect it deserves, including it in its entirety. What's remarkable about this 36-track collection is that as brilliant as songs like "It's Too Late," "Where You Lead" and "So Far Away" are, the rest of the set is nearly up to their level. In fact, listening to the songs from the follow-up RHYMES AND REASONS, it's remarkable that this album didn't match the stratospheric commercial success of its predecessor. The set also includes rarities like the 1972 movie song "Pocket Money" and four unreleased tracks, two live takes including a duet with James Taylor on "You're Got AFriend" and two surprisingly fine outtakes from RHYMES AND REASONS. Very Best Of Macy Gray, The
Macy Gray catapulted into the limelight around the beginning of 2000 with the unusual, but certainly captivating, single "I Try," leading to critical acclaim and multiple Grammy nominations for her debut record. While "unique" is a word too often used to describe R&B vocals, Gray's raspy, dramatic singing style and coy, lilting inflections are truly unlike any other (Kelismay be the only performer even in her neighborhood). Gray's originality carries over to her songwriting, which is peppered with angular sonic phrases intermingled with acute observations on life, love, and society. "Do Something," which seamlessly interpolates about four different musical themes into an enrapturing message-oriented song, is a prime example. Over three albums, Gray gained a sizeable following, while scoring periodic hits. Only five years after her debut, she captured enough fancies to earn a best-of collection. THE VERY BEST OF MACY GRAY gathers her finest moments from these records (including the smooth "Sweet Baby" and the hip-hop flecked "It Ain't the Money"), along with two new songs, most notably an exceptional revision of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way," and three inventive remixes, including a deft Gang Starr take on "I've Committed Murder." Producers: Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Chips Moman, Ken Mansfield. Compilation producer: Rob Santos. Recorded at American Studios, Nashville, Tennessee between August 1977 and November 1977. Originally released on RCA (#2686). Includes liner notes by Rich Kienzle. Digitally remastered by MikeHartry (BMG). Waylon and Willie have always been a natural fit. They both helped pioneer the Outlaw Country move00nt in the '70s, with a raw, rootsy approach with enough grit to appeal to rockers and hardcore honky-tonkers. While both men are superstars in their own right, their collaborations have endeared them to an even larger audience, and this compilation focuses on some of that partnership's key moments. The quirky muse of Kris Kristofferson is tapped for the eccentric state-of-the-world tune "The Year 2003 Minus 25" and "Don't Cuss The Fiddle," and the duo pulls off an admirably understated take on "Dock of the Bay." shine here. Classic beer-swigging jukebox staples like "Good Hearted Woman" and "Mammas Don't Let Your Babys Grow Up To Be Cowboys." SKU: 1057765

Producers include: Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Peter Collins, Jean Hebrail, Jimmy Jam. Engineers include: Garfield McDonald, Delroy Harrison, Mike Malak. Includes liner notes by Tim Rice. After collaborating with Tim Rice on the enormously successful Lion King soundtrack, Elton John once again joined forces with the veteran stage lyricist on a contemporary score for Verdi's AIDA. Based on Egypt's enslavement of Nubia in the time of the Pharoahs, AIDA tells the story of ill-fated love between Prince Radames and a Nubian slave whose name graces this work. John recruited a cavalcade of musical superstars, stopping long enough to duet with Lulu ("The Messenger"), Janet Jackson ("I Know The Truth"), LeAnn Rimes ("Written In The Stars") and Heather Headley and Sherie Scott, members of the stage show ("A Step Too Far.") Elsewhere, John and Rice wrote material that ranges from Sting's Sly & Robbie-produced reggae romp "Another Pyramid" to the rhythmically explosive teaming of Tina Turner and Angelique Kidjo on "Easy As Life." John's broad musical palette find him using Motown-flavored rhythms on Lenny Kravitz's infectious "Like Father Like Son," fusing hip-hop and gospel on Kelly Price's "The Gods Love Nubia"and giving Headley a chance to show off vocal chops on "Elaborate Lives."
