Fairytale
Personnel: Donovan Philip Leitch (vocals, guitar, banjo, harmonica); Shawn Phillips (12-string guitar); Danny Thompson (cello); Harold McNair (flute); Brian Locking (bass); Skip Alan (drums). Producers: Terry Kennedy, Peter Eden, Geoff Stephens. Originally released on Hickory (127). Includes original release liner notes by Ren Grevatt. Sequel Records' followup to their CATCH THE WIND compilation, FAIRYTALE documents the erawhere Donovan Leitch was slowly turning from earnest folkie to pop oddball, though here he's still much more the former than the latter. Buffy Sainte Marie's "Universal Soldier" and his own "Colours," both heard here in two different versions, set the tone early on, but later in songs like "Sunny Goodge Street" and "The Summer Day Reflection Song," his SUNSHINE SUPERMAN-era twee-pop tendencies start to come to the fore. Donovan's early records are rather unfairly judged these days, but they're actually most charming examples of mid-'60s folk rock--any Simon and Garfunkel fan, for example, will find FAIRYTALE interesting. The reissue includes a number of rare single sides. SKU: 1069172

Hemispheres
Rush: Geddy Lee (vocals, synthesizers, bass); Alex Lifeson (guitar); Neil Peart (drums, percussion). Recorded at Rockfield Studios, Wales between June & July 1978. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Rush began life as a power trio in the Led Zeppelin/heavy rock mode. Over the years the band refined their musical vision asthey gained both instrumental and conceptual facility. 1978's HEMISPHERES marks their transition from heavy riff-mongers to full blown art-rockers. Lee, Lifeson and Peart employ a number of tricks from the prog-rock bag here; (very) extended songs, multi-part suites, long instrumental passages, rapidly shifting tempos and time signatures, complicated unison riffs and synthesizer orchestrations. It's to Rush's credit that these elements enhance their sound instead of obscuring it. In fact, "La Villa Strangiato" would become one of the band's best-loved '70s efforts and a long-standing concert favorite. SKU: 1019727

Ezz-thetics
Personnel: George Russel (piano);Eric Dolphy (alto saxophone, flute, bass clarinet); Don Ellis (trumpet); Dave Baker (trombone); Steve Swallow (acoustic bass); Joe Hunt (drums). George Russell is one of those jazz composers whose influence is felt far more than his music has been heard. Russell developed the concept of playing jazz based on scales and modes rather than chord changes--which, roughly, means his music, though firmly based in jazz, sounds like almost no other, maintaining a fresh, immediate quality. EZZ-THETICS is a 1961 recording featuring some players who would go on to make jazz history in their own ways: Eric Dolphy, Steve Swallow and Don Ellis. Russell's compositions are thoughtful, full of the unexpected, yet are melodious and swing like mad. The title track features some cheerfully twisted and twisting unison playing from the horns, and percussive, Monk-tinged piano from Russell. "Thoughts" mixes cubist bebop with the late-night after-hours blues. One of the two covers here is the rare Mile Davis tune "Nardis" (which Miles wrote but never recorded), given a pensive yet heart-swelling and thoroughly gorgeous ballad treatment. SKU: 5046865

If you spent several years meticulously preparing each release like Def Leppard, you'd have countless unused ditties lying around too. This bounty forms the basis for 1993's RETRO ACTIVE. The collection includes B-sides and rarities that will be familiar toonly the most die-hard fans--including such rockers as "She's Too Tough," "Ride Into the Sun," and "Ring of Fire," plus the ballads "Miss You in a Heartbeat," and "Two Steps Behind." Usually such compilations are of variable quality, but RETRO ACTIVE is sequenced so cunningly it's almost comparable to a Def Leppard studio album. SKU: 1005836

Charles Mingus Quintet + Max Roach, The
Personnel: Charles Mingus (bass); George Barrow (tenor saxophone); Eddie Bert (trombone); Mal Waldron (piano); Willie Jones, Max Roach (drums). Recorded live at the Cafe Bohemia, New York, New York on December 23, 1955. Originally released on Fantasy (6009). Includes liner notes by Ralph J. Gleason. Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). The mid-'50s was a transitional period for Mingus' music. Still working within fairly conventional song structures, he began to experiment with various harmonic and rhythmic augmentations of the pieces in his repertoire, like a sculptor changing the shapes of familiar objects until, while still identifiable, they begin to take on a new identity. Here he directs his quintet through evocative, atmospheric embellishments (trombonist Eddie Bert's sustained notes sound like a fog horn on "A Foggy Day"), shifts in tone and dynamic (the jarring changes in "Lady Bird") and the pulsing, contrapuntal lines of "Love Chant," while maintaining strong links to traditional form and melody. Master skinsman Max Roach appears on two tracks here, "I'll Remember April," and the floating dialogue between drums and bass in "Drums." The members of theQuintet play solidly throughout (though Roach's spot in "I'll Remember April" steals the show). The music (recorded live at a club date in New York City, 1955) is skilful, intriguing and accessible: a cross-section of Mingus' earliest concentrations and the exploratory direction he would take in the late '50s/ early '60s. Uprising [Remastered]
Bob Marley & The Wailers: Bob Marley (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Aston "Family Man" Barrett (guitar, piano, bass, percussion); Junior Marvin (guitar, background vocals); Tyrone Downie (keyboards, background vocals); Carlton Barrett (drums, percussion). The I Threes: Rita Marley,Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowatt (background vocals). Producer: Bob Marley & The Wailers. Reissue producers: Bill Levenson, Maxine Stowe. Recorded at Tuff Gong Studio, Kingston, Jamaica. Originally released on Island (9596). Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (2001, Sterling Sound, New York, New York). Bob Marley generated a staggering number of great records during his brief time in the world's spotlight. Although he cut his first recordings in the early 1960s, it was not until the 1973 release of CATCH A FIRE that Marley and the Wailers became international stars. Eight years later Marley was dead, a victim of cancer. In between, he recorded eight studio albums and several live albums, all of excellent quality. UPRISING is Marley's final album, and it's also one of his best. As on all his recordings, Marley's writing displays the gift for melody that helped non-Jamaican audiences gain access to his music even when he was singing about the details of island life and the doctrine of Rastafarianism. The most popular tracks here, "Could You Be Loved" and "Redemption Song," are pop masterpieces, but so too are lesser known tracks "Coming In From The Cold," "Pimper's Paradise," and "Bad Card." And except for "Redemption Song," a stunningly poignant protest song that features only Marley on vocal and acoustic guitar, you can dance to it. What more could you ask for? SKU: 1063779

We'll Soon Find Out
Personnel: Joey Baron (drums); Arthur Blythe (alto saxophone); Bill Frisell (acoustic & electricguitars); Ron Carter (bass). Recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York. Although primarily known as a member of the New York downtown band of eclectics, drummer Joey Baron's musicianship is deeply rooted in tradition. He rides the thin line between acoustic jazz improvisation and free-for-all experimentation while always keeping an ear out for styles as diverse as country, classical, and world music. On WE'LL SOON FIND OUT, Baron reflects this dichotomy in his masterful performances, his advanced compositions, and his choice of sidemen. Guitarist Bill Frisell's eclectic twang fits into Baron's musical enterprise perfectly, matching the drummer's earthy approach and eccentric leanings hand in glove. From meandering ballads like "Time to Cry," to the rollercoaster swing of "Equaled," the two ride the fringe while stalwart bassist Ron Carter lays down his firm foundation with nary a quiver. Saxophonist Arthur Blythe is in fine form, too, bending and swaying snaking lines on the bluesy opener "Slow Charleston," and the bouncing mambo "Junior." Baron drives it all with his slightly slanted jazz drumming that looks at both the past and future with each crash, thump, and clang. SKU: 1034968

Room, The
Personnel: Harold Budd (various instruments); Terrence Budd (acoustic guitar); Chas Smith (pedal steel guitar, metal crotales). Recorded at Orangewood Studios, Mesa, Arizona. When Harold Budd makes "space music," he doesn't conjure images of galaxies and planets. He is an architect of small spaces--rooms lit, or unlit, by sun, moon, or candle. THE ROOM began as a single piece on Budd's 1988 album THE WHITE ARCADES, and refracted into a number of other studies, 12 of which are captured here.A new recording of the original composition, "The Room," also appears at the very end. As with all of Budd's albums, reverb and silence play a big role. These rooms echo with both emptiness and warmth. Budd uses chimes, distortion and, most effectively, the deep strains of a Hammond organ to sketch the contours of each sonic chamber. The occasional guitar appears, as in the compelling conversation between acoustic piano and pedal steel guitar in "Room of Ancillary Dreams." Budd makes startling use of feedback on "The Candied Room," transforming simple piano chords into shimmering salvos of harp-like sound. Compositionally, the highlight of this record is "The Room of Mirrors," a quietly dramatic organ fugue. Although Budd is not a piano virtuoso, his genius is in wresting commanding and complex sounds from a limited palette and a single source of inspiration. SKU: 1046127

Black Rider, The
Personnel: Tom Waits (vocals, organ, keyboards, marimba, calliope, percussion); Wiliam Burroughs (vocals); Greg Cohen (various instruments); Joe Gore (guitar, banjo); Henning Stoll (viola, bassoon); Linda Deluca, Gerd Bessler (viola); Matt Brubeck (cello); Volker Hemken (clarinet); Ralph Carney (bass clarinet, saxophone); Larry Rhodes (bassoon); Nick Phelps (French horn); Kevin Porter (trombone); Hans-Jorn Braudenberg, Francis Thumm (organ); Bill Douglas, Stefan Schafer (bass); Kenny Wollesen (percussion, marimba); Don Neely (musical saw); Kathleen Brennan, Clive Butters, Joe Marquez (boots). Recorded at Prairie Sun Recording Studios, Cotati, California and Music Factory, Hamburg, Germany. Includes liner notes by Tom Waits. This album contains songs Tom Waits wrote and performed for the stage production of THE BLACK RIDER directed by Robert Wilson and written by William Burroughs. THE BLACK RIDER contains Waits' versions of the songs he wrote for the Robert Wilson play of the same name. Wilson has worked with everyone from Philip Glass to Lou Reed, so he's just the kind of left-of-center visionary to accommodate Waits' offbeat musical style. From NIGHTHAWKS AT THE DINER to FRANK'S WILD YEARS, Waits has always been a concept man, and you don't get more conceptual than supplying songs for this semi-mythological narrative of passion and death. THE BLACK RIDER is somewhat similar in style to the twisted cabaret/blues of Waits' mid-80s work, butwith a pronounced European artsong flavor. Accordingly, Waits is accompanied by a mix of his U.S. cronies (Joe Gore, Greg Cohen, etc.) and the musicians from the original BLACK RIDER production. The presence of William Burroughs as lyricist on a couple of tunes represents the closing of a circle that includes the heavy influence of the '50s beat writers on Waits' early work. Less visceral and more cerebral then Waits' previous work, BLACK RIDER is nevertheless full of masterful compositions and inventive, idiosyncratic arrangements. SKU: 5072268

In Pain (Live)
Personnel includes: Townes Van Zandt (vocals, guitar); Hans Theessink (guitar); Wolfgang Pracht (slide guitar, dobro). Recorded live at the Bahnfof Langendreer Club, Bochum, Germany in November 1994 & November 1996; the Starclub, Dresden, Germany, Germany in November 1996; the Muffathalle Club, munich, Germany in November 1995; the Szene Wien Club, Vienna, Austria in November 1996. The mid-to-late '90s found the walls closing in on renowned country/folk troubadour Van Zandt. As his physical and psychological travails took an ever greater toll on him, his performances became increasingly erratic, sometimes difficult to watch, as he often virtually self-destructed right before one's eyes. Fortunately, the too-appropriately titled IN PAIN--which features various European live performances from '94 to '96--cherry-picks the most intense, rewarding moments from Van Zandt's last haunted years. The ghosts gaining on the singer's soul give the songs an added weight. The harrowing struggle against existential pain in "Nothin'," written early in Van Zandt's career, seems here like a self-fulfilling prophecy. "You Are Not Needed Now," Townes' ode to the late Janis Joplin, could be his own eulogy, eerily delivered in advance of his passing. Even the tender ballad "Katie Belle Blues," written for Van Zandt's daughter, gains in poignancy given the darkened context inwhich it appears. There are several live Van Zandt albums, but when it comes to the latter-day ones, IN PAIN is as good as any. SKU: 1025585

Poverty's Paradise [PA]
Naughty By Nature: Treach, Vinny (vocals); Kay Gee (vocals, keyboards). Additional personnel: Jaz Jackson, Chaz Harper, Angela Piva (vocals); Dave Bellochio (keyboards); Jack Davey (bass). Producers: Naughty By Nature, Minnesota, Al Mal, Brice, Mufi, Kid Nyce. Engineers include: Angela Piva, Dave Bellochio, Mike Pisano. Principally recorded at Marion Recording, Soundtrack & Battery Studios. POVERTY'S PARADISE won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "Feel Me Flow" was nominated for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group. East Orange, New Jersey's finest are back at it, destined to regain platinum status with their third effort, POVERTY'S PARADISE. Already responsible for such hip-hop classics as "O.P.P.," "Uptown Anthem" and "Hip-Hop Hooray," Naughty By Nature comes packed with some impressive attributes: Treach and Vinnie's unique lyrical styles, Kay Gee's distinct rhythmic beats, and a widespread appeal that is due largely to their ultra-catchy choruses and general pop sense. Each Naughty By Nature release inevitably delivers the hip-hop anthem of the year (see previous paragraph for examples), and on POVERTY'S PARADISE that distinction falls to "Craziest." Regularly leaving listeners in the dust, Treach remains one of the strongest vocalists in rap music on the strength of his tongue-twisting rhymes: "Wasn't driving too fast/I was flying too low/You think I'm rocking too quick/I think you're listening too slow." And to all those who thought he may have been the weak part of the NBN equation, Vinnie's added flavor on "Clap Yo Hands" proves his skills to be quite worthy. DJ/producer extraodinaire Kay Gee is also in fine form, funking up "Sunshine" with a well-known Roy Ayers sample. But as the title implies, POVERTY'S PARADISE is not all about keeping the party going, and "Chain Remains," a laid-back groove that explores the misfortunes of a growing, incarcerated population, is a needed dose of reality. Filled with ghetto tales and guest appearances from fellow members of the Double I family (Rottin Razkals, Road Dawgs and others), the much anticipated release fulfills Naughty By Nature'sdream of turning their poverty into paradise. LA Woman
The Doors: Jim Morrison (vocals); Robby Krieger (guitar); Ray Manzarek (piano, keyboards); John Densmore (drums). Additional personnel: Marc Benno (guitar); Jerry Scheff (bass). Recorded at The Doors Workshop, Los Angeles, California. The final Doors album to feature vocalist Jim Morrison reaffirmed the quartet's grasp of blues/rock. Beset by personal and professional problems, they retreated to a rehearsal room, cast such pressures aside and recorded several of their most memorable compositions. The musicianship is uniformly excellent, the interplay between guitarist Robbie Krieger and keyboard player Ray Manzarek exudes confidence and empathy, while the strength and nuances ofMorrison's voice add an unmistakable resonance. His death within weeks of the album's completion inevitably casts a pall over its content, especially the eerie rain and the funereal electric piano of 'Riders On The Storm'. SKU: 1041671

Crossroads Vol.2 (Live In The Seventies)
Full title: Crossroads 2: Live In The Seventies. CROSSROADS 2 is a 4-CD box set consisting mostly of Eric Clapton's unreleased live performances from 1974, 1975 and 1978, but is bookended by four previously unreleased studio tracks: "Walking Down The Road" (recorded in 1974), "To Make Somebody Happy," "Cryin'" and "Water On The Ground" (recorded in 1978). The set includes a 44-page color booklet with essays, complete credits and rare photographs. Personnel includes: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); George Terry, Graham Lyle, Carlos Santana (guitar); Marcy Levy (harmonica, background vocals); Dick Sims (keyboards); Carl Radle, Dave Markee (bass); Jamie Oldaker, Henry Spinetti (drums); Armando Peraza, Sergio Pastora, Leon Chancler (percussion); Yvonne Elliman (background vocals). Producers: Tom Dowd, Glyn Johns, Jon Astley. Compilation producer: Bill Levenson. Engineers include: Karl Richardson, Ed Barton, Bill Brovas. Recorded in the U.S. and the U.K. between May 1974 and December 28, 1978. Includes liner notes by John McDermott Chock-full of blistering live performances drawn exclusively from the Tulsa-based band Clapton used during the "me" decade, CROSSROADS 2 is the antidote to his mostly laid-back, sleepy studio performancesof the era. With nearly 5 hours of music spread over 4 discs, CROSSROADS 2 never becomes redundant or too much of a good thing--a true testament to the power and fury of Clapton's excellent songs and fiery verve. Smoky vocals and truly inspired guitar workouts serve both his well-known hits and the sometimes obscure blues-songs he chooses. A 24-minute medley duet with Carlos Santana from '75 burns with passion and excitement. The album is bookended with 4 studio outtakes, with 1974's "Walkin' Down The Road" and "Cryin"--recorded four years later with the nucleus of Slowhand's next band--reflecting a more contemplative mood. A terrific set that entertains, surprises and delights, and an essential item that any Clapton connoiseur will treasure. SKU: 1001676

Mask Of Zorro, The
Original score composed by James Horner. Producers: Jim Steinman, Simon Rhodes, Tony Hinnigan, James Horner. It's hard to imagine a more surefire recipe for a summer blockbuster--THE MASK OF ZORRO not only stars heartthrob Antonio Banderas and credibility magnet Anthony Hopkins, but just to be absolutely sure, the score is by none other that James Horner, the man who put together the mega-hit score of TITANIC (you may have heard of it). Just as he did in the story of the ill fated vessel, Horner manages to capture every second of the film's thrill-a-minute excitement, as well as giving voice to the passion which drives the film's hero. The film's music uses dramatic swells and Latin percussion to tell the story of the mysterious crusader; its love theme is as well-cast as the film itself--Puerto Rican superstar Marc Anthony teams up with Australian siren Tina Arena for theromantic epic "I Want To Spend My Lifetime Loving You."
