Collision Course (MTV Ultimate Mash-Ups Presents/Parental Advisory/+DVD) [ECD] [PA]
Two giants of contemporary music team up for the first in MTV's "Ultimate Mash-Ups" series, inspired by the bootleg trend of mixing different songs together. After performing a concert in which they blended together each other'ssongs, Jay and the Park went into the studio and recorded polished versions of the resulting mash-ups. With a looser, more hip-hop feel than most rap-metal, it includes the single 'Numb/Encore'. The DVD features the original concert and in-the-studio footage. SKU: 6577576

Yes I Am
Personnel: Melissa Etheridge (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Waddy Wachtel (electric guitar); James Fearnley (accordion); Ian McLagen (organ); Scott Thurston (keyboards); Pino Palladino, Kevin McCormick, David Sutton (bass); Mauricio Fritz Lewak (drums, percussion). Recorded at A&M Studios, Los Angeles, California. "Come To My Window" won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. "Come To My Window" and "I'm The Only One" were both nominated for Best Rock Song. On her fourth album, Melissa Etheridge continues to write songs with a strong rock base and no sign of giving in to any kinds of trends. With the one-two punch of "I'm The Only One" and "Come To My Window," Etheridge manages to break through to bigger success on her own terms. YES I AM continues with tales of love within the lives of ordinary people while still managingto touch on a few different themes. "All American Girl" mentions AIDS, while "Talking To My Angel" is about growing up alienated in a small town. An added bonus is the inclusion of "I Will Never Be The Same," a previously unreleased track which was one of a few Etheridge songs featured in the movie WELCOME HOME ROXIE CARMICHAEL. SKU: 4133994

ChangesBowie
Personnel includes:David Bowie (vocals, guitar, stylogram, saxophone, keyboards); John Lennon (vocals, guitar); Mick Ronson, Carlos Alomar, Earl Slick, Robert Fripp, Nile Rodgers, Stevie Ray Vaughan (guitar); Lenny Pickett (clarinet, tenor saxophone); Steve Elson (flute, baritone saxophone); Stan Harrison (alto & tenor saxophone); David Sanborn (saxophone); Mike Garson (piano, keyboards); Roy Bittan (piano, drums); Rick Wakeman (piano); Brian Eno (keyboards); Herbie Flowers, Willie Weeks, Carmine Rojas (bass); Mick Woodmansey, Aynsley Dunbar, Andy Newmark, Omar Hakim (drums); Larry Washington (congas); Pablo Rosario (percussion); Robin Clark, Luther Vandross, Tony Visconti, Frank Simms, George Simms, David Spinner (background vocals). Long before Madonna started changing hairstyles between albums, David Bowie set the standard (and continues to do so) for chameleonic music styles that go beyond mere hair dye. CHANGESBOWIE is the perfect road map that allows the listener to hear the different pitstops Bowie made into the mid-'80s. Throughout the '70s, Bowie's personas included space alien ("Ziggy Stardust," "Suffragette City"), theatrical raconteur ("Rebel, Rebel"), blue-eyed soulster ("Young Americans") and Thin White Duke ("Golden Years"). After spending time in Berlin under self-imposed exile ("Heroes"), he returned to the West and within a few short years, David Bowie was back on the top of the charts thanks to a dance-rock collaboration with Nile Rodgers ("Let's Dance"). Bowie's constant need to reinvent himself is so pervasive that upon originally releasing this collection on Rykodisc, he returned to the studio and recorded an updated, '90s remix of "Fame" that sounds as if Art Of Noise were his back-up band. 30th Anniversary Anthology
This set containsall the essentials of Procol Harum, spread out over three discs. The first disc contains the band's self-titled debut and its follow-up, SHINE ON BRIGHTLY; the second disc brings together its third and fourth issues, A SALTY DOG and HOME; and the final disc contains 17 songs that are either singles, outtakes, or alternate versions. It is this third disc that contains Procol Harum's best-known song (and the band's first hit), "A Whiter Shade of Pale." A booklet provides a brief but thoughtful thumbnail history of the band that traces the group's beginnings as an R&B outfit called the Paramounts. This music has aged quite nicely in the decades since it was written and recorded. Propulsive, regal, mysterious and soulful, there was no one else like Procol Harum. SKU: 4124904

Music Box
Personnel: Mariah Carey (vocals); Michael Landau (guitar); Walter Afanasieff (Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards, synthesizers, programming); Dave Hall (keyboards, synthesizers, programming); Babyface (keyboards, drums); David Cole (keyboards); Kayo (bass), Robert Clivilles (drums); Ren Klyce, Gary Cirimelli, Ricky Crespo, Shawn Lucas, James T. Alfano (programming); Mark C. Rooney, Cindy Mizelle, Melonie Daniels, Kelly Price, Shanrae Price (background vocals). Producers include: Walter Afanasieff, C&C Music Factory, Dave Hall, Babyface, Daryl Simmons. Engineers: Dana Jon Chappelle, David Gleeson, Manny LaCarrubba. "Dreamlover" was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female in the 36th Annual Grammy Awards. "Hero" was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards. Mariah Carey's ascension to the top of the charts is an affirmation of her deep affection for the roots of popular music, to wit, gospel and R&B. She's not the first pop vocalist to find commercial and artistic bliss in black music, but her efforts are among the most heartfelt and convincing. And with the surehanded support of contemporary music's most creative producers and songwriters, Carey has developed a smooth, brassy sound signature all her own. What makes it all happen is that luminous, vaulting voice, one of the surest most impassioned instruments in all of pop, capable of leaps in register most vocalists can't even imagine, yet alone execute. Her dark ornaments and trilling upper register cries on "Dream Lover" make this plain. On power pop ballads like "Hero" and "Anytime You Need A Friend"--with their gospelish "To dream the impossible dream/The greatest love of all" cadences--Carey's over-the-top expressive range sparks these arrangements to one emotionalcatharsis after another. It is Carey's new found restraint--reining in her voice to suit the emotional fabric of each tune--that marks her growing maturity. The lush understatement of her singing and Walter Afanasieff's charts on the title tune, allow the tender grace of the song's lyrics to shine through--without superfluos vocal acrobatics. Ultimately it's Carey's reserves of vocal power, barely constrained on "Never Forget You" (with Babyface), that brings her fans back time and again. SKU: 1006442

Sound Design Vol.1 (Mixed By Marques Wyatt)
This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Marques Wyatt. L.A. deep house ambassador Marques Wyatt affects a New York style on this mix of classics from the 1999-2000 clubbing season. Starting out with Willy Washington's "Ain't No Runnin' Away" (featuring Paula Ralph), Wyatt gives props to the New York sound that dominated house music at the start of the 21st century. Preferring melody and instrumentation (flutes, conga drums, and strings) to relentless drum machine-made beats, the tracks on SOUND DESIGN V. 1 are well-crafted dance floor hits that are also fully rendered songs. MAW's "Elements of Life," Isolee's "Beau Mot Plage," and MKL vs. Soy Sos's "Her Song" are all memorable numbers with a distinct chorus and verse. Tedd Patterson's "Roots" and Aquarian Dream's poignant "Love and Tears" tell their stories over 125 bpm tempos. Also included is the lovely "Orixas,"a Brazilian-inspired hit sung in Portuguese. Wyatt's sequencing is top notch, yet his mixing is very subtle on this disc, with only one extended blend and a little filtering here and there, letting the strengths of these cuts speak for themselves. Tropicana Nights
Personnel: Paquito D'Rivera (soprano & alto saxophones, clarinet, background vocals); Brenda Feliciano, Lucrecia (vocals); Manuel Valera (alto saxophone); Andres Boiarsky, Oscar Feldman (tenor saxophone); Marshall McDonald (baritone saxophone); Mike Ponella, Diego Urcola, Gustavo Bergalli, Adalberto Lara, Alejandro Odio (trumpet); Noah Bless, Jimmy Bosch, Luis Bonilla, William Cepeda (trombone); Oriente Lopez (piano, background vocals); Dario Eskenazi (piano); David Oquendo (guitar, background vocals); Joe Santiago (bass); Mark Walker (drums); Joe Gonzales (bongos); Milton Cardona (congas); Ralph Irizarry (timbales); Beatriz Hernandez (background vocals). Includes liner notes by Paquito D'Rivera. "Tropicana Nights" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition. TROPICANA NIGHTS was nominated for the 2000 Latin Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album. This Cuban-born, New York-raised alto saxophonist/composer has done more than many musicians hope to in a lifetime. Rivera has composed for symphony orchestras; recorded with musical giants Dizzy Gillespie, Mario Bauza, and Astor Piazzola, as well as pop singer Gloria Estefan; and led his own ensembles. His saxophone style descends from that of Charlie Parker, buthis reach (and grasp) extends to Coltrane and beyond. TROPICANA NIGHTS is an affectionate, exhilaratingly fun tribute to the big-band era of Cuba--the dance-bands of yesteryear: who they influenced and who influenced them. From the rousing "Mambo a la Kenton" that kicks off the proceedings to the soaring yet melancholy vocal (by Brenda Feliciano) "Siboney" to the suave, debonair "Old Miami Sax," this NIGHT is loaded with mercurial, passionate saxophone and tight, vibrant expert arrangements (by D'Rivera and the legendary Chico O'Farrill). Mambo, son, bolero, danzon--it's all here, and no one treats any of it like a museum piece. TROPICANA NIGHTS is a grand time waiting to happen. SKU: 1025787

Who Else
Personnel: Jeff Beck (guitar); Mark John (acoustic guitar); Jennifer Batten (electric & midi guitars); Bob Loveday (violin); Clive Bell (flute); Jan Hammer (keyboards, drums); Tony Hymas (keyboards); Simon Wallace (synthesizer); Randy Hope-Taylor, Pino Palladino (bass); Manu Katche (drums, percussion); Steve Alexander (drums). "What Mama Said" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. Jeff Beck's first all-instrumental album in a decade finds him tossing a few contemporary peppers into his pot of musical virtuosity. Reuniting once again with GUITAR SHOP keyboardist Tony Hymas, Beck maintains a balance between contemporary, Art Of Noise-flavored tracks ("Space For The Papa," "TX138") complete with delays, techno beats and looped guitars, and a reunion with '70s fusion running buddy Jan Hammer on the heavier, Van Halen-esque "Even Odds." Beck's musical range continues to impress as he easily moves between emotive blues phrasing ("Brush With The Blues"), fleet-fingered noodling ("Blast From The East") and more ethereal numbers that bring to mind Carlos Santana's solo work ("Hip-Notica.") Beck's talent truly shines when he tackles Donal Lunny's "Declan." On it, guitar histrionics give way to Celtic arrangements that find Beck's guitar delicately dancingwith Clive Bell's flute as images of foggy moors and rolling green hills float along. The brief solo piece "Another Place" could have been be an Adrian Legg outtake. SKU: 1003109

Live Cream Vol.2
Cream: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Jack Bruce (vocals, bass, harmonica); Ginger Baker (drums). Recorded live at Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California on October 4, 1968 & at Winterland, San Francisco, California from March 9-10, 1968. All tracks have been digitally remastered. During the brief three years that Cream was together, they set the standard for future blues-rock power trios by redefining the role of each corner of this musical triangle. While the traditional route was to have only the guitarist take a solo, the instrumental prowess of both Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce meant that a degree of improvisation was possible from all corners. Unlike VOLUME I, this sampling of Cream's live performances features less obscure numbers from the band's catalog. These recordings were taken from 1968 live performances at the Oakland Coliseum and San Francisco's Winterland. Included in this set are the epic "Tales of Brave Ulysses," the wah-wah-laden "White Room" and the psychedelic glory that is "Sunshine Of Your Love." The only time that Cream indulges in its improvisational side is during a 15-minute instrumental version ofJames Bracken's "Steppin' Out." Starting it out as a swinging shuffle, the gifted trio eventually launches into a mini-showcase of its playing ability that was indicative of the creative atmosphere encouraged during live performances of those times.
