Blow Up, The [Remastered]
Television: Tom Verlaine (vocals, guitar); Richard Lloyd (guitar, background vocals); Fred Smith (bass, background vocals); Billy Ficca (drums). Recorded live in 1978. Includes liner notes by Robert Christgau and John Piccarella. All tracks have been digitally remastered. The New York rock scene was never known for producing expansive instrumentalists. Its guitar heroes--a Robert Quine or even a jazz-traveler like Bill Frisell--tend to go inward. For a time, the seminal band Television, led by master guitarist and all-around dreamer Tom Verlaine, was a marked exception. While Verlainewrote and sang crafty songs like "Venus de Milo" and "Prove It," his band is still remembered for nights of slashing interplay with 2nd guitar foil Richard Lloyd and Verlaine's Bolero solos on the punk flamenco epics "Little Johnny Jewel" and "Marquee Moon." THE BLOW-UP, a double-CD reissue of a 1982 ROIR cassette-only release, captures Television at its peak in raw live performances circa 1978. "Marquee Moon" was Verlaine's very own "Dark Star." The explosive near-15 minute version included here seethes with barely controlled musical wanderlust. As befits ROIR's reputation, the sound is minimally acceptable but the music documented here easily transcends the shortcomings. SKU: 1014623

Piano, The
Previously available only as a limited edition, Japanese import. Personnel: Herbie Hancock (piano). Engineers: Fred Catero; David Rubinson; Tomoo Suzuki; Brian Bell. Liner Note Authors: Herbie Hancock; David Rubinson;Bob Belden. Recording information: CBS Studios, Tokyo, Japan (10/25/1978 - 10/26/1978). Herbie Hancock never really focused on solo piano. However, this 1978 release, which was previously only available in Japan, is a rare gem in the Hancock discography. Thanks to this overdue 2004 reissue, the listener is invited to explore the musical mind of this pianist in an up-close and intimate setting. All 11 tracks on THE PIANO are quite reflective, with Hancock employing many rich chordal textures and winding melodic gestures throughout. On "My Funny Valentine," Hancock combines the harmonic palette of Bill Evans with his own distinctive phrasing and unexpected modal shifts. His own composition "Blue Otani" is the only bluesy piece on this disc, and here Hancock slyly suggests the stride piano tradition without ever really playing in this style. "Harvest Time" is the most atmospheric piece on the album. As Hancock's fingers glide over the keys, one can almost envision the first blush of daybreak on a farm. For anybody seeking to better understand the conceptual and technical wizardry of Hancock, THE PIANO is a priceless find. SKU: 6521319

Blade
Full title: Blade: Music From And Inspired By The Motion Picture. Producers include: KLC, DJ Premier, The Guru, Nashiem Myrick. Compilation producer: Patricia Joseph. Starring Wesley Snipes as a human/vampire hybrid superhero who attempts to save humanity from vampirism, BLADE has a highly stylized, futuristic-goth feel, full of shadowy images and dark, scary corners. The accompanying soundtrack album matches the ominous mood of the film quite well, employing some of the finest contemporary hardcore hip-hoppers to get the job done. Unlike many soundtrack albums that put together a mishmosh of mass-marketed songs that bear little relation to the film itself, the BLADE soundtrack features songs composed exclusively for the film. Mystikal's sinister-sounding "Edge of the Blade" and the Majesty/Bizzy Bone collaboration "Blade 4 Glory" are the mostdirectly related, but every tune here creates a mood very similar to that of the state-of-the-art vampire flick. Preacher's Wife, The (Original Soundtrack)
Producers: Mervyn Warren, Whitney Houston, Stephen Lipson, Rickey Minor, Babyface, David Foster. Engineers: Frank Wolf, Michael White, Heff Moraes, Joseph Magee, Wayne Linsey, Paul Ericksen, Brad Gilderman, Felipe Elgueta, Tony Shepard, Ron Banks. THE PREACHER'S WIFE was nominated for a1988 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "I Believe In You And Me" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. That renaissance gal is at it again. As in THE BODYGUARD, Whitney Houston does double duty as star and soundtrack provider for THE PREACHER'S WIFE. Don't look for her to be sticking to the commercial pop-R&B sound that served her so well on her last soundtrack album, though. THE PREACHER'S WIFE finds Houston reaching back to her roots in gospel, and collaborating with some stellar gospel artists, including her mother, Cissy. Several cuts here, including "Hold On, Help Is On The Way" and "I Go To The Rock," find the soulful Georgia Mass Choir supporting Houston in her return to the fold. On "He's All Over Me," Houston is joined by gospel great Shirley Caesar as well. On a more modern tip, Houston delivers "Somebody Bigger Than You And I," accompanied by a veritable who's-who of contemporary R&B, including her husband, Bobby Brown, and Brown's New Edition bandmates Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant. THE PREACHER'S WIFE not only shows where Houston is headed, it proves she hasn't forgotten where she's been. SKU: 6348091

Beta Band, The
Personnel includes: Martin Hoyland (vocals, guitar, piano, bells, spoons); Kingsley (vocals); Neil Richardson (trumpet). This Scottish quartet bounces from Four Freshman-style pre-rock balladry to menacing hiphop and demented Elvis-style rockabilly that has mutated into an amalgam of the Bonzo Dog Band and Roy Wood's Wizzard. And that's just on the first song! After that, singer Stephen Mason (who sounds uncannily like Pink Floyd's Roger Waters) and the Beta Band crew sound like the sort of group that would rather talk endlessly about other bands' records than make its own. This fact is borne out by the way the sweetly poppy and relatively normal "Round The Bend" devolves into Mason'senthusiastic spoken comparison of late '60s Beach Boys albums. The Beta Band's members aren't mere nutters, however, as the lovely, Soft Machine-like "It's Not Too Beautiful" and the extended piano coda of "The Hard One" prove. This album is clearly the product of four men with more a superabundance of ideas and a contagious try-anything-once attitude. SKU: 5048587

History Past Present And Future Vol.1
Personnel includes: Michael Jackson (vocals, various instruments); L.T.B., Vincent Price (vocals); Jeff Mirinov, Michael Thompson, Rob Hoffman, Jen Leigh, David Williams, Marlo Henderson, Christopher Currell, Paul Jackson, Dean Parks (guitar); Bill Bottrell (guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, percussion); Steve Lukather (guitar, bass); Paul Peabody (violin); David Paich (piano, keyboards, synthesizer); Rod Temperton, Chuck Wild (keyboards, synthesizer); Steve Porcaro (keyboards, synthesizer, programming); Greg Phillinganes (keyboards, Rhodes, synthesizer); Nathan East (bass); Ndugu Chancler, John Robinson (drums); Ollie E. Brown, Richard Heath (percussion); Christa Larson, Julia Waters, Maxine Waters, Oren Waters (background vocals). Producers include: Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Teddy Riley, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Janet Jackson. HISTORY BOOK 1 contains one disc of Jackson's greatest hits and one disc of all-new songs. It features a 52-page booklet with liner notes by Janet Jackson, Steven Spielberg, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and Elizabeth Taylor, as well as many never-before-seen photographs. HISTORY BOOK 1 was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year. "You Are Not Alone" was nominated for Grammy Awards for Song Of The Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, and the Michael Jackson-Janet Jackson duet "Scream" was nominated for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. Michael Jackson's monumental collection HISTORY BOOK 1 seeks to make two points. The first disc--chock full of hits spanning Jackson's Epic Records solo career--tries to establish how the so-called King of Pop earned that nickname in the first place; the second disc, featuring fifteen new, star-studded tracks, makes a case for him holding onto that royal moniker well into the next century. And though many may dismiss both directives as the product of Jackson camp hype, once the music begins it's hard to deny him any title he wishes to bestow upon himself. All of the songs on HISTORY's first disc have already been ingrained in the minds of the radio-listening, MTV-watching public. From the funky disco of 1979's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough,"through the countless and diverse THRILLER hits ("Billie Jean," "The Girl Is Mine," etc.), to the anthemic peace-in-our-time ballad "Heal The World," Jackson's star-power-fueled singles invested the mainstream with black pop's soulfulness to the point where black pop became the mainstream. And Jackson, subsequently, became pop's king. On the second disc, Jackson tries to retain a hold over his current empire while moving toward a more street-wise, hip-hop-tinged pop. "Scream," a duet with sister Janet, is prototypical. The beats are cold and stone-hard, and effuse grey noise electric discharges. Yet after multiple listens the song's simple chorus and minimalist melody imbed themselves in the cranium. Same goes for the mildly controversial "They Don't Care About Us," where Jackson near-raps a stream of nonsequit SKU: 1009664

Will The Circle Be Unbroken Vol.1 (30th Anniversary Remastered Edition)
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band: Les Thompson (vocals, mandolin); Jimmie Fadden (vocals, harp); Jim Ibbotson (vocals, drums); Jeff Hanna (vocals, washboard); John McEuen (banjo, mandolin). Additional personnel includes: Maybelle Carter (vocals, guitar, autoharp); Jimmy Martin, Doc Watson, Merle Travis (vocals, guitar); Earl Scruggs (guitar, banjo); Vassar Clememts (guitar, fiddle); Randy Scruggs (guitar, autoharp); Pete "Oswald" Kirby, Norman Blake (dobro); Roy "Junior" Huskey, Ellis Padgett (bass). Recorded At Woodland Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. It's ironic that the 30-year anniversary of this classic album coincides with the runaway success of the O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU soundtrack, one of the best-selling movie soundtracks in history. Both albums find contemporary folk-rock musicians reaching back to the sounds of bluegrass, country, and folk (often lumped together under the heading "old-timey music"). The difference is that when the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band did it in 1972 it was a new (even risky) idea. Harry Smith's 1952 ANTHOLOGY OF FOLK MUSIC had inspired rock-generation kids like those who would form the Dirt Band to seek out traditional American music. The NGDB went a step further with this triple album by getting the old-timey artists themselves to collaborate on a tribute to the traditional American musical tapestry. Thus, we have Doc Watson singing "Tennessee Stud," Roy Acuff taking on the Hank Williams spiritual "I Sawthe Light," and Earl Scruggs picking the "Nashville Blues," with the Dirt Band and various country/bluegrass luminaries backing them up. The most amazing thing about WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN is that it all works so well and fits together so seamlessly. An undertaking like this could easily have been a train wreck; instead it's a triumph. SKU: 1079454

Yesterdays
YESTERDAYS contains material from the first 2 Yes albums (YES and TIME AND A WORD), plus a version of Paul Simon's "America" (from THE AGE OF ATLANTIC album, released July 1972). Yes: Peter Banks, Steve Howe (vocals, guitar); Chris Squire (vocals, bass); Jon Anderson (vocals); Tony Kaye (organ); Rick Wakeman (keyboards); Bill Bruford (drums). Producers: Yes, Eddie Offord, Paul Clay, Tony Colton. Engineers: Eddie Offord, Gerald Chevin. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Following the massive commercial and artistic success of albums like FRAGILE, THE YES ALBUM andCLOSE TO THE EDGE, Yes released this 1974 collection to remind their audience of the band's beginnings. YESTERDAYS features cuts from the first two Yes albums as well as two previously unreleased early recordings. The early Yes sound was much less complex, closer in spirit to the more forward-looking groups of the late-'60s. "Looking Around" features visceral riffing from original guitarist Peter Banks and simple, buoyant organ from Tony Kaye. "Survival" and "Then" find Jon Anderson being to explore the socio-philosophical themes he would develop later in the band's career. A nice surprise comes in the form of a Simon & Garfunkel cover; "America," making plain Yes' initial debt to '60s folk-rock. YESTERDAYS is an intriguing snapshot of a band on their way to something as yet unheard. SKU: 4112196

Indestructible
Rancid: Tim Armstrong, Lars Frederiksen (vocals, guitar); Matt Freeman (vocals, bass); Brett Reed (drums). Ten years after Rancid's debut album, INDESTRUCTIBLE shows how far the CA punks have come from their beginnings. Initially, even their fans admitted their strong resemblance to the early Clash sound, but starting with 1998's LIFE WON'T WAIT they began expanding their punk-plus-ska sound. Listening to INDESTRUCTIBLE, it's hard to imagine that Rancid ever sounded like anyone but themselves. Certainly the influence of late-1970s British punk and ska bands can still be felt, but the sophisticated lyrics and carefully conceived (though still driving) arrangements are strictly suigeneris. It's also heartening to note that they haven't lost any of their edge; tracks like the snarling "David Courteney" and the Motorhead-meets-Bad Brains fury of "Out of Control" nearly leap off the disc and throttle the unsuspecting listener. Now that's punk rock. SKU: 1086199

Greatest Hits [SACD]
This is a multi-channel Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. Alice In Chains: Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Layne Staley (vocals); Mike Starr, Mike Inez (bass); Sean Kinney (drums, percussion). Producers include: Dave Jerden, Toby Wright, Rick Parasher, Alice In Chains. MIA for the latter half of the '90s and into the new millennium, Alice In Chains added GREATEST HITS to the list of seemingly posthumous releases in a canon whose last studio album was a 1995 self-titled release. This bare-bones 10-song sampler does serve as a quick overview for neophytes interested in one of the seminal bands to emerge from a generation of grunge bands including Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. Between Jerry Cantrell's thick, sludgy riffs and Layne Staley's primal howl, AIC had the market cornered on nihilism. Four cuts on this compilation come from the band's 1991 masterpiece DIRT and serve as a centerpiece, the most compelling being the harrowing "Rooster" (a tribute to Cantrell's Vietnam vet dad), the hypnotic isolationism of "Them Bones," and the plodding despondency of "Angry Chair." Elsewhere, AIC throws some curves with "I Stay Away" (featuring lush orchestration that gilds this dark lily) and the unexpectedly tender 1995 cut "Heaven Beside You." For those with a casual interest in Alice In Chains, GREATESTHITS will work well. Hardcore fans are directed to the more generous NOTHING SAFE: THE BEST OF THE BOX. SKU: 1075147

Best Of Miles Davis, The
Full title: The Best Of Miles Davis: The Capitol And Blue Note Years. Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Lee Konitz, Cannonball Adderley, Jackie McLean (alto saxophone); Jimmy Heath (tenor saxophone); Gerry Mulligan (baritone saxophone); J.J. Johnson, Kai Winding (trombone); Junior Collins (French horn); John Barber (tuba); Horace Silver, Al Haig, Hank Jones, Gil Coggins (piano); Joe Shulman, Oscar Pettiford, Percy Heath, Sam Jones (bass); Art Blakey, Max Roach, Kenny Clarke (drums). Producer: Pete Rugolo, Alfred Lion. Compilation producer: Michael Cuscuna. Engineers include: Doug Hawkins, Rudy Van Gelder. Recorded in New York, New York on January 21, 1949; WOR Studios, New York, New York on May 9, 1952 and April 20, 1953; the Van Gelder Studio, Hackensack, New Jersey on March 6, 1954 and March 9, 1958. Davis spent the most groundbreaking years of his career on Columbia; volume eightof that label's "This Is Jazz" series offers a survey, however inherently limited, of his work from 1955 to 1965, a period that covers his two classic quintets, the recording of KIND OF BLUE and his first work with Gil Evans. What THE BEST OF MILES DAVIS includes is material from BIRTH OF THE COOL, represented by three cuts from that LP, and from sessions done between 1952 and 1954 that featured musicians like J.J. Johnson, Jackie McLean, Jimmy Heath, Percy Heath and Art Blakey. It's an interesting period, in that neither Blue Note nor Davis had quite developed into the icons they were about to become. Ironically, with the final two cuts on this collection (from 1959's SOMETHING ELSE), both the label and Miles can be heard doing precisely what they became best known for: the album, released under Cannonball Adderly's name, imparts the smoky, noir atmosphere that characterized Blue Note's reputation as the home of hard bop, while Davis, radically reinterpreting standards like "Autumn Leaves," sounds at once pointillistic, introspective and decidedly badass. Wash, The
THE WASH is a good-natured romp that showcases not only the musical talents of lauded West Coast rappers Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, but the pair's unexpected acting abilities as well. Centered around the action at a car wash, the film boasts a soundtrack that unsurprisingly features some of the best hip-hop you're likely to find in our outside the vicinity of the silver screen. Naturally, there are tracks from Dre and Snoop, including the pumping mission statement "On the Blvd.,"but other high-end rappers such as Xzibit and Busta Rhymes are on hand as well, making this soundtrack a wealth of hip-hop riches. To keep things from getting too monochromatic, neo-soul crooner Bilal offers a tune as well; his "Bring 2" is a churning, funky number full of melodic twists and turns, effectively balancing off the work of his rapping peers.
