Tanto Tempo
Personnel includes: Bebel Gilberto (vocals); Celso Fonseca, Luis De Monte (guitar); Joao Donato (piano); Robertinho Silva (drums); Joao Parahyba, Carlinhos Brown (percussion); Smoke City, Thievery Corporation, Amon Tobin, Mario Caldato, Jr. Recorded at Wah Wah Studio, Sao Paulo, Brazil; Gloria Mix Studio, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil; Dada Studio, Brussels. Bebel Gilberto was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist. TANTO TEMPO was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best Musica Popular Brasileira Album. Bebel Gilberto is the daughter of Brazilian singer/guitarist Joao Gilberto. TANTO TEMPO, her debut release, brings a contemporary sheen to classic bossa novas. Acoustic accompaniment predominates, with the addition of occasional electronica, making this collection a perfect reflection of the late-20th century two-way street between traditional Brazilian bossa nova andthe American producers who covet its easy, sexy sound. Gilberto's voice is assured and steady. As with other South American singers gaining attention in the States, such as Peru's Susana Baca, she's a model of restrained passion, her phrasing subtly and sensuously caressing her music. Gilberto sings mostly in Portuguese, but performs a few songs in English, such as the dreamy "August Day Song." "Lonely" finds her paired with Washington D.C. downtempo producers Thievery Corporation, while the classic "So Nice" is still the perfect airy, breezy hammock song. TANTO TEMPO is highly recommended for aficionados of both classic and modern Brazilian pop. SKU: 1074573

Doo Bop [Digipak]
Personnel includes: Miles Davis (trumpet); A.B. Money, J.R. (vocals); Easy Mo Bee (rap vocals). Engineers include: Kirk Yano, Bruce Moore, John McGlain. Recorded at Unique Recording, New York, New York. This is the recording Miles Davis was working on when he checked into the hospital in mid-September of 1991. With his passing on the 28th of September, a major epoch in American music came to a close. Somewhere in the back of his mind he probably knew that hewas living on borrowed time, because earlier that summer he'd finally consented to make a nostalgic return to the classic music that emerged from his collaborations with Gil Evans (MILES & QUINCY AT MONTREAUX). But as the contemporary sounds of DOO-BOP indicate, Miles Davis was incapable of sustained backwards glances. As the rapology of J.R., A.B. Money and Easy Mo Bee on "The Doo-Bop Song," "Blow" and "Fantasy" indicates, Miles and his collaborators were still feeling each other out in terms of themes and context. The raps revolve around hangin' with the legendary Davis--let's dim the lights and get down with my man Miles. In terms of dance tracks, the Afro-Cuban airs of "Blow" make it the most successful, while "Fantasy" re-visits Clyde Stubblefield's much sampled "Funky Drummer" beat--via the "Red Clay" chord changes--with hip-happy results. But many of the funky arrangements are a bitch, and Miles sounds funky, lyrical and relaxed. "Chocolate Chip" recalls the ancient doo wop and R&B antecedents of modern funk, including a nod to James Brown, while "Duke Booty" presents the modern perspective on funk. And "High Speed Chase" anticipates the current acid jazz fascination with cool blues and boogaloo grooves of the Blue Note and CTI studio styles, as Miles blows bumblebee lines over fatback organ, vibes and a variety of street sounds. No More Tears [Remastered]
Available on Mini Disc on Epic (46795). NOTES: Personnel: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Zakk Wylde (guitar); John Sinclair (keyboards); Bob Daisley, Michael Inez (bass); Randy Castillo (drums). Engineers: Duane Baron, John Purdell, Michael Bosley. Includes liner notes by Phil Alexander. Digitally remastered by Stephen Marcussen (Marcussen Mastering). After an extended bout with alcoholism and drug addiction, Ozzy Osbourne emerged clean and sober for the recording of 1991's NO MORE TEARS, one of his most successful solo albums ever. Soon after the album's release, Ozzy stated publicly that the album's supporting tour would be his last, and dubbed the outing "No More Tours." As it turned out, the tour was far from Ozzy's last. Ozzy is joined by guitarist Zakk Wylde, drummer Randy Castillo, while original Ozzy solo member Bob Daisley and newcomer Mike Inez (whoeventually became a member of Alice in Chains) switch off on bass. Renowned metal producer Duane Baron helped Ozzy achieve a rocking and heavy sound throughout, as Motorhead's Lemmy Kilmeister contributed to the writing of several songs. Several videos for songs received extensive airplay on MTV's Headbanger's Ball, including the epic (and slightly Beatles-esque) title track, the fierce rocker "Mr. Tinkertrain," plus three melodic and more sedate compositions ("Mama, I'm Coming Home," "Time After Time," and "Road to Nowhere"). NO MORE TEARS was one the '90's most popular and enduring heavy metal releases, and one of Ozzy Osbourne's finest efforts. SKU: 1071275

TV Eye (1977 Live)
Personnel: Iggy Pop (vocals), Ricky Gardiner, Stacey Heydon (guitar), Scott Thurston (guitar, piano, harmonica, synthesizer), Tony Sales (bass), Hunt Sales (drums). Recorded live at Agora, Cleveland, Ohio on March 21 & 22, 1977; Aragon, Chicago, Illinois on March 28, 1977 and Uptown Theatre, Kansas City, Missouri on October 26, 1977. Although Iggy Pop's previous band, the legendary Stooges, were the subject of several live albums (many were contractual obligations of varying sound quality), Iggy's first officially released live album was 1978's TV EYE LIVE. Iggy is backed by a fine group of musicians, including none other than David Bowie on keyboards, and Tony and Hunt Sales on bass and drums (the two would join Bowie in the '80s as part of his Tin Machine project), all of whom augment Pop's savage rock perfectly. Recorded during several stops on his 1977 comeback tour, TV EYE LIVE helped connect the proto-punk rock of Iggy's early days with the industrial grind of his late-'70s work. Includedare several inspired renditions of such Stooges standards as the opening "TV Eye," "I Got A Right," the minimalist crawl of "Dirt" and the sleaze anthem "I Wanna Be Your Dog." Other highlights include selections from Iggy's solo recordings--the supercharged "Lust For Life" (a hit nearly 20 years later when featured in the film TRAINSPOTTING), "Funtime," "Sixteen" and "Nightclubbing." Fairly short for a live album (barely 36 minutes long), TV EYE LIVE is a breathless, adrenaline-charged shot of Iggy Pop that will leave many craving for more. SKU: 1081383

Ethiopiques Vol.4 (Ethio Jazz & Musique Instrumentale 1969-1974)
Full title: Ethiopiques Vol. 4: Ethio Jazz & Musique, Instrumentale 1969-1974. The selections on ETHIOPIQUES VOL. 4 are taken from two previously released albums, ETHIOPIAN MODERN INSTRUMENTAL HITS and YEKATIT: ETHIO JAZZ. Personnel includes: Mulatu Astatke, Fekade Amde Meskel. The fourth in a series of compilations of early-to-present Ethiopian jazz, this release focuses on instrumentals. Heavily horn-based, the ensembles are sonically multi-faceted, including an almost psychedelic electric guitar and acoustic and electric bass, vibes, and piano. This volume focuses on the arrangers and composers of the late '60s and early '70s, highlighting both the Amha Records label and innovative bandleader Mulatu Astatke. The arrangements combine traditional jazz elements with Ethiopian folk tunes, creating a foreign yet pleasantly familiar feel. From the lilting saxophone of "Tezeta" (Nostalgia), to the jumping organ of "Yegelle Tezeta" (MyOwn Memory), each song carries its own story, relayed by many tempos. The most percussive, "Munaye" (My Muna), speaks with African beats accompanied by bongos and bell-like sounds accented with jazz guitar solos and well-timed horn bursts. Various stringed instruments provide a warmly personal feel. The cover photo, featuring Duke Ellington holding an African instrument as he jams with Mulatu Astatke, highlights the album's Ethiopian jazz sound. SKU: 1026305

Through The Looking Glass
Siouxsie & The Banshess: Siouxsie Sioux(vocals); John Carruthers (guitar); Steve Severin (bass); Budgie (drums). Additional personnel: Gini Ball (violin); Jocelyn Pook (viola); Martin McCarrick (cello, keyboards); Julie Aliss (harp); Martin Dobson (saxophone); Luke Tunney (trumpet); Peter Thorns (trombone). Recorded at Abbey Road Studio 2, London, England in August and September 1986. THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS is a collection of cover versions of the band's favorite songs. By the late 80's, most Siouxse & the Banshees fans must have realized by now to expect anything with a new release, after all, this was a band that could alternate between challenging psychedelic goth (HYAENA) and more melodic, pop-oriented material (TINDERBOX). So when the band decided to issue an album comprised entirely of cover songs by bands they admired, 1987's THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, it shouldn't have come as much of a shock. As expected, the band injects their own instantly identifiable sound into these rock classics, rarely ever simply covering the songs note for note. Highlights include inspired re-readings of the Sparks' "This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us," Iggy Pop's "The Passenger," Television's "Little Johnny Jewel," and probably the two most surprising selections of the whole set, the Bob Dylan/Band nugget "This Wheel's on Fire" and the track from Disney's THE JUNGLE BOOK - "Trust in Me." Sticks And Stones
New Found Glory: Jordan Pundik (vocals); Chad Gilbert, Steve Klein (guitar); Ian Grushka (bass); Cyrus Bolooki (drums). Additional personnel: Mark Hoppus (bass); Matt Skiba, Danny Andriano, Bane, What Feeds The Fire, Rusty Pistachio, Toby Morse (background vocals). Recorded at DML Studios and Signature Sound, San Diego, California; Larabee West Studios, West Hollywood, California; NRG Studios, North Hollywood, California. Fast, loud, and full of attitude, these Florida boys have got everything it takes to make it as a punk band. The trick is that--as they've also proved on previous releases--they've got the hooks, harmonies, and rhythmic savoir faire to come across as a convincing pop group, if you like your pop on the hard side. While every tune on STICKS AND STONES teems with driving, hard-edged guitars and bristles with pounding drums and breakneck bass lines, it doesn't stop there. Though they're not exactly Steely Dan (and wouldn't THAT be a trip), New Found Glory utilizes plenty of melodic and harmonic smarts to spice up their sound withoutdetracting one bit from the viscerality of it all. They even throw a few left hooks into the groove now and then, and how many of their earthbound peers can claim that? SKU: 1073219

Crazy Cajun Recordings, The
Personnel includes: Doug Kershaw, Rusty Kershaw. Obscurities and previously unreleased tracks by the original Ragin' Cajun, recorded (approximately) in the late '50s to the early '70s (i.e., before his crossover from the country charts). As might be expected, thesesongs are all over the stylistic map; there's rockabilly ("Hey Mae"), country reggae (a nifty cover of Johnny Nash's "Hold Me Tight"), a big production with strings ("You Done Me Wrong"), and some stuff that's just plain weird (the echo drenched "Louisian Sun"). Somehow, however, it all seems to cohere, and Kershaw exudes boundless energy throughout. SKU: 5031149

Least Worst Of Type O Negative, The [Digipak] [PA]
Type O Negative: Peter Steele, Kenny Hickey, Josh Silver, Johnny Kelly. Recorded at Systems Two, Brooklyn, New York. Digitally reamastered by George Marino (2000, Sterling Sound Studio, New York, New York). This humbly titled collection offers up some rarities from the catalog of Type O Negative, who've managed to turn their blend of goth, metal, and alt-rock into a long, successful career. Peter Steele's preternaturally deep voice--which bears echoes of everyone from Bauhaus singer Peter Murphy to Crash Test Dummies frontman Brad Roberts--is the band's most instantly recognizable sonic element. As we move through this compilation of alternate versions and other rarities, however, it becomes apparent that the band's knack for Halloween rock (complete with ominous bass lines, creepy guitar riffs, and evil keyboards) and mordant sense of humor are equally important to the overall effect. A goth band with a sense of humor Try song titles like "Black Sabbath (from the Satanic Perspective)" and "The Misinterpretations of Silence and its DisastrousConsequences" on for size. Type O Negative is the goth band for people who think they don't like goth. SKU: 1045075

Hums Of The Lovin' Spoonful
The Lovin' Spoonful: John Sebastian, Zal Yanovsky, Steve Boone, Joe Butler. Additional personnel: Henry Diltz (clarinet); Larry Hankin (Jew's harp). Originally released on Kama Sutra (8054). Includes liner notes by Dennis Diken. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Having recorded four albums (one ofwhich was the soundtrack WHAT'S UP TIGER LILY?) in slightly over a year, the band was on a shockingly strong roll here (which began to unravel after the release of HUMS, when Zal Yanovsky left). Then all of 22-years old, John Sebastian penned all the songs for HUMS. The album opens with "Lovin' You," a perfect confluence of pop and jugband music, and it closes with their biggest hit, "Summer In the City." In between are the classics "Rain On The Roof" and "Nashville Cats," along with a host of lesser-known, but no less ingratiating numbers from the short-lived but prolific Lovin' Spoonful. Avalon [Remastered]
Personnel: Bryan Ferry (vocals, guitar synthesizer, keyboards); Phil Manzanera, Neil Hubbard (guitar); Kermit Moore (cello); Andy Mackay (saxophone); Paul Carrack (piano); Neil Jason, Alan Spenner (bass); Rick Marotta, Andy Newmark (drums); Jimmy Maelen (percussion); Fonzi Thornton, Yanick Etienne (background vocals). Recorded at Compass Point, Nassau, Bahamas and The Power Station, New York, New York. Digitally remastered by Robert C. Ludwig (Masterdisc). From 1975's SIREN through the rest of Roxy Music's albums and his concurrent solo work, Bryan Ferry was leading up to AVALON. The last Roxy Music studio album (it was followed by numerous collections, both live and otherwise), it is the perfect culmination of Ferry's constant striving for the ultimate sophistication. On AVALON, the styles that the band had explored in the past--funk, jazz, and rock--come together to create a texture of remarkable subtlety. The title track is Ferry's finest moment. His suave voice turns the romance all the wayup, while the band plays in a smooth, light jazz-funk groove and guitar notes shimmer like the sun on water. "While My Heart is Still Beating" features Andy Mackay's saxophone drifting in around Phil Manzanera's languid guitar lines. "True to Life," a ballad shot through with reverberation, is the kind of song aching to be played late at night with the lights off. From the almost jaw-dropping elegance of the opening track, "More Than This," to the closing "Tara," a sparse, evocative instrumental, AVALON is Roxy Music's masterpiece. SKU: 1025453

Yardbirds Ultimate
The Yardbirds: Keith Relf (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica, tambourine); Jeff Beck (vocals, guitar, bass); Chris Dreja (guitar, piano, bass, maracas); Jimmy Page (guitar, bass); Anthony "Top" Topham, Eric Clapton (guitar); Paul Samwell-Smith (bass, background vocals); Jim McCarty (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Hamish Grimes (spoken vocals); Al Gorgoni (guitar); Ian Stewart, Nicky Hopkins (piano); Brian Auger (harpsichord); Rick Nielsen (organ); Ron Prentice, John Paul Jones, Joe Macho, Joe Osborne (bass); Dougie Wright, Clem Cattini, Bobby Gregg, Hal Baline (drums); Denny Piercey (bongos); Chris Karan (tabla). Producers: Giorgio Gomelsky, Paul Samwell-Smith, Simom Napier-Bell, Mickie Most. Compilation producer: Gary Stewart. Recorded between 1963 and 1968. Includes liner notes and song annotations by Cub Koda. Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch & Bill Inglot (DigiPrep). With two discs, 52 songs and a 52-page book, this is a wonderful roller coaster ride through the vitally important Yardbirds catalog. Not only did guitarists Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page emerge fromtheir ranks, but the group spearheaded a unique meld of blues and ferocious rock & roll. Formed in the era of British blues bands, the Yardbirds released a series of singles that gave them Top 40 clout. Though this hastened the exit of Clapton, who decried their abandonment of a purer strain of blues, it created some incendiary, forward-looking material anchored in one of the era's underrated rhythm sections. Flush with the experimentation that was fueling the era, there are countless treasures to be heard here. "I Can't Make Your Way" is a mix of skiffle, cowboy swagger, and infectious riffing. "He's Always There" is pre-psych fuzziness combined with cool background vocals and handclaps. And then of course, there are all the hits, richly mastered and delivering a hefty wallop. SKU: 1062249

Miscellaneous T
A collection of original indie singles and 4 previously unreleased songs. They Might Be Giants: John Linnell, John Flansburgh. Additional personnel includes: Lt. Anne Moore (vocals); Peter Permain Thomson (background vocals). Producers include: They Might Be Giants, Bill Krauss. MISCELLANEOUS T is a collection of B-sides, single remixes and rarities that more or less span the period during which They Might Be Giant's first two albums appeared (their self-titled debut and LINCOLN). From the opening "Hey Mr. DJ, I Thought You Said We Has A Deal" to the final "Don't Let's Start," this is a dizzying array of hook-filled songs brimming with catchy absurdities. The duo of John Linnel and John Flansburgh created an incredible catalog of deceptively complex tunes during the second half of the '80s and this collection, along with the aforementioned first releases, tells thetale. This was all prior to their signing to a major label and many of the songs are imbued with an endearing quality of homemade (but never lo-fi) warmth. The three above-mentioned albums have also been collected together as the two-disc set THEN: THE EARLY YEARS. SKU: 1075827

Plays Live (Highlights) [SACD]
PLAYS LIVE (HIGHLIGHTS) are highlights from 4 different North American concerts between December 1982 and Spring 1983. Personnel: Peter Gabriel (vocals, piano, synthesizer); David Rhodes (guitar, background vocals); Larry Fast (piano, synthesizer); Tony Levin (stick, bass, background vocals); Jerry Marotta (drums, percussion, background vocals). PLAYS LIVE is the sound of a man finally freeing himself definitively from the shackles that had bound him for years. Admittedly those shackles, being front man for Genesis, one of the most fascinating and consistently creative prog-rock bands of the early '70s, were hardly severe. But they were a constraint nonetheless. (How often could Peter take some fan screaming "Suppers Ready" when trying to debut new material?) Finally, with a substantial body of solo material (four albums, three of them titled PETER GABRIEL), Gabriel was ready to put the ghost of Genesis to rest. And while he did drive a stake through his art-rock past, Gabriel's incendiary stage presence could not be distinguished. Luckily the live set captured here, which draws heavily from the SECURITY album, is consistently first rate and involving. Not content just to breath fresh life into road-weary veterans like "D.I.Y" or "Solsbury Hill," Gabriel reaches for new emotional heights onstellar versions of "San Jacinto," "Biko" and "And Through The Wire." As a bonus for completists PLAYS LIVE also contains the ultra-rare "I Go Swimming." Overall an excellent portrait of Gabriel's live show. SKU: 1082963

Heartbreaker
Personnel: Ryan Adams (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, banjo, harmonica, piano); David Rawlings (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, banjo, tambourine); Gillian Welch (vocals, acoustic guitar, banjo, bass); Emmylou Harris, Kim Richey, Allison Pierce (vocals); Pat Sansone (piano, organ, background vocals). Recorded at Woodland Studios,Nashville, Tennessee. Whiskeytown were one the mid-'90s wave of bands who approached American roots music--country, folk, singer/songwriter, and combinations thereof--from an alternative rock standpoint. They were apt to be as influenced by Nick Drake and Superchunk as by Johnny Cash and Neil Young. Ryan Adams performs vocal duties for Whiskeytown, and HEARTBREAKER is his first solo album. It's primarily a singer/songwriter affair, with lots of acoustic guitars, gentle drums, subtle keyboards, and back-porch harmony vocals, but there's also a lot of variety and kick. "To Be Young" tears out of the gate like a rollicking out-take from Dylan's HIGHWAY 61 sessions, and the gentle, shimmering, baroque-tinged "Amy" recalls both the Left Banke, and the Beatles in their "Eleanor Rigby" mode. Many tunes--like "To Be the One"--have a bare-bones, dusty, story-telling quality that recalls Dylan, John Prine, Woody Guthrie, and Steve Earle (who Adams slightly resembles vocally) without ever sounding like Adams is aping them. As a bonus, Emmylou Harris and Gillian Welch supply heavenly harmonies. SKU: 1044589

Best Of David Bowie 1969-1974, The
Personnel includes: David Bowie (vocals). Producers: David Bowie, Ken Scott, Gus Dudgeon, Tony Visconti. Includes liner notes by Kevin Cann. Born David Jones, the Londoner who would become David Bowie made a career out of his chameleon-like tendencies and his relentlessly futuristic vision. Though he began in a rather non-rock mode, recording whimsical, Anthony Newley-ish pop tunes, he soon graduated to a more personal, idiosyncratic style. His first major hit, "Space Oddity," set the tone for much of what was to follow, with it's sci-fi theme, avant-pop sound and the evocation of alienation that would be often reprised in Bowie's career. Throughout the '70s, Bowie adopted and discarded personas and musicalstyles at a breakneck pace; from futuristic folk-rocker to androgynous glam-rock god to post-modern soulster and beyond. Along the way, his carefully chosen image and techno-friendly sound influenced everyone from Lou Reed (who Bowie produced) and Roxy Music to Gary Numan and ABC. SKU: 3101434
