London Symphony Orchestra Vol.1 & 2
LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA VOL. 1 & 2 features instrumental pieces arranged by Zappa for an orchestra. Personnel: David Ocker (clarinet); Chad Wackerman (drums); Ed Mann (percussion). The London Symphony Orchestra includes: Kent Nagano (conductor); Ashley Arbuckle (concert master, violin); LennoxMackenzie, Michael Humphrey (violin); Alexander Taylor, Brian Clarke (viola); Douglas Cummings, Rod McGrath (cello); Renata Scheffel-Stein (harp); Paul Davies, Frank Nolan (flute, piccolo); Barry Davis (oboe); Roy Jowitt (clarinet); Robert Bourton (bassoon); James Brown, Terence Johns (horn); Malcolm Smith (trumpet, flugelhorn); Eric Crees, Roger Groves (trombone); Stephen Wick (tuba); Robert Noble (piano, celeste); Bruce Mollison, Paul Marrion (bass); Kurt-Hans Goedicke (timpani); Michael Frye, Ray Northcott (percussion). Recorded on January 12-14, 1983. Originally released as 2 separate LPs. Includes original release liner notes by Frank Zappa. To the uninitiated, Frank Zappa was known primarily as an unpredictable, hard-to-categorize, twisted rock genius. But to his loyal legion of fans worldwide, he is much more. Not many realize that Zappa was a talented composer and arranger of symphonic music as well, as evidenced on such releases as 1979's ORCHESTRAL FAVORITES, and especially LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA VOL. 1 & 2. Conducted by Kent Nagano and recorded in 1983, the album features the world-famous London Symphony Orchestra performing eleven Zappa compositions. Since the music was very technically demanding, Frank had to painstakingly edit the recordings until the performances met his high standards. But listening back to such flawless tracks as "Mo 'N Herb's Vacation" and "Sad Jane" today, all of Zappa's hard work definitely paid off. Also included are a pair of bona-fide Zappa classics--"Envelopes" and "Strictly Genteel," as well as "Pedro's Dowry," "Bogus Pomp," and "Bob In Dacron." LONDON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA VOL. 1 & 2 proves that there was no musical form Frank Zappa could not master. SKU: 1007941

Boys Night Out
Compilation Producers: Frank Collura; Charles Pignone. In the 1960s, for those looking for a different stylistic bent than what the booming rock world offered, the Rat Pack was the ultimate coterie of cool. That august organization's musical ambassadors, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis, Jr., would often turn up at one another's performances to sing and joketogether. While there are extant live recordings of those events, BOYS NIGHT OUT is something different. Despite initial appearances, it's mostly a compilation of studio tracks featuring Sinatra, Davis, and Martin on their own. The feel is uniformly up-tempo and swinging, as the brass brays with abandon and the drums lay down a jazz-inflected beat behind each singer in turn. There are a couple of signature songs (Davis's "Yes I Can" and "The Goin's Great"), but it's mostly more esoteric fare (including, somewhat inexplicably, Sinatra's version of "Ol' MacDonald"). All three vocalists are present on one track, "We Open in Venice," while Martin and Sinatra pair up on both the "Guys and Dolls" theme and its reprise. Throughout the compilation, you can almost hear the dice rolling and the ice cubes clinking in the tumblers. SKU: 6577465

Hard Nose The Highway
Personnel: Van Morrison (vocals, guitar); John Platania (guitar); Nathan Rubin, Zaven Melikian, NancyEllis, Theresa Adams, John Tenny, Michael Gerling (strings); Jack Schroer, Jules Broussard, Joseph Ellis, William Atwood (horns); Gary Mallaber (vibraphone, drums); David Hayes, Marty David (bass); Rick Schlosser (drums); Jackie DeShannon, Oakland Symphony Chamber Chorus (background vocals). Recorded in Caledonia Studio, San Francisco, California. Digitally remastered by Tim Young & Walter Samuel (Metropolis Mastering, London, England). The black sheep of Morrison's '70s albums, HARD NOSE finds the singer indulging in a wide array of eccentricities. This kind of willful experimentation might be a pretentious act for an artist of lesser vision, but Van makes it work. From the social commentary of "Wild Children" to the surprisingly soulful Kermit The Frog cover ("Bein' Green"), Morrison follows his muse wherever it leads him. The result is an album that is less cohesive than most of his others, but just as substantive and intriguing. SKU: 1002076

Man Vs. Machine
Contains a bonus disc of 3 extra tracks. Personnel includes: Xzibit, Eminem, M.O.P., Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Nate Dogg, Anthony Hamilton, Andre "Dre Boogie" Wilson, Eddie Griffin, The Golden State Project. Producers include: J-Beats, Erick Sermon, Rick Rock, Bink!, Jellyroll. As part of the Dr. Dre posse that's been growing in size and stature since the early '90s (see Eminem and Snoop Dogg), Xzibit continues building on the success of 2000's RESTLESS with his 2002 follow-up MAN VS MACHINE. Staying true to his West Coast roots, Xzibit keeps the beats fat and bouncy fora number of like-minded souls including Dre (the hip-hopera "Symphony In X Major"), Nate Dogg (a rubbery "Multiply"), and M.O.P. (a raw and rough "BK To LA"). "Heart Of Man" even manages to work up a good flow based on a sample from Toto's "Africa." Other impressive collaborations find Xzibit throwing down with Eminem and Nate Dogg (an ominous "My Name," the pointed "Losin' Your Mind with Snoop, and "Harder," a team effort with The Golden State Project featuring Ras Kass and Saafir alongside Xzibit. The native Angelino also goes old school on "The Gambler," a slow-rolling joint featuring plenty of sampled soul grooves, a raspy Anthony Hamilton rhyme, and jazzy flute arrangements. With roots deep in the heart of the Left Coast sound, Xzibit is one more piece of the puzzle that ensures Dre and company will be around for the long run. SKU: 1069193

Live
It certainly sounds like the audience is having aspectacular time at this explosive evening. Mixing hits from Michael's OFF THE WALL (which get the biggest screams) with their then-current hits such as "Shake Your Body," "Lovely One," and "Heartbreak Hotel," the Jacksons provide sheer entertainment. An introduction via video clip of the boys' early-'70s performance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" leads to the present day brothers breaking in and faux-begging Michael to perform that material--Michael's protestations that "the stuff is old" only adds to the fever which greets him as he performs "I Want You Back," "ABC," and "The Love You Save." The adult Jacksons here tweak their boyhood material, providing an opportunity to hear the group at its best. SKU: 1017049

On A Day Like Today
Personnel: Bryan Adams (vocals, guitar, bass, Mellotron, Wurlitzer); Melanie C. (vocals); Phil Thornalley (guitar, bass); Keith Scott (guitar, 6-string bass); Vancouver Orchestra (strings); Dave Pickell (piano, Hammond organ); Vince Jones (Hammond organ); Phil Western (keyboards, programming);Robbie Buchanan (keyboards); Dave Taylor (bass); Mickey Curry (drums); Danny Cummings (percussion); Mike Gillies, Olle Romo (programming). Producers: Phil Thornalley, Bryan Adams, Bob Rock, Phil Western. Recorded at the Warehouse Studio, Vancouver, Canada and in Ocho Rios, Jamaica between June & August 1998. Since 1978, Bryan Adams has been churning out solid rock'n'roll overflowing with more hooks than a tacklebox. ON A DAY LIKE TODAY follows the same formula of great songwriting, adding a contemporary edge that's led to this being Adams' most adult-sounding album. Beefing up the guitars and tossing aside some of his more saccharine tendencies allowed Adams to put more of an edge to songs as simplistic as "C'mon C'mon C'mon" and "Cloud Number Nine." Drum-machine-like rhythms gild the abundant hooks of "Getaway" while "If I Had You" gives off an ethereal vibe reminiscent of Chris Isaak sans the Orbisonish croon. Adams tackles adult topics such as the uncertainty of life ("On A Day Like Today"), being the other guy in an affair ("Fearless") as well as playing the deceitful card in a relationship ("I'm A Liar"). Rock and roll still rules the roost in "Before The Night Is Over," but Adams' best moment comes during his duet with Melanie C. on the soulful-as-hell "When You're Gone." This powerful nugget is devoid of any teeny-bopperisms and Mel C. impresses as she sounds more like Joan Osborne and less like Sporty Spice. SKU: 1006183

David Johansen And The Harry Smiths [SACD]
Personnel: David Johansen (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Larry Saltzman (guitar, banjo); Brian Koonin (guitar, mandolin); Kermit Driscoll (didgeridoo, bass); Joey Baron (percussion). Recorded from November 29 to December 2, 1999 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, New York, New York. DAVID JOHANSEN AND THE HARRY SMITHS finds the former New York Dolls singer settling shockingly well into traditional Mississippi-style country blues. Johansen couldn't have made a more unexpected career choice had he suddenly decided to put on a tuxedo, change his name, and start singing pre-rock cabaret songs. Oh, wait... Backed by a talented quartet named after the eccentric artist-historian who compiled THE ANTHOLOGY OFAMERICAN FOLK MUSIC, Johansen delivers traditional ballads like "Delia" and "O Death" alongside blues classics like Muddy Waters' "Little Geneva," Lightnin' Hopkins' "Katie Mae" and Mississippi John Hurt's "Richland Woman." Unlike the tongue-in-cheek Buster Poindexter records, there's no posturing here. Johansen's singing is as forceful and assured as it's ever been; compare his version of Sonny Boy Williamson's "Don't Start Me Talking" to the Dolls' 1974 cover of the same song. You'll see how Johansen has grown as a singer, and the depth of his commitment to this music. SKU: 1070722

Hollywood Town Hall
The Jayhawks: Mark Olson (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica); Gary Louris (vocals, electric guitar); Marc Perlman (bass); Ken Callahan (drums). Additional personnel: Benmont Tench, Nicky Hopkins (keyboards). Engineers include: Brian Jenkins, Brendan O'Brien, Jim Rondinelli. Recorded at Hollywood Sound, Hollywood, California and Pachyderm Studios, CanonFalls, Minnesota. Includes liner notes by Joe Henry. Call it what you will, "Americana," "roots-rock" or "alt-country," in the case of the Jayhawks' major-label debut, it's simply great music. On these 10 tracks, Minnesotan singer/songwriters Gary Louris and Mark Olson mesh elements of rock, folk, and country into songs that sound both traditional and original at once. While their vocal harmonies follow the lineage of the Byrds and the Burrito Brothers, Olson and Louris are yin and yang on guitars, with Olson's steady acoustic strumming anchoring Louris' dynamic, fuzzed-out electric playing. Bassist Marc Perlman and drummer Ken Callahan provide a solid rhythm foundation, with star session players Benmont Tench (Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello) and Nicky Hopkins (the Beatles, the Rolling Stones) lending additional embellishment on piano, organ, and keyboards. "Waiting For the Sun" and "Settled Down Like Rain" are instant classics, songs of ragged beauty that sound familiar after one listen. Others like "Crowded in the Wings" and "Two Angels" (much improved over the BLUE EARTH version) are folky narratives that highlight Louris and Olson's penchant for romantic rural storytelling. With its catchy melodies and rustic charm, HOLLYWOOD TOWN HALL is truly a landmark album in American music. SKU: 1073208

Tales From The Hudson
Personnel: Michael Brecker (tenor saxophone); Joey Calderazzo, McCoy Tyner (piano); Pat Metheny (guitar, synthesizer); Dave Holland (bass); Jack DeJohnette (drums); Don Alias (percussion). Recorded at the Power Station, New York, New York. TALES FROM THE HUDSON won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual Or Group. "Cabin Fever" won the 1997 Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. Though Brecker made his name as a pioneer in jazz-rock fusion, TALES FROM THE HUDSON is a different story altogether. On this one, Brecker brings together some of the finest modern jazz players for a round of bracing, intelligent post-bop compositions, and the results are miles away from you might have expected. Brecker tastefully cedes much of the spotlight to guitarist Pat Metheny, whose warm, fluid solos move gracefully through Brecker's tunes and through Metheny's own "Song For Bilbao," which features McCoy Tyner's piano. Drummer Jack DeJohnette's polyrhythmic undercurrent puts the wind in the band's sails throughout the album, combining with Dave Holland's bass to create a constantly shifting underpinning for Brecker's elegant lines. Often, Brecker's phrasing suggests nothing so much as human laughter, erupting with a natural, buoyant feel. That buoyancy fuels this album and makes it a consistently rewarding work. SKU: 5047696

Skin
Personnel: Melissa Etheridge (vocals, guitar, mandolin, harmonica, keyboards); David Cole (keyboards, programming); Roger Manning Jr. (keyboards); Mark Browne (bass); Kenny Aronoff (drums); Gota Yashiki, Abe Laboriel, Jr. (loops); Laura Dern, Meg Ryan (background vocals). Recorded at The Village Recorder and Capitol Studios, Los Angeles, California. "I Want To Be In Love" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. The inspiration for some of music's greatest moments has been drawn from affairs of the heart. There is arguably no human factor more creatively fertile than the darker side of love. For Melissa Etheridge, tales of heartbreak and passionate anguish were far less apparent on 1999's emotionally subdued BREAKDOWN. Ironically, the breakup of the singer/songwriter's 12-year relationship gives SKIN a creative edge that she's had seemingly tucked away during her short-lived complacency. The tensongs on SKIN are interwoven with a connecting thread of personal strength found in a time of turbulence. Expanding on this theme, Etheridge tackles most of the production duties alone as well as most of the instrumentation, save drums and bass. She incorporates drum loops and programmed percussion on much of SKIN, employing simple yet contemporary arrangements that bring fans full circle to her acoustic guitar-driven roots. "Lover Please" offers bombastic hooks, while "The Prison" nods to Etheridge's confessed influences of Springsteen and Dylan. "Down to One" is the track here that truly exemplifies Etheridge's growth as a writer. Openly wearing her heart on her sleeve throughout SKIN, Etheridge wants nothing more than to love and be loved, the primal need with which her fans make their connection to her music. SKU: 1063607

Met.A.Mor.Phic
Personnel includes: Dalvin DeGrate, Stevie J., DeVante. Producers: Dalvin DeGrate, Stevie J., Tim & Bob, KeVante, Kevin Scott. Engineers include: Tom Russo, Tony Black, Rob Chiarelli. Though he first made a name for himself as "Mr. Dalvin" of R&B supergroup Jodeci, singer/songwriter Dalvin DeGrate now throws his hat into the solo arena with his debut MET.A.MOR.PHIC. The transformation is obvious, as he vocally harnesses maturity, confidence and sex appeal on songs like "Long Day," "Not My Girl," and "She Wanted." Dalvin is joined by producer Stevie J. on "Why Can't We," and "Scandalous," and his brother Devante on "Dangerous." MET.A.MOR.PHICis a solid, complete, contemporary R&B album. Other highlights are "I Got That," an emotional cover of Def Leppard's "Love Bites," and "'Til U Get Enough," which uses a sample from Al Green's "Free at Last." SKU: 1031670

BBC Live In Concert
Personnel includes: Graham Parker (vocals, guitar); Brinsley Schwarz, Carlos Alomar (guitar, background vocals); Martin Belmont (guitar); George Smalls (keyboards); Bob Andrews (keyboards, background vocals); Kevin Jenkins (bass, background vocals); Andrew Bodnar (bass); Steve Goulding, Mike Braun (drums). Recorded live between May 17, 1977 & May 17, 1991. Includes liner notes by Graham Parker. There are other live documents of England's quintessential angry young (at heart) man, but they mostly focus on a specific era of Graham Parker's career. This disc culls live material from a few different sources over thespan of 14 years, providing listeners with a good idea of Parker's artistic trajectory. Both popular and critical opinion hold that Parker's salad days were his late '70s/early '80s outings with the Rumour, so we're fortunate that this period gets the lion's share of attention on BBC LIVE IN CONCERT. Parker's R&B roots are most evident in the earliest cuts, "Hold Back the Night" and "Soul Shoes." The batch of tracks that follow, including material from his masterpiece SHOOTING OUT SPARKS, find his music at its most concentrated and intense. The stinging guitar riffs of Brinsley Schwarz and Martin Belmont, driven by the relentless-but-precise drums of Steve Goulding, power Parker's most visceral, passionate tunes. By the time we get to '90s tracks such as "They Murdered the Clown" and "My Love's Strong," Parker seems to have mellowed slightly, taking on the rock gentleman veneer, but this just serves to put the scope of his career into focus. Behind The Music
The Soundtrack Of Our Lives: Ebbot Lundberg: (vocals, dulcimer, sitar, harmonica); Mattias Barjed (various instruments, guitar, background vocals); Ian Person (guitar, percussion, background vocals); Martin Hederos (piano, organ, mellotron, background vocals); Ake Karl Kalle Gustafsson (double bass, bass, cembalo, background vocals); Fredrik Sandsten (drums, percussion). BEHIND THE MUSIC was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album. Even before the Swedish rock invasion hit the US full-force in 2002, the Soundtrack Of Our Lives was making waves. While the careless are quick to lump them in with their neo-garage countrymen, it's vital to note that SOOL, led by singer-songwriter Ebbot Lundberg, are far beyond that. While they do knock out some zesty, old-school rock guitar riffs, these Swedes bear more noticeable echoes of late-'60sPink Floyd, Who, Stones, and Beatles. In other words, they've managed the previously impossible task of making a new "classic rock" record that somehow sounds completely fresh. Sophisticated production and songwriting are the rule, whether the band is engaging in psychedelic ballads, driving rockers, or Badfinger-like power pop. SKU: 1069661

Pet Sounds (Mono Version)
This was pretty much the only occasion on which Brian Wilson managed to articulate his extraordinary musical vision over the length of an album. As such, Pet Sounds is not merely one of the greatest records ever made, but also one of the towering masterpieces of 20th-century art. Every song here, from the exuberant introduction of "Wouldn't It Be Nice" to the concluding, wistful lament of "Caroline No", is definitive pop music. Wilson's fantastical orchestrations and harmonies supporta collection of lyrics which are childishly innocent almost to the point of appearing sinister--no album has ever started with a less traditionally rock & roll sentiment than "Wouldn't it be nice if we were married?". When delivered in Wilson's anguished whine, the effect is gloriously heartbreaking--as statements of naked vulnerability go, "I Know There's An Answer" and "I Just \ Wasn't Made For These Times" remain difficult to top. Popular legend has it that when the fiercely insecure and competitive Wilson, a year on from Pet Sounds, heard the Beatles' Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, he was devastated. He needn't have worried. Pet Sounds wasn't trumped then, and it won't be anytime in the future. SKU: 1043001

Full Moon
Personnel includes: Brandy, Michael Jackson, LaShawn "Big Shiz" Daniels, Ray J (vocals); Isaac Phillips, Aaron Fishbeind, Blake English (guitar); Kimbo (violin); Larry Gold (cello); Stuart Brawley, Jason Derlatka (piano); Rodney Jerkins (Wurlitzer piano); Gerald Hayward (drums); Teddy Riley (talkbox). Producers include: Rodney Jerkins, Keith Crouch, Kamillion, Brandy, LaShawn "Big Shiz" Daniels. Engineers include: Paul Foley, Fabian Marascuillo, Jim Bottari. FULL MOON was nominated forthe 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary R&B Album. The first couple of years of the 21st century proved to be a crowded field for photogenic young R&B-pop divas (Britney, Christina, Mya, the list goes on...). Many of these occupy a file in some folks' minds that's labeled "one-shot." FULL MOON serves to disprove such notions in the case of the in-it-for-the-long-haul siren Brandy. The album kicks off with a whisper, as the young songstress lets her voice gently caress the lush, balladic tones of the title track. Things kick into gear in short order though (on the very next tune, in fact) with "I Thought," where our girl lets her feelings of romantic disappointment out over a firm, funky backdrop full of heavy bass. By the time we reach the undulating "Can We," street-smart hip-hop influences have crept into the production aesthetic by way of squiggling synths and forceful beats. Throughout FULL MOON, whether she's belting it out or sneaking in the back door, Brandy lets her listeners know she's more than just a flash in the pan. SKU: 1070201

Trouble In Shangri-La
Personnel includes: Stevie Nicks (vocals); Sheryl Crow (vocals, guitar, bass); Macy Gray, Natalie Maines(vocals); Sarah McLachlan (guitar, piano, background vocals); Lindsey Buckingham, Mike Campbell (guitar); Benmont Tench (keyboards); Steve Ferrone (drums). Producers include: Stevie Nicks, Sheryl Crow, Rick Nowels, David Kahne, Pierre Marchand. "Planets Of The Universe" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Free of an addiction to anti-depressants, Stevie Nicks hunkered down with a coterie of friends for her first album since 1994's STREET ANGEL. Sounding revitalized and strong of voice, Nicks changes stylistic gears throughout SHANGRI-LA, going from the driving force of "Fall From Grace" to the exotic, Sting-like worldbeat of "Bombay Sapphire" (featuring guest vocals by Macy Gray). Peppered with sitar-flavored guitar and unobtrusive drum-loops, the chugging self-empowerment anthem "That Made Me Stronger" serves as the core of this creative rebirth. Nicks' strongest studio album since her 1981 debut BELLA DONNA. Sheryl Crow guests on "Candlebright" and "Sorcerer," which date back to the early '70s, and were dug out of Nicks' vault of previously unreleased material. Both fuse Crow's rootsy sound with Nicks' trademark mysticism. Other highlights include Nicks' duet with Dixie Chick Natalie Maines on the twangy "Too Far From Texas," and the delicate "Love Is," an ethereal collaboration with Sarah McLachlan and her band.
