Kemistry
Personnel: Kem (vocals, arranger, keyboards); Quenton Baxter, "Uncle Reggie" McTaw (guitar); David McMurray (tenor saxopphone); Raycee Biggs, Edward Gooch (trumpet); Fred "Rodriguez" Robinson (bass); Andre "Zapp" Driscoll (drums). Recorded at Willray Productions, Masterpiece Sound Studios, Detroit, Michigan. Like a male Sade, or vintage Steely Dan without the irony, smooth R&B vocalist Kem weaves mellow, late-night musical tapestries over '70s-style jazz grooves. In the process, he manages to sound completely contemporary without so much as a single hip-hop beat or squiggly synth line. Kem's voice is an instrument of subtle grace and power, his vocal timbre and clipped phrasing owing an immediately obvious debt to Sam Cooke, but, interestingly, also occasionally recalling Dave Matthews. Best of all, however, is the Motown vocalist's sense of restraint. The maturity of his delivery belies his youth and puts many established vocalists to shame. Combining the best elements of Luther Vandross, Lou Rawls, and Seal,Kem delivers a slab of jazz-inflected rhythm & blues that proves it's still possible to serve up a maximum amount of soul with a minimum of fuss. Vibe (4/03, p.176) - 3.5 discs out of 5 - "...This is old-fashioned midnight-love music. And Lord knows we could all use some..." SKU: 1081701

Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot
Sparklehorse: Mark Linkous (vocals, various instruments). Additional personnel: Bob Rupe (vocals, bass); David Charles (acoustic & electric guitars, keyboards, bass, drums); Mike Lucas (pedal steel guitar); Dennis Herring (vibraphone); Armstead Wellford (bass); Johnny Hott (drums, percussion); David Bush (drums); Paul Watson (effects). Producers: Mark Linkous, David Charles, Dennis Herring. Recorded at Sound Of Music, Richmond, Virginia; Static King, Virginia; Bad Animals, Seattle, Washington. VIVADIXIESUBMARINETRANSMISSIONPLOT is an impressive debut, sprung fully formed from the head of Sparklehorse songwriter Mark Linkous. A melancholy ode to rural America, the album meanders between sparse, whispered lullabies like "Heart of Darkness" and distortion-drenched rockers like "Hammering the Cramps" while remaining oddly cohesive. Opening with the sleepy "Homecoming Queen," Linkous immediately quotes Shakespeare ("A horse, a horse...my kingdom for a horse...") and establishes his seemingly contradictory lush/lo-fi sound. Not content with structured songs alone, he also adds bursts of noise, samples, and tape loops to the mix on tracks like "850 Double Pumper Holley," "Little Bastard Choo Choo" and "Ballad of a Cold Lost Marble." Linkous has obviously done his musical and cinematic homework, revisiting Neil Young's "burned-out basement" (from "After theGold Rush") in "Spirit Ditch," and quoting characters played by Roberto Benigni and Tom Waits from Jim Jarmusch's film DOWN BY LAW in "Sad & Beautiful World." In fact, despite extremely different vocal styles, Waits is frequently cited by Linkous as a major influence, and hints of Waits' oddball aesthetic are present throughout the album. Ultimately, however, it's Linkous' own vision that carries this rustic, ramshackle masterpiece. SKU: 1005040

Bug [ECD] [Remastered]
The enhanced portion of this CD contains videos for "Freak Scene" and "No Bones." This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Dinosaur Jr.: J Mascis, Lou Barlow, Murph. Liner Note Author: Allison Anders. Recording information: 1988. Bug opens with one of alternative rock's stellar moments, the incomparable 'Freak Scene'. Despite a teenage diet of Sham 69 and 999, frontman J. Mascis had nevertheless grown up into one hell of a tunesmith. 'Freak Scene' has it all - a devastating guitar break and simple but touching lyrics. Not only that, but Mascis and co appeared completely lethargic, to the point of indifference, about their role as saviours of the guitar in rock music. Amazing. The rest of Bug isn't half bad either, especially when Mascis drops some of his belligerence - 'Pond Song' is almost folksy at times. If you thoughtthey were going soft, try closing track 'Don't' at top volume and see your speakers melt. SKU: 6588353

Belle Album, The
Personnel: Al Green (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Leon Thomas (clarinet, Fender Rhodes electric piano); Buddy Jarrett (alto saxophone); Ron Echols (tenor & baritone saxophones); Fred Jordan (trumpet, flugelhorn, Fender Rhodes electric piano, synthesizer); Darryl Neely (trumpet, flugelhorn); Johnny Brown (piano, Fender Rhodes electric piano); Reuben Fairfax, Jr. (bass, bell lyne); John Toney (drums, syndrum); Ardis Hardin (drums); Rob Payne (syndrum); Margaret Foxworth, Linda Jones, Harvey Jones (background vocals); James Bass. Recorded at American Music Recording Studios, Memphis, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by Amy Linden. All tracks have been digitally remastered. THE BELLE ALBUM marks a turning point in the life and music of Al Green. By 1976, Green had gone through some major changes in both his personal and artistic life. The classic Willie Mitchell production style that catapulted Green to stardom in the early '70s had begun to grow stale, especially in the wake of drummer Al Jackson's death, and the singer was in danger of getting stuck in a rut. Around the same time, Green's girlfriend attacked him and then committed suicide, a traumatic experience that ended with Green embracing the church and eventually becoming a reverend. On THE BELLE ALBUM, Green wrestles with his spiritual and sensual inspirations. On the title song he observes, "It's you that I want, but it's Him that I need," a concept that presaged his entry into the gospel field. Simultaneously, Green began reinventing his approach to arranging his music. THE BELLE ALBUM was his first self-production, and it stretches beyond the formula of his earlier albums, with many cuts based around Green's acoustic guitar work. Green also experiments with electronic percussion andkeyboards, and even flirts with proto-disco rhythms. SKU: 1026084

Disraeli Gears (Deluxe Edition/Remastered) [Digipak]
Full title: Disraeli Gears: Deluxe Edition. Additional package information: Slipcase. The remastered DISRAELI GEARS is also available in its entirety on the 4 disc set THOSE WERE THE DAYS. Cream: Eric Clapton (guitar, vocals); Jack Bruce (bass, vocals, harmonica); Ginger Baker (drums, vocals). Recorded at Atlantic Studios, New York, New York in May 1967. Cream: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Jack Bruce (vocals, harmonica, piano, bass guitar); Ginger Baker (vocals, drums, percussion). Liner Note Author: Scott Schinder. Recorded in the U.S. in a three-and-a-half day flurry ofinspired activity before the band members' visas expired, DISRAELI GEARS continued to present the legendary, unprecedented rock power-trio acrobatics pioneered by Cream on their debut FRESH CREAM. The acronymic "SWLABR (She Walked Like a Bearded Rainbow)" for instance, featured some of the band's most fiery instrumental interplay. The album, with its eye-catching day-glo cover, was produced by Felix Pappalardi (who went on to co-found the Cream-inspired Mountain) and once again featured collaborations between singer/bassist Jack Bruce and lyric poet Pete Brown. The Top Five hit "Sunshine Of Your Love," however, was written by Brown and Eric Clapton. That iconic riff-rocker, along with the slinky, bluesy "Strange Brew," and the mythographic, wah-wah stomper "Tales of Brave Ulysses" was a staple of rock radio forever after, making DISRAELI GEARS one of the seminal '60s rock albums. Despite the good humor suggested by the jokey a capella reading of "Mother's Lament," however, all was far from peace and love in the Cream camp at the time, as internal and external pressures broke up the band by the end of 1968. Dixie Chicks: Emily Robison (vocals, guitar, papoose guitar, banjo, dobro, accordion); Martie Seidel (vocals, mandolin, fiddle, viola); Natalie Maines (vocals). Additional personnel includes: Emmylou Harris (vocals); Bryan Sutton (guitar); Lloyd Maines (slide guitar); Adam Steffey, Chris Thile (mandolin); Stefanie Astedi, Leigh Mahoney (violin); Lara Hicks (viola); Sara Nelson (cello); Glenn Fukunaga (bass); John Mock, Paul Pearcy (percussion). HOME won the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Country Album and Best Recording Package. "Long Time Gone" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "Lil' Jack Slade" won the 2003 Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance. HOME was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical). "Long Time Gone" was nominated for the2003 Grammy Award for Best Country Song. For their third album HOME, the Dixie Chicks went back to their bluegrass roots in crafting a record fired in the kiln of recent motherhood and a highly publicized legal battle with their label. Recorded under the gentle hand of producer Lloyd Maines (front Chick Natalie's pop), these dozen cuts are devoid of any Nashville gloss and are instead steeped in the organic harmonies and twang of recent releases by Nickel Creek and Dolly Parton. With sisters Marty Maguire and Emily Robison providing instrumental support on fiddle and banjo respectively, the Chicks are equally at home ripping through the runaway breakdown "White Trash Wedding" as they are tapping into heartfelt compositions by Radney Foster ("Godspeed [Sweet Dreams]") and Patty Griffin ("Top Of The World"). With pop sensibilities that are never too far from the surface, it's no surprise that this talented trio would do such a fine job covering Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" and giving it the kind of shimmering treatment sure to put a smile on Stevie Nicks's face. Despite the duress the Dixie Chicks were toiling under, HOME proves that from turmoil comes stellar creative effort. SKU: 1080668

Liberation
Ice Age: Josh Pincus (vocals, keyboards); Jimmy Pappas (guitar); Arron DiCesare (bass); Hal Aponte (drums). Additional personnel: David Z (bass). Recorded at Caves Of Ice, Copiague, New York in 2000. Ice Age's impressive sophomore effort entitled LIBERATION leads off in stunning fashion with "The Lhasa Road (No Surrender)." The song is a powerful cry for justice, telling of the atrocities committed against the people of Tibet. The album features the band's signature combination of dramatic, progressive rock with moments of furious, aggressive guitar riffing. One of theband's most impressive aspects is the complimentary relationship of keyboards and guitar as lead instruments. Josh Pincus' rich, intense vocals sound even more commanding and powerful than on the band's previous THE GREAT DIVIDE, and his keyboard prowess, whether in gentle, moody passages or lightning fast soloing, rivals that of most prog players. "The Blood of Ages" initially sets a mid-tempo pace, but then explodes into metallic, syncopated riffing. Drummer Hal Aponte's playing is comparable to that of Neil Peart, while guitarist Jimmy Pappas's compositional mastery puts him far ahead of his peers. In the tradition of art-rock bands such as Rush, Ice Age offer a continuation of THE GREAT DIVIDE's "To Say Goodbye" with "Still Here," the third part of this suite, which is quite possibly LIBERATION's highpoint. Ice Age are truly on top of their game here, performing with pure musical passion. SKU: 1057817

Music For Airports (Ambient 1) [Digipak]
Full title: Ambient 1: Music For Airports. Personnel: Brian Eno (various instruments); Christa Fast, Christine Gomez, Inge Zeininger (vocals); Robert Wyatt (piano). Engineers: Brian Eno; Conny Plank; Rhett Davies; David Hutchins. Liner Note Author: Brian Eno. Considered by many to be the ultimate ambient album, MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS is so delicate, lovely, and aesthetically moving, that it has been known to give rise to sensations of flying, being enfolded in warm blankets, or watching a vision take place in the heavens. If this sounds like an overstatement, you haven't heard the album. A four part "piece" performed entirely on synthesizer and piano, Eno's composition finds a referent more in abstract painting (one visualizes bold blocks of color in warm hues) than in any musical genre. Resonant synthesizer notes resembling bells or voices are interwoven with bits of melody, overlapping each other, and fading in and out of an architectural silence. Essentially, it's the kind of music one might hear in heaven, and Eno manages to present it without the pretense or cheese that typify most of what later became "new age" music. MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS stands against the prejudices of even the staunchest ambient music critics, partly because Eno did it first, but mostly because this disc is genuine, pure, and achingly beautiful. Best Of The Smiths Vol.2, The
The Smiths: Morrissey (vocals); Johnny Marr (guitar); Andy Rourke (bass); Mike Joyce (drums). Producers: John Porter, The Smiths, Johnny Marr, Morrissey, Stephen Street. Released concurrently with the BEST OF...I, this set contains 14 songs spanningthe career of this influential British band. Beginning with a later single, "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side," the collection see-saws back and forth in non-chronological order. Fortunately the Smiths' songs are strong enough to be able to withstand the proximity of old material to new. Album highlights include the pop gem "Ask," which features Kirsty MacColl, the humorous "Bigmouth Strikes Again," the rollicking "Shakespeare's Sister," and album closer "There's a Light that Never Goes Out." Two of the most perfectly formed and affecting songs the Smiths ever wrote are contained on this disc: the pain-filled, stunned "That Joke isn't Funny Anymore," and one of their first compositions, the intense, beautiful "Reel Around the Fountain." These two tracks alone make this compilation worth the price of admission. SKU: 1012308

Animals
Pink Floyd: David Gilmour (vocals, guitar); Richard Wright (vocals, keyboards); Roger Waters (vocals, bass); Nick Mason (drums). Recorded at Britannia Row Studios, London, England. Digitally remastered by Doug Sax (The Mastering Lab, Los Angeles, California). By 1977 England was in the throes of punk, a musical revolution that held hugely successful "dinosaur" rock groups in contempt. So ANIMALS, the album Pink Floyd released that year, found the band as musically stripped down as they'd ever been. The overabundance of soundscapes, ethereal synths and lush textures of the past gave way to a leaner, more guitar-driven Floyd. Yet thematically, Waters and co. still reached for the sky. Inspired in part by George Orwell's classic novel, "Animal Farm," ANIMALS divides humans into three categories--dogs, pigs and sheep--and features each classification in song. The dogs are merciless opportunists, grasping for success at any price; the pigs are pathetic, self-righteous tyrants; and the sheep are the mindless followers, being used by the dogs and pigs. This anthropomorphizing was Waters' view of the dehumanizing side of capitalism. And befitting such a lofty theme was the length of the album's three main pieces--none shorter than ten minutes. "Dogs" was co-written by David Gilmour, and it features some of his most inspired playing. The greed driving these dogs towards grander heights of materialism eventually leads to a solitary death from cancer, cloaked in an air of self-importance. "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" overflows with biting lyrics that scorn high-minded censors in general, and Mary Whitehouse (a self-appointed guardian of British pop music morality) specifically. The grunting of pigs preceedes Waters' venomous delivery of each word, as Gilmour's scratchy playing and unsettling use of a Vocoder box become effective conduits for the song's malevolence. "Sheep" starts out with the herd docilely grazing, blissfully unaware of the dogs lurking nearby. The sheep are led to the slaughter, before staging a revolt and killing off the dogs. The soundtrack of this defiance opens with Richard Wright's effect-free electric piano leading a galloping rhythm, before Waters' bass eases the group into a momentary lull. The pace picks up again, and Gilmour'sslashing leads drive the song into a rousing climax, fading out with the peaceful sound of chirping birds. SKU: 1006018

Dino (The Essential Dean Martin)
Personnel: Dean Martin (vocals). Producers: Lee Gillette; Voyle Gilmore; Jimmy Bowen Compilation Producer: Frank Collura. Liner NoteAuthors: Deana Martin; Gail Martin Downey; Steven Van Zandt. Recording information: 1949 - 1969. Nearly a decade after Dean Martin's death, the crooner's fans were finally given the definitive Dino collection. While there was already a two-disc summation of Martin's Capitol recordings, as well as several compilations of his Reprise material, the single-disc, 30-track DINO: THE ESSENTIAL DEAN MARTIN contains a generous selection of the best of his work, culling from both labels' vaults. Steubenville, Ohio's favorite son became a singing star in the 1950s, mostly by virtue of his smooth, easy charm, apparent both in his vocal style and his public image. That charm is crystallized here--the South American lilt of "Sway;" the spare, countryish "Memories Are Made of This" (not insignificantly covered later by Johnny Cash); the laissez-faire swing of "Ain't That a Kick in the Head"--it all bespeaks an uncommon coolness that was Martin's to burn. DINO: THE ESSENTIAL DEAN MARTIN catches all of his best-known tunes, from the aforementioned gems to the perennial Reprise-era sing-along "Everybody Loves Somebody," but it fills in the spaces between with lots of equally lovable tracks, or did you think Glen Campbell had the patent on "Gentle on My Mind" SKU: 6572864

Car Wheels On A Gravel Road
Personnel: Lucinda Williams (vocals, acoustic guitar, dobro); Buddy Miller (acoustic & electric guitars, mando guitar, background vocals); Steve Earle (acoustic & resonator guitars, harmonica, background vocals); Gurf Morlix (6 & 12 string electric guitars, electric & acoustic slide guitars, background vocals); Charlie Sexton (electric & slide guitars, dobro); Johnny Lee Schell (electric & slide guitars, dobro); Bo Ramsey (electric & slide guitars); Ray Kennedy, Greg Leisz (12 string electricguitar, mandolin); Richard "Hombre" Price (dobro); Roy Bittan (accordion, Hammond B-3 organ, organ); Michael Smotherman (Hammond B-3 organ); John Ciambotti (acoustic & electric basses); Donald Lindley (drums, percussion); Jim Lauderdale, Emmylou Harris (background vocals). Principally recorded at Room And Board Studio, Nashville, Tennessee. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Can't Let Go" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Williams's fans waited a long six years for this album, as Lucinda went through music business hassles and a revolving door of producers. The reward for their patience is an album full of rootsy, heartfelt observations that alternately rock and mourn. CAR WHEELS is full of songs about loss and longing, like "Metal Firecracker," "Drunken Angel" and "I Lost It," but even when she's bemoaning her own lack of happiness on the bluesy "Joy," she lets loose with so much passion that it seems inevitable she'll find her emotional center again. Produced largely by Steve Earle, CAR WHEELS is immersed in that late-'90s alt-country sound, full of slide guitar, accordion, dobro and other Americana touches. It's a tribute to Williams's unique artistic vision that she distinguishes herself from the No Depression crowd by virtue of her idiosyncratic songwriting. Full of lust, sadness and the occasional glimmer of hope, CAR WHEELS is one small step for Lucinda Williams and one giant leap for those tuned into her wavelength. SKU: 1001652

Floored Genius Vol.2
Full title: Floored Genius 2: The Best Of The BBC Sessions. Personnel includes: Julian Cope (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass); Donald Ross Skinner (guitar, keyboards, bass, drums); Steve Lovell, Brother Johmo, Moon-Eye (guitar); K-R Frost, Joss Cope (keyboards); James Eller, Tim Bran (bass); Rooster Cosby, Chris Whitten, Gary Dwyer, John Dillon (drums). Producers include: Dale Griffin, Mark Radcliffe, John Porter, John Sparrow, Barry Andrews. Engineers include: Ted De Bono, Mike Engles, Martyn Parker. Recorded live at the BBC Broadcasting Center, London, England between February 5, 1983 and June 17, 1989. Includes liner notes by Mike Houghton. FLOORED GENIUS 2, covering sessions recorded for BBC Radio between 1983 and 1989, captures Cope's Syd Barrett-esque whimsy in full flower. These tracks strip the gloss from familiar songs, allowing listeners to hear what Cope must have heard in his head before producers attempted to turnhis offbeat songs into hit singles. FLOORED GENIUS 2's key tracks are the six songs cut between 1983 and 1984. Still reeling from the split of The Teardrop Explodes, Cope recorded totally solo, backing himself with a solitary guitar, Casio keyboard, and a simple drum machine. Such desolate, soul-searching songs as "Head Hung Low" and "Me Singing" evoke Cope's '60s heroes Tim Buckley and Scott Walker. The versions found here easily surpass the more calculated studio recordings of these highly personal songs. Later recordings such as "24a. Velocity Crescent" tend to focus on Cope's disconcerting penchant for stream-of-conscious lyrics and disjointed melodies. The previously unreleased "Christmas Mourning" and a stripped-down version of "Pulsar"-which Cope would later record on his hard rock ST. JULIAN album-illustrate the playful, adventurous style that Cope first explored with the Teardrop Explodes. FLOORED GENIUS 2 is one of the most consistent and enjoyable albums of Cope's career. Stars And Guitars
Personnel includes: Willie Nelson (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar); Dan Dugmore (acoustic & steel guitars); Jody Payne (guitar, background vocals); Bill Evans (saxophone); Bobbie Nelson, (piano); Jim Cox (keyboards); Glenn Worf (bass); Chad Cromwell (drums); Sheryl Crow, Toby Keith, Lee Ann Womack, Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, Ray Price, Hank Williams III, Keith Richards, Norah Jones, Aaron Neville, Brian McNight, Patty Griffin, Matchbox Twenty, Emmylou Harris, Ryan Adams, Family, Vince Gill. Considering STARS & GUITARS's pop idol-heavy list of guests, one might expect the album to be just a live retread of Willie Nelson's 2002 studio effort, THE GREAT DIVIDE. Fortunately, unlike that album, which attempted to fit the artist into the same pop box that helped Carlos Santana out of a career slump, this is ol' Willie's show through and through. As anyone who has seem him live knows, Nelson's onstage personality issuch a powerful force of nature, no one can hope to tame it. STARS AND GUITARS shows, once again, that though Willie Nelson is capable of playing any type of music he chooses, his musical personality is so strong that most guest artists can only hobble along behind him, thanking their lucky stars for the opportunity. Notable exceptions are Willie's contemporaries Ray Price and Aaron Neville, both of whom make the reasons for their legendary status abundantly clear. Overall, the album has the relaxed feel of a jam session (as if Willie could do it any other way). Though it may not be an essential addition to Nelson's catalog, STARS & GUITARS is an interesting curio that shows how different artists deal with the enigma that is Willie Nelson. SKU: 1077387

Get Ready
New Order: Bernard Sumner (vocals, guitar); Peter Hook (vocals, bass); Gillian Gilbert (keyboards, synthesizer); Stephen Morris (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel includes: Billy Corgan, Bobby Gillespie (vocals); Andrew Innis (guitar); Dawn Zee (background vocals); Primal Scream. Producers: Bruno Ellingham, Andrew Robinson. Between 1993 and 2001, despite numerous "new" musical styles, the only things to emerge from the New Order camp were remixes and rumors--of beak-ups, breakdowns, and the like. The arrival of GET READY in 2001, the band's first album of new material since REPUBLIC, shows a band clearly still interested in doing things on its own terms. When Peter Hook's bass kicks in around the two-minute mark of the lead track "Crystal," it is like a dose of pure oxygen--THIS is New Order. The trio of guitar-based rockers, "Primitive Notion," "Slow Jam," and"Rock the Shack," all further the point--these are songs that no other band could have recorded (though the latter does include guest appearances by members of Primal Scream). For fans of the band's LOW-LIFE period, look no further than "Turn My Way" and "Run Wild," both of which take that album's confessional lyrics and gentle musical swagger and update them for the new millennium. Jazz Masters
Personnel includes: Django Reinhardt (guitar); Hubert Rostaing (clarinet); Stephane Grappelli (violin); Maurice Vander, Ivon De Bie (piano); Jack Llewellyn, Alan Hodgkiss, Roger Chaput, Eugene Vees, Pierre "Barot" Ferret, Joseph Reinhardt (guitar); Coleridge Goode, Louis Vola, Emmanuel Soudieux, Ladislas Czanbanyck, Pierre Michelot (bass); Andre Jourdan, Jean-Louis Viale (drums). Principally recorded in London, England and Paris, France between 1938 and 1953. Includes liner notes by Alain Antonietto. Digitally remastered by Didier Marc (Top Master, Paris, France). This is part of Verve's Jazz Master series. This set, selected from representative portions of Reinhardt's impressive catalogue, offers a perfect introduction to the work of this phenomenal musician. JAZZ MASTERS plays like the world's most enjoyable textbook on swing guitar. The cuts here feature the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, solo work, duets, and pairings with the equally virtuosic Stephane Grappelli on violin. The interaction between Grapelli and Reinhardt on such tunes as "Daphne" and "Souvenirs" is a dazzling example of rhythmic fluidity. Standards such as "Sweet Georgia Brown," "Night And Day," and "The Man I Love" alternate with superb Reinhardt originals like "Djangology" and "Swing 48." Reinhardt's music combines a clear, open-ended sounduncommon to early jazz with a powerful rhythmic intensity. His gypsy-flavored swing style-marked by flurried noodling in the high register, soulful stringbends, and looping melodic patterns (and all the more amazing since Reinhardt only had the use of two fingers)-transforms the guitar's fretboard into a field for acrobatics. This Verve collection of classic tracks by the guitar master is an excellent collection for fans and an essential purchase for the uninitiated. SKU: 1005571

Blueprint Vol.1, The
Personnel includes: Jay-Z, Eminem, Q-Tip, Slick Rick, Biz Markie (rap vocals); Josey Scott (vocals); Victor Flowers (organ); Bink (programming). Producers include: Kayne West, Just Blaze,Trackmaster, Timbaland, Bink. THE BLUEPRINT was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. "Song Cry" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Male Rap Solo Performance. It's official. With his fifth album, aptly titled THE BLUEPRINT, Jay-Z has crowned himself the king of rap music. Laying a foundation for other MC's to follow, Jay Hova presents a lyrical masterpiece. And to make matters worse (for the competition, that is), he does so over a selection of the tightest beats (Jus Blaze, Timbaland) to come by hip-hop since fellow Brooklyn-ite Notorious B.I.G. changed the game. Jay-Z sets it off with a clear and concise statement of his purpose, "The Ruler's Back." From then on, each track dares rappers who tried to test his skills to answer back this time. There's also the cleverly worded (sort of a) love song "Girls, Girls, Girls," where Jay calls out every type of woman in the book. He limits the guest appearances to just one when he collaborates with Eminem for "Renegade." As always, classic material proves why Jay-Z retains his iconic status in the hip-hop world. SKU: 1066613

American Beauty
Original score composed by Thomas Newman. AMERICAN BEAUTY was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Soundtrack Album. AMERICAN BEAUTY was nominated for the 1999 Academy Awards For Best Original Score. Widely hailed as the best film of 1999, AMERICAN BEAUTY utilizes the talents of Kevin Spacey and Annette Bening in the service of a deep, penetratingstory about an American family. Much as the emotions portrayed in the film are complex and conflicting, the range of musical styles and moods on the soundtrack is highly eclectic. Pop wizard Elliott Smith turns in a gorgeously spooky cover of the Beatles' "Because." Bill Withers' irresistibly funky, carnal "Use Me" transports the listener back to the '70s. The Who's "The Seeker" provides a dose of full-on guitar rock. For swinging hipsters, there's the loungey tropicalism of Peggy Lee's "Bali Ha'I" and the sultry "Open the Door" by Betty Carter. Instrumental pieces by Thomas Newman do a nice job of bookending this diverse collection. SKU: 1030718
