Never Love You Enough
Personnel includes: Chely Wright (vocals); Bergen White (arranger, conductor); John Jorgenson, Brad Paisley, Steve Gibson (acoustic & electric guitars); Darrell Scott (acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin); John Willis (acoustic guitar); J.T. Corenflos, Pat Buchanan (electric guitar); The Nashville String Machine (strings); Jim Brown (piano, Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards, string synthesizer); John Hobbs (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Steve Nathan (Hammond B-3 organ, keyboards); Matt Rollings (keyboards); Kevin Grantt, Michael Rhodes, Mike Brignardello (bass); Chris McHugh, Paul Leim (drums); David Huff (programming); Trisha Yearwood, Wes Hightower, Troy Johnson, Garnet Imes (background vocals). Producers include: Tony Brown, Buddy Cannon, Dann Huff, Chely Wright, Paul Worley. Engineers include: Justin Niebank, Butch Carr, Jim Cotton. Country siren Chely Wright shares with Shania Twain not only a penchant for navel-baring, but a willingness to mix country elements with big-production pop for maximum mainstream appeal. A good case in point is this album's title tune, whose gargantuan chorus and tremolo guitar wouldn't sound out of place in an Aerosmith power ballad. The banjo and 2/4 gallop of "Jezebel" are decidedly more country-sounding, but Wright is hardly a traditionalist. Historically, atrocious lyrics have never detracted from hook-laden, pure-pop appeal, and the chugging rhythm guitar and sparkling melody of "Wouldn't it be Cool" prove the song to be no exception to that rule. Despite it's up-tempo moments, NEVER LOVE YOU ENOUGH is ruled by ballads that bear a decidedly adult-contemporary slant cannily adorned by appropriately down-home fiddle and steel guitar. This mix of the modern and the traditional is what defines the music of Chely Wright. SKU: 1067162

Greatest Hits
Personnel includes: Whitney Houston, Deborah Cox, Kelly Price, George Michael, Jermaine Jackson, Faith Evans, Enrique Iglesias. Producers include: Raphael Saadiq, Q-Tip, David Foster, Rodney Jerkins, Wyclef Jean. Includes liner notes by Amy Linden. It should come as no surprise that a woman who counts Dionne Warwick as a cousin, Aretha Franklin as a family friend, and whose mother was a legendary session and gospel singer, became a phenomenally successful R&B act. Perhaps more surprising is that it took 17 years after first signing with Arista for Whitney Houston to produce her first greatest hits album. These hits are neatly compartmentalized into a "Cool Down" and a "Throw Down" disc, the former featuring ballads such as "Saving All My Love for You," while the latter showcases remixes of Whitney's uptempo singles such as "How Will I Know." Four new songs, three of which are duets, are also included. At the time of release, her golden voice had led to 16 Number 1 hits (that's two more than Madonna), an Emmy, Grammys and several notable collaborations. A stocking-filler for years to come, we'll wager. SKU: 1068631

Mahogany Soul
Contains the hidden track "Brotha" which occurs between "The Heat" and "Time Of The Month." Personnel includes: Angie Stone (vocals, Fender Rhodes piano, Wurlitzer piano); Calvin, Musiq Soulchild (vocals); Aaron Freedom Lyles (organ); Rodney Davis (keyboards); Chucky T (bass, drums); Jamal Peoples (drums, percussion); Tenita Dreher, Stephanie Bolton (background vocals). Producers include: Angie Stone, Eran Tabib, Raphael Saadiq, Rufus Blaq, Ivan Matias. Engineers include: Tim Donovan, Jon Shriver, Danny Romero. "More Than A Woman" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. Angie Stone's sophomore effort finds this neo-soul queen building on a rep that includes being part of the rap trio Sequence, fronting acid-jazz outfit Vertical Hold, and contributing to D'Angelo's landmark BROWN SUGAR. Using her stellar debut BLACK DIAMOND as a springboard, the South Carolina native uses plenty of grooves, sass, and scads of poetic lyricism to flex her creative muscle overthe course of 17 tracks. Stone is alternately wrapping herself around a sample of the O'Jays "Backstabbers" on the yearning "Wish I Didn't Miss You," and not taking any mess on the assertive "Pissed Off". The nature of relationships is at the core of this outing. Stone's passion allows her to easily switch gears from declaring she'll take homelessness over unrequited love on the gorgeous "Bottles & Cans" to serving up a potent stew of romance with the equally talented Musiq Soulchild on the hypnotic "Ingredients Of Love". Elsewhere, strong black men everywhere get their props over the undulating beat of "Brotha" and neo-soul credentials are reaffirmed by a transcendent cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Makings Of You [Interlude]" dappled with delicate acoustic guitar picking. With The Beatles
The Beatles: John Lennon (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, Hammond organ, tambourine); George Harrison (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Paul McCartney (vocals, piano, electric bass, claves); Ringo Starr (vocals, drums, bongos, maracas). Additional personnel: George Martin (piano). Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, England from July to October 1963. Includes liner notes by Tony Barrow. This is the one that turned the world upside-down. Released as its creators evolved from pop group to phenomenon, WITH THE BEATLES both affirmed promise and proclaimed genius. A slew of memorable Lennon/McCartney compositions embraced pop at its most multi-faceted, robust, melancholic, excited, and wistful. Their grasp of melody and harmony startled, yet forevery unusual chord sequence employed, the Beatles' vigor and sense of purpose remained true. Influences and mentors were acknowledged by a handful of cover versions, but the strength of the album lies in the group's own creations. WITH THE BEATLES freed artists to record their own material, and the course of pop was irrevocably changed. SKU: 1003497

5 By Monk By 5
Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); Charlie Rouse (tenor saxophone); Thad Jones (cornet); Sam Jones (bass); Art Taylor (drums). Recorded at Reeves Sound Studios, New York, New York on June 1 & 2, 1959. Originally released on Riverside (1150). Includes liner notes by Orrin Keepnews. The title of this 1959 album nicely mirrors some of what makes Thelonious Monk so magical. He took common, simple elements and made them resonate with his personality. (Note: the original five pieces have been expanded to seven with the inclusion of two alternate takes.) Monk brought Thad Jones on board foran extra harmonic line in the compositions, as well as his spirited soloing. "Jackie-ing," named for his niece, opens the album like a national anthem being paraded through some country where we all ought to be living at least some of the time. And then 55 minutes later it all wraps up with "Ask Me Now"--surely one of the most beautiful pieces in jazz or any idiom. SKU: 1008454

Design Of A Decade 1986-1996
DESIGN OF A DECADE 1986/1996 is a greatest-hits album with two new tracks: "Runaway" and "Twenty Foreplay." Personnel includes: Janet Jackson (vocals); Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis (various instruments, background vocals); Mike Scott, Nuno Bettencourt (guitar); Caroline Daws, Brenda Mickens, Helen Foli, Dick Massman, Laurie Hippen, Julia Persitz, Andrea Een, Liz Sobieski (violin); Alice Preves, Hasan Sumen (viola); Josh Koestenbaum, Laura Sewell (cello); Ken Holmen (flute); Greg Hippen (bass); Stokley (drums); Fred McFarlane, Alan Friedman (programming); Jerome Benton, Jellybean Johnson (background vocals). Pricipally recorded at Flyte Tyme Studios, Edina, Minnesota. Includes liner notes by David Ritz. Need to replace your worn-out copies of CONTROL and RHYTHM NATION 1814? DESIGN OF A DECADE is the two-for-one answer, whittling those two '80s R&B landmarks down to their thirteen blockbuster hits, adding the 1993 single "That's The Way Love Goes" and two new tracks. It's one beat-crazy disc that will rival Madonna's THE IMMACULATE COLLECTION as the essential document of female pop of the '80s. Janet Jackson's solo career began in 1982, but it didn't really take off until 1986. CONTROL left everything else behind. The title track is a declaration of independence that explicitly dismissedher famous parents and her brief marriage to James DeBarge. In doing so, Jackson launched her music inexorably forward. CONTROL's songs are bottom-heavy, keyboard-controlled blasts of electronic pop that shook off her family's sweet soul in favor of the raw funk feel and steely techno sound of modern clubland. They continued the mid-'80s pop revolution started by brother Michael and Prince, and added an unmistakable feminist stamp. Yet the revolution also allowed such pillowy pop moments as "Let's Wait Awhile," an apparent ode to virginity. RHYTHM NATION--from which seven of this compilation's tracks are drawn--went even further, blowing up the music's funky bottom and adding shots of heavy-metal guitar and heavy-mental social conscience. DESIGN OF A DECADE begins and ends with new recordings. "Twenty Foreplay," a demand for total devotion from her lover, is a ballad on which Jackson sounds eerily like her brother, except in her sexual frankness. "Runaway" is a breezy, xylophone-driven pop tune that may seem like a retreat from her funkiest advances; then again, it may be just one more stretch in Janet Jackson's universal pop ambitions. Car Button Cloth
Lemonheads: Evan Dando (guitar, vocals, percussion, piano, bass, Moog synthesizer, drums); Bill Gibson (bass, guitar, tambourine, background vocals); Patrick Murphy (drums). Additional personnel includes: Bryce Goggin (vocals, moog, organ); Kenny Lyon (guitar, hand claps); Rich Gilbert (pedal steel); Royston Langdon (piano, bass); Dina Waxman (bass). Recorded at Dreamland, Woodstock, New York. CAR BUTTON CLOTH features the same sort of sugary melodies and clever lyricism that made the Lemonheads' 1992 album IT'S A SHAME ABOUT RAY one of the decade's pop classics. But this time, with the aid of Dinosaur Jr. drummer Patrick "Murph" Murphy and producer Bryce Goggin, the Lemonheads have both a harder edge and a looser feel. There's a wider range of styles, too. Evan Dando, the singer/songwriter/heartthrob who is the Lemonheads'only constant member, co-wrote songs for CAR BUTTON CLOTH with Eugene Kelly (Eugenius, the Vaselines) and Epic Soundtracks (Swell Maps). The pop standouts include Dando/Kelly's "If I Could Talk I'd Tell You" (listen for the newspaper-crunching sound), "Break Me" (with its sweet flute-sounding solo) and the all-too-short "Tenderfoot." CAR BUTTON CLOTH also nods in the directions of country (a cover of the Louvin Brothers' "Knoxville Girl"), punk, metal and even jazz. In his warm baritone, Dando sings lines like "Khmer Rouge qua/Your place or Mein Kampf." The album title has its roots in a second-grade homework assignment that called on Dando to drop objects in a bathtub and see what would float or sink. It's a safe bet the quality and eclectic nature of CAR BUTTON CLOTH's songs will assure this record's buoyant rise to the top of the pop bathtub. SKU: 1003515

Personnel includes: Paul Simon (vocals, acoustic & hi string guitars); Ruben Blades, Marc Anthony, Ednita Nazario, Frank Negron, Myrna Gomila, Teana Rodriguez, Sara Ramirez (vocals); Arlen Roth (acoustic & electric guitars); Vincent Nguini, Steve Cropper (guitar); Oriente Lopez (flute, Fender Rhodes piano, organ); David Rodriguez, Ray Vega (trumpet); Oscar Hernadez (piano, celeste, synthesizer, vibraphone, glockenspiel); John Beal (bass); Robby Ameen, Richard Crooks (drums); Milton Cardona (congas, bongos, maracas, clave, guira); Marc Quinones (timbales, congas, cua); Bobby Allende (bongos, cymbal, bell tree); Briz, Myrna Gomila, Karen Gernod, Renee Connell-Adams, DeWayne Snype, Kia Jeffries, Ed Vasquez, Derrick James, Danny Rivera (background vocals). Recorded at The Hit Factory, New York, New York. When Paul Simon released GRACELAND, it seemed likethe apex of an already impressive career. A few years later, he compounded expectations by extending both his reach and his grasp with the Brazilian-tinged RHYTHM OF THE SAINTS. Continuing his tradition of raising the aesthetic bar, Simon explores new vistas yet again with SONGS FROM THE CAPEMAN. The album features his versions of the songs he wrote with poet Derek Walcott for the play THE CAPEMAN. Based on the exploits of a street gang character of the same name, THE CAPEMAN incorporates several different musical styles into a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts (a method to which Simon is no stranger). In the songs that make up the bulk of the storyline, there's street-corner doowop (one of Simon's early loves), Latin music and of course the sophisticated harmonic sensibilities that mark THE CAPEMAN indelibly as a Paul Simon project. You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol.1
Full title: You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore, Vol. 1. Personnel includes: Frank Zappa (vocals, guitar); Mark Volman, Howard Kaylan (vocals); Lowell George, Adrian Belew, Ike Willis, Steve Vai, Warren Cuccurullo (guitar); Ian Underwood (alto saxophone, keyboards); Motorhead Sherwood (baritone saxophone); Bobby Martin (saxophone, keyboards); Napoleon Murphy Brock (saxophone); Bruce Fowler (trombone); Don Preston (keyboards); George Duke (keyboards); Roy Estrada, Jim Pons, Tom Fowler, Scott Thunes (bass); Jimmy Carl Black, Arthur Dyer Trip III, Aynsley Dunbar, Terry Bozzio, Vinnie Colaiuta, Chad Wackerman, Chester Thompson (drums); Ruth Underwood, Ed Mann (percussion). Engineers include: Bob Stone, Frank Zappa, Mark Pinske. Recorded live between 1967 and 1987. YOU CAN'T DO THAT ONSTAGE ANYMORE, VOL. 1 is the first in the series of assorted live recordings spanning Frank Zappa's entire career, from The Mothers of Invention on. Assembled by the man himself, the series was compiled with an eye towards fans already familiar with his body of work. The songs for the most part had original studio versions, and their inclusion was determined by whether or not they shed any new light on a particular composition or lineup of the band. Previously unreleased numbers range from variations on familiar themes ("Babette") ortopical excerpts particular to a certain tour or show ("Diseases Of The Band"), as well as bits of audio verite ("The Florida Airport Tape"). There are a handful of selections from the Mothers in '69, with the bulk of the two-hour set being his '70s and '80s ensembles--in fact a clear but unstated purpose with the series was to show the instrumental prowess of his post-MOI ensembles. G Spot
This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. Personnel includes: Gerald Levert (vocals); Mystikal (rap vocals); Roy Ayers (scat vocals, vibraphone); Randall Bowland (guitar, keyboards, synthesizer, bass); Emma Kummrow, Igor Szwec (violin); Peter Nocella, Alexandra Leem (viola); Jeannie Lorenzo, Mark Ward (cello); Paris Bowens II (Fender Rhodes piano, synthesizer); Niles McKinney (Wurlitzer piano, organ); Derrick Hodge, Douglas Grisby (bass); Pablo Batista(percussion); Edwin Nicholas (programming, sequencing); Flemuel Brown III (programming). With cover art reminiscent of the golden era of the Ohio Players, THE G SPOT displays its seductive intentions from the outset. It doesn't disappoint. Gerald Levert is a past master at constructing the kind of slinky, satin-lined grooves that have launched countless hot, sexy nights. The album's opener, "Too Much Room," with its danceable yet beguiling arrangement is a mere hint of the delights to come. "Since You Ain't Around" is classic R&B and classic Levert, but the album reveals its true intentions with "Funny," a slow, steady, hooky song in the classic slow jam tradition. Levert's vocals, while not exactly in the Barry White mold, are reassuringly sonorous, and when the mood strikes him he can hit the high notes like a latter-day Marvin Gaye. The real high points of THE G SPOT come with "The Top of My Head" and the Roy Ayers-accompanied title track, a pair of mesmerizing, sinuous jams, the latter featuring Levert scat-singing to Ayers' vibes. If you can't score with this album, it won't be Gerald Levert's fault. SKU: 1077652

Spectrum Of Infinite Scale, A
Man Or Astro-Man includes: Tesla Coil (synthesizer, bass, samples, Theremin). Principally recorded at Chase Park Studios, Athens, Georgia. It's hard to imagine that Man Or Astro Man? whose initial press kit consisted of a tale about space aliens touring the country playing Ventures and Link Wray-style guitar rock in order to find the lost parts of their crash-landed spacecraft, could become any more bizarre. However, A SPECTRUM OF INFINITE SCALE finds the band's brand of surf rock becoming more frenetic and experimental, deconstructing itself into a tone wave, then reconstructing itself into a semblance of the band's former incarnation, before finally reverting to white noise. And it works. At the album's beginning, when the collective is playing rockabilly surf music as if an H-bomb were about to hit the recording studio, its music is both engaging and stimulating as the rollicking guitars compete against each other. By the time A SPECTRUM OF INFINITE SCALE has degenerated into sound art, the boys have sucked you into their world. Even if Man Or Astro-Man? aren't from outer space, their music certainly sounds like it's from another planet. SKU: 1043790

Daylight Again
Crosby, Stills & Nash: David Crosby (vocals); Stephen Stills (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Graham Nash (vocals, guitar). Additional personnel: Art Garfunkel (vocals); Dean Parks, Joel Bernstein, Michael Stergis (guitar); Wayne Goodwin (fiddle); Roberleigh Barnhart, Miguel Martinez, Ernie Ehrhardt (cello); Richard T. Bear (piano, synthesizers); Michael Finnigan (organ, vocals); Joe Ferguson (organ); Craig Doerge (keyboards, synthesizer); Leland Sklar, Bob Glaub, George "Chocolate" Perry (bass); Joe Vitale, Russell Kunkel (drums);Joe Lala (percussion); Timothy B. Schmit (background vocals). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Just when the world at large was ready to write off these '60s legends, they turned around and knocked an album full of engaging, even inspiring tunes that brought back fond memories of their glory days. After years of internal strife, drug problems, and other famous rock star pitfalls, the trio had decidedly seen better days, but this was the album that seemed capable of turning it all around for them. Pay particular attention to the transcendent "Wasted on the Way," an unflinching look at the trials of the past brightened by an acceptance and ability to move forward. The sunny folk-pop of this tune and Stills' "Southern Cross," a song about self-realization and renewed inspiration, are the keys to DAYLIGHT AGAIN, which finds our heroes coming up for air after too much time spent in the spiritual shadows. Greatest Hits
Personnel: Paul Simon (vocals, guitar); Art Garfunkel (vocals). Producers: Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, Roy Halee. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were initially inspired by the Everly Brothers and under the name Tom And Jerry enjoyed a hit with 'Hey Schoolgirl'. The duo reunited in 1964 for Wednesday Morning 3AM, which included an acoustic reading of 'The Sound Of Silence'. Producer Tom Wilson made the presumptuous but prescient decision to overdub 'Sound Of Silence' with electric instrumentation and an album titled after the million-selling single was rush-released early in 1966. Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme had a varied mood from the grandly serious 'For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her' to the bouncy '59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)'. The duo contributed Mrs. Robinson to the soundtrack of the 1968 film, The Graduate. That same year saw the release of Bookends, asuperbly-crafted work. In 1969 the duo released the celebrated Bridge Over Troubled Water. One of the best-selling albums of all time, the work's title track became a standard with its lush, orchestral arrangement and contrasting tempo. While at the peak of their commercial success, the duo became irascible and their partnership abruptly ceased. Since then there have been sporadic reunions, most notably The Concert In Central Park. Genius + Love = Yo La Tengo
GENIUS + LOVE = YO LA TENGO is a compilation of YoLa Tengo outtakes and rarities. Yo La Tengo: Georgia Hubley (vocals, guitar, drums); Ira Kaplan (vocals, guitar); Dave Schramm (guitar, organ); Gene Holder (guitar, bass); James McNew (bass). Additional personnel: Tara Key (guitar); Zeena Parkins (harp); Wilbo Wright (acoustic bass); Stephan Wichnewski (bass); Jad Fair. Producers include: Roger Moutenot, Gene Holder, Kramer. Engineers include: Fred Brockman, Adam Lasus, Wharton Tiers. Collections of odds and ends often serve to show just why certain songs didn't make it onto a finished record, but Yo La Tengo's two-CD compilation of B-sides, cover songs, rarities, outtakes, one-offs, and other non-LP material is a surprisingly satisfying set. Divided into vocal and instrumental side, this record gathers 30 tunes mostly from the early '90s. Inspired covers abound: a raucous "Too Late" by seminal Brit post-punks Wire, a plaintive version of John Cale's "Hanky Panky No-How" sung tenderly by Georgia Hubley, and a ragged take on Jackson Browne's "Somebody's Baby," which casts the song in an entirely new light. Elsewhere, "Cast a Shadow" by rock primitives Beat Happening is sheer bubblegum joy, as is the almost absurdly simple "Something to Do," taken from a low-budget film score. "Speeding Motorcycle," with phoned-in vocals by its author, Daniel Johnston, is quite bizarre, and lots of fun. The instrumentals run the gamut: there are alternate takes of Tengo songs, noisy rave-ups (like the 24-minute closer, "Sunsquashed") and sleekly hypnotic songs like "Nutricia." Keeping true to their hybrid sensibility, Yo La Tengo also mix the Ramones' punk anthem "Blitzkrieg Bop," with Ventures-style surf for a version even your grandmother would like. SKU: 1008457
