Country siren Chely Wright shares with Shania Twain not only a penchant for navel-baring, but a willingness to mix country elements with big-production pop for maximum mainstream appeal. A good case in point is this album's title tune, whose gargantuan chorus and tremolo guitar wouldn't sound out of place in an Aerosmith power ballad. The banjo and 2/4 gallop of "Jezebel" are decidedly more country-sounding, but Wright is hardly a traditionalist. Historically,atrocious lyrics have never detracted from hook-laden, pure-pop appeal, and the chugging rhythm guitar and sparkling melody of "Wouldn't it be Cool" prove the song to be no exception to that rule. Despite it's up-tempo moments, NEVER LOVE YOU ENOUGH is ruled by ballads that bear a decidedly adult-contemporary slant cannily adorned by appropriately down-home fiddle and steel guitar. This mix of the modern and the traditional is what defines the music of Chely Wright.

It should come as no surprise that a woman who counts Dionne Warwick as a cousin, Aretha Franklin as a family friend, and whose mother was a legendary session and gospel singer, became a phenomenally successful R&B act. Perhaps more surprising is that it took 17 years after first signing with Arista for Whitney Houston to produce her first greatest hits album.

The nature of relationships is at the core of this outing. Stone's passion allows her to easily switch gears from declaring she'll take homelessness over unrequited love on the gorgeous "Bottles & Cans" to serving up a potent stew of romance with the equally talented Musiq Soulchild on the hypnotic "Ingredients Of Love". The title of this 1959 album nicely mirrors some of what makes Thelonious Monk so magical. He took common, simple elements and made them resonate with his personality. (Note: the original five pieces have been expanded to seven with the inclusion of two alternate takes.) Monk brought Thad Jones on board foran extra harmonic line in the compositions, as well as his spirited soloing. "Jackie-ing," named for his niece, opens the album like a national anthem being paraded through some country where we all ought to be living at least some of the time. And then 55 minutes later it all wraps up with "Ask Me Now"--surely one of the most beautiful pieces in jazz or any idiom.

DESIGN OF A DECADE is the two-for-one answer, whittling those two '80s R&B landmarks down to their thirteen blockbuster hits, adding the 1993 single "That's The Way Love Goes" and two new tracks. It's one beat-crazy disc that will rival Madonna's THE IMMACULATE COLLECTION as the essential document of female pop of the '80s.
Janet Jackson's solo career began in 1982, but it didn't really take off until 1986. CONTROL left everything else behind. The title track is a declaration of independence that explicitly dismissedher famous parents and her brief marriage to James DeBarge. In doing so, Jackson launched her music inexorably forward. CONTROL's songs are bottom-heavy, keyboard-controlled blasts of electronic pop that shook off her family's sweet soul in favor of the raw funk feel and steely techno sound of modern clubland. They continued the mid-'80s pop revolution started by brother Michael and Prince, and added an unmistakable feminist stamp. Yet the revolution also allowed such pillowy pop moments as "Let's Wait Awhile," an apparent ode to virginity. RHYTHM NATION--from which seven of this compilation's tracks are drawn--went even further, blowing up the music's funky bottom and adding shots of heavy-metal guitar and heavy-mental social conscience.
DESIGN OF A DECADE begins and ends with new recordings. "Twenty Foreplay," a demand for total devotion from her lover, is a ballad on which Jackson sounds eerily like her brother, except in her sexual frankness. "Runaway" is a breezy, xylophone-driven pop tune that may seem like a retreat from her funkiest advances; then again, it may be just one more stretch in Janet Jackson's universal pop ambitions.

CAR BUTTON CLOTH features the same sort of sugary melodies and clever lyricism that made the Lemonheads' 1992 album IT'S A SHAME ABOUT RAY one of the decade's pop classics. But this time, with the aid of Dinosaur Jr. drummer Patrick "Murph" Murphy and producer Bryce Goggin, the Lemonheads have both a harder edge and a looser feel. There's a wider range of styles, too. Evan Dando, the singer/songwriter/heartthrob who is the Lemonheads'only constant member, co-wrote songs for CAR BUTTON CLOTH with Eugene Kelly (Eugenius, the Vaselines) and Epic Soundtracks (Swell Maps). The pop standouts include Dando/Kelly's "If I Could Talk I'd Tell You" (listen for the newspaper-crunching sound), "Break Me" (with its sweet flute-sounding solo) and the all-too-short "Tenderfoot."
CAR BUTTON CLOTH also nods in the directions of country (a cover of the Louvin Brothers' "Knoxville Girl"), punk, metal and even jazz. In his warm baritone, Dando sings lines like "Khmer Rouge qua/Your place or Mein Kampf." The album title has its roots in a second-grade homework assignment that called on Dando to drop objects in a bathtub and see what would float or sink. It's a safe bet the quality and eclectic nature of CAR BUTTON CLOTH's songs will assure this record's buoyant rise to the top of the pop bathtub.

YOU CAN'T DO THAT ONSTAGE ANYMORE, VOL. 1 is the first in the series of assorted live recordings spanning Frank Zappa's entire career, from The Mothers of Invention on. Assembled by the man himself, the series was compiled with an eye towards fans already familiar with his body of work. The songs for the most part had original studio versions, and their inclusion was determined by whether or not they shed any new light on a particular composition or lineup of the band. Previously unreleased numbers range from variations on familiar themes ("Babette") ortopical excerpts particular to a certain tour or show ("Diseases Of The Band"), as well as bits of audio verite ("The Florida Airport Tape"). There are a handful of selections from the Mothers in '69, with the bulk of the two-hour set being his '70s and '80s ensembles--in fact a clear but unstated purpose with the series was to show the instrumental prowess of his post-MOI ensembles.

Gerald Levert is a past master at constructing the kind of slinky, satin-lined grooves that have launched countless hot, sexy nights. The album's opener, "Too Much Room," with its danceable yet beguiling arrangement is a mere hint of the delights to come. "Since You Ain't Around" is classic R&B and classic Levert, but the album reveals its true intentions with "Funny," a slow, steady, hooky song in the classic slow jam tradition.
Levert's vocals, while not exactly in the Barry White mold, are reassuringly sonorous, and when the mood strikes him he can hit the high notes like a latter-day Marvin Gaye. The real high points of THE G SPOT come with "The Top of My Head" and the Roy Ayers-accompanied title track, a pair of mesmerizing, sinuous jams, the latter featuring Levert scat-singing to Ayers' vibes. If you can't score with this album, it won't be Gerald Levert's fault.

It's hard to imagine that Man Or Astro Man? whose initial press kit consisted of a tale about space aliens touring the country playing Ventures and Link Wray-style guitar rock in order to find the lost parts of their crash-landed spacecraft, could become any more bizarre. However, A SPECTRUM OF INFINITE SCALE finds the band's brand of surf rock becoming more frenetic and experimental, deconstructing itself into a tone wave, then reconstructing itself into a semblance of the band's former incarnation, before finally reverting to white noise.
And it works. At the album's beginning, when the collective is playing rockabilly surf music as if an H-bomb were about to hit the recording studio, its music is both engaging and stimulating as the rollicking guitars compete against each other. By the time A SPECTRUM OF INFINITE SCALE has degenerated into sound art, the boys have sucked you into their world. Even if Man Or Astro-Man? aren't from outer space, their music certainly sounds like it's from another planet.

Just when the world at large was ready to write off these '60s legends, they turned around and knocked an album full of engaging, even inspiring tunes that brought back fond memories of their glory days. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel were initially inspired by the Everly Brothers and under the name Tom And Jerry enjoyed a hit with 'Hey Schoolgirl'. The duo reunited in 1964 for Wednesday Morning 3AM, which included an acoustic reading of 'The Sound Of Silence'. Producer Tom Wilson made the presumptuous but prescient decision to overdub 'Sound Of Silence' with electric instrumentation and an album titled after the million-selling single was rush-released early in 1966. Parsley, Sage, Rosemary And Thyme had a varied mood from the grandly serious 'For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her' to the bouncy '59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)'. The duo contributed Mrs. Robinson to the soundtrack of the 1968 film, The Graduate. That same year saw the release of Bookends, asuperbly-crafted work. In 1969 the duo released the celebrated Bridge Over Troubled Water. One of the best-selling albums of all time, the work's title track became a standard with its lush, orchestral arrangement and contrasting tempo. While at the peak of their commercial success, the duo became irascible and their partnership abruptly ceased. Since then there have been sporadic reunions, most notably The Concert In Central Park.

Collections of odds and ends often serve to show just why certain songs didn't make it onto a finished record, but Yo La Tengo's two-CD compilation of B-sides, cover songs, rarities, outtakes, one-offs, and other non-LP material is a surprisingly satisfying set. Divided into vocal and instrumental side, this record gathers 30 tunes mostly from the early '90s. Inspired covers abound: a raucous "Too Late" by seminal Brit post-punks Wire, a plaintive version of John Cale's "Hanky Panky No-How" sung tenderly by Georgia Hubley, and a ragged take on Jackson Browne's "Somebody's Baby," which casts the song in an entirely new light.
Elsewhere, "Cast a Shadow" by rock primitives Beat Happening is sheer bubblegum joy, as is the almost absurdly simple "Something to Do," taken from a low-budget film score. "Speeding Motorcycle," with phoned-in vocals by its author, Daniel Johnston, is quite bizarre, and lots of fun. The instrumentals run the gamut: there are alternate takes of Tengo songs, noisy rave-ups (like the 24-minute closer, "Sunsquashed") and sleekly hypnotic songs like "Nutricia." Keeping true to their hybrid sensibility, Yo La Tengo also mix the Ramones' punk anthem "Blitzkrieg Bop," with Ventures-style surf for a version even your grandmother would like.
