Blizzard Of Oz [Remastered]
Available on Mini Disc on Epic (36812). NOTES: Personnel: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Randy Rhoads (guitar); Don Airey (keyboards); Bob Daisley (bass, gong, background vocals); Lee Kerslake (drums, percussion, tubular bells, timpani); Mark Lennon, John Shanks (background vocals). Producers: Ozzy Osbourne, Bob Daisley, Lee Kerslake, Randy Rhoads. Engineers: Max Norman, Thom Panunzio, Herman Villacota. Recorded between March 22 & April 19, 1980. Includes liner notes by Phil Alexander. Digitally remastered by Stephen Marcussen (Marcussen Mastering). After the quiet implosion of Black Sabbath, the wise money was not on former vocalist, Ozzy, being the one to redeem himself musically. However, with shrewd management by his wife and a hotshot Californian in the shape of ex-Quiet Riot guitarist, Randy Rhoads, he reinvented himself and his musical persona, and created a startling debut album. Combining Rhoads' impetuous flurries of heavily stylized guitar, his own series of lyrical caricatures--"Crazy Train" and "Revelation (Mother Earth)"--and a healthy dose of controversy, citing renowned satanist Aleister Crowley as the subject matter for "Mr. Crowley,"he ensured himself acclaim and commerciality in equal measure. Unplugged
Personnel: Tony Bennett, K.D. Lang, Elvis Costello (vocals); Ralph Sharon (piano); Doug Richeson (bass); Clayton Cameron (drums). Engineers: Mitch Maketansky, John Harris. Recorded live at Sony Studios, New York, New York on April 12, 1994. MTV UNPLUGGED won 1995 Grammy Awards for Album Of The Year and Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance. "Moonglow" was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Collaboration. Sometimes, if you live long enough, and remain true to your artistic principles, people catch up with what you're doing. Not that singer Tony Bennett has been withering away in the weeds. When popular song stylists the likes of Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby place you at the top of Olympus, well...you the man. MTV UNPLUGGED reprises the greatest moments in Bennett's concert repertoire, songs he's been refining for 40 years. The only difference is that thanks to enthusiastic fans like Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, a young audience is ready to embrace the classic Tin Pan Alley song forms, and swinging jazz trio approach that has long distinguished Bennett's stylized presentation. Bennett has a dramatic, understated way of personalizing the narrative elements of a song. "Fill my heart with song, let me sing forevermore," he pleads on "Fly Me To The Moon," a tune he's probably done 10,000 times, yet it sounds like he's grasping the meaning for the very first time. The effect is stunning, and even on tunes where his pitch wavers, his way of getting back in tune is just so hip and swinging. On a dreamy "Moonglow" and a coy "They Can't Take That Away From Me" he shares the mic with k.d. lang and Elvis Costello respectively, and the manner in which the old pro's generosity of spirit draws the youngsters into his orbit is indicative of Tony Bennett's enduring grace and charm. Nine Lives [ECD]
NINE LIVES is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as multimedia computer files. Aerosmith: Steven Tyler (vocals, hammered dulcimer, harmonica, piano, hand organ, keyboards, percussion); Brad Whitford (acoustic guitar, guitar); Joe Perry (guitar, slide guitar, dulcimer, background vocals); Tom Hamilton (bass, Chapman stick); Joey Kramer (drums). Additional personnel includes: Ramesh Mishra (sarengi); John Webster (keyboards). Principally recorded at Avatar Studios, New York, New York. NINE LIVES was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "Falling In Love (IsHard On The Knees)" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. "Pink" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal and was nominated for Best Short Form Music Video. NINE LIVES marks Aerosmith's return to Columbia Records, the label for which it had its first round of stardom in the 1970s, and the label with which the band nearly slid off the rock and roll map altogether in the 1980s. Columbia shelled out a lot of money to woo back the now-bigger-than-ever band, and ends up getting exactly the kind of over-the-top pop-rock it was paying for. Working with producer Kevin Shirley (Silverchair, Journey), the seemingly ageless combo from Boston has made another record overflowing with sexual innuendo ("Pink", "Falling In Love [Is Hard On The Knees]"), power ballads ("Fallen Angels," "Hole In My Soul") and hard-hitting riffs ("Nine Lives," "Crash"). Continuing its recent fascination with sounds alien to hard rock (didja notice the Polynesian log drums on 1993's GET A GRIP?), Aerosmith dabbles with Indian culture on NINE LIVES. You can see it in the colorful packaging of the album, and hear it on "Taste Of India," which picks up where Led Zeppelin's classic "Kashmir" left off. The culturally confused epic features qawwali-esque vocalizing (a la Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan), a sarangi (an Indian fiddle) and, of course, some old-fashioned rock and roll. SKU: 4123469

Simple Dreams
Personnel: Linda Ronstadt (vocals, acoustic guitar); Dan Dugmore (acoustic guitar, steel guitar); Waddy Wachtel (acoustic, electric & slide guitars, background vocals); Mike Auldridge (dobro); Charles Veal (violin); David Campbell (viola); Dennis Karmazin (cello); Don Grolnick (organ, Clavinet, electric piano); Steve Forman (marimba); Richard Feves (acoustic bass); Kenny Edwards (bass); Rick Marotta (drums, percussion); Peter Asher (percussion, background vocals); Herb Pederson, Larry Hagler (background vocals). Also available with PRISONER IN DISGUISE on 1 cassette. This was the fourth in a series of hit albums Linda Ronstadt made in the mid-seventies, starting with HEART LIKE A WHEEL. Like its predecessors, SIMPLE DREAMS is a rich collection of pensive folk ballads, pop with country leanings, and good old rock & roll. Her skill in navigating this rootsy terrain is exemplary, taking her from the swagger of her cover of The Rolling Stones' "Tumbling Dice" to the sweet whisperings of the acoustic "Maybe I'm Right." This record also features some of her most enduringly popular hits, such as "Blue Bayou" and "Poor Poor Pitiful Me." The rousing opening track, Buddy Holly's "It's So Easy" featuring her trademark growl, along with "Tumbling Dice" and the playful "Poor Poor Pititul Me," give the record moments of electrifying energy. It's the ballads, however, that comprise the majority of the tunes. Included are two traditional songs, "I Never Will Marry" (featuring Dolly Parton) and "Old Paint," both given simple but lovely arrangements by Ronstadt herself. The melodramatic "Sorrow Lives Here" is almost a hint of what is to come in the formof her collaborations with Nelson Riddle. Her artistry is perhaps best demonstrated in "Blue Bayou;" the shift from the quiet and husky verse to the yearning wail that is the chorus is nothing short of breathtaking. SKU: 5047475

Before And After Science [Digipak] [Remastered]
Personnel: Brian Eno (vocals, guitar, piano, synthesizer, percussion); Kurt Schwitters (vocals); Paul Rudolph (guitar, bass guitar); Phil Manzanera, Robert Fripp, Fred Frith (guitar); Achim Roedelius (piano, electric piano); Mobile Moebius (electric piano); Percy Jones, Brian Turrington, Bill McCormack (bass guitar); Dave Mattacks, Andy Frazer, Phil Collins, Jaki Liebezeit (drums); Rhett Davies, Shirley Caesar Williams (percussion). Engineers: Rhett Davies; Dave Hutchins; Conny Planck. Recording information: Basing Street Studios, London, England; Conny's Studio, Cologne , Germany. Eno's last glam-pop album before devoting himself entirely to ambient experimentation, BEFORE AND AFTER SCIENCE showcases two sides of Eno's musical personality. The first half of the disc is characterized by floppy, pop-tinged romps reminiscent of his earlier albums (and heralding later Eno-piloted projects such as the Talking Heads' SPEAKING IN TONGUES). Tunes like "Backwater" and "King's Lead Hat" (a song whose lyrics are reputedly about the Talking Heads, the title an anagram of the band's name) feature bouncy beats and keyboards, silly, riddle-like lyrics and Eno's Muppet-ish vocals. The second half is considerably more subdued: the tender, airy feeling of tracks like "Julie With" and "Spider and I" indicate Eno's softer, abstract, synthesizer-dominated direction. Taken together, the fine tracks of this disc frame two sides of Eno: the pop songster andthe ambient composer. SKU: 6558421

You've Come A Long Way Baby
YOU'VE COME A LONG WAY, BABY was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. "Praise You" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. Norman Cook, aka Fat Boy Slim, shows off his big beat-dance style once again with the release of YOU'VE COME A LONG WAY BABY. Packed with pure energy, smart breaks and edgy samples, YOU'VE COME A LONG WAY BABY is a strong follow up to 1997's BETTER LIVING THROUGH CHEMISTRY. The first single, "The Rockafeller Skank"cleverly uses a Lord Finesse vocal sample that dominates the massive-sounding track. In addition, the twangy surf guitars provide a texture not often heard in big beat. "Gangster Tripping," the second single, is a funky, mind-bending head-nodder that uses smashing drums, horn shots, reggae breaks and filtering techniques. Other tracks to make you move are "Build it Up," the adrenaline wig-out "Acid 8000" and "Praise You," with its catchy, '70s-like piano hook. The title of this album speaks volumes about the state of Fat Boy Slim's work. Catch up or you'll get stomped by the big beat explosion. SKU: 1006927

Midnite Lover
Personnel: Shaggy, Marsha, Maxi Priest, Ky-Mani Marley (vocals); Brian Gold, Tony Gold, Gordon Dukes, Deborah Cole, Heather, Kim Ratcliff (background vocals); Dennis Halliburton, Robert Livingston, Robert Zapata, Shaun Pizzonia, John Allen, Christopher Birch, Michael Fletcher, Paul Kastick, Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Marty Kersich, Lloyd Willis, Steven Marden, Dave Kelly. Producers include: Robert Livingston, Dave Kelly, Shaun Pizzonia, Collin York, Shaggy. Engineers include: Kevin Thompson, Dennis Halliburton, Hugh Palmer, Al Graham, Martin Lewis. Pricipally recorded at: HC&F Recording Studio, New York, New York; Mixing Lab Recording Studio, Jamaica, Wisconsin. MIDNITE LOVER continues his musical journey with surprising results. This album is a departure from the one-dimensional reggae/rap stylings he's so often associated with. The music here is varied, with more acoustic instruments and varied musical styles. Gospel, country, and soul are all given the Shaggy treatment, to good effect. "My Dream" is a simple, three-chord pop song with country-inflected harmonies on the chorus and a piano beating out some basic chords. But have no fear, Shaggy is still Shaggy, and his vocal trademark is in full effect throughout MIDNITE LOVER. His vocals have always had a unique texture, at once forceful and light-hearted, asheard on "Perfect Song," a high-energy ode to a potential lover which even incorporates a banjo. Fans won't be disappointed, and he may gain some new converts with this adventurous effort. SKU: 1003809

Black Chamber
Tenth album from celebrated London writer, composer and improvisor follows 2000's '37thFloor At Sunset'. Keeping in the ambient vein of that album but with a darker film noir feel, 'Black Chamber' features found sounds, field recordings, dense atmospherics and live playing from the likes of Lol Coxhill, Terry Day and Tom Recchion, and the voice of the late "sound poet" Bob Cobbing. Gold Against The Soul
Manic Street Preachers: James Dean Bradfield (vocals, guitars); Richey James (guitar, background vocals); Nicky Wire (bass, background vocals); Sean Moore (drums, percussion, programming, background vocals). Additional personnel: IanKewley, Dave Eringa (piano, Hammond organ); Shovel (percusion). Recorded between January and March 1993. A band who can be as heavy as Metallica and as poppy as Simple Minds is no mean feat. The Manics fit the bill, with James Bradfield's stretched tonsils never having to resort to a scream to fill in for some words, such as "wooooahhhh" or "yeahhhhhhhh". Bradfield never wastes a second, because he has a lot to say, and that is what makes the Manics a bit different from the pack; their lyrics are bitingly good, even the ones shrouded in mystery; at least they are interesting. Particular attention can be paid to "Life Becomes A Landslide" and the observant title track. SKU: 1029396

Gift, The
As rock musicians from Pete Townshend to Ray Davies could tell you, growing up in public is no piece of crumpet. Especially if the rest of the musicians you work with aren't growing in the same direction. While tension can bring out the best in a band, it also shortens the shelf life of the average rock & roll aggregation considerably. This, alas, was also the case with the Jam. Although the group started out as mod revivalists, leader and primary songwriter Paul Weller soon began to feel constricted by the limitations of the guitar/bass/drums palette and by the reluctance of bassist Bruce Foxton and drummer Richard Buckler to abandon the group's signature sound. By the time of the band's last true album, THE GIFT, therift was evidently irreparable. However, THE GIFT stands on its own not as a chronicle of the Jam's dissolution, but as a hint of the soundscapes Weller would next explore. And with material as good as the title tune, "Coronation", and especially the Motown-flavored "Town Called Malice," who cares if the band didn't get along? SKU: 5072259

Reggae Greats
Includes liner notes by Vivien Goldman. At the height of his popularity, Jacob 'Killer' Miller was one of the few reggae artists to compete with Bob Marley the hearts of the Jamaican people. Along with his backing outfit Inner Circle, Miller was given top billing over the Wailers at the famous 1978 "Peace Concert," not least because of his formidable stage presence, by all accounts a combination of imposing size and energetic performance. However, his breakthrough Jamaican hit "Baby I Love You So" was released internationally as an uncredited b-side to its Augustus Pablo/King Tubby dub version, the now classic "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown," thereby reducing his chances at sharing Marley's place in the international spotlight. In spite of Miller's continued crossover success with Inner Circle, any further chances at stardom were precluded byhis untimely death in a 1980 car crash. Island Records' effort to remedy these earlier injustices, the 1985 REGGAE GREATS (dedicated to Miller), compiles some of his most-loved roots classics, including songs ("Tenement Yard," "Tired Fe Lick Weed in a Bush") that became Inner Circle standards. Totally Lost
Young Fresh Fellows: Chuck Carroll, Scott McCaughey (vocals, guitar); Jim Sangster (vocals, bass); Tad Hutchison (vocals, drums). The Young Fresh Fellows' fourth record is a transitional album. Recorded as founding guitarist Chuck Carroll was being replaced by Kurt Bloch, who also led exceptional bubblegum-punkers The Fastbacks during his tenure as a YoungFresh Fellow. TOTALLY LOST downplays the goofiness of such earlier albums as THE FABULOUS SOUNDS OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST in favor of loud and sloppy but bracingly melodic pop not unlike that of The Smithereens. While TOTALLY LOST does contain a few giggles ("World Tour '88" and the Troggs-like "I'd Say That You Were Upset"), leader Scott McCaughey focuses on the sort of wistful, occasionally melancholy tunes ("No Help At All," "Little Softy") that could have added depth to the Fellows' earlier, lighter moments. With its inverted silly/serious ratio, TOTALLY LOST is an excellent Fellows album for those put off by the band's clownish image. SKU: 1078634

Untune The Sky
The Moles: Glenn Fredericks, Warren Armstrong, Carl Zadiro, Richard Davies. Engineers include: Bones, John Hresc, Adam Chapman. Recorded between 1991 & 1992. Includes liner notes by Richard Davies. Most of Richard Davies' American fans discovered the Australian singer/songwriter through his short-lived collaboration with Eric Matthews in Cardinal, one of the defining voices of the mid-'90s orch-pop trend. UNTUNE THE SKY collects the entire output of the original lineup of his first band the Moles, a 1991 CD and a 1992 double seven-inch. This lineup sounds like a less aggressive Mission of Burma, with hints of Yo La Tengo and early Wire. Davies' lyrics are typically enigmatic, but songs such as the cheerfully anthemic "Bury Me Happy" have an emotional heft sometimes missing from his quirkier later work. The real highlight is "What's the New Mary Jane," a glorious psych-pop gem with droning organ and "Penny Lane"-like trumpet interjections accenting its instantly memorable chorus. UNTUNE THE SKY may be somewhat less innovative than Davies' later work, but it's a fine example of '90s art pop. SKU: 1031300

Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do [Digipak]
Debut major label release by cult Icelandic experimentalists follows 2002's '()' and is a three-track, twenty-minute suite of music written for 'Split Sides', a performance pieceby octogenarian American choreographer Merce Cunningham's dance company at which they performed live with Radiohead. More animated than previous releases, this combines tinkling music boxes and glitchy ambience with ghostly vocals and samples of Cunningham's tap-dancing feet. SKU: 6563046

Treasure [Remastered]
Cocteau Twins: Elizabeth Fraser (vocals); Robin Guthrie (guitar); Simon Raymonde (bass). Recorded at Palladium Studios, Edinburgh, Scotland and Rooster, West London in August and September, 1984. With their third album, TREASURE, the Cocteau Twins settled on what would, from then on, be their primary lineup--vocalist Elizabeth Fraser, guitarist Robin Guthrie, and bassist Simon Raymonde. One of the band's most impressionistic records, it abandons the "phrase" titles of previous records in favor of mythological-sounding one word names, encouraging listeners to make up their own interpretations of the songs. Sound-wise, the band's performance, though not confrontational, is more aggressive, and several tracks, such as "Persephone," find Guthrie experimenting with a harsher guitar sound. Completists should note that some versions of the CD contain all four tracks from the band's1985 EP, AIKEA-GUINEA. Standouts include the two opening tracks, "Ivo" and "Lorelei," both of which sound like very sexy baby food commercials, while the epic "Donimo" opens with choral-style vocals over sustained musical tones augmented by glittering chimes, exploding halfway through with a pounding drumbeat and Guthrie's crystalline, effects-laden guitar. Despite the fact that Guthrie has stated in interviews that he is largely unhappy with the album, it remains a favorite among the band's fans and it is almost certainly their most consistently upbeat record. Quintessence Vol.2
Stan Getz Quartet: Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); JimMcNeely (piano); George Mraz (bass); Victor Lewis (drums). Additional personnel: Chet Baker (vocals, trumpet). Producers: Steve Getz, Johs Berg. Engineers: Morten Hermansen, Dag Kristoffersen. Recorded live at Sandvika Kino, Baerum, Norway on February 19, 1983. Includes liner notes by Steve Getz, Harris Stratyner, Joe Marillo, and Michael McGovern. This disc is the second of two volumes chronicling a concert featuring two jazz icons together: the late tenor saxophonist Stan Getz and the late trumpeter Chet Baker. Both have carved out niches beyond jazz, and both had serious drug problems that the former overcame and the latter struggled with until the end. Getz and Baker symbolized the "cool school" of jazz, a sometime-misnomer, as both could also blow quite hot. This well-recorded set from Norway in 1983 is a vibrant testament to both players. Getz plays with a gentle yet secure confidence throughout, especially on Sonny Rollins' "Airegin" and George Shearing's "Conception." On the latter, the deft interplay between Getz and Baker is a joy to behold. Baker's tone sounds a wee bit frayed here and there, but the essence of his playing is still a wonderful balance of the sedate and the impassioned. The playing of McNeely, Mraz (surely one of the most durable, dependable bassists in jazz), and Lewis--Getz's regular quartet of the time--is spiritedly sensitive and efficient. While not a masterpiece, QUINTESSENCE does all concerned proud. SKU: 1033752
