Jubilation
The core around which this band has always revolved, despite personnel changes, is Sherman Holmes, Wendell Holmes, and Popsy Dixon. Sherman is the balancing element, displaying a scientific virtuosity on the bass and providing the low end in the group's gritty harmonies. Wendell, a sneakily innovative lead guitarist, shares lead vocals with drummer Popsy, providing a furious, driven foil to Dixon's relaxed falsetto croon. On selections such as "Do Lord" and "Jesus Is Alright," the band pumps its way through tightly syncopated arrangements that find the beat chasing the rhythm section's tail. Wendell and steel guitarist Gib Wharton weave a gameof musical tag in and around the vocals. Riding atop the storm, the brothers' harmonies exult in the joy of spiritual commitment that is the raison d'etre for this album of gospel tunes. SKU: 1004535

English Patient, The
Personnel includes: Ronnie Hazelhurst, Harry Rabinowitz (conductor); Marta Sebestyen (vocals); John Constable (piano);Academy Of St. Martin In The Fields. Includes liner notes by Derk Richardson. Recorded at Air Studios and Angel Recording London, England; YAD Music, Paris, France. Original score composed by Gabriel Yared. THE ENGLISH PATIENT won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition Written For A Motion Picture Or For Television. The soundtrack to this 1996 epic film combines Gabriel Yared's stirring orchestral score, performed by the Academy Of St. Martin In The Fields, with swing-era jazz standards like Benny Goodman's "One O'Clock Jump" and Ella Fitzgerald's "Cheek To Cheek." Yared's music complements the broad sweep of the film, utilizing grand, romantic themes with strong, simple melodies evocative of the film's bold images of WWII-era Italy and North Africa. THE ENGLISH PATIENTS's director, Anthony Minghella, is a musician himself, and it shows in the amount of care taken to create just the right aural atmosphere to accompany the film's poignant story of love and faith tested by a war-torn world. David Whitworth, Frank Simms, George Simms (vocals); Danny Kortchmar, Leslie West, Mike Tyler, Tommy Byrnes (guitar); Richie Cannata (tenor saxophone); Arno Hecht (baritone saxophone); Laurence Etkin (trumpet); Osvaldo Melindez (trombone); Jeff Jacobs (synthesizer, programming); T.M. Producers: Dan Kortchmar, Billy Joel, Joe Nicolo. Engineers: Carl Glanville, Joe Nicolo, Phil Nicolo. Recorded at The Boathouse at the Island Boatyard, Shelter Island, New York; Cove City Sound Studios, Glen Cove, New York; The Hit Factory, New York. Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (Sterling Sound, New York, New York). The song "The River Of Dreams" was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Record Of The Year." RIVER OF DREAMS was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Album Of The Year." Billy Joel's performance of "The River Of Dreams" was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male." RIVER OF DREAMS finds Billy Joel once again in the familiar territory that he staked out early on in his long and very successful career: well crafted songs, strong vocals sung with conviction, and thoughtful production, built solidly from the ground up. Joel has always been a stylistic chameleon. He can conjure up '50s doowop or abeautiful Beatlesque melody and then suddenly turn on a dime and come at you with a hard-edged, urgently rocking tale about life, love lost and lessons to be learned. On "River of Dreams" Billy rocks hard, but with a maturity and insight befitting the grey that flecks his beard. Of course just when you think you know where Billy Joel is going he will always surprise you. "Good Night My Angel' is a beautiful lullaby with a strong classical undercurrent that would make Brahms smile. Other key tracks are "All About Soul," the title cut and the reflective ode "2000 Years". SKU: 1005936

Anthems In Eden
After pioneering the fusion of traditional folk song with jazz, blues, and other guitar stylings on her 1964 collaboration with Davy Graham (FOLK ROOTS, NEW ROUTES), Shirley Collins looked to early musical instruments for ANTHEMS IN EDEN. The title suite, or "song-story," was first produced for a half-hour broadcast on BBC Radio 1 in 1968. Musicians on this and the seven other tracks that make up the 1969 album include David Munrow and colleagues from the Early Music Consort onan array of weird and wonderful instruments like the rebec, cornett, sackbut, and crumhorn. Sister Dolly Collins, who was responsible for the instrumental settings, plays portative pipe organ. "Anthems in Eden" combines traditional songs with original compositions to follow the unsteady course of love from the rural idyll of first meeting, through courtship, to loss brought on by the Great War. There is much else to enjoy, from the traditional "Rambleaway" and "Gathering Rushes in the Month of May," to a delightful version of Robin Williamson's "God Dog," plus a rousing finale of "The Gower Wassail." The Harvest CD and BGO reissue include six bonus tracks, which first appeared alongside the "Anthems in Eden" suite on the 1976 Harvest compilation AMARANTH. SKU: 3103349

Worm's Life, A
Crash Test Dummies: Brad Roberts (vocals, guitar); Benjamin Darvill (harmonica, melodica, Theremin); Dan Roberts (bass); Mitch Dorge (drums, percussion, digital stuff); Ellen Reid (background vocals, keyboards). Additional personnel: Murray Pulver (guitar). Producers: Brad Roberts, Mitch Dorge, Dan Roberts. All songs writtenby Brad Roberts. On their third album, Crash Test Dummies explore some familiarly quirky territory. They're led there by singer-songwriter Brad Roberts' strange, childlike perspective and his unmistakable, deep, precisely articulated baritone. Roberts takes his inspiration from the most mundane of objects and situations, including the worm in a tequila bottle ("A Worm's Life"), a loose tooth ("He Liked to Feel It") and, in "There Are Many Dangers," some familiar childhood hazards: "When it's very, very cold out/Do not put your tongue/On cold metal things, for example:/Stop signs!" The combination of a child's-eye view and a sharply intelligent and dry sense of humor works well once again for Crash Test Dummies. A WORM'S LIFE is heavier on the guitars than usual, adding a slightly harder edge to the band's eclectic, alternative folk sound. SKU: 1013862

This Is How We Do It
Personnel: Montell Jordan, Shaunta, Shappell Crawford, Coolio (vocals); Keb Mo, Morris O'Connor, Doc Powell (guitar); Nolan Smith (trumpet); Charles Green (horn); Mark Harris, Stan Sargent, Andrew Gouche, James Manning (bass); Derrick Walker (percussion); Doug Rasheed, Oji Pierce (programming); Jammin' James (scratches); Delois Jordan, Jennifer Jordan, Tracy Jordan, Ricky Harris, Colin England, Wil Wheaton, Da Gents, T.L. Cunningham, Kristin Hudson (background vocals). Producers include: D.J. Enuf, Clizark, Mr. Janky, J.A. Black, L.C.. The single "This Is How We Do It" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. There is a new figure eclipsing the world of R&B, and it isn't just this singer's 6-foot-8-inchframe. Montell Jordan has taken silky smooth, gospel-rooted sounds and flavored them with a street-smart hip-hop edge, creating a swinging R&B album. The title track, his debut single, topped the R&B charts before the album even hit the streets. Joining that upbeat track in offering infectious grooves are the streetwise "Introducing Shaunta," the goodtime pick-up cues of "Somethin' 4 Da Honeyz" and the radio-friendly "Gotta' Get My Roll On." Jordan's roots are obvious. He has heard his share of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Teddy Pendergrass, whose "Close The Door" he covers; but he can also turn from the sensuous crooning and slam harder, emulating new nasty boys like R. Kelly. Two other highlights include the blues-dripping "Comin' Home," a change of pace that samples B.B. King; and "Daddy's Home," a nod to the relationship between fathers and sons, reminding the listener that Jordan's lyrics are deep from the heart. SKU: 1006543

Dead Man Walking
Full title: Music From And Inspired By The Motion Picture Dead Man Walking. MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY THE MOTION PICTURE DEAD MAN WALKING contains 12 songs, all written and recorded exclusively for this album. A portion of the royalties from the sales of this album are being donated to Murder Victims Families For Reconciliation, Inc. and Hope House, Inc. Producers include: Bruce Springsteen, Chuck Plotkin, Ry Cooder, Mitchell Froom, Suzanne Vega. Engineers include: Toby Scott, Allen Sides, Tchad Blake. Includes liner notes by Tim Robbins. Bruce Springsteen's "Dead Man Walkin'" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Not quite a soundtrack, MUSIC FROM AND INSPIRED BY THE MOTION PICTURE DEAD MAN WALKING is the result of director Tim Robbins sending a rough cut of the film to his favorite singer-songwriters and asking them to respond in song. Not all the songs were used in the movie, but on disc they form a separate and equally powerful meditation on the same basic subjects: sin, redemption and the thoughts that run through a man's head as he awaits execution. The performers may be the most awesome group of Dylan disciples ever collected in one place--Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, Patti Smith, Tom Waits and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder (who does two mystical duets with Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan) among them--and the sum is something like Springsteen's NEBRASKA re-seen through a chimera of eyes. The music is nearly as stark, but much more varied--plainspoken folk from Springsteen and Lyle Lovett, defiantly sassy blues from Waits and Michelle Shocked, spiritual, droning tones from Smith, Vedder and Khan. And while hopelessness and resignation flow through all of the songs, there is a gospel undercurrent aswell--a suggestion that while love may not conquer all, it may somehow still survive even after all is conquered. Formaldehyde
Debut release from the Bradford based quartet leading the early 90's post-grunge 'Brit-Rock'revolution. Terrovision took influence from the declining grunge bands such as Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. To this they added a sense of energy and a positive attitude which led to a sound akin to their counterparts Kerbdog and The Wildhearts. The single, 'Jason', displays the underlying darkness to their pop-rock. SKU: 3105134

Celts, The
Personnel includes: Enya (vocals, various instruments); Arty McGlynn (electric guitar); Patrick Halling (violin); Liam O'Flionn (Uillean pipes). Includes liner notes by Roma Ryan. THE CELTS is the 1992 re-release of a 1987 album simply titled ENYA, containing 15 selections originally composed for aBBC series of the same name. Although a number of the tracks sound dated, several others, including "To Go Beyond (II)" are notable for how they locate the origins of the classic Enya sound, far removed from earlier Celtic efforts. A tidy, dreamlike piece, "Epona," is about the Horse Goddess, closely connected to Rhiannon, whose birds are said to awaken the dead. The tale of a rebellious ancient queen who poisoned herself, "Boadicea" finds Enya humming over a dark keyboard refrain. SKU: 1001265

Little Lost Soul
Solo performer: Matt Elliot. Recorded in 1999. Treading far less aggressive and dark ground than YOU GUYS KILL ME, this album is still cut from similarly lo-fi gothic cloth. "What Is It With You" overlaysseveral vocal lines building upon one another until a burst of drum 'n' bass trills brings it to a grinding halt. "Lost" has a lovely repeated guitar passage that's punctuated by soft piano chords and a beautiful female vocal. The largely acoustic arrangement evolves over 11 minutes attaining a wonderful psychedelic haze. The album closes with "Goddamit You've Got To Be Kind," a quiet haunting trip-hop number with an overlying string motif that simply falls into diminuendo as the breath leaves the pipes. It would seem a paradoxical combination, the harshest of rhythmic styles and the most beautiful of melodies, but in its own way, it's very primal. Matt Elliott's collage technique is quite organic, unlike Hal Willner or Moby, whose albums are more episodic. Elliott uses a selective palette of themes and creates the songs seemingly as artists put paint on canvas. The choral samples echo previous work, but here the mood is more soulful, accessible and hypnotic, though not without drama. "I wanted to make a beautiful record," says Elliott, "something to melt hearts." SKU: 1029174

BYO Split Series Vol.3, The
Rancid includes: Lars Frederiksen, Tim Armstrong (vocals, guitar); Matt Freeman (vocals, bass); Brett Reed (drums). Engineers: Dave Carlock, Chris Gresham. Producer: Rancid. NOFX includes: Fat Mike, El Jefe, Smelly, Melvin. Additional personnel includes: Ronnie King (Hammond B-3 organ). Engineers: Ryan Greene, Adam Kramer. Includes liner notes by Fat Mike. This is part of BYO Records "Split" series. For those who think modern punk rock ended the moment Billie Joe from Green Day picked up an acoustic guitar, NOFX and Rancid are here to remind you that the lessons learned in the late-'70s from the likes ofthe Clash and the Sex Pistols are still being put to good use in the US. In the great indie-rock tradition of bands sharing sides of a single, these two clans split a full-length CD down the middle. Their styles complement each other nicely, as the hoarse vocals and melodic bass lines of Rancid rub shoulders with the slightly more streamlined (but equally assertive) sound of NOFX. Both bands have done their time on the punk underground and it shows, both in the irony and drive of such striking punk ravers as "Don't Call Me White" and in the simple joy that can be heard in the efforts of both of these groups joined together in the common cause of furthering a style that can still accurately be called "punk" in the post-everything 21st century. Dirty Work
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals); Keith Richards, Ron Wood (guitar); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel: Bobby Womack, Don Covay, Chuck Leavell, Jimmy Page, Patti Scialfa, Jimmy Cliff, Tom Waits, Kirsty MacColl, Ivan Neville, Anton Fig, Steve Jordan, Charley Drayton, Philippe Saisse, Dan Collette, John Regan, Alan Rogan, Ian Stewart, Janis Pendarvis, Dolette McDonald. Recorded at Pathe Marconi Studios, Paris, France. Originally released on Rolling Stones Records. Digitally remastered by Bob Ludwig (Gateway Mastering Studios). DIRTY WORK includes an unlisted instrumental track. Three years after releasing 1983's UNDERCOVER, the Rolling Stones returned to the studio to record DIRTY WORK. During the band's sabbatical, Mick Jagger had released his solo debut SHE'S THE BOSS, sparking resentment from Keith Richards, who did not approve of Jagger making music outside of the band. A notabledistinction of DIRTY WORK is Ron Wood's collaboration with the Jagger/Richards songwriting axis on four songs, "One Hit (To The Body)", "Fight," "Had It With You" and the title track, which may have been code for the Glimmer Twins' then-strained relationship. Since Stones recording sessions are always special events, a number of famous guests made cameos on this 1986 release. Among them are Stones heroes Bobby Womack and Don Covay, Tom Waits, Jimmy Page and producer Steve Lillywhite's wife Kirsty MacColl. Despite any infighting, the Stones continued their history of interesting cover choices. A minor 1964 hit by Bob and Earl hit the top five for the Stones, while Half Pint's "Too Rude" continued the band's love affair with reggae. SKU: 1004662

Screamadelica
Primal Scream's understanding of rock's varied vistas is encapsulated on this release. At its core are a series of dance-oriented tracks that broach several musical barriers. Samples, tape loops, dub and plangent chords gel togetherover various grooves, at times uplifting, at others ambient. Mixmasters Terry Farley and Andy Weatherall add different perspectives to individual tracks, with gospel choirs, pumping brass and spaceward basslines bubbling around several selections. Former Rolling Stones producer Jimmy Miller generated the spirit of Beggars Banquet for the rousing "Movin' On Up," while elsewhere the group imply acknowledgement to talismen the Beach Boys and Big Star. SCREAMADELICA is the ultimate confluence of rock and rave cultures. SKU: 1005038

From There To Here (The Greatest Hits 1989-2002)
Personnel: Brian McKnight (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards); John Willis, (acoustic guitar); Wah Wah Watson (electric guitar, guitar); Nick Moroch, David T. Walker (guitar); Greg Leisz (pedal steel guitar); Louis Johnson, Will Lee (bass); Prescott Ellison, Steve Ferroni (drums); Carol Steele (percussion); Brandon Browne, Anthony Nance (programming); Vanessa Williams, Kelly Price(background vocals); Mase. Producers: Brian McKnight, Brandon Barnes, Gerry E. Brown, Sean "Puffy" Combs, Mario Winans. Recorded between 1989 & 2002. Includes liner notes by David Nathan. The story of Brian McKnight, as ably represented by this career-spanning collection, is that of an impressively talented R&B singer with not just the style to make an impression, but the staying power to make that impression last. McKnight's unique appeal is exemplified from the get-go, as the opening track "Let Me Love You" finds the singer juxtaposing images of time travel, astrology, and romantic commitment without ever losing track of the all-important groove. His emotive pipes also prove eminently capable of collaboration, be it with pop siren Vanessa Williams (the ultra-romantic "Love Is") or rapper Mase (the infectiously funky ("You Should Be Mine (Don't Waste Your Time)"). Ultimately, FROM THERE TO HERE is the portrait of a man who has managed to build a lasting career in a notoriously fickle realm, and this disc makes it easy to see just how he accomplished that considerable feat. Non Stop Erotic Cabaret [Remastered]
Soft Cell: Marc Almond (vocals); David Ball (various instruments). Additional personnel: David Tofani (saxophone, clarinet); The Vicious Pink Phenomena (background vocals). Producer: Mike Thorne. Reissue producer: Bill Levenson. Recorded at Camden Cell Studios and Advision, London, England. Includes liner notes by Brian Chin. Digitally remastered by Jeff Willens (2001, Universal Mastering East). As with so many groups of their time and place--synthesizer-obsessed England in the early '80s--Soft Cell's first album is also their best. NON-STOP EROTIC CABARET is a self-consciously seedy but nonetheless delightful excursion into knowing decadence. The artifice is plain--Marc Almond's coyly melodramatic vocals and Dave Ball's witty synths suggest that you shouldn't take this album seriously for a moment--but the songs are mostly strong enough to make this a satisfying album. The hyperspeed "Frustration" careens directly to the glorious "Tainted Love," an archetype of '80s pop music unmatched by anything else the duo ever did, though "Bedsitter," "Sex Dwarf" and the blatantly sentimental "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" come close. Zenyatta Mondatta [SACD] [Digipak]
This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players. The Police: Sting (vocals, bass); Andy Summers (guitar); Stewart Copeland (drums). Recorded at Wissellord Studios, Hilversum, Netherlands. For their third album, the Police, now official megastars, began to move away from the new wave-reggae hybrid they introduced on their first two releases. There's a bit more funk in the rhythm section on tunes like "Driven To Tears" (a tune that also represents a heightened socio-political bent in the lyrics). Andy Summers' avant-garde roots are also more apparent here, as on the eastern-flavored"Behind My Camel," and the quirky, abstract tone of "Shadows in the Rain." On the ominous-but-catchy "Don't Stand So Close To Me" Sting plays Cole Porter, rhyming "shake and cough" with "Nabokov." The album is best known for the monster hit "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da," ostensibly a nonsense song, but under the surface the lyrics bear a serious message about global alienation and postmodern disaffection. Group Sex
This is an Enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Circle Jerks: KeithMorris (vocals); Greg Hetson (guitar); Roger Rogerson (bass); Lucky Lehrer (drums). Recorded at Byrdcliffe Studios, Culver City, California. On GROUP SEX, the Circle Jerks' second full-length album, the band makes no great changes in its musical style. On the other hand, there really was no need for revision. Keith Morris (also an early vocalist for Black Flag) and his band mates had pretty much hit the nail on the head the first time out (WILD IN THE STREETS, appended to GROUP on some CD editions). The Jerks play the sort of very fast and very snotty punk rock--complete with thin, weedy vocals--that eventually became all the rage with such chart-topping bands as Green Day, the Offspring, and No Doubt. As their name and the album title would suggest, the Circle Jerks are not a subtle band. "I Just Want Some Skank" and "World Up My Ass" stand as further examples of their in-your-face lewdness. Standout numbers include "Beverly Hills," an extremely pointed attack on the "upper class," and "Paid Vacation," an anti-military song built on Greg Hetson's buzz-saw guitar. In the latter, the introduction and several bridges recall western TV show theme music sped up to 78rpms. SKU: 6451732
