Sound Of The Sitar
Personnel: Ravi Shankar (sitar); Alla Rakha (tabla). Producer: Richard Bock. Reissue producer: Robert LaPorta. Originally released on World Pacific WPS (21434). Includes liner notes by Harihar Rao & Ravi Shankar. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of Angel's Ravi Shankar Collection series. By far the most famous of all sitar players, Ravi Shankar has long been a beacon of light for Indian music worldwide. SOUND OF THE SITAR is made up of four compositions. The first, "Raga Malkauns: Alap" is a slow, reflective piece. According to Shankar, the section of a raga known as the Alap is difficult to play because it is an invocation, a prayer meant to be performed with great humility. The second piece is, "Raga Malkauns: Jor." The Jor section of a raga is based on a rhythmic pulse and does not a have a strict rhythmic time cycle like the Alap. As this piece develops, much like Western music, it becomes more dense and climactic. The third piece, "Tala Sawari" includes a wonderful tabla solo by Alla Rakha. This piece also uses boles, vocal mnemonics that imitate thevarious tones produced on the drums. The final selection, "Pahar Dhun" is a cheerful improvisation based on the folk melodies of India. SOUND OF THE SITAR is one of Ravi Shankar's best early albums. SKU: 1053916

Blue Wild Angel (Live At The Isle Of Wight Festival)
Full title: Blue Wild Angel: Live At The Isle Of Wight. Includes a 24-page color booklet. Personnel: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, electric guitar); Billy Cox (electric bass); Mitch Mitchell (drums). Producers: Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer, John McDermott. Recorded live at The Isle Of Wight, England on August 30, 1970. Includes liner notes by Keith Altham. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Released two weeks before what would have been Jimi Hendrix's 60th birthday, BLUE WILD ANGEL: JIMI HENDRIX LIVE AT THE ISLE OF WIGHT is an 11-track highlight sampler of what ended up being the last concert given by the legendary guitarist. Backed by Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and Band Of Gypsies bassist Billy Cox, Hendrix took the stage on August 30th 1970 at around three in the morning. Despite being less than thrilled with playing at such a late hour, the Seattle native still delivered a dazzling set. Opening with an instrumental version of "God Save The Queen" meant to rouse the crowd, Hendrix put together a set that found him paying homage to the Beatles ("Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band"), Bob Dylan ("All Along The Watchtower"), and his blues roots ("Red House"). Also preserved is much of Hendrix's between-song banter including an anti-war intro to a nearly 20-minute version of "Machine Gun" dedicated to soldiers fighting in Vietnam, which heaves, sighs, and roars through waves of distortion-laced improvisation.Other highlights include killer versions of less-iconic Hendrix gems including "Dolly Dagger" and "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)." Far From Home
Personnel: Steve Winwood (vocals, guitar, keyboards, organ, synthesizer, percussion); Mike Dolan (guitar, programming); Davy Spillane (Uillean pipes); Jim Capaldi (drums, percussion, background vocals). Recorded at Woodstock, Kilcoole, Ireland. The fervent, aching timbre of Steve Winwood's voice is one of the enduring sound signatures in contemporary pop. In reviving his career with such hit albums as ARC OF A DIVER, a new Steve Winwood emerged from the ashes of the old--a smooth R&B crooner and song stylist. And as good as all the subsequent albums have been, something in Winwood yearned for the freedom of his youth. Not as an exercise in nostalgia or as a rejection of his current directions, but to pick up the loose threads of stylistic milestones such as MR. FANTASY, JOHN BARLEYCORN MUST DIE and THE LOW SPARK OF HIGH HEELED BOYS. FAR FROM HOME finds Winwood going back home with longtime collaborator Jim Capaldi, to the countryside of Southern Ireland, to recapture some of the spontaneous, improvisatory spirit of the early Traffic records. With Capaldi providing lyrics plus drums and percussion, Winwood's talents as a vocalist and instrumentalist are center stage. On arrangements such as the title tune and "Nowhere Is There Freedom," Winwood's richly voiced Hammond organ provides a pulsating carpet of sound for his keening voice, and a launching pad for his emotive (and underrated) electric guitar work. Modern sampling technology even allows him to re-capture the breathy elegance of the late Chris Wood's flute counterpoint. The songs benefit from Winwood's renewed enthusiasm for traditional forms, such as gospel and blues, and Afro-Cuban music. "State Of Grace" in particular addresses the demons which afflicted Winwood for many years, recounting his sense of loss while counting the blessings that afforded him asecond chance. "This Train Won't Stop" finds Winwood returning to his youth, as he reflects on the bitter grind of everday life and again calls for the healing of the spirit. Reading almost like a get well letter to himself, FAR FROM HOME reconciles Winwood's deep spiritual yearnings and jazzy instrumentl skills with the feel-good craftmanship of his pop ascendancy. Nocturama
Limited Edition BonusDVD included with first 40,000 copies. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Nick Cave (vocals, piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Mick Harvey (guitar, organ, bass, percussion, background vocals); Blixa Bargeld (guitar, pedal steel guitar, background vocals); Warren Ellis (violin); Martyn P. Casey (bass); Thomas Wydler, Jim Sclavunos (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Chris Bailey (vocals); The Blockheads. Recorded at SingSing, Melbourne, Australia in March 2002. This can be seen as the third installment in the series of Nick Cave albums that started with 1997's THE BOATMAN'S CALL; like it's two predecessors, NOCTURAMA is full of stately piano ballads, and largely absent of the barbed-wire rantings that typified Cave's earlier recordings. While past albums painted Cave as the grisly Edgar Allen Poe of rock, NOCTURAMA and its brethren take a marked turn toward more personal, sometimes even romantic themes. Naturally there's still an underlying darkness and disturbance throughout, but overall Cave seems to have turned himself into something of a Bacharach for the post-Goth set. Colored by the mournful violin of the Dirty Three's Warren Ellis and Cave's own prominent piano and organ, most of the tracks perambulate quietly along, delivering subtly disquieting but masterfully crafted observations on the world. The two exceptions to the quietude are the garagey "Dead Man in My Bed," hailing back to the sound of TENDER PREY's "Deanna," and the unhinged epic closer "Babe, I'm On Fire." The latter is essentially a 15-minute, psychopathic update of Cole Porter's "Let's Do It," with Cave giving full bore to his gloriously twisted imagination in describing the characters from every walk of life who are slaves to passion. The controlled chaos of the Bad Seeds is at its savage best here as they roar and clang away behind him, like the carnivorous Id that he's barely managing to keep under control. It's a powerful, highly original track, and an easy highlight here. SKU: 1079631

Chicken Scratch
Most tracks are rare or unreleased from 1964-66 studio sessions. Personnel: Lee "Scratch" Perry (vocals, harmonica, xylophone, percussion). The Soulettes: Rita Marley, "Dimples" Constantine, "Vision" Walker (vocals). Skatalites Band: Jah Jerry (guitar); Lester Sterling, Deadly Hedley (alto saxophone); Tommy McCook, Ronald Alphonso (tenor saxophone); Johnny "Dizzy" Moore (trumpet); Don Drummond (trombone); Jackie Mitto (piano); LLoyd Brevett (bass); Lloyd Knibbs (drums). Includes liner notes by Chris Wilson. When CHICKEN SCRATCH was released by the archival Afro-Caribbean label Heartbeat Records in 1989, itwas a revelation. These tracks, recorded between 1964 and 1966 at Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's legendary Studio One in Kingston, Jamaica, are among the earliest tracks to feature reggae's mad scientist, Lee Perry. Originally an A&R scout for Coxsone and later a producer and performer in his large stable, Perry proves himself an able ska performer on these 12 brief tracks. "Please Don't Go" makes plain Jamaican music's debt to American soul and R&B, while "Roast Duck" and "Puss In Bag" show the music's hardscrabble roots. And, of course, the title track provided Perry with his most famous nickname. Most of the tracks in this well-annotated collection also feature the Skatalites, Coxsone's house band, and several also feature Rita Marley on backing vocals. The sound quality is surprisingly good. Artifakts (BC)
Plastikman: Richie Hawtin. Anyone who has followed the evolution of techno music to date is doubtless already familiar with Richie Hawtin, the boyish face behind the Plastikman icon. Born in the UK, Hawtin relocated as a pre-teen to Windsor, Ontario and it wasn't long before he began crossing the U.S./Canadian border and immersing himself in the techno sub-culture of nearby Detroit. Often the only white hanger-on in a predominantly black dance scene, Hawtin was later instrumental in ushering in a more multiracial crossover success for techno in the Detroit area with events like his "Hard, Harder, Hardest" series of warehouse parties, forging a missing link of sorts between UK rave culture and classic Detroit techno. His fourth album chronologically, ARTIFAKTS conceptually falls between his second and third albums. Itrepresents the completion of material left unfinished when he was barred from entering the US for performing illegally and subsequently cut off from releasing material through his Detroit-based label Plus 8. The result is similar to CONSUMED in that it transforms the constantly mutating 303 synth lines of Acid house into abstract forms more at home alongside Tangerine Dream than on the platter of a DJ's turntable. Last Waltz, The (Original Soundtrack)
The Band: Robbie Robertson (vocals, guitar, piano); Richard Manuel (vocals, dobro, piano, organ, keyboards, drums); Levon Helm (vocals, mandolin, drums); Rick Danko (vocals, violin, bass); Garth Hudson (accordion, soprano saxophone, horns, piano, pipe organ, organ, keyboards, synthesizer). Additional personnel includes: Neil Young (vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica); Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris (vocals, acoustic guitar); Dr. John (vocals, guitar, piano, conga); Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Roebuck "Pops" Staples, Neil Diamond (vocals, guitar); Paul Butterfield (vocals, harmonica); Ronnie Hawkins, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, Bobby Charles, Mavis Staples (vocals); Ron Wood, Bob Margolin (guitar); Joe "Pine Top" Perkins, John Simon (piano); Ringo Starr, Dennis St. John (drums). Principally recorded live at Winterland Arena, San Francisco, California on November 26, 1976. Originally released on Warner Brothers (3146). Includes liner notes by David Fricke. During the late '60s and most of the '70s, The Band were arguably the premier American rock group, combining a host of influences to create a distinctive full-bodied sound. For a primarily Canadian ensemble, their lyrics were pure Americana. With themes ranging from the Civil War to small town fairs, they were set in heartland cornfields and Southern battlefields, and the Band's repertoire came to personify the American people. Eloquent and lyrical, their songs stood apart from the other popular genres of the time. Musically, they were equally inventive, incoporating accordions, organs, mandolins and fiddles. It was all driven by the group's individualized vocals, with harmonies that purposely didn't blend. THE LAST WALTZ is the recorded document of their 1976 farewell performance. The event was filmed as a documentary by Martin Scorsese, capturing the all-star concert (and Thanksgiving dinner) for posterity. Sort of a rock version of "This Is Your Life," THE LAST WALTZ brought together performers from all phases of the group's career, giving them a chance to pay tribute and join The Band one last time. There'sno doubt that the songs are the centerpiece. All the group's well-worn hits are reprised, but there are some notable standouts. Famed Canadian rocker Ronnie Hawkins, whom the Band backed in their early days as The Hawks, reprises "Who Do You Love." After their tenure with Hawkins, the group went on to accompany Bob Dylan on some of his earliest electric sessions. Dylan returns the favor by performing a strong folk-blues medley beginning and ending with a fiery, rocking version of "Baby Let Me Follow You Down." Muddy Waters gives a lesson in the blues on "Mannish Boy," with the late great Paul Butterfield on harmonica. Eric Clapton offers his own polished version of the blues with a blistering "Further On Up The Road." Emmylou Harris, a highlight in any setting, duets on the gentle waltz "Evangeline." Dr. John's accurate and rousing "Such A Night" brings a bit of Mardi Gras to t SKU: 1000583

Best Of Both Worlds, The (The Best Of Van Halen)
Includes three previously unreleased tracks. Van Halen: David Lee Roth, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony , Sammy Hagar. Producers: Van Halen; Ted Templeman; Andy Johns; Bruce Fairbairn; Glen Ballard Compilation Producer: Van Halen. Liner Note Author: David Wild. Recording information: 1978 - 2004. Bursting forth in the late 1970s, Van Halen made its mark by melding the hammering wallop of hard rock with an iconoclastic approach to the guitar. With striking virtuosity, Eddie Van Halen's guitar playing succeeded in turning the heads and dropping the jaws of a wide range of listeners. Matched with the acrobatic energy of frontman David Lee Roth and the formidable rhythm section of bassist Michael Anthony and drummer Alex Van Halen, these combined elements added up to Van Halen's hugely success musical formula. THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS is a two-disc overview of more than 25 years of Van Halen recordings. The set contains a few of the now-standard new songs included insuch offerings. Placed on the first disc, this trio of tunes finds VH's second singer, Sammy Hagar, back on board (he'd left in '96 when the band planned to record with Roth again). In fact, the compilation's title (taken from the Hagar-era song) is a reference to the band's two major eras, as demarcated by their distinctly different frontmen. The result is a collection that features raucous, hyperactive songs with Roth ("Hot for Teacher," "Jump," "Unchained") and soaring ballads and mid-tempo anthems with Hagar ("Dreams," "Right Now," "Finish What Ya Started"). White Eagle
Despite the pundits who insist that anything post-ZEIT is scarcely worth a listen, Tangerine Dream's later recordings for Virgin still represent the band's watershed years. WHITE EAGLE, recorded in the waning '80s, brings back to life the startling sounds that crept up in such past achievements as PHAEDRA and FORCE MAJEURE. The 18-minute-plus "Mojave Plan"is nothing less than fascinating. Whistles erupt from the void, eventually coalescing around a slowly thumping synthesizer croak, while Christopher Franke fires up the sequencers around Froese and Schmoelling's riveting electronic chirrups, chimes, and cordials. It's a heady stew that brings to mind prairies brimming with non-human life and man-machines gasping for breath in desert oases amidst the disinterested chatter of mutant arachnids. "Convention of the 24" contains one of the Dream's more inebriating sequencer motifs, and the closing title track is a luxurious bath in simmering waters of liquid electronics and slippery beat smears. WHITE EAGLE remains one of TD's late-period triumphs. SKU: 1003532

Principally recorded at Mad Dog Studios, Burbank, California. "Unless you've tasted the bitter, you can't appreciate the sweet," says singer/songwriter Me'Shell Ndegeocello. BITTER, her third release for Maverick Records, finds the multi-talented artist pointing her career in new and bold directions. The new album touches points of faith, love, loyalty, beauty, and grace. Working with noted producer Craig Street, Ndegeocello welcomed a large host of guest musicians to contribute to the album including Wendy & Lisa, Ronnie Drayton, and Abe LaBoriel, Jr. Notable tracks include "Satisfy" (with its sweet-sounding guitars and strings), "Sincerity," and "Beautiful," as well as the album's two instrumental tracks, "Adam" and "Eve." Also included is "May This Be Love," a lesser-known Jimi Hendrix song that Ndegeocello reworks into a charming arrangement, complete with Fender Rhodes piano and a psychedelic string section. Greatest Hits [Digipak] [PA]
Guns N' Roses: W. Axl Rose (vocals, piano, synthesizer, percussion, programming); Slash (acoustic & electric guitars, 6-string bass); Izzy Stradlin (guitar, percussion, background vocals); Dizzy Reed (piano, keyboards, background vocals); Duff McKagan (bass, background vocals); Matt Sorum (drums, background vocals); Steven Adler (drums). Additional personnel includes: Shannon Hoon, Michael Monroe (vocals); Gilby Clarke, Mike Staggs, Paul Huge (guitar); Matthew McKagan, Rachel West, Robert Clark, Jon Trautwein (horns); Stuart Bailey, Reba Shaw, The Waters (background vocals). Hard-rock juggernauts Guns 'N' Roses arrived as rock & roll saviors in a dark time of generic hair metal and bloated pop. With only five studio albums to draw from (one being the all-covers SPAGHETTI INCIDENT), nearly a third of the material on GREATEST HITS is unsurprisingly devoted to other people's songs. Inclusions range from a dramatic version of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heavens Door" and an outsized take on Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die" topunk classic "Ain't It Fun" and doo-wop nugget "Since I Don't Have You." The band's original songs, however, are the heart of G'N'R's appeal. Start with the quintessential heavy-rock anthem "Welcome to the Jungle." Amid the thunderous time-keeping and tasty riffing are slinky grooves, sexy swagger, and quite an aura of danger. The acoustic "Patience" found these tattooed bad boys showing off a softer side, while archetypal power-ballad "Sweet Child O' Mine" is a perfect hybrid of sentiment and soaring guitar solos. Think of GREATEST HITS as a sampler for the sumptuous buffet that is G'N'R's recorded oeuvre. SKU: 6553317

My Favourite Headache
Personnel includes: Geddy Lee (vocals, guitar, piano, bass, percussion, programming); Ben Mink (acoustic & electric guitar, violin, viola, programming); Waylon Wall (steel guitar); John Friesen (cello); Matt Cameron, Jeremy Taggart (drums); Chris Stringer (percussion); Ed Wilson (programming). Producers include: Geddy Lee, Ben Mink, David Leonard. Recorded at The Peasant's Tent and Reaction Studios, Toronto, Ontario, Canada; The Factory Studios and The Peasant's Tent, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; Studio X, Seattle, Washington. Punchy, melodic bass lines and vocals with soaring, harmony-heavy choruses put Geddy Lee in the context of the modern definition of Canadian art rockers Rush. While Lee is the last of his Rush brethren to embark on solo work, it was unarguably worth the wait. Joining Lee are most notably Ben Mink (k.d. lang), Matt Cameron (Soundgarden/Pearl Jam), and Jeremy Taggart (Our Lady Peace). The music has its fair share of Rush-isms (the title track could have easily fit in on TEST FOR ECHO), but there are more than enough departures to sate fans looking for a different side of Lee. Whether it be the dramatic strings of "Working at Perfekt," the slamming, bass-heavy "Home on the Strange," or inspired vocals in "Slipping" (where Lee sings with a graceful delivery Rush-heads have never heard), MY FAVORITE HEADACHE is much more than a hold-over until the next Rush opus. Rated Next
Next: R.L., Tweety, T-Low (vocals). Additional personnel: Coffee Brown (vocals); Duganz Shalont (rap vocals); Mike Campbell, Kevin Pierce (guitar); Lamar Kronick (vocoder); Prof T. (background vocals); Naughty By Nature, Adina Howard. Producers include: KayGee, Darren Lighty, Lance Alexander, Prof T., Eddie Berkley. Engineers include: KayGee, Darren Lighty, Ken Johnston. Next is a suave, sexy R&B vocal trio equally at home on the dance-floor or the bedroom, as borne out by their debut recording RATED NEXT. While there's plenty of seductive crooning going on here, R.L., Tweety and T-Low aren't afraid to mix their smooth R&B sound with a little hip-hop, courtesy of their pals in Naughty By Nature, whomake a guest appearance on the infectious "Penetration." Though they know how to accelerate the BPM and keep the party moving, it's the intimate, under-the-covers tunes that are the group's specialty. Titles like "Tastes So Good" and "Phone Sex" leave little room for confusion as to the main subject on Next's collective mind. SKU: 1017624

Music
Producers: Mirwais Ahmadzai, William Orbit, Guy Sigworth, Mark "Spike" Stent, Talvin Singh. Engineers include: Mark Endert, Sean Spuehler, Barad Munn. Recorded at Sarm East and Sarm West, London, England; Guerilla Beach, Los Angeles, California; The Hit Factory, New York, New York. MUSIC won the 2001 Grammy Award for BestRecording Package. The album was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. "Music" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award in the categories of Record Of The Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. With MUSIC, Madonna expands upon the electronic advances made on her previous album, RAY OF LIGHT. RAY producer William Orbit is back on board, joined by French artiste electronique Mirwais Ahmadzai. Both men aid Madonna in pursuing ever more sophisticated electronic soundscapes. The accent here is squarely on club-oriented dance music, as propulsive electronic beats and percolating synthesizers power such pure-pop confections as the title tune and "Runaway Lover." Even Madonna's voice undergoes a fair amount of electronic modification, as on the moody "Nobody's Perfect" which bears a hook that hinges on the same vocoder effect that endeared millions to Cher's "Believe." There's another side to MUSIC, though. While Orbit and Ahmadzai maintain the sonic thread of loops and samples throughout the album, several songs leave the party atmosphere behind in favor of a more melancholy, balladic approach. "I Deserve It," "Gone," and "Don't Tell Me" are pushed along by drum loops, but are based around acoustic guitar, and it's easy to imagine them being performed effectively with nothing more than guitar and voice. While MUSIC pushes Madonna into the future, it allows her to arrive in her new surroundings with the full emotional range of her vision intact. SKU: 1041491

No Prayer For The Dying [ECD] [Remastered]
This is an Enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. The Enhanced portion includes music videos for "Holy Smoke" and "Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter." Iron Maiden: Bruce Dickinson (vocals); Dave Murray, Janick Gers (guitar); Steve Harris (bass); Nicko McBrain (drums). Following its greatest success yet with the concept album SEVENTH SON OF A SEVENTH SON, Iron Maiden changed out Adrian Smith for ex-Ian Gillan guitarist Janick Gers on NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING. Rumors swirled that the band was breaking up, especially when Bruce Dickinson issued a solo album, but the band re-congregated for 1990's NO PRAYER FOR THE DYING. The album marked a musical move back to the basics, as Maiden dropped the synth shadings of its previous two albums in exchange for a more guitar-driven sound. Standouts include "Holy Smoke" and "Bring Your Daughter...To the Slaughter," as well as the album-opening"Tailgunner." SKU: 1006573

Interpretations (A 25th Anniversary Celebration)
INTERPRETATIONS: A 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION contains three previously unreleased tracks. The Carpenters: Karen Carpenter (vocals, drums); Richard Carpenter (keyboards, background vocals). Additional personnel: Tony Peluso, Tim May, Dennis Budimir, Fred Tackett (guitar); Jay Dee Maness (pedal steel guitar); Bob Messenger (flute); Earl Dumler (oboe); Tom Morgan (harmonica); Chuck Findley (trumpet); Pete Jolly (keyboards); Joe Osborn (bass); Hal Blaine, Jim Gordon, Cubby O'Brien, Larrie Londin (drums) Producers: Richard Carpenter, Jack Daugherty, Karen Carpenter. Engineers include: Ray Gerhardt, Roger Young, Dave Iveland. Includes liner notes by Paul Grein & Richard Carpenter. Digitally remastered by Arnie Acosta. Although the Carpenters were hardly considered fashionable during their '70s commercial heyday (rock critics particularly detested them), by the time this greatest-hits album (fleshed out with a few previously unreleased tracks) was released, the critical consensus was swinging in their favor.Maybe it was a '90s irony thing (lounge revival, anyone?); more likely it was just that with the passage of time, people could finally hear the melancholy that lurked under the surface-happy face of the Carpenters' lush production style. In any case, this is a terrific best-of, with all the hits plus their all-time weirdest cover, Klaatu's "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft." You make the call: Karen and Richard Carpenter--secret space cadets? SKU: 3100198

Music For The Masses
Depeche Mode: David Gahan(vocals); Martin Gore (vocals, guitar, keyboards, synthesizer); Alan Wilder (keyboards, synthesizer, programming); Andrew Fletcher (keyboards, synthesizer). Recorded at Studio Guilliame Tell, Paris, France and Konk, London, England. One of the bands that not only dominated the charts for most of the 80s, but they also typified the type of music that will be looked back on as 'the sound of the 80s'. Their sometimes Germanic electronic pop became softer on this album. They were becoming more of a band, and they were 'rockin', just a little. Keyboards still dominated but the melody seemed less regimented. Vocalist Dave Gahan excelled, as his voice grew in power. In a year or two they would become stadium rock stars, and change forever. The reissued CD had a number of excellent bonus tracks including some interesting remixed material. SKU: 1005806
