Man On The Moon
Original score composed by R.E.M. "The Great Beyond" was nominated for the 2001 GrammyAward for Best Song Written for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media. As 1999 closed out, the genius of anarchist comedian Andy Kaufman came to light in a Milos Forman film named for an early '90s R.E.M. SONG that was a tribute to the late entertainer. Fittingly, the Athens, GA group was brought in to compose the score. Like the quirky comic, the soundtrack to his life story is an unconventional collection of songs. Aural landmarks include the previously released title track, the Sandpipers' "Mighty Mouse Theme (Here I Come to Save the Day)" (which Kaufman used as a lip-synch prop during his now infamous debut on Saturday Night Live), Bob James' "Angela (Theme From Taxi)," and chunks of film dialogue. Much like his heralded performance in the film, Jim Carrey reprises both Kaufman and his obnoxious alter ego Tony Clifton on the soundtrack. Although a boorish take on "I Will Survive" by Clifton is best skipped over, more appealing is Kaufman/Carrey and R.E.M. teaming up on the catchy sweetness of "This Friendly World," which is minimally affected by the arrival of Clifton/Carrey mid-song. The only new R.E.M. song, "The Great Beyond," is a sublimely moody piece overflowing with odd instrumentation and pathos. SKU: 1028563

If I Should Fall From Grace With God
The Pogues: Shane MacGowan (vocals, guitar); Philip Chevron (guitar, mandolin, background vocals); Jem Finer (banjo, mandola, saxophone); Terry Woods (guitar, mandola, tenor banjo, dulcimer, cittern, concertina); Spider Stacy (tin whistle, background vocals); James Fearnley (piano, accordion, mandola, dulcimer, percussion, cello); Darryl Hunt (bass, percussion, background vocals); Andrew Ranken (drums, percussion, harmonica, background vocals). Additional personnel: Kirsty MacColl (vocals); Ron Kavana (mandolin, tenor banjo, spoons, background vocals); Siobhan Sheahan (harp); Brian Clarke (alto saxophone); Joe Cashman (tenor saxophone); Eli Thompson, Chris Lee (trumpet); Paul Taylor (trombone); Fran Byrne (bodhran); Brian Sheridan, John Lawler, Joe Cashman, Paul Verner, Steve Lillywhite, Frank Murray, Paul Scully (background vocals). Engineers: Chris Dickie, Roy Spong, Nick Lacey. IF I SHOULD FALL FROM GRACE WITH GOD marked an apex for the Pogues--with producer Steve Lillywhite at the helm, their neo-traditional Irish songcraft was given a particularly timeless touch without compromising any of the band's trademark intensity. Adding yet another wrinkle of the Irish experience to his profound, intense lyrical oeuvre, Shane MacGowan touches on the Irish in New York, occasionally conjuring up reminders of George M. Cohan (who even gets name-checked here, on "Thousands Are Sailing"). "Metropolis" is a jazzy,brass-fueled instrumental, while the over-the-top sentimentality and swirling strings of "Fairy Tale of New York" made it an instant Christmas classic. From the irreverent bravado of the opening title track straight through to the jokey, fatalistic closer, "Worms," IF I SHOULD FALL is a rollicking, sometimes brutally honest document, driven hard by the band's inspiringly tight, masterful playing and propelled by the raspy vocal and compelling lyrical attack of MacGowan. "Bottle Of Smoke" is a breakneck thrill ride about a celebratory victory at the horse races, while "Streets Of Sorrow/Birmingham Six" finds Shane in a rare moment of political rant. SKU: 4122520

Blind Faith (Deluxe Edition)
Blind Faith: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Steve Winwood (vocals, piano, bass); Rick Grech (bass); Ginger Baker (drums). BLIND FAITH was cursed at its very inception bybeing billed as a supergroup. This was truly a pity, because for all the classic beauty of their only recording, Blind Faith was a band that never had a legitimate opportunity to come together as a performing ensemble. Hyped to the hilt and rushed into a massive, chaotic tour, the band fell apart after its final American concerts when Eric Clapton packed it in to join Delaney & Bonnie's band. BLIND FAITH scored a big hit with their evocative acoustic ballad "Can't Find My Way Home," featuring Winwood's raspy falsetto, Clapton's poignant acoustic guitar, and Baker's pulsing brush work. But then, every song on BLIND FAITH has become an FM radio staple, "Presence of the Lord" with Winwood's fervent vocals to "Had to Cry Today," featuring Clapton's dense, multi-tracked blues leads, and the jacked-up rockabilly of Buddy Holly's "Well Alright." But the band never had much of a life outside the studio and after Blind Faith folded, Winwood and Grech joined Baker's Air Force before re-forming Traffic. Clapton began moving away from extended improvisations into more tightly structured song forms on his first solo album ERIC CLAPTON, and then with Derek & The Dominos. SKU: 1053110

Freak Of Nature
Personnel includes: Anastacia, Faith Evans (vocals); Miklos Malek (various instruments); Eric Kupper (acoustic& electric guitars, keyboards, bass, drums); Chieli Minucci (acoustic & electric guitars); Chris Camozzi (guitar); Joel Derouin, Becky Bunnell (violin); Roland Kata, Denyse Buffum (viola); Larry Corbett (cello); Sharon Bryant, Audrey Wheeler, Nicole Renee (background vocals). Producers: Richie Jones, Ric Wake, Sam Watters, Louie Biancaniello. Sporting the cleavage-and-bare-midriff look that's requisite early-21st century pop femme-wear, the Berlin-transplanted, Brazilian-born blonde bombshell drops her sophomore album with all the subtlety of a Pamela Anderson video. While her vocals lack the is-she-or-isn't-she breathlessness of a Britney Spears or Mandy Moore (it's pretty obvious Anastacia isn't, and hasn't been for a while), she does project an unmistakable earthiness and raw sexuality, notably in the album's title track and "Why'd You Lie to Me?" both of which find her in a feisty mood. Pity the fool who'd even think about getting on her bad side. Anastacia channels Chaka Khan in the Brazilian-inflected rhythms of "Don't Cha Wanna" and shows her quieter, if no less uncompromising side, in "Overdue Goodbye" ("this is a message--pay attention...") which features perhaps the weirdest yet recorded pronunciation of "goodbye," but is nevertheless a charming excursion into Anastacia's gentler mode. With a couple of Celine-style ballads ("Hold On," "I Dreamed You") that also lighten the mood, FREAK OF NATURE is a well-rounded effort. SKU: 1077572

Nonsuch [Remastered]
XTC: Andy Partridge (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, synthesizer, percussion); Colin Moulding (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, bass); Dave Gregory (acoustic & electric guitars, piano, Hammond organ, synthesizer, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: Stuart Gordon, Gina Griffin (violin); Florence Lovegrove (viola); Rose Hall (cello); Guy Barker (trumpet, flugelhorn); Dave Mattacks (drums, percussion, samples); Gus Dudgeon (percussion, background vocals); Neville Farmer (background vocals). Recorded at Chipping Norton Studios, Oxfordshire, England from July to October 1991. All songs written by Andy Partridge except "My Bird Performs," "The Smartest Monkeys," "War Dance" and "Bungalow" (Colin Moulding). All tracks have been digitally remastered. XTC's NONSUCH falls somewhere between the high-polish shine of ORANGES & LEMONS and the pastoral reverie of SKYLARKING. The album also marked the end of the band's dealings withtheir original label, the beginning of protracted legal maneuverings, and a seven year gap in releases (ended with APPLE VENUS VOLUME ONE in 1999). The generous total of seventeen songs was also the result of the three-year recording gap preceding it. Included are ample rewards ranging from the rocking ("The Ballad Of Peter Pumpkinhead," "Crocodile," "The Disappointed") to the soothing ("My Bird Performs," "Holly Up On Poppy," "Humble Daisy"). As always, a distinctly British sense of place, manner and language pervades the songs (in a manner not unlike The Kink's VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY). SKU: 1061069

Peter Criss
Personnel: Peter Criss (vocals, drums, percussion); Bill Cuomo (conductor, keyboards, synthesizer); Stan Penridge (guitar, background vocals); Art Munson, John Tropea, Steve Lukather, Eliot Randall (guitar); Michael Carnahan (saxophone); Richard Gerstein (keyboards); Bill Bodine, Neil Jason (bass); Allan Schwartzerg (drums); Lenny Castro (percussion); Davey Faragher, Tommy Faragher, Danny Faragher, Anne Sutton, Gordon Gordy, Jimmy Faragher, Vini Poncia, Maxine Dixon, Maxine Willard, Julia Tillman (background vocals). Producers: Vini Poncia, Peter Criss,Sean Delaney. Engineers: Bob Schaper, Mike Stone, Dave Wittman. Includes liner notes by Robert V. Conte. Remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sterling Sound, New York, New York). Prior to joining Kiss, Peter Criss spent years honing his drumming chops in numerous New York City-area bands, playing other styles besides Kiss's heavy metal. For his 1978 Kiss solo album, Criss reconnected with a member of one of his old bands, Stan Penridge, with whom he co-wrote the majority of the tunes. Sensing that most fans would want to hear more ballads in the vein of his 1976 hit with Kiss, "Beth," several are included: "Don't You Let Me Down," "Easy Thing," "Kiss the Girl Goodbye," and "I Can't Stop the Rain." The more rock-oriented selections are more mellow than Kiss's usual fare, with a cover of "I'm Gonna Love You,'" as well as the originals "Tossin' and Turnin'," "You Matter to Me," and "That's the Kind of Sugar Papa Likes." Forget About It
Personnel: Alison Krauss (vocals, fiddle, strings); Pat Bergeson (acoustic & electric guitars); Ron Block, Dan Tyminski (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Jerry Douglas (dobro, lap steel guitar); Sam Bush (mandolin, slide mandolin, background vocals); Joey Miskulin (accordion); Matt Rollings (piano); Barry Bales (acoustic & electric basses, background vocals); Viktor Krauss (acoustic bass); Jim Keltner, Kenny Malone (drums); Dolly Parton, Lyle Lovett, Evelyn Cox, Sidney Cox, Suzanne Cox (background vocals). Recorded at Emerald Sound Studios and Seventeen Grand Recording, Nashville, Tennessee. FORGET ABOUT IT was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Country Album and for Best Engineered Album, Non Classical. "Forget About It" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. Alison Krauss is a genuine rarity: a bluegrass singer and fiddle player who achieved popularity without altering or commercializing her sound. On FORGET ABOUT IT, she again fuses bluegrass, country, and pop influences, covering unlikely tunes and making them sound fresh andnew. Though there are very few true bluegrass tunes in this set, the bluegrass sound is here in full force. The close harmonies, Krauss' high, lonesome soprano, and the traditional-sounding dobro and fiddle are all at the heart of the sound here. The songs are mostly slow, subdued expressions of romantic melancholy and heartbreak. The musicianship is, as usual, both immaculate and inspired. Dolly Parton and Lyle Lovett show up to give harmony to the lovely closing track, "Dreaming My Dreams With You." FORGET ABOUT IT also contain some of Krauss' most memorable singing. A beautiful piece of work. SKU: 5053956

Her Chess Years
Personnel includes: Minnie Riperton, The Gems, Rotary Connection. Includes liner notes by Robert Pruter. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This is part of the Chess Records 50th Anniversary series. Although Minnie Riperton is best known for her '70s solo work, especially the1975 hit single "Loving You," the Chicago native first began recording in the early '60s. Two of her earliest singles, recorded with the girl group The Gems, open this disc, followed by a 1966 single, "Lonely Girl," recorded under the name Andrea Davis. Riperton also used that pseudonym in the Rotary Connection, and 14 tracks by that pioneering psychedelic soul outfit complete this CD. The Rotary Connection, under the leadership of Charles Stephney (later of Earth Wind and Fire) and featuring dual lead vocals by Riperton and Sidney Barnes, foreshadowed both Norman Whitfield's "Cloud Nine"-era work with the Temptations and the edgier early albums by Funkadelic, but with a greater rock emphasis. The unusual combination of Riperton's stunning, near-operatic vocals over heavy guitars on Cream and Jimi Hendrix covers make these songs odd but entertaining. SKU: 4123699

Recorded at Egrem Studios, Havana, Cuba. BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB PRESENTS IBRAHIM FERRER was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Tropical Latin Performance. BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB PRESENTS IBRAHIM FERRER was nominated for the 2000 Latin Grammy Award for Best Traditional Tropical Performance. BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB PRESENTS IBRAHIM FERRER won the 2000 Billboard Latin Music Award for Album Of The Year by a Male Performer and won for Album Of The Year by a New Artist. BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB PRESENTS IBRAHIM FERRER was nominated for the 2000 Latin Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album. Why the whole world wasn't privileged with the voice of this angel-faced singer until he reached his 70s is open to debate. What is certain though, is that this first major solo outing shines a long overdue spotlight on one of the most wonderful Bolero/roots artists to ever emerge in Cuban music. Like the humble Parisian baker on the corner who makes stellar croissants out of what mightotherwise be a banal commonbread, Ferrer performs these romantic standards with a divine usualness that makes them burst with love. Whirling in the mid-20th century time warp that is Cuba, this stellar studio opus bears many similarities to that of the Grammy-winning BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB. Many friends from that project are again on hand, including producer/slide guitar stylist Ry Cooder, Eliades Ochoa on guitar, pianist Ruben Gonzalez and the superb vocalist Omara Portuondo, although the gentle background harmonies by the women of Gemo Cuatro and sumptuous string arrangements are wonderful new additions. "Silencio" is surely one of the loveliest pieces here, with a heart-melting duet by Ferrer and Portuondo--the juxtaposition of Cuban guitar legend Manuel Galban's vibrato fills and Cooder's Hawaiian-style slide tastefully ornament the song's romantic imagery. Pork Soda
Primus: Les Claypool (vocals, mandolin, bass); Larry Lalonde (guitar, six-string banjo); Tim "Herb" Alexander (drums). While some longtime Primus fans feel that 1993's PORK SODA was the beginning of the end of the group, it was Primus' biggest commercial success to date, making them part of the 90's alternative rock royalty. Claypool's usually lighthearted lyrics take a turn to the dark side on the murder tale "My Name Is Mud" and the suicidal "Bob," but his biting sense of humor resurfaceson such tracks as "Welcome to this World," "DMV," "Nature Boy," and "Mr. Krinkle." PORK SODA was Primus first album to be recorded in the cushy confines of Les Claypool's house, giving the album a more "made at home" feel and sound than previous releases. SKU: 1005641

Keep It Pimp And Gangsta [PA]
Dirty: Mr. G. Stacka, Big Pimp (rap vocals). Additional personnel includes: Pastor Troy, Khao, DBK, Mannie Fresh, Lil Burn One, Mr. Blue, Ms. Flossy, Silk. Producers include: Dr. Fangaz, Kevin "Khao" Cates, Mannie Fresh, Cool, Dre. Though Dirty's lazy, sleazy style occasionally sounds mild-mannered compared to the genre's more aggressive purveyors (Petey Pablo and the like), with KEEP IT PIMP & GANGSTA, the duo stakes its claim as the definitive keeper of the pure Dirty South flame. All the classicelements are here: the sing-songy, drawl-infused rapping (which Nelly distilled, exaggerated, and brought to the mainstream), the bare-bones production (most tracks consist of little more than a stuttering bass/drums pattern and a single endlessly looping synth melody), and the thematic combination of gangsta and old school party lyrics. Both Big Pimp and Mr. G Stacka are immensely talented rhymers, spitting out rapid-fire tongue twisters with enviable clarity and a buttery, relaxed sense of rhythm. Most importantly, however, Dirty has a distinct awareness of the humor inherent in its schtick, and the group's playfulness keeps KEEP IT PIMP & GANGSTA fresh from start to finish. SKU: 1081699

These Are Special Times
Personnel includes: Celine Dion (vocals); Dion Family (vocals); Peter Zizzo (guitar, programming); Bryan Adams (acoustic & electric guitars, bass); Kamil Rustam (acoustic guitar); Larry Salzman, Marc Shulman, Ira Siegel, ChieliMinucci, John Chiodini, Michael Thompson (guitar); Vancouver Orchestra (strings); Richie Cannata (saxophone); Bobby Franceschini, Bill Harris (alto saxophone); David Foster (piano, keyboards); Diana Krall, Shane Keister (piano); Loris Holland (Hammond B-3 organ); Phil Western (keyboards); Heather Hinton (organ); Tom Rainer (synthesizer); Chuck Domanico (bass); John Robinson, Shawn Pelton (drums); Bashiri Johnson (percussion); Steve Skinner (keyboard & drum programming). Producers: David Foster, Ric Wake, Bryan Adams, R. Kelly. Engineers includes: Felipe Elgueta, Randy Staub, Phil Western. "The Prayer" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s). Whether or not you're a fan, it's undeniable that Celine Dion is the people's siren of choice in turn-of-the-millennium America. Part of the reason for that (apart from her superhuman pipes) is the way she throws herself into a song with total emotional commitment, taking nothing lightly. That kind of earnestness serves her in good stead on this collection of Christmas tunes. Tackling both the traditional ("Ave Maria," "Adeste Fideles") and the modern (John Lennon's "Happy Xmas") Dion invests these yuletide songs with just the right mix of reverence and authority. Joined by everyone from R&B love man R. Kelly to Opera crossover superstar Andrea Bocelli, Dion proves that even a concept as overdone as the Holiday album can sound fresh and substantive when a performer of her ilk is involved. Recorded between 1956 and 1977. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Every few years since Elvis Presley's death, RCA Records has released a collection of Elvis' love songs, usually in conjunction with Valentine's Day. LOVE SONGS is the label's 1998 entry in the series. These packages vary in length andtrack selection, although each invariably includes the biggest romantic hits: "Love Me Tender," "Are You Lonesome Tonight?", and "Can't Help Falling in Love." Of these albums--others include HEART AND SOUL and A VALENTINE GIFT FOR YOU--LOVE SONGS is the most conservatively programmed. Nearly all its eighteen tracks will be familiar even to casual Elvis fans. Among the megahits included here (besides those previously mentioned) are "Surrender," "It's Now Or Never," and "The Wonder of You." LOVE SONGS includes several heartbreak songs, among them "Suspicious Minds," "You Gave Me a Mountain," and "Kentucky Rain." Among the few lesser-known tracks are such fine offerings as "That's Someone You'll Never Forget" (the b-side of "All Shook Up") and "Puppet On A String" (from the movie "Girl Happy"). SKU: 4129570

Prayers On Fire
The Birthday Party: Nick Cave (vocals, saxophone, piano, drums); Rowland S. Howard (vocals, guitar, saxophone); MickHarvey (guitar, piano, organ, snare drum, background vocals); Tracy Pew (clarinet, acoustic & electric bass); Phillip Jackson (trumpet); Phil Calvert (drums). Principally recorded at A.A.V. Studio 2, Melbourne, Australia in December 1980 and January 1981. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Nick Cave is widely acknowledged as one of our most mature songwriting talents these days, but there was a time when he seemed to be the most unhinged soul in Christendom. The Birthday Party's performances, whether in the studio or on stage, were always compelling, and they left behind no more powerful document than this shattering record. PRAYERS ON FIRE, an intense, disquieting effort, was their first international release after relocating to London from Australia. While the violence of the group's urban rockabilly rumbles underneath, often to no obvious linear structure, Cave's lyrics are informed, acute, but utterly unyielding and savage. Check the no-compromise ferocity of "Nick The Stripper" and "King Ink," still among his best songs. SKU: 1006013

Very Best Of Yes, The (Highlights)
Engineers include: Gerald Chevin, Eddie Offord, John Timperley. Recorded between 1969 to 1987. All tracks have been digitally remastered. With songs that often rival classical music for length and sheer ambition, Yes is not a group whose work can easily be distilled to a single-length compact disc. However, for those looking to skim off the cream off a long and distinguished career, THE VERY BEST OF YES will do the trick, although it may well serve to whet the appetite for more. This collection is arranged chronologically, beginning with "Survival" off the group's self-titled debut record and finishing with its last certifiable hit, "Rhythm of Love." Although it does not present a complete picture of the group's progress, the collection does chronicle Yes's major phases. Like many bands of the late '60s, Yes began writing songs that echoed the love ethos of the era ("Time and a Word") before graduating to full-fledged space rock on songs like "Starship Trooper." During its golden age, Yes had FM radio hits ("Roundabout," "I've Seen All Good People"),and during the mid- to late '70s, the group continued to refine its approach with fine compositions like the melodious "Wondrous Stories" and the raucous "Going for the One." The surprising #1 hit, "Owner of a Lonely Heart" captures the group in its more stripped-down '80s incarnation. SKU: 5065693

Nocturne
Siouxsie & The Banshees: Siouxsie Sioux (vocals); Steve Severin, Robert Smith (guitar); Budgie (drums, percussion). Recorded live at Royal Albert Hall, London, England on September 30 & October 1, 1983. Who ever would have assumed that Sex Pistols hanger-on Siouxsie Sioux would not only form a unique and compelling group of her own, but sustain it for decades after the Pistols dissolution? Although the band lost steam towards the '90s playing catch-up to newer trends and movements (who themselves owed Siouxsie a thing or two), at their peak the Banshees were a force to bereckoned with. NOCTURNE is a document of the classic early '80s line-up captured live at the Royal Albert Hall in 1983. Without overdubs (as the album insert proudly proclaims), the Banshees manage to convey a multi-faceted sense of exoticism and menace, often within the same song. Classics like "Israel" and "Painted Bird" even seem more compelling stripped of the studio gloss and multi-tracking of Siouxsie's voice. Some songs ("Spellbound" and "Pulled to Bits") lose a little something in the translation, however. Fortunately the band seems to be enjoying itself (even without any stage patter from Souxsie), especially on the raucous Beatles covers "Helter Skelter" and "Dear Prudence." Perhaps not the best introduction for new fans, but a great recording of a band at its peak. SKU: 4124903
