13
Blur: Damon Albarn (vocals, keyboards); Graham Coxon (guitar); Alex James (bass); Dave Rowntree (drums). Additional personnel includes: Jason Cox (drums); The London Community Gospel Choir. Engineers: John Smith, Jason Cox, William Orbit. 13 marks Blur hitting the 10-year mark as a band. During their first decade, the band went from being lumped in with Manchester bands such as Happy Mondays to becoming Brit-pop foils to Oasis. Their self-titled 1997 release found them inhabiting the same lo-fi neighborhood as American indie rockers like Pavement. On 13, the London based quartet joins forces with techno-pop producer William Orbit on a record whose inclusiveness manages to find room for both the gorgeous, choir-adorned "Tender" and "B.L.U.R.E.M.I.," a song that sounds like the illegitimate offspring of Wire, Devo, and Rick Dees. Blur's work with Orbit finds them plunging deep into a lake of space-rock overflowing with wondrous soundssuch as the pinging, Floyd-like tinkling, and hypnotic rhythms of "Battle," and the sputtering transmissions and bristling distortion permeating "Bugman." In straddling the dissolving lines between genres in the late '90s, Blur manages to trod the same ground as Underworld on "Trailerpark" and subscribes to the aforementioned jittery, lo-fi aesthetics on "Trimm Trabb." Despite all this experimentation, Blur still sneaks in perfect pop nuggets such as "Coffee & TV," where cheery harmonies share space with a squealing guitar. SKU: 1003120

Impressions
Personnel: John Coltrane (soprano & tenor saxophones); Eric Dolphy (bass clarinet); McCoy Tyner (piano); Reggie Workman, Jimmy Garrison (bass); Elvin Jones, Roy Haynes (drums). Producer: Bob Thiele. Reissue producer: Bryan Koniarz. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on September 18, 1962 and April 29, 1963 and live at the Village Vanguard, New York, New York on November 3, 1961. Originally released on Impulse (42). Includes liner notes by Bill Kirchner. Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Kevin Reeves (Universal Mastering Studios-East). One of John Coltrane's most popular, influential recitals, IMPRESSIONS derives its two extended blowing tracks from the saxophonist's famous November 5, 1961 gig at New York's Village Vanguard. The brief, charming blues and ballad were recorded in the fall of 1962 and the spring of 1963, respectively. On IMPRESSIONS Coltrane acknowledged his roots, while striking out in new directions. The live version of "India," featuring dual bassists (Reggie Workman and Jimmy Garrison) and reed innovator Eric Dolphy (a regular member of the group in 1961-62), was an enormously influential work both in and outof the jazz community. Roger McGuinn of The Byrds often cited it as the inspiration for "Eight Miles High," and the vocalized, near-eastern overtones of Coltrane and Dolphy as the stimulus for his use of a heavily amplified 12-string guitar. It doesn't take much of an imaginative leap to see why. Coltrane was enchanted by the harmonic simplicity and melodic/rhythmic complexity of his new modality, and the bassists essay a moaning melodic backbeat, as Elvin Jones doubles up with a serpentine cymbal pulse. Coltrane pivots off of one note with reedy soprano testimonies that tease Jones into multiple climaxes, while Dolphy's rocking bass clarinet ragas amplify the melodic tension between the horns and the hypnotic repetition of the rhythm. "Impressions" is an affectionate uptempo nod to his earlier modal flights with Miles Davis, and it is clear from Jimmy Garrison's comanding pulse on this tune that Trane had found his bassist. Coltrane's new conception freed up rhythm sections from their metronomic duties of the past, so Garrison and Elvin respond to Trane's string of short phrases and torrid cries with a loose, counterpunching brand of conversational 4/4. Garrison's ability to move seamlessly between vamp and swing beats, his innate sense of form on non-metric materials, allowed the quartet to abandon strict timekeeping in favor of a freely breathing pulse. Jazz would never be the same. SKU: 1035600

Pieces Of You
Personnel: Jewel Kilcher (guitar, vocals); Kris Wilkinson (strings); Robbie Buchanan, Charlotte Caffey (piano); Spooner Oldham (keyboards); Tim Drummond, Mark Howard (bass); Oscar Butterworth (drums). Recorded at the Broken Arrow Ranch, Woodside, California and live at Innerchange Coffeehouse, SanDiego, California. All songs written or co-written by Jewel Kilcher. Jewel was nominated for the 1997 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. "Who Will Save Your Soul" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. When this Alaskan decided to give up her day job and move into her Volkswagen van in 1993, she began an almost storybook ascendance to the upper echelon of singer-songwriters. Like so many other aspiring musicians with a guitar and a story to tell, Jewel is a keen observer of human behavior. But it is her voice, a classically-trained instrument that has developed far beyond Jewel's 22 years, that makes her debut album--much of which was recorded at Neil Young's Broken Arrow Ranch with pieces of his HARVEST MOON band--such a joy. Jewel's is a special voice, one that can portray enormous emotional range with only slight alterations in color and texture. She sings "I'm Sensitive" with coy innocence, and gives the title track a biting, scolding quality. "Amen," the album's finale, is perhaps Jewel's most stunning vocal display, with her gorgeous, ethereal falsetto lifting us into a world where beautiful voices can speak volumes. SKU: 4123907

I Luciferi
Danzig includes: Glenn Danzig (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Todd Youth (guitar); Howie Pyro (bass); Joey C. (drums). The tire around the middle might be a little thicker and the imagery more along the lines of comic books, but DANZIG 777 - I LUCIFERI finds its namesake churning out the type of hard-rock-flavored goth that makes mature adults don Doc Martens and plenty of black. Leading a quartet that includes former D Generation bassist Howie Pyro, Danzig doesn't skimp on the heaviness, whether he's growling his way through stompers ("Kiss The Skull"), bullying his waythrough dirges ("Without Light, I Am"), or howling over hard-hitting grooves ("Naked Witch"). Most notable is the ease with which the burly singer busts out rap-rock couplets on the Rollins-flavored "Wicked Pussycat," sure to freak out old school Misfits and Samhain fans. Not quite a reinvention of the wheel, DANZIG 777 - I LUCIFERI nevertheless manages to prove that Danzig can still work that old black magic. SKU: 1072538

Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim
Full title: Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim. Personnel includes: Frank Sinatra, Antonio Jobim (vocals); Claus Ogerman (conductor); Don-Um Romao (drums). Producer: Sonny Burke. Reissue producer: Gregg Geller. Includes original release liner notes by Stan Cornyn. All tracks have been digitally remastered. After bossa nova exploded in the U.S in the early Sixties, its primary compositional exponent, Jobim, became known as an artist of unparalleled subtlety, invention and swing. It was only a matter of time, then, before he hooked up with the American who epitomized those qualities. Collaborating on this recording, Sinatra and Jobim both retained enough respect for each other to allow for a true fusion of styles, unfettered by either territorialism or obsequiousness. Sinatra's relaxed, swinging style turned out to be a natural fit for Jobim's slinky, harmonically sophisticated compositions, and Jobim's conductor of choice Claus Ogerman and percussionist Dom-Um Romao are able to finda natural groove with the singer's unique, jazzy phrasing. Since much of Jobim's work was influenced by American music to begin with, it's not such a shock to hear Americanized versions of "How Insensitive" and "Meditiation." Similarly, when Cole Porter's "I Concentrate On You" is lent a Brazilian beat, it sounds like somebody just thought of adding peanut butter to jelly. SKU: 1014327

Teaser And The Firecat
Personnel: Cat Stevens (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Alun Davies (guitar); Andreas Toumazis, Angelos Hatzipavli (bouzouki); Del Newman (strings); Rick Wakeman (piano); Larry Steele (bass, congas); Gerry Conway, Harvey Burns (drums). Producer: Paul Samwell-Smith. Reissue producer: Bill Levenson. Digitally remastered by Ted Jenson (December 1999, Sterling Sound, New York, New York). Following in the tradition of his previous effort, with a similar cover design and feel, Cat continued his painful journey through life. Even then, there was a sadness linked to his happy songs such as "Moonshadow," "How Can I Tell You" and "Tuesday's Dead." Our favourite school hymn was also given the treatment - how did he manage to make such a happy verse sound so sad? The answer, as we have all seen, was in himself; he was a rare songwriter buthe was mostly a very troubled soul, something he seems to have resolved through his conversion to the Muslim faith. He won, we lost him. SKU: 1034411

Lonely Star (The Prestige Sessions)
Personnel: Chet Baker (flugelhorn); George Coleman (tenor saxophone); Kirk Lightsey (piano); Herman Wright (bass); Roy Brooks (drums). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey from August 23-25, 1965. Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler, Jack McKinney, Bob Porter, Michael Morgan and Mark Gardner. Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1996, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Chet Baker began playing the flugelhorn when his trumpet was stolen from a Paris club. In August1965, he spent three days in a studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey recording material as a quintet for Prestige Records that resulted in five fine albums. Tracks from the first two, SMOKIN' and GROOVIN,' are compiled into this release. The outstanding quintet includes the tenor saxophonist George Coleman, who was part of the Miles Davis Quintet. His tough, angular playing is prominently showcased throughout these sessions and he is a wonderful foil to Baker's emotional lyricism. Baker's playing here is very inspired, energized, and fiery, and less introspective than his previous recordings which focused on lyrical ballads. Highlights include the standard "Have You Met Miss Jones" and the bop classic "So Easy." SKU: 5046260

Pat Metheny Group
Pat Metheny Group: Pat Metheny (6- & 12-string guitars); Lyle Mays (autoharp, piano, synthesizer); Mark Egan (bass); Dan Gottlieb (drums). Recorded at Talent Studio, Oslo, Norway in January 1978. Guitarist Pat Metheny's atmospheric, "smooth" (when that word didn't carry uglyconnotations) jazz was just about ready to set the world afire when this Pat Metheny Group effort hit the racks. Metheny's was one of the tighter outfits in modern jazz when this eponymous album was released in 1978 on ECM, the label that really mattered for them in the '70s. The Group's idiosyncratic blending of folk, blues stylings, improv spaciness, and supple rock underpinnings were unlike anything then happening in jazz. The opener, "San Lorenzo," establishes the mood. Ten-plus minutes of shimmering cymbals pierce a veil of stark bass, luminescent synthesizer motifs, and, of course, Metheny's resolutely gorgeous six- and 12-string picking. The music refracts differing hues in a prismatic puzzle. Sparse and beautiful. SKU: 5071689

Live Seeds
The 1997 reissue of LIVE SEEDS contains all new packaging. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds: Nick Cave (vocals); Mick Harvey (guitar, xylophone, background vocals); Blixa Bargeld (guitar, background vocals); Conway Savage (piano, organ, background vocals); Martyn P. Casey (bass, background vocals); Thomas Wydler (drums). Recorded in Europe and Australia from 1992-1993. Nick Cave has gone through many changes in his career: from his bellowing mad-singer days in the Birthday Party to blues-inspired-lounge-singer-in-Eternity's-waiting-room. In between, he recorded live shows in 1992 and 1993 for LIVE SEEDS, and it ably sums up the power of Cave's music up to that time. In his solo career, Cave has fallen under the spell of American blues and gospel and Anglo-American mythology, and his interest/obsession shines throughout these inspired performances. "Papa Won't Leave You Henry"is structured like a sea shanty, but the lyrics are about a dark journey of brothels and murder. "Brother My Cup Is Empty" is almost a creepy, bluesy country song (written by Kurt Weil and Bertold Brecht, if you can imagine that). "Tupelo" is another dark blues-drenched tale, and the gospel-inspired closer, "New Morning" finishes on a hopeful note. The Bad Seeds' playing is punchy and driven, with individual players punctuating the singer's tales appropriately. Cave is part weary world traveler, part sodden blues singer, part the demented preacher from NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (where preacher Robert Mitchum had "love" and "hate" tattooed on the knuckles of his hands)--declaring, raving, doing battle with his demons. With Cave, you can never tell who wins. SKU: 1011282

Greatest Hits
Journey: Steve Perry (vocals); Neal Schon (guitar); Gregg Rolie, Jonathan Cain (keyboards); Ross Valory, Randy Jackson (bass); Steve Smith, Aynsley Dunbar, Larrie Londin (drums). Producers: Mike Stone, Roy Thomas Baker, Steve Perry,Geoffrey Workman, Kevin Elson. Along with Styx and REO Speedwagon, Journey ruled the charts and radio airwaves in the early '80s. And like the aforementioned bands, Journey began in the '70s, so obviously the compilers of its 1988 GREATEST HITS release had a lot of material to choose from. Journey's sound was a merger of hard rock, compliments of guitarist Neal Schon, and the melodic pop/ballads of singer Steve Perry. This resulted in such classic rock radio staples as "Any Way You Want It," "Separate Ways," "Open Arms," "Don't Stop Believin'," "Wheel in the Sky," and "Who's Crying Now," all included here. Intermodulation
Personnel: Bill Evans (piano); Jim Hall (guitar). Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, EnglewoodCliffs, New Jersey on April 7 and May 10, 1966. Includes liner notes by James Isaacs. INTERMODUATION is a 1966 reunion between two lyrical instrumentalists whose first encounter in 1962 produced the starkly beautiful UNDERCURRENT. This new date is a bit brighter in mood, as the bouncing version of Cole Porter's "I've Got You Under My Skin" establishes at the start. In general, the differing tonal properties of piano and guitar tend to clash, but Evans and Hall are both masters of tone if nothing else; they are able to mimic, then complement and finally deepen each other's sound with each passing chord. "Jazz Samba" is another sprightly number, but the real gems here are the pianist's reflective "Turn Out The Stars" and Hall's guitar meditation "All Across The City," as well as a truly gorgeous version of Joe Zawinul's "Angel Face." Scratch
Personnel: Kenny Barron (piano); Dave Holland (bass); Daniel Humair (drums). Recorded at ERAS Studio, New York, New York on March 11, 1985. Includes liner notes by Michael Cuscuna. This session finds American pianist Kenny Barron in the company of two Europeans, British bassist Dave Holland and Swiss drummer Daniel Humair. As any great trio should, the three function as a whole entity, resulting in a delightfully intriguing datefull of both challenging and inviting music. Barron takes composing duty for all but the Carmen Lundy ballad "Quiet Times," and Holland's exceptional "Jacob's Ladder." The pianist's feisty "Scratch" is the opener, allowing the musicians some highly rambunctious rhythmic interaction, while the floating waltz "Water Lily" is an ideal vehicle for Barron's graceful touch and Humair's dancing cymbal work. The disc's centerpiece, however, is the burning "Third Eye," which finds the trio locked in a dynamic three-way improvisational battle. Finally, the bopping "And Then Again" draws this stellar session to a swinging close with hopes for further international meetings to come. SKU: 1030525

Classics (The Early Years)
Also available in a 3-pack with THE JAZZ SINGER and BEAUTIFUL NOISE. Neil Diamond first achieved international success in the 1970s and '80s with his splashy, big-budget productions. But in the mid-'60s, Diamond was just another respected journeyman songwriter who, like Paul Simon, Lou Reed, and many others, had cut his teeth cranking out tunes at New York's celebrated Brill Building, a center for post-World War Two American songwriting. During this time, Diamond wrote a flurry of excellent songs that have taken on a life of their own. CLASSICS: THE EARLY YEARS captures the singer at what some consider his creative apex. The mid-1960s' "Red, Red Wine," known by many listeners from the chirpy UB40 reggae version, is sung with stunning dolor, while the moody "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon," featured in Quentin Tarrantino's film PULP FICTION in a version by Chicago's Urge Overkill, still soundsfresh after more than a few decades. In addition to the other American pop classics "Kentucky Woman," "Cherry, Cherry," and "I'm a Believer," the latter successfully covered by the Monkees, CLASSICS: THE EARLY YEARS features some lesser-known Diamond gems, including "Shilo" and the positively terrific "Solitary Man." It's a must for any fan of Neil Diamond or first-rate Brill Building songwriting. SKU: 1006649
