Genius Of Modern Music Vol.2 [Remastered]
Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); Sahib Shihab, Lou Donaldson (alto saxophone); Lucky Thompson (tenor saxophone); Kenny Dorham (trumpet); Milt Jackson (vibraphone); Nelson Boyd, Al McKibbon (bass); Art Blakey, Max Roach (drums). Producer: Alfred Lion. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at WOR Studios, New York, New York on July 23, 1951 and May 30, 1952. Originally released on Bluenote (1511). Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal. Digitally remastered by Rudy Van Gelder. This is part of Blue Note's Rudy Van Gelder Editions series. The music of pianist/composer Thelonious Monk has always inspired profound devotion amongst the hippest fans and musicians. Swing ear stars such as Coleman Hawkins and Cootie Williams were among his earliest and most vocal admirers, while Monk's influence on Bud Powell, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane (among others) was profound. As a result, his remarkable body of written work and recordings form an aesthetic cornerstone of modern jazz. And yet, because of the challenging nature of his music, his fabled personal eccentricities, and some trumped-up criminalcharges which cost him his cabaret card (essentially denying him the opportunity to perform in any New York City establishment serving liquor, between 1951 and '57), recognition and success were a long time coming for this American original. The works contained on GENIUS OF MODERN MUSIC, VOL. 2 are some of the most remarkable performances and compositions in the history of American music, featuring some of Monk's greatest collaborations. With its bluesy outline, classic rhythmic breaks and superb melodic contours, "Straight No Chaser" has been a jazz standard since Monk first introduced it with this recording. Art Blakey's animated 12-bar intro sets a perfect tempo with an implied triplet feeling, as Monk's solo proceeds directly from Al McKibbon's sturdy two-beat pulse and the drummer's polyrhythmic proddings. Monk's laid-back groove belies the fierce tension his rhythmic gamesmanship, percussive dissonances, pregnant pauses, horn-like phrases and bluesy bent tones impart. All Monk tunes are full of teasing interactive themes and startling structural contrasts. As an accompanist, Monk doesn't simply feed vibraphone soloist Milt Jackson chordal backgrounds on the jagged "Criss Cross"--he enunciates a secondary theme of orchestral gravity. And few musicians are willing or able to take on the daunting melodic and rhythmic challenges of such abstract sculptures as the zig-zagging "Four In One," the skittering "Skippy," and the convoluted "Hornin' In" and "Sixteen." Trances/Drones
Recorded in the early '80s at the time he was performing his all-night "sleep" concerts, TRANCES/DRONES is one of Robert Rich's most minimal, archly ambient documents. This two-disc set is Rich in pre-techno tribal mode, featuring just six extensive tracks, five of which eclipse the 20-minute-plus mark. Typical of the set (and the way Rich was operating at the time) is the opening "Cave Paintings," a nearly somnambulant excursion into half-dream states and the peripheries of REM sleep. With its teeming cricket hordes, delicately placed distant bell sounds, and forlorn, deepsynth lines, this daunting track not only evokes a variety of farflung landscapes and environmental incursions, but places the listener in a heightened sense of awareness, serenity, and introspection, much like Steve Roach's equally galvanic QUIET MUSIC and STRUCTURES FROM SILENCE recordings. Rich's palette here is a lot more textured; he draws upon a slightly more active tonal sprawl, complete with occasional sonic illumination of the dusky horizons. Supple, gorgeous stuff. SKU: 1041930

Revolution Starts Now, The
Personnel include: Steve Earle (vocals, guitar, mandola, harmonica, harmonium, organ); Eric "Roscoe" Ambel (vocals, guitar); Kelley Looney (vocals, bass guitar); Will Rigby (vocals, drums, percussion); Emmylou Harris (vocals); Patrick Earle (percussion). Recording information: Room & Board, Hermitage, Tennessee. Steve Earle is widely known as a tireless political activist who's not afraid to use his music to further the causes for which he fights. In 2004, America was in dire need of forward-looking activism, and Earle responded with THE REVOLUTION STARTS NOW. The album was written and recorded quickly in order for Earle to get his two cents in before the Presidential election, and it turned out to be both his most overtly political and most effectively concise offering to date. With a mix of country and straightforward rock & roll, Earle engages in rabble-rousing (the title track), tells the tales of people victimized by the war in Iraq ("Home to Houston," "Rich Man's War"), and lambasts stifling conservative forces on the homefront ("F the CC"). There are a couple of love songs thrown in for good measure, and they're all the more affecting for their marked contrast. THE REVOLUTION STARTS NOW seamlessly blends the personal and the political without a trace ofmawkishness or didacticism. SKU: 6568554

Central Reservation
Personnel: Beth Orton (vocals, guitar, harmonium); Ted Barnes (acoustic, electric & slide guitars, bouzouki, mandolin); David Roback (acoustic guitar); Ben Watt (guitar, keyboards, programming, sound effects); Ben Harper, Dr. Robert (guitar); Beki Doe, Howard Gott, Ruth Gottlieb, Calina De La Mare, Lucy Wilkins, Dmitri Van Zwanenburg (violin); Robert Spriggs, Becca Ware (viola); Oliver Kraus, Sarah Wilson (cello); Sean Read (piano, keyboards); Dr. John (piano); Dave Friedman (vibraphone); Andrew Waterworth (acoustic bass); Henry Olsen, Jerry Meyhan, Ali Friend (bass); Will Blanchard (drums); Lascelles Gordon (percussion); Terry Callier (background vocals). Producers include: Victor Van Vugt, Dr. Robert, Mark "Spike" Stent, Beth Orton, David Roback. Engineers include: Victor Van Vugt, Trevor Smith, Giles Hall. Like Orton's debut TRAILER PARK, CENTRAL RESERVATION combines folk-pop reminiscent of Sandy Denny and Nick Drake with '90s production sensibilities. While the first record benefited from some well-placed electronic touches, CENTRAL RESERVATION is more organic, the slightly jazzy arrangements based largely around acoustic instrumentation. The production here is not spare however, as Orton makes good use of a string section, the piano work of Dr. John and the vocals of Terry Callier (with whom she recorded the EP BEST BIT). The cool detachment of Orton's Sandy Dennyish voice keeps the inviting, friendly arrangements from getting too warm and fuzzy, even when her guitar and voice are the sonic focus. Guest producers David Roback (of Opal and Mazzy Star fame) and Ben Watt (half of Everything But The Girl) lend a good deal to the moody soundscapes, particularly on the electronic-tinged second version of the tile song. With its added layer of textural atmospherics, CENTRAL RESERVATION is intriguing, accessible folk-pop at its best. SKU: 1002842

Pick The Sickle And The Shovel, The
Gravediggaz: RZA, Prince Paul "Dr. Strange", Frukwan "Da Gatekeeper", Poetic "Grym Reaper" (vocals). Additional personnel: Shabazz The Disciple, Omen, The Aleem Brothers, Killah Priest, 9th Prince, Sunz Of Man (vocals); Ian Berkeley (keyboards); Helis Rogers, Blue Rasberry (background vocals). Producers include: RZA, Fourth Disciple, Truemaster, Poetic, Goldfinghaz. When the Gravediggaz first stepped onto the scene, they shocked listeners with their horror-core hip-hop. The group comprises four MCs, The RZA, Frukwan, Poetic and Prince Paul, each already known for their thoughtful lyrical content. On their sophomore album, THE PICK, THE SICKLE, & THE SHOVEL, the Gravediggaz are out to resurrect the minds of the mentally deceased, as they did with their debut, SIX FEET DEEP. The RZA's haunting production is the perfect complement for the topics tackled by the group. The Gravediggaz don't just rap, they preach. Their topics range from the "Unexplained" to their own brand of "Fairytalez." With their distinctive, left-field style, the foursome are the only MCs inhip-hop who forgo "keeping it real" in favor of "keeping it surreal." SKU: 1006723

Second Sacred Concert
Personnel: Duke Ellington (piano); Alice Babs, Devonne Gardner, Trish Turner, Roscoe Gill (vocals); Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney, Russell Procope, Paul Gonsalves, Jimmy Hamilton (reeds); Cat Anderson,Cootie Williams, Mercer Ellington, Herbie Jones, Money Johnson (trumpet); Lawrence Brown, Buster Cooper, Bennie Green (trombones); Chuck Connors (bass trombone); Jeff Castleman (bass); Sam Woodyard, Steve Little (drums); The A.M.E. Mother Zion Church Choir, The Choirs Of St. Hilda's and St. Hugh's School, Central Connecticut State College Singers, The Frank Parker Singers (background vocals). Includes liner notes by Duke Ellington. "Don't Get Down On Your Knees To Pray Until You Have Forgiven Everyone" and "Father Forgive", have been deleted from the CD release of the 2 LP set. A unique and intriguing project, Ellington performed this concert in 1968 as a sequel to a series which toured over 50 churches and cathedrals in the United States some years before. This ambitious and allegorical piece might be described as a kind of jazz Mass. Musical themes signifying the creation of the world, various biblical scenes, and hymns to God's glory are interspersed with long recitatives by the choir about the presence of the Supreme Being, the tale of the apple, and the importance of belief, love and freedom. The music, while eons removed from his 1920s and '30s jams, is still distinctively Ellington, with decorative, richly textured arrangements and contributions from famous sidemen like Jimmy Hamilton, Cootie Williams and Johnny Hodges. Fans of Duke's secular rave-ups should be forewarned, however: this material is heavily religious, and the concert is more reminiscent of a night in the Vatican than a night at the Cotton Club. Nevertheless, SECOND SACRED CONCERT is yet another of Ellington's always-interesting musical experiments, one that combines his compelling message of devotion with his musical genius. SKU: 1054274

Nine Objects Of Desire
Personnel: Suzanne Vega (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Steve Donnelly (slide guitar, guitar); Tchad Blake (guitar, samples, special effects); Jane Scarpantoni (cello, strings); Mark Feldman, Matthew Pierce, Ted Falcon (strings); Cecilia Sparacio (flute); Don Byron (bass clarinet, clarinet); Dave Douglas (trumpet); Mitchell Froom (Moog synthesizer, keyboards); Sebastian Steinberg (acoustic bass, bass); Bruce Thomas (bass); Pete Thomas (drums, percussion, samples); Jerry Marotta (drums, percussion); Yuval Gabay (drums). Recorded at The Magic Shop, New York, New York. Vega's second collaboration with husband/producer/keyboardist Mitchell Froom expands the sonic palette introduced on 99.9 F to create an atmosphere that is both more open and more distinctive. Froom's ubiquitous synthesizers and samples step aside on several songs to make way for tastefully orchestrated horns and strings. The semi-industrial popof 99.9 F gives way to a more eclectic compositional bent. "Caramel" is a smooth, jazzy ballad that bears a strange kinship to an Astrud Gilberto bossa nova. "Lolita" boasts a lilting samba feel mediated by electronic percussion. This being a Suzanne Vega album, there are also a few introspective acoustic-guitar based plaints. In fact, these (particularly the subtle, eerie narrative "Honeymoon Suite") are among the most memorable of NINE OBJECTS' 13 songs. Elsewhere, colorful, lighthearted arrangements offset dark subject matter, as on "Thin Man" and "Tombstone," both contemplations of mortality. NINE OBJECTS OF DESIRE finds Vega pushing the envelope slightly, while maintaining the quality songcraft that her listeners have come to expect. SKU: 1004745

Faith Hope Love
King's X: Ty Tabor (vocals, guitar); Doug Pinnick (vocals, bass); Jerry Gaskill (drums, background vocals). On their third release, 1990's FAITH HOPE LOVE, King's X stretches out. Only five of the album's 13 tracks are below the four-minute mark, as the trio indulged in their already rich sonic approach. The result wasn't quite as focused as its predecessor, GRETCHEN GOES TO NEBRASKA, but FAITH HOPE LOVE remains one of the trio's finest and most ambitious releases. The album spawned the melodic rocker "It's Love," which became the closest King's X ever came to a crossover MTV/radio hit, but FAITH HOPE LOVE is an incredibly consistent album. Tracks such as "We Are Finding Who We Are," the wicked "Moanjam" (which had been a live showstopper for years before its inclusion here), "I Can't Help It," "Talk To You," and "We Were Born to be Loved" capture King's Xat the height of their prog-rock apex. Pennsylvania
Pere Ubu: Tom Herman, Jim Jones, Steve Mehlman, Michele Temple, David Thomas, Robert Wheeler. When Pere Ubu reformed in 1987 with THE TENEMENT YEAR, the newfound pop elements of their sound disturbed a lot of the band's older fans. The following albums only increased the They Might Be Giants-like skewed pop content to the point that the band had an actual MTV/college radio hit with 1989's "Waiting for Mary." 1998's PENNSYLVANIA is a sudden and startling about face from the poppier albums that preceded it, reverting Pere Ububack to the noisy assaults of the NEW PICNIC TIME era. The return of original Ubu guitarist Tom Herman to the fold likely has much to do with this regained noise-rock immediacy, and singer/songwriter David Thomas responds with some of his most impassioned and bizarre tunes in years. Tubthumper
Chumbawamba: Boff (vocals, guitar); Jude Abbott (vocals, trumpet); Lou Watts (vocals, keyboards); Dunstan Bruce (vocals, percussion); Danbert "The Cat" Nobacon, Alice Nutter (vocals); Paul Greco (bass); Harry Hamer (drums, programming). Additional personnel: Michael Cohen, Kye Coles (vocals); Neil Ferguson (guitar, keyboards); Chopper (cello); Abbott Sauce Works Band (brass); Geoff Clout, Gutter People. Recorded at Woodlands Studio, Castleford, England between August 1996 and February 1997. Rather than opting for the cathartic and visceral approach of fellow agit-prop, anarchist groups such as Crass, Chumbawamba produce cerebral and reflective music on their major label debut TUBTHUMPER. As Gang Of Four's ENTERTAINMENT! was to socialism, TUBTHUMPER is to anarchism. But this isn't the hippie anarcho-ruralism of Gong or sludgy Rage Against The Machine pontification--Chumbawamba knows their theory. TUBTHUMPER mixes textbook anarchism with current musical trends, from jungle and trip-hop to plunderphonics and Britpop. Throughout this mix of styles, the message is heady. Whether it is union corruption in Liverpool's dockworkers strike ("One-By-One") or anti-Catholic proselytization ("Mary, Mary"), the messageis less bomb-throwing Bakunin vitriol and bilious Goldman tirades, and more academic and syncretic. As such, TUBTHUMPER will probably appeal more to the anorak-wearing student type than to members of Class War. Chumbawamba want to use music as a weapon in the war against Capitalism and could become Greil Marcus's next darlings, but if music is just another fetishized commodity in a spectacular society, it will be a while before TUBTHUMPER foments another May '68. Until it does, though, be content to sit back and listen to some enjoyably catchy and thought-provoking tunes. SKU: 1006186

Cool Relax [ECD]
COOL RELAX is an Enhanced CDcontaining both a full audio program as well as multimedia computer files. Personnel: Jon B. (vocals, various instruments); Natie (rap vocals); Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Babyface (various instruments); Reggie Hamilton (guitar, bass); Dean Parks, Tommy Martin (acoustic guitar); David Kopp, Michael Thompson, Eric Jackson (guitar); Bob Robinson (Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards); Tim Kelley (keyboards, drum programming); Jon-John, Dahoud Darien, Keith Andes, Greg Phillinganes, David Foster (keyboards); Nathan East, Reggie Griffin, Dave Elias (bass); Sheila E (percussion); Simon Franglen (programming); Roy Galloway, Atlass, Marc Nelson, Melvin Edmonds, Kevon Edmonds, Toni Estes, Ali Olmo, Khris Kellow (background vocals); 2Pac. Producers include: Jon B., Tim Kelley, Bob Robinson, Jon-John, David Foster. Engineers include: Paul Lani, Tim Kelley, Brian Smith. Jon B. could sing a dog off a meat truck with that smooth set of pipes, and sexy "Come on, make my bed" attitude. But as writer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Jon B. proves he's more than just a pretty voice. COOL RELAX, the well developed follow-up to his debut album BONAFIDE, essays love in all it's familiar forms; sensual, ideal, joyful, hurtful, and above all, necessary. His voice, sweet, sinuous, and seductive, paints a perfect picture over a clean, uncluttered canvas highlighted by a pleasingly funky acoustic guitar and strong, no-bull bass grooves. These "ballads with a backbone" betray his allegiance to the classic soul sounds which he has adroitly woven into his slick, contemporary arrangements. This disc boasts "Pride and Joy," a beautiful Babyface composition (no surprise; Jon B. is clearly a disciple), rapping and production by Tupac Shakur on "Are you still Down", vocal collaborations with K.C. and JoJo from Jodeci; even some percussion by Shiela E. This CD moves neatly from the car to the bouduoir. But don't let his macho mien and carnal come-on fool you.. he's got a soul even your mama could love! SKU: 1017609

Greatest Hits Vol.1 (HIStory)
Includes a 28 page booklet. Personnel includes: Michael Jackson (vocals, percussion); Paul McCartney, Siedah Garrett (vocals); L.T.B. (rap vocals); Vincent Price, Andres McKenzie, Ashley Farrell (spoken vocals); Steve Lukather (guitar, bass); Slash, Eddie Van Halen, Eric Gale, Larry Carlton, Danny Huff (guitar); The Seawind Horns (horns); David Paich (piano, keyboards, synthesizers); John Barnes (piano); Greg Phillinganes (Fender Rhodes piano, keyboards); Steve Porcaro, Bill Wolfer (keyboards, programming); David Foster, Teddy Riley, Glen Ballard (keyboards); Nathan East, Terry Jackson, BobbyWatson (bass); Jeff Porcaro, Ndugu Chancler, John Robinson, Bryan Loren (drums); Paulinho Da Costa (percussion); Kevin Gilbert (programming); James Ingram (background vocals). Producers: Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, Bill Bottrell, Teddy Riley. Engineers include: Bruce Swedien, Humberto Garcia, Matt Forger. Includes liner notes by Elizabeth Taylor, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Steven Spielberg, Michael Jackson. Digitally remastered by Bernie Grundman. Having spent most of the '90s laying low, Michael Jackson spent much of the latter part of 2001 reintroducing himself to the public with a studio album (INVINCIBLE) and deluxe reissues of his Epic Records canon. Also released was GREATEST HITS: HIStory VOL.1, essentially Disc 1 of the similarly named 2-CD 1995 anthology HIStory: PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE BOOK 1. Regardless of how obvious the strategy of flooding the market with past and present material may have been, there's no denying how the contents of the GREATEST HITS package go a long way towards supporting the moniker of the self-proclaimed King Of Pop. Amid rumors of rampant eccentricities, MJ plowed ahead crafting memorable numbers ranging from infectious dance numbers ("Wanna Be Starting' Somethin'," "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough") to heartfelt pleas for peace ("Black Or White", "Heal The World"). Jacko's pure chart dominance found him breaking MTV's glass ceiling of color behind the THRILLER juggernaut and its slew of smashes: - "Billie Jean," "The Girl Is Mine" (with Paul McCartney"), "Thriller," and "Beat It" with its blistering Eddie Van Halen guitar solo-cum-crossover hook. Thankfully, the greatness of this 15-track set supersedes any tabloid innuendo. SKU: 1068102

Welcome To The Beautiful South
The Beautiful South: Sean Welch, Dave Hemingway, David Rotheray, Paul Heaton, David Stead. Additional personnel: Brianna Corrigan (vocals); Gary Barnacle (saxophone, flute); John Thirkle (trumpet, flugelhorn); Peter Thoms (trombone); Pete Wingfield (piano, keyboards); Mel Wesson (keyboards, drum progamming); Martin Ditcham (percussion). Producers: Mike Hedges; John Rowley. Engineers: Ian Grimble; Dave Meeghan. Formed from the ashes of the Housemartins, The Beautiful South became one of England's most successful bands. Released in 1989, their debut, WELCOME TO THE BEAUTIFUL SOUTH, introduces the band's style. Musically, the songs are often deceptively sweet sounding, while lyrically brutally sardonic, even cruel. This combination keeps their records extremely edgy and sometimes uncomfortable, though there's no denying the band's skill. A perfect example of this is "Woman in the Wall," which is musically energetic and triumphal, though its lyrics owe something to Edgar Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart," telling a horrifying story of spousal abuse that results in murder. Other standouts include "Song for Whoever," which starts as a sweet love songbefore the narrator confesses that the song was written for at least 10 different women, "Straight In at 37," which takes a couple of memorable potshots at popsters Simon Le Bon and Paul Young, and the epic "Love Isa," featuring three different vocalists, including Briana Corrigan, who eventually became a full-fledged member of the band. Blues Brothers 2000
Whether or not it reaches the heights of its predecessor is the stuff of water-cooler debates. One thing is for sure, though: this album smokes! Blues fans as well as rock listeners will definitely take a liking to BLUES BROTHERS 2000. There are some fine originals and re-workings here and the tempo never slows. The musicianship throughout is excellent, but doesn't sacrifice spontaneity. This is borne out by "Born In Chicago" (with a wailin' harmonica solo), "The Blues Don't Bother Me" and "Maybe I'm Wrong." WhileThe Blues Brothers Band provides a solid backing, there are also some funky vocals by Dr. John and Aretha Franklin. While many legends participate on this album, legends-to-be also contribute: Johnny Lang, Erykah Badu, and Blues Traveler represent the next generation. All in all, this soundtrack is a fine continuation of the Blues Brothers legacy (and some excellent party music to boot!). SKU: 1001508

Recorded in 1956. Includes liner notes by Art Hilgart, William Simon; and original liner notes by Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-bit technology. This was the 2nd of the Song Books that Ella Fitzgerald recorded for the Verve label in the mid 50s. The brilliant Nelson Riddle hadn't yet signed on, but Verve staff arranger Buddy Bregman was fully up to the task of providing musical settings for Ella's letter-perfect readings of these lyrical and witty gems. Fitzgerald's voice, with it's uncanny bell-like timbre was the perfect vehicle for conveying the sheer beauty of "Spring Is Here," "It Never Entered My Mind," "I Could Write A Book" et al. On the other side, the exuberant "The Lady Is A Tramp" beats Sinatra at his own swingin' game ye |
