Christmas
Personnel: Chris Isaak (vocals, guitar); Stevie Nicks (vocals); Hershel Yatovitz (guitar, background vocals); Rowland Salley (bass guitar, background vocals); Kenny Dale Johnson (drums, background vocals). On this charming holiday album, honey-throated crooner Chris Isaak lends his pipes to a host of Christmas classics, including twangy versions of "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Let It Snow," "The Christmas Song," and "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" (a duet with Stevie Nicks). Few contemporary vocalists have the chops to pull off both "White Christmas" and "Mele Kalikimaka" without danger of setting Bing Crosby spinning in his grave. Isaak--his voice as smooth as eggnog--manages the task, respectfully reinterpreting both songs as vintage country-pop carols. Isaak's originals sound like lost standards themselves. The heart-melting "Brightest Star" sets moving lyrics about a spiritual epiphany to a buttery ballad that would have been right at home on the 1964 Billboard charts, while the raucous country shuffle "HeySanta" is almost worthy of the King (Elvis, that is) himself. Isaak's backing band provides tasteful accompaniment, with some shining slide guitar work by Hershel Yatovitz. SKU: 6577682

Beat Cafe [Digipak]
Personnel: Donovan (vocals); John Chelew (keyboards); Danny Thompson (bass instrument, bass guitar); Jim Keltner (drums, percussion). Recording information: Capitol Studios, Hollywood, California; Pacifica, Los Angeles, CA. BEAT CAFE is UK troubadour Donovan's first adult album of the 21st century (he released a kids' album in 2002), its predecessor being the '96 Rick Rubin-produced acoustic record SUTRAS. Where the latter was strictly a solo affair, full of hushed spirituality, BEATCAFE is a group effort that bears a markedly more sensual, rhythmic tone closer to Donovan's '68 hit "Barabajagal." As the title implies, there's a loose sonic concept at work; undertones of beatnik jazz/blues simmer beneath many of the tunes, most explicitly the title track, which bears echoes of SUNSHINE SUPERMAN's "Bert's Blues." There's an organic, spontaneous feel to the mostly acoustic arrangements. Donovan is accompanied only by famed British folk-rock bassist Danny Thompson (Nick Drake, Pentangle) and American drumming deity Jim Keltner, with occasional keyboards from producer John Chelew. Utilizing such sympathetic musicians in a spare, intimate setting helps make BEAT CAFE an album that lives up to this famed singer/songwriter's legacy. SKU: 6567344

Teaches Of Peaches, The
Additional personnel includes: Bitch LapLap (vocals); Steve Keeping (drums). Peaches, a Canadian expatriate residing in Germany, rocks and shocks by mixing electronic music, punk, and femme fatale attitude. Her second solo release and first full- length album from German label Kitty-Yo, TEACHES OF PEACHES does not hide its overt sexuality. Sporting the artist's midsection on the cover, replete with a pair of pink hot pants, the album seems to posit the next wave of feminist music. With songs such as "Lovertits," "Suck and Let Go," and "Cum Undun," Peaches aligns herself with outspoken artists like The Slits and Kathleen Hanna. Obvious parallels to equally electronic act Le Tigre come to mind while listening to Peaches's rap vocals over Roland 505 beats andsamples. She even whips out a guitar for songs like "Rock Show" and "Sucker." Her instrument of fancy is decidedly the Groovebox, so TEACHES OF PEACHES swells with chunky beats and rock melodies, reminiscent of the electro artists of the 1980s. SKU: 6548939

Emperor Tomato Ketchup
Stereolab: Duncan Brown, Tim Gane, Mary Hansen, Morgane Lhote, Andy Ramsay, Laetitia Sadier (vocals, various instruments). Additional personnel: Sean O'Hagan (string arranger, electric piano, organ, vibraphone); Marcus Holdaway, Sally Herbert, Mandy Drummond, Meg Gates (strings); Ray Dickarty (alto saxophone); John McEntire (vibraphone, guitar, synthesizers, maracas, tambourine). Producers include: Paul Tipler, Duncan Brown, Tim Gane, Mary Hansen, Morgane Lhote. Engineers include: Paul Tipler, John McEntire, Paul Tipler. Recorded at Blackwing Studios, London, England and Idful Music Corp., Chicago, Illinois. Stereolab have always been fascinated with a wide range of textures, which, under their special care, come together in a droney, poppy, spacey sound all their own. In their hands, the monotony of mid-'70s Krautrock, the hi-fi effects of so-called space-age bachelor-pad music (strings, eccentric harmonies, odd studio sounds), and the simplicity of the Velvet Underground's dark pop combine into a mighty monolith that pushes popular music's borders, while making heads sway in teeny-bopperish glee. EMPEROR TOMATO KETCHUP adds a bit of funk to Stereolab's system, making the monolith swing in directions only hinted at previously. "Metronomic Underground," for instance, builds a series of mysterious grooves over its eight-minute span; it's as structured as the title implies, and as smoky as the French cafes Laetitia Sadier's vocals evoke. But the discovery of thegroove is only one of Stereolab's newfound pleasures. The spacing of instruments has taken on a whole new dimension (listen to how the interplay of syncopated guitars, shaker and organ constructs the melody of "Tomorrow Is Already Here"), spreading out the band's formerly vertical sound. And their association with studio savant John McEntire (of Tortoise) has elevated the technological aspects always inherent in their creations. Still, jumpy one-note sambas like the title track remain the group's forte; a telling sign that as much as EMPEROR TOMATO KETCHUP widens Stereolab's horizon, it doesn't lose sight of what makes them unique. Personnel: Jay Kay (vocals); Glenn Nightingale, Gavin Dodds, Simon Bartholomew (guitar); Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra (strings); Mike Smith, Gary Barnacie (flute, saxophone); Wallis Buchanan (didjeridoo); John Thirkell (trumpet); Richard Edwards (trombone); Toby Smith (keyboards); Stuart Zender, Andrew Levy (bass); Nick Van Gelder (drums); Kofi Kari Kari, Maurizio (percussion); D.J. Zire (DJ); Linda Lewis, Vanessa Simon (background vocals). Includes liner notes by Jay Kay. Jamiroquai's debut brings together a utopian worldview, funky '70s R&B influences and the liberated sensibility of England's burgeoning acid-jazz movement. The band, ledby singer Jason "Jay" Kay, rides a funky groove while spreading a message of peace, love and environmental conscientiousness. The results of this meeting of heart and head range from Brazilian-flavored instrumentals like "Music Of The Mind" to to songs like "If I Like It, I Do It," on which yesterday's jazzy soul is spun around on today's hip-hoppy turntables. Jamiroquai also flexes its improvisational muscle on two songs that clock in at over eight minutes. On "Blow Your Mind," Kay scats like George Benson, and the band captures the funky flow of "Summer Madness"-era Kool & The Gang. "Revolution 1993" is a 10-minute vamp on self-determination, featuring an Afro-Caribbean rhythm, Herbie Mann-inspired flute, a raging Moog synthesizer and the darting strings of the Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra. Yesshows
Yes: John Anderson (vocals); Steve Howe (guitar); Rick Wakeman, Patrick Moraz (keyboards); Chris Squire (bass); Alan White (drums). Recorded at Ahoy-Halle, Rotterdam, Netherlands on November 24, 1977; Empire Pool, Wembley, England on October 27, 1978; Festhalle, Frankfurt, Germany on November 18, 1977; Cobo Hall, Detroit, Michigan on August 17, 1976. Digitally remastered by Joe Gastwirt (Ocean View Digital). Recorded at various performances around the world between 1976 and 1978, YESSHOWS features the work of both longtime Yesman Rick Wakeman and his successor Patrick Moraz. Consequently, it's more an overview of the band's mid-period work than a document of a particular tour or performance. The lion's share of the tracks are drawn from GOING FOR THE ONE, arguably the best of Yes' late-'70s recordings, and "Wonderous (sic) Stories," "Parallels" and "Going For the One" all sparkle with the energy and invention that marked said album. The mostimportant aspect of YESSHOWS is its display of the live interaction between the musicians. While Yes was never accused of being a "jam band," their elaborate, sophisticated arrangements require their own kind of musical telepathy between participants. That connection is apparent throughout the epic "Gates of Delirium" from RELAYER. The pleasure Squire, Anderson, Howe and company still get from playing together is especially apparent on their old chestnut "Time and a Word," a simple but very effective ballad. SKU: 1006282

Bend Sinister
The Fall: Brix Smith (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Mark E. Smith (vocals, tapes); Craig Scanlon (acoustic & electric guitars); Simon Rogers (guitar, keyboards); Stephen Hanley (guitar, bass); John S. Woolstencroft (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Paul Hanley (drums). Recorded at Yellow 2, Stockport, England; Abbey Road, London, England; Square One, Bury, England. Originallyreleased in 1986, The Fall's BEND SINISTER was named after a Vladimir Nabokov novel and is credited for starting the career of Stockton, California indie rock stars, Pavement. (A release with a number of the same songs on BEND SINISTER was sold in the United States under the name DOMESDAY PAY-OFF.) The re-release of BEND SINISTER reminds listeners not only of leader Mark E. Smith's seemingly endless stream of vitriol--which has lasted more than 20 years--but also of his influence on the sonic structure of modern British rock & roll. BEND SINISTER runs the gamut of The Fall's wide-ranging sounds--the dry, driving guitar dirge of "R.O.D.," the surprisingly upbeat, keyboard-happy "Shoulder Pads 1#" and "Shoulder Pads #2," and the murky, downtrodden timbre of "Riddler!" David Byrne
Personnel includes: David Byrne (vocals, guitar, lap steel, Clavinet, synthesizer, bells, balafon); Arto Lindsay (guitar); Marcus Rojas (tuba); John Medeski (Farfisa, organ); Bill Ware (vibraphone, marimba); Paul Socolow (acoustic bass, bass, background vocals); Todd Turkisher (drums, roto toms, doumbeck, frame drum, surdo, samples); Valerie Naranjo (talking drum, slit drum, kat, samples); Mark Agostino (temple block); Sue Hadjopoulos, Bashiri Johnson (percussion); Bebel Gilberto, Dolette McDonald (background vocals). Producers: Susan Rogers, David Byrne, Arto Lindsay. Recorded at Clinton Studios, New York, New York in November and December 1993. David Byrne's curiosity knows no bounds. As frontman and principal songwriter for Talking Heads, Byrne's creative outreach encompassed the best aspects of new-wave rock, rootsy funk and exploratory electronics. Together with the Heads and producer Brian Eno, Byrne brought African music and other sounds from around the globe into common usage. And as leader of an all-star Latin big band, he sought to reveal the mystery and majesty of Afro-Cuban music to a wider audience. For DAVID BYRNE, the songwriter distills his pan-cultural focus into the kind of stripped-down musical stylings and enigmatic, quirky narratives that made his work with Talking Heads so fascinating. He speaks more from the heart and less from the head than on previous recordings. Songs like the hard-driving "Crash," the moody "A Self-Made Man" and the dancing "Back In The Box" explore themes of insecurity, self-pride and escapism, while "My Love Is You" is one of the simplest, most tender love songs Byrne has ever penned. American Vol.3 (Solitary Man)
Personnel: Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard (vocals, guitar); Sheryl Crow (vocals, accordion); Tom Petty (vocals, organ); Will Oldham, June Carter Cash (vocals); Norman Blake, Mike Campbell, Larry Perkins, Randy Scruggs, Marty Stuart (guitar); Laura Cash (fiddle); Benmont Tench (piano, harmonium, organ). Recorded at The Cash Cabin Studio, Hendersonville, Tennessee and The Akademie Mathematique Of Philosophical Sound Research, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Johnny Cash. "Solitary Man" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. AMERICAN III was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Johnny Cash went through a lot in the late 1990s and the year 2000: a debilitating nerve disorder put the brakes on his live performances and touring, yet with AMERICAN III: SOLITARY MAN, his spirit and abilities remain undiminished. His voice has taken on a slightly more gentle and reflective quality, and his association with producer Rick Rubin has afforded him the opportunity to choose, and write, songs that are worthy of him. The Neil Diamond '60s pop hit "Solitary Man" is given an acoustic, spare reading, yet one can sense the demons of loneliness and frustration behind Cash's stoic delivery. Nick Cave's "The MercySeat" is an eerie, obsessive litany of the first-person musings and observations of an innocent man's time of execution. The Cash originals, like the proud yet wryly sarcastic "Country Trash" and devotional love song "Before My Time," let some light in. The overall sound of AMERICAN III: SOLITARY MAN is predominantly acoustic and intimate, with guitar, fiddle, piano, organ, and harmonium; guest stars Merle Haggard, Sheryl Crow, Tom Petty, and Norman Blake sound right at home with the Man In Black. April In Paris [Remastered]
Personnel: Count Basie (piano); Marshall Royal, Billy Graham (alto saxophone); FrankFoster, Frank Wess (tenor saxophone); Charlie Fowlkes (baritone saxophone); Joe Newman, Thad Jones, Wendell Cully, Reunald Jones (trumpet); Henry Coker, Benny Powell, Bill Hughes (trombone); Freddie Green (guitar); Ed Jones (bass); Sonny Payne (drums). Recorded at Fine Sound, New York on July 26, 1955 and January 5-6, 1956. It is wonderful albums like this that really benefit from the age of the CD. This was crying out for reissue, and apart from the cardboard sleeve, Verve have treated one of the Count's greatest albums with utmost respect. The lush swing of the Basie band has never sounded happier and the addition of alternate takes is a joy to behold. Listeners will be reminded just how good this band was as they stroll through "Sweety Cakes," add a sheen to Frank Foster's "Shiny Stockings" and rip it apart with Neal Hefti's magnificent "Dinner With Friends." A highly recommended album just bursting with joy. SKU: 1011316
