Time Out [Remastered]
Dave Brubeck Quartet: Dave Brubeck (piano); PaulDesmond (alto saxophone); Eugene Wright (bass); Joe Morello (drums). Recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studios, New York, New York on June 25, July 1 & August 18, 1959. This is part of Columbia/Legacy's Master Sound series. Master Sound releases are 24-karat gold CDs remastered from original, first-generation masters utilizing 20-bit technology involving Sony's "Super Bit Mapping" system. Second only to Jazz Samba by Stan Getz, as the most commercially successful jazz record of all time (it even contained a single for the pop charts, Paul Desmond's magnificent 'Take Five'), Brubeck brilliantly popularized jazz and offered it as a palatable alternative to Bobby Vee. This album sold by the trunkload and made Brubeck a popular star. Those jazz critics who shunned him for becoming too commercial must eat their words, as this is a monumental album of the finest modern jazz. 'Blue Rondo A La Turk' and 'Kathy's Waltz' demonstrate this man's graceful, nonchalant class. SKU: 1006476

Tenor Legacy
Personnel: Benny Golson, Branford Marsalis, James Carter (tenor saxophone); Harold Ashby (saxophone); Geoff Keezer (piano); Dwayne Burno (bass); Joe Farnsworth (drums). Recorded at Sound On Sound, New York, New York on January 29 & 30,1996. Includes liner notes by Benny Golson and W. Royal Stokes. "Body & Soul" was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. An aptly-titled tribute not to an artist or a genre but to an instrument, TENOR LEGACY finds tenor legend Benny Golson and three of the '90s foremost players, Branford Marsalis, James Carter and Harold Ashby, reinterpreting and paying homage to their forebears. Each track is a signature piece of a different tenor, such as Stan Getz's "The Girl from Ipanema," John Coltrane's "My Favorite Things" or Coleman Hawkins' "Body and Soul." Rather than attempt to emulate these geniuses' phrasing, the players state the piece's main theme and then use that as a springboard for their own improvisations and interpretations before returning to the theme at the end. It sounds a teensy bit formulaic in print, perhaps, but Golson, Marsalis, Carter and the underrated Ashby invest the proceedings with enough of their own personalities to make TENOR LEGACY more than a mere curiosity. Diorama
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Silverchair: Daniel Johns (vocals, guitar, piano, harpsichord); Chris Joannou (bass); Ben Gillies (drums). Additional personnel: Michele Rose (pedal steel); Paul Mac (piano); Rob Woolf (Hammond organ); Jim Moginie (keyboards). Recorded at Studios 301 and Mangrove Studios, Australia; Larabee North Studios, U.S.A. Casting aside the shackles that accompanyany band whose first flush of success comes when its members are still teens, Silverchair makes a fresh start on a new label with their fourth album DIORAMA. Teaming up with producer David Bottrill, this Aussie trio abandon their earlier grunge-fueled sound for a more complex and lush approach more Van Dyke Parks (who contributes orchestral arrangements) than Van Halen. Seemingly more settled in his skin, frontman Daniel Johns operates with a rich tone in his voice that cuts to the heart of the soaring "World Upon Your Shoulders" and equally enchanting "The Greatest View" (featuring Midnight Oil's Jim Moginie. Also noteworthy is "Tuna In The Brine," a cut overflowing with intriguing string arrangements. The DIORAMA created by these talented Aussies turns out to be one of delightful nuance. SKU: 1073775

Supa Dupa Fly
Personnel: Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott (vocals); Busta Rhymes (rap vocals); Bill Pettaway (guitar, bass); Lil' Kim, Adina Howard, Da Brat, Aaliyah, Space, Nicole, Timbaland, Ginuwine, Magoo. Recorded at Master Sound Studios, Virginia Beach, Virginia. "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" was nominated for a 1988 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. SUPA DUPA FLY was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. As a member of the R&B group Sista, Missy Elliott went almost unnoticed. It wasn't until years later, when she placed her trademark "hee-hee-hee-hee-ha" lyrics on a Gina Thompson remix that she achieved recognition. Missy's songwriting credits include a number of R&B hits (SWV's "Can We" and Aaliyah's "4 Page Letter"), and her familiar vocal style has been featured on some of the year's hottest remixes, including Li'l Kim's "Not Tonight". Produced by Timbaland (Ginuwine, Aaliyah), SUPA DUPA FLY showcases the studio whiz's unique recording techniques. The tempos here are much slower than on the average hip-hop release, with rhythms akin to dancehall music. Missy doesn't limit herself to rap, either. Many of the songs on SUPA DUPA FLY fall easily into the R&B bag, especially when Missy swaps her hard-core hip-hop lyrics fora smooth laid-back approach. SKU: 5047767

Sings Greatest Palace Music
Personnel includes: Bonnie "Prince" Billy (vocals); Eddie Bayers, Stuart Duncan, Mike Johnson, Bruce Watkins, Mark Fain, Hargus Robbins. The most un-Will Oldham-like of Oldham's releases, SINGS GREATEST PALACE MUSIC finds the singer/songwriter returning to the material he wrote in the 1990s under the monikers Palace Songs, Palace Brothers, and Palace Music. The twist here is two-fold. Oldham sings in the voice he developed recording under the name Bonny "Prince" Billy--an understated, clear tenor, which bears little resemblance to the ragged, throaty vocals he employed with Palace. He also invites a host of high-profile Nashville session men to flesh out the record, making the whole sound decidedly more mainstream than devotees of Oldham's indie aesthetic have come to expect. Those who like the earlier versions of these songs may take issue with the cleaned-up updates and how the steady vocals of Bonnie "Prince" Billy-era Oldham supplant his Palace-era yelp. But there is something undeniably intriguing about hearing "Ohio River Boat Song" with a female backing chorus and weeping, countrified electric guitar, or rich strings and saxophone supplementing "Viva Ultra." The songs themselves, of course, are strong as ever, and manyPalace music devotees will enjoy hearing them recast. The top-notch production and country arrangements should win some new converts to Oldham's back catalogue as well. SKU: 6550301

Veedon Fleece [Remastered]
Personnel includes: Van Morrison (vocals, acoustic guitar); Ralph Walsh, John Tropea (guitar); Nathan Rubin, Terry Adams (strings); Jim Rothenermel (flute, recorder); Jack Shroer (soprano saxophone); Jeff Labes, James Trumbo (keyboards); David Hayes, Joe Macho (bass); Dahaud Shaar, Allen Swartzburg (drums). Engineers: Jim Stern, Dahaud & Jean Shaar, Elvin Campbell. All tracks have been digitally remastered from the original master tapes Following the blues and soul excursions of Morrison's early-'70s albums, VEEDON FLEECE returns tothe dreamy, impressionistic folk-jazz sound of ASTRAL WEEKS. Temporarily forsaking the R&B growl he previously employed, Morrison explores his upper vocal range on several songs here, making good use of his falsetto. Songs range from romantic/spiritual (the transcendent ballad "Come Here My Love") to impenetrably elliptical ("Linden Arden Stole The Highlights"). Throughout, Morrison's heady, improvisational vocal style weaves its way through a mystical, mostly acoustic soundscape that is often low-key but never less than engaging. An underappreciated masterpiece. SKU: 1004108

Their Organic Majesty's Request
Electric Eels include: John Morton, Brian McMahon. This 1998 CD contains exactly the same recordings as 1991's GOD SAYS FUCK YOU and 1989's HAVING A PHILOSOPHICAL INVESTIGATION WITH THE ELECTRIC EELS. Early '70s Cleveland art-school proto-punks the Electric Eels are the missing link between CaptainBeefheart and Pere Ubu, whose Jim Jones and Anton Fier were former Eels. Formed in 1972, the Electric Eels never released any albums in the band's three-year lifetime, but their deliberately provocative, invariably strange--singer Dave E occasionally played a lawn mower onstage--and occasionally violent live shows were justifiably legendary. Combining Dave E's strangled screams and lead guitarist John Morton's heavy riffs with the more free-jazz-inspired and noisier work of rhythm guitarist Brian McMahon and keyboardist Jones, the Electric Eels were where Albert Ayler, Alice Cooper and Yoko Ono intersected. Highlights here include the posthumous "Agitated," and the wilder "Cyclotron" and "Bunnies." SKU: 4116790

Reunion, The [PA]
Personnel includes: Capone, Noreaga, Nas, Foxy Brown, Algado & Shoballotti, Troy Outlaw, Goldfingaz, Havoc, Prodigy, Musaliny-N-M.A.Z.E. Producers include: Rush, L.E.S., The Alchemist, DJ Premier, EZ Elpee. Capone-N-Noreaga generated a strong buzz within hip-hop's underground circuit with their first album THE WAR REPORT, until, with an inevitability that seems to accompany the genre, Capone was incarcerated and promotion of the album ceased. However, Noreaga continued with hiscareer, and had sizeable hits with his next two solo albums. Now, with Capone out of jail, and Noreaga ready to pick up where the two left off, their second album THE REUNION further establishes them as one of hip-hop's most street credible duos. Songs such as the roughneck anthem "Bang Bang" and the Nas-accompanied "Be EZ" best illustrate CNN's trademark style, while on "Phone Time," Capone and Noreaga creatively portray one of their jail phone conversations. Produced by DJ Premier, Alchemist, EZ Elpee, L.E.S., and Havoc among others, this album represents hip-hop at its most exceptional. SKU: 1087309

Southern Harmony And Musical Companion, The
Full title: The Southern Harmony And Musical Companion. The CD-Extra version of THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION contains all the tracks from the original album along with two bonus tracks. The screensavers, a link to the Black Crowes' website and full-length videos of "Remedy" and "Sometimes Salvation" are accessible using a CD-ROM drive. The audio portion will play on any standard audio CD player. This CD is also available as part of the 5-CD SHO' NUFF box set. The Black Crowes: Chris Robinson (vocals, harmonica, percussion); Rich Robinson, Marc Ford (guitar); Ed Harsch (piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Johnny Colt (bass); Steve Gorman (drums). Additional personnel: Chris Trujillo (congas); Barbara, Taj (background vocals). Recorded at Southern Tracks, Atlanta, Georgia. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Given the sub-Stones boogie of their debut, SHAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER, THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION came as a quietly accomplished body of work, apparently way beyond their relative youth and experience. The EXILE ON MAIN STREET references were still intact, but the predominant swagger and sashay had been abandoned in favour of a soulful interpretation of their roots, rather than a parody of their influences. Chris Robinson's Jagger pastiche was replaced by a more gutsy, honest strut, while brother Rich plays with an aplomb and spirit that struck darkly at the heart of their songs. A very grown-up record indeed. SKU: 6488871

Both Sides Now
Personnel includes: Joni Mitchell (vocals, guitar); Vince Mendoza (arranger, conductor); Gordon Jenkins (arranger); Wayne Shorter (soprano & tenor saxophones); Mark Isham (trumpet); Herbie Hancock (piano); Chuck Berghofer (bass); Peter Erskine (drums). Recorded at Air Studios, United Kingdom. BOTH SIDES NOW won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop VocalAlbum. "Both Sides Now" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying A Vocalist. The song was also nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. "A Case Of You" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accopanying A Vocalist. Joni Mitchell is no stranger to jazz, as evidenced by her work with the legendary Charles Mingus toward the end of his life. On her 20th album, Mitchell forgoes the outer reaches of Mingus's jazz in favor of interpreting more traditional American vocal pop. By interpreting material normally associated with Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, the Canadian iconoclast travels down the same road as her old pal Linda Ronstadt. Unlike Ronstadt's mid-'80s three-album foray with Nelson Riddle into the great American standards songbook, Mitchell approaches this project on a more personal and conceptual level, as she traces the arc of a modern romantic relationship. Backed by the billowy sounds of the London Symphony Orchestra, Mitchell's burnished vocals provide a perfect match as she goes from discovering love ("At Last") to see it start to crumble ("Sometimes I'm Happy") and ultimately collapse ("Stormy Weather"). Jazz greats Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock add some bite to the lush orchestrations. Mitchell weaves a personal touch into the conceptual framework by including a radically altered version of her own "A Case of You" and "Both Sides Now." A haven for pop-vocals fans whose definition of the genre begins and ends with Sinatra. SKU: 1086713

This Desert Life
Counting Crows: Adam Duritz (vocals, piano); David Bryson (acoustic, electric, 12-string & slide guitars); Dan Vickrey (acoustic & electric guitars, sitar, background vocals); Matt Malley (12-string guitar, bass, background vocals); Ben Mize (drums, percussion, background vocals). Additional personnel: David Immergluck (pedal steel & electric guitars, bass); Joel Derouin, Eve Butler (violin); Matt Funes (viola); Larry Corbett (cello); Dennis Herring (keyboards); David Lowery, Chris Seerfried, Gary DeRosa, Cinjun Tate, Charles Gillingham (background vocals). Recorded in Hollywood, California in 1998. Looking beyond the puerile zeitgest that cluttered the charts in 1999, Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritzcontinued to be the epitome of the sensitive lyricist, using songs as a canvas for what was going on in his life. Like its predecessors, THIS DESERT LIFE contains an abundance of musical riches. Camper Van Beethoven/Throwing Muses producer Dennis Herring shares the helm with Cracker's David Lowery. The duo vigorously supports the Crows' homespun leanings while at the same time tapping into the same vein of Americana from which many insurgent country bands draw inspiration. Duritz is a denizen of the subconscious who delves into the intertwining relationship of memories and dreams amidst the chugging pace of "Mrs. Potter's Lullaby." On the lushly bittersweet "All My Friends," he looks back at his life in the hopes of finding a future mate. Counting Crows offset the dark mood of THIS DESERT LIFE with a few less severe-sounding numbers. The bizarre imagery of "St. Robinson in His Cadillac Dream," is undercut by chiming mandolin and sweeping organ. "Hanginaround" is akin to "Hey Jude" with a hip-hop beat. Also included is the hidden track "Kid Things," a folksy rocker reminiscent of early-'70s Rod Stewart. SKU: 1025047

Tango In The Night
Fleetwood Mac: Lindsay Buckingham (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Christine McVie (vocals, piano); Stevie Nicks (vocals); John McVie (bass); Mick Fleetwood (drums, percussion). Recorded at The Slope, Bel Air, California in 1986. Not having the mega-multi-million salesof RUMOURS allows this record greater credibility--the listener has the choice of discovering it. A worthy album, late in their career, many million miles away from the monster Peter Green created. It showed a much happier and cleaner Fleetwood Mac, having put much of their emotional baggage in the cupboard. Some of their strongest material is found here, Lindsey Buckingham's ambitious "Big Love," Christine's beautiful "Everywhere" and close second "Little Lies." Reappraising this record gives you a further chance to work out whether a rude word is repeated throughout "Family Man". SKU: 1003086

Nico [ECD]
NICO is an Enhanced CD companion to the home video LETTERS FROM A PORCUPINE, and is playable on either a CD-ROM drive or a standard CD player. A portion of the proceeds from both NICO and LETTERS FROM A PORCUPINE go to benefit MAP (the Musicians Assistance Program). Blind Melon: Shannon Hoon (vocals, acoustic guitar); Christopher Thorn (acoustic & lap steel guitars, guitar, banjo, Mellotron, bell, tambourine); Rogers Stevens (acoustic & electric guitars, Hammond B-3 organ, congas, shakers, background vocals); Brad Smith (flute, acoustic bass, bass, dumbek, congas); Glen Graham (Mellotron, drums, hi-hat, congas, dumbek, percussion). Producers include: Blind Melon, Mike Napolitano, Mike Kelsey, Andy Wallace. Engineers include: Blind Melon, John Burton. Named for the late Shannon Hoon's infant daughter, NICO is a collection of outtakes, previously-unreleased originals and a pair of covers. Blind Melon was regularly pegged as a happy-go-lucky, hippie throwback act, but this collection exposes a band that bristled with creativity. Among the discoveries here that show Blind Melonto be more than a back-up band for the Bee Girl are "Glitch," a hypnotic percussive song that evokes the Master Musicians Of Jajouka. Blind Melon's creative spark was surely a restless one. "Letters From A Porcupine" is a musical message left by singer Hoon on guitarist Christopher Thorn's answering machine. An impromptu session in Hoon's hotel room toward the end of a 19-month tour produced "Life Ain't So Shitty." The band's version of John Lennon's protest song "John Sinclair" shows off a major influence; a Steppenwolf cover ("The Pusher") provides some eerie foreshadowing. SKU: 1005517

Girls Girls Girls Vol.1
GIRLS! GIRLS! GIRLS! is a collection mastered from the original Demon label master tapes and compiled by Elvis Costello himself. Includes track-by-track comments by Costello. Producers include: Nick Lowe, Colin Fairley, Roger Bechirian, T-Bone Burnett, Declan MacManus. The oddity of GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS is that the CD and the now-deleted cassette and vinyl versions of this collection are markedly different in song selection and sequencing. Selected by Elvis Costello himself as a farewell to Columbia Records, this two-disc set covers the years from MY AIM IS TRUEthrough BLOOD AND CHOCOLATE in non-chronological order. Going strictly by Costello's personal taste rather than chart placement, the collection ignores big hits like "Everyday I Write the Book" and "The Only Flame in Town." Indeed, "Pills and Soap" and "Shipbuilding" are the only tracks from PUNCH THE CLOCK, and 1984's GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD--"our worst album," as Costello famously called it on the Rykodisc reissue--is ignored completely. The selection, representing all of Costello's other albums and styles well, is excellent, and the songs are simply magnificent. There are no rarities, but none are needed. SKU: 4132578

College Dropout, The [PA]
Personnel: Kanye West, CLC, Consequence, Jay-Z, J. Ivy, Talib Kweli, Twista, Ludacris, Mos Def, Freeway (rap vocals); Jamie Foxx (spoken vocals); The Harlem Boys Choir, Syleena Johnson (background vocals). Producers: Kanye West, Brian Miller, Miri Ben-Ari. For most artists who are discovered behind the mixing boards, making the transfer from producer to MC proves a daunting task. Fortunately for Kanye West, his verbal skills more than rise to the challenge of his consistently superior beats. A sprawling concept record that tackles issues of everyday life with wisecracking humor and unexpected honesty, THE COLLEGE DROPOUT confirms West's status as one of hip-hop'smost refreshing voices. The leadoff single, "Through the Wire," perfectly exemplifies West's distinct vision. Recorded while his jaws were still wired shut after a near-fatal car accident, West hilariously reflects upon his predicament over a sped-up Chaka Khan sample. Other songs address potentially somber topics--ghetto life ("We Don't Care"), religion ("Jesus Walks"), and family turmoil ("Family Business")--yet somehow retain a truly hopeful spirit. Although THE COLLEGE DROPOUT features top-notch cameos from Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, Freeway, Jay-Z, Ludacris, and Twista, it's clearly West's show. SKU: 6554024

Blue Boy
Personnel includes: Ron Sexsmith (vocals, guitar, piano); Steve Earle (guitar, bouzouki); Ray Kennedy (guitar, harmonium, chimes); Don Kerr (cello, drums, percussion, background vocals); Jim Hoke (saxophone); Kami Lyle (trumpet); Brad Jones (organ, bass); Patrick Earle (tambourine, loops) Anna Egge (background vocals). Recorded at Room And Board Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. While its an indictment of the shameful state of the music industry that a highly respected songwriter like Ron Sexsmith is unable to maintain acareer on a major label, its a testament to Sexsmith's artistic vision that his eventuation into the indie world doesn't alter his creativity a whit. If anything, BLUE BOY is a marked progression for Sexsmith. Though it's produced by Steve Earle and Ray Kennedy, there's no evidence of Sexsmith "going country" here. Earle and Kennedy are perfectly attuned to Sexsmith's post-Beatles pop classicism. They merely highlight in a fresh, interesting way, as on the infectious opener "This Song," where Sexsmith's reedy voice is brilliantly offset by a soul-powered horn section. Or "Not Too Big," which adds a funky touch to the proceedings. Longtime fans needn't fear; their heroes fragile, transcendently melodic gift remains completely intact here, he's just picked up a couple of new steps along his journey. SKU: 1059919

Songs The Lord Taught Us
The Cramps: Lux Interior (vocals); Ivy Rorschach, Bryan Gregory (guitar); Nick Knox (drums). Additional personnel: Booker C (Alex Chilton) (organ). Principally recorded at Sam Phillips Recording Studio, Memphis, Tennessee. Digitally remastered by Mike Reese (A&M Studios,Hollywood, California). An early (1980) effort by the simultaneously minimalist and over-the-top retro-shlockabilly kings, sympathetically produced by their fellow devotee of Southern culture on the skids Alex Chilton. Poison Ivy's guitar work here is her usual mix of trashcan chording and distorted surf riffs, and singer (?) Lux Interior is in particularly good faux-Elvis form on such instant classics of self-aggrandizement as "The Mad Daddy" and "I'm Cramped." The band, as is their wont, also throws in some interesting covers here, including the Rock and Roll Trio's "Tear It Up" and a version of '60s grunge pioneers the Sonics' "Strychnine" that's so primitive it makes the original sound like Yes by comparison. In a word--wow. SKU: 1015490

Abraxas (Limited Edition) [Remastered]
Available on Mini Disc on Columbia (30130). NOTES: Also availablein a 3-pack with SANTANA (1st LP) and SANTANA (3rd LP). Santana: Carlos Santana (vocals, guitar); Gregg Rolie (vocals, keyboards); Dave Brown (bass); Mike Shrieve (drums); Jose Areas (timbales, congas); Mike Carabello (congas). Additional personnel: Rico Reyes (vocals, percussion); Alberto Gianquinto (piano). Reissue producer: Bob Irwin. Recorded at Wally Heider Studio, San Francisco and Pacific Recording, San Mateo, California, and live at The Royal Albert Hall, London, England on April 18, 1970. Includes liner notes by Ben Fong-Torres. Santana's initial trio of albums still sound incredibly alive and exciting. ABRAXAS is the best of the three as it imbues the Latin fusion of their debut with smooth edges. The relaxed opening elegantly slips into "Black Magic Woman," the finest ever interpretation of a Peter Green song. "Se A Cabo," "El Nicoya" and the memorable "Oye Como Va" give us the quota of Latin rock. The album's star turn is the beautifully erotic "Samba Pa Ti," which features a superb guitar solo that oozes the sexuality blatantly depicted by the Mati cover illustration. SKU: 1031073

Think Tank (Limited Edition)
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Blur: Damon Albarn, Alex James, Dave Rowntree. Additional personnel includes: James Dring (programming). Producers: Blur, Ben Hillier, Norman Cook, William Orbit. Over six heralded records, the most recognizable feature of Blur's sound is that they really don't have a sound. In a musical world where artists are all too often pigeonholed, Blur remains the ultimate indescribable, unpredictable band. With the possible exception of the first two, no Blur album has really borne the mark of its predecessor, and seventh offering THINK TANK (the first since the departure of Graham Coxon) is no exception. Practically every track goes off in its own engaging direction, starting with the darkly hypnotic and mystical "Ambulance" which abruptly closes on a distorted synth riff and crashing into the sweetest song on the album, the melodically simple and reflective "Out Of Time." The one constant on a Blur record is the knowledge that there will be at least a couple of perfecly-etched pop songs and on this go-around, they're even clearly, cheekily marked "Good Song" and "Sweet Song." Along the way, there's also the spacey danceable screaming of "Crazy Beat," the old-school punk of "We've Got A File On You," the world-beat/Manchester recall of "On The Way To The Club," and the ambient chant of "Caravan." In all, THINK TANK is another gloriously, sui generis album from Blur, a record that revels in its own jagged edges. SKU: 1082695

Echo
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: Tom Petty (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Mike Campbell (vocals, guitar, bass); Benmont Tench (piano, electric pianos, organ, Chamberlin, Clavinet); Howie Epstein (bass, background vocals). Additional personnel: Scott Thurston (acoustic & electric guitars); Steve Ferrone (drums); Lenny Castro (percussion). Producers: Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, Rick Rubin. Engineers: Mike Campbell, Richard Dodd, Dave Schiffman. ECHO was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "Room At The Top" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. In his 24th year of recording, Tom Petty shows you can age gracefully in a medium known for its rampant ageism. ECHO finds Petty putting together a veiled confessional that refers indirectly to a recent separation from his wife. As always, Heartbreakers Mike Campbell (who helped out with production), Howie Epstein, and Ben Tench provide a solid musical bed for songs largely populated by female protagonists. "Free Girl Now" sounds an insistent message of liberation, "Lonesome" finds Petty using a forlorn twang to bid a heartfelt farewell to a lover who then goes on the road in search of adventure in "Swingin'" as harmonica and guitar steadily wail away. In dealing with his interpersonal roadblocks, Petty remains a sturdy optimist. He picks himself up off the floor amidst a flurry of Campbell's sitar-flavored leads during "Won't Last Long," and bounces back from taking it on the chin on "Billy The Kid," which Tench peppers with swirling Clavinet andorgan. Elsewhere, the native Floridian and his Heartbreakers go from impersonating the Byrds on "This One's For Me" to conjuring up pure rock & roll alchemy on the rollicking "About To Give Out" before wrapping things up with the bittersweet "One More Day, One More Night."
