Blondes Have More Fun [Remastered]
Personnel: Rod Stewart (vocals); Fred Tackett (acoustic guitar); Jim Cregan, Gary Grainger, Billy Peek (guitar); Gary Horbig (flute); Tom Scott, Phil Kenzie, Steve Madaio (horns); Duane Hitchings (keyboards); Nicky Hopkins (piano); Philip Chen (bass); Carmine Appice (drums, background vocals); Roger Bethelmy (drums); Paulinho da Costa (percussion); Mike Finnigan, Max Gormenthal (background vocals). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Thebreathier, rootsier classics of FOOT LOOSE AND FANCY FREE now firmly in place in the increasingly legendary Stewart canon, BLONDES HAVE MORE FUN saw the peroxided one continuing to change with the times. From the opening staccato bass and fluffy keyboard riffs of the album's classic "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy," the disco age had arrived, though, thankfully, it left Stewart's unique blend of charm and anger (the accusatory "Is That All The Thanks I Get?") intact, still his scratchy, sexy self against the album's backdrop of unabashedly commercial material (this was his best seller to date). Not that rock was ever off the agenda, as stated unarguably by the rollicking, rebellious I-IV-V rant of the title track. "Last Summer" bears all the earmarks of mellow FM rock (notably the flanged guitars and "jazzy" flute). The honest, close-up vocal take and deft fingerstyle guitar work of "The Best Days Of My Life" combine with slick songcraft and grandiose string arrangements to epitomize the commercial transition in Stewart's career that was marked by BLONDES HAVE MORE FUN. Sound Of Music By Pizzicato 5, The
THE SOUND OF MUSIC BY PIZZICATO FIVE compiles material from Japanese records dating back to 1993's BOSSA NOVA 2001. Pizzicato Five includes: Maki Nomiya (vocals); Konishi Yasuharu, Gemi Taylor. Beautifully packaged ina minimalistic white Digipak overlaid with a clear plastic band cryptically announcing "Music is organized by sound," 1995's THE SOUND OF MUSIC looks considerably more elegant and mysterious than the amusing retro-kitsch graphics of Pizzicato Five's 1994 U.S. debut, MADE IN USA. Like its predecessor, THE SOUND OF MUSIC is a compilation, gathering almost equally from two Japan-only releases, BOSSA NOVA 2001 and OVERDOSE. But where MADE IN USA hedged its bets by focusing on the Japanese duo's most straightforward English-language tracks, THE SOUND OF MUSIC kicks off with the bizarre BYE BYE BIRDIE homage "We Love Pizzicato Five" and dives headfirst into giddily hyperkinetic pop-culture-in-a-Cuisinart romps like "Groovy Is My Name" and "If I Were a Groupie." Quotes from Bacharach, Barry White, disco, the Beatles, and Kraftwerk enliven Yasuharu Konishi's slyly ironic tunes, and singer Maki Nomiya makes them her own. This album is a delight. SKU: 1006329

Series Of Sneaks, A
Spoon: Britt Daniel, Jim Eno, Joshua Zarbo. Spoon's Britt Daniels ("The Biggest Ears In Rock 'n' Roll") has drawn a lot of comparisons to Jonathan Richman. This is probably due to that "I-need-to-spend-some-quality-time-with-my-otolaryngologist" sound of stuffed sinuses they both share more than anything else. Otherwise, Spoon's second longplayer has more of that jagged sorta-garage, sorta-punk, sorta-just-plain-old-cool sound that veersaway from standard song form, but not away from hooks. Did somebody say "hooks?" Take the gorgeous, melancholy melody of the album's closer, "Advance Cassette." Or better yet, "Metal Detektor", the catchiest song ever written about bank robbery. Infectious, addictive, irresistible; it's the reason you spend all your money on music. SKU: 1068774

One Voice
Personnel: Barbra Streisand, Barry Gibb (vocals); Dan Sawyer (acoustic & electric guitars); Randy Kerber (piano, keyboards); Jim Cox, Randy Waldman, Nyle Steiner (synthesizer); John Pierce (electric & Moog bass); Chad Wackerman (drums); Michael Fisher (percussion, sound effects); Richard Marx (background vocals). ONE VOICE documents Barbra Streisand's 1986 performance at her Malibu home. Given in order to raise money and awareness for a variety of causes ("I could no longer remain silent," she says, in the face of starvation, threats to the environment, nuclear weapons), this was her first full-length concert in some 20 years. Ever the consummate performer, her unwavering musicality once again shines through, and no one knows better how to deliver an emotional wallop. Recent hits, such as "Evergreen" and "Somewhere," co-mingle gracefully with old Streisand standbys, such as "People" and "Happy Days Are Here Again," all executed with the utmost conviction and passion. The most poignant moment during the performance is her dedication of "Over The Rainbow" to the memory of Judy Garland, followed by a rendering ofthe song so loving as to make Garland proud. Streisand finishes with a rather introspective version of "America The Beautiful," cautiously offering hope for the future. It's easy to be cynical about her reasons for this concert (especially with tickets running 2500 dollars a head), but one cannot be cynical about her protean artistic gifts. And besides, what's so funny about peace, love, and understanding? SKU: 1017103

Night Song
All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. Though the official line on alto saxophonist Arthur Blythe is that his later work doesn't match the '70s recordings which made his name, one listen to 1998's NIGHT SONG proves that this couldn't be further from the truth. Drawing from the same sort of world music influences as trumpeter Jon Hassell--but without the inertia which dogs most of Hassell's recordings--Blythe is that rarity, a saxophonist whose free-jazz roots show proudly without interfering too much with the calmer direction he's pursuing now. There's a South American vibe to most of NIGHTSONG, most especially on the title track, two versions of which bookend the other 10 songs. Even songs with America-centric titles like "The Sorrows of Sonny Liston" are set to hypnotic beats. Blythe plays with both skill and passion throughout; he spends the album dancing on the fine line between Ornette Coleman and the Buena Vista Social Club. SKU: 5045895

Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Co. 1970-1973
Full performer name: Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Co. Was this the first legitimate US all-synth band? To all intents and purposes, yes. Mother Mallard were the Anglo doppelgangers of Tangerine Dream, but where the Dream first dipped themselves in a primer of Pink Floyd, Mother Mallard were reflected in a post-modernist mirror whose silver coating alchemically merged the minimalists (Steve Reich) with the laboratory process music of the rank academia. Mother Mallard's compositions weren't about deep space and investigations of gelatinous environments--theirbrand of music was informed by classical works as much as it was by rock. "Ceres Motion" weaves a complex series of sequencer patterns in a powerful hypnotic mantra that suggests machines locked in a tight embrace; the atmospheric "Cloudscape for Peggy" works a series of repetitive drones to the same exhilarating effect. Mother Mallard's players--composers David Borden, Steve Drews and Linda Fisher--managed to bring academia to bear upon "populist" electronic music as well as commercialism, relieving the dry cadences of the former without resorting to the crass sensibilities of the latter. The result was one of US electronica's least known, yet most critically important, historical chapters. SKU: 1050077

Arrival [Remastered]
ABBA: Bjorn Ulvaeus (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars); Benny Andersson (vocals, accordion, piano, keyboards, synthesizer, marimba, chimes); Anni Frid Lyngstad, Agnetha Faltskog (vocals). Additional personnel: Janne Schaffer, Lasse Wellander, Anders Glenmark (electric guitar); Lasse Carlsson (saxophone); Rutger Gunnarson (bass); Ola Brunkert, Roger Palm (drums);Malando Gassama (percussion). Recorded at Glen and Stocksund Studios, Stockholm, Sweden in 1976. Includes reissue liner notes by Carl Magnus Palm. Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Jon Astley. Widely considered the Swedish foursome's first classic album--and historically important as the first to use the now-famous mirror-B logo--1976's ARRIVAL contains three huge hit singles, the dramatic "Money Money Money," the downcast "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and quite possibly the band's finest four minutes, the absolutely perfect pop classic "Dancing Queen," a combination of Spectorian grandeur, McCartneyesque melody and the indescribable vocals of Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The rest of ABBA's fourth album is strikingly consistent and accomplished, opening with the sly, bouncy "When I Kissed the Teacher" and closing with the atmospheric title track, making room in between for the three excellent singles and five other substantial pop tunes. Although three LPs and a greatest-hits compilation preceded it, ARRIVAL is aptly titled, as this album announces the band's move beyond bubblegum. SKU: 6500278

Every Picture Tells A Story
Cassette available on Mercury (822 385). NOTES: Personnel includes: Rod Stewart (vocals, acoustic guitar); Ron Wood (guitar, pedal steel guitar, bass); Martell Brandy, Martin Quittenton (acoustic guitar); Sam Mitchell (slide guitar); Dick Powell (violin); PeteSears (piano); Ian McLagan (organ); Danny Thompson, Andy Pyle (bass); Mick Waller (drums); Madeline Bell, Mateus Rose, John Baldry (background vocals). All tracks have been digitally remastered. Rod Stewart's third solo album brought the singer long-awaited commercial success. Its combination of strong, original songs and plum cover versions was finely judged as the artist paid tribute to mentors and declared his own craft. Members of Stewart's regular group, the Faces, provide intuitive support without the sense of compromise apparent on their own recordings. The singer's voice was rarely better; his interpretation of the Temptations' '(I Know I'm) Losing You' brought new dimensions to a Tamla/Motown classic. The highlight is, inevitably, 'Maggie May', one of the great pop anthems, but the remaining selections, such as 'Mandolin Wind' and Tim Hardin's beautiful 'Reason To Believe' contain a similar sense of purpose. Black Ivory Soul
Personnel includes: Angelique Kidjo, Dave Matthews (vocals); Romero Lumbado (acoustic guitar); Joao Mota (guitar); Dominic Kanza (nylon string guitar); Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson (drums); Brenda White-King, Cindy Mizelle, Dennis Collins, Curtis King (background vocals). Recorded at Sear Sound, New York, New York. BLACK IVORY SOUL was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best World Music Album. For the Bill Laswell-produced BLACK IVORY SOUL, Angelique Kidjo's first album since 1998's OREMI, the world music diva explores the link between the Brazilian city of Bahia and her home country of Benin. Befitting her multi-cultural background, Kidjo worked with an impressive range of talent including Brazilians Carlinhos Brown and Vinicius Cantaria, Roots drummer Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson and soul singer Cindy Mizelle. The result is an album's worth of music that's very much percussion-driven and peppered with plenty of irresistible grooves ranging from the life affirming "Tumba," (which is the name for congas in Benin), to the airy, acoustic guitar-dappled "Ominira" (Yoruba for freedom). Among the few English-language songs are the funky title track with its Fela-lite backbeat and the infectious "Iwoya," seemingly a stab at college radio airplay by way of guest Dave Matthews's vocal contribution. Kidjo also continues her penchant for unusual covers--this time out, Serge Gainsbourg's "Ces Petits Riens"is given a delicate rendering and Gilberto Gil's "Refavela" benefits from a sassy, percussion-soaked interpretation sung in the African dialect of Fon. BLACK IVORY SOUL is a glimpse at what the future of global pop looks like entering the 21st Century. SKU: 1070782

Lodger [Remastered]
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals, guitar, piano, Chamberlain, synthesizer); Tony Visconti (guitar, mandolin, background vocals); Adrian Belew (guitar, mandolin); Brian Eno (guitar, trumpet, horn, piano, synthesizer, soundeffects); Carlos Alomar (guitar); Simon House (mandolin, violin); Stan (saxophone); Sean Mays (piano); Roger Powell (synthesizer); George Murray (bass); Dennis Davis (percussion). Recorded at Mountain Studios, Montreaux, Switzerland. Digitally remastered by Peter Mew and Nigel Reeve (1999, Abbey Road Studios, London, England). LODGER (1979) was third in Bowie's Berlin trilogy, his collaboration with legendary producer/experimentalist Brian Eno, which began with HEROES and LOW (both released in 1977). While those dark records were heavy on alien-sounding instrumentals, LODGER had none, and even contained songs that seemed relatively straightforward. Considered inaccessible at the time, LODGER now sounds like a classic, transitional Bowie album, if only for its rich spirit of experimentation. From the Middle Eastern strains of "Yassassin" to the bizarre wordplay of "African Night Flight," LODGER feels like a journey through strange lands. Songs like "Boys Keep Swinging" (later covered by ex-Bangle Susanna Hoffs) and "DJ" have the structure of traditional rock songs, but the odd textures, rough edges and dissonant elements make them into something richer and stranger. "Look Back in Anger," with fierce guitar playing by Adrian Belew, became a staple of Bowie's live concerts for years to come. "Red Money" is Bowie's adaptation of Iggy Pop's decadent, futuristic "Sister Midnight" from THE IDIOT. The anthemic "Red Sails" (co-written with Eno) has a majestic sense of forward motion, its glorious crescendo and fadeout providing the record's most spine-tingling moments. SKU: 1025362

See How We Are (Remastered & Expanded)
X: Exene Cervenka (vocals); John Doe (vocals, bass); Tony Gilkyson (guitar); D.J. Bonebrake (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Dave Alvin (guitar, bass); Benmont Tench (organ, synthesizer). Producer: Alvin Clark. Reissue producers: Gary Stuart, John Doe. Recorded at Rumbo Studios, Tarzana, California. Originally released on Elektra (60492). Includes liner notes by Kristine McKenna. All tracks have been digitally remastered. After recording their previous album, AIN'T LOVE GRAND, original guitarist Billy Zoom departed. Large-scale success had eluded the band and that release had been specifically designed to reach a wider audience. That success didn't materialize and SEE HOW WE ARE, two years later, was a sort of return to form. The rootsier underpinnings of Exene Cervenka and John Doe's songs were now given wide berth. (This was also the era of their offshoot group, The Knitters, who explored the resonance and beauty of old chestnuts and their contemporary lineage, exclusively.) Ex-Blaster Dave Alvin stepped in as guitarist briefly before Tony Gilkyson joined permanently. Though he appears in a group photo in the booklet, Alvin departed prior to the making of this album. However, one of his stellar numbers, "The Fourth Of July," makes its debut here. That song, along with the title song and "When It Rains" show that X's roots go far deeper than that of most of their (by-then defunct) contemporaries from the late seventies punk scene. SKU: 1072149

Tales From The Brothers Gibb (A History In Song)
Full title: Tales from the Brothers Gibb: A History in Song 1967-1990. A comprehensive box set composed of A-sides from the Bee Gees' singles, non LP sides, and formerly mono-only tunes in stereo for the first time. There's also some material from the 1973 unreleased album A KICK IN THE HEAD IS WORTH EIGHT IN THE PANTS, some solo material from 1970 and the mid-80's, and 4 tracks of recent Warner Brothers material. The Bee Gees: Maurice Gibb (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass, percussion); Barry Gibb (vocals, guitar); Robin Gibb (vocals). Additional personnel includes: Alan Kendall, Tim Cansfield (guitar); Vic Martin, Gary Moberley (keyboards); George Perry (bass); Michael Murphy (drums); Phyllis St. James (percussion, backround vocals); Tampa Murphy, Linda Harmon (backround vocals). Producers include: Bee Gees, Robert Stigwood, Arif Mardin, Karl Richardson, Albhy Galuten. Compilation producer: Barry Levinson. Recorded between 1967 and 1990. Includes linernotes by David Wild. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot. It's difficult to quibble with the song selection on this generous four-disc box. All the phases of the trio's career are covered, and nearly all the highlights of each phase are presented. TALES FROM THE BROTHERS GIBB includes material from the Bee Gees' earliest days, as teenage, pre-Beatles pop purveyors ("Spicks and Specks") as well as their glorious, Beatles-influenced Britpop period ("First of May," "And the Sun Will Shine"). The group's often-overlooked early-to-mid-'70s work is also admirably documented here ("Charade," "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart"), and of course, their white-polyester-suited disco kings phase ("Stayin' Alive," "Night Fever"). Admittedly, all but the hardiest fan's attention may wander during the fourth disc, but the group's post-disco material merely finds them practicing their seamless popcraft amid the production values of the day, just as they've always done. Such latter-day tracks as "One" yield a pleasure that is particular to the evanescent but undeniable magic of the Brothers Gibb. This thoughtful collection is recommended to anyone interested in delving deeply into the catalog of this chameleon-like, endlessly inventive group. SKU: 5064195

Fabulous Johnny Cash, The/Songs Of Our Soil
Personnel includes: Johnny Cash (vocals, guitar); Luther Perkins (guitar); Marshall Grant (bass). Includes liner notes by Billy Altman. Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder and Seth Foster (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). At the end of the '50s, Johnny Cash departed maverick independent label Sun Records, where he'd started his career. Lured by the promise of artistic freedom (Sun's Sam Phillips supposedly wanted him to stay on the same raw country/rockabilly track), Cash switched over to Columbia. Fans feared that his departure from the spartan Sun sound would be accompanied by commercialization and overproducton, but they needn't have worried. On Cash's 1959 Columbia debut THE FABULOUS JOHNNY CASH, the only real addition to the minimalistic sound of Cash's Tennessee Two is a male backing vocal group, and even this can be satisfyingly contextualized by considering Cash's gospel roots. The songs include some of Cash's finest; the timeless torch ballad "I Still Miss Someone," the anti-violence "Don't Take Your Guns to Town," andthe poignant farm-community narrative "Pickin' Time." The six previously unreleased bonus tracks included on this long-overdue reissue stack up favorably alongside any of those on the original release, further sweetening the pot. SKU: 1070823

Complete Studio Recordings, The [Remastered]
THE COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS contains:THE DOORS (1967)/STRANGE DAYS (1967)/WAITING FOR THE SUN (1968)/THE SOFT PARADE (1969)/MORRISON HOTEL (1970)/L.A. WOMAN (1971) and ESSENTIAL RARITIES (1997) which includes previously unreleased, live and demo tracks. Includes a 60-page booklet with liner notes by Dave DiMartino. The Doors: Jim Morrison (vocals); Bobby Krieger (guitar); Ray Manzarek (piano organ, keyboards, marimba); John Densmore (drums, percussion). Additional personnel includes: Marc Benno (guitar); G. Puglese (harmonica); Curtis Amy (saxophone); George Bohanan (trombone); Harvey Brooks, Doug Lubahn, Ray Neopolitan, Lonnie Mack, Jerry Scheff (bass). Producers: Paul A. Rothchild, Bruce Botnick, The Doors. All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24-bit technology. The Doors issued just six studio albums during their phenomenal (yet extremely turbulent) four-year run, yet the band's popularity has increased dramatically since singer Jim Morrison's mysterious death in 1971. And although the Doors have been the subject of one box set already, the 1999 seven-disc set COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS is definitive. All six of the band's albums are included, in crystal-clear digitally remastered sound. All come in cardboard replicas of the original records that go so far as to duplicate the records' dust cover sleeves. And as a bonus, an extra disc entitled ESSENTIAL RARITIES is included, which features the best uncommon material from the Doors' 1997 four-disc box set, THE DOORS BOX SET, as well as a booklet filled with pictures, essays, and lyrics. Few would debate that some of the finest rock ever recorded is here--"Light My Fire," "Break on Through," "Peace Frog," "Waiting for the Sun," "Touch Me," "Roadhouse Blues," "Riders on the Storm," the list is endless. If you're a longtime Doors fan looking to replace your records or a newcomer wanting to acquire all of the band's official albums in one shot, COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS is a must-have. SKU: 1030469

King Of The Tenors
Personnel: Ben Webster (tenor saxophone); Benny Carter (alto saxophone); Harry "Sweets" Edison (trumpet); Oscar Peterson (piano); Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis (guitar); Ray Brown (bass); J.C. Heard, Alvin Stoller (drums). Recorded in New York, New York on May 21, 1953 and Los Angeles, California on December 8, 1953. Originally released on Norgran (MGN 1001) as THE CONSUMMATE ARTISTRY OF BEN WEBSTER. Includes liner notes by Michael Ullman. By 1953, Ben Webster had carved out his own niche in the world of jazz (and certainly in the world of saxophone). Early in his career, the tenor man was under the spell of Coleman Hawkins and some critics considered him a mere copy. However, by the '50s, Webster had formed his own idiom. Still showing his roots,Webster nonetheless began to play with more flexible phrasing and a unique breathy tone. Uptempo numbers were intense yet controlled, and his ballad work (probably his greatest asset) was lyrical and more emotional than that of any of his contemporaries. On KING OF THE TENORS we hear Webster in two different versions of the Oscar Peterson Quartet. The first setting features only one horn (Webster), the second session features legends Harry "Sweets" Edison (trumpet) and Benny Carter (alto sax) in addition to Webster. This reissue includes a previously unreleased version of "Poutin" as well as superb renditions of standard tunes "Tenderly," "Don't Get Around Any More," and the lovely Irish traditional "Danny Boy." Europe 1972 (Live)
Disc 2 contains an untitled hidden track at the end of the disc. The Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Ron "Pig Pen" McKernan (vocals, organ, harmonica); Phil Lesh (vocals, bass); Donna Godchaux (vocals); Keith Godchaux (piano); Bill Kreutzmann (drums). Engineers: Bob Matthews, Betty Cantor, The Grateful Dead. Recorded live in Europe by Alembic Sound using a 16-track tape recorder. When the band returned to the United States, it rebuilt its entire stage at Alembic Studios for the purpose of overdubbing. Each song was played back over the same equipment that it was originally performed on, recreating the original ambience, while the band added additional instrumental andvocal tracks. Originally a three-LP set, this live document of the band at their largest (an octet if you count non-performing lyricist/official member Robert Hunter) is a well-recorded portrait of one of the Dead's finest eras. The Chick Corea-channeled-through-Floyd Cramer piano of Keith Godchaux had already begun to take the Dead to new |
