Tonight The Stars Revolt
Powerman 5000: Spider One (vocals); Adam 12, M.33 (guitar); Dorian 27 (bass); Al 3 (drums). Additional personnel: Rob Zombie, DJ Lethal, Ginger Fish. Producers: Powerman 5000, Sylvia Massy, Ulrich Wild. POWERMAN 5000 is an agreeably cartoonish metal/rap hybrid, distinguished by sci-fi and superhero imagery and lead singer Spider One's hilariously over-the-top declamations. Any similarity to White Zombie is totally intentional;in fact, Rob Zombie himself shows up on the aptly named "Blast Off to Nowhere." Other highlights include "When Worlds Collide" and "Nobody's Real," which have rather canny big chorus sing-along hooks, and don't miss a cover of The Cars' "Good Times Roll" that totally out-sinisters the original. Bottom line: exactly the kind of album Beavis and Butt-Head would have killed for. SKU: 4133948

Plastic Fang
Personnel includes: Jon Spencer (vocals, guitar, piano, Theremin); Judah Bauer (guitar, background vocals); Dr. John (guitar); Steve Jordan (piano, organ, bass, drums, percussion, background vocals); Bernie Worrell (organ, Moog synthesizer); Russell Simins (drums, percussion). Coming almost four years after the previous Jon Spencer Blues Explosion release, PLASTIC FANG sounds like a retrenchment. Unlike the hip-hop and electronica-influenced ACME, PLASTIC FANG is a return to the Howlin' Wolf-via-early-Rolling- Stones blues-rock-noise of the early Blues Explosion. What's different this time out is that Spencer and crew enlisted an outside producer: Steve Jordan, former drummer for David Letterman's house band, New York session musician, and a key member of Keith Richards' '80s solo project the X-Pensive Winos. A Jon Spencer record will never sound slick, but Jordan brings an undeniable commercial element to PLASTIC FANG. The sound is big and glossy, with Spencer's usual growling vocals and blues-skronk guitar set against an atypically upfront backing of Russell Simins' pummeling drums and the intensely rhythmic style of second guitarist Judah Bauer. Spencer's songs are more direct than before, with little of the gutter-sleaze persona he worked so hard to perfect in his early days. But for the fact that they actually rock, the opening "Sweet and Sour" and the almost ballad-like "Mean Heart" wouldn't sound out of place on a '90s-era Rolling Stones album. The peculiar New Orleans-style side trip of "Hold On" finds Spencer collaborating with Dr. John and Bernie Worrell, further proofthat PLASTIC FANG is Jon Spencer's bid for the mainstream, and not a bad one at that. Come Find Yourself
Fun Lovin' Criminals: Huey (vocals, guitar); Fast, Steve. Recorded at Steve Rosenthal's Magic Shop, New York, New York from April 25 to May 20, 1995. COME FIND YOURSELF, the debut record from this New York alternative-rap trio, is equally a product of the post-Beck and post-"Paul Revere" worlds. Alluding in their musical blueprint to the "Loser" folkie, Criminals Huey, Fast and Steve sculpt tracks driven by live drums and guitars, yet whose smooth, rock-ist samples are the songs' true calling cards--"Bombin' The L" spotlights a refrain from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird," and "Crime And Punishment" is built on "Sunshine Of Your Love." Lyrically, instead of stringing together pop-culture-weary non-sequiturs, FLC adopt the jokey, faux-gangster posturing of the Beastie Boys' classic LICENSE TO ILL--leading to quasi-classic lines like "La-di-da-di/Free John Gotti," the chorus to "King Of New York." The result is a head-nodder of an album that'll make anylistener question whether to laugh along or call the cops--and that's precisely the point. SKU: 1005279

Very Best Of Dr. John, The
Producers include: Allen Toussaint, Harold Battiste. Includes liner notes by Jeff Hannush. This is a single disc distillation from Rhino's MOS' SCOCIOUS two-CD anthology. The 16 songs span over 20 years of music by New Orleans' own Mac Rebennack, aka Dr. John. He had more than a dozen years of experience under his belt when he "emerged" as Dr. John in the late '60s. His colorful, festooned stage shows carried him well into the '70s, after which he turned out some stellar solo piano works (DR. JOHN PLAYS MAC REBENNACK, THE BRIGHTEST SMILE IN TOWN), fine New Orleans funk (TELEVISION) and even some standards (IN A SENTIMENTAL MOOD). This anthology neatly encapsulates everything that makes Dr.John one of the preeminent exponents of New Orleans music. For a deeper journey, the aforementioned double disc set is recommended, as it also includes some of his earliest work which date from the '50s, when he was still a teenager yet already a force to be reckoned with. Best Of Joan Baez, The
Producers: David Kershenbaum, Joan Baez, Henry Lewy. Compilation producer: David Kershenbaum. With the advent of the '70s, Joan Baez's music began to change. Her passionate commitment to human rights never wavered, but her romance with country music cooled, and message oriented, political songs began to interest her less. Instead, Baez began taking a decidedly more pop route. She began to sing more about personal experiences, her own songs beginning to reflect love, loss, and other issues surrounding the human condition. A rich and eclectic collection of 12 songs recorded during Baez's tenure with A&M Records, THE BEST OF showcases the folk singer in this period of artistic transition, displaying her ability to adapt to the changes wrought by a new decade. On "Please Come to Boston" she croons sadly, "I said no. Would you come home please..." However, a more self-evidently optimistic tone isreflected in the Spanish tinged ballad, "Gracias A La Vida (Here's to Life)," and her famous rendition of Robbie Robertson's "The Night They Drove Ol' Dixie Down" is more upbeat and danceable than The Band's original version. Crosby/Nash
Personnel: David Crosby; Graham Nash; Dean Parks, James Raymond, Jeff Pevar, Leland Sklar, Russ Kunkel. Additional personnel: James Taylor . Producers: Nathaniel Kunkel; Russ Kunkel; Graham Nash; David Crosby. Recording information: 01/12/2004 - 02/12/2004. In the late 1990s, after surviving serious health problems, David Crosby experienced something of an artistic rebirth by teaming with his long-lost son, keyboardist/songwriter James Raymond, in the group CPR. Here Crosby dusts off his duo with CSN bandmate Graham Nash, while still benefiting from Raymond's considerable talents. Considering all the aesthetic missteps of latter-day CSN, it's a welcome surprise to find that CROSBY # NASH is one of the classiest, most substantive projects the two old cohorts have collaborated on since 1982's DAYLIGHT AGAIN. The fact that there are two full discs' worth of finely crafted songs on offer here emphasizes that Crosby and Nash are truly at the top of their game. With Raymond making equally impressive songwritingcontributions, the compositions bear a musical sophistication that brings to mind '70s Paul Simon, and a lyrical spark that recalls Crosby and Nash's glory days. Even the production is top-notch, with spare, tasteful arrangements that never set a foot wrong, artfully framing the thoughtful, elegant folk/rock/pop sound that the icons in question mastered long ago. New Latinaires Vol.1, The
This is the first volume in a new series of Afro-Cuban/electronica fusion perpetrated by the fine folks at San Francisco's Ubiquity label. Why shouldn't the melting pot that is the U.S. produce music just as pan-ethnic and cross-fertilized? Jungle and drum-and-bass managed to absorb all manners of jazz and R&B influences into their heady stews. New electronic producers are discovering the same richness and broad textures ingrooves of Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, and Latin descent. NEW LATINAIRES is hot stuff. Shifting lower-keyboard eddies ride tropical breezes through Jazzanova's "Atabaque," the music's basslines seemingly carved from rubberized mercury. Squirts of electronics spin through tympani-and-timbale battlefields on Izuru Utsumi's "Zum-Zum." Capsule 150 brings Jobim and Cal Tjader into eight arms of rhythmic nirvana via the tumbling cymbals, yawning wah-wah, and space-age lounge air bursts entwined in "Octopus." Electronica continues to spawn myriad, wonderful hybrids, and NEW LATINAIRES 1 is the prime place to set your lobes a-twirlin'. SKU: 5065378

Tomorrow Come Today
Boys Sets Fire: Chad Istvan (vocals, guitar); Rob Avery (vocals, bass); Nathan Gray (vocals); Josh Latshaw (guitar); Matt Krupanski (drums). Recorded at Ocean Studios, Burbank, California; Cello Studios, Hollywood, California; Mama Joe's Recording, North Hollywood, California. As has been demonstrated with the rise of nu-metal, anyone can plug in, churn out distorted riffs, and grouse about being bored and angst-ridden. However, Boysetsfire ignores all the minor qualms and instead uses TOMORROW COME TODAY to focus on the bigger, sociopolitical issues of the world. Recorded in three months and produced by former Ugly Kid Joe guitarist Dave Fortman, these songs are crisp in execution and infused with an above-average degree of melodicism not normally found in an aggro rock album. Singer Nathan Gray leads this Delaware quintet in tackling subjects ranging from the erosion ofcivil rights by way of the Patriot Act ("Release the Dogs") to the proliferation of corporate interests more interested in profit than in the well-being of consumers ("Dying on Principle"). Other taboo topics approached with a healthy dose of crunching guitar and pounding rhythms are organized religion (the epic "Bathory's Sainthood"), spousal abuse (a borderline pop-punk "White Wedding Dress"), and America's foreign policy in a post-9/11 world (the harmonious "Foundations to Burn"). Limited editions of TOMORROW COME TODAY include a bonus DVD containing over an hour's worth of live footage. SKU: 1081708

Life Love And The Blues
Personnel: Etta James (vocals); Josh Sklair (guitar, dobro); Leo Nocentelli, Bobby Murray (guitar); Jimmy "Z" (saxophone, harmonica); Lee Thornburg (trumpet, trombone); Tom Poole (trumpet); Dave Mathews (keyboards); Mike Finnigan (Hammond B-3 organ); Sametto James (bass); Donto James (drums, percussion). Recorded at Fort Athens Studio, Riverside, California. Includes liner notes by Bob Merlis & Etta James. LIFE, LOVE & THE BLUES was nominated for a 1999 Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Etta James' fine self-produced LIFE, LOVE & THE BLUES touts itself as a straight blues album, the one Etta says she always wanted to record. This isn't entirely accurate, since the smart choice of tunes here includes Al Green's "Here I Am (Come And Take Me)" and Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues." But why quibble with a legend, especially since she delivers the goods with such class and professionalism? By 1998, her voice had lost some of its upper purity but hardly any of its flexibility and force. She's not riding any past glory as she steps forthrightly into Albert King's "Born Under A Bad Sign" like she owns it, as well as modern blues classics like Willie Dixon's "Spoonful" and "Hoochie Coochie Man (Gal)." Speaking of ownership, Etta co-wrote the title song- a smoldering statement of purpose cut with some fine slide acoustic work courtesy of her ace back-up guys, The Roots Band. SKU: 1004951

Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle, The (Highlights)
The Sex Pistols: Johnny Rotten (vocals); Steve Jones (guitar); Sid Vicious, Glen Matlock (bass); PaulCook (drums). Additional personnel: Malcolm McLaren, Ronnie Biggs, Tenpole Tudor (vocals). Producers include: Matrixbest Productions, Paul Cook, Steve Jones. Originally released in 1979 as the soundtrack to a documentary that marked the rocket rise and flaming crash of the Sex Pistols, THE GREAT ROCK & ROLL SWINDLE was really Pistols' manager Malcolm McLaren's cinematic (and vinyl) potshot at the music industry he despised. Engaged in vicious legal battles with Johnny Rotten, Warner Brothers Records and Virgin Records, McLaren fought back in the only way he knew how -- by raising hell and documenting the whole bloody mess. By the time THE GREAT ROCK & ROLL SWINDLE was released, the punk-era soap opera had ended: Sid Vicious was dead and Rotten had formed Public Image Limited. Probably best known for Vicious' tortured deconstruction of "My Way," the 21-track compilation features seven tracks by the Pistols -- even though Rotten only appears in the film via archival footage-as well as songs by Tenpole Tudor, Ronnie Biggs and others. Curiosities abound, including a French version of "Anarchy in the U.K," drunken rugby songs, and the fey, McLaren- crooned "You Need Hands." Both ragged and riveting, THE GREAT ROCK & ROLL SWINDLE is a fascinating, screaming document of the tattered remains of one of the most explosive moments in rock history. SKU: 1006891

Additional personnel includes: Peter Gabriel (vocals, keyboards);Julie Murphy, Screaming Orphans, Pina Kollars, Robert Plant (vocals); Nawazish Ali Khan (violin); Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh, Ciaran Tourish (fiddle); Rosie Wetters (cello); Myrdhin (Celtic Harp); Nigel Eaton (hurdy-gurdy); Wired Strings (strings); Liam O'Flynn (Uilleann pipes); John Fortis (bass); Sunil Kaylan (tabla); Pete Lockett, Hossam Ramzy (percussion). Producers: Simon Emmerson, James McNally, Martin Russell. Recorded at Redchurch Recordings and Sonic Innovation, London, England; Real World Studios, Whiltshire, England. VOLUME 3: FURTHER IN TIME was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best World Music Album. On its third outing, the multi-cultural sonic collective known as the Afro-Celt Sound System continues to flex its eclectic musical muscles in a variety of areas. As on past recordings, the predominant sound is a mix of world music, dance/electronica, pop, and a kind of modern art-rock. The opening track "North" typifies this approach, as tribal chanting and African-sounding rhythms collide with swirling bagpipes in a very danceable and digestible manner. There are more traditional pop-oriented moments on further in, and a couple of those are illuminated by some high-profile guest vocalists who bring a lot of themselves to their contributions. Peter Gabriel pops up on "When You're Falling," which wouldn't have sounded out of place on one of his '80s recordings, and Robert Plant sings on "Life Begins Again," creating a moody soundscape that's not a million miles from Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir." Despite these star-powered tracks, however, it's the collective's unique vision and fresh sound that truly defines FURTHER IN. SKU: 1056986

Peter Gabriel Vol.2 [SACD]
Personnel: Peter Gabriel (vocals, piano, organ, synthesizer); Sidney McGinnis (acoustic, electric & steel guitars, mandolin, background vocals); Robert Fripp (acoustic & electric guitars, programming); George Marge (recorder); Tony Capello (saxophone); Bayete, Roy Bittan (keyboards); Tony Levin (bass, background vocals); Joey Marotta (drums, background vocals). Engineers include: Steve Short, Ed Sprigg, Michael Getlin. Recorded at Relight Studios, Hilvarenbreek, Holland. All tracks have been digitally remastered. When Peter Gabriel left the comforting group identity of Genesis after almost ten years, it might've been expected that he would want to re-assert his individuality. However, titling his first three albums PETER GABRIEL was bound to confuse at least a few fans into buying the same record twice (not a bad marketing strategy when you think about it). PETERGABRIEL the (second) album allowed Peter Gabriel (the singer) to stretch a bit more than his Bob Ezrin-produced debut. Under the watchful eye of producer/fellow art-rock refugee Robert Fripp, Gabriel stretched his musical palette from the raucous "On The Air" to the fragile "Flotsam and Jetsam" to the everything-but-the-kitchen-sink "D.I.Y." Not as stark as PETER GABRIEL (III) or as funked-up as SECURITY, PETER GABRIEL (II) shows Gabriel ably charting the idiosyncratic nonformula that he follows to this day. SKU: 1082951

Bayou Country [Remastered]
Creedence Clearwater Revival: John Fogerty (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Tom Fogerty (guitar); Stu Cook (bass); Doug Clifford (drums). Includes liner notes by Joel Selvin. Digitally remastered utilizing the 20-Bit K2 Super Coding System. Released in early 1969, the second album by guitarist/vocalist John Fogerty's Californian quartet is perhaps the definitive example of the group's swampy brew of rock, R&B, and blues. The key song on BAYOU COUNTRY is "Proud Mary," a rock milestone that still sounds just as fresh and exciting as it did when it first boomed out of AM radios decades ago. Although Creedence indulges in a few extended jams on tracks like "Keep On Chooglin" and "Graveyard Train," they forsake the gratuitous soloing favoredby many of their San Francisco contemporaries in favor of fleshing out rhythmic, rock-solid grooves. From Fogerty's formidable bluesman's growl on "Born On The Bayou" to the explosive version of Little Richard's "Good Golly Miss Molly," BAYOU COUNTRY is what rootsy rock & roll is all about, and it's one of the best American rock albums of the '60s. Willie Nelson And Family Live [Remastered]
This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a browser. Personnel: Willie Nelson (vocals, guitar); Jody Payne (guitar); Mickey Raphael (harmonica); Bobbie Nelson (piano); Chris Ethridge, Bee Spears (bass); Paul English, Rex Ludwick (drums). Recorded live at Harrah's, Lake Tahoe, Nevada in 1978. Includes liner notes by Rick Petreycik. Recorded at Lake Tahoe in 1978, WILLIE AND FAMILY LIVE effectively documents the laid-back, freewheeling approach Nelson and his band take to live performances. Unlike many country acts that strive to play the same set with the same note-for-note precision every night, Nelson's band prefers to live on the edge, wringing surprises out of every note and beat. This "free jam" aesthetic explains why Nelson is popular among Grateful Dead fans, and aficionados of this musical approach will be most likely to enjoy WILLIE AND FAMILY LIVE. The album, which clocks in at over ninety minutes, contains some instances of frustrating off-handedness (Nelson occasionally sings indifferently) but also many moments of full-throttle energy, including blistering versions of "Whiskey River," "Under the Double Eagle," and the Bob Wills classic "Stay a Little Longer," as well as fine takes on the ballads "If You Could Touch Her At All" and "Till I Gain Control Again." Nelson, his pianist sister Bobbie, and harmonica player Mickey Raphael areall great soloists, and each is given plenty of opportunities to stretch out and show off some hot licks. SKU: 1085083

Take A Break
Me First And The Gimmie Gimmes: Spike (vocals); Jake Jackson (guitar, ukulele); Joey Cape (guitar); Fat Mike (bass); Dave (drums). Recorded at Motor Studios, San Francisco, California. Includes liner notes by Christopher Dodge. TAKE A BREAK drags punk rock's premier cover band back from their respective day jobs with NOFX, Lagwagon, and No Use For A Name for another trawl through the pop charts of yesteryear. Highlights include an "Isn't She Lovely" that's a collision of Gary Glitter and Stevie Wonder and a version of Lionel Richie's "Hello" that will only seem scary if you haven't heard their take on Aretha's "Natural Woman." All the above are delivered with the energy and genre-mixing panache you'd expect from theseseasoned veterans, with enough variety and respect for the originals to avoid what could have been a one-dimensional exercise in punkifying old hits. Cases in point are their take on the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There," which manages to incorporate snippets of The Cars' "You're Just What I Needed," and their "Anarchy in the UK"-laced interpretation of Vanessa Williams' wedding-dance special 'Save the Best For Last," both of which should be heard to be believed.
