Bonfire
BONFIRE contains rare live tracks, alternate takes, and previously unreleased material as well as a digitally remastered version of the album BACK IN BLACK. Extras include an extensive booklet, a poster, keychain, window sticker, guitar pick and a temporary tattoo. AC/DC: Bon Scott, Brian Johnson (vocals); Angus Young, Malcolm Young (guitar); Cliff Williams (bass); Phil Rudd (drums). Producers include: Harry Vanda, George Young, Robert John "Mutt" Lange. Includes liner notes by Murray Engleheart. When Bon Scott died at the age of 33, many thought this was the end of AC/DC. The band rebounded by recruiting vocalist Brian Johnson (a Scott favorite) and releasing their best-selling album ever, BACK IN BLACK. BONFIRE is a five-disc tribute to the pugnacious and raspy-voiced Scott, overflowing with the bare-fisted riffs and ribald lyrics that were the trademark of his edition of the band. Recorded live at New York's Atlantic Studios, Disc 1 was originally a promotional-only release that's been bootlegged countless times over the years. All thriller, no filler, this recording overflows with plenty of classics ranging from the band's cheeky tribute to venereal disease ("The Clap") to the tale of an over-sexed Rubenesque female fan ("Whole Lotta Rosie.") Discs Two and Three are an expanded version of the soundtrack to the 1980 concert film "Let There Be Rock." Recorded before a French audience, AC/DC's in-your-face performance transcended any cultural differences and the audience often sang along despite language barriers. Entitled VOLTS, Disc Four consists of work-in-process studio recordings of material such as "Touch Too Much" and "Get It Hot" with different lyrics than the finished versions. The inclusion of the slow blues of "Ride On" shows another side to AC/DC often lost among the lascivious offerings of "Beatin' Around The Bush" and "She's GotBalls." A re-mastered version of BACK IN BLACK completes this set marking the end of one era and the beginning of another. SKU: 1086811

Apollo (Atmospheres & Soundtracks)
Personnel: Brian Eno (keyboards, synthesizers, programming); Daniel Lanois, Roger Eno. Includes liner notes by Brian Eno. An invitation to score Al Reinert's film of the Apollo Mission's lunar landing provided Eno with the "opportunity to explore the feelings of space travel." APOLLO is "one small stepa" for Eno, here working both within and beyond the conceptual confines of his Ambient series. The disc's dozen gorgeous, evocative miniatures see Eno's first collaborative work with producer/guitarist Daniel Lanois--a collaborator who would prove central to many of Eno's subsequent projects--and with his own brother, pianist Roger Eno. APOLLO contains some of Eno's most carefully crafted melodies, wrought impressionistically in limpid, quicksilver synth and gilded with Lanois's liquid guitar lines. "Matta" and "Under Stars II" imagine the wonders of weightlessness and zero-gravity drift. Lanois's "Silver Morning" views the dawn's smoldering glow from above, while the golden rays of "Deep Blue Day" strain to break at the planet's horizon. "An Ending (Ascent)" watches tearfully from the heavens as a tiny blue Earth falls away into the cradling arms of space; "Always Returning" welcomes the sight of terra firma's green expanses; and the twinkling "Stars"casts its eyes heavenward with a new sense of respect and homesick longing. An ambient masterpiece. SKU: 1002753

Dancing On The Edge
Personnel: Roy Buchanan (vocals, guitar); Delbert McClinton (vocals); Donald Kinsey (guitar); Stan Szelest (keyboards); Larry Exum (bass); Morris Jennings (drums). Producers: Roy Buchanan, Bruce Iglauer, Dick Shurman. Recorded at Streeterville Studios, Chicago, Illinois. The wild and wooly, no-holds-barred version of Henry Mancini's "Peter Gunn" that opens this album reminds that Roy Buchanan is not your average blues-rock axeslinger. With a dazzling arsenal of chops and a tone that can, alternately, slice through granite and float like cumulous clouds, Buchanan's standing as a masterful technician seems to grow with each successive release, and DANCING ON THE EDGE is no exception. The six instrumental and five vocal tracks here (featuring Texas R&B institution Delbert McClinton), though steeped in traditional blues, push at the limitations of the genre. For example, there's the ear-shattering jump country of "Petal to the Metal" and the expansive surf jam "Jungle Gym." DANCING rocks harder than most of Buch's releases, with the guitarist's sizzling six-stringery (check out the barrelhouse acid boogie of "Whiplash") backed by a crack studio band and McClinton'sraw singing (check out "You Can't Judge a Book By the Cover"). Buchanan fans and worshippers of the blues guitar won't be disappointed by this one. SKU: 1012143

Experience Hendrix (The Best Of Jimi Hendrix)
Personnel: Jimi Hendrix (vocals, guitar, flute, kazoo, piano, harpsichord, glockenspiel, bass); Dave Mason (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Noel Redding (bass, background vocals); Billy Cox (bass); Mitch Mitchell (drums, percussion); Graham Nash (feet). Producers include: Chas Chandler, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Kramer, Mitch Mitchell, John Jansen. Compilation producer: Janie Hendrix, John McDermott. Engineers: Dave Siddle, Eddie Kramer, Mike Ross. This collection represents the essential items of the Jimi Hendrix catalog. Each selection illustrates Hendrix's uniqueness as both guitarist and composer. In the '60s, he virtually defined rock guitar, remaking history in his own image. His mix of blues, psychedelia and Dylanesque folk-rock made him a rock & roll icon. It's in the surreal balladry of "The WindCries Mary." It's in the archetypal hard-rock cadences of "Purple Haze." It's in everything this electric guitar prodigy laid his talented hands on. Those unfamiliar with Hendrix's legacy are fortunate to have EXPERIENCE HENDRIX as a guide. SKU: 5015960

Birds Of Fire
Mahavishnu Orchestra: Jerry Goodman (electric violin); Jan Hammer (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Mini-Moog synthesizer); John McLaughlin (acoustic guitar, electric 6 & 12-string guitars); Rick Laird (acoustic & electric basses); Billy Cobham (drums, gong). Recorded at Trident Studios, London, England and CBS Studios, New York, New York in 1972. Includes liner notes by Bill Milkowski. All tracks are digitally remastered. Guitarist John McLaughlin was in on the birth of jazz-rock fusion, having played with both Miles Davis and Tony Williams' Lifetime in the early '70s. McLaughlin applied what he'd learned from these artists to his own pioneering fusion band, the Mahavishnu Orchestra. This second effort is the Orchestra's definitive recording. The tempestuous mix of jazz, rock, and Eastern influences is at its height here, and all of the players in this notoriously ego-plagued group challenge themselves--and each other--to push the envelope. The themes, generally stated by McLaughlin and searing electricviolinist Jerry Goodman, sound regal, unfolding in an elegant, magisterial way. Drummer Billy Cobham (another Miles alumnus) provides pounding polyrhythms over which McLaughlin and Goodman mix it up with keyboardist Jan Hammer. Hammer's synthesizer solos blazed a new trail for the synthesizer as a lead instrument, particularly in his guitar-like use of pitch-bend. The pastoral, acoustic strains of "Thousand Island Park" provide a brief respite before the listener is hurled back into the firestorm. "Hope" could be a distant cousin of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir," while the closing "Resolution" bears similarities to RED-era King Crimson, making it plain that BIRDS OF FIRE takes both sides of the jazz-rock sound seriously. Great Performances
Released in conjunction with a home video release. Includes "My Happiness," which Elvis performed as a teenager for his mother's birthday. Tracks 1-10, 12 and 13 are mono, the rest are stereo. Unlike other performers of the early rock era, Elvis is as closely associated with his many television and film appearances as he is with his records. To capitalize on the wealth of rare and interesting video footage of the King, in 1990 Buena Vista released a two-video set called Elvis: The Great Performances. This included many of Presley's early television appearances, some later stage and studio performances, home moviefootage, and film documenting major events in his life, including his Army induction and marriage. At the same time, RCA released an accompanying CD called THE GREAT PERFORMANCES, which includes most of the harder-to-find performances seen on the videos. The album begins with the 1953 acetate of "My Happiness" that Presley, then an unknown, cut at Sun Studios as a gift to his mother (it later earned Elvis an audition at Sun). Also included are 1956 performances on the Dorsey Brothers' show, the Steve Allen Show, the Milton Berle Show, and Ed Sullivan's Talk of the Town. Most of the later tracks are studio recordings. THE GREAT PERFORMANCES is a nice collection and a good companion to the videos, although subsequent RCA releases have made its rarities more readily available than they were in 1990. SKU: 1002887

Super Hits
Producers: Desmond Child, Don Fleming, Peter Collins, Andy Wallace. Recorded between 1988 & 1994. The '90s saw a plethora of Alice Cooper "best of" compilations, nearly all chronicling his work for MCA and Epic that was recorded during the late '80s to the early '90s. 1998's SUPER HITS was no different; it was comprised of 10 tracks from the Epic releases TRASH (1989), HEY STOOPID (1991), and THE LAST TEMPTATION (1994). While the last of these is reminiscent of classic Cooper (haunting vocals, thought-provoking lyrics, and heavy music), his first two Epic releases have a sound influenced by the then-thriving pop-metal scene, which included bands like Motley Crue and Poison. SUPER HITS does a good jobof collecting the highlights of these albums. The best-known track remains his 1989 top-10 hit "Poison," while other standouts include "Hey Stoopid," "Love's a Loaded Gun," "Trash," "Sideshow," "You're My Temptation," and "Might As Well Be on Mars." But the best track on SUPER HITS is undoubtedly the oft-overlooked 1994 collaboration between Alice and Soundgarden's Chris Cornell, "Stolen Prayer." While it may not be a definitive collection of Alice Cooper hits, SUPER HITS is recommended to fans of later-day Alice. SKU: 1038601

Intoxicated Man
INTOXICATED MAN is an album of cover versions of Serge Gainsbourg songs. Personnel includes: Mick Harvey, Anita Lane (vocals); Warren Ellis (violin); James Cruickshank. Producers: Mick Harvey, Victor Van Vugt, Tony Cohen. Longtime Birthday Party and Bad Seeds gloom merchant Mick Harvey teams up with Anita Lane for an entire album's worth ofSerge Gainsbourg covers, and the results are surprisingly pleasant. INTOXICATED MAN boasts 16 English-language renditions of Gainsbourg's late-'60s repertoire, including "Bonnie & Clyde," "Lemon Incest," and "69 Erotic Year," as well as the title cut. Harvey's treatment of the French pop star's material is reverent and completely devoid of the cheeky irony that one might expect from such an endeavor, while Anita Lane's airy and diffident vocals add a sensuality to the recordings that Brigitte Bardot herself would envy. Furthermore, Harvey's translations make Gainsbourg's wonderfully witty lyrics accessible to non-French speakers. SKU: 4125566

Goats Head Soup
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano); Keith Richards, Mick Taylor (guitar, bass, backgroundvocals); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel: Jim Horn (flute, alto saxophone); Bobby Keys (tenor & baritone saxophones); Chuck Finley (trumpet); Ian Stewart, Nicky Hopkins (piano); Billy Preston (keyboards); Pascal, Rebop, Jimmy Miller (percussion). Recorded at Dynamic Sound Studios, Kingston, Jamaica. Digitally remastered by Bob Ludwig (Gateway Mastering Studios). Following the enormous success of STICKY FINGERS and EXILE ON MAIN STREET, GOATS HEAD SOUP found the Rolling Stones jetting down to Jamaica in 1973 and tweaking their rebellious image with a bit of voodoo imagery. Kicking things off with "Dancing With Mr. D.," the Stones picked up the thread of "Sympathy For The Devil" and gilded their already hedonistic reputation with some Satanic allusions. References to Beezelbub aside, SOUP offered up some of the Stones' more heartfelt ballads including "Angie," "Winter" and "Coming Down Again." Of course, being known as "The World's Greatest Rock 'N' Roll Band" means a number of songs more than back up this moniker. Among them are "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)," propelled by Mick Taylor's wah-wah pedal and Billy Preston's electric piano, and the twang and slide guitar of "Silver Train." With an abundance of cheeky attitude despite a slew of slow songs, the Stones close GOATS HEAD SOUP with a backhanded tribute to groupies called "Star Star." SKU: 1006151

Believe
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Yolanda Adams, Karen Clark-Sheard. Producers include: Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, James "BigJim" Wright, Shep Crawford, Drop Squad. Riding a crossover wave that culminated in a Grammy win for 1999's MOUNTAIN HIGHaVALLEY LOW, this gospel superstar re-teams with some of the same collaborators for her first studio album of the new millennium. Superstar producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis return to the helm for the inspirational lead-off single "Never Give Up," hip-hop flavored "I'm Thankful," and the gorgeous ballad "I'm Gonna Be Ready". Elsewhere, Adams keeps the contemporary R&B vibe going with the up-tempo funk of "Fo Sho'" (featuring fellow gospel songbird Karen Clark Sheard), groove-fueled jam "Unconditional," and the Stevie Wonder-lite of "Darling Girl" inspired by her newborn daughter. Like fellow crossover sensation Kirk Franklin, the former schoolteacher/model keeps one foot firmly placed in the world of Christian music. For this outing, Adams shares her faith on the lush "Only If God Says Yes" and makes like Patti Labelle on the equally inspiring "Since The Last Time I Saw You." BELIEVE continues to find Yolanda Adams reshaping the sounds of modern gospel in a way that sounds fresh without losing the message of the Lord. SKU: 1077545

O [Digipak]
Personnel: Damien Rice (vocals, guitar, clarinet, piano, bass, drums, percussion); Lisa Hannigan (vocals); Nicolas Dodd (conductor); Mark Kelly (electric guitar); Vivienne Long (cello); Jen Meunier (piano); Shane Fitzsimons (bass); Tomo (drums, percussion); Conor Donovan (timpani, percussion). The beginning of the 21st century found the UK offering a host of new Nick Drakes like Ed Harcourt, Badly Drawn Boy, Tom McRae, etc. On the surface, Damien Rice is not too far removed from them with his intense vocal style, confessional songs, and sparse, acoustic guitar-based arrangements. Upon closer inspection of his debut album O, however, he seems to be more aligned with the likes of David Gray; that's not to say that he mixes folk and electronica, but just that he incorporates old-school singer-songwriter influences in the service of something original. There's a hushed, intimate feel to O, and most of the songs are delivered in a delicate, fragile tone that's perfectly accompanied by the bare-bones production. Tasteful strings and other touches are added here and there, but strictly on an as-needed basis. The closer "Eskimo" erupts into a (literally) operatic climax, andthere's a bonus cut touching on an anomalous rock feel, but otherwise this is prime late-night music for your next Leonard Cohen costume party. (soprano saxophone); Dave Koz (saxophone); Israel Baker,Ralph Morrison, Betty Moor (violin); Alan de Veritch, Margot MacLaine, Marilyn Baker (viola); Frederick Seykora (cello); Robert Stone (contrabass); Fred Berry (flugelhorn); Robbie Buchanan (piano); C.J. Vanston (keyboards); Guy Roche (keyboards, synthesizer); Jimmy Johnson (bass); John Robinson (drums); Rafael Padilla (percussion); Claytoven Richardson, Melisa Kary, Vicki Randle, Sandy Griffith, Jeanie Tracy, Jean McLain, Terry Wood, Larry Jacobs, Joely Fisher, Liz Constantine, Joe Diggs, Diane Warren, Kitty Beethoven (background vocals). Producers: Ric Wake, Walter Afanasieff, Humberto Gatica, Guy Roche. Engineers include: Bob Cadway, Dana Jon Chappelle, Guy Roche. All selections are DAD except tracks 1, 6, 7 and 10 which are AAD. Celione Dion - she of the powerful pipes and killer romantic ballads - returned in full force on this much-anticipated sophomore disc. The woman who previously hit it huge in the U.S. with her 1991 duet with Peabo Bryson on the soundtrack of the Walt Disney movie BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (included here) clearly knew how to belt out a song, and then some. The album is full of lovely pop ballads (three from the pen Diane Warrer, the ubiquitous queen of the genre), big production flourishes, soaring chord changes, and stadium-ready guitar parts, highlights include the hit singles 'Love Can Move Mountains', 'Water From The Moon', 'If You Asked Me To' and 'Did You Give Enough Love'." Blonde On Blonde [SACD]
Personnel: Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Robbie Robertson (guitar); Charlie McCoy (harmonica); Hargus Robbins (piano); Al Kooper (organ); Kenneth Buttrey (drums); Wayne Moss, Jerry Kennedy, JoeSouth, Bill Aikins, Henry Strzelecki. Principally recorded at Columbia Recording Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. Only a year after HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED, Dylan miraculously topped himself with further epigrams of surrealistic poetry and emotional intrigue. The pressure of a punishing touring schedule and high public profile helped drive him to an unbelievable fit of creativity as he spontaneously scribbled these gems in his hotel rooms. We were spoiled with a double album, more Dylan music than we had previously heard, yet still destined to endure. BLONDE ON BLONDE surrounds the folk-rock bard with the likes of Al Kooper, Robbie Robertson, Charlie McCoy and Kenny Buttrey, all seasoned musicians giving this album a relaxed confidence quite unlike the youthful energy of HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED. Decades later this album still rewards and surprises. A gigantic record in every sense. SKU: 1086960

There's A Riot Goin' On
Sly & The Family Stone: Sylvester "Sly Stone" Stewart (vocals, keyboards); Freddie "Stone" Stewart (vocals, guitar); Rosie Stone (vocals, piano); Jerry Martini (saxophone); Cynthia Robinson (trumpet); Larry Graham (bass); Gregg Errico (drums). Almost no one was prepared for THERE'S A RIOT GOIN' ON. Although songs like "Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey" (from STAND!) pointed in its direction, most people expected more dance music on the order of "I Want To Take You Higher." Instead, Sly offered up dark, muted explorations of incest (the number-1 hit "Family Affair") and race(the re-worked and re-titled "Thank You For Talkin' To Me Africa"). THERE'S A RIOT GOIN' ON was also one of the first albums to employ electronic drum machines. SKU: 1011483

Erykah Badu was nominated for the 1998 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. BADUIZM won the 1988 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "On & On" won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and was nominated for Best R&B Song. BADUIZM marks the debut of a true songstress, with a voice like Billie Holiday's and a style that crosses many boundaries. Erykah Badu has exceptional rhythm, character and vibe, and a songwriting style that should restore some life to modern R&B. From her groundbreaking single "On & On" to freestyle skits like "Afro", Badu separates herself from other '90 vocalists with a style that is as broad as it is original. It's also real: On "Next Lifetime"and "Certainly," Badu demonstrates a remarkable ability to turn life's experiences into beautiful songs. SKU: 1005302

Journey
Fourplay: Larry Carlton (guitar); Bob James (keyboards); Nathan East (bass guitar); Harvey Mason (drums). Fourplay is the ultimate smooth-jazz outfit. Made up of four of the finest crossover artists, this group presents a cohesive mix of modern jazz and instrumental pop. Except for the opening track, "Fields of Gold," written by Sting, JOURNEY is made up of all original material; each player contributes tunes, and bassist Nathan East sings on about half the album. Tracks such as "From Day One," "Departure," and "Avalabop"sound similar to Pat Metheny's early ECM releases. However, these pieces are decidedly sweeter than Metheny's repertoire. "147 4th Street" features some bold playing from Larry Carlton (known for his work with Steely Dan). The acclaimed guitarist also plays a great bluesy solo on his own composition "Cool Train." However, this album is generally made up of carefully restrained improvisations. The smartly composed, mellow compositions are left to speak for themselves on this disc of warm and breezy music. Crooked Rain Crooked Rain
Pavement: Stephen Malkmus (vocals, guitar); Scott Kannberg (guitar, background vocals); Mark Ibold (bass); Bob Nastanovich, Steven West (drums). Tuneful without being soft, confident without being pompous, hip without being inaccesible, CROOKED RAIN, CROOKED RAIN is Pavement's next leap up the rock & roll evolution cycle. They may be playing for Leno now, but just a casual listen to the dissonant guitar solo of "Cut Your Hair" proves that the seeds planted with 1989's first SLAY TRACKS EP are coming to their logical fruition. Stephen Malkmus and co. have created an album that neither short-changes their status as prominent indie noise-makers, norstilts their growth as a musical ensemble. Thus, though the inspired eccentricity has been toned down on CROOKED RAIN--an instrumental tribute to fellow Stockton-ite Dave Brubeck being the closest thing--this is the most consistent set of stubbornly catchy songs they've ever come up with. From the bemused tunings and drunken AC/DC riffing of "Silence Kit"--with its somber lyric of leaving the urban life behind--to the epic closing of "Fillmore Jive"--which begs us to say "good night to the rock & roll era"--CROOKED RAIN is an album of short stories, full of irony and wit and hooks and no product endorsements whatsoever. It truly is an album "so good, they had to name it twice." SKU: 1069431
