Dancer With Bruised Knees
Canadian sisters Kate and Anna McGarrigle delivered a one-two punch when their 1976 debut was followed with this sterling album the next year. Gorgeous, heartbreakingly beautiful, forthright, and honest--this is timeless music. Their songs of love, loss and family are rooted in a sense of place that's positively palpable. The warm ensemble playing uses a few of their Montreal cohorts as well as some high profile session players. It is to the McGarrigle's credit that they can imbue each song with an immediacy that makes it sound as if they're sitting comfortably in their living room. Never completely at home on the concert stage (though consequently quite endearing), in the studio they thrive on the interplay with other musicians. All the players here are totally in the service of these crystalline songs. This and theMcGarrigle's self-titled debut are essential albums. SKU: 3103021

Prince
Solo performer: Prince (various instruments). Recorded at Alpha Studios, Burbank, California. Like his 1978 debut, FOR YOU, Prince composed, played, sang, produced and arranged all the songs on his 1979 follow-up, simply titled PRINCE. While PRINCE features a number of great dance songs, it also gave his future audience an idea of what they could expect from a talent many consider the finest pop composer of the 1980s. Barely into his 20's, Prince already possessed a remarkable musical vocabulary and subterranean understanding of an untold number of musical genres--ones he was rapidly combining in a way no one had heard before. On the rocker "Bambi," Prince shows off his dazzling, heavy metal-styled guitar work, while on "Still Waiting" and the now-pop standard "I Feel For You," he displays the kind of gentleness reminiscent of the best of Smokey Robinson or Stevie Wonder. Though PRINCE did yield the #1 R&B hit, "I Wanna Be Your Lover"--it also cracked the Top 40 on the pop charts--it wasn't until his next release that his highness truly captured the American consciousness. PRINCE stands as a remarkablerelease by an emerging talent of immeasurable innovation. SKU: 5063673

Sixpence None The Richer
Sixpence None The Richer: Leigh Nash (vocals); Matt Slocum (guitar, cello, Wurlitzer piano); Dale Baker (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Al Perkins (pedal steel guitar); John Mark Painter (oud, accordion, trumpet, Mellotron, hurdy-gurdy, bells, buhl-buhl); Peter Hyrka, Antoine Silverman, David Davidson (violin); Kris Wilkinson (viola); Tom Howard (piano); Phil Madeira (Hammond B-3 organ); J.J. Plasencio (acoustic & electric basses); Chris Donohue (bass); Mark Nash (hi-hat, cymbals). SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for BestRock Gospel Album. "Kiss Me" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. To listen to the self-titled debut from awkwardly named trio Sixpence None The Richer is to stare unflinchingly into the face of late '90s folk-rock. The band is clearly influenced by what's gone before, but their sound is completely modern and original. Fronted by the stylized vocals of Leigh Nash, the band winsomely strums and croons its way through highly personal songs about finding one's way in the world. The influence of folk-poppers like 10,000 Maniacs and Mazzy Star can be heard throughout, in the intimate acoustic guitar rhythms and poignantly conversational vocals, but there's a more progressive Throwing Muses sound at work here as well, keeping SIXPENCE NONE THE RICHER from getting too dewy-eyed. Let's Dance [Remastered] [SACD]
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Personnel: David Bowie (vocals); Stevie Ray Vaughan, Nile Rodgers (guitar); Robert Aaron, Stan Harrison (flute, tenor saxophone); Steve Elson (flute, baritone saxophone); Mac Gollehon (trumpet); Rob Sabino (keyboards); Carmine Rojas, Bernard Edwards (bass); Omar Hakim, Tony Thompson (drums); Sammy Figueroa (percussion); Frank Simms, George Simms, David Spinner (background vocals). Recorded at Mountain Studios, Switzerland. Digitally remastered by Peter Mew and Nigel Reeve (1999, Abbey Road Studios, London, England). Though he continued to evolve throughout his career, Bowie's post-SCARY MONSTERS output was markedly less stellar than his acclaimed '70s work. LET'S DANCE, however, is arguably his most memorable '80s recording. It didn't hurt that he reached out to some talented friends, like Stevie Ray Vaughan (who makes his recorded debut here as lead guitarist) and co-writers Iggy Pop ("China Girl") and Peter Godwin (of "Images of Heaven" fame, who helps out on "Criminal World.") Ultimately, though, it's Bowie's unique vision that makes LET'S DANCE a success. His funky, synth-driven avant-pop romps are shot through with a romance and poignancy that sets them apart from much of his later work. "Modern Love," for example, manages to be irresistibly catchy and ostensibly upbeat while depicting alienation and unfulfilled desires. SKU: 1087084

After The Rain
Personnel: John McLaughlin (guitar); Joey DeFrancesco (Hammond B-3 organ); Elvin Jones (drums). Recorded at Clinton Studios, New York on October 4-5, 1994. British guitarist John McLaughlin's spiritual initiation into the American jazz scene came as a member of drummer Tony Williams' Lifetime--as futuristic an organ trio as you'd ever want to hear. During their two years together, Williams, McLaughlin and organist Larry Young scandalized the jazz and rock communities alike, yet what they documented on EMERGENCY and TURN IT OVER endures as a visionary paradigm of collective improvisation. On AFTER THE RAIN, McLaughlin reintroduces the trio format (with Hammond organ wizard Joey DeFrancesco), and pays homage to one of his major influences, John Coltrane, by collaborating with Trane's legendary drummer, Elvin Jones. In "Afro Blue," McLaughlin's single-note phrasing and sudden rhythmic outbursts reflect his affinity for Trane's approach, while he performs the ballad "Naima" with tender understatement. The whole band really comes together on "Tones for Elvin Jones." DeFrancesco's voluble solo sets the pace, and McLaughlin responds with patient thematic development, untilhe finally whips out some trademark runs, rousing Jones to a fine emotional lather. All This Useless Beauty (Expanded Edition) [Remastered]
Full performer name: Elvis Costello & The Attractions. The 2001 edition of ALL THIS USELESS BEAUTY comes with a bonus disc of rare material including demos and alternative versions of songs. Many of the tracks on the original release were written by Elvis Costello for other artists to record. Elvis Costello & The Attractions: Elvis Costello (vocals, acoustic, electric & guitars, celesta, keyboards, bass); Pete Thomas (acoustic guitar, drums, percussion); Steve Nieve (piano, keyboards, programming, sequencing); Bruce Thomas (bass). Additional personnel includes: Brian Eno, The Fairfield Four, The Brodsky Quartet. Producers include: Elvis Costello, Geoff Emerick, Brian Eno, The Attractions, Lee Olsen. Reissue producers: Gary Stewart, Val Jennings. Engineers include: Geoff Emerick, Jon Jacobs, Sam Gibson. Principally recorded at Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland and Westside Studios, London, England. Includes liner notes by Elvis Costello. All tracks have been digitally remastered. After years of radical stylistic detours, Costello reunited with the Attractions for BRUTAL YOUTH, seemingto prove that Tom Wolfe was right about not being able to go home again. That album's followup, ALL THIS USELESS BEAUTY, is a logic-defying marvel, finding Costello and the Attractions at the peak of their powers. Though some of the arrangements hark back to THIS YEAR'S MODEL, EC and the boys don't really try to revisit the past. Rather, they apply the musical lessons they've learned over the years to create a new, more mature sound that still bears their unique sonic trademark. The song selection here is a bit of a grab bag, as many of these tunes were written by Costello for other artists, but there's such a consistency and vitality to the material that it all seems to be of a piece. "Why Can't a Man Stand Alone" is an emotive soul ballad that shows Costello's '60s R&B roots. "Complicated Shadows" has a whisper-to-a-scream arrangement that shows off the band's dynamic facility. The harmonically sophisticated ballad "I Want to Vanish" is proof positive that Costello really is the Gershwin of the post-punk generation. SKU: 1064616

Live In San Francisco
Personnel: Joe Satriani (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Eric Caudieux (guitar, keyboards); Stu Hamm (bass); Jeff Campitelli (drums). Recorded live in San Francisco, California in December 2000. "Always WithMe, Always With You" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance. For the two-disc LIVE IN SAN FRANCISCO, Joe Satriani takes a career-spanning tour of a back catalog dating back to his full-length 1986 debut NOT OF THIS EARTH. Aided and abetted by a trio of longtime supporting musicians led by fellow virtuoso and bassist extraordinaire Stu Hamm, Satch soars on longtime favorites like the furiously intense "One Big Rush," ludicrously speedy "Surfing With The Alien," and swaggering neo-funk of "Satch Boogie." Belying a reputation for fleet-fingered histrionics, Satriani uses this live outing to trade in some speed for a degree of tonal and stylistic nuance. Among the best examples are the heartfelt "Until We Say Goodbye" with its wealth of crying guitar and pathos-laced phrasing, the quasi-waltz that is "Always With Me, Always With You," and delicate closer "Rubina," peppered with sweet chords and swirling synths. Hamm's contributions are equally worthy, whether the pair of solos he tosses into the midst of the relentless "Raspberry Jam" or the poignant "Bass Solo" with its clever quote of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata." Although the lengthy set occasionally borders on the fringes of sameness, the twists and turns of Satch's dazzling fretboard heroics serve as an effective stimulant. SKU: 1061092

Under The Influence
UNDER THE INFLUENCE is Alan Jackson's tribute to the singers and songwriters who most influenced him, including George Jones, Merle Haggard and Conway Twitty. Personnel: Alan Jackson, Jimmy Buffett (vocals); Bruce Watkins, John Willis (acoustic guitar); Brent Mason, Brent Rowan (electric guitar); Paul Franklin, ScottySanders (steel guitar); Stuart Duncan, Larry Franklin (fiddle); Hargus M. "Pig" Robbins, Gary Prim (piano, keyboards); Glenn Worf, Michael Rhodes (bass); Eddie Bayers, Owen Hale (drums); John Wesley Ryles (background vocals). Principally recorded at Javelina Recording Studio, Wedgewood Sound and The Sound Station, Nashville, Tennessee; Clinton Recording Studio, New York, New York; Compass Point Studios, Nassau, Bahamas. Includes liner notes by Alan Jackson. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. UNDER THE INFLUENCE was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Country Album. Traditionalist Alan Jackson has paid tribute to his musical roots in the past with reworked versions of songs like "Who's Cheating Who" and "Summertime Blues." With UNDER THE INFLUENCE, an entire album's worth of classic country songs, Jackson truly proves the old adage, "They just don't write 'em like that anymore." Drinking, cheating, divorce, death--those classic country topics--are all here, in great songs made famous by the likes of George Jones, Merle Haggard, Charley Pride, Gene Watson, and Don Williams. Without imitating the original artist's delivery, Jackson manages to introduce a bit of each singer's style to the material: Pride's rich tones; Jones's stretched-out notes; Williams' laid- back approach. Jackson also wisely avoids modernizing the arrangements, so a hard country song like "Farwell Party"--a song so dark it could never be a hit today--retains its authentic feel. Highlights include "The Blues Man," an extended tribute to Hank Williams Jr., and "Right in the Palm of Your Hand," a mid-'70s Mel McDaniel track that still sounds incredibly fresh. Jackson closes with a crowd-pleaser: a version of "Margaritaville" with guest vocals by Jimmy Buffett himself. Overall, UNDER THE INFLUENCE is a fine introduction to country's past, from one of its present-day heroes. SKU: 1025697

Best 1991-2004
Personnel: Seal (vocals); Jakatta, Mikey Dread (vocals); Karlin, SoulShock (various instruments); The Onion (guitar); Michele Chiavarini (keyboards). Producers: Trevor Horn; Mark Batson; Dave Lee; Seal. Recording information: 1991 - 2004. Coming out of the UK dance scene via the early-1990s Adamski hit "Killer," Seal Henri Samuel spent the next decade-plus repeatedly appearing on the pop charts, with a sound drawing from the worlds of R&B, rock, and club music. BEST 1991-2004 does a stellar job of displaying the wide-ranging talents that enabled Seal to go from smash ballads ("Kiss from a Rose" and "Prayer for the Dying") togrittier soul ("Waiting for You" and "Get It Together"). The London native is equally at home handling his own songs or other artists' material. Seal's take on Echo & the Bunnymen's "Lips Like Sugar" crackles with the help of reggae star Mikey Dread, while his rendition of the Bacharach/David classic "Walk On By" shines, aided by a slight drum-loop infusion. BEST 1991-2004 is available in a single-disc version (with a silver cover) and as a double-disc set (with a gold cover). Those adventurous enough to go with the latter edition will be rewarded with an all-acoustic album featuring 13 of Seal's best-known cuts performed in an intriguingly spare style. SKU: 6576152

You're My Thrill
Personnel includes: Shirley Horn (vocals, piano); Johnny Mandel (conductor); Carl Saunders (trumpet); Larry Bunker (vibraphone); Alan Broadbent (piano); Dori Caymmi, Russell Malone (guitar); Brian Bromberg, Chuck Domanico, Charles Ables (bass); Steve Williams (drums). Recorded at Schnee Studios, Los Angeles, California from June 12-15, 2000 and at Capitol Studios, Los Angeles, California on September 26 & 27, 2000. Includes liner notes by Joel Siegel. YOU'RE MY THRILL was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. "You're My Thrill" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s). YOU'RE MY THRILL captures the pianist-singer in a trio setting with long time companions Charles Ables (bass) and Steve Williams (drums). On this outing, Horn recorded the trio first, then gave the tapes to Johnny Mandel who subsequently feathered orchestral arrangements into the mix. As usual, Horn's music is sultry and tender. Focusing on ballads, she takes us on a journey through the often-doleful world of love. Lyrics revolve around all aspects of amour from first kisses to final good-byes. The trio is relaxed and spare, as each songpaints a sleepy image of either hope or heartache. Some have criticized Horn's records as being overly saccharine, but no one could argue that her interpretations of the great American songbook are insincere or cold. In addition to the title track, highlights include the delicately swung "Why Don't You Do Right" featuring Russell Malone on guitar, and the haunting ballad "All Night Long." SKU: 1057469

Big Band Specials
Personnel: June Christy (vocals); Joe Maini, Charlie Kennedy, Bud Shank (alto saxophone); Bob Cooper, Bill Perkins (tenor saxophone); Jack Nimitz (baritone saxophone); Conte Candoli, Lee Katzman, Al Porcino, Ray Triscari (trumpet); Vern Friley, Dick Nash, Frank Rosolino, John Halliburton, LewMcCreary (trombone); Jimmy Rowles (piano); Joe Mondragon (bass); Mel Lewis (drums). Producer: Bill Miller. Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna. Recorded at Capitol Studios, Los Angeles, California on October 25 and November 5 & 19, 1962. Includes liner notes by Peter J. Levinson. Yet another (and welcome) reissue of a June Christy Capitol title, this time from the relatively late year of 1962 and arranged by Bill Holman, Shorty Rogers and husband Bob Cooper, instead of Christy's usual collaborator, Pete Rugulo. The absence of Rugulo's cubist arrangements seems to have relaxed the singer, resulting in one of Christy's more solidly swinging albums. BIG BAND SPECIALS is almost identical in concept and material to fellow Stan Kenton alumni Anita O'Day's SINGS THE WINNERS. Still, the occasionally technically limited Christy actually outdoes the virtuostic O'Day at her own musical game on freshly conceived classics like "Frenesi" and "Stompin' At The Savoy." The arrangements themselves match the singer in both intelligence and appeal, and tastefully avoid blaring brass in favor of pungent reed and trombone section-work. SKU: 1002964

Good Charlotte
Good Charlotte: Benji, Joel, Aaron, Billy, Paul. Recorded at Encore, NRG, Larrabee Studios, Los Angeles, California and Battery Studios, New York, New York. The coin of the rock realm in 2000 (or at least one of them) is slightly snotty pop-punk, delivered in a bratty sneer that's purerock & roll, over a bed of chugging guitars and blitzkrieg drums. Good Charlotte fits this bill nicely, adding the pop niceties required to reach the mainstream. As the quintet's debut album shows, though, the brattiness is largely on the surface. On the reggaefied "Waldorfworldwide," for example, the boys get downright open-hearted, expressing their desire to party without the threat of violence. The closing "Change" is practically a power ballad, with lush backdrop and gently swaying rhythm. These relatively subtle contrasts don't exactly make Good Charlotte eclectic, but they do give them enough variety to remain interesting for the length of this album. SKU: 1080508

Risk [ECD]
This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multi-media computer files. Megadeth: Dave Mustaine (vocals, guitar); Marty Friedman (guitar); David Ellefson (bass); Jimmy DeGrasso (drums). Recorded at Masterfonics, Inc. and The Tracking Room, Nashville, Tennessee from January to April 1998. Megadeth has always been a "progressive" metal band in that the musicians take a thrash approach and expand upon it. RISK is no different. The album title stems from the experimental approach taken by the band. RISK will definitely please the Mega-diehards and may draw in some new listeners as well. "Insomnia" features techno guitar riffs and violin and is primed for album-rockairplay. "Prince of Darkness," which also features violin, is a 6:25 metal opus done right. "Crush 'Em" is a fist pumping, arena rock gem. It is also the band's most commercial single to date. "Breadline," a brooding tale of homelessness, lacks the metallic punch of the group's early material but is a melodic winner. "I'll Be There" takes this a step further, going in a Bon Jovi-like direction. Drummer Jimmy DeGrasso's (formerly of Suicidal Tendencies) synchronized talents are featured on "Seven." One of the few '80s metal bands still prospering in the '90s, Megadeth shows no lack of creativity on RISK. The band has matured while still waving the metal banner. RISK pays offawith dividends. It Always Will Be
Personnel include: Willie Nelson (vocals, acoustic guitar); Lucinda Williams, Norah Jones, Paula Nelson (vocals); Biff Watson (acoustic guitar); Brent Mason (electric guitar); Paul Franklin (steel guitar); Mickey Raphael (harmonica); Steve Nathan (piano, keyboards); Michael Rhodes (bass guitar); Shannon Forrest (drums); Toby Keith (background vocals). Recording information: Ocean Way Studios, Nashville, Tennessee; Pedernales Studio, Spicewood, Texas; Loud Recording, Nashville, TN; Sony Music Studios, New York, NY. Even as he edged towards age 70, Willie Nelson remained a dazzlingly prolific artist, releasing live albums, theme-based collections, archival recordings, and more, all ata dizzying clip. Nevertheless, a proper studio album of new material from an artist of his stature, particularly on the prestigious imprint Lost Highway, remained an event even in 2004. Curiously, the man who made his road band the backbone of his music for so long elected to use a cast of familiar Nashville studio players for IT ALWAYS WILL BE, but they serve him well on an understated set of the old, new, borrowed, and blue. Tom Waits's spare, romantic ballad "Picture in a Frame" is a natural for Willie, as is the Jimmy Day chestnut "The Way You See Me." Nelson also picks up the thread of his preceding OUTLAWS & ANGELS live album by including some all-star duets, such as the misty ballad "Dreams Come True" with Norah Jones, and the yearning "Overtime" with the song's author, Lucinda Williams. Proving himself far from finished as a songwriter, Willie throws in a couple of new tunes from his own pen, and it all adds up to an agreeable mixed bag on IT ALWAYS WILL BE. SKU: 6575366

Space Boogie: Smoke Oddessey
Personnel: Kurupt, Nate Dogg, Soopafly, Damani, Daz Dillinger, Natina Wood, Anita "L.A.-Need" McCloud, DJ Quik, Butch Cassidy, Lil' 1/2 Dead, Jon B., Xzibit, MC Ren, Snoop Doggy Dogg, Goldie Loc, Traci Nelson, Mr. Kokane, Fred Durst, Dominique Gonzales (vocals); Fredwreck (guitar, Fender Rhodes piano, Moog synthesizer); Sean Cruse, Tim Kobza (guitar, bass); Anthony Mazza, Everlast (guitar); The Velvet Orchestra (strings); Jason Schweitzer (flute); Priest "Soopafly" Brooks (keyboards); Christian Olde Wolbers (bass); DJ Lethal (turntables); Fingazz. Producers include: "Fredwreck" Farid Nassar, Soopafly, Daz, DJ Quik, DJ Lethal. Engineers include: Richard "Segal" Huredia, "Fredwreck" Farid Nassar, Tim Nitz. Kurupt's involvement with the gangster rap movement began with vocal contributions to 1992's trend-setting Dr. Dre album THE CHRONIC. Since then, Kurupt has charted numerous successes as a soloist as well as in the group Dogg Pound, with longtime collaborator Daz. Kurupt's third solo full-length, SPACE BOOGIE: SMOKE ODDESSEY, showcases the MC's daring and willingness to push the boundaries of his own creative ability. Whereas in previous efforts Kurupt (Young Gotti) maintained a hardcore edge--P-Funk-derived bass lines and synthesizers, bouncing drum loops, and violence-drenched tales of rugged lifestyles--he has altered his focus a bit with SPACE BOOGIE: SMOKE ODDESSEY. With the leadoff single, "It's Over," featuring Natina Reed of pop girl group Blaque, Kurupt utilizes a borderline cheesy, melodic hook uncharacteristic of his previous, darker works. However, with songs such as "On, On Site," and "Bring Back That G Shit" he proves his mastery of classic West Coast gangsta music. The album's highlights come when he finds a happy medium between the pop and the hardcore. This is displayed admirably on "On Da Grind" featuring Daz, and "Kuruption" a duet with Everlast. The album gives an accurate cross-section of Kurupt's involvement in hip hop, providing a glimpse into his ability to craft complete songs with pop sensibility as well as songs firmly grounded inhis hardcore, gangsta roots. Live At The Budokan [SACD] [PA]
This is a (multi-channel) Super Audio CD, playable only Super Audio CD players. Personnel includes: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Zakk Wylde (guitar); Robert Trujillo (bass); Mike Bordin (drums). Recorded live at Budokan Hall, Tokyo, Japan on February 15, 2002. Fans fretting that Ozzy's reputation has been transformed into that of a distaff Robert Young thanks to the runaway success of the MTV reality show The Osbournes can breathe a sigh of relief upon hearing the fire-breathing performance rendered on LIVE AT BUDOKAN. Fronting a quartet that includes longtime guitarist Zakk Wylde (latest in a long line of hot-shot guitarists dating back to the late Randy Rhodes), Suicidal Tendencies bassist Robert Trujillo, and Faith No More drummer Mike Bordin, the Ozzman is in ferociously fine form. Hop-scotching through his considerable canon with Wylde providing molten riffs throughout, Ozzy delivers scalding versions of classics ranging from "I Don't Know" and "Crazy Train" to an over-the-top reading of "Mr. Crowley" juiced up by John Sinclair's ominous keyboard intro. Ozzy shows his range with the prog-metalpsychedelia of "No More Tears," the heartfelt emoting that defines the smash power ballad "Mama I'm Coming Home," and the soaring semi-autobiography "Road To Nowhere." Although the only Sabbath number included in this set is the overplayed "Paranoid," the rest of LIVE AT BUDOKAN crackles with the kind of energy that you're not going to find on a re-run of Father Knows Best. Secret Samadhi
Live: Chad Taylor, Patrick Dahlheimer, Chad Gracey, Edward Kowalczyk. Additional personnel: Jennifer Charles (vocals); John Carin (keyboards). Recorded at The Hit Factory, New York, New York in 1996. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. The members of this Pennsylvania foursome have been playing together since high school, and it shows in the empathic communication that exists between them; fans may hear SECRET SAMADHI as simply a followup to the 1994 pop smashTHROWING COPPER, but it has the strength of years of music-making behind it. Bass, drums, guitars and vocals operate in perfect conjunction with each other, creating a wholly interdependent web of sound. This is music as sincere as '90s rock gets. While singer Ed Kowalczyk's heart-on-a-sleeve vocals are slightly more subdued here than on previous albums, the overall approach is still earnest enough to avoid the pratfalls of alternative rock postmodernism that mire so many contemporary guitar bands. The songs on SECRET SAMADHI utilize a stripped-down approach that features Kowalczyk's voice prominently, with guitars alternating between moody folk-rock jangle and overdriven grunge. Throughout the album, drummer Chad Gracey and bassist Patrick Dahlheimer work together to provide a ferocious, primal rhythmic assault that prevents even Kowalczyk's headiest lyrics from getting too introspective.
