Saxophonist GregOsby is one of the generation of post-Coltrane players who've absorbed not only bop and post-bop conventions, but also jazz avant-garde, funk and rock. This makes Osby a singular player, with a blues-informed, bittersweet tone recalling Gary Bartz or Donald Harrison.
On INVISIBLE HAND, Osby gets jazz legends Andrew Hill and guitarist Jim Hall to act as sidemen for the first time in over a decade. The resulting mix of standards and originals by Osby, Hall, and Hill makes for an understated yet gently compelling album. There's a deceptively laid-back, relaxed feel to this session, which almost obscures the fact that there are many unpredictable twists and turns to each tune. Osby's "The Watcher" is a somber yet lovely elegy that avoids messy sentimentality, while his version of the Nat "King" Cole classic "Nature Boy" sounds like it should be part of the soundtrack to a Brazilian film noir. "Tough Love" is a soulful tribute to the blues ballad sides of Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt and Ornette Coleman. INVISIBLE HAND is a classic example of a talented iron hand in a velvet glove.

On SMILER, as per usual, Stewart's approach towards recording was to invite over a bunch of friends, get the spirits flowing and have a grand time laying down tracks. The gang included Elton John, who plays on his own "Let Me Be Your Car." Along with Reg's song, Stewart's other covers included a raucous "Sweet Little Rock 'N' Roller," a lovingly rendered Sam Cooke medleyof "Bring It On Home To Me/You Send Me" and a reworking of Aretha Franklin's classic that reads as "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Man." Ron Wood returned on guitar and co-wrote the Mott-like "Sailor" and "Dixie Toot" with Stewart, who gave the latter selection a New Orleans twist by having Chris Barber's Jazz Band play on it. Rod's creative derring-do included an instrumental version of the Lerner & Loewe standard "I've Grown Accustomed To Her Face" and use of the Tropic Isle Steel Band on the Paul & Linda McCartney penned "Mine For Me."

For all its shortcomings, MTV's UNPLUGGED series, presenting artists in an ostensibly stripped-down, acoustic setting, has provided the world with a few recorded gems, including this album. Young's turn on the show amounts to a live best-of, focusing (out of necessity) on the ballad end of his repertoire. Supported by longtime cohorts like Nils Lofgren, Tim Drummond and Ben Keith, Young reaches back to his earliest solo recordings ("The Old Laughing Lady") as well as well as offering up some new tunes ("From Hank To Hendrix," "Unknown Legend").
Amid the electrical storm of Crazy Horse, it's often easy to forget how brightly Young shines as an acoustic balladeer, his high, lonesome whine taking on a plaintive quality, as on this recording. From the surrealism of "Pocahontas" to the existential angst of "World On A String," Young works his idiosyncratic magic. As a bonus, UNPLUGGED offers some interesting rearrangements of old tunes, particularly "Like A Hurricane," which is presented as a pump organ-driven slowburner.

R. Kelly starts this disc off with a straight-up gospel sermon, and his vocal style is well-suited to it. He learned his craft in church, and he gives praise to God on the disc's liner notes. Of course, the second song is called "Hump Bounce," so that also tells you where this popular, strong-voiced soul singer is coming from.
Kelly sings about different aspects of love, sex, and relationships, with a style that owes much to those who came before him--Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, and a host of others who refined and perfected the art of expression through vocalization. His formula is simple: take a slow or mid-tempo modern R&B structure, add a healthy dose of gospel-inflected vocal runs, up and and down the scale, and Presto!--another hit.
Kelly's material is almost all of the slow-groove style.This is music to make out to, plain and simple, and Kelly is good at what he does. On "Not Gonna Hold On," Kelly and producer Barry Hankerson create a truly hypnotic jam, one that gives the singer room to flex his impressive vocal chops. The arrangement is spare, with just a steady drum tap, and a synthesized keyboard flowing like rainwater behind the background vocal track. Kelly knows how to create a mood, and he does it over and over again.

ACME, JSBX's sixth full-length album, is an urban juke-joint rabble-rouser for the end of the century, a summation of the band's journeys up various tributaries of chaos and tradition, a final bedding of EXILE ON MAIN STREET and hip-hop. Of course to be all these things, it has to be a kick-ass rock and roll album--and, of course, it is. Russell Simins and producers Dan "The Automator" and Calvin Johnson create the sleekest groove machine to date for Spencer's promotional-slogans-as-rock-chants, or else Steve Albini strips away all sonic accessories to leave them in their primordial rock-trio skivvies.
On songs like like "Bernie" and "High Gear," the Blues Explosion's rock power is positively Zep-esque. Yet they balance their grinding, blues-riff rides with leveling reflections--of groove as a downbeat reprieve ("Calvin"), of song as a melancholy love call ("Magical Colors," which sounds likeit fell off EXILE's sublime fourth side). Of course, sometimes they sound like misplaced white boys who reek of North Mississippi gin, and sometimes like poseurs riding a wave of Lower-East-Side-via-Berlin noise, screaming "Blues Explosion, attack!" But on ACME, the JSBX never forgets that it's a "rawk" band first and post-modern art project somewhere down the list.

THE UNDISCOVERED FEW, guitarist Rodney Jones' debut for Blue Note, represents an artist with a firm foundation. His confident and dazzling playing is full of tradition even while it reaches for the future. Jones' spiritual philosophies about music come through clearly, as each piece reflects a purity of conviction and meaningful expression. Several likeminded master musicians assist Jones in this endeavor, including Tim Hagans, Greg Osby, Donald Harrison, Mulgrew Miller, and Lewis Nash. Fans should be grateful for whatever it is that goes on in the mind and heart of singer/songwriter extraordinaire Kristen Hersh to make her produce such dreamy, tortured, beautiful music. She's made album after consistently strong album since her mid '80s heyday with Throwing Muses.
With SKY MOTEL, there's no evidence that Kristen Hersh's gifts are waning. "Echo," the album's opener, features her trademark elastic melodies and fluid guitar lines as they snake through crunching, riff-driven progressions or deftly woven dynamic shifts. Some songs, such as "Costa Rica," and the ghostly "Husk," drip with an eerie, little girl singsong quality, while others, like "Cathedral Heat," burble with the odd, fairytale logic of alien psychological territory. Here, Hersh has expanded the instrumentation and general sonic palette of her solo work (both HIPS AND MAKERS and STRANGE ANGELS are primarily acoustic), and the results are further refined by her increasing mastery of studio production. SKY MOTEL isanother gem from one of alternative rock's brightest lights.

"Colors Of The Wind" won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture Or For Television. Vanessa Williams' version of "Colors Of The Wind" was nominated for a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
In the hands of composers Alan Menken and lyricist Stephen Schwarz, POCAHONTAS--the romantic tale of an English settler, Captain John Smith, and a Native American maiden, Pocahontas--becomes a gateway to the examination of colonialism, environmentalism and spiritual awareness in the New World. The men of the Virginia Company sing about killing "an injun/or maybe two or three" and plundering natural resources for profit, to tunes that sound deceptively like old sea chanties. On the other hand, the songs of the Native American characters are full of nature imagery, evoking a simple existence and a peacefulspirit--leaving no question as to whose moral camp the writers align themselves with. Menken's instrumental sweeps tie the featured vocal tracks together, using meditative orchestral flourishes and bringing to mind his earlier Disney scores.
The soundtrack's last two songs pull the story's romantic overtones to the forefront, and they are the album's grand pop moments. Amidst synthesizer stardust, Vanessa Williams' "Colors Of The Wind" invokes Pocahontas' wild, instinctive tendencies while confessing the willingness of her heart and spirit to leap into the emotional unknown. Jon Secada and Shanice end the adventure with the duet "If I Never Knew You," prophesizing that love is indeed mightier than the sword (and the ideology), even when it goes unfulfilled.

American folk music has produced few artists as gifted and complex as Woody Guthrie. Guthrie's talents as a singer, harmonica player, and guitar player were merely ordinary, but as a songwriter, storyteller, and provocateur Guthrie had few equals. Guthrie's genius lay in his gift for seamlessly integrating his leftist political principles into his tales of common folks. Nowhere is this gift more evident than on DUST BOWL BALLADS. The fourteen-song set, originally released in 1940 on two albums of 78s, contains some of Woody Guthrie's most immediate and vibrant compositions, not surprising given that Guthrie had lived through the horrific Oklahoma dust storms of the early '30s.
DUST BOWL BALLADS benefits from its thematic cohesion, which allows it to play asa travelogue through the hard lives of Okie refugees. A number of tunes here will be instantly familiar: "I Ain't Got No Home," "Vigilante Man," "Pretty Boy Floyd," "Do Re Mi," and "So Long, It's Been Good to Know Yuh" are all campfire standards. The less well-known tunes here, however, are no less great. Particularly memorable are "Tom Joad" (a seven-minute Cliff Notes version of "The Grapes of Wrath"), and "Talking Dust Bowl Blues." A classic album.

Those who look at this album-length "EP" as the next bold step in the evolution of the ever-progressing Goldie will be disappointed, simply because that's not what it's supposed to be. As Goldie himself admits, his musical passions and creativity experienced a rebirth in the making of SATURNZ RETURN, and the cuts here offer remixes of tracks from that recording, presenting an intriguing alternate view of the album. Ethereal vocal samples mix with deftly manipulated breakbeats, orchestral stabs, exotic-sounding percussion and naked electronics to create a sonic landscape that's alternately frenetic and soothing, inviting and tumultuous. Over an hour in length, RING OF SATURN seems to stretch the traditional time barrier of EPs, but that's the way Goldie wants this recording to be percieved, not as a free-standing artistic statement, but as a bridge between his third and fourth albums. As such, it's entirely successful on its own terms.

Alan Jackson delivers what his fans expect here--well-written songs and outstanding vocals--plus a bit more. The main topic is love, but Jackson's treatment of the theme is far ranging. In the jaunty album opener, "She's Right On the Money," a smitten man has nothing but the highest praise for his girl: "She's a three point jump shot that's nothin' but net." "Gone Crazy," one of five Jackson-penned songs on the CD, paints a picture of a man losing his mind after a breakup.
The lovely "What A Day Yesterday Was" celebrates a longtime relationship, while "Dancin' All Around It" captures the nervous excitement of a new romance. The most startling track, though, is "I'll Go On Loving You," which resurrects that old country tradition: the recitation. Love or hate it, it'll make you sit up and take notice. For comic relief there's "Another Good Reason," the tale of a boozer terrifiedhe's going to "end up like old Hank." "Little Man" is a true standout--another Jackson composition about the fate of the small businessman in today's America. It's a neat piece of social commentary, proving that when it comes to song ideas, Jackson still hasn't run out of gas.

In the early '90s, Elinor Blake (formerly of The Pussywillows and The Shitbirds) transformed herself into French-pop songstress April March. Taking her cues from such '60s icons as France Gall and Francoise Hardy, March released a slew of singles and EPs on tiny labels, setting her helium-filled bilingual coo to a variety of sympathetic, melodic settings.
CHROMINANCE DECODER, March's full-length debut, begins with the Pizzicato Five-gone-triphop "Knee Socks" and "Sugar." But March soon settles into a more comfortable mode, sounding like a Francophile Petula Clark on "Garcon Glacon" and hitting herfull Serge Gainsbourg-inspired stride on the brilliant "Mignonette." From there, March bounces from the Bacharach-meets-Stereolab vibe of the title track to inspired daffiness (the bouncy "Garden Of April"), to Jeanne Moreau-esque acoustic balladry ("Mickey Et Chantal") and back-without sticking in any one place too long.
