It's Alright
Includes liner notes by Yoko Ono. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Yoko Ono's '80s albums, like this 1982 release, are her rapprochement with the pop music mainstream. Legend has it that Ono and John Lennon were inspired to record DOUBLE FANTASY in 1980 by hearing the B-52s' "Rock Lobster," in which Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson mimicked Ono's early vocal style. Indeed, after new wave and post-punk, Ono's music simply didn't sound that weird anymore! Also, by the '80s, Ono's music had neither the playful anarchy of her '60s performance art orthe seething anger of her '70s albums. Possibly the best of her '80s albums, IT'S ALRIGHT (I SEE RAINBOWS) has a vaguely sad yet resolute feel to it, as Ono continues her career-long tendency toward unblinking self-revelation in songs like "My Man," "Let the Tears Dry" and the two lovely title tracks. This reissue CD contains two bonus tracks, including a different version of "Beautiful Boys" from DOUBLE FANTASY. SKU: 1014665

Best 1991-2004 (Special Edition)
Personnel: Seal (vocals); Jakatta, Mikey Dread (vocals); Eric Schermerhorn (guitar, autoharp, marimba); Chris Bruce (acoustic guitar, acoustic bass guitar); David Campbell (strings); Chris Demetriou (horns); Deron Johnson (piano, celesta, harpsichord, Hammond b-3 organ, pump organ, vibraphone); Ian Dankworth (acoustic bass guitar); Ramy Antoun (drums, percussion). Recording information: Sarm West Studios, London, England. Coming out of the UK dance scene via the early-1990s Adamski hit "Killer," Seal Henri Samuel spent the next decade-plus repeatedly appearing on the pop charts, with a sound drawing from the worlds of R&B, rock, and club music. BEST 1991-2004 does a stellar job of displaying the wide-ranging talents that enabled Seal to go from smash ballads ("Kiss from a Rose" and "Prayer for the Dying") to grittier soul ("Waiting for You" and "Get It Together"). The London native is equally at home handling his own songs or other artists' material. Seal's take on Echo & the Bunnymen's "Lips Like Sugar" crackles with the help of reggae star Mikey Dread, while his rendition of the Bacharach/David classic "Walk On By" shines, aided by a slight drum-loop infusion. BEST 1991-2004 is available in a single-disc version (with a silver cover) and as a double-disc set (with a gold cover). Those adventurous enough to go with the latter edition will be rewarded with an all-acoustic album featuring 13 of Seal's best-known cuts performed in an intriguingly spare style. SKU: 6576153

Sefronia
Personnel includes: Tim Buckley (vocals, 12-string guitar); Joe Falsia, Lee Underwood, Bob Rafkin (guitar); Tom Scott (tenor saxophone); Fred Selden (flute); Earl Dunier (English horn); Mark Tiernan, Denny Randall (keyboards); Bernie Mysior (bass); Buddy Heim (drums); King Errison (congas, tambourine, percussion); Myrna Matthews, Sharon Beard, Lisa Roberts (background vocals). Engineers include: Kerry McNabb, Larry Hirsch, Roy Cicalo. Principally recorded at Paramount Recording Studios, Los Angeles, California. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot & Ken Perry. SEFRONIA is an occasionally mesmerizing and very strange album, even by Tim Buckley's latter-day standards. Anybody who could open a lyric with the line "I couldn't buy you with one hundred cattle" (asBuckley does in part two of the album's title song) is harboring no illusions about his ability to sell records. The aforementioned two-part title song is a highly original, abstract mix of folk, jazz, and art song, featuring, like the rest of the album, typically spellbinding vocals. More weirdness is on display in "I'd Recognize Your Face," a duet (with the lost-to-history Marcia Waldorf on vocals) sung from the point of view of a divorced couple in which the guy isn't paying alimony and has never seen his own son. It's autobiographical, although most listeners at the time had no idea. Buckley closes the album with a version of the most ambiguous and spooky song in rock history--the Jaynettes' "Sally Go Round the Roses." SKU: 1014659

Untitled/Unissued [Remastered]
The Byrds: Clarence White (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Gene Parsons, Skip Battin (vocals); Roger McGuinn (guitar); Gram Parsons (background vocals). Additional personnel: Byron Berline (violin); Terry Melcher (piano). Producers: Terry Melcher, The Byrds, Bob Irwin, Roger McGuinn, Jim Dickson. Includes liner notes by David Fricke, Johnny Rogan and Derek Taylor. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Originally released as the two-album set UNTITLED, this double disc includes an entire album's worth of unreleased material. Split between live cuts of vintage Byrds material and newer studio songs, disc one features new member Skip Battin's contributions along with songs originally written by Roger McGuinn for an aborted Broadway remake of Ibsen's PEER GYNT. Guitarists McGuinn and Clarence White are the in-concert driving forces throughout Dylan covers ("Positively 4th Street"), early hits ("Hey Mr. Spaceman"), and newer songs ("Lover Of The Bayou"). Battin proved his value by writing a stirring anti-war anthem ("Welcome Back Home") and a song about the environment ("Hungry Planet"), which he co-wrote with McGuinn. Elsewhere, McGuinn lends the stirring "Chestnut Mare" and the poignantly introspective "All The Things." White pumped up the country/blues side of the Byrds by taking a rare vocal on both Lowell George's "Truck Stop Girl" and Leadbelly's "Take A Whiff On Me." The wealth of Byrdsian artifacts on disc two include alternate versions of existing songs ("All The Things," "Yesterday's Train"), previously unreleased gems (Lowell George's "Willin'" and "White's LightningPt. 2"), and even more live goodies ("Old Blue" and "My Back Pages"). Back To The Sweethearts Of The Rodeo
Warning: This two-disc set from 1998 sports a deliberately misleading title. (Actually, it's also subtitled "The Flying Burrito Brothers' Farewell Album," a claim which quickly proved to be misleading in itself.) This album has no connection whatsoever to the Byrds' classic SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO, which featured original Burritos co-founders Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman. More importantly, there are exactly two Burritos present, guitarist John Beland and fiddler Gib Guilbeau, neither of whom were in any of the band's classic early lineups. In the eyes of some purists, this is not a Burritos album at all. Thisis not to say the album's without merit, however. Recorded quickly and roughly, the set has some pleasingly rough edges on its new-country (think Travis Tritt, not the Waco Brothers) tunes, and the covers are well-chosen and soulfully done. It may not be the Burritos, but it ain't bad. SKU: 6324541

Ben Webster And Associates
Personnel: Ben Webster, Coleman Hawkins, Budd Johnson (tenor saxophone); Roy Eldridge (trumpet); Jimmy Jones (piano); Les Spann (guitar); Ray Brown (bass); Jo Jones (drums). Producer: Norman Granz. Reissue producer: Bryan Koniarz. Recorded at Nola Recording Studio, New York, New York on April 9, 1959. Originally released on Verve (6056). Includes liner notes by Brian Priestly and Leonard Feather. Digitally remastered using 24-Bit technology by Kevin Reeves (universal Music Studios-East). This is part of the Verve Records Master Edition series. On this 1959 release, we hear Ben Webster with his idol Coleman Hawkins and legends Roy Eldridge (trumpet), Ray Brown (bass), and Jo Jones (drums). Tenor great Budd Johnson also appears on this CD (the only other swing era tenor giant who is missing from this session is the inimitable Lester Young!). This famous release is a celebration of the saxophoneand the jam session, which are staples in jazz. These musicians embark on a musical journey that is as exciting as it is adventurous. While the music sticks pretty much within the boundaries of "mainstream jazz," it is apparent that these players are all inspired by their surroundings. Much of this CD is a healthy blowing competition between the horns. They sometimes spurn each other on; other times, they act as foil. The result is a batch of tunes (five total) that really swing. Highlights include the intense "Young Bean" and "De-Dar." On the ballad, "Time After Time" Johnson and Coleman sit out, leaving Webster to break our hearts all by himself. SKU: 1032289

Snow On The Sahara
Personnel includes: Natalie Cole (vocals); Rob Mathes (electric guitar, dobro, piano, Wurlitzer piano, keyboards, programming, background vocals); Michael Thompson (guitar); Dave Tofani (tenor saxophone); Ronnie Cuber (baritone saxophone); Jeff Kievit (trumpet); Dave Bargeron (trombone); John Clark (French horn); Charles Floyd (piano); Rob Mounsey (electric piano, keyboards, programming); Clifford Carter (Fender Rhodes piano, Hammond B-3 organ); Peter Wolf (keyboards, bass, drum programming); David Foster (keyboards); Will Lee, Nathan East, Tony Levin (bass); Steve Gadd, John Robinson (drums); Phil Ramone, Luther Vandross, Curtis King, Fonzi Thornton, Darryl Tookes, James "D-Train" Williams (background vocals). Producers: Phil Ramone, David Foster, Natalie Cole, Peter Wolf. Engineers include: Eric Schilling, Felipe Elgueta, Brad Gilderman. Principally recorded at Right Track Studios, New York, New York; Capitol Studios & Chartmaker Studios, Los Angeles, California. Like fine wine, Natalie Cole improves with age. The masterful vocalist first achieved success via the R&B charts in the mid-'70s, but truly broke through with 1991's five-times-platinum UNFORGETTABLE WITH LOVE, in which she covered her father Nat "King" Cole's standards. On SNOWFALL, Natalie comes into her own as an artist. Her wonderful vocal range is showcased on some of her best material in years. Producer Phil Ramone adds his magic touch. Ms. Cole's elegance is evident on "A Song for You" and "More Than You'll Ever Know". She gets gritty and soulful on "Reverend Lee" and "Corinna," while the title track is both metaphoric love song and a smoothjazz classic. "Say You Love Me" is a piano ballad with a great arrangement, and despite its title, "Everyday I Have the Blues" keeps the affair swingin'. She demonstrates her technical prowess on the '50s style R&B "With My Eyes Wide Open I'm Dreaming." Cole also both delivers her own soulful rock spin and gives props to Bob Dylan on his "Gotta Serve Somebody." SKU: 1017731

Recorded at A&R Studios, New York, New York, on November 11 and 16, 1964. Includes liner notes by Gene Lees and Zan Stewart. The idea that an instrumentalist as gifted as Wes Montgomery wouldn't want to just blow incredible jazz in a combo usually makes for the sticking point with his pop albums for Verve. But there are a few mitigating factors. First, Montgomery made a whole handful of small combo records for Riverside between 1959 and 1963, reissues of which are freely available. Second, both jazz singers (Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald spring to mind) and instrumentalists (say, Louis Armstrong and Charlie Parker) had long been voluntarily recording pop material amidst big band or orchestral settings. Third, releasing jazz records has rarely made any artist a whole lot of money, and it's not hard to imagine a guy like Wes Montgomery with six kids to support saying to his manager, when the sales figures for MOVIN' WES started coming in, "Yeah! Whencan we make another record like this?" Montgomery is a featured soloist here, so there's not the excitement of hearing him interact with, say, Winton Kelly or Hank Jones. SKU: 1004033

Nana Mouskouri In New York (The Girl From Greece Sings)
Personnel include: Nana Mouskouri (vocals). Liner Note Authors: Nana Mouskouri; Nikos Petroulakis. Something of an all-star session--including producer Quincy Jones, conductor Torrie Zito, and sound engineer Phil Ramone--Nana Mouskouri's 1962 US debut presents the international star performing selections from the Great American Songbook. In phrasing and intonation, Mouskouri shows the influence of her jazz models Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday, yet her Greek accent, as well as her classical and opera vocal training, make for an utterly distinctive approach. The mood of the set oscillates from understated romance ("No Moon at All")to swelling drama ("What Now My Love"), the latter in particular informed by an almost theatrical sensibility. But Mouskouri's grasp of syncopation and swing is superb, and her improvisatory work on "Love Me or Leave Me" and the breathy lyricism of "The Touch of Your Lips" prove her mastery of the jazz idiom. Excellent packaging and notes, plus the inclusion of three previously unreleased bonus tracks (check out the wonderfully quirky version of "I Get a Kick Out of You"), make this formerly import-only disc a must. Stakes Is High
De La Soul: Pos Plug Wonder Why, Dave "Dr.ama," (rap vocals); Maseo. Additional personnel: Common, Mos Def, Truth Enola (rap vocals); Zhane, Jazzyfatnastees (vocals). Producers: De La Soul, Spearhead X, Ogee, Skeff Anslem, Jay Dee. Engineers: Guido Osorio, Tim Latham. Recorded at World Recording Facility and Platinum Island, New York, New York. Still straight-up from Strong Island, still pushing the hip-hop envelope, still De La Soul. What these three guys have, if you don't know by now, is a platinum-certified knack for big, phat beats and literate, creative rhymes. The kind of beats that make you nod your head without thinking. Andthe kind of rhymes that make you hit "Rewind" in awe. Fluid. Smooth. But always an undercurrent of emotion--sometimes romantic frustration, as in "Dog Eat Dog," sometimes thinly veiled satire (it is, isn't it?), as in "Baby Baby Baby Baby Ooh Baby," and sometimes pride in their home turf and their talent, as in "Long Island Degrees." Sure, as on just about any hip-hop disc these days, there's the requisite "I'm the best" braggadocio. De La Soul has a right to brag, though. This band has stayed fiercely loyal to a pure hip-hop sound, and as a result is still 3 feet high (at least) and still rising. SKU: 1086823

I'm Not Following You [ECD]
I'M NOT FOLLOWING YOU is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as multimedia computer files. Personnel: Edwyn Collins (vocals, various instruments); Mark E. Smith (vocals); Andrew Hackett (guitar, background vocals); Boz Boorer (guitar); Naomi Samuel (cello); Sebastian Lewsley (strings, keyboards, glockenspiel, vibraphone, programming); David Munday (flute); Sean Read (baritone saxophone, keyboards, background vocals); Martin Drover (trumpet, flugel horn); Phil Thornalley (keyboards, bass); Clare Kenny (bass, background vocals); Paul Cook, David Ruffy, Peter Jones (drums); Analogue Frog (percussion, programming); Marcia McDonald (background vocals). Scottish songsmith Edwyn Collins is best described as irrepressible: with the classic '80s group Orange Juice ("Rip It Up"), and during his lengthy solo career, Collins has been through countless tangles with record labels and retained an inexhaustible supply of musical and lyrical sarcasm. I'M NOT FOLLOWING YOU blends his casually growling vocal style with vitriolic wit against a backdrop of '70's-influenced musical caricature. "Seventies Night" makes its cynical statement by juxtaposing the belligerent, bloated-sounding voice of guest Mark E. Smith of the Fall with a disco backing track that's mocked with such accuracy it's hard todiscern irony from genuine devotion. Collins's gift for musical mimicry is evident throughout the album. The breezy, sentimental "No One Waved Goodbye" would not sound out of place on a 70's film soundtrack. "Superficial Cat" sits Collins's deep-voiced storytelling atop a Stonesish instrumental setting, but with a generous smattering of spacey, echoing guitar effects. Nowhere is Collins's message clearer than on "Adidas World," a searing, synth-driven send-up of corporate-sponsored youth culture. SKU: 1007039

Ice On Fire [Remastered]

Recorded at The Sol Studio, Cookham, Berkshire, England. Originally released on Rocket (26). Includes liner notes by John Tobler. Digitally remastered by Gus Dudgeon (Abbey Road Studios). It seems as if Elton John was still settling on a discernable style on 1985's ICE ON FIRE. He brought in Gus Dudgeon, the architect of such elaborate, wide-screen productions as GOODBYE YELLOWBRICK ROAD, and his touch can be felt in the lush synthesized sound that dominates this record. Even the song credits, full of Simmons drums, synth-guitar, and Yamaha TX81C, attest to the slick production values. "Nikita" was the record's Top 10 single. The sweeping melody of this gentle ode to a Russian girl rides atop a percolating rhythm track. The synthesizer-drenched sound tends to place it firmly within its era, but the pull of "Nikita"'s melody is fairly irresistible. It features backing vocals by George Michael, who was at his peak of superstardom at the time. Elsewhere on the record, Elton joins forces with the rhythm section of Queen for "Too Young." The fade of "Wrap Her Up," in which Elton sings out the names of women he'd like to wrap up and take home--ranging from Princess Caroline of Monaco to Nancy Reagan--is the record's strangest moment. Should God Forget (A Retrospective)
Compilation producers: Bruce Dickinson, Tim Butler. All tracks have been digitally remastered by Mark Wilder (Sony Music Studios, New York). Recorded between 1980 and 1991. The Psychedelic Furs compilation SHOULD GOD FORGET: A RETROSPECTIVE is, in a word, a definitive collection. It should put to rest all the quibbles that fans may have had with the previous Furs best-of collections (unless, of course, one wanted to whine about the inclusion of live versions over studio ones). Presented in roughly chronologicalorder, it spans the band's entire career, from their 1979 self-titled debut through 1991's WORLD OUTSIDE, with stops along the way for the odd b-side, five live tracks (three of which were never previously released anywhere in the world), and a couple of alternate versions (including a freaky version of "Alice's House"). The collection shows the bands progression from the punk roots of their early material through a successful flirtation with slick, commercial music and into the taut, rougher sound (both lyrically and musically) of their last two albums. Standouts include the harsh live take on "Soap Commercial," the spectacularly insulting "We Love You," the brittle sentiment of "Love My Way," the grandiosity of "Highwire Days," the fireworks of "Heartbreak Beat," and "Torch," a beautiful pinnacle in Richard Butler's lyrical talent. This two-disc set is THE place to begin discovering (or rediscovering) the Psychedelic Furs. SKU: 4123114
