Liquid Skin
Gomez: Ian Ball,Paul Blackburn, Tom Gray, Ben Ottewell, Olly Peacock. Additional personnel: Matt Turner (vocals, guitar); Ken Nelson & The Samurais, Steve Fellows (guitar); Tony Looby (alto saxophone); Rob Charles (tenor saxophone); Tony Robinson (trumpet, trombone); Jack Tinker (piano); Dajon Everett & The Appetite (percussion); Mojave 3, Ward, Krishnadassan, Bramham, Page, Joey The Dog (background vocals). Engineers: Ken Nelson, Dae Hadley, Paul Hicks. Recorded at Parr Street Studios, Liverpool, England; Abbey Road Studios, The Strongroom, & Blackwind Studios, London, England. Gomez successfully combines the old with the new. On LIQUID SKIN the band mixes touches of '60s psychedelia and hippie folk-rock with a gritty, angular, post-grunge alt-rock sensibility. Acoustic instruments abound, buoyed by rootsy-sounding organ and the occasional electric guitar rave-up. At times, the songs employ funky rhythms that could only have been born in the wake of hip-hop and electronica, but the lack of electronics and programmed rhythms makes them feel entirely organic. Gomez is more about songs than jams, but there is a sense of kinship to the expansive neo-stoner rock of groups like Phish and Blues Traveler. Unlike those outfits, though, Gomez retains a very British feel, whether the eclectic arrangements on LIQUID SKIN lean toward the orchestral or the pastoral. SKU: 5059338

America's Sweetheart

Live Under The Sky
Personnel: Herbie Hancock (piano); Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Freddie Hubbard (trumpet); Ron Carter (double bass); Tony Williams (drums). Liner Note Author: Bob Belden. Recording information: Denon Colosseum, Tokyo, Japan (07/26/1979 - 07/27/1979). If you're looking for some potent jazz, look no further. Pianist Herbie Hancock's V.S.O.P. - LIVE UNDER THE SKY is about as heavy as it gets. This release features the legendary mid-1960s Miles Davis lineup, minus Davis, of course. In the great trumpeter's stead, however, is thefiery Freddie Hubbard. Recorded live in Japan during the summer of 1979, this double album features Hancock and his group combining the funky groove of hard-bop with the seeming lawlessness of '70s fusion. No one player outshines another on this record, though many of the sparks that ignite the music come from drummer Tony Williams, who swings elegantly, but fills the gaps in between phrases with thunderous tom-tom rolls and piercing cymbal smashes, his playing spurring each soloist on to higher vistas. Even though most of this material is hard-hitting, there is some sensitivity on LIVE UNDER THE SKY, too. For example, bassist Ron Carter's tune "Tear Drop" is dark and subtle. On this selection, Carter's bass solo is abstract yet easy to follow. Towards the end of the chorus, the drums fade out, leaving room for Carter and Hancock to create an intimate musical dialogue. (Note: The entire second disc of the 2004 reissue consists of previously unreleased performances.) SKU: 6521322

8 Mile (More Music From 8 Mile/Explicit Version)
Packed with an enormity of excess material, Eminem's semi-autobiographical film yields MORE MUSIC FROM 8 MILE, the second compilation of music featured in Marshall Mathers' enormously successful movie debut. Although there's no further material fromthe controversial rapper featured on this collection, the track listing is far from being packed with mere throwaway cuts. Among the older songs that get trotted out are mini-classics by Mobb Deep ("Shook Ones"), Outkast ("Player's Ball"), the Notorious B.I.G. ("Juicy"), and Wu-Tang Clan ("C.R.E.A.M."). Method Man flies solo on "Bring Da Pain" before teaming with Mary J. Blige for "You're All I Need." Ol' Dirty Bastard also sticks around long enough to donate "Shimmy Shimmy Ya". Also contributing to this embarrassment of riches are Jr. Mafia ('Get Money"), Pharcyde ("Runnin") and Naughty By Nature ("Feel Me Flow"). SKU: 1078028

74 Jailbreak [Remastered]
This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser. AC/DC: Bon Scott (vocals); Angus Young, Malcolm Young (guitar); Cliff Williams (bass); Phil Rudd (drums). Recorded at Albert Studios, Sydney, Australia. Originally released on Atlantic (80178). Includes liner notes by Murray Engleheart. Although AC/DC achieved its greatest commercial success after the death of original vocalist Bon Scott (1980's BACK IN BLACK and 1981's FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK featured replacement Brian Johnson), fans showed that they had not forgotten Scott when DIRTY DEEDS was released in the early '80s for American fans. The album skyrocketed directly to the top of the Billboard charts. Like DIRTY DEEDS, the 1984 EP, '74 JAILBREAK, features tracks previously unavailable domestically. The anthem "Jailbreak" was issued as a single early on, and proves to be the highlight of '74 JAILBREAK (a promo video was even filmed that resurfaced with the EP's release). There are a couple of other early rockers, "You Ain't Got a Hold on Me" and "Show Business," an almost-instrumental ("Soul Stripper"), and a roughed-up take on the blues standard "Baby, Please Don't Go" as well. Fans ofBon Scott-era AC/DC should check out this short-but-solid collection of nearly forgotten songs. SKU: 1084953

Out Of Our Heads [SACD] [Remastered]
This is a Hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both Super Audio and regular CD players. The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, harmonica); Keith Richards (vocals, guitar); Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica, piano, organ); Bill Wyman (bass); Charlie Watts (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Ian Stewart (piano, organ, marimba); Jack Nitzsche (piano, organ, percussion). Engineers: David Hassinger, Ron Malo, Glyn Johns. Recorded in Hollywood, California, Chicago, Illinois & London, England. Includes liner notes by Andrew Loog Oldham. Early Stones recordings don'tget much better than this. Firmly established as celebrities, the band began to use the pandemonium they inspired as an artistic source. Nowhere is their initial reaction to fame and music business drama more apparent than in the humorous, mocking "The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man," in which the Stones effectively skewer the sleazier side of the record industry. Naturally, this will always be known as the album that features the original version of "Satisfaction," which would remain the band's signature tune throughout their career, but that's really just the tip of the iceberg. Equally effective as a Jagger-Richards distillation of rock and R&B is "The Last Time," a tune easily the equal of Bobby Womack's "It's All Over Now," which the Stones handily covered on 12 X 5. Standing out from the crowd is the harpsichord-driven, English folk-inspired "Play With Fire," a menacing minor key song full of subtly expressed psychological violence. This tune, a marked change of pace for the band, hinted at the stylistic variety they would later explore. SKU: 1076822

Kojak Variety [Remastered]
Personnel: Elvis Costello (vocals, electric guitar, harmonica); James Burton (guitar); Marc Ribot (guitar, banjo); Larry Knechtel (piano, Wurlitzer electric piano, Hammond organ); Jerry Scheff (bass); Jim Keltner, Pete Thomas (drums). Recorded at Blue Wave Studios, Barbados. Includes liner notes by Elvis Costello. Personnel: Elvis Costello (vocals, guitar); Marc Ribot (guitar, banjo); James Burton, Larry Knechtel (guitar); Jerry Scheff (piano, Hammond b-3 organ, bass guitar); Pete Thomas (bass guitar, drums); Jim Keltner (drums). Recording information: Blue Wave Studios, Barbados (1990). Costello was always something of a musical sponge, soaking up an eclectic bunch of influences and assimilating them into an original vision that was fed by tradition but pointed straight to the future. Here he pays tribute to the musical heroes of his youth, with cover versions of songs both obscure and familiar. The accent is on blues and R&B, as EC tackles James Carr's anguished, soulful "Pouring Water on a Drowning Man" and Willie Dixon's vibrant "Hidden Charms." Along the way, Elvis redefines some of his favorite tunes by radically recasting them. Dylan's "I Threw it All Away" become a soul torch ballad. The Louvin Brothers' "Must YouThrow Dirt in My Face" is turned into an R&B lament. Session monsters like Jim Keltner and James Burton inject the proper amount of grit into the proceedings, making this a surprisingly fresh-sounding walk through the American roots of one of Britain's finest singer-songwriters. While it may not seem on the surface that a pairing of the stalwart tenor Lovano and the edgy, energetic alto-ist Osby would produce such pleasing results, FRIENDLY FIRE is a testament to the great artistic adaptability of these two modern masters. Indeed, this session allows the most intimate qualities of the artists to come to the fore--which, in turn, pushes them to play outside their usual parameters. This is a highly enjoyable collaboration that sheds new light on the creative talents of the two. Lovano, the solid, robust traditionalist at the top of his field, takes on a little of the brashness of his younger counterpart with cuts like the quirky "The Wild East." Likewise,Osby's modern urban energy is tempered with a traditional swagger on swinging tracks like Dolphy's "Serene" and bluesy "Truth Be Told." Of course, it is always an added treat to hear an interpretation of a classic like the sultry "Monk's Mood" on a milestone session such as this. However, the most spectacular tracks of the session come with a pairing of sopranos on the drum feature "Idris" and a staggering display of dexterity on the closing "Alexander The Great." His Hand In Mine
Cassette available on RCA (3935). NOTES: During his lifetime, Elvis Presley recorded three gospel albums and a four-song gospel EP. Presley's first full-length gospel album, HIS HAND IN MINE, sticks close to the quartet-style gospel singing Elvis loved as a youngster in Memphis. In fact, most of the arrangements on HIS HAND IN MINE mimic arrangements used by two of Elvis' favorite groups, the Statesmen and the Memphis-based Blackwood Brothers. The influence of such black gospel quartets as the Swan Silvertones and the Golden Gate Quartet, whom Elvis would have known through radio broadcasts, can also be heard on many numbers. As on all recordings inspired by the musical enthusiasm of his youth, Elvis shines on HIS HAND IN MINE, singing with breathtaking passion and dexterity. The first twelve songs on this disc, all classics of the genre, constitutethe album as it was originally released in 1960. RCA subsequently added three tracks to the CD: "It is No Secret," originally released on Elvis' 1957 PEACE IN THE VALLEY EP; a 1967 recording of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "You'll Never Walk Alone"; and "Who Am I," recorded in 1969. Fantasia 2000 [Remastered]
FANTASIA 2000 was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture,Television or Other Visual Media. The new FANTASIA is an extension of the original, which Walt Disney initially conceived as a work in progress. This time, one of the eight sequences mating animation with classical music favorites is a holdover from the 1940 version, specifically Mickey Mouse in a dramatization of Dukas' impressionist tone poem "The Soceror's Apprentice" (the old Leopold Stowkowski soundtrack has been replaced by a digital recording of James Levine conducting the Chicago Symphony). New sequences have been animated for excerpts from Beethoven's "Symphony No. 5," Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue," Respighi's "The Pines of Rome," and four others, including a clever Peter Schickele (a.k.a. P.D.Q. Bach) pastiche of all four of Elgar's "Pomp and Circumstance" marches. Classical purists may balk at the musical abbreviations, but--given the shortened attention spans that are the hallmark of the MTV era--a little of a good thing is clearly preferable to nothing. Ragpicker's Dream, The
Personnel includes: Mark Knopfler (vocals, guitar); Richard Bennett (guitar); Paul Franklin (pedal steel); Glen Duncan (violin); Mike Henderson (harmonica); Jim Cox (piano, Hammond organ); Guy Fletcher (keyboards, background vocals); Glenn Worf (bass); Chad Cromwell (drums); Jimmy Nail, Tim Nealy (background vocals). The low-key nature of Mark Knopfler's third solo album (discounting soundtracks) won't be a surprise to those who are familiar with its fine predecessor. The biggest change from SAILING TO PHILADELPHIA is the focus on traditional/roots styles. Throughout much of RAGPICKER's dream, Knopfler comes on like a one-man Harry Smith's Anthology, touching on folk, country, and blues. As often as not, however, he brings it closer to home with UK folk flavoring, as on the opening "Why Aye Man." He also displays more of a sense of humor here, on the old-timey "Quality Shoe" and the western swing number "Daddy's Gone to Knoxville." The title track sounds like it could have come off the first Tom Waits album, and several cuts here wouldn't sound out of placeon any given Richard Thompson recording. Though one of Knopfler's consistent faults remains his tendency to drag things on for too long, his husky, intimate singing is effectively understated and he shows a healthy disdain for guitar showmanship that's remarkable considering his prodigious six-string abilities. Slightly more downshifted and rootsy than PHILADELPHIA, RAGPICKER'S DREAM nonetheless serves as its worthy companion piece. SKU: 1075545

Band Of Gypsys (Live At Fillmore East) [Remastered]
Personnel: Jimi Hendrix (electric guitar, vocals); Billy Cox (bass); Buddy Miles (drums, vocals). Recorded live at the Fillmore East, New York, New York on December 31, 1969. Includes liner notes by John McDermott. Following the breakup of the Experience, Hendrix took a sabbatical in Woodstock, New York, hooked up with bassist Billy Cox, his old Air Force running mate, and began jamming with a wide variety of musicians, including R&B drummer Buddy Miles. Hendrix had become self-conscious about his image as a showman and rocker, and about the limitations of thrashing through the same repertoire night after night. BAND OF GYPSYS was an attempt by Hendrix to redefine himself, and marked a slight return to his roots in R&B and the blues, accompanied by a solid, groove-oriented rhythm section. During their brief tenureas a band, Band Of Gypsys performed New Year's Eve at the Fillmore East, and this live recording captures some of Hendrix's most monumental solos, particularly his long, intensely emotional improvisation on "Machine Gun" and his pithy blues work on "Who Knows." Buddy Miles's "Them Changes" illustrates Hendrix's mastery of funk, while "Message Of Love" and "Power Of Soul" demonstrate Jimi's remarkable ability to provide a simultaneous rhythm accompaniment and melodic counterpoint to his vocals, in the blues tradition of Robert Johnson. Interstellar Space
Before track 1 there is a fragment of music from a sound check and two false starts of "Jupiter Variation." You must rewind from track 1 to hear them. Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone, bells); Rashied Ali (drums). Producer: John Coltrane. Reissue producer: Bryan Koniarz. Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on February 22, 1967. Includes liner notes by Francis Davis. Digitally remastered by Kevin Reeves (Universal Mastering Studios-East). These provocative duets were recorded right in between the two quartet sessions which yielded Coltrane's swan song, EXPRESSION. INTERSTELLAR SPACE is suffused with the searching fervor which distinguished Coltrane's conclusive works. Coltrane and Ali come on like a roller-coaster ride to Valhalla, playing as if their lives depended on it. The level of technical brinkmanship and emotional intensity is amazing--all the more so when you consider that Trane would be dead of liver cancer just four monthslater. Faced with one's own mortality, even the most faithful of servants--from Job to Jesus--must finally ask...why? With so much left to accomplish, it's unlikely Trane meant to leave his legacy on such a suspended note. But with time running out, INTERSTELLAR SPACE finds Coltrane contemplating the cosmos in all its raging complexity and infinite wonder. Lashed to the foretop of his crystal ship, Trane stares defiantly into the teeth of the storm, as Rashied Ali's rolling, windswept rhythmic pulse provides him with an elemental spark. And the tenor saxophonist responds with dramatic urgency, as if he were literally trying to break on through...to exist as pure spirit. Such is the biblical magnitude of these performances. While the heraldic rapture of "Venus" suggests the spiritual grace and acceptance of the psalms, "Mars," "Leo" and "Jupiter" admonish man in the babbling tongues of Revelations and the final days. Listen particularly to Coltrane's tone, as he evokes the eternal characteristics of the horn: its beckoning, portending, invocational quality. "Saturn" is the final frontier. Technically, Trane does impossible things on his horn. He creates cubist shapes and man-sized flourishes that are more akin to violin triple-stops, piano arpeggios and drum rolls than the tenor saxophone, manipulating multiphonics and overtones to speak in three registers simultaneously--every note touched with a human cry. And yes, that is a hint of swing you hear coming through the outer rings, and an echo of "Chasin' The Trane" peeking through the meteor shower. It's an appropriate metaphor, because John Coltrane never stopped pursuing rainbows, which is why listeners will be discovering his music a thousand years from now. SKU: 1035605

Driving Rain
Includes special bonus track "Freedom," as performed at The Madison Square Garden Concert in New York City in tribute to those who died in the WTC disaster. Personnel includes: Paul McCartney (vocals, guitar, piano, bass); James McCartney (guitar, percussion); Rusty Anderson (guitar, background vocals); Ralph Morrison (violin); Gabe Dixon (keyboards, background vocals); Abe Laboriel, Jr. (drums, percussion, background vocals); David Kahne (programming). Recorded at Henson Recording Studio, Los Angeles, California. Who would have guessed that more than three decades after the Beatles breakup, Paul McCartney--often typecast as the least daring of the group--would be turning out some ofthe most aggressive, forthright music of any of his peers. DRIVING RAIN's predecessor RUN DEVIL RUN was an energetic romp through '50s rockabilly tunes, and here McCartney takes the vital spirit engendered on that album and applies to a batch on new compositions. The opening track "Lonely Road" is a hard-hitting blues-rocker driven by gritty guitar and soulful vocals. The graceful ballads "From a Lover to a Friend" and "I Do" make fine use of McCartney's Beatles-era harmonic vocabulary. The sensual insinuations of the R&B groove on "Tiny Bubble" suggest vintage Al Green updated with hip-hop influenced rhythms. "About You" and the closing cut "Rinse the Raindrops" are driven by the kind of cutting guitar and fevered keyboards that will be most familiar to fans of "She's a Woman" and "I'm Down" from Macca's golden age. This is the first batch of new songs McCartney released after the death of his wife Linda, and one can hear him going through the whole cycle of coping, from grief to anger, through understanding, and finally acceptance. Those moods color the songs here with very visceral emotions and infectious humanity. SKU: 1067936

Lethal Injection [Remastered] [PA]
Personnel includes: Ice Cube (rap vocals); George Clinton (vocals); K-Dee. Producers include: Sir Jinx, Laylaw & Derrick McDowell, QD III, Brian G, Ice Cube. In 1993, Ice Cube released his third solo album, LETHAL INJECTION. By this time, the dominance of the West Coast rap scene had started to fade, as East Coast hip-hop artists like the Wu Tang Clan and the Notorious B.I.G. started to pull listeners away from the left coast. Hanging tough, Ice Cube released another masterful performance with LETHAL INJECTION. Tracks like "You Know How We Do It" and "Ghetto Bird" are deep-rooted in the classic West Coast sound and bounce. Filled with funk and smooth synth pads, LETHAL INJECTION is an album sometimes overlooked in the lengthy careerof Ice Cube. Check out "Bop Gun (One Nation)," on which funk master George Clinton himself makes an appearance. Some of the album's other excellent tracks include "Make It Ruff, Make It Smooth" (featuring K-Dee), "Really Doe," and "Down for Whatever." SKU: 1081539
