Masquerade
Personnel includes: Wyclef Jean (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards); Melky Sedeck (vocals, keyboards); Sharissa, Tom Jones, Claudette Ortiz (vocals); Governor, Prolific, M.O.P., Miri, Ja Rah Rah, Bumpy Knuckles (rap vocals); Eric Edwards (spoken vocals); Robert Aaron (saxophone, keyboards); Teflon (keyboards, background vocals); Shea Taylor (keyboards); Cory Rooney (string synthesizer); Jerry "Wonder" Duplessis (bass); Donald Guillaume (drums). Producers include: Wycef Jean, Jerry "Wonder" Duplessis, Melky Sedeck, Teflon, Ed Roc. Recorded at Platinum Sound, The Hit Factory, New York, New York; Record Plant, Los Angles, California; Hans Tonstudios, Berlin, Germany. Continuing to build on a wildly eclectic solo career that's taken him far beyond the success of The Fugees, Wyclef Jean uses his third album MASQUERADE to weave a message of social consciousness laced with hard-edged hip-hop nuances. Utilizing the concept of these tracks emanating from the fictitious pirate radio station HOT 93.1, Jean decries selling crack as a way out of poverty ("Peace God"), pays tribute to his recently deceased father (the reggae-driven "WarNo More") and life in the projects ("PJs," featuring Governor and Prolific). Wyclef's interest in a broad range of music finds him giving props to Biggie, Tupac, Aaliyah, and victims of 9/11 with Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door," turning Frankie Valli's "Oh What A Night" into an updated party jam and loving the ladies alongside Tom Jones on a waltz-like "Pussycat." The Haitian singer-songwriter teams with City High's Claudette Ortiz on the soulful original "Two Wrongs," gets thuggish and ruggish with Butch Cassidy and Sharissa on "Keep It Gangsta" and throws down with Brooklyn's hard-core M.O.P. on the stripped-down title cut. The only MASQUERADE perpetuated with this progressive mix of R&B, rock, and rap is that of Wyclef Jean being an easily pigeonholed pop artist. SKU: 1073856

It's Only Rock 'n' Roll
The Rolling Stones: Mick Jagger (vocals, guitar); Keith Richards (vocals, guitar, bass); Mick Taylor (guitar, bass, synthesizer, congas, background vocals); Bill Wyman (synthesizer, bass); Charlie Watts (drums). Additional personnel: Billy Preston (piano, Clavinet); Ian Stewart, Nicky Hopkins (piano); Kenny Jones (drums);Ray Cooper (percussion); Charlie Jolly (tabla); Ed Leach (cowbell); Willy Weeks, Blue Magic (background vocals). Recorded at Musicland Studios, Munchen, Germany. Digitally remastered by Bob Ludwig (Gateway Mastering Studios). After years of building off their rhythm and blues credentials, the title IT'S ONLY ROCK & ROLL insinuates a lowbrow rock aesthetic, but on this album the Stones mixed rock's aggression with an unparalleled appreciation for soul music. In homage to the black soul artists who originally inspired the Rolling Stones as an early-'60s R&B cover band, IT'S ONLY ROCK & ROLL is not only rock. From their joyous cover of the Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud To Beg" to "Time Waits For No One," Mick Jagger boldly duplicates the feel of James Brown's early singles. The Stones gave a twist to their R&B roots--"Fingerprint File" is heavily funk-based, sounding more like Isaac Hayes' "Shaft" than "Satisfaction." By 1974, the Stones were in a state of flux. Unsatisfied by his low place on the totem pole, Mick Taylor's participation is minimal, and the album relies more on Keith's guitar than on previous albums. Ronnie Wood's increasing involvement with the band is obvious--the song "It's Only Rock & Roll" started as a demo for Wood's then-in-progress solo album, but became his first contribution to the band. Musically, IT'S ONLY ROCK & ROLL is a portrait of a band in transition. SKU: 5059749

Elemental Soul
Personnel: Marlena Shaw (vocals); Stanley Turrentine (tenor saxophone); Dave Hazeltine (piano); Barnaby Finch (keyboards); Earl May (acoustic bass); Terry Miller (electric bass); Jerry Jones (drums); Michael Spiro (percussion). Recorded at Sound On Sound, New York, New York from January 20 to 21, 1997; Music Annex, Menlo Park, California from March 10 to 11, 1997. Includes liner notes by Andrew Rowan. Few jazz singers today are able to communicate across a broad stylistic range with the ease and authenticity of the dazzling Marlena Shaw. Featuringa rock-solid band--with help from tenor sax master Stanley Turrentine on three tracks--ELEMENTAL SOUL moves seamlessly through sultry ballads, blues-drenched numbers, and R&B grooves which break unexpectedly into buoyant swing. Shaw's voice is in top form throughout, as she handles the straight-ahead numbers with technical proficiency and the ballads with sensitivity and feeling. All the while she injects her characteristic bluesiness into everything she sings. Of particular interest are her renditions of venerated jazz standards like "How Deep Is The Ocean?," "Round Midnight," and "My Old Flame." These songs are usually treated with more reverence but considerably less energy and verve. Here they demonstrate--as does the album as a whole--how Shaw's diverse musical sensibilities meld to create a sound unmistakably her own. SKU: 1009904

Singles Collection, The
Recorded between 1964 & 1969. The Zombies found chart fame in 1964 with their very first single, "She's Not There," and went on to influence countless groups on both sides of the Atlantic. Fronted by ace keyboard player Rod Argent and Colin Blunstone, a singer with a breathy voice guaranteed to make the little girls swoon, St Alban's finest played a brand of intelligent pop music (how the pressloved their 50 O-levels!). Essentially a singles band, the Zombies consistently issued quality pop sides that, although they may not have set the charts alight, were certainly testament to the musicianship and vocal talent within the group. This complete collection of Zombies' singles is presented in the original mono for reasons of authenticity (later stereo mixes lacking essential overdubs were created without the group's input). "She Does Everything for Me" and "Just Out of Reach," its flashy organ solo worthy of Alan Price, show the Zombies at their upbeat best. The fragile "The Way I Feel Inside" is the pick of their sensitive side. File ODESSEY AND ORACLE's magnificent opener "Care of Cell 44" under "Singles That Should Have Made It." The same goes for most of this fine collection. SKU: 1029132

Up For A Bit With The Pastels
Remastered version of this Glasgow band's debut album from 1987. 'Up For A Bit...' confirmed their position as leading lights of the 'C86' scene (named after an NME compilationtape). In retrospect the album was a shot in the arm for the Scottish music scene and without them it's unlikely we would have had Primal Scream, Teenage Fanclub or that Creation Records would have become so influential. One Day Remains
Alter Bridge: Mark Tremonti (vocals, guitar); Myles Kennedy (vocals); Brian Marshall (bass instrument); Scott Phillips (drums). Recording information: The Sound Studios, Atlanta, Georgia; Empty Studios, Orlando, Florida. Soon after the demise of Creed was made public to the world, guitarist Mark Tremonti, drummer Scott "Flip" Phillips, and returning bassist Brian Marshall announced they would form a new band. Enter singer Myles Kennedy of the fiercely underrated Mayfield Four, also known for his cameo in the movie ROCK STAR. Like that film's main character, Kennedy picks up the torch tossed aside by a departing frontman, leading to Alter Bridge's debut, ONE DAY REMAINS. The chemistry of the group on this album is an undeniable force. While inevitable shadows of Creed cast themselves across "Broken Wings" and "Open Your Eyes," the bulk of new material is fresher and stronger than much of that ensemble's work. "The End Is Here" and the title track, in particular, showcase the band's strengths, boasting a musical depth and songwriting craft that seemed beyond the reach of Alter Bridge's previous incarnation. Tremonti plays with renewed fire and conviction, while Kennedy's emotive tenor glides above with soulful ease. Named by Tremonti for a personal symbol of crossing into the unknown, Alter Bridge does so with reverence for the past and an even keener sense of thefuture. SKU: 6570752

Life Less Ordinary, A
Producers include: Beck, The Dust Brothers, Peter Collins, Rick Smith, Wally Gagel. From the same team of filmmakers who brought the world TRAINSPOTTING, A LIFE LESS ORDINARY also boasts a cutting edge soundtrack, filled with titles steeped ina profound understanding of the culture around which the film revolves. In place of UK-based, decadent raves, this offbeat romantic comedy favors tracks reflecting its sprawling, more romantic, American setting and theme. Quirky and playful, it opens with none other than Beck, whose "Deadweight" is a masterful mix of technology and schmaltz. Keeping time to the film's fast-paced action, modern acts such as Luscious Jackson ("Love Is Here") and Prodigy ("Full Throttle") contribute high-energy rockers, while Elvis, Bobby Darin, and the retro-sounding Squirrel Nut Zippers provide a cultural backdrop. The film's more tender side is expressed by the soundtrack's predominantly mid-tempo showing: Ash and Underworld slow down without losing their heaviness, while breezy tracks by R.E.M. and Folk Implosion round out this hip, exciting tale of romance, kidnapping, and heavenly intercession. Bride Stripped Bare, The [Remastered]
Personnel: Bryan Ferry (vocals); Waddy Wachtel (guitar, background vocals); Neil Hubbard (guitar); Mel Collins (saxophone); Martin Drover (trumpet); Ann Odell, Steve Nye (electric piano); Herbie Flowers (acoustic bass); Alan Spencer, John Wetton (bass); Rick Marotta, Preston Heyman (drums). All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology. A concept album of sorts, inspired in part by Brian Ferry's highly public breakup with supermodel Jerry Hall, THE BRIDE STRIPPED BARE features songs whose view of romance is, unsurprisingly, a tad bleaker than previous. The singer's persona here is less lounge lizard than the sort of guy who drives around L.A. in the rain ("Can't Let Go"), hoping to wipe out on Dead Man's Curve. A strong batch of originals is on offer here, which, thanks in part to guitarist Waddy Wachtel, lean more toward the West Coast studio rock of Jackson Browne or Warren Zevon than is usual for Ferry. There are also acouple of covers that reinforce the bleak breakup theme, including what must be the most morose version of Sam and Dave's "Hold On (I'm Coming)" ever recorded. Not necessarily Ferry's best album, but certainly his most human. SKU: 1025418

Sensual World, The
Personnel: Kate Bush (vocals, piano, keyboards); Trio Bulgarka (vocals); Del Palmer (guitar, percussion, bass); Alan Murphy, David Gilmour (guitar); Donal Lunny (bouzouki); Paddy Bush (mandolin, tupan, valiha, whips); John Sheahan (fiddle); Nigel Kennedy (violin, viola); Jonathan Williams (cello); Alan Stivell (Celtic harp); Davey Spillane (Uillean pipes, whistles); John Giblin, Mick Karn, Eberhard Weber (bass); Stuart Elliot, Charlie Morgan (drums); Balavescu String Quartet. Engineers: Del Palmer, Kevin Killen, Andrew Boland. Recorded at Windmill Lane Studio, Dublin, Ireland; The Angel Studio and Abbey Road, London, England. THE SENSUAL WORLD will appeal to those who like their pop seasoned with some world music. During the '80s, some of Kate Bush's most successful collaborations were those with Peter Gabriel ("Games Without Frontiers," "Don't Give Up"), and Gabriel's habit of appropriating world music must have certainly rubbed off. THE SENSUAL WORLD combines the best of Kate Bush's jazzier elementswith contributions by some of the most accomplished musicians in the world. Featured artists include violinist Nigel Kennedy, Davey Spillane, Trio Bulgarka, Eberhard Weber, and her brother, multi-instrumentalist Paddy Bush. THE SENSUAL WORLD covers familiar Kate Bush territory--love, growing up, and the mystery of life. Kate produced THE SENSUAL WORLD with orchestra arrangements by Michael Kamen. Standout tracks include the title track, which was adapted from Joyce's ULYSSES, as well as "Love and Anger" and "Walk Straight Down the Middle." An added treat is "This Woman's Work," a song featured in John Hughes' movie SHE'S HAVING A BABY. A commercially ignored CD from an unusually talented performer. SKU: 1006627

Broken Arrow
Neil Young & Crazy Horse: Neil Young (vocals, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, piano); Poncho Sampedro (vocals, electric guitar); Billy Talbot (vocals, bass, tambourine); Ralph Molina (vocals, drums, percussion). Engineers: Greg Archilla, Tim Mulligan. Recorded at Plywood Analog, Redwood City, California and live at Old Princeton Landing, Princeton-By-The-Sea, California. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. BROKEN ARROW was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. BROKEN ARROW is the third straight album on which Neil Younghas splattered loud electric-guitar notes all over his folk-rock melancholy. You'd have to go back to Young's amazing mid-1970s records to find a similar streak, and you'd have to go back just as far to find Young in a groove this consistent, this good. In his '90s incarnation, Young seems to be upping the ante each go-round. It's as if he's completely enveloped in his own noise, and taking great pleasure in seeing just how much he can get away with. The first three songs on BROKEN ARROW are nearly a half-hour long between them, and they reach that length through long, scratchy, meandering solos that evoke both jazz and punk-rock (think Sonic Youth) in their simultaneous bid to be transcendent and noisy. In "Loose Change," Young solos for a miraculous six-and-a-half minutes over a single chord. By the end of the third song, Young appears emotionally spent, desperate to break the mood. The second half of BROKEN ARROW consists of comparatively light and compact electric folk-rock songs, a cosmic acoustic number and an odd little live recording of bluesman Jimmy Reed's "Baby What You Want Me To Do." It's a potpourri that belies the strength of songwriting and performance that this wayward rocker has carried into middle age. "I'm still living the dream we had/For me it's not over," he sings over a haze of guitar distortion in "Big Time." At age 50, in fact, he sounds as if he's just starting. SKU: 1000217

Mystery Girl
Personnel: Roy Orbison (vocals, guitar); Mike Campbell (guitar, mandolin, bass, background vocals); Billy Burnette, Rick Vito (guitar, background vocals); David Rhodes, Steve Cropper (guitar); Benmont Tench (strings, piano); Mike Utley (strings); Jim Horn (horns); Mitchell Froom (piano); Al Kooper (organ); Howie Epstein (bass, background vocals); T-Bone Wolk, Boell Neidlinger, Jerry Scheff, David Miner (bass); Jim Keltner, Micky Curry, Ray Cooper (drums); Phil Jones, Ian Wallace (drums, percussion); Gary Coleman (percussion); Barbara Orbison, Roy Kelton Orbison (background vocals). Producers: Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, Mike Campbell, Barbara Orbison, T-Bone Burnett, Bono. Engineers include: Richard Dodd, Phil McDonald, Kevin Killen. What a comeback MYSTERY GIRL could have been for Roy Orbison, who died of a heart attack two months before it was released. Rivaling his best early works, MYSTERY GIRL added several new standards to Orbison's great body of work, including the Jeff Lynne-produced hit "You Got It," the haunting, U2-penned "She's A Mystery To Me," and Elvis Costello's dry ballad "The Comedians." Orbison's powerful, operatic voice remained true right through these, his final recordings, and his style effectively carried over to modern-day sensibilities. When he hits those high notes, you'll still find yourself holding onto your seat. SKU: 1006774

Recorded Fall 1961
Personnel: Stan Getz (tenor saxophone); Bob Brookmeyer(valve trombone); Steve Kuhn (piano); John Neves (bass); Roy Haynes (drums). Recorded at Nola Studios, New York, New York in September 1961. Originally released on Verve (8418). Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff and Loren Schoenberg. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Stan Getz is one of the most influential tenor saxophonists of his generation. His sweet, romantic, even gossamer tone was derived from the style of his predecessor Lester Young. However, Getz incorporated new post-bop melodic vocabulary and phrasing into his playing, setting him apart from many of the Young clones of the '40s and '50s. Similarly, Bob Brookmeyer's playing is as unique as his instrument. One of the few purveyors of the valve trombone, Brookmeyer's takes an approach that's lyrical and often marked by shapely legato phrases that read like a storybook. Needless to say, these two jazz giants complement one another on all six tracks. RECORDED FALL 1961 is made up of three standards, "Nice Work If You Can Get It," "Love Jumped Out," and "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square." The odd 33-measure structure of "Nice Work" is retained throughout the solos while a recurring Charleston rhythm adds charm to "Love Jumped Out." In addition, Brookmeyer's three compositions each have a distinct and refreshing musical design. SKU: 1069038

Baja Sessions, The
Personnel: Chris Isaak (vocals, guitar); Rowland Salley (vocals, bass); Kenny Dale Johnson (vocals, drums); Hershel Yatovitz (guitar); Frank Martin, Jimmy Pugh, Mark Needham,Joni Haastrup. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. For all its lonesome balladry, BAJA SESSIONS sounds positively exultant after 1995's morose FOREVER BLUE. The title refers to the pastoral Mexican peninsula that gave Isaak the inspiration for this set of lush, glistening ballads. Lap steel guitars glide through songs whose sunny climate belies Isaak's sad-sack lyrical bent. Isaak plays down his neo-rockabilly side in favor of the romantic crooning that's made him an international hearthrob. Rather than writing an entire album's worth of songs to fit this mood, Isaak picked several cover tunes as well as a couple selections from his own back catalog, and interpreted them in a manner concordant with the lazy, summer-vacation-feel of the recording. Isaak pays tribute to a primary influence on his version of Roy Orbison's "Only The Lonely," and brings his sad-surfer-boy feel to the Hawaiian-tinged pop chestnut "Sweet Leilani." On this vivid aural postcard from a place where sorrow sits as comfortably as happiness in the noonday sun, one can almost see Isaak's hastily scrawled message: "Having a miserable time, wish you were here." Memory Of Trees, The
Solo performer: Enya (vocals, various instruments). THE MEMORY OF TREES won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album. These are specifically those trees held sacred by the Druids of ancient Irish mythology; but there is just enough ambiguity in the title of Enya's latest album to please her enthusiasts, who tend to interpret her hard-to-classify music in deeply personal ways.Enya's distinctive style--an ethereal, hypnotic sound based on orchestral synthesizer and piano work, with multiple vocal layers which turn Enya's voice into an angelic choir--stands out on THE MEMORY OF TREES. Saved by strong, simple melodies from being lumped in with other New Age, Enya never loses track of the heart of each song. While most of the material here is tinged with melancholy and mysticism, "Anywhere Is" is a joyous, spiritual anthem to confusion and indecision. And Enya's lyrics, written in English, Spanish, Latin and Gaelic by longtime collaborator Roma Ryan, are often equally enigmatic. It doesn't matter--this is a musical landscape, and the listener is taken there by Enya's unmistakable voice, then left there to enjoy the scenery. SKU: 1002715

Too Many Movies
Personnel includes: Michael Shelley, Francis MacDonald. East Coast denizens may know Shelley as the power-pop guru of hip New Jersey station WFMU, who lit up many a night with sets of Big Star, Raspberries, Shoes and more. It turns out that Shelley's influences, while not exactly worn on his sleeve, play a big part in his own music. TOO MANY MOVIES doesn't go for in-your-face hooks or layered vocal harmonies. Instead, it takes a scaled-down, downright unassuming approach to the pure pop formula. Winsomely melodic, clever but unpretentious, Shelley is the perfect antidote the too-hip hype of so many indie bands and electronica "pioneers. His simple, honest songs are simultaneously funny and poignant,as in the instant classic "Baby's in a Bad Mood Tonight." Occasionally they're just plain uproarious, like the dental rave-up "That's Where the Plaque Is." Buy with pride. SKU: 1055605

40 Famous Songs From The Musicals
Includes linernotes by William Hogeland. In the pre-rock & roll era, American popular song took its cue from Broadway musicals to an enormous extent. The great Tin Pan Alley songwriters who labored to bring a show to life were simultaneously creating the standards that would become the meat of pop music from the 1920s through the '50s. Like his peers, Frank Sinatra drew the bulk of his repertoire from this deep, reliable well, and that fact is highlighted on this collection of Sinatra tunes taken from shows both legendary (OKLAHOMA, SHOW BOAT) and more obscure (THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE, LOUISIANA PURCHASE). The sound quality on this two-disc collection leaves much to be desired, but the selection and performances are top-notch. Though discographical information is sketchy, these recordings hail from the early part of Sinatra's career, and its a joy to hear his graceful voice float along the elegant melodic arc of such standards as "Begin the Beguine" and "Someone to Watch Over Me." While Sinatra's original albums from this period are at no loss for Broadway-derived material, it's a nice conceptual turn to have so many of them gathered together as a whole. SKU: 4119317

Mudlark
Personnel includes: Leo Kottke, Larry Taylor. 1971's MUDLARK is one of Leo Kottke's earliest albums, and the first to fully integrate his uniquevocal style--he once famously described his froggy baritone as sounding like "geese farts on a foggy day"--with his stunning guitar wizardry. A classic of DIY folk-rock, MUDLARK is simply produced, beautifully arranged and clearly recorded. The performances sound live and intimate, whether on the delicate yet sturdy instrumentals or on vocal exercises like a surprisingly effective reworking of the Byrds' "Eight Miles High." Other highlights include the traditional folk tune "Cripple Creek" and the classical guitar showcase "Bourree." A version of Kim Fowley's bizarre "Monkey Lust" with the pop eccentric himself on vocals is one of Kottke's stranger efforts, but a respectful version of mentor John Fahey's "Poor Boy" is a nice touch. Ultimate Charlie Parker, The
Also available as part of a box set on Verve (543 078). Tracks selected by Jackie McLean. Personnel includes: Charlie Parker, Willie Smith (alto saxophone); Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Flip Phillips, Hank Ross, Pete Mondelo, Jose Madera (tenor saxophone); Stan Webb, Leslie Johnakins, Manny Albam (baritone saxophone); Mario Bauza, Buck Clayton, Al Porcino, Ray Wetzel, Al Killian, Howard McGhee, Paquito Davilla, Bobby Woodlen (trumpet); Will Bradley, Bill Harris (trombone); John LaPorta (clarinet); Mitch Miller (oboe); Irving Ashby (guitar); Hank Jones, Arnold Ross, Stan Freeman, Ken Kersey, Lou Stein (piano); Ray Brown, Curly Russell, Billy Hadnott, Roberto Rodriguez (bass); Buddy Rich, Shelly Manne, Lee Young (drums); Luis Miranda (congas); Machito (maracas). Producer: Norman Granz. Compilation producer: Richard Seidel. Recorded between 1946 and 1952. Includes liner notes by Jackie McLean and Bob Blumenthal. This is part of the Verve Ultimate Series. For its unique ULTIMATE series of compilations, Verve Records made the wise decision of letting jazz legends pick their favorite recordings bytheir favorite artists. For ULTIMATE CHARLIE PARKER, alto saxophonist and jazz educator Jackie McLean choose 11 excellent tracks from Parker's work for the legendary label. Given Parker's relatively small number of Verve sessions, McLean is necessarily limited, but his choices are inarguable. Included here are four tracks from Parker's legendary 1946 shows at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, including the breathtaking "I Got Rhythm" and the impossibly fleet-fingered "After You've Gone." There are two tracks from a December, 1947 session at Carnegie Hall, as well as the polyrhythmic "Mango Mangue," which was recorded in 1948 with Machito and his Afro-Cuban Orchestra. Perhaps best of all, there are four tracks from the magnificent, underrated CHARLIE PARKER WITH STRINGS sessions from 1952, including the definitive "April in Paris," perhaps Parker's final moment of true genius in a recording studio. Tempted And Tried
Steeleye Span's 15th album is yet anotherexcellent collection of rocked-up traditional-style British folk songs. While the group's later albums don't hold the surprise of earlier classics like HARK! THE VILLAGE WAIT or PLEASE TO SEE THE KING, they're nonetheless remarkable. The bell-toned voice of lead singer Maddy Prior is one of the most distinctive and wonderful in British folk, up there with Sandy Denny, Norma Waterson and Prior's occasional collaborator June Tabor. Prior's vocals dominate these 11 songs, but the distinctive fiddle of Peter Knight is equally impressive. Highlights here include the murder ballad "Jack Hall" and an impressive version of the hoary standby "The Fox." If you don't like Steeleye Span, TEMPTED AND TRIED won't change your mind, but fans should adore it. SKU: 5011100

Jumpin' Jive
Personnel includes: Joe Jackson (vocals, arranger, vibraphone); Dave Bitelli (clarinet, tenor saxophone, background vocals); Pete Thomas (alto saxophone, background vocals); Raul Oliviera (trumpet, background vocals); Nick Weldon (piano, background vocals); Graham Maby (bass, background vocals); Larry Tolfree (drums, backgroundvocals). Recorded at Basing Street Studios, London, England in May 1981. Includes liner notes by Joe Jackson. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Like his fellow Angry Young Man/New Wave archetype Elvis Costello, Jackson's musical abilities/interests were always too broad to be straightjacketed by pop-rock. The deep reggae grooves of 1980's criminally under-rated BEAT CRAZY were the first sign of this, and the following year's JUMPIN JIVE made that fact abundantly clear. Flouting commercial appeal, Jackson made an album that pays tribute to the jump blues of Louis Jordan, Cab Calloway, Louis Prima, etc. He dropped his guitar-based rock band for a six-man jazz combo. Jackson's reedy voice was never meant to challenge the chops of his heroes, so the sonic disparity isn't a factor. It's a pleasure to hear him reveling in the joys of a style decades old, but still capable of packing a punch. All the tunes he covers here are from the golden era of jump blues, most of them classics, and he plays it consistently straight, staying close to the original arrangements. At the time, there was no less commercial record he could have made, so it's ironic that after years out of print, the album would be reissued 18 years later due to the late-'90s swing revival. It's doubly ironic that JUMPIN' JIVE is more fun than that revival's leading lights. SKU: 1017735
