Smash
Offspring: Dexter Holland (vocals, guitar); Noodles (guitar, background vocals); Greg K (bass); Ron Welty (drums, background vocals). Additional personnel: Jason "Blackball" McLean (vocals). Recorded at Track Record, North Hollywood, California. All songs written by Offspring except "Killboy Powerhead" (The Didjits). Building off the success of its Orange County, California hardcore roots and a feature spot in snowboarding advertisements, Offspring is suddenly seeing more commercial success that it evercould have dreamed of when it was formed as yet another Southern California hard-core punk act in 1991. SMASH is a generous helping of guitar power-pop. The delightful Middle-Eastern surf guitar on "Come Out And Play" hides harsh sentiments in poppy guitar riffs. Singer Dexter Holland mocks the school systems that think the solution to school violence is to "keep them separated," to segregate rather than educate the kids about the dangers of carrying guns. As Holland advises his fans, "Hey pay no mind/If you're under eighteen you won't be doing any time." Offspring's power is in writing anthemic guitar rock that effortlessly slips from genre to genre. From the humorous ska-flavored "What Happened To You?" to the sing-along guitar riff in "No Self Esteem," SMASH is by no means a smash hit, but it has certainly gotten the exposure this one-time hardcore band deserves. Lucky Thirteen (Excursions Into Alien Territory)
Personnel includes: Neil Young (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, Synclavier, keyboards, bass, harmonica); Waylon Jennings (vocals); David Kirby (acoustic guitar); Ben Keith (guitar, saxophone); Danny Kortchmar (guitar, synthesizer, vocals), Ralph Mooney (pedal steel guitar); Rufus Thibodeaux, Gordon Terry (fiddle); Craig Hayes as "Vito Toledo," (baritone saxophone); John Fumo (trumpet); Claude Cailliet (trombone); Hargus "Pig" Robbins (piano); Larry Byrom (piano, vocals, trumpet); RickPalombi (piano, tambourine, vocals); Spooner Oldham (organ); Rick Rosas (bass); Karl Himmel, Chad Cromwell (drums); Steve Jordan (drums, vocals); Pam Rose, Janis Oliver-Gill, Mary Ann Kennedy, Gail Davies (background vocals). Crazy Horse: Frank "Pancho" Sampedro (guitar, keyboards); Billy Talbot (bass); Ralph Molina (drums). Producers: David Briggs, Elliot Mazer, Tim Mulligan, Ben Keith, Danny Kortchmar, Niko Bolas, Neil Young. Engineers: Elliot Mazer, Niko Bolas, Tim Mulligan, Dave Hewitt, Gary Long, Gene Eichelberger. Subtitled EXCURSIONS INTO ALIEN TERRITORY, LUCKY THIRTEEN is a compilation of material Young recorded during the '80s, a time when he was roaming all over the musical map in search of inspiration. Some of the more unusual byways traveled by Young included Gary Numan-flavored electro-pop ("Pressure,") traditional country ("Once An Angel") and rockabilly ("Get Gone.") The furthest out Young's adventurousness took him was on TRANS, an album in which use of the term avant-garde is an understatement. Strapping himself into a vocoder and diving headfirst into a bank of Synclaviers, Young came up with songs such as "Sample And Hold" and "Transformer Man," which are about as far away as you can get from the crunching guitar and gritty playing most identifiable with his '70s work. Despite the constant changing of musical gears that went on during the '80s, Neil Young's songwriting still maintained a cantankerous air. Whether he was deriding the selling out of musical ideals for commercial gain ("This Note's For You") or pointing out the failings of the late '60s counter-culture ("Hippie Dream,") Neil Young continued down his own path on all levels. Construction Time Again
Depeche Mode: David Gahan (vocals); Martin Gore (keyboards, synthesizer, background vocals); Andrew Fletcher, Alan Wilder (keyboards, synthesizer). Recorded at The Garden, London, England. Having proven his abilities as a pop craftsman on the previous year's A BROKEN FRAME, DM main songwriter MartinGore gets down to the business of developing a new sonic language for himself and his bandmates on CONSTRUCTION TIME. Earlier in its career, Depeche Mode tried to make its synthesizer-only arrangements seem warm and fuzzy, but here the band embraces the Kraftwerk-pioneered tradition of exploiting the synthesizer's inherent inorganic qualities for their intrinsic beauty. In addition to straying further from the poppy approach of previous albums, the group incorporates industrial-oriented sounds as an important part of the arrangements, lending an ominous, machine-like tone to many of the songs. The once-chipper group's growing disenchantment with the outside world begins to flower here as well, most notably on the anti-music biz observations of "Everything Counts." SKU: 1006004

Tallulah [ECD]
The Go-Betweens: Amanda Brown (vocals, guitar, violin, oboe, keyboards); Grant McLennan (vocals, guitar, piano); Robert Forster (vocals, guitar); Robert Vickers (bass, keyboards); Lindy Morrison (drums, programming). Additional personnel: El Tito (flamenco guitar); Audrey Riley (cello); Simon Fisher-Turner, Colin Lloyd-Tucker (background vocals). The fifth Go-Betweens album, TALLULAH (named after film actress Tallulah Bankhead), introduced afifth member to the band. Violinist Amanda Brown cemented the band's move toward the inclusion of strings that had begun with their last album. With this addition, the interplay between instruments and vocals is even more lush and pretty than ever, even on vaguely unsettling tracks like "The Clarke Sisters." Standouts include "Right Here," a pristine pop classic complete with soaring violins, a catchy chorus, and jangling guitars; "I Just Get Caught Out," a rocker propelled along a popping bass line; the beautiful "Bye Bye Pride," one of the band's more spectacular songs that captures a moment so well you can see it ("A white moon appears/Like a hole in the sky/The mangroves go quiet"), and "Hope Then Strife," with its spoken verses and sung choruses punctuated by Lindy Morrison's spare drumming and some gorgeous flamenco guitar. Arise Therefore
Palace Music includes: Will Oldham (vocals); David Grubbs (piano); Ned Oldham (bass, background vocals). A sticker appended to the packaging is the only thing identifying this as a Palace album. After this last official release by the "band," Will Oldham would become the solo artist he'd already been in everything but name. The mercurial songwriter/performer, fresh from the rocked-up triumph of VIVA LAST BLUES, reinvents himself yet again on ARISE. A uniformly placid sound is marked by the piano and organ of Gastr Del Sol's David Grubbs and a gloriously cheap-sounding drum machine that provides the only rhythm. Most of the songs find Oldham in an unmerciful mode of self-examination, as he cast aspersions on his own life as well as the lives of others. What makes ARISE work is that Oldham is also at his mostpoetic here, in an almost traditional sense, with lyrics full of archaic imagery and language. The music is appropriately stately, achieving just the right mix of tradition and invention. ARISE THEREFORE sounds like nothing else, and succeeds on its own terms. SKU: 4123062

Producers include: Glen Ballard, John Chelew, Nick Lowe, John Hiatt, Davey Faragher. Engineers include: Christopher Fogel, Larry Hirsch, Neil King. Includes liner notes by JohnHiatt. "Have A Little Faith In Me" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song. If there's any contemporary singer-songwriter deserving of the anthology treatment, it's John Hiatt. Not only has he created timeless works of passion and humor like BRING THE FAMILY and SLOW TURNING, he's provided career-turning hits for everyone from Bonnie Raitt to Buddy Guy. Here we get an overview of the Hiatt catalogue, and a glimpse at the breadth of Hiatt's compositional expertise. The simple, poignant piano-based ballad "Have a Little Faith in Me" kicks things off nicely. The churning, gutbucket rock & roll of the acerbic "Memphis in the Meantime" showcases Hiatt's ability to rock with humor. The panoramic "Child of the Wild Blue Yonder" is representative of Hiatt's later, more polished work. Throughout this collection, Hiatt's rough, endearingly quirky voice lends a valuable idiosyncracy to these lyrically inventive roots-rock gems, which incorporate, rock, pop, soul and country to create an accessible but intelligent sound that is uniquely John Hiatt. Without You I'm Nothing
If you wantan idea of where Britain's darlings Placebo are coming from, imagine Smashing Pumpkins taking on the poppier sections of the Spiritualized songbook. Even that doesn't quite capture the unique sound Placebo achieves on WITHOUT YOU I'M NOTHING, so here's another clue-the title is pretty self-explanatory. The character in these songs (for diplomacy's sake, we'll give Placebo the benefit of some creative distance) is pretty unimpressed with himself and his place in the world, and like Billy Corgan of the aforementioned Pumpkins, he isn't afraid to grouse about it in a high, keening tenor over aggressive guitar backing. Unlike the Pumpkins, Placebo are students of the art of pop songcraft, and many of the tunes here will stick with you even after just one listen. SKU: 1003298

Blues On The Bayou
Personnel: B.B. King (vocals, guitar); Leon Warren (guitar); Melvin Jackson (saxophone); Stanley Abernathy, James Bolden (trumpet); James Sells Toney (keyboards); Michael Doster (bass); Calep Emphrey Jr. (drums); Tony Coleman (percussion). Recorded at Dockside Studio, Maurice, Louisiana. Includes liner notes by B.B. King. BLUES ON THE BAYOU won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. Having just turned 73, B.B. King released BLUES ON THE BAYOU as a kind of retrospective look at 50 years of playing the blues. King produced BAYOU himself and recorded it ata remote studio in the heart of Lafayette, Louisiana with the band he'd been playing with for the past 10 years. A relaxed and well-oiled feeling is felt throughout this group of songs, some of which were newly written while others are older numbers that were dusted off and re-recorded specifically for these sessions. "Blues Boys Tune" and "Blues We Like" are solidly rendered King instrumentals and "I'll Survive" is a '50s nugget softly gilded by strings and horn charts punctuated by James Sells Toney's fluid piano playing. King's economical use of notes means that "Mean Ole World" becomes more than just a standard shuffle and "Blues Man" not only possesses a slow burn, but could easily become his trademark song. Digging deep into his considerable catalog, B.B. King shows impressive acumen towards life's potholes by pulling out numbers dealing with betrayal ("Broken Promise"), sassy, Louis Jordan-flavored relationship problems ("Shake It Up And Go"), jealousy ("Good Man Gone Bad") and despair ("If I Lost You," "Tell Me Baby"). All Change
Cast: John Power (vocals, guitar); Liam Tyson (guitar); Peter Wilkinson (bass); Keith O'Neill (drums). Additional personnel: Vincent Needham, Jonathan Stone (strings). Although the list of UK 60s retro pop groups is growing at a frightening rate, the amount of really good onesis becoming similarly unmanageable. How many ways can you skin a G, D, C, Am, F sequence and still have room for a middle eight? At least another 12 ways, judging by this album. They sound familiar, but on 'Sandstorm' the hook is theirs, not to forget the wah-wah break, which, although Hendrix-derived, is still of their own making. Songs such as 'Finetime' and 'Alright' are instantly appealing, inducing a nagging 'where have I have I heard it before' in the head. SKU: 1004775

Somebody Else Not Me
Includes liner notes by Elijah Wald. Originally released in 1969 but out of print for years before being reissued in 1999, SOMEBODY ELSE, NOT ME is one of Dave Van Ronk's most satisfying and artistically fruitful albums. The overall theme, as implied in the haunting, part-spoken title track, is history and its influences.Van Ronk has always been best known as an interpreter of other people's songs. In this collection, he covers songs by two of his contemporaries, Tom Paxton and Bob Dylan, that are tributes to artists who were influential on Paxton, Dylan, and Van Ronk. Paxton's "Did You Hear John Hurt" and Dylan's "Song For Woody" sound more universal and somehow even more personal in Van Ronk's exquisite interpretations. Elsewhere, Van Ronk covers Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer," Brownie McGhee's "Sportin' Life," and offers an astonishing, angry rendition of Woody Guthrie's "Pastures of Plenty" that's among his finest performances ever. Clouds In My Coffee
Personnel includes: Carly Simon, Frank Sinatra, PlacidoDomingo, James Taylor, Andreas Vollenweider (vocals); Danny Kortchmar (guitar). CLOUDS IN MY COFFEE 1965-1995 is a career retrospective that includes her greatest hits, new material, live tracks and previously unreleased recordings. Named after a key lyric in her career-defining song "You're So Vain," the three-disc CLOUDS IN MY COFFEE offers an excellent summation of the first three decades of Carly Simon's career. Interestingly, it doesn't engage in the usual historical revisionism concerning said career, and includes a few tracks from her pre-Elektra early years. Foregoing chronological order, the set includes one solid greatest hits disc, another of previously unreleased tracks and rarities, and a third of key album tracks. Some of the choices are a bit odd--nothing from the fine late-'70s album PLAYING POSSUM, for example--but the sequencing does the songs justice and the remastering job is outstanding. The highlight of the new material is a heartbreaking version of John Prine's "Angel From Montgomery" that's among Simon's best and most sensitive covers. Casual listeners might want to stick with one of the single-disc anthologies, but CLOUDS IN MY COFFEE is essential for fans. SKU: 5046190

Cryptic Writings
Megadeth: Dave Mustaine, Marty Friedman, David Ellefson, Nick Menza. Recorded at The Tracking Room, Nashville, Tennessee. All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology. "Trust" was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. While Metallica was busy climbing to the top of the thrash-metal heap, Dave Mustaine and Megadeth were quietly carvingout a niche for themselves, distinguished by intelligent songwriting and a progressive approach that avoids erratic genre-jumping. Mustaine's breadth of song subjects continues to expand on CRYPTIC WRITINGS, with topics ranging from stalkers ("I'll Get Even") and drug addiction ("Use The Man") to Armageddon wrapped in a cloak of punk anarchy ("The Disintegrators") Some of CRYPTIC WRITINGS' cooler touches include the electric sitar on "A Secret Place" and the acoustic guitar, mellotron and synths on the multi-part opening track "Trust". Throughout the album, guitarist Marty Friedman displays the exponential growth his playing has undergone since his days with Cacophany. His impressive sense of rhythm comes to the fore on "Almost Honest" and "Have Cool, Will Travel." SKU: 1006179

Like A Prayer
Personnel: Madonna (vocals, keyboards); Chester Kamen, David Williams, Dann Huff, Bruce Gaitsch, Marcos Loya (guitar); Larry Corbett (cello); Patrick Leonard, Jai Winding, Stephen Bray, Geary Lanier (keyboards); Joseph Mayer, Richard Todd (French horn); Guy Pratt, Randy Jackson (bass); Jonathan Moffett, Jeff Porcaro, John Robinson (drums); Luis Conte, Paulinho da Costa, Sandra Crouch (percussion); Niki Harris, Marilyn Martin, Donna Delory, Ali Nadirah, Lynne Fiddmont, Rose Banks, Marcos Loya, Andrae Crouch Choir (background vocals). Producers: Madonna, Pat Leonard, Stephen Bray, Prince. Recorded at Johnny Yuma Recording, Burbank, California; Saturn Sound, Sherman Oaks, California; Ocean Way Recording, Los Angeles, California; Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, Minnesota. Madonna's exquisite sense of the pop song, and suitably stylish aesthetic to match, was pushed to the hilt for 1989's LIKE A PRAYER. Sporting a bare midriff and a stylishly dark bob, she immediately set the Moral Majority up in arms with the title track's video, depicting, among other things, a black Christ and a hillside ofburning crosses. The song, however, was as strong and as dazzling as the images. Before deciding on utilizing a constant barrage of public sexuality over songs, Madonna made great records. Highlights here include the sexy bubble-gum of "Cherish" and the delightful "Express Yourself." Great pop to go. SKU: 1004868

Producers: Joni Mitchell, Larry Klein, Thomas Dolby, Mike Shipley. In the '80s, Joni Mitchell took on the role of a sophisticated pop artist. This move, with releases like 1985's DOG EAT DOG, brought the singer a great deal of criticism from those who felt she had betrayed her folk origins. What those critics failed to realize, however, was that not only was Mitchell still t |
