Giant Steps [Digipak] [Remastered]
The 1998 reissue of GIANT STEPS contains all the original tracks and liner notes plus additional tracks and rare photos. Personnel: John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Tommy Flanagan, Wynton Kelly, Cedar Walton (piano); Paul Chambers (bass); Art Taylor, Lex Humphries, Jimmy Cobb (drums). Producer: Nesuhi Ertegun. Reissue producer: Bob Carlton, Patrick Milligan. Recorded at Atlantic Studios, New York, New York on April 1, May 4 and December 2, 1959. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot & Dan Hersch (DigiPrep). John Coltrane's maiden voyage for Atlantic Records was the fulfillment of all the potential he'd demonstrated with Miles, Monk and on his own Prestige recordings. Recorded in May 1959 (one month after completing Davis' KIND OF BLUE), GIANT STEPS is Coltrane's first recital to feature nothing but his own original compositions, and is the culmination of his obsessive foray into harmony. By taking all of the notes in a chord--and trying to find every possible inversion and relevant substitution--the saxophonist was forced to develop a complex new form of melodic phrasing that enabled him to rhythmically crowd every permutation into a single phrase. The effect is not only technically impressive, but an emotional marvel as well. On equestrian events such as the up-tempo title tune and "Countdown," Coltrane blazes through the changes with a torrential effusion of ideas, each phrase connected to the next with unerring logic and a sublime sense of symmetry. Every note in the lower, middle and upper register of his horn is articulated with power, precision and a variety of expressive timbres. His manipulation of overtones and multiphonics imparts a hair-raising vocal immediacy to his cry, and each solo culminates in a stirring emotional catharsis. This is bebop to the tenth power. But the joy of Coltrane'sart is not predicated on its intellectual dexterity. The charming stop-time cadences of "Syeeda's Song Flute" depict an upbeat, child-like disposition, inspiring a particularly celebratory Coltrane solo. The vamping figures of "Cousin Mary" and "Mr. P.C." lead to solos permeated with blues fervor. And of course, there's "Naima" (written for John's first wife), one of the saxophonist's tenderest, most enduring themes, with a melody that floats above Tommy Flanagan's serene chordal colors like a solitary cloud at dusk. WWF - Forceable Entry
For over 18 years, Jim Johnston has been the composer behind the entrance themes for a host of legendary World Wrestling Federation grapplers. Now that all the major wrestling federations (World Class Wrestling aka WCW and Extreme Championship Wrestling aka ECW) are under the WWF umbrella, FORCEABLE ENTRY gathers together the theme songs of the biggest wrestlers from each federation and has them interpreted by a wide array of aggro-rock names. Not surprisingly, this remains an all boy's club even when it comes to the entry songs for female participants like Stacy Kiebler (Kid Rock's jittery, rapid-fire cover of ZZ Top's "Legs") and Lita (Boy Hits Car's Middle Eastern-flavored "Lovefurypassionenergy"). Amidst the screaming guitars, pounding rhythms and the occasionalswarm of turntable scratching of interpreted Johnston cuts are original contributions by Marilyn Manson (a WWF Remix of the militaristic "The Beautiful People"), Rob Zombie (the relentless "Never Gonna Stop") and Monster Magnet (a howling "Live For The Moment"). Otherwise it's Sevendust pouring sheets of distorted guitar and thumping grooves into "Break The Walls Down," Saliva transforming "Turn The Tables" into a dirge and Disturbed jump-starting "Glass Shatters" with waves of crunchy riffs. Brighten The Corners
Pavement: Stephen Malkmus, Mark Ibold, Spiral Stairs, Bob Nastanovich, Steve West. Pavement's fourth proper LP seems to be a direct response to anyone who thought 1995's WOWEE ZOWEE sealed a downward spiral from indie-pop heroes to incomprehensible, in-joke nonconformists. On BRIGHTEN THE CORNERS, the rock hero in Pavement reemerges as the dominant stereotype, making the lyrical idiosyncrasies on which critics of the band like to harp into witty window-dressing. Nowhere is this dichotomy better heard than onthe electrifying opener, "Stereo," which rages with anthemic power-chords and a rock-star chorus ("Hey! Listen to me! I'm on the stereo"), while also pondering the longest-standing mystery in rock, the voice of Rush singer Geddy Lee ("how did it get so high/I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy"). Musically, BRIGHTEN THE CORNERS extends the rock tradition to the other side of Sonic Youth's dissonant discoveries while staying free of grunge's self-defeatist mentality. No longer a group of lo-fi pranksters, Pavement has tightened up into a mighty ensemble, able to jam like psychedelic maniacs (the closing "Fin") or fly by night like punks on speed ("Embassy Row"). Lyrically, Stephen Malkmus and co-conspirator Scott Kannberg (aka Spiral Stairs) have started questioning where they belong in a late-'90s world seemingly devoid of secrets and mysteries. Their declarations present yet another yin-yang to the Pavement whole: Kannberg's answers seem to lie in emotional stability, Malkmus' in the never-ending search itself. These uncertainties of dealing with one's unrecognized worth play out like an Irvine Welsh novel: the chapters full of spunky glee, the ending steeped in melancholy. SKU: 1036417

dwightyoakamacoustic.net
Solo performer: Dwight Yoakam (vocals, guitar). "A Thousand Miles From Nowhere" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance. Inspired by fan reaction to the show-closing solo acoustic portion of his 1999 tour promoting that year's LAST CHANCE FOR A THOUSAND YEARS, this set draws from throughout Dwight Yoakam's career. Powering these stripped-down versions of Yoakam favorites are the singer-songwriter's nuanced vocal style and surprisingly impressive finger picking (with the occasional guitar solo by producer/running buddy Pete Anderson). Thanks to the trademark vibrato and yodeling the Ohio native uses on songs such as the bluesy shuffle of "Nothing's Changed Here" and "This Drinkin' Will Kill Me," it's easy to hear the ghosts of Lefty Frizzell and Johnny Horton hanging over this recording session. Although Dwight Yoakam is most often associated with the Bakersfield sound, the narrative flow of songs like "Buenas Noches From a Lonely Room(She Wore Red Dresses)," and "Johnson's Love," shows he has just as much in common with Lubbock cousins the likes of Joe Ely and Guy Clark. Tunes such as his hiccuping cover of "Little Sister," and an uptempo arrangement of "Fast As You" that sounds like a Sun Studios outtake, point to the major role rockabilly plays in Yoakam's sound. Perfectly wrapping up Dwight Yoakam's soulful experiment is a chilling a cappella rendition of "Guitars, Cadillacs." SKU: 1036220

Bing Sings Whilst Bregman Swings [Digipak]
Personnel includes: Bing Crosby (vocals); Buddy Bregman (arranger, conductor); Barney Kessel (guitar); Lew Raderman (violin); Virginia Majewski (viola); Edgar Lustgarden (cello); Herb Geller, Bud Shank (alto saxophone); Bob Cooper, Ted Nash (tenor saxophone); Chuck Gentry (baritone saxophone); Pete Candoli, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Maynard Ferguson, Conrad Gozzo (trumpet); Milt Bernhart, Francis Howard, George Roberts, Frank Rosolino, Lloyd Ulyate (trombone); Paul Smith (piano); Joe Mondragon (bass); Alvin Stoller (drums). Recorded on June 11 and 12, 1956. Originally released on Verve (2020). Includes liner notes by Donald Freeman. Digitally remastered by Ben Young (Universal Mastering). Fred Astaire did a classic session with Oscar Peterson for Verve (Clef) back in 1952. In 1963, it was Bing Crosby's turn to re-establish his jazz credentials by doing the obligatory date for Norman Granz. In truth, this is a pretty easygoing session, even if then-hotshot arranger Buddy Bregman wrote his usual hard-swinging charts. But with Bing Crosby, could the results be anything but easygoing? Since jazz vocal expert Will Friedwald's first choice for up-to-date Crosby, 1957's BING WITH A BEAT, is so far unissued on CD, this Gold Disc will just have to do. Though Crosby's voice does show signs of wear and tear--this is 1963, after all--he breezes his way confidently through a choice set of Great American Songbook classics, including four by Rodgers & Hart. Bing also steals a page from his friend Fred'swell-thumbed book by jauntily covering "Cheek to Cheek," "They All Laughed," and "Nice Work if You Can Get It." Highlight: an old-timer's expert timing on Jerome Kern's gently soaring "The Song Is You," once made memorable in the new style by a student of Crosby's named Sinatra. SKU: 1058513

Stay Out Of The Kitchen
Personnel includes: Mable John (vocals); Steve Cropper (electric guitar), Booker T. Jones, Isaac Hayes (keyboards); Donald "Duck" Dunn (Fender bass); Al Jackson, Jr. (drums). Recorded between 1966 and 1968. Includes liner notes by Rob Bowman. Contains 26 rare or previously unreleased tracks. Relatively unknown outside the circle of soul fanatics, Mable Johnhad one of the sultriest voices in her genre, and co-wrote some of the era's best, yet unheard, soul classics. Most notable of her material was her theme song "Able Mable," a bluesy finger-snapping piece reminiscent of "Fever," a single once recorded by her little brother Little Willie John. It's remarkable that the song "Able Mable" or her other singles never pushed her to greater stardom. Coupling the suave of soul with the smokey physicality of blues, Mable John's vocal approach is virtually unmistakeable. Included on STAY OUT OF THE KITCHEN are John's most notable singles for the Stax/Volt label, "Able Mable" and "Running Out." What makes the tracks even more remarkable is the impeccable playing by Stax regulars, guitarist Steve Cropper and drummer Al Jackson, Jr. STAY OUT OF THE KITCHEN is a portrait of a timeless soul singer at her best. Best Of Jimmy Cliff In Concert, The
Personnel: Jimmy Cliff (vocals, guitar); Joseph "Joe" Higgs (vocals, percussion); Ernest Ranglin, Noel "Diggles" Bailey (guitar); Ernest "Sterling" McCleod (keyboards); Earl "Baga" Walker (bass); Carleton "Santa" Davies (drums); Uzziah "Sticky" Thompson (percussion). Although he had been at it for years, it wasn't until the '70s that Jimmy Cliff helped reggae break through to the masses, largely on the strength of his performance as an actor and musician in THE HARDERTHEY COME. So it's no surprise that on this 1976 recording, which is both a live record and a greatest hits package, nearly half of the songs come from that stellar record. And judging from the excited crowd response, this was no disappointment. Backed by a loose yet rhythmically tight backup band and vocalists, Cliff delivers 10 impassioned songs in versions that are faithful to the well-loved originals. Cliff is in fine form here, energized and in great voice. While he will forever be associated with reggae, Cliff is comfortable stretching beyond the genre's limitations. "Many Rivers to Cross," one of his signature songs, strongly recalls popular soul ballads of the '60s like "When a Man Loves a Woman." He also revisits an early hit, the enchanting "Wonderful World, Beautiful People," turns in a nifty version of Cat Stevens' "Wild World" and a stirring "Vietnam," among many highlights. SKU: 5060019

Royal Scam, The [Remastered]
Steely Dan: Donald Fagen (vocals, keyboards); Walter Becker (guitar, bass). Additional personnel: Larry Carlton, Elliot Randall, Dean Parks, Dennis Dias (guitar); Chuck Findley, Bob Findley, Slyde Hyde, Jim Horn, Plas Johnson, John Klemmer (horns); Victor Feldman (keyboards, percussion); Paul Griffin, Don Grolnick (keyboards); Chuck Rainey (bass); Bernard Purdie, Rick Marotta (drums); Gary Coleman (percussion); Venetta Fields, Clydie KIng, Sherlie Matthews, Tim Schmit, Michael McDonald (background vocals). Recorded at ABC Studios, Los Angeles, California and A&R Studios, New York, New York. Includes liner notes by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Digitally remastered by Roger Nichols (Digital Atomics, Miami, Florida). All tracks have been digitally remastered. It was the year of America's bicentennial celebration, but on 1976's THE ROYAL SCAM, Steely Dan masterminds Fagen and Becker did not share in the exultant spirit of the times. The title track--a vision of fallen America from the point of view of immigrants--has a mock-celebratory chorus: "See the glory of the Royal Scam," which typifies SCAM's heartfelt cynicism. In their next two releases (their last), Steely Dan's sound would smoothen and incorporate less rock. This is perhaps their darkest record, and for a band known for its arch mixture of L.A. cool and ennui, that's saying something. Guitar heroes were roundly worshipped in the '70s, and two of the record's standout tracks, "Kid Charlemagne" and "Don't Take Me Alive," feature incendiary axe work by Larry Carlton. Interestingly, both glorify outsiders: The former tells the story of legendary drug chemist Owsley Stanley, and the latter is a first-person account of a murderer on the lam. Other highlights: the crisp "Green Earrings" the lounge-chair funk of "Haitian Divorce" and the inscrutable "Fez," whose principal lyric is "I'm never gonna do it without the fez on/don't make me do it without the fez on." Prisoner In Disguise
Personnel: Linda Ronstadt (vocals); Emmylou Harris (vocals, guitar); Andrew Gold (acoustic & electric guitars, musette, piano, organ, drums, percussion, background vocals); Peter Asher (acoustic guitar, musette, percussion, background vocals); J.D. Souther (acoustic guitar, background vocals); Eddie Black, Danny Kortchmar (electric guitars); Lowell George (slide guitar); Dan Dugmore (steel guitar); Herb Pedersen (banjo, background vocals); David Lindley (fiddle); David Grisman (mandolin); Jim Connor (harmonica); Glen D. Hardin (piano); Kenny Edwards (bass, background vocals); Nigel Olsson, David Kemper, Russell Kunkel (drums); Maria Muldaur, Don Francisco, Pat Henderson (background vocals). Recorded at The Sound Factory, Los Angeles, California between February and June 1975. Also available with "Simple Dreams" on 1 cassette. After the chart-topping success of HEART LIKE A WHEEL, Linda Ronstadt released PRISONER IN DISGUISE in 1975, an extremely successful follow-up effort which bolstered her standing as one of America's most popular singers. Opting not to fiddle with a formula that was working, Ronstadt delivered another collection of well-crafted, carefully arranged rock, pop and country songs that showed off her talent for covering good tunes and rendering them in a way that allowed the melodies to soar on the strength of her graceful voice. The album yielded two strong singles: an exuberant version of the Motown classic "Heat Wave" and a silky-smooth rendition of Smokey Robinson's "Ooh Baby Baby," featuring lyrical alto saxophone touches by veteran session man David Sanborn. Ms. Ronstadt makes great use of the poignant ache in her voice on elegaic ballads like James Taylor's "Hey Mister, That's Me Up on the Jukebox" and Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You," which she sings with considerably less vocal histrionics than Whitney Houston would in her remake of the tune some 20 years later. Nobody's Heroes [PA]
Roaring back with a vengeance and seemingly without pause for breath, NOBODYS HEROES finds Stiff Little Fingers once again examining the frailty of the human condition in time of war. While this preoccupation with life and death can come across as either preachy (Billy Bragg), goofy (Chumbawumba), or even pedantic (theClash's later work), to SLF it seems more than just a reaction to circumstance than a defense mechanism in a country divided by barbed-wire. However, SLF are canny enough to realize that no mere punk band can actually cause change by itself (as evidenced in the brilliant title track where lead singer Jake Burns advises fans not to let your heroes get your kicks for you) as true change comes from collective involvement. "Tin Soldiers," with its rant against the futility of the army, and "Fly the Flag" with its indictment of Great Britain's colonialism and neglect of the poor prove that perhaps the best resistance is found in punk rock catharsis. "Bloody Dub" finds the band once again embracing outlaw imagery and the oppositional culture of reggae's most mysteriously satisfying subculture. SKU: 1080144

Kiss Of Death [PA]
Personnel: Jadakiss (rap vocals); Mariah Carey, Anthony Hamilton (vocals); DJ Quik, Eminem, Kanye West, Nate Dogg, Sheek, Snoop Dogg, Styles P (rap vocals). Producers: DJ Green Lantern; Black Key; Jelly Roll. Recording information: Evil Genius, New York, New York (2004); Powerhouse, Yonkers, New York (2004); Groovyville, Los Angeles, California (2004). On his second solo record, KISS OF DEATH, Jadakiss begins the wistful, reflective song "Why" with the question, "Why is Jadakiss as hard as it gets" Unwavering confidence contrasted by soft introspection is a trademark of the ex-Lox member, and this quality distinguishes the Yonkers, New York rapper from his peers. KISS OF DEATH balances street knowledge with humor, and serves up robust beats and guest shots by a legion of hip-hop luminaries. Jadakiss brings together both American coasts, as well as years of history, on the groovy, 1970s-tinged "Shine," with Cali's Snoop Dogg and NYC's DJ Quik packing some of their best rhymes. On the other end of the spectrum is the rock-sampling "Welcome to D-Block," featuring Jadakiss's former Lox bandmates and a relatively subdued Eminem. Of course, Jadakiss can unleash some serious rhymes on his own, especially on the hardcore title track and the melodic "Bring You Down." A dynamic sophomore effort, KISS OF DEATH cements Jadakiss's status as one of the premier forces in EastCoast rap. SKU: 6563800

Boy Is Mine, The
Personnel: Monica, Brandy (vocals); Isaac Phillips, Tomi Martin, Michael Thompson, Sonny Lallerstedt (guitar); The Darkchild Orchestra Strings (strings); Colin Wolfe (piano, bass); Dean Gant (piano); Dallas Austin (Wurlitzer piano); Daryl Simmons (keyboards, drum programming); David Foster (keyboards); Ronnie Garrett (bass); Tom Knight (drums); Scott Meeder (percussion); Felipe Elgueta, Glen Woodward, Simon Franglen (keyboard programming); John Robinson (drum programming); DJ Sol Messiah (scratches); Debra Killings, 112, Darcy Aldridge, Pamela Major, Chedlle Davis, Susan Ann Carwel, Jeff Pescetto (background vocals); Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Producers include: Rodney Jerkins, Dallas Austin, David Foster, Jermaine Dupri, Daryl Simmons. Engineers include: Leslie Braithwaite, Carlton Lynn, Rico Lumpkins. "The Boy Is Mine" won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, and was nominated for Record Of The Year and Best R&B Song. This College Park, Atlanta native began singing in her church choir when she was merely four years old. If you look at it from that perspective, the young singer ispractically a veteran. She certainly sounds it on THE BOY IS MINE, a spicy R&B offering that brims with precociousness. Though Monica's got the vocal chops to carry the album alone, she's not afraid to expand the sonic palette a bit by working with a couple of carefully chosen guest artists. The title tune finds her in a duet with another young R&B sensation, Brandy, and the two women's voices make a perfect match. On "Gone Be Fine," Monica injects a little hip-hop into the mix, calling upon the substantial rapping talents of Outkast. Clive Davis himself co-produced THE BOY IS MINE, proof positive that Monica's talents have inspired as much confidence from the music industry as they have created admirers among R&B listeners.
