Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man 1923-1934
Full title: Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man: 1923-1934. PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN contains 81 songs and includes an 80-page book with comprehensive liner notes, rare and unseen photos from Armstrong's personal collection, original 78 label art and other period memorabilia. Personnel includes: Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Fletcher Henderson Orchestra, Maggie Jones, Bessie Smith, Clarence Williams, Sidney Bechet, Johnny Dodds, Earl "Fatha" Hines. Includes liner notes by Dan Morgenstern and Loren Schoenberg. PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN: 1923-1934 won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Album Notes. It was nominated for Best Historical Album. This magnificent Grammy Award-winning box set offers plenty of value to longtime fans and neophytes alike. While many highlights from PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST AS A YOUNG MAN may be found on individual Columbia Louis Armstrong discs (as well as the Bessie Smith and Fletcher Henderson boxes), this chronological portrait of the young genius also includes many of the trumpeter's rarest early works as a sideman. Taken as a whole--with Dan Morgenstern's masterful annotations--they create a fuller musical picture of the man who taught the world to swing...and sing. These four volumes chronicle young Armstrong's development from his earliest sideman work (with King Oliver, Clarence Williams, Fletcher Henderson and a host of blues and pop singers), through his incredibly influential Hot Five and Hot Seven sides, on to international stardom as a singer and orchestra leader. Also featured are such provocative, seldom-heard collaborations as his bluesy turns with the father of country music, Jimmie Rodgers ("The Singing Brakeman") on "Blue Yodel No. 9." In this brief space it's impossible to chronicle the countless innovations that derive directly from Louis, and which form our collective rosetta stone of modern music--both pop and jazz. Armstrong transformed everything he touched into a new vocabulary, and as Dan Morgenstern points out, Satchmo's sources weren't limited to blues, spirituals, ragtime, marches and dance music, but the classics as well--particularly opera. In the rush to praise his cornet/trumpet playing, his vocal innovations are often overlooked. On "No One Else But You" he treats the basic beat as a glorious given, and phrases around it in a personalized mix of rap, scat and blues syncopations, displaying a symphonic sense of structure and an operatic feel for the dramatic gesture. And on the classic Fats Waller tunes "Ain't Misbehavin'" (with its slyGershwin paraphrase) and "(What Did I Do To Be So) Black And Blue," he achieves a poignant balance of resignation and celebration, topped off by soaring flights of freedom. No serious devotee of American music can afford to miss such a motherlode of gems, but some of Louis' lesser known tracks are full of surprises as well. On "Texas Moaner Blues" (from 1924) Louis and Sidney Bechet dig in for a rivetting duel, wh SKU: 1069831

It Was Written
Personnel includes: Nas, Mobb Deep, Dr. Dre, Lauryn Hill (vocals); Delight, Dave Atkinson (keyboards); DJ Kid Capri (scratches); JoJo Hailey (background vocals). The Firm: Nas, AZ, Foxy Brown, Cormega (rap vocals). Producers include: Nas, Trackmasters, Poke, Tone, DJ Premier. Engineers include: EddieSancho, Kelston Rice. "If I Ruled The World (Imagine That)" was nominated for a 1997 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance. Nas' 1994 debut album, ILLMATIC, has been called one of the best rap albums of all time, and this followup documents the main reason why: Nas is the supreme lyricist in hip-hop. On the surface he is a gangsta rapper dispensing richly detailed street stories. But Nas speaks in metaphors not easily interpreted, and his songs constantly challenge the listener to see into his innermost thoughts. He dwells neither on what he could be or wants to be, but rather, simply, on what he is. He's one of the few rappers who can fairly be labeled a poet. IT WAS WRITTEN utilizes the musical talents of street-oriented producers to enhance Nas' feel for reality. Among those producers are Dr. Dre, who collaborates on "Nas Is Coming" in a joint attempt to squash the East Coast/West Coast war. SKU: 1015567

Journey
Journey: Gregg Rolie (vocals, keyboards); Neal Schon (guitar, background vocals); George Tickner (guitar); Ross Valory (piano, bass, background vocals); Aynsley Dunbar (drums). Recorded at CBS Studios, San Francisco, California. After splitting their backing musician gigwith guitar legend Carlos Santana, guitarist Neal Schon and keyboardist/vocalist Gregg Rolie formed a new band--Journey. The band's 1975 self-titled debut is much more prog-rock/fusion-based than its later pop work, as the quartet jams out on long instrumental sections throughout. "Of a Lifetime" and "Topaz" are particularly noteworthy examples of Journey's early style. SKU: 1012352

Rising Sons, The
Rising Sons: Ry Cooder (vocals, 6- & 12-string guitars, mandolin, slide guitar, dobro); Jesse Lee Kincaid (vocals, guitar); Taj Mahal (vocals, harmonica, guitar piano); Gary Marker (bass); Kevin Kelley (drums, percussion). Compilation producers: Amy Herot, Bob Irwin. Original tracks recorded in Hollywood, California between September 9, 1965 and May 18, 1966. New Taj Mahal vocal tracks for "Dust My Broom," "Last FairDeal Gone Down" and "Baby, What You Want Me To Do?" recorded in New York, New York on June 19, 1992. Includes liner notes by Marc Kirkeby. In 1966 Ry Cooder was a young multi-instrumentalist with a keen interest in traditional American music. He met a similarly inclined singer called Taj Mahal, with whom he formed the Rising Sons. Countless British groups had previously combined blues with Beatles-influenced rock, but such a combination was a surprising rarity in mid-'60s California. On their sole album, the Rising Sons delve deeper than those groups for their influences, bypassing the Chicago Blues sound in favor of traditional Delta country blues. They cover staples of the Delta repertoire like "Candyman, "The Devil's Got My Woman" and "32-20," where Cooder's nimble picking and unearthly slide mesh well with Mahal's hearty, soulful vocals. Far from revivalists, they play fast and loose with tradition--the Delta feel is offset by plenty of British Invasion-flavored rock (and "32-20" is given an Otis Redding-style treatment). The Rising Sons synthesize styles in such an effective and inventive manner that a new blues paradigm is created. SKU: 1003309

LSG II
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. LSG: Gerald Levert, Keith Sweat, Johnny Gill (vocals). Additional personnel includes: Loon (rap vocals); Craig T. Cooper (vocodor). Producers include: Sean Levert, Jr., Gerald Levert, Joe Little, Steve Russell, Mike City. R&B superstars Gerald Levert, Keith Sweat, and Johnny Gill first got together as LSG in1997 for an appropriately soulful debut record that featured an all-star guest roster from Busta Rhymes to LL Cool J and production from Jermaine Dupree and P. Diddy nee Sean "Puffy" Combs. Six years later, the threesome drops the follow-up, LSG-2, and this time, sagely, the vocal giants are more subtle, letting their gargantuan talents speak for themselves. On LSG-2, the guest stars are few and lower-key, but memorable. Rising star rapper Loon offers a strong turn on "Friends," the latest alteration on the Whodini classic, and Craig T. Cooper's vocoder hook sets the sultry, funky vibe on the sexed-out "Shakedown." But for the most part LSG2 is about Levert, Sweat, and Gill doing what they do best, their siren songs luring listeners anywhere the dulcet-toned balladeers might desire. The three trade off vocals on one appealing track after another, complementing each other to perfection, nowhere better than on the bouncy, catchy "What About Me?" LSG2 came after a long wait, but the icons don't disappoint, as the supergroup's sophomore effort offers consistent sensual soul. SKU: 1085856

Size Isn't Everything
The Bee Gees: Maurice Gibb (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Barry Gibb (vocals, guitar); Robin Gibb (vocals). Additional personnel: Alan Kendall, Tim Cansfield (guitar); Gustavo Lezcano (harmonica); Ed Calle (saxophone); Tim Moore (keyboards, programming); George "Chocolate" Perry (bass); Trevor Murrell (drums); Luis Jardim (percussion). Recorded at Middle Ear Studios, Miami, Florida. By the time the Gibb brothers rolled into the '90s, they'd been through everything from Beatlesque baroque pop to disco and Philly soul. There are elements of all these styles in the eminently adaptable band's sound on SIZE ISN'T EVERYTHING, but the overriding feel is one of high-production '90s pop, with smooth layers of synthesizer and generous amounts of reverb. Those who remain fixated on the days of "To Love Somebody" might not find a pointof entry here. However, Bee Gees fans whose raisons d'etre are the group's distinctive three-part harmonies and subtly inventive songwriting will have no trouble discerning in this album the stylistic thread linking it to the band's glory days. Rio [Remastered] [ECD]
This release varies slightly from the LP version, with some tracks slightly remixed or re-edited. According to Capitol, this is the version that Duran Duran likes best. The artistic progression from the band's self-titled debut to the following year's RIO was the greatest aesthetic leap of Duran Duran's career. Thegroup moved from catchy but somewhat rudimentary New Romantic synth-funk to elegantly arranged, sophisticated pop-rock, concentrating more on song structure than dance beats. For their efforts, they were rewarded with superstar status, due chiefly to "Hungry Like the Wolf," a lascivious tune that injects a welcome dose of rock & roll guitar. The most impressive tracks on RIO, though, are the more contemplative, balladic offerings, like "Lonely in Your Nightmare," "Save a Prayer," and especially "The Chauffer," with its stream-of-consciousness lyrics and unconventional structure, arty without seeming pretentious. If you only have one Duran Duran album, it should be RIO. SKU: 1059254

Rare Chicago Blues Recordings (From the Collection of Norman Dayron)
The last track is an extended version of theinterview that appeared on the original LP. Robert Nighthawk and his Flames of Rhythm: Robert Nighthawk (vocals, slide guitar); Johnny Young (vocals, guitar); Carey Bell (vocals, harmonica); Robert Whiteshead (drums). Recorded live on the corner of 14th & Peoria, Chicago, Illinois in September 1964. Originally released on Rounder (2022). Includes liner notes by Peter Guralnick. Digitally remastered by Don Ososke & Norman Dayron. Blues archivist Norman Dayron recorded this set by Robert Nighthawk and his small ensemble in 1964. Three years later, Nighthawk died from heart failure, leaving these recordings to sit unreleased until 1980. This album was recorded live on a street corner in Chicago, and Nighthawk's playing and singing are still in peak form. This is made all the more riveting because of the energy of the crowd, which becomes more and more excited as the set moves along. Nighthawk is joined by rhythm guitarist Johnny Young and drummer Robert Whitehead throughout, and harmonica player Carey Bell on a few selections. LIVE ON MAXWELL STREET is a no-frills, no-nonsense, honest, and committed performance. This and BRICKS ON MY PILLOW, which captures some of Nighthawk's late-'40s and early-'50s studio recordings, are stunning introductions to this vital bluesman. SKU: 1014127

Photographs And Memories (His Greatest Hits)
All tracks have been digitally remastered. Less than a year after a tragic plane crash took the lives of both singer/guitarist Jim Croce and his touring guitarist Maury Muehleisen on September 20, 1973, the first of many 'best of' collections surfaced, PHOTOGRAPHS & MEMORIES. Since it was originally released, it has become undoubtedly Croce's most popular and best-known release, as it contains nearly all of his very best compositions of his short career. Few artists in folk and rock history have been able to weave storytelling lyrics and fluid guitar lines as masterfully as Croce and Muehleisen did, as proven by just about any of the fourteen tracks included here. You'll find such folk rock classics as "You Don't Mess Around With Jim," "Photographs and Memories," "Time In A Bottle," "Operator (That's Not The Way It Feels)," "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown," as well as such fan faves as "I'll Have To SayI Love You In A Song," "Rapid Roy," and "One Less Set Of Footsteps." While a slight criticism is the mysterious absence of one of Croce's finest songs, "Walkin' Back To Georgia," for a concise overview of Croce's finest selections, PHOTOGRAPHS & MEMORIES is highly recommended. Recorded at Royaltone, NRG, Hang Suite and Ocean Way Recording, Hollywood, California; Aerowave, Encino, California. RETURN OF SATURN was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. Pop-ska rockers No Doubt make their long-awaited return with the follow-up to the hugely successful TRAGIC KINGDOM. The band's fiery dynamic remains intact as vocalist Gwen Stefani's penchant for emotionally charged tales of heartbreak drive the single "Ex-Girlfriend," "Simple Kind Of Life" and "Bath Water." In "The Magic's In The Makeup," Stefani's lyrics speak of yearning to be appreciated beyond surface beauty for who she really is while the band reaches for a thicker sound and more complex arrangements. Illusions and metaphors exploring the darker side of love set the tone of "Artificial Sweetener." "Marry Me" uses a melodic, staccato bass line to drive the reggae-tinged tale of the insecurities and doubts surrounding commitment. In "New" Stefani metaphorically compares fresh batteries to the optimism and excitement of a new relationship. "Too Late" is an atmospheric, bittersweet power ballad while "Staring Problem" throttles with the quirky punk energy that long-time fans will embrace. With two years in the making, RETURN OF SATURN finds No Doubt a tighter, more mature unit, focused more on pop songs and production and leaning slightly away from the ska/horn dominated sound of their past. Saga
Personnel: Randy Weston (piano); Talib Kibwe (saxophone, flute); Billy Harper (tenor saxophone); Benny Powell (trombone); Alex Blake (bass); Billy Higgins (drums); Neil Clarke (percussion). Randy Weston was still at the peak of his powers, despite nearing his 70th birthday, for this set recorded with a septet in 1995. Weston's writing and playing have long drawn from a combination of American jazz and African traditions. This set celebrates that rich and entwined heritage, and Weston fearlessly juxtaposes dissonant note clusters with sweetly inviting melodies. "Tangier Bay," is, for example, relentlessly propulsive with undulating counter-rhythms. His three front-line soloistsare distinct and inventive: tenor saxophonist Billy Harper, alto saxophonist Talib Kibwe, and trombonist Benny Powell. This album, along with EARTH BIRTH and the PORTRAITS series, made the '90s an expansive and productive decade for Weston. SKU: 1005603

Clash, The [Remastered]
Also available in a 3-pack with LONDON CALLING and COMBAT ROCK. The Clash: Joe Strummer, Mick Jones (vocals, guitar); Paul Simonon (bass); Tory Crimes, Nicky Headon (drums). Producers: Mickey Foote, Lee Perry, The Clash, Bill Price. Digitally remastered by Ray Staff & Bob Whitney (Whitfield Street Studios, London, England). This album introduced the world to The Clash, the only group that was on even footing with The Sex Pistols in U.K. punk rock's early days. The Clash avoided the Pistols' sensationalism, singing instead songs about politics, racism and class warfare. The music's brutal assault, accompanied by Strummer's charismatic vocal style, earned the group attention in its native England, where THE CLASH entered the charts at number 12. This album collects many tracks from the original British release of THE CLASH along withthe single "I Fought The Law", and "Complete Control", a song they recorded with legendary Jamaican producer Lee "Scratch" Perry. Johnny The Fox
As a concept album, JOHNNY THE FOX has too murky a theme to be considered a true success. As a rock album, it standswith the best of Thin Lizzy's work. Released during the band's peak years (the mid- to late '70s), the album is highlighted by the twin guitar attack of Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson and Lynott's own songwriting. Although his romantic artistic ambitions often outreached his hard rock grasp, the songs here (taken one by one) reveal a more focused craftsman. The overall tone of the album is looser--funkier even--than on any previous Thin Lizzy effort. Of course, the only successful single was the predictable pounding of "Don't Believe a Word," but there are richer and unexpected highlights scattered throughout. The gentle strains of "Borderline" reveal a melodic grace not usually associated with the band. The easy roll of "Old Flame" likewise unearths heart-on-your-sleeve romanticism; and this from a guy who's better known for casual dismissals such as "if that chick don't want to know, forget her," from the band's signature song, "The Boys are Back in Town." One Hot Minute
Red Hot Chili Peppers: Anthony Kiedis (vocals); Dave Navarro (guitar); Flea (bass); Chad Smith (drums). Additional personnel: Baby Gabriel James Navarro (vocals); Tree (violin); John Lurie (harmonica); Stephen Perkins, Lenny Castro (percussion); Kristen Vigard, Aimee Echo, Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa, Clara Balzary, Bailey Reise, Askia Ndegeocello, Nadia Wehbe, Sarabeth Kelly, Matthew Kelly, Phillip Greenspan, Perry Greenspan, Veronica Twigg, Remy Greeno, Jaclyn Dimaggio, Hayley Oakes, Nikolai Giefer, Taiana Giefer, Nina Rothburg, Sheera Ehrig, Jade Chacon (background vocals). Like the legendary Spinal Tap's inability to hold onto a drummer, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have grappled with a revolving guitarist problem since the 1988 death of Hillel Slovak. Former Jane's Addiction axe-man Dave Navarro climbs aboard the Chili Pepper Express for ONE HOT MINUTE, which also marks the return of Rick Rubin to the production helm. Navarro's arrival coincides with a more experimental approach by the group. The transformations don't so much alter the funk-based sound of the band as they strain it through an ethereal colander of radical time changes. "Warped," the first single and leadoff cut, demonstrates this with a balls-to-the-wall adrenaline rush that abruptly concludes with a gentle outro. Other variations on the trademark punk-funk sound include a children's chorus on "Aeroplane," a talk box coupled with some mantra-like chanting on "Falling Into Grace," and the Beatlesque marriage of sitar and other strings on "Tearjerker." History gets revisited on "Deep Kick," a hyper-kinetic rap by Anthony Kiedis about the band's origins that gives way to Flea's ruminations on kicking around with the Butthole Surfers. While the house-party chants of "One Big Mob" and the Eddie Hazel-inspired sass of "Walkabout" lean towards the ChiliPeppers' penchant for not faking the funk, "Transcending" truly gauges the band's musical maturation. Inspired by Flea's friendship with the late River Phoenix, the song starts as a reminiscence about Phoenix's intellect and gentleness over a bed of clean, up-tempo guitar, before dropping into a maelstrom of raging feedback fueled by anguish. Savage
Eurythmics: Annie Lennox, David A. Stewart. Additional personnel: Olle Romo (programming). Engineers: Fred DeFaye, Alan Moulder, Manu Guiot. Recorded at Chateau Dangu, Normandy, France. Annie Lennox, the visual chameleon puts another face on; this time she is a blonde Barbie. Under the covers she is very much the familiar voice that became one of the most listened tothroughout the 80s. This came towards the end, and as such is not the usual greatest hits package that many of their regular albums sounded like. Stewart was beginning to experiment with electronic sound (again) as Lennox seemed to want to sing more. In "I Need A Man," Annie sings of the type of man she does not want. In "Shame" she mourns nostalgia, while in "Savage" there is sadness, bitterness and anger. This sounds like it was a difficult album to make. SKU: 1011502
