You'd think being one of the most in-demand cornet players on the downtown New York avant-jazz scene, performing and recording with innovators like Jamaladeen Tacuma, Material and James Blood Ulmer to name just a few, would be artistic expression aplenty for most musicians. Not so for Olu Dara. On his long overdue solo outing, Dara delivers not the expected Knitting Factory-style jazz romps but rather a seamless, organic blend of funk, blues, African music, folk and jazz that owes as much to Taj Mahal as to Bill Laswell.
In fact, there are tracks where Dara doesn't even touch the cornet, relying instead on his earthy voice and rich guitar tones, which are the album's constants. Most of the tunes feature lyrics that examine the everyday reality of urban life in a disarmingly realistic way, setting up Dara as a kind of bluesman for the next millenium. On "Jungle Jay" that urban quotient is accentuated by a guest appearance from Dara's son, hip-hop star Nas. The album closes on a heartfelt, postive note, with the tender lullaby "Kiane."

In the tradition of its predecessor STILLMATIC, GOD'S SON seeks to erase the memory of Nas's commercial pop-crossover albums, instead hearkening back to the poetic glory days of STILLMATIC. The New York hip-hop legend returns to the thoughtful, introspective philosophy that turned heads early in his recording career. There are no attempts at fancy, hook-laden production here--quite the opposite in fact, as the tracks almost seem to go out of their way to be workaday, subservient frameworks to the lyrics. Sampling records (James Brown's "Funky Drummer," Incredible Bongo Band's "Apache") that have already been used by a jillion other rappers, Nas makes it clear that his focus here is strictly on the message. Nas's mother died during the making of this album, and the experience moved him to address such weighty topics as mortality, religion, family, and personal responsibility. Those themes might seem far from the thug-life reveries of many of his contemporaries, but for Nas it's business as usual.

Godsmack first came to fame with a seamlessblend of Metallica-like vocals and hooks and seemingly Tool-inspired prog-metal sensibilities all combined into an unrelentingly aggressive sonic attack. FACELESS continues in that tradition, delivering blow after aural blow via hellfire guitar riffs, devil's-anvil drums, and a gut-wrenching sense of dynamics. As implied above, singer Sully Erna alternates handily between James Hetfield-style lion growl and more vulnerable Maynard James Keenan tones, singing of all that's gone wrong both in himself and in the world that surrounds him, while the rest of the band does a fine job of representing the mayhem of modern society.
Unlike many other nu-metal types, Godsmack doesn't feel the need to leaven their attack with crossover-potential ballads and orchestral/electronic interludes. FACELESS provides one breathless bash after another without fail, never giving an inch until the very end, when the percussion-and-chanting strains of "The Awakening" give way to the largely acoustic, rather Alice in Chains-sounding closing tune "Serenity."

Named after a street in Weller's home-town of Woking in Surrey, this album was greeted with universal approval by critics and fans. The brilliant Peter Blake collage throughout the package portraysmuch greater nostalgia than is contained in the lyrics. The family snapshots and the Green Line picture serve only to fool the listener. The title track is clearly about the terraced houses that have now given way to 90s starter apartments, but the more personal content of tracks such as 'You Do Something To Me' is where Weller truly bares his soul. It would strongly appear that before recording this album, Weller listened to many Traffic albums.

Though largely unsubstantiated, rumors abounded that the mystery group known as the Network is actually Green Day, joined by members of Devo. Whether or not these rumors were true, it's not a stretch to imagine that Green Day and Devo are behind the Network, because the music falls firmly within the hook-filled, post-punk ken of both bands.The synth-driven, herky-jerky grooves and stylized, robotic singing come straight out of the Devo rulebook, while the hard-hitting, up-tempo tunes and the tightness of the group (powered by some intensely propulsive drumming) bears a marked similarity to Green Day's pop-punk aesthetic.
With its nervous energy and tech-minded themes, the music directly recalls early-1980s New Wave. Song titles like "Transistors Gone Wild," "Supermodel Robots," and "X-Ray Hamburger" unabashedly conjure up the era of Max Headroom, parachute pants, and Kraftwerk. The title track owes something to early-MTV goth-tinged dance music, as does the post-industrial "Spike." While it's easy to play spot-the-influence here (the lead singer does his best Sid Vicious impression on "Right Hand-a-Rama"), MONEY MONEY 2020 is still great fun, updating and energizing '80s styles for a new generation.

As a guy who made his reputation for being neck-deep in the sounds of blue-eyed soul, it seems Michael McDonald was destined to put out MOTOWN (released on the label of the same name), an album's worth of classics from this esteemed company's canon. McDonald went out and hired Fourplay, a quartet of top-notch jazz musicians, to back him up on his Motown debut. The combination of this St. Louis native's gruff vocals and the silky accompaniment of Larry Carlton, Bob James, Harvey Mason, and Nathan East gives adds a fresh touch to songs originally recorded by the likes of The Temptations, StevieWonder and Marvin Gaye. Wonder and Gaye songs make up the lion's share of the material, reflecting McDonald's longtime admiration of these two R&B giants. He doesn't disappoint, whether cutting loose on "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" or lovingly caressing "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)." With the stellar degree of care and respect accorded to these songs by McDonald, this 2003 outing ends up being a fine tribute to the Motown Records legacy.

In the film PRACTICAL MAGIC, Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock play two sisters who discover that they're bothwitches, blessed with magical powers. It's only natural then, that Stevie Nicks, who defined the rock-goddess-as-witch-queen image, should contribute two songs to the soundtrack. The spooky, Robert Johnson-meets-Donovan vibe of Nick Drake's "Black Eyed Dog" makes it a natural for inclusion as well. Less obvious selections include quintessential party tunes like Marvin Gaye's "Got To Give It Up" and Harry Nilsson's gloriously goofy "Coconut." However unlikely the aforementioned cuts might seem here, their inclusion helps make PRACTICAL MAGIC an eclectic, well-rounded affair.

Released on the tenth anniversary of King Tubby's death at the hands of gunmen in 1989, DUB LIKE DIRT isyet another amazingly good dub compilation released on the British reissue label Blood and Fire. These 16 tracks, the b-sides of Jamaican-only singles, were all produced by legendary producer Bunny Lee and mixed by Tubby, who was then at the height of his dub powers.
Unlike the increasingly bizarre work of Lee "Scratch" Perry during this era, Tubby's dub productions are relatively straightforward. He uses few sound effects and emphasizes the tight, flawless playing of Bunny Lee's Aggrovators. The group stars bassist Robbie Shakespeare, drummer Sly Dunbar, and guitarist Earl "Chinna" Smith, along with a cast of numerous guest artists detailed in the lengthy, informative liner notes. Though mid-'70s dub is less gimmicky than much of what came after, the pieces on DUB LIKE DIRT sound as fresh and inventive now as they did when they were recorded.

Anne Briggs' recording career lasted from 1963 to 1973, after which she largely withdrew from public performance, so the 1990 compilation CLASSIC ANNE BRIGGS came as a revelation to a generation of folk music fans more familiar with successors like Maddy Prior, Sandy Denny and June Tabor. That album gathered together her entire output for the Topic label. The ANNE BRIGGS album of 1971 was combined with her '60s output: two songs she contributed to THE IRON MUSE project, four more from the conceptual BIRD INTHE BUSH album plus her own EP THE HAZARDS OF LOVE.
In the '90s she made a short-lived return to live performance in the company of Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick. Always plagued by stage fright, these appearances were clearly nerve-wracking and the supportive enthusiasm of audiences was not enough to persuade her to revive her singing career. A COLLECTION presents all her Topic material in order of release, but this time adds superb versions of "She Moves Through The Fair" and "Let No Man Steal Your Thyme" first heard on two volumes of THE DECCA EDINBURGH FOLK FESTIVAL.

Ten years after their breakthrough hit, "Keep 'Em Separated," and 14 years after their debut, the Offspring maintains pace with SPLINTER. Since the last release, the band has lost longtime drummer Ron Welty, who's replaced here by A Perfect Circle skins-pounder Josh Freese. There's no discernible let-up in momentum; Dexter and company are essentially pursuing the same stylistic path they've been on from the beginning. Even though they achieved fame at the tail end of the grunge era, their '80s beginnings make them the grand old men of third-wave punk, and SPLINTER consequently bears a lot more gravitas than the efforts of younger pop-punks.
As usual, the band throws in a touch of ska-punk, this time with cautionary drinking tale "The Worst Hangover Ever," complete with horn section. And there are a couple of diversions from the norm--Ronnie King's wah-wah synth lightening things up on "Hit That," the acoustic guitar textures of "Spare Me the Details"--but the tried-and-true smart-aleck lyrics and pounding punk cadences that ensnared Offspring fans from the get-go are still very much in evidence.

SELECTION SIXTEEN is more wacky techno-scribble from Sheffield, England's highly respected Warp label--home of Aphex Twin and Two Lone Swordsmen. This is the sound of synthesizers and drum machines pushed to their limits, so expect lots of odd noises, samples, and frantic drum patterns that no human could ever play.
Squarepusher is Tom Jenkinson, a well-respected member of the UK's techno fraternity. Listening to this album, it is not difficult to see why--the styles range from drum-and-bass, squelchy, acidy techno, to downright bleepy weirdness. If your tastes in electronic music are definitely left of center, then this will undoubtedly appeal to you. If music was represented by visual art, Squarepusher would be the work ofJackson Pollock.
